स मोक्षमनुचिन्त्यैव शुकः पितरमभ्यगात्। प्राहाभिवाद्य च गुरुं श्रेयोर्थी विनयान्वितः ॥१२-३१२-१॥
sa mokṣam-anucintyaiva śukaḥ pitaram-abhyagāt। prāhābhivādya ca guruṃ śreyorthī vinayānvitaḥ ॥12-312-1॥
[स (sa) - he; मोक्षम् (mokṣam) - liberation; अनुचिन्त्य (anucintya) - having reflected upon; एव (eva) - indeed; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; अभ्यगात् (abhyagāt) - approached; प्राह (prāha) - said; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; च (ca) - and; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher; श्रेयः-अर्थी (śreyaḥ-arthī) - one seeking the highest good; विनय-अन्वितः (vinaya-anvitaḥ) - endowed with humility;]
(He, having indeed reflected upon liberation, Śuka approached his father; having saluted and being one seeking the highest good, endowed with humility, said to the teacher.)
Śuka, after deeply contemplating liberation, approached his father. Humbly saluting his teacher and seeking the highest good, he spoke. (12-312-1)
मोक्षधर्मेषु कुशलो भगवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे। यथा मे मनसः शान्तिः परमा सम्भवेत्प्रभो ॥१२-३१२-२॥
mokṣadharmeṣu kuśalo bhagavān prabravītu me। yathā me manasaḥ śāntiḥ paramā sambhavet prabho ॥12-312-2॥
[मोक्षधर्मेषु (mokṣadharmeṣu) - in the duties relating to liberation; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O revered one; प्रब्रवीतु (prabravītu) - may (he) declare; मे (me) - to me; यथा (yathā) - so that; मे (me) - my; मनसः (manasaḥ) - of mind; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; परमा (paramā) - supreme; सम्भवेत् (sambhavet) - may arise; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(In the duties relating to liberation, skilled, O revered one, may (he) declare to me; so that my mind's peace, supreme, may arise, O lord.)
O revered one skilled in the duties of liberation, may you declare to me so that supreme peace of mind may arise for me, O lord. (12-312-2)
श्रुत्वा पुत्रस्य वचनं परमर्षिरुवाच तम्। अधीष्व पुत्र मोक्षं वै धर्मांश्च विविधानपि ॥१२-३१२-३॥
śrutvā putrasya vacanaṃ paramarṣiruvāca tam। adhīṣva putra mokṣaṃ vai dharmāṃś ca vividhān api ॥12-312-3॥

(Having heard the speech of the son, the supreme sage said to him. Learn, O son, liberation indeed and also the various dharmas. (12-312-3))
Having listened to his son's words, the supreme sage spoke to him: "O son, study liberation and also the various dharmas." (12-312-3)
पितुर्नियोगाज्जग्राह शुको ब्रह्मविदां वरः। योगशास्त्रं च निखिलं कापिलं चैव भारत ॥१२-३१२-४॥
piturniyogājjagrāha śuko brahmavidāṃ varaḥ। yogaśāstraṃ ca nikhilaṃ kāpilaṃ caiva bhārata ॥12-312-4॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by the instruction; जग्राह (jagrāha) - accepted; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; ब्रह्मविदाम् (brahmavidām) - of the knowers of Brahman; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; योगशास्त्रं (yogaśāstraṃ) - the science of Yoga; च (ca) - and; निखिलं (nikhilaṃ) - entire; कापिलं (kāpilaṃ) - of Kapila; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of the father by the instruction accepted Śuka of the knowers of Brahman the best; the science of Yoga and the entire (teaching) of Kapila and indeed, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, by his father's instruction, Śuka, the best among the knowers of Brahman, accepted the science of Yoga and the entire teaching of Kapila. (12-312-4)
स तं ब्राह्म्या श्रिया युक्तं ब्रह्मतुल्यपराक्रमम्। मेने पुत्रं यदा व्यासो मोक्षविद्याविशारदम् ॥१२-३१२-५॥
sa taṃ brāhmyā śriyā yuktaṃ brahmatulyaparākramam। mene putraṃ yadā vyāso mokṣavidyāviśāradam ॥12-312-5॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - him; ब्राह्म्या (brāhmyā) - with divine; श्रिया (śriyā) - splendor; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - endowed; ब्रह्मतुल्यपराक्रमम् (brahmatulyaparākramam) - having valor equal to Brahman; मेने (mene) - considered; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; यदा (yadā) - when; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; मोक्षविद्याविशारदम् (mokṣavidyāviśāradam) - expert in the knowledge of liberation;]
(He him with divine splendor endowed, having valor equal to Brahman, considered son when Vyāsa expert in the knowledge of liberation.)
He considered him, endowed with divine splendor and valor equal to Brahman, as his son when Vyāsa became expert in the knowledge of liberation. (12-312-5)
उवाच गच्छेति तदा जनकं मिथिलेश्वरम्। स ते वक्ष्यति मोक्षार्थं निखिलेन विशेषतः ॥१२-३१२-६॥
uvāca gaccheti tadā janakaṃ mithileśvaram। sa te vakṣyati mokṣārthaṃ nikhilena viśeṣataḥ ॥12-312-6॥

(said go thus then Janaka the lord of Mithilā he to you will speak for the purpose of liberation completely especially)
He said, "Go," then to Janaka, the lord of Mithilā. He will tell you about liberation in full detail, especially. (12-312-6)
पितुर्नियोगादगमन्मैथिलं जनकं नृपम्। प्रष्टुं धर्मस्य निष्ठां वै मोक्षस्य च परायणम् ॥१२-३१२-७॥
piturniyogādagaman maithilaṃ janakaṃ nṛpam। praṣṭuṃ dharmasya niṣṭhāṃ vai mokṣasya ca parāyaṇam ॥12-312-7॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by the command; अगमत् (agamat) - he went; मैथिलम् (maithilam) - to the king of Mithila; जनकं (janakam) - Janaka; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; प्रष्टुम् (praṣṭum) - to ask; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; निष्ठाम् (niṣṭhām) - steadfastness; वै (vai) - indeed; मोक्षस्य (mokṣasya) - of mokṣa; च (ca) - and; परायणम् (parāyaṇam) - supreme goal;]
(By the command of the father, he went to the king of Mithila, Janaka, to ask about the steadfastness of dharma and indeed the supreme goal of mokṣa.)

उक्तश्च मानुषेण त्वं पथा गच्छेत्यविस्मितः। न प्रभावेण गन्तव्यमन्तरिक्षचरेण वै ॥१२-३१२-८॥
uktaś ca mānuṣeṇa tvaṃ pathā gacchety avismitaḥ। na prabhāveṇa gantavyam antarikṣacareṇa vai ॥12-312-8॥
[उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; said; च (ca) - and; मानुषेण (mānuṣeṇa) - by a human; by a man; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पथा (pathā) - by the path; by way; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; इति (iti) - thus; so; अविस्मितः (avismitaḥ) - not astonished; not amazed; न (na) - not; प्रभावेण (prabhāveṇa) - by power; by might; गन्तव्यम् (gantavyam) - to be gone; to be traversed; अन्तरिक्षचरेण (antarikṣacareṇa) - by one who moves in the sky; by a sky-wanderer; वै (vai) - indeed; truly;]
(Spoken and by a human you by the path go thus not astonished; not by power to be gone by a sky-wanderer indeed.)
And you, as spoken by a human, should go by the path, thus unastonished; it is not to be traversed by a sky-wanderer through power, indeed. (12-312-8)
आर्जवेणैव गन्तव्यं न सुखान्वेषिणा पथा। नान्वेष्टव्या विशेषास्तु विशेषा हि प्रसङ्गिनः ॥१२-३१२-९॥
ārjaveṇaiva gantavyaṃ na sukhānveṣiṇā pathā. nānveṣṭavyā viśeṣāstu viśeṣā hi prasaṅginaḥ ॥12-312-9॥
[आर्जवेण (ārjaveṇa) - by straightforwardness; एव (eva) - indeed; गन्तव्यं (gantavyam) - to be gone; (should be gone;) न (na) - not; सुखान्वेषिणा (sukhānveṣiṇā) - by one seeking pleasure; पथा (pathā) - by the path; न (na) - not; अन्वेष्टव्या (anveṣṭavyā) - to be sought; विशेषाः (viśeṣāḥ) - distinctions; तु (tu) - but; विशेषाः (viśeṣāḥ) - distinctions; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रसङ्गिनः (prasaṅginaḥ) - leading to attachment;]
(By straightforwardness indeed should be gone, not by the path of one seeking pleasure. Not to be sought are distinctions, for distinctions indeed lead to attachment. (12-312-9))

अहङ्कारो न कर्तव्यो याज्ये तस्मिन्नराधिपे। स्थातव्यं च वशे तस्य स ते छेत्स्यति संशयम् ॥१२-३१२-१०॥
ahaṅkāro na kartavyo yājye tasminnarādhipe। sthātavyaṃ ca vaśe tasya sa te chetsyati saṃśayam ॥12-312-10॥
[अहङ्कारः (ahaṅkāraḥ) - ego; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यः (kartavyaḥ) - to be done; याज्ये (yājye) - in the sacrifice; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नराधिपे (narādhipe) - king; स्थातव्यम् (sthātavyam) - should remain; च (ca) - and; वशे (vaśe) - under control; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सः (saḥ) - he; ते (te) - your; छेत्स्यति (chetsyati) - will cut off; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt;]
(Ego not to be done in the sacrifice, in that king; should remain and under control of him; he your will cut off doubt.)
Ego should not be harbored during the sacrifice in the presence of that king; you should remain under his control, for he will dispel your doubt. (12-312-10)
स धर्मकुशलो राजा मोक्षशास्त्रविशारदः। याज्यो मम स यद्ब्रूयात्तत्कार्यमविशङ्कया ॥१२-३१२-११॥
sa dharmakuśalo rājā mokṣaśāstraviśāradaḥ। yājyo mama sa yadbrūyāttatkāryamaviśaṅkayā ॥12-312-11॥
[स (sa) - he; धर्मकुशलः (dharmakuśalaḥ) - skilled in dharma; राजा (rājā) - king; मोक्षशास्त्रविशारदः (mokṣaśāstraviśāradaḥ) - expert in the science of liberation; याज्यः (yājyaḥ) - worthy to be worshipped; मम (mama) - my; स (sa) - he; यत् (yat) - what; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - might say; तत् (tat) - that; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; अविशङ्कया (aviśaṅkayā) - without doubt;]
(He, skilled in dharma, the king, expert in the science of liberation, worthy to be worshipped, my he, what might say, that to be done, without doubt.)
That king, skilled in dharma and expert in the science of liberation, who is worthy of worship and mine, whatever he might say, that should be done without any doubt. (12-312-11)
एवमुक्तः स धर्मात्मा जगाम मिथिलां मुनिः। पद्भ्यां शक्तोऽन्तरिक्षेण क्रान्तुं भूमिं ससागराम् ॥१२-३१२-१२॥
evam-uktaḥ sa dharmātmā jagāma mithilāṃ muniḥ। padbhyāṃ śakto'ntarikṣeṇa krāntuṃ bhūmiṃ sasāgarām ॥12-312-12॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; स (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; जगाम (jagāma) - went; मिथिलाम् (mithilām) - to Mithilā; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पद्भ्याम् (padbhyām) - with (his) feet; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - capable; अन्तरिक्षेण (antarikṣeṇa) - through the sky; क्रान्तुम् (krāntum) - to cross; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - the earth; ससागराम् (sasāgarām) - with oceans;]
(Thus addressed, he, the righteous-souled sage, went to Mithilā. With (his) feet, capable of crossing through the sky, (he went over) the earth with oceans.)

स गिरींश्चाप्यतिक्रम्य नदीस्तीर्त्वा सरांसि च। बहुव्यालमृगाकीर्णा विविधाश्चाटवीस्तथा ॥१२-३१२-१३॥
sa girīṁś cāpy atikramya nadīs tīrtvā sarāṁsi ca। bahu-vyāla-mṛga-ākīrṇā vividhāś cāṭavīs tathā ॥12-312-13॥
[स (sa) - he; गिरीन् (girīn) - mountains; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having crossed; नदीः (nadīḥ) - rivers; तीर्त्वा (tīrtvā) - having crossed; सरांसि (sarāṁsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; बहु (bahu) - many; व्याल (vyāla) - serpents; मृग (mṛga) - beasts; आकीर्णा (ākīrṇā) - filled; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; च (ca) - and; आटवीः (āṭavīḥ) - forests; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(He, having crossed mountains and also, having crossed rivers and lakes, and also various forests filled with many serpents and beasts.)

मेरोर्हरेश्च द्वे वर्षे वर्षं हैमवतं तथा। क्रमेणैव व्यतिक्रम्य भारतं वर्षमासदत् ॥१२-३१२-१४॥
meror hareś ca dve varṣe varṣaṃ haimavataṃ tathā। krameṇaiva vyatikramya bhārataṃ varṣam āsadat ॥12-312-14॥
[मेरोः (meroḥ) - of Meru; (the mountain); हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari; (Vishnu); च (ca) - and; द्वे (dve) - two; वर्षे (varṣe) - regions; (lands); वर्षं (varṣam) - region; (land); हैमवतं (haimavataṃ) - Haimavata; (of the Himalayas); तथा (tathā) - also; in the same way; क्रमेणैव (krameṇaiva) - in order only; व्यतिक्रम्य (vyatikramya) - having crossed over; भारतं (bhārataṃ) - Bharata; (India); वर्षम् (varṣam) - region; (land); आसदत् (āsadat) - reached; attained;]
(Of Meru and of Hari, two regions, the Haimavata region also, in order only, having crossed over, the Bharata region he reached.)

स देशान्विविधान्पश्यंश्चीनहूणनिषेवितान्। आर्यावर्तमिमं देशमाजगाम महामुनिः ॥१२-३१२-१५॥
sa deśān vividhān paśyaṁś cīnahūṇaniṣevitān। āryāvartam imaṁ deśam ājagāma mahāmuniḥ ॥12-312-15॥
[स (sa) - he; देशान् (deśān) - countries; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; चीनहूणनिषेवितान् (cīnahūṇaniṣevitān) - inhabited by Chinese and Hūṇas; आर्यावर्तम् (āryāvartam) - Āryāvarta; इमम् (imam) - this; देशम् (deśam) - country; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage;]
(He, seeing various countries inhabited by Chinese and Hūṇas, came to this country of Āryāvarta, the great sage.)
The great sage, after seeing various countries inhabited by the Chinese and Hūṇas, came to this land of Āryāvarta. (12-312-15)
पितुर्वचनमाज्ञाय तमेवार्थं विचिन्तयन्। अध्वानं सोऽतिचक्राम खेऽचरः खे चरन्निव ॥१२-३१२-१६॥
pitur vacanam ājñāya tam eva arthaṃ vicintayan। adhvānaṃ saḥ aticakrāma khe acaraḥ khe caran iva ॥12-312-16॥
[पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; आज्ञाय (ājñāya) - having understood; तम् (tam) - that; एव (eva) - only; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - reflecting; अध्वानम् (adhvānam) - the path; सः (saḥ) - he; अतिचक्राम (aticakrāma) - crossed over; खे (khe) - in the sky; अचरः (acaraḥ) - motionless; खे (khe) - in the sky; चरन् (caran) - moving; इव (iva) - as if;]
(Having understood the word of the father, reflecting only on that purpose, he crossed over the path, motionless in the sky, as if moving in the sky.)

पत्तनानि च रम्याणि स्फीतानि नगराणि च। रत्नानि च विचित्राणि शुकः पश्यन्न पश्यति ॥१२-३१२-१७॥
pattanāni ca ramyāṇi sphītāni nagarāṇi ca। ratnāni ca vicitrāṇi śukaḥ paśyann na paśyati ॥12-312-17॥
[पत्तनानि (pattanāni) - cities; च (ca) - and; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - beautiful; स्फीतानि (sphītāni) - prosperous; नगराणि (nagarāṇi) - towns; च (ca) - and; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - gems; च (ca) - and; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - various; शुकः (śukaḥ) - parrot; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; न (na) - not; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees;]
(cities and beautiful prosperous towns and gems and various the parrot seeing does not see.)

उद्यानानि च रम्याणि तथैवायतनानि च। पुण्यानि चैव तीर्थानि सोऽतिक्रम्य तथाध्वनः ॥१२-३१२-१८॥
udyānāni ca ramyāṇi tathaiva āyatanāni ca। puṇyāni caiva tīrthāni saḥ atikramya tathā adhvanaḥ ॥12-312-18॥
[उद्यानानि (udyānāni) - gardens; च (ca) - and; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - pleasant; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; आयतनानि (āyatanāni) - shrines; च (ca) - and; पुण्यानि (puṇyāni) - holy; चैव (ca eva) - and also; तीर्थानि (tīrthāni) - sacred fords; सः (saḥ) - he; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having passed; तथा (tathā) - thus; अध्वनः (adhvanaḥ) - on the way;]
(gardens and pleasant just so shrines and holy and also sacred fords he having passed thus on the way.)
He, having thus passed gardens, pleasant shrines, holy places, and sacred fords on the way, continued his journey. (12-312-18)
सोऽचिरेणैव कालेन विदेहानाससाद ह। रक्षितान्धर्मराजेन जनकेन महात्मना ॥१२-३१२-१९॥
so'cireṇaiva kālena videhānāsasāda ha। rakṣitāndharmarājena janakena mahātmanā ॥12-312-19॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अचिरेण (acireṇa) - in a short time; एव (eva) - indeed; कालेन (kālena) - by time; विदेहान् (videhān) - the Videhas; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; ह (ha) - indeed; रक्षितान् (rakṣitān) - protected; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmarāja; जनकेन (janakena) - by Janaka; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(He in a short time indeed by time the Videhas approached indeed; protected by Dharmarāja by Janaka by the great-souled one;)
He soon reached the Videhas, who were protected by Dharmarāja Janaka, the great-souled one. (12-312-19)
तत्र ग्रामान्बहून्पश्यन्बह्वन्नरसभोजनान्। पल्लीघोषान्समृद्धांश्च बहुगोकुलसङ्कुलान् ॥१२-३१२-२०॥
tatra grāmānbahūnpaśyanbahvannarasabhojanān। pallīghoṣānsamṛddhāṃśca bahugokulasaṅkulān ॥12-312-20॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; ग्रामान् (grāmān) - villages (accusative plural); बहून् (bahūn) - many; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; बहु-अन्न-रस-भोजनान् (bahu-anna-rasa-bhojanān) - having much food, taste, meals (accusative plural); पल्ली-घोषान् (pallī-ghoṣān) - hamlets and villages (accusative plural); समृद्धान् (samṛddhān) - prosperous; च (ca) - and; बहु-गोकुल-सङ्कुलान् (bahu-gokula-saṅkulān) - crowded with many cowherd settlements (accusative plural);]
(There, seeing many villages, having much food, taste, meals; prosperous hamlets and villages and crowded with many cowherd settlements.)
There he saw many villages, abundant with food and delicious meals, prosperous hamlets and settlements, all crowded with many herds of cattle. (12-312-20)
स्फीतांश्च शालियवसैर्हंससारससेवितान्। पद्मिनीभिश्च शतशः श्रीमतीभिरलङ्कृतान् ॥१२-३१२-२१॥
sphītāṁś ca śāli-yavasair haṁsa-sārasa-sevitān। padminībhiś ca śataśaḥ śrīmatībhiḥ alaṅkṛtān ॥12-312-21॥
[स्फीतान् (sphītān) - abundant; च (ca) - and; शालियवसैः (śāli-yavasaiḥ) - with rice and barley; हंससारससेवितान् (haṁsa-sārasa-sevitān) - frequented by swans and cranes; पद्मिनीभिः (padminībhiḥ) - with lotuses; च (ca) - and; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; श्रीमतीभिः (śrīmatībhiḥ) - by splendid (ones); अलङ्कृतान् (alaṅkṛtān) - adorned;]

स विदेहानतिक्रम्य समृद्धजनसेवितान्। मिथिलोपवनं रम्यमाससाद महर्द्धिमत् ॥१२-३१२-२२॥
sa videhān atikramya samṛddhajanasevitān। mithilopavanaṃ ramyam āsasāda maharddhimat ॥12-312-22॥

Having passed through the Videha region, which was inhabited by prosperous people, he arrived at the beautiful and splendid grove of Mithila. (12-312-22)
हस्त्यश्वरथसङ्कीर्णं नरनारीसमाकुलम्। पश्यन्नपश्यन्निव तत्समतिक्रामदच्युतः ॥१२-३१२-२३॥
hastyaśvarathasaṅkīrṇaṃ naranārīsamākulam। paśyannapaśyanniva tatsamatikrāmadacyutaḥ ॥12-312-23॥

(Elephant, horse, chariot mixed with, man, woman, crowded; seeing, not seeing, as if; that, was passing over, Acyuta;)
Acyuta (Krishna), as if seeing and not seeing, passed over that place crowded with men and women, mixed with elephants, horses, and chariots. (12-312-23)
मनसा तं वहन्भारं तमेवार्थं विचिन्तयन्। आत्मारामः प्रसन्नात्मा मिथिलामाससाद ह ॥१२-३१२-२४॥
manasā taṃ vahanbhāraṃ tamevāarthaṃ vicintayan। ātmārāmaḥ prasannātmā mithilāmāsasāda ha ॥12-312-24॥

तस्या द्वारं समासाद्य द्वारपालैर्निवारितः। स्थितो ध्यानपरो मुक्तो विदितः प्रविवेश ह ॥१२-३१२-२५॥
tasyā dvāraṃ samāsādya dvārapālairnivāritaḥ। sthito dhyānaparo mukto viditaḥ praviveśa ha ॥12-312-25॥

Having reached her door and being stopped by the doorkeepers, he stood there, absorbed in meditation, liberated and recognized, and then indeed entered. (12-312-25)
स राजमार्गमासाद्य समृद्धजनसङ्कुलम्। पार्थिवक्षयमासाद्य निःशङ्कः प्रविवेश ह ॥१२-३१२-२६॥
sa rājamārgam āsādya samṛddhajana-saṅkulam। pārthiva-kṣayam āsādya niḥśaṅkaḥ praviveśa ha ॥12-312-26॥

He reached the royal road, thronged with prosperous people, and, coming to the king's palace, entered without fear. (12-312-26)
तत्रापि द्वारपालास्तमुग्रवाचो न्यषेधयन्। तथैव च शुकस्तत्र निर्मन्युः समतिष्ठत ॥१२-३१२-२७॥
tatrāpi dvārapālāstamugravāco nyaṣedhayan। tathaiva ca śukastatra nirmanyuḥ samatiṣṭhata ॥12-312-27॥

(There also the door-guards, harsh-spoken, prevented him. In the same way, Śuka there, without anger, stood.)

न चातपाध्वसन्तप्तः क्षुत्पिपासाश्रमान्वितः। प्रताम्यति ग्लायति वा नापैति च तथातपात् ॥१२-३१२-२८॥
na cātapādhvasantaptaḥ kṣutpipāsāśramānvitaḥ। pratāmyati glāyati vā nāpaiti ca tathātapāt ॥12-312-28॥

(Not and scorched by sun and journey, endowed with hunger, thirst, and fatigue, he faints, becomes weak or not departs and thus from the sun.)
He, scorched by the sun and journey, and afflicted with hunger, thirst, and fatigue, neither faints nor becomes weak, nor does he depart thus from the sun. (12-312-28)
तेषां तु द्वारपालानामेकः शोकसमन्वितः। मध्यङ्गतमिवादित्यं दृष्ट्वा शुकमवस्थितम् ॥१२-३१२-२९॥
teṣāṃ tu dvārapālānāmekaḥ śokasamanvitaḥ। madhyaṅgatamivādityaṃ dṛṣṭvā śukamavasthitam ॥12-312-29॥

(Of them but of the gatekeepers one endowed with sorrow, having seen Śuka standing like the sun situated in the middle.)

पूजयित्वा यथान्यायमभिवाद्य कृताञ्जलिः। प्रावेशयत्ततः कक्ष्यां द्वितीयां राजवेश्मनः ॥१२-३१२-३०॥
pūjayitvā yathā-nyāyam abhivādya kṛtāñjaliḥ। prāveśayat tataḥ kakṣyāṃ dvitīyāṃ rājaveśmanaḥ ॥12-312-30॥

तत्रासीनः शुकस्तात मोक्षमेवानुचिन्तयन्। छायायामातपे चैव समदर्शी महाद्युतिः ॥१२-३१२-३१॥
tatrāsīnaḥ śukastāta mokṣamevānucintayan। chāyāyāmātape caiva samadarśī mahādyutiḥ ॥12-312-31॥

तं मुहूर्तादिवागम्य राज्ञो मन्त्री कृताञ्जलिः। प्रावेशयत्ततः कक्ष्यां तृतीयां राजवेश्मनः ॥१२-३१२-३२॥
taṃ muhūrtādivāgamya rājño mantrī kṛtāñjaliḥ। prāveśayattataḥ kakṣyāṃ tṛtīyāṃ rājaveśmanaḥ ॥12-312-32॥

तत्रान्तःपुरसम्बद्धं महच्चैत्ररथोपमम्। सुविभक्तजलाक्रीडं रम्यं पुष्पितपादपम् ॥१२-३१२-३३॥
tatrāntaḥpurasambaddhaṃ mahaccaitrarathopamam। suvibhaktajalākrīḍaṃ ramyaṃ puṣpitapādapam ॥12-312-33॥

तद्दर्शयित्वा स शुकं मन्त्री काननमुत्तमम्। अर्हमासनमादिश्य निश्चक्राम ततः पुनः ॥१२-३१२-३४॥
taddarśayitvā sa śukaṃ mantrī kānanamuttamam। arhamāsanamādiśya niścakrāma tataḥ punaḥ ॥12-312-34॥

तं चारुवेषाः सुश्रोण्यस्तरुण्यः प्रियदर्शनाः। सूक्ष्मरक्ताम्बरधरास्तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाः ॥१२-३१२-३५॥
taṃ cāruveṣāḥ suśroṇyas taruṇyaḥ priyadarśanāḥ। sūkṣmaraktāmbaradharās taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ ॥12-312-35॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; चारुवेषाः (cāru-veṣāḥ) - having beautiful attire; सुश्रोण्यः (su-śroṇyaḥ) - having beautiful hips; तरुण्यः (taruṇyaḥ) - young women; प्रियदर्शनाः (priya-darśanāḥ) - pleasant to behold; सूक्ष्मरक्ताम्बरधराः (sūkṣma-rakta-ambara-dharāḥ) - wearing fine red garments; तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाः (tapta-kāñcana-bhūṣaṇāḥ) - adorned with molten gold ornaments;]
(Him, having beautiful attire, having beautiful hips, young women, pleasant to behold, wearing fine red garments, adorned with molten gold ornaments.)

संलापोल्लापकुशला नृत्तगीतविशारदाः। स्मितपूर्वाभिभाषिण्यो रूपेणाप्सरसां समाः ॥१२-३१२-३६॥
saṁlāpollāpakuśalā nṛttagītaviśāradāḥ। smitapūrvābhibhāṣiṇyo rūpeṇāpsarasāṁ samāḥ ॥12-312-36॥
[संलाप (saṁlāpa) - conversation; speech; उल्लाप (ullāpa) - charming talk; pleasant speech; कुशला (kuśalā) - skilled; adept; नृत्त (nṛtta) - dance; गीत (gīta) - song; singing; विशारदाः (viśāradāḥ) - expert; proficient; स्मित (smita) - smile; पूर्व (pūrva) - before; prior; अभिभाषिण्यः (abhibhāṣiṇyaḥ) - those who speak; speakers; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; by beauty; अप्सरसाम् (apsarasām) - of the apsarases; of celestial nymphs; समाः (samāḥ) - equal; like;]
(Skilled in conversation and charming talk, expert in dance and song, who speak first with a smile, equal in beauty to the apsarases.)

कामोपचारकुशला भावज्ञाः सर्वकोविदाः। परं पञ्चाशतो नार्यो वारमुख्याः समाद्रवन् ॥१२-३१२-३७॥
kāmopacārakuśalā bhāvajñāḥ sarvakovidāḥ। paraṃ pañcāśato nāryo vāramukhyāḥ samādravan ॥12-312-37॥
[काम-उपचार-कुशला (kāma-upacāra-kuśalā) - skilled in the service of desire; भाव-ज्ञाः (bhāva-jñāḥ) - knowers of feelings; सर्व-कोविदाः (sarva-kovidāḥ) - all-wise; परम् (param) - further; पञ्चाशतः (pañcāśataḥ) - fifty; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; वार-मुख्याः (vāra-mukhyāḥ) - chief courtesans; सम्-आद्रवन् (sam-ādravan) - together ran toward;]

पाद्यादीनि प्रतिग्राह्य पूजया परयार्च्य च। देशकालोपपन्नेन साध्वन्नेनाप्यतर्पयन् ॥१२-३१२-३८॥

(Playing ones and laughing ones and singing ones indeed, they (feminine) the parrot of noble nature, knowers of essence, all (feminine), attended upon then.)

आरणेयस्तु शुद्धात्मा त्रिसंदेहस्त्रिकर्मकृत्। वश्येन्द्रियो जितक्रोधो न हृष्यति न कुप्यति ॥१२-३१२-४१॥
āraṇeyas tu śuddhātmā trisaṃdehas trikarmakṛt। vaśyendriyo jitakrodho na hṛṣyati na kupyati ॥12-312-41॥
[आरणेयः (āraṇeyaḥ) - descendant of Araṇa; तु (tu) - but; शुद्धात्मा (śuddhātmā) - pure-souled; त्रिसंदेहः (trisaṃdehaḥ) - having three bodies; त्रिकर्मकृत् (trikarmakṛt) - performer of three actions; वश्येन्द्रियः (vaśyendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are controlled; जितक्रोधः (jitakrodhaḥ) - one who has conquered anger; न (na) - not; हृष्यति (hṛṣyati) - rejoices; न (na) - not; कुप्यति (kupyati) - becomes angry;]
(āraṇeyaḥ but pure-souled having three bodies performer of three actions one whose senses are controlled one who has conquered anger not rejoices not becomes angry.)
But the descendant of Araṇa, pure in soul, possessing three bodies and performing three actions, with senses under control and anger conquered, neither rejoices nor becomes angry. (12-312-41)
तस्मै शय्यासनं दिव्यं वरार्हं रत्नभूषितम्। स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंस्तीर्णं ददुस्ताः परमस्त्रियः ॥१२-३१२-४२॥
tasmai śayyāsanaṃ divyaṃ varārhaṃ ratnabhūṣitam। spardhyāstaraṇasaṃstīrṇaṃ dadustāḥ paramastriyaḥ ॥12-312-42॥

(To him, a bed-seat divine, worthy of the best, adorned with jewels, splendid, with covering well-spread, those supreme women gave.)

पादशौचं तु कृत्वैव शुकः सन्ध्यामुपास्य च। निषसादासने पुण्ये तमेवार्थं विचिन्तयन् ॥१२-३१२-४३॥
pādaśaucaṃ tu kṛtvaiva śukaḥ sandhyāmupāsya ca। niṣasādāsane puṇye tamevārthaṃ vicintayan ॥12-312-43॥

(Having performed foot-purification indeed, Śuka, having worshipped the twilight and, sat down on the auspicious seat, reflecting on that very purpose.)
Śuka, after purifying his feet and performing the twilight worship, sat on the auspicious seat, contemplating that very purpose. (12-312-43)
पूर्वरात्रे तु तत्रासौ भूत्वा ध्यानपरायणः। मध्यरात्रे यथान्यायं निद्रामाहारयत्प्रभुः ॥१२-३१२-४४॥
pūrvarātre tu tatrāsau bhūtvā dhyānaparāyaṇaḥ। madhyarātre yathānyāyaṃ nidrām āhārayat prabhuḥ ॥12-312-44॥
[पूर्वरात्रे (pūrvarātre) - in the early night; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; असौ (asau) - he; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; ध्यानपरायणः (dhyānaparāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to meditation; मध्यरात्रे (madhyarātre) - at midnight; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्यायं (anyāyaṃ) - properly; निद्राम् (nidrām) - sleep; आहारयत् (āhārayat) - he took; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(In the early night but there he having become devoted to meditation; at midnight as properly sleep he took the lord.)
But in the early part of the night, he was there, absorbed in meditation; at midnight, the lord took sleep as was proper. (12-312-44)
ततो मुहूर्तादुत्थाय कृत्वा शौचमनन्तरम्। स्त्रीभिः परिवृतो धीमान्ध्यानमेवान्वपद्यत ॥१२-३१२-४५॥
tato muhūrtād utthāya kṛtvā śaucam anantaram। strībhiḥ parivṛto dhīmān dhyānam eva anvapadyata ॥12-312-45॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मुहूर्तात् (muhūrtāt) - after a moment; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; शौचम् (śaucam) - purification; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - immediately after; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - by women; परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise one; ध्यानम् (dhyānam) - meditation; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्वपद्यत (anvapadyata) - engaged in;]
(Then, after a moment, having risen, having done purification immediately after, surrounded by women, the wise one indeed engaged in meditation.)
Then, after a short while, having risen and performed purification immediately, the wise one, surrounded by women, engaged himself in meditation. (12-312-45)
अनेन विधिना कार्ष्णिस्तदहःशेषमच्युतः। तां च रात्रिं नृपकुले वर्तयामास भारत ॥१२-३१२-४६॥
anena vidhinā kārṣṇis tad ahaḥśeṣam acyutaḥ। tāṃ ca rātriṃ nṛpakule vartayāmāsa bhārata ॥12-312-46॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; विधिना (vidhinā) - by method; कार्ष्णिः (kārṣṇiḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; तद् (tad) - that; अहःशेषम् (ahaḥśeṣam) - remaining of the day; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - Acyuta; ताम् (tām) - that; च (ca) - and; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; नृपकुले (nṛpakule) - in the king's house; वर्तयामास (vartayāmāsa) - spent; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By this method Kṛṣṇa, Acyuta, spent the remaining of that day and that night in the king's house, O Bhārata.)
In this way, Kṛṣṇa (Acyuta) spent the rest of that day and the night in the king's palace, O Bhārata. (12-312-46)
