Bhishma said.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं कृतात्मा कृतनिश्चयः। आत्मनात्मानमास्थाय दृष्ट्वा चात्मानमात्मना ॥१२-३१४-१॥
etacchrutvā tu vacanaṃ kṛtātmā kṛtaniścayaḥ। ātmanātmānam āsthāya dṛṣṭvā cātmānam ātmanā ॥12-314-1॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; कृतात्मा (kṛtātmā) - one whose self is accomplished; कृतनिश्चयः (kṛtaniścayaḥ) - one whose resolve is made; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by the self; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by the self;]
(Having heard this speech, the one whose self is accomplished, whose resolve is made, having resorted to the self by the self, and having seen the self by the self;)
Having heard this speech, the self-controlled and resolute one, relying on his own self and perceiving the self by the self, acted accordingly. (12-314-1)
कृतकार्यः सुखी शान्तस्तूष्णीं प्रायादुदङ्मुखः। शैशिरं गिरिमुद्दिश्य सधर्मा मातरिश्वनः ॥१२-३१४-२॥
kṛtakāryaḥ sukhī śāntastūṣṇīṃ prāyādudaṅmukhaḥ। śaiśiraṃ girimuddiśya sadharmā mātariśvanaḥ ॥12-314-2॥
[कृतकार्यः (kṛtakāryaḥ) - one whose task is accomplished; सुखी (sukhī) - happy; शान्तः (śāntaḥ) - peaceful; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīm) - silently; प्रायात् (prāyāt) - departed; उदङ्मुखः (udaṅmukhaḥ) - facing north; शैशिरम् (śaiśiram) - (towards) the Himālaya; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; उद्दिश्य (uddiśya) - having directed (his mind or steps); सधर्मा (sadharmā) - companion in dharma; मातरिश्वनः (mātariśvanaḥ) - of Mātariśvan (Wind-god);]
(One whose task is accomplished, happy, peaceful, silently departed facing north, having directed (his mind or steps) towards the Himālaya mountain, companion in dharma of Mātariśvan.)
Having accomplished his task, happy and peaceful, he silently departed facing north, directing himself towards the Himālaya mountain, as a companion in dharma of Mātariśvan (the Wind-god). (12-314-2)
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु देवर्षिर्नारदस्तदा। हिमवन्तमियाद्द्रष्टुं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ॥१२-३१४-३॥
etasminn eva kāle tu devarṣir nāradas tadā। himavantam iyād draṣṭuṃ siddhacāraṇasevitam ॥12-314-3॥

(In this very time but the divine sage Nārada then Himavat would go to see attended by Siddhas and Cāraṇas.)
At that very time, the divine sage Nārada went to the Himalaya, which was frequented by Siddhas and Cāraṇas, to see it. (12-314-3)
तमप्सरोगणाकीर्णं गीतस्वननिनादितम्। किंनराणां समूहैश्च भृङ्गराजैस्तथैव च ॥१२-३१४-४॥
tam apsarogaṇākīrṇaṃ gītasvananināditam। kiṃnarāṇāṃ samūhaiś ca bhṛṅgarājais tathaiva ca ॥12-314-4॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अप्सरोगणाकीर्णम् (apsarogaṇākīrṇam) - filled with groups of apsarases; गीतस्वननिनादितम् (gītasvananināditam) - resounded with the sound of singing; किंनराणाम् (kiṃnarāṇām) - of kinnaras; समूहैः (samūhaiḥ) - by groups; च (ca) - and; भृङ्गराजैः (bhṛṅgarājaiḥ) - by king bees; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(That, filled with groups of apsarases, resounded with the sound of singing; by groups of kinnaras and by king bees likewise and.)
That place, filled with groups of apsarases, resounded with the sound of singing, and was likewise accompanied by groups of kinnaras and king bees. (12-314-4)
मद्गुभिः खञ्जरीटैश्च विचित्रैर्जीवजीवकैः। चित्रवर्णैर्मयूरैश्च केकाशतविराजितैः ॥ राजहंससमूहैश्च हृष्टैः परभृतैस्तथा ॥१२-३१४-५॥
madgubhiḥ khañjarīṭaiś ca vicitrair jīvajīvakaiḥ। citravarṇair mayūraiś ca kekāśatavirājitaiḥ॥ rājahaṃsasamūhaiś ca hṛṣṭaiḥ parabhṛtais tathā॥12-314-5॥
[मद्गुभिः (madgubhiḥ) - with dabchicks; खञ्जरीटैः (khañjarīṭaiḥ) - with wagtails; च (ca) - and; विचित्रैः (vicitraiḥ) - variegated; जीवजीवकैः (jīvajīvakaiḥ) - with jīvajīvaka birds; चित्रवर्णैः (citravarṇaiḥ) - with variegated colors; मयूरैः (mayūraiḥ) - with peacocks; च (ca) - and; केकाशतविराजितैः (kekāśatavirājitaiḥ) - adorned with hundreds of cries; राजहंससमूहैः (rājahaṃsasamūhaiḥ) - with flocks of royal swans; च (ca) - and; हृष्टैः (hṛṣṭaiḥ) - joyful; परभृतैः (parabhṛtaiḥ) - with songbirds; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(With dabchicks, with wagtails and variegated jīvajīvaka birds, with peacocks of variegated colors and adorned with hundreds of cries, with flocks of royal swans and joyful songbirds also.)
There were dabchicks, wagtails, various jīvajīvaka birds, peacocks of many colors resounding with hundreds of cries, as well as flocks of royal swans and joyful songbirds. (12-314-5)
पक्षिराजो गरुत्मांश्च यं नित्यमधिगच्छति। चत्वारो लोकपालाश्च देवाः सर्षिगणास्तथा ॥ यत्र नित्यं समायान्ति लोकस्य हितकाम्यया ॥१२-३१४-६॥
pakṣirājo garutmāṁś ca yaṁ nityam adhigacchati। catvāro lokapālāś ca devāḥ saṛṣigaṇās tathā ॥ yatra nityaṁ samāyānti lokasya hitakāmyayā ॥12-314-6॥
[पक्षिराजः (pakṣirājaḥ) - king of birds; गरुत्मान् (garutmān) - Garuda; च (ca) - and; यं (yaṁ) - whom; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अधिगच्छति (adhigacchati) - approaches; चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; लोकपालाः (lokapālāḥ) - guardians of the worlds; च (ca) - and; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; स (sa) - with; ऋषिगणाः (ṛṣigaṇāḥ) - groups of sages; तथा (tathā) - also; यत्र (yatra) - where; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; समायान्ति (samāyānti) - assemble; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - with the desire for welfare;]
(The king of birds, Garuda, and whom always approaches; the four guardians of the worlds and gods, with groups of sages also; where always assemble with the desire for the welfare of the world.)

विष्णुना यत्र पुत्रार्थे तपस्तप्तं महात्मना। यत्रैव च कुमारेण बाल्ये क्षिप्ता दिवौकसः ॥१२-३१४-७॥
viṣṇunā yatra putrārthe tapastaptaṃ mahātmanā। yatraiva ca kumāreṇa bālye kṣiptā divaukasaḥ ॥12-314-7॥
[विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; यत्र (yatra) - where; पुत्रार्थे (putrārthe) - for the sake of a son; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - was performed; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; यत्रैव (yatraiva) - in that very place; च (ca) - and; कुमारेण (kumāreṇa) - by the boy; बाल्ये (bālye) - in childhood; क्षिप्ता (kṣiptā) - were cast out; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]
(By Viṣṇu, where for the sake of a son austerity was performed by the great-souled one; in that very place and by the boy in childhood the dwellers of heaven were cast out. (12-314-7))
Where Viṣṇu, for the sake of a son, performed austerities as a great soul; and in that very place, the boy in his childhood cast out the dwellers of heaven. (12-314-7)
शक्तिर्न्यस्ता क्षितितले त्रैलोक्यमवमन्य वै। यत्रोवाच जगत्स्कन्दः क्षिपन्वाक्यमिदं तदा ॥१२-३१४-८॥
śaktir-nyastā kṣititale trailokyam-avamanya vai। yatrovāca jagat-skandaḥ kṣipan-vākyam-idaṃ tadā ॥12-314-8॥
[शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) - power; feminine energy; न्यस्ता (nyastā) - laid down; deposited; क्षितितले (kṣititale) - on the surface of the earth; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - the three worlds; अवमन्य (avamanya) - disregarding; despising; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; यत्र (yatra) - where; उवाच (uvāca) - said; जगत् (jagat) - the world; स्कन्दः (skandaḥ) - Skanda; Kartikeya; क्षिपन् (kṣipan) - uttering; casting; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; speech; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time;]
(Power laid down on the surface of the earth, the three worlds disregarding indeed; where said the world Skanda, uttering this word then. (12-314-8))
When the power was laid down on the surface of the earth, disregarding the three worlds indeed, there Skanda, the lord of the world, spoke these words at that time. (12-314-8)
योऽन्योऽस्ति मत्तोऽभ्यधिको विप्रा यस्याधिकं प्रियाः। यो ब्रह्मण्यो द्वितीयोऽस्ति त्रिषु लोकेषु वीर्यवान् ॥१२-३१४-९॥
yo'anyo'sti matto'bhyadhiko viprā yasya'dhikaṃ priyāḥ। yo brahmaṇyo dvitīyo'sti triṣu lokeṣu vīryavān ॥12-314-9॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; अस्ति (asti) - is; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - than me; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - superior; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; यस्यान् (yasya) - whose; अधिकम् (adhikam) - more; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear ones; यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to Brahman; द्वितीयः (dvitīyaḥ) - second; अस्ति (asti) - is; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(Who other is than me superior, Brāhmaṇas, whose more dear ones; who devoted to Brahman second is in three worlds powerful.)
O Brāhmaṇas, if there is any other who is superior to me, whose dear ones are more; who is the second devoted to Brahman, powerful in the three worlds. (12-314-9)
सोऽभ्युद्धरत्विमां शक्तिमथ वा कम्पयत्विति। तच्छ्रुत्वा व्यथिता लोकाः क इमामुद्धरेदिति ॥१२-३१४-१०॥
so'bhyuddharatvimāṃ śaktimatha vā kampayatviti। tacchrutvā vyathitā lokāḥ ka imāmuddharediti ॥12-314-10॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्युद्धरत् (abhyuddharat) - may he lift up; इमां (imām) - this (feminine); शक्तिम् (śaktim) - power; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; कम्पयतु (kampayatu) - may he shake; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; व्यथिताः (vyathitāḥ) - distressed; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; कः (kaḥ) - who; इमाम् (imām) - this (feminine); उद्धरेत् (uddharet) - may lift up; इति (iti) - thus;]
(He may lift up this power, or may he shake (it), thus. Having heard that, the distressed worlds (said), "Who may lift up this?", thus. (12-314-10))
He may lift up this power, or may he shake it, thus. Hearing that, the distressed worlds said, "Who can lift this?" (12-314-10)
अथ देवगणं सर्वं सम्भ्रान्तेन्द्रियमानसम्। अपश्यद्भगवान्विष्णुः क्षिप्तं सासुरराक्षसम् ॥ किं न्वत्र सुकृतं कार्यं भवेदिति विचिन्तयन् ॥१२-३१४-११॥
atha devagaṇaṃ sarvaṃ sambhrāntendriyamānasam। apaśyad bhagavān viṣṇuḥ kṣiptaṃ sāsurarākṣasam ॥ kiṃ nv atra sukṛtaṃ kāryaṃ bhaved iti vicintayan ॥12-314-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; देवगणं (devagaṇam) - the host of gods; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; सम्भ्रान्तेन्द्रियमानसम् (sambhrāntendriyamānasam) - with agitated senses and mind; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; क्षिप्तं (kṣiptam) - disturbed; सासुरराक्षसम् (sāsurarākṣasam) - together with asuras and rākṣasas; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; सुकृतं (sukṛtam) - good deed; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; इति (iti) - thus; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) - pondering;]
(Then the entire host of gods, with agitated senses and mind, the blessed Viṣṇu saw, disturbed together with asuras and rākṣasas. Pondering thus, "What indeed here is the good deed to be done, should it be so?" (12-314-11))
Then the blessed Viṣṇu saw that the entire host of gods, along with the asuras and rākṣasas, were disturbed and their senses and minds were agitated. Pondering, he thought, "What good deed should be done here?" (12-314-11)
स नामृष्यत तं क्षेपमवैक्षत च पावकिम्। स प्रहस्य विशुद्धात्मा शक्तिं प्रज्वलितां तदा ॥ कम्पयामास सव्येन पाणिना पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१२-३१४-१२॥
sa nāmṛṣyata taṃ kṣepamavaikṣata ca pāvakim। sa prahasya viśuddhātmā śaktiṃ prajvalitāṃ tadā ॥ kampayāmāsa savyena pāṇinā puruṣottamaḥ ॥12-314-12॥
[स (sa) - he; न (na) - not; अमृष्यत (amṛṣyata) - endured; तं (taṃ) - that; क्षेपम् (kṣepam) - attack; अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - looked at; च (ca) - and; पावकिम् (pāvakim) - fiery; स (sa) - he; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; विशुद्धात्मा (viśuddhātmā) - pure-souled; शक्तिं (śaktiṃ) - spear; प्रज्वलितां (prajvalitāṃ) - blazing; तदा (tadā) - then; कम्पयामास (kampayāmāsa) - shook; सव्येन (savyena) - with the left; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - by the hand; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the best of men;]
(He did not endure that attack, and looked at the fiery (weapon). He, having smiled, the pure-souled, then shook the blazing spear with his left hand, the best of men.)
He could not tolerate that attack and looked at the fiery weapon. Smiling, the pure-hearted hero then shook the blazing spear with his left hand, the best among men. (12-314-12)
शक्त्यां तु कम्पमानायां विष्णुना बलिना तदा। मेदिनी कम्पिता सर्वा सशैलवनकानना ॥१२-३१४-१३॥
śaktyāṃ tu kampamānāyāṃ viṣṇunā balinā tadā। medinī kampitā sarvā saśailavanakānanā ॥12-314-13॥
[शक्त्यां (śaktyām) - in the energy; तु (tu) - but; कम्पमानायां (kampamānāyām) - when trembling; विष्णुना (viṣṇunā) - by Viṣṇu; बलिना (balinā) - by the powerful one; तदा (tadā) - then; मेदिनी (medinī) - the earth; कम्पिता (kampitā) - was shaken; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; सशैलवनकानना (saśailavanakānanā) - with mountains, forests, and groves;]
(But when the energy was trembling, then the earth, with all her mountains, forests, and groves, was shaken by the powerful Viṣṇu.)
But when the energy trembled, the powerful Viṣṇu shook the entire earth along with her mountains, forests, and groves. (12-314-13)
शक्तेनापि समुद्धर्तुं कम्पिता सा न तूद्धृता। रक्षता स्कन्दराजस्य धर्षणां प्रभविष्णुना ॥१२-३१४-१४॥
śaktenāpi samuddhartuṃ kampitā sā na tūddhṛtā। rakṣatā skandarājasya dharṣaṇāṃ prabhaviṣṇunā ॥12-314-14॥
[शक्तेन (śaktena) - by the powerful one; अपि (api) - even; समुद्धर्तुं (samuddhartuṃ) - to completely lift up; कम्पिता (kampitā) - shaken; सा (sā) - she; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; उद्धृता (uddhṛtā) - lifted up; रक्षता (rakṣatā) - by the protector; स्कन्दराजस्य (skandarājasya) - of Skanda king; धर्षणां (dharṣaṇāṃ) - attack; प्रभविष्णुना (prabhaviṣṇunā) - by the mighty Viṣṇu;]
(Even by the powerful one, to completely lift up (her), shaken she was, but not lifted up. By the protector of Skanda king, the attack (was) by the mighty Viṣṇu. (12-314-14))
Even though she was shaken by the powerful one in an attempt to completely lift her, she was not lifted. The mighty Viṣṇu, protector of Skanda king, repelled the attack. (12-314-14)
तां कम्पयित्वा भगवान्प्रह्रादमिदमब्रवीत्। पश्य वीर्यं कुमारस्य नैतदन्यः करिष्यति ॥१२-३१४-१५॥
tāṃ kampayitvā bhagavān prahrādam idam abravīt। paśya vīryaṃ kumārasya na etad anyaḥ kariṣyati ॥12-314-15॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; कम्पयित्वा (kampayitvā) - having shaken; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; प्रह्रादम् (prahrādam) - to Prahlāda; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पश्य (paśya) - see; वीर्यं (vīryaṃ) - strength; कुमारस्य (kumārasya) - of the boy; न (na) - not; एतत् (etad) - this; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(Having shaken her, the Lord said this to Prahlāda: See the strength of the boy; not another will do this. (12-314-15))
After shaking her, the Lord said to Prahlāda, "See the strength of this boy; no one else will do this." (12-314-15)
सोऽमृष्यमाणस्तद्वाक्यं समुद्धरणनिश्चितः। जग्राह तां तस्य शक्तिं न चैनामप्यकम्पयत् ॥१२-३१४-१६॥
so' mṛṣyamāṇas tad vākyaṃ samuddharaṇa-niścitaḥ। jagrāha tāṃ tasya śaktiṃ na ca enām api akampayat ॥12-314-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अमृष्यमाणः (amṛṣyamāṇaḥ) - not enduring; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; समुद्धरणनिश्चितः (samuddharaṇa-niścitaḥ) - determined for removal; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; ताम् (tāṃ) - her; तस्य (tasya) - his; शक्तिम् (śaktiṃ) - spear; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her (this); अपि (api) - even; अकम्पयत् (akampayat) - shook;]
(He, not enduring that speech, determined for removal, seized her, his spear, and did not even shake her.)
He, unable to tolerate those words and resolved to remove her, seized his spear, but even then did not shake her. (12-314-16)
नादं महान्तं मुक्त्वा स मूर्छितो गिरिमूर्धनि। विह्वलः प्रापतद्भूमौ हिरण्यकशिपोः सुतः ॥१२-३१४-१७॥
nādaṃ mahāntaṃ muktvā sa mūrcchito girimūrdhani। vihvalaḥ prāpatadbhūmau hiraṇyakaśipoḥ sutaḥ ॥12-314-17॥
[नादं (nādam) - sound; महान्तं (mahāntam) - great; मुक्त्वा (muktvā) - having uttered; स (sa) - he; मूर्छितः (mūrcchitaḥ) - fainted; गिरिमूर्धनि (girimūrdhani) - on the mountain-top; विह्वलः (vihvalaḥ) - distressed; प्रापतत् (prāpatat) - fell down; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; हिरण्यकशिपोः (hiraṇyakaśipoḥ) - of Hiraṇyakaśipu; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
(Having uttered a great sound, he fainted on the mountain-top; distressed, the son of Hiraṇyakaśipu fell down on the ground.)
After letting out a great cry, he fainted atop the mountain; overcome with distress, the son of Hiraṇyakaśipu collapsed to the ground. (12-314-17)
यत्रोत्तरां दिशं गत्वा शैलराजस्य पार्श्वतः। तपोऽतप्यत दुर्धर्षस्तात नित्यं वृषध्वजः ॥१२-३१४-१८॥
yatrāttarāṃ diśaṃ gatvā śailarājasya pārśvataḥ। tapo'tapyata durdharṣastāta nityaṃ vṛṣadhvajaḥ ॥12-314-18॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; उत्तरां (uttarāṃ) - northern; दिशं (diśaṃ) - direction; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; शैलराजस्य (śailarājasya) - of the king of mountains; पार्श्वतः (pārśvataḥ) - beside; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; अतप्यत (atapyata) - was practiced; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - the unassailable; तात (tāta) - O dear one; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; वृषध्वजः (vṛṣadhvajaḥ) - the one whose banner is the bull;]
(Where, having gone to the northern direction, beside the king of mountains, austerity was practiced by the unassailable one, O dear one, always, the one whose banner is the bull.)
O dear one, in the northern direction, beside the king of mountains, the unassailable Vṛṣadhvaja (Śiva) always practiced austerity. (12-314-18)
पावकेन परिक्षिप्तो दीप्यता तस्य चाश्रमः। आदित्यबन्धनं नाम दुर्धर्षमकृतात्मभिः ॥१२-३१४-१९॥
pāvakena parikṣipto dīpyatā tasya cāśramaḥ। ādityabandhanaṃ nāma durdharṣam akṛtātmabhiḥ ॥12-314-19॥

न तत्र शक्यते गन्तुं यक्षराक्षसदानवैः। दशयोजनविस्तारमग्निज्वालासमावृतम् ॥१२-३१४-२०॥
na tatra śakyate gantuṃ yakṣa-rākṣasa-dānavaiḥ। daśa-yojana-vistāram agni-jvālā-samāvṛtam ॥12-314-20॥

भगवान्पावकस्तत्र स्वयं तिष्ठति वीर्यवान्। सर्वविघ्नान्प्रशमयन्महादेवस्य धीमतः ॥१२-३१४-२१॥

There, the illustrious Agni himself stands, powerful, removing all obstacles for the wise Mahadeva. (12-314-21)
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं हि पादेनैकेन तिष्ठतः। देवान्सन्तापयंस्तत्र महादेवो धृतव्रतः ॥१२-३१४-२२॥
divyaṃ varṣasahasraṃ hi pādenaikena tiṣṭhataḥ। devānsantāpayaṃstatra mahādevo dhṛtavrataḥ ॥12-314-22॥

(Divine thousand years indeed with one foot standing, the gods tormenting there Mahadeva firm in vow.)
Mahadeva, firm in his vow, stood there on one foot for a thousand divine years, tormenting the gods. (12-314-22)
ऐन्द्रीं तु दिशमास्थाय शैलराजस्य धीमतः। विविक्ते पर्वततटे पाराशर्यो महातपाः ॥ वेदानध्यापयामास व्यासः शिष्यान्महातपाः ॥१२-३१४-२३॥
aindrīṃ tu diśam āsthāya śailarājasya dhīmataḥ। vivikte parvatataṭe pārāśaryo mahātapāḥ ॥ vedān adhyāpayām āsa vyāsaḥ śiṣyān mahātapāḥ ॥12-314-23॥

(By these disciples surrounded, Vyāsa, the great ascetic, sits. There, the holy hermitage place of the excellent father he saw. The son of Araṇi, pure-souled, like the sun in the sky.)
Surrounded by these disciples, the great ascetic Vyāsa sat. There he saw the holy hermitage of his excellent father. The son of Araṇi, pure in soul, shone like the sun in the sky. (12-314-25)
अथ व्यासः परिक्षिप्तं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम्। ददर्श सुतमायान्तं दिवाकरसमप्रभम् ॥१२-३१४-२६॥
atha vyāsaḥ parikṣiptaṃ jvalantam iva pāvakam। dadarśa sutam āyāntam divākara-sama-prabham ॥12-314-26॥

(Then Vyāsa, surrounded, blazing like fire, saw his son coming, equal in splendor to the sun.)
Then Vyāsa, encircled and blazing like fire, saw his son approaching, whose brilliance was equal to that of the sun. (12-314-26)
असज्जमानं वृक्षेषु शैलेषु विषमेषु च। योगयुक्तं महात्मानं यथा बाणं गुणच्युतम् ॥१२-३१४-२७॥
asajjamānaṃ vṛkṣeṣu śaileṣu viṣameṣu ca। yogayuktaṃ mahātmānaṃ yathā bāṇaṃ guṇacyutam ॥12-314-27॥
[असज्जमानं (asajjamānaṃ) - not clinging; वृक्षेषु (vṛkṣeṣu) - on trees; शैलेषु (śaileṣu) - on mountains; विषमेषु (viṣameṣu) - on uneven places; च (ca) - and; योगयुक्तं (yogayuktaṃ) - engaged in yoga; महात्मानं (mahātmānaṃ) - great-souled one; यथा (yathā) - just as; बाणं (bāṇaṃ) - arrow; गुणच्युतम् (guṇacyutam) - released from the bowstring;]
(Not clinging on trees, on mountains, on uneven places and engaged in yoga, the great-souled one, just as an arrow released from the bowstring.)
Just as an arrow released from the bowstring does not cling to trees, mountains, or uneven places, so too the great-souled one engaged in yoga remains unattached. (12-314-27)
सोऽभिगम्य पितुः पादावगृह्णादरणीसुतः। यथोपजोषं तैश्चापि समागच्छन्महामुनिः ॥१२-३१४-२८॥
so'bhigamya pituḥ pādāv agṛhṇād araṇīsutaḥ। yathopajoṣaṃ taiś cāpi samāgacchan mahāmuniḥ ॥12-314-28॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; पितुः (pituḥ) - of the father; पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); अगृह्णात् (agṛhṇāt) - he grasped; अरणीसुतः (araṇīsutaḥ) - son of Araṇi (Agni); यथा (yathā) - as; उपजोषं (upajoṣam) - with affection; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; समागच्छन् (samāgacchan) - coming together; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage;]
(He, having approached, of the father, feet (dual), he grasped, son of Araṇi; as, with affection, with them, and, also, coming together, the great sage. (12-314-28))
The son of Araṇi, having approached, grasped his father's feet; then, with affection, the great sage joined with them as well. (12-314-28)
ततो निवेदयामास पित्रे सर्वमशेषतः। शुको जनकराजेन संवादं प्रीतमानसः ॥१२-३१४-२९॥
tato nivedayāmāsa pitre sarvamaśeṣataḥ। śuko janakarājena saṃvādaṃ prītamānasaḥ ॥12-314-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; निवेदयामास (nivedayāmāsa) - reported; informed; पित्रे (pitre) - to the father; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - without remainder; completely; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; (the sage Śuka); जनकराजेन (janakarājena) - by King Janaka; संवादम् (saṃvādam) - conversation; dialogue; प्रीतमनसः (prītamānasaḥ) - with delighted mind; pleased in mind;]
(Then Śuka, with delighted mind, reported everything completely to his father: the conversation with King Janaka.)
Then Śuka, his mind delighted, informed his father of the entire conversation he had with King Janaka, leaving nothing out. (12-314-29)
एवमध्यापयञ्शिष्यान्व्यासः पुत्रं च वीर्यवान्। उवास हिमवत्पृष्ठे पाराशर्यो महामुनिः ॥१२-३१४-३०॥
evam adhyāpayañ śiṣyān vyāsaḥ putraṃ ca vīryavān। uvāsa himavatpṛṣṭhe pārāśaryo mahāmuniḥ ॥12-314-30॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; अध्यापयन् (adhyāpayan) - teaching; instructing; शिष्यान् (śiṣyān) - disciples; students; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; (the sage Vyāsa;) पुत्रम् (putram) - son; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; possessing strength; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; resided; हिमवत्पृष्ठे (himavatpṛṣṭhe) - on the slopes of the Himavat (Himalaya); पाराशर्यः (pārāśaryaḥ) - son of Parāśara; (epithet of Vyāsa;) महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage;]
(Thus, teaching the disciples, Vyāsa, and his son, powerful, dwelt on the slopes of the Himavat, the son of Parāśara, the great sage.)
Thus, the powerful Vyāsa, son of Parāśara and great sage, taught his disciples and his son while residing on the slopes of the Himalayas. (12-314-30)
ततः कदाचिच्छिष्यास्तं परिवार्यावतस्थिरे। वेदाध्ययनसम्पन्नाः शान्तात्मानो जितेन्द्रियाः ॥१२-३१४-३१॥
tataḥ kadācicchiṣyās taṃ parivāryāvatasthire। vedādhyayana-sampannāḥ śāntātmāno jitendriyāḥ ॥12-314-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; once; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; students; तम् (tam) - him; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; encircling; अवतस्थिरे (avatasthire) - stood; remained; वेदाध्ययनसम्पन्नाः (vedādhyayana-sampannāḥ) - endowed with Vedic study; accomplished in Vedic learning; शान्तात्मानः (śāntātmānaḥ) - of peaceful mind; tranquil-minded; जितेन्द्रियाः (jitendriyāḥ) - having conquered the senses; self-controlled;]
(Then at some time the disciples, having surrounded him, stood (there); endowed with Vedic study, tranquil-minded, self-controlled.)
Then, once, the disciples, accomplished in Vedic study, peaceful in mind and self-controlled, gathered around him and stood. (12-314-31)
वेदेषु निष्ठां सम्प्राप्य साङ्गेष्वतितपस्विनः। अथोचुस्ते तदा व्यासं शिष्याः प्राञ्जलयो गुरुम् ॥१२-३१४-३२॥
vedeṣu niṣṭhāṃ samprāpya sāṅgeṣv atitapasvinaḥ। athocus te tadā vyāsaṃ śiṣyāḥ prāñjalayo gurum ॥12-314-32॥
[वेदेषु (vedeṣu) - in the Vedas; निष्ठां (niṣṭhām) - steadfastness; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having attained; साङ्गेषु (sāṅgeṣu) - in the limbs (auxiliaries); अतितपस्विनः (atitapasvinaḥ) - those of great austerity; अथ (atha) - then; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; ते (te) - they; तदा (tadā) - at that time; व्यासं (vyāsam) - Vyāsa; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with folded hands; गुरुम् (gurum) - the teacher;]
(In the Vedas steadfastness having attained, in the auxiliaries, those of great austerity, then said they at that time to Vyāsa, the disciples with folded hands, the teacher.)
Having attained steadfastness in the Vedas and their auxiliaries, those disciples of great austerity then, with folded hands, spoke to their teacher Vyāsa. (12-314-32)
महता श्रेयसा युक्ता यशसा च स्म वर्धिताः। एकं त्विदानीमिच्छामो गुरुणानुग्रहं कृतम् ॥१२-३१४-३३॥
mahatā śreyasā yuktā yaśasā ca sma vardhitāḥ। ekaṃ tvidānīmicchāmo guruṇānugrahaṃ kṛtam ॥12-314-33॥
[महता (mahatā) - by greatness; श्रेयसा (śreyasā) - by excellence; युक्ता (yuktā) - endowed; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; च (ca) - and; स्म (sma) - indeed; वर्धिताः (vardhitāḥ) - increased; एकं (ekaṃ) - one; तु (tu) - but; इदानीम् (idānīm) - now; इच्छामः (icchāmaḥ) - we desire; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favor; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(By greatness, by excellence, endowed, by fame and indeed increased. One but now we desire the favor done by the teacher.)
Endowed with great excellence and fame, we have indeed grown. But now, we desire one thing: the favor bestowed by the teacher. (12-314-33)
इति तेषां वचः श्रुत्वा ब्रह्मर्षिस्तानुवाच ह। उच्यतामिति तद्वत्सा यद्वः कार्यं प्रियं मया ॥१२-३१४-३४॥
iti teṣāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā brahmarṣīs tān uvāca ha। ucyatām iti tad vatsā yad vaḥ kāryaṃ priyaṃ mayā ॥12-314-34॥
[इति (iti) - thus; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ब्रह्मर्षीन् (brahmarṣīn) - the Brahmarṣis; तान् (tān) - them; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; उच्यताम् (ucyatām) - let it be said; इति (iti) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; वत्सा (vatsā) - O dear ones; यत् (yat) - what; वः (vaḥ) - your; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Thus, having heard their speech, he indeed said to those Brahmarṣis: "Let it be said, O dear ones, what is your task dear to me." (12-314-34))
Having heard their words, he addressed those Brahmarṣis and said: "O dear ones, let it be told what task of yours is dear to me." (12-314-34)
एतद्वाक्यं गुरोः श्रुत्वा शिष्यास्ते हृष्टमानसाः। पुनः प्राञ्जलयो भूत्वा प्रणम्य शिरसा गुरुम् ॥१२-३१४-३५॥
etadvākyaṃ guroḥ śrutvā śiṣyāste hṛṣṭamānasāḥ। punaḥ prāñjalayo bhūtvā praṇamya śirasā gurum ॥12-314-35॥
[एतद् (etad) - this; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - speech; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; ते (te) - they; हृष्ट (hṛṣṭa) - gladdened; मानसाः (mānasāḥ) - in mind; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्राञ्जलयः (prāñjalayaḥ) - with folded hands; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; गुरुम् (gurum) - to the teacher;]
(This speech of the teacher having heard, the disciples they gladdened in mind; again with folded hands having become, having bowed with the head to the teacher.)
Having heard this speech of the teacher, the disciples, their minds gladdened, again became reverent with folded hands and bowed their heads to the teacher. (12-314-35)
ऊचुस्ते सहिता राजन्निदं वचनमुत्तमम्। यदि प्रीत उपाध्यायो धन्याः स्मो मुनिसत्तम ॥१२-३१४-३६॥
ūcus te sahitā rājan idaṃ vacanam uttamam। yadi prīta upādhyāyo dhanyāḥ smo munisattama ॥12-314-36॥
[ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; ते (te) - they; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; यदि (yadi) - if; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; उपाध्यायः (upādhyāyaḥ) - preceptor; धन्याः (dhanyāḥ) - blessed; स्मः (smaḥ) - we are; मुनिसत्तम (munisattama) - O best of sages;]
(They said together, O king, this excellent speech. If the preceptor is pleased, we are blessed, O best of sages.)
They all said together to the king this excellent statement: "If the preceptor is pleased, we are blessed, O best of sages." (12-314-36)
काङ्क्षामस्तु वयं सर्वे वरं दत्तं महर्षिणा। षष्ठः शिष्यो न ते ख्यातिं गच्छेदत्र प्रसीद नः ॥१२-३१४-३७॥
kāṅkṣāmas tu vayaṃ sarve varaṃ dattaṃ maharṣiṇā। ṣaṣṭhaḥ śiṣyo na te khyātiṃ gacched atra prasīda naḥ ॥12-314-37॥
[काङ्क्षामः (kāṅkṣāmaḥ) - we desire; तु (tu) - but; वयम् (vayam) - we; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वरम् (varam) - boon; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; महर्षिणा (maharṣiṇā) - by the great sage; षष्ठः (ṣaṣṭhaḥ) - the sixth; शिष्यः (śiṣyaḥ) - disciple; न (na) - not; ते (te) - your; ख्यातिम् (khyātim) - fame; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should attain; अत्र (atra) - here; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; नः (naḥ) - to us;]
(We desire but we all the boon given by the great sage; the sixth disciple should not attain your fame here; be gracious to us.)
We all desire the boon given by the great sage; let the sixth disciple not attain your fame here; please be gracious to us. (12-314-37)
चत्वारस्ते वयं शिष्या गुरुपुत्रश्च पञ्चमः। इह वेदाः प्रतिष्ठेरन्नेष नः काङ्क्षितो वरः ॥१२-३१४-३८॥
catvāras te vayaṃ śiṣyā guruputraś ca pañcamaḥ। iha vedāḥ pratiṣṭheran eṣa naḥ kāṅkṣito varaḥ ॥12-314-38॥
[चत्वारः (catvāraḥ) - four; ते (te) - your; वयम् (vayam) - we; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; गुरुपुत्रः (guruputraḥ) - son of the teacher; च (ca) - and; पञ्चमः (pañcamaḥ) - fifth; इह (iha) - here; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; प्रतिष्ठेरन् (pratiṣṭheran) - may be established; एष (eṣa) - this; नः (naḥ) - our; काङ्क्षितः (kāṅkṣitaḥ) - desired; वरः (varaḥ) - boon;]
(Four your we disciples, the teacher's son and fifth; here the Vedas may be established, this our desired boon.)
We are your four disciples, and the teacher's son is the fifth; may the Vedas be established here—this is the boon we desire. (12-314-38)
शिष्याणां वचनं श्रुत्वा व्यासो वेदार्थतत्त्ववित्। पराशरात्मजो धीमान्परलोकार्थचिन्तकः ॥ उवाच शिष्यान्धर्मात्मा धर्म्यं नैःश्रेयसं वचः ॥१२-३१४-३९॥
śiṣyāṇāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā vyāso vedārthatattvavit। parāśarātmajo dhīmān paralokārthacintakaḥ ॥ uvāca śiṣyān dharmātmā dharmyaṃ naiḥśreyasaṃ vacaḥ ॥12-314-39॥
[शिष्याणां (śiṣyāṇām) - of the disciples; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; वेदार्थतत्त्ववित् (vedārthatattvavit) - knower of the essence of the meaning of the Veda; पराशरात्मजः (parāśarātmajaḥ) - son of Parāśara; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; परलोकार्थचिन्तकः (paralokārthacintakaḥ) - one who contemplates the purpose of the other world; उवाच (uvāca) - said; शिष्यान् (śiṣyān) - to the disciples; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; धर्म्यम् (dharmyam) - righteous; नैःश्रेयसं (naiḥśreyasam) - leading to the highest good; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Having heard the speech of the disciples, Vyāsa, knower of the essence of the meaning of the Veda, son of Parāśara, wise, one who contemplates the purpose of the other world, said to the disciples, the righteous-souled, righteous, leading to the highest good speech. (12-314-39))
Having listened to the words of his disciples, Vyāsa, the wise son of Parāśara, knower of the essence of the Vedas and one who contemplates the purpose of the next world, spoke to his disciples a righteous and supremely beneficial discourse. (12-314-39)
ब्राह्मणाय सदा देयं ब्रह्म शुश्रूषवे भवेत्। ब्रह्मलोके निवासं यो ध्रुवं समभिकाङ्क्षति ॥१२-३१४-४०॥
brāhmaṇāya sadā deyaṃ brahma śuśrūṣave bhavet. brahmaloke nivāsaṃ yo dhruvaṃ samabhikāṅkṣati ॥12-314-40॥
[ब्राह्मणाय (brāhmaṇāya) - to the brāhmaṇa; सदा (sadā) - always; देयं (deyaṃ) - should be given; ब्रह्म (brahma) - the Veda; शुश्रूषवे (śuśrūṣave) - for the one desiring to serve; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; ब्रह्मलोके (brahmaloke) - in the world of Brahma; निवासं (nivāsaṃ) - residence; यः (yaḥ) - who; ध्रुवं (dhruvaṃ) - permanent; समभिकाङ्क्षति (samabhikāṅkṣati) - earnestly desires;]
(To the brāhmaṇa always should be given the Veda for the one desiring to serve; in the world of Brahma, residence who permanent earnestly desires.)
The Veda should always be given to the brāhmaṇa who desires to serve it; for whoever earnestly desires a permanent residence in the world of Brahma. (12-314-40)
भवन्तो बहुलाः सन्तु वेदो विस्तार्यतामयम्। नाशिष्ये सम्प्रदातव्यो नाव्रते नाकृतात्मनि ॥१२-३१४-४१॥
bhavanto bahulāḥ santu vedo vistāryatāmayam। nāśiṣye sampradātavyo nāvrate nākṛtātmani ॥12-314-41॥
[भवन्तः (bhavantaḥ) - you all; बहुलाः (bahulāḥ) - numerous; सन्तु (santu) - may be; वेदः (vedaḥ) - Veda; विस्तार्यताम् (vistāryatām) - may be expanded; अयम् (ayam) - this; न (na) - not; आशिष्ये (āśiṣye) - to one not a student; सम्प्रदातव्यः (sampradātavyaḥ) - should be imparted; न (na) - not; अव्रते (avrate) - to one without vows; न (na) - not; अकृतात्मनि (akṛtātmani) - to one undisciplined in self;]
(You all numerous may be, the Veda may be expanded, this; not to one not a student should be imparted, not to one without vows, not to one undisciplined in self. (12-314-41))
Let you all be numerous, let this Veda be expanded; but it should not be imparted to one who is not a student, nor to one without vows, nor to one who is undisciplined in self. (12-314-41)
एते शिष्यगुणाः सर्वे विज्ञातव्या यथार्थतः। नापरीक्षितचारित्रे विद्या देया कथञ्चन ॥१२-३१४-४२॥
ete śiṣyaguṇāḥ sarve vijñātavyā yathārthataḥ। nāparīkṣitacāritre vidyā deyā kathaṃcana ॥12-314-42॥
[एते (ete) - these; शिष्यगुणाः (śiṣyaguṇāḥ) - student-qualities; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विज्ञातव्या (vijñātavyā) - to be known; यथार्थतः (yathārthataḥ) - truly; न (na) - not; अपरीक्षितचारित्रे (aparīkṣitacāritre) - with unexamined character; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; देया (deyā) - should be given; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(These student-qualities all to be known truly. Not to one with unexamined character knowledge should be given in any way.)
All these qualities of a student should be truly understood. Knowledge should never be imparted in any way to one whose character has not been examined. (12-314-42)
यथा हि कनकं शुद्धं तापच्छेदनिघर्षणैः। परीक्षेत तथा शिष्यानीक्षेत्कुलगुणादिभिः ॥१२-३१४-४३॥
yathā hi kanakaṃ śuddhaṃ tāpacchedanigharṣaṇaiḥ। parīkṣeta tathā śiṣyānīkṣetkulaguṇādibhiḥ ॥12-314-43॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; कनकं (kanakaṃ) - gold; शुद्धं (śuddham) - pure; ताप-च्छेद-निघर्षणैः (tāpa-ccheda-nigharṣaṇaiḥ) - by heating, cutting, and rubbing; परीक्षेत (parīkṣeta) - should be tested; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; ईक्षेत् (īkṣet) - should be observed; कुल-गुण-आदिभिः (kula-guṇa-ādibhiḥ) - by family, qualities, and so on;]
(Just as indeed gold pure by heating, cutting, and rubbing should be tested, in the same way disciples should be observed by family, qualities, and so on.)
Just as pure gold is tested by heating, cutting, and rubbing, so too should disciples be examined by their family, qualities, and other such factors. (12-314-43)
न नियोज्याश्च वः शिष्या अनियोगे महाभये। यथामति यथापाठं तथा विद्या फलिष्यति ॥१२-३१४-४४॥
na niyojyāś ca vaḥ śiṣyā aniyoge mahābhaye। yathāmati yathāpāṭhaṃ tathā vidyā phaliṣyati ॥12-314-44॥
[न (na) - not; नियोज्याः (niyojyāḥ) - to be engaged; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - your; शिष्याः (śiṣyāḥ) - disciples; अनियोगे (aniyoge) - in absence of engagement; महाभये (mahābhaye) - in great danger; यथा (yathā) - as; मति (mati) - intellect; यथा (yathā) - as; पाठं (pāṭhaṃ) - recitation; तथा (tathā) - so; विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; फलिष्यति (phaliṣyati) - will bear fruit;]
(Not to be engaged and your disciples in absence of engagement, in great danger. As intellect, as recitation, so knowledge will bear fruit. (12-314-44))
Your disciples should not be engaged when there is no engagement or in great danger. Knowledge will bear fruit according to one's intellect and recitation. (12-314-44)
सर्वस्तरतु दुर्गाणि सर्वो भद्राणि पश्यतु। श्रावयेच्चतुरो वर्णान्कृत्वा ब्राह्मणमग्रतः ॥१२-३१४-४५॥
sarvastaratu durgāṇi sarvo bhadrāṇi paśyatu। śrāvayeccaturo varṇānkṛtvā brāhmaṇamagrataḥ ॥12-314-45॥
[सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; तरतु (taratu) - may cross; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficulties; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; भद्राणि (bhadrāṇi) - auspicious things; पश्यतु (paśyatu) - may see; श्रावयेत् (śrāvayet) - should cause to be heard; च (ca) - and; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - the four; वर्णान् (varṇān) - castes; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the brāhmaṇa; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front;]
(Everyone may cross difficulties, everyone may see auspicious things. And having made the four castes hear, placing the brāhmaṇa in front. (12-314-45))
May everyone overcome difficulties, may everyone see auspicious things. Let the four castes be made to hear, with the brāhmaṇa placed at the front. (12-314-45)
वेदस्याध्ययनं हीदं तच्च कार्यं महत्स्मृतम्। स्तुत्यर्थमिह देवानां वेदाः सृष्टाः स्वयम्भुवा ॥१२-३१४-४६॥
vedasyādhyayanaṃ hīdaṃ tacca kāryaṃ mahatsmṛtam। stutyarthamiha devānāṃ vedāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ svayambhuvā ॥12-314-46॥
[वेदस्य (vedasya) - of the Veda; अध्ययनं (adhyayanaṃ) - study; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - to be done; महत् (mahat) - great; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is remembered; स्तुत्यर्थम् (stutyartham) - for the purpose of praise; इह (iha) - here; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - the Vedas; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - were created; स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by the self-born;]
(Of the Veda, study indeed this and that also to be done great is remembered; for the purpose of praise here of the gods the Vedas were created by the self-born.)
The study of the Veda, indeed, this and that also, is considered a great duty; for the purpose of praising the gods here, the Vedas were created by the self-born. (12-314-46)
यो निर्वदेत संमोहाद्ब्राह्मणं वेदपारगम्। सोऽपध्यानाद्ब्राह्मणस्य पराभूयादसंशयम् ॥१२-३१४-४७॥
yo nirvadeta saṁmohād brāhmaṇaṁ vedapāragam। so'padhyānād brāhmaṇasya parābhūyād asaṁśayam ॥12-314-47॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; निर्वदेत् (nirvadet) - should blame; संमोहात् (saṁmohāt) - from delusion; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - a brāhmaṇa; वेदपारगम् (vedapāragam) - one who has mastered the Vedas; सः (saḥ) - he; अपध्यानात् (apadhyānāt) - from wrong meditation; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; पराभूयात् (parābhūyāt) - should be defeated; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt;]
(Who should blame from delusion a brāhmaṇa who has mastered the Vedas, he from wrong meditation of the brāhmaṇa should be defeated, without doubt. (12-314-47))
Whoever, out of delusion, blames a brāhmaṇa who has mastered the Vedas, he will certainly be defeated due to the brāhmaṇa's wrong meditation, without doubt. (12-314-47)
यश्चाधर्मेण विब्रूयाद्यश्चाधर्मेण पृच्छति। तयोरन्यतरः प्रैति विद्वेषं वाधिगच्छति ॥१२-३१४-४८॥
yaś cā-dharmeṇa vibrūyād yaś cā-dharmeṇa pṛcchati। tayor anyataraḥ praīti vidveṣaṃ vā adhigacchati ॥12-314-48॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; विब्रूयात् (vibrūyāt) - might declare; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; पृच्छति (pṛcchati) - asks; तयोः (tayor) - of those two; अन्यतरः (anyataraḥ) - either one; प्रैति (praīti) - goes; विद्वेषम् (vidveṣam) - enmity; वा (vā) - or; अधिगच्छति (adhigacchati) - attains;]
(Who and by unrighteousness might declare, who and by unrighteousness asks; of those two, either one goes to enmity or attains enmity. (12-314-48))
Whoever declares by unrighteousness, and whoever asks by unrighteousness—of those two, either one goes to or attains enmity. (12-314-48)
एतद्वः सर्वमाख्यातं स्वाध्यायस्य विधिं प्रति। उपकुर्याच्च शिष्याणामेतच्च हृदि वो भवेत् ॥१२-३१४-४९॥
etad vaḥ sarvam ākhyātaṃ svādhyāyasya vidhiṃ prati। upakuryāc ca śiṣyāṇām etac ca hṛdi vo bhavet ॥12-314-49॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; वः (vaḥ) - to you (plural); सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; स्वाध्यायस्य (svādhyāyasya) - of self-study; विधिं (vidhim) - procedure; rule; प्रति (prati) - regarding; towards; उपकुर्यात् (upakuryāt) - should benefit; should assist; च (ca) - and; शिष्याणाम् (śiṣyāṇām) - of students; एतत् (etat) - this; च (ca) - and; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; वः (vo) - of you (plural); भवेत् (bhavet) - should be;]
(This to you all has been told regarding the procedure of self-study; and it should benefit the students, and this should be in the heart of you.)
