Bhishma said.
स लब्ध्वा परमं देवाद्वरं सत्यवतीसुतः। अरणीं त्वथ सङ्गृह्य ममन्थाग्निचिकीर्षया ॥१२-३११-१॥
sa labdhvā paramaṃ devādvaraṃ satyavatīsutaḥ। araṇīṃ tvatha saṅgṛhya mamanthāgnicikīrṣayā ॥12-311-1॥
[स (sa) - he; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; परमं (paramam) - supreme; देवात् (devāt) - from the god; वरं (varam) - boon; सत्यवतीसुतः (satyavatīsutaḥ) - son of Satyavatī; अरणीं (araṇīm) - fire-stick; तु (tu) - but; अथ (atha) - then; सङ्गृह्य (saṅgṛhya) - having taken; ममन्थ (mamantha) - churned; अग्निचिकीर्षया (agnicikīrṣayā) - with the desire to produce fire;]
(He, having obtained the supreme boon from the god, the son of Satyavatī, having taken the fire-stick, then churned with the desire to produce fire.)
Having received the supreme boon from the god, the son of Satyavatī took the fire-stick and then churned it, wishing to produce fire. (12-311-1)
अथ रूपं परं राजन्बिभ्रतीं स्वेन तेजसा। घृताचीं नामाप्सरसमपश्यद्भगवानृषिः ॥१२-३११-२॥

(Then form supreme O king bearing by own splendor Ghritachi named apsaras saw the venerable sage.)
Then, O king, the venerable sage saw the apsaras named Ghritachi, bearing a supreme form by her own splendor. (12-311-2)
ऋषिरप्सरसं दृष्ट्वा सहसा काममोहितः। अभवद्भगवान्व्यासो वने तस्मिन्युधिष्ठिर ॥१२-३११-३॥
ṛṣir apsarasaṃ dṛṣṭvā sahasā kāmamohitaḥ। abhavad bhagavān vyāso vane tasmin yudhiṣṭhira ॥12-311-3॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; अप्सरसं (apsarasaṃ) - celestial nymph; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; काममोहितः (kāmamohitaḥ) - deluded by desire; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वने (vane) - in the forest; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(The sage, having seen the celestial nymph, suddenly became deluded by desire; the venerable Vyāsa became (so) in that forest, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, the venerable Vyāsa, upon suddenly seeing the celestial nymph in that forest, became overcome by desire. (12-311-3)
सा च कृत्वा तदा व्यासं कामसंविग्नमानसम्। शुकी भूत्वा महाराज घृताची समुपागमत् ॥१२-३११-४॥
sā ca kṛtvā tadā vyāsaṃ kāmasaṃvignamānasam। śukī bhūtvā mahārāja ghṛtācī samupāgamat ॥12-311-4॥
[सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यासम् (vyāsam) - Vyāsa; कामसंविग्नमानसम् (kāmasaṃvignamānasam) - with mind agitated by desire; शुकी (śukī) - female parrot; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; घृताची (ghṛtācī) - Ghṛtācī; समुपागमत् (samupāgamat) - approached closely;]
(She and having done then Vyāsa with mind agitated by desire, having become a female parrot, O great king, Ghṛtācī approached closely.)
And then, O great king, Ghṛtācī, having made Vyāsa's mind agitated by desire, became a female parrot and approached him. (12-311-4)
स तामप्सरसं दृष्ट्वा रूपेणान्येन संवृताम्। शरीरजेनानुगतः सर्वगात्रातिगेन ह ॥१२-३११-५॥
sa tām apsarasaṃ dṛṣṭvā rūpeṇānyena saṃvṛtām। śarīrajena anugataḥ sarva-gātra-atigena ha ॥12-311-5॥
[स (sa) - he; ताम् (tām) - her; अप्सरसं (apsarasaṃ) - apsaras; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; अन्येन (anyena) - by another; संवृताम् (saṃvṛtām) - covered; शरीरजेन (śarīrajena) - by bodily; अनुगतः (anugataḥ) - followed; सर्वगात्रातिगेन (sarva-gātra-atigena) - by all-limb-surpassing; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(He having seen her, the apsaras, covered by another form, followed by bodily (desire), by all-limb-surpassing (desire), indeed. (12-311-5))
He saw that apsaras, who was covered by another form, and, overcome by bodily desire that surpassed all his limbs, he indeed followed her. (12-311-5)
स तु धैर्येण महता निगृह्णन्हृच्छयं मुनिः। न शशाक नियन्तुं तद्व्यासः प्रविसृतं मनः ॥ भावित्वाच्चैव भावस्य घृताच्या वपुषा हृतः ॥१२-३११-६॥
sa tu dhairyeṇa mahatā nigṛhṇan hṛcchayam muniḥ। na śaśāka niyantuṃ tad vyāsaḥ pravisṛtaṃ manaḥ ॥ bhāvitvāc caiva bhāvasya ghṛtācyā vapuṣā hṛtaḥ ॥12-311-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; धैर्येण (dhairyeṇa) - with fortitude; महता (mahatā) - great; निगृह्णन् (nigṛhṇan) - restraining; हृच्छयम् (hṛcchayam) - desire of the heart; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; नियन्तुम् (niyantuṃ) - to control; तत् (tat) - that; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; प्रविसृतम् (pravisṛtam) - spread out; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; भावित्वात् (bhāvitvāt) - because of being influenced; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भावस्य (bhāvasya) - of feeling; घृताच्या (ghṛtācyā) - by Ghṛtācī; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - by the form; हृतः (hṛtaḥ) - carried away;]
(He but with fortitude great restraining desire of the heart sage not was able to control that Vyāsa spread out mind. Because of being influenced and indeed of feeling by Ghṛtācī by the form carried away.)
But he, the sage Vyāsa, though restraining his heart's desire with great fortitude, was not able to control his mind, which had become spread out. Indeed, because of being influenced by feeling, he was carried away by the form of Ghṛtācī. (12-311-6)
यत्नान्नियच्छतस्तस्य मुनेरग्निचिकीर्षया। अरण्यामेव सहसा तस्य शुक्रमवापतत् ॥१२-३११-७॥
yatnānniyacchatas tasya muner agnicikīrṣayā। araṇyām eva sahasā tasya śukram avāpatat ॥12-311-7॥
[यत्नात् (yatnāt) - by effort; नियच्छतः (niyacchataḥ) - of restraining; तस्य (tasya) - his; मुनेः (muneḥ) - of the sage; अग्निचिकीर्षया (agnicikīrṣayā) - with the desire to produce fire; अरण्याम् (araṇyām) - on the araṇi (fire-stick); एव (eva) - indeed; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; तस्य (tasya) - his; शुक्रम् (śukram) - semen; अवापतत् (avāpatat) - fell down;]
(By effort, of restraining, his, of the sage, with the desire to produce fire, on the araṇi (fire-stick), indeed, suddenly, his, semen, fell down.)
While the sage was restraining himself with effort, desiring to produce fire, suddenly his semen fell upon the araṇi (fire-stick). (12-311-7)
सोऽविशङ्केन मनसा तथैव द्विजसत्तमः। अरणीं ममन्थ ब्रह्मर्षिस्तस्यां जज्ञे शुको नृप ॥१२-३११-८॥
so'aviśaṅkena manasā tathaiva dvijasattamaḥ। araṇīṃ mamantha brahmarṣistasyāṃ jajñe śuko nṛpa ॥12-311-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अविशङ्केन (aviśaṅkena) - without doubt; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; द्विजसत्तमः (dvijasattamaḥ) - best of the twice-born; अरणीं (araṇīṃ) - the fire-stick; ममन्थ (mamantha) - churned; ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - the brahma-ṛṣi; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(He, with a mind free from doubt, in the same way, the best of the twice-born, churned the fire-stick; the brahma-ṛṣi; in that, was born Śuka, O king.)
He, the best of the twice-born, with a mind free from doubt, churned the fire-stick in the same way; from that, O king, the brahma-ṛṣi Śuka was born. (12-311-8)
शुक्रे निर्मथ्यमाने तु शुको जज्ञे महातपाः। परमर्षिर्महायोगी अरणीगर्भसम्भवः ॥१२-३११-९॥
śukre nirmathyamāne tu śuko jajñe mahātapāḥ। paramarṣirmahāyogī araṇīgarbhasambhavaḥ ॥12-311-9॥
[शुक्रे (śukre) - in the fire-stick; (śukra = fire-stick, locative); निर्मथ्यमाने (nirmathyamāne) - being churned; (niḥ + math = to churn, present passive participle, locative); तु (tu) - but; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; (name of the sage); जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; (from jan, to be born, 3rd person singular, perfect); महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; (mahā = great, tapāḥ = ascetic); परमर्षिः (paramarṣiḥ) - supreme seer; (parama = supreme, ṛṣi = seer); महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; (mahā = great, yogī = yogi); अरणीगर्भसम्भवः (araṇīgarbhasambhavaḥ) - born from the womb of the fire-stick; (araṇī = fire-stick, garbha = womb, sambhavaḥ = born);]
(In the fire-stick being churned but Śuka was born, great ascetic, supreme seer, great yogi, born from the womb of the fire-stick.)
But as the fire-stick was being churned, Śuka, the great ascetic, supreme seer, and great yogi, was born from the womb of the fire-stick. (12-311-9)
यथाध्वरे समिद्धोऽग्निर्भाति हव्यमुपात्तवान्। तथारूपः शुको जज्ञे प्रज्वलन्निव तेजसा ॥१२-३११-१०॥
yathādhvare samiddho'gnirbhāti havyamupāttavān। tathārūpaḥ śuko jajñe prajvalanniva tejasā ॥12-311-10॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; अध्वरे (adhvare) - in the sacrifice; समिद्धः (samiddhaḥ) - kindled; ignited; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; भाति (bhāti) - shines; हव्यम् (havyam) - oblation; उपात्तवान् (upāttavān) - having taken up; having received; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; रूपः (rūpaḥ) - form; appearance; शुकः (śukaḥ) - parrot; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; प्रज्वलन् (prajvalan) - blazing; shining; इव (iva) - like; as if; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; by splendor;]
(Just as in the sacrifice the kindled fire shines having taken up the oblation, so the parrot was born with such a form, blazing as if by brilliance.)

बिभ्रत्पितुश्च कौरव्य रूपवर्णमनुत्तमम्। बभौ तदा भावितात्मा विधूमोऽग्निरिव ज्वलन् ॥१२-३११-११॥
bibhratpituśca kauravya rūpavarṇamanuttamam। babhau tadā bhāvitātmā vidhūmo'gniriva jvalan ॥12-311-11॥
[बिभ्रत् (bibhrat) - bearing; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; च (ca) - and; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; रूपवर्णम् (rūpavarṇam) - form and complexion; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; बभौ (babhau) - shone; तदा (tadā) - then; भावितात्मा (bhāvitātmā) - purified soul; विधूमः (vidhūmaḥ) - smokeless; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - blazing;]
(Bearing the unsurpassed form and complexion of his father, O Kauravya, then the purified soul shone, blazing like a smokeless fire.)
O Kauravya, bearing the unsurpassed form and complexion of his father, at that time the purified-souled one shone, blazing like a smokeless fire. (12-311-11)
तं गङ्गा सरितां श्रेष्ठा मेरुपृष्ठे जनेश्वर। स्वरूपिणी तदाभ्येत्य स्नापयामास वारिणा ॥१२-३११-१२॥
taṃ gaṅgā saritāṃ śreṣṭhā merupṛṣṭhe janeśvara। svarūpiṇī tadābhyetya snāpayāmāsa vāriṇā ॥12-311-12॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; सरितां (saritāṃ) - of rivers; श्रेष्ठा (śreṣṭhā) - the best; मेरुपृष्ठे (merupṛṣṭhe) - on the back of Meru; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of men; स्वरूपिणी (svarūpiṇī) - in her own form; तदा (tadā) - then; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; स्नापयामास (snāpayāmāsa) - caused to bathe; वारिणा (vāriṇā) - with water;]
(Him Gaṅgā, of rivers the best, on the back of Meru, O lord of men, in her own form, then, having approached, caused to bathe with water.)
O lord of men, then Gaṅgā, the best of rivers, in her own form, having approached him on the back of Meru, bathed him with water. (12-311-12)
अन्तरिक्षाच्च कौरव्य दण्डः कृष्णाजिनं च ह। पपात भुवि राजेन्द्र शुकस्यार्थे महात्मनः ॥१२-३११-१३॥
antarikṣācca kauravya daṇḍaḥ kṛṣṇājinaṃ ca ha। papāta bhuvi rājendra śukasya arthe mahātmanaḥ ॥12-311-13॥
[अन्तरिक्षात् (antarikṣāt) - from the sky; च (ca) - and; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; दण्डः (daṇḍaḥ) - staff; कृष्णाजिनं (kṛṣṇājinam) - black antelope skin; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; पपात (papāta) - fell; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; शुकस्य (śukasya) - of Śuka; अर्थे (arthe) - for the sake; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(From the sky and, O Kauravya, the staff and the black antelope skin also indeed fell on the ground, O king, for the sake of Śuka, the great-souled.)
O descendant of Kuru, the staff and the black antelope skin also fell from the sky to the ground, O king, for the sake of the great-souled Śuka. (12-311-13)
जेगीयन्ते स्म गन्धर्वा ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः। देवदुन्दुभयश्चैव प्रावाद्यन्त महास्वनाः ॥१२-३११-१४॥
jegīyante sma gandharvā nanṛtuś cāpsarogaṇāḥ। devadundubhayaś caiva prāvādyanta mahāsvanāḥ ॥12-311-14॥
[जेगीयन्ते (jegīyante) - were sung; (passive, from gā, to sing) स्म (sma) - indeed; (particle indicating past) गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; (celestial musicians) ननृतुः (nanṛtuḥ) - danced; (from nṛt, to dance) च (ca) - and; अप्सरोगणाः (apsarogaṇāḥ) - groups of Apsarases; (celestial nymphs) देवदुन्दुभयः (devadundubhayaḥ) - divine drums; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रावाद्यन्त (prāvādyanta) - were sounded; (from vādi, to sound) महास्वनाः (mahāsvanāḥ) - with great sound;]

विश्वावसुश्च गन्धर्वस्तथा तुम्बुरुनारदौ। हाहाहूहू च गन्धर्वौ तुष्टुवुः शुकसम्भवम् ॥१२-३११-१५॥
viśvāvasuś ca gandharvas tathā tumburu-nāradau। hāhāhūhū ca gandharvau tuṣṭuvuḥ śukasambhavam ॥12-311-15॥

तत्र शक्रपुरोगाश्च लोकपालाः समागताः। देवा देवर्षयश्चैव तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽपि च ॥१२-३११-१६॥

दिव्यानि सर्वपुष्पाणि प्रववर्षात्र मारुतः। जङ्गमं स्थावरं चैव प्रहृष्टमभवज्जगत् ॥१२-३११-१७॥
divyāni sarvapuṣpāṇi pravavarṣātra mārutaḥ। jaṅgamaṃ sthāvaraṃ caiva prahṛṣṭamabhavajjagat ॥12-311-17॥
[दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; (things); सर्वपुष्पाणि (sarvapuṣpāṇi) - all flowers; प्रववर्ष (pravavarṣa) - caused to rain; अत्र (atra) - here; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - the wind; जङ्गमं (jaṅgamam) - moving (beings); स्थावरं (sthāvaram) - non-moving (beings); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रहृष्टम् (prahṛṣṭam) - delighted; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(Divine all flowers caused to rain here the wind; moving non-moving and indeed delighted became the world.)
Here, the wind caused all divine flowers to rain down; both moving and non-moving beings, indeed, the entire world became delighted. (12-311-17)
तं महात्मा स्वयं प्रीत्या देव्या सह महाद्युतिः। जातमात्रं मुनेः पुत्रं विधिनोपानयत्तदा ॥१२-३११-१८॥
taṃ mahātmā svayaṃ prītyā devyā saha mahādyutiḥ। jātamātraṃ muneḥ putraṃ vidhinopānayattadā ॥12-311-18॥

(Him the great-souled one himself with affection with the goddess together the greatly radiant one just born of the sage son according to the rite initiated then.)
Then, the greatly radiant great-souled one himself, together with the goddess and with affection, initiated the just-born son of the sage according to the rite. (12-311-18)
तस्य देवेश्वरः शक्रो दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम्। ददौ कमण्डलुं प्रीत्या देववासांसि चाभिभो ॥१२-३११-१९॥
tasya deveśvaraḥ śakro divyamadbhutadarśanam। dadau kamaṇḍaluṃ prītyā devavāsāṃsi cābhibho ॥12-311-19॥

(Of him, the lord of the gods, Śakra, with a divine, wonderful appearance, gave a water-pot, with affection, divine garments, and (said) O mighty one.)
Śakra, the lord of the gods, with a divine and wonderful appearance, affectionately gave him a water-pot and divine garments, saying, "O mighty one." (12-311-19)
हंसाश्च शतपत्राश्च सारसाश्च सहस्रशः। प्रदक्षिणमवर्तन्त शुकाश्चाषाश्च भारत ॥१२-३११-२०॥
haṁsāś ca śatapatrāś ca sārasāś ca sahasraśaḥ। pradakṣiṇam avartanta śukāś cāṣāś ca bhārata ॥12-311-20॥

आरणेयस्तथा दिव्यं प्राप्य जन्म महाद्युतिः। तत्रैवोवास मेधावी व्रतचारी समाहितः ॥१२-३११-२१॥
āraṇeyas tathā divyaṃ prāpya janma mahādyutiḥ। tatraiva uvāsa medhāvī vratacārī samāhitaḥ ॥12-311-21॥

Thus, the son of Aruṇa, having attained a divine birth and great splendor, dwelt there, wise, devoted to vows, and composed. (12-311-21)
उत्पन्नमात्रं तं वेदाः सरहस्याः ससङ्ग्रहाः। उपतस्थुर्महाराज यथास्य पितरं तथा ॥१२-३११-२२॥
utpannamātraṃ taṃ vedāḥ sarahasyaḥ sasaṅgrahāḥ। upatastthurmahārāja yathāsya pitaraṃ tathā ॥12-311-22॥

(Just-born him the Vedas with secrets with collections attended, O great king, just as his father so.)
O great king, as soon as he was born, the Vedas, along with their secrets and collections, attended upon him just as they did upon his father. (12-311-22)
बृहस्पतिं तु वव्रे स वेदवेदाङ्गभाष्यवित्। उपाध्यायं महाराज धर्ममेवानुचिन्तयन् ॥१२-३११-२३॥
bṛhaspatiṃ tu vavre sa vedavedāṅgabhāṣyavit। upādhyāyaṃ mahārāja dharmamevānucintayan ॥12-311-23॥

सोऽधीत्य वेदानखिलान्सरहस्यान्ससङ्ग्रहान्। इतिहासं च कार्त्स्न्येन राजशास्त्राणि चाभिभो ॥१२-३११-२४॥
so'dhītya vedānakhilānsarahasyānsasaṅgrahān। itihāsaṃ ca kārtsnyena rājaśāstrāṇi cābhibho ॥12-311-24॥

गुरवे दक्षिणां दत्त्वा समावृत्तो महामुनिः। उग्रं तपः समारेभे ब्रह्मचारी समाहितः ॥१२-३११-२५॥
gurave dakṣiṇāṃ dattvā samāvṛtto mahāmuniḥ। ugraṃ tapaḥ samārebhe brahmacārī samāhitaḥ ॥12-311-25॥

देवतानामृषीणां च बाल्येऽपि स महातपाः। संमन्त्रणीयो मान्यश्च ज्ञानेन तपसा तथा ॥१२-३११-२६॥
devatānām ṛṣīṇāṃ ca bālye'pi sa mahātapāḥ। saṃmantraṇīyo mānyaś ca jñānena tapasā tathā ॥12-311-26॥
[देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the deities; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; च (ca) - and; बाल्ये (bālye) - in childhood; अपि (api) - even; स (sa) - he; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; संमन्त्रणीयः (saṃmantraṇīyaḥ) - to be consulted; मान्यः (mānyaḥ) - respected; च (ca) - and; ज्ञानेन (jñānena) - by knowledge; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]

Even in his childhood, he, the great ascetic, was to be consulted and respected by the deities and sages alike, due to his knowledge and austerity. (12-311-26)
न त्वस्य रमते बुद्धिराश्रमेषु नराधिप। त्रिषु गार्हस्थ्यमूलेषु मोक्षधर्मानुदर्शिनः ॥१२-३११-२७॥
na tvasya ramate buddhirāśrameṣu narādhipa। triṣu gārhasthyamūleṣu mokṣadharmānudarśinaḥ ॥12-311-27॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; अस्य (asya) - his; रमते (ramate) - delights; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; आश्रमेषु (āśrameṣu) - in the āśramas; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; गार्हस्थ्यमूलेषु (gārhasthyamūleṣu) - in the roots of householdership; मोक्षधर्म (mokṣadharma) - the dharma of liberation; अनुदर्शिनः (anudarśinaḥ) - one who observes;]
(But not his intellect delights in the āśramas, O king; in the three roots of householdership, one who observes the dharma of liberation.)
But, O king, his mind does not take pleasure in the āśramas; for one who observes the dharma of liberation, the three roots of householdership do not attract the intellect. (12-311-27)
