The splendid Lord said:
सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ शश्वत्केशैर्मे अंशुसञ्ज्ञितैः। बोधयंस्तापयंश्चैव जगदुत्तिष्ठतः पृथक् ॥३-३३०-१॥
sūryācandramasau śaśvatkeśairme aṃśusañjñitaiḥ। bodhayaṃstāpayaṃścaiva jagaduttiṣṭhataḥ pṛthak ॥3-330-1॥
[सूर्य (sūrya) - sun; चन्द्रमसौ (candramasau) - and moon; शश्वत् (śaśvat) - eternal; केशैः (keśaiḥ) - by hairs; मे (me) - my; अंशु-सञ्ज्ञितैः (aṃśu-sañjñitaiḥ) - called rays; बोधयन् (bodhayan) - awakening; तापयन् (tāpayan) - heating; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जगत् (jagat) - the world; उत्तिष्ठतः (uttiṣṭhataḥ) - rising; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately;]
(The sun and moon, by my eternal hairs called rays, awakening and heating indeed the world, rise separately.)
The sun and the moon, with my eternal hairs known as rays, awaken and heat the world as they rise separately. (3-330-1)
बोधनात्तापनाच्चैव जगतो हर्षणं भवेत्। अग्नीषोमकृतैरेभिः कर्मभिः पाण्डुनन्दन ॥ हृषीकेशोऽहमीशानो वरदो लोकभावनः ॥३-३३०-२॥
bodhanāttāpanāccaiva jagato harṣaṇaṃ bhavet। agnīṣomakṛtairebhiḥ karmabhiḥ pāṇḍunandana ॥ hṛṣīkeśo'hamīśāno varado lokabhāvanaḥ ॥3-330-2॥
[बोधनात् (bodhanāt) - from awakening; तापनात् (tāpanāt) - from heating; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; हर्षणं (harṣaṇam) - delight; भवेत् (bhavet) - arises; अग्नीषोमकृतैः (agnīṣomakṛtaiḥ) - by those performed for Agni and Soma; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O delight of the Pāṇḍus; हृषीकेशः (hṛṣīkeśaḥ) - Hṛṣīkeśa; अहम् (aham) - I; ईशानः (īśānaḥ) - the lord; वरदः (varadaḥ) - the bestower of boons; लोकभावनः (lokabhāvanaḥ) - the creator of the worlds;]
(From awakening and from heating indeed, delight of the world arises. By these actions performed for Agni and Soma, O delight of the Pāṇḍus, I, Hṛṣīkeśa, the lord, the bestower of boons, the creator of the worlds.)
From awakening and heating, the world attains delight. By these actions performed for Agni and Soma, O delight of the Pāṇḍus, I, Hṛṣīkeśa, am the lord, the bestower of boons, and the creator of the worlds. (3-330-2)
इडोपहूतयोगेन हरे भागं क्रतुष्वहम्। वर्णश्च मे हरिश्रेष्ठस्तस्माद्धरिरहं स्मृतः ॥३-३३०-३॥
iḍopahūtayogena hare bhāgaṃ kratuṣvaham। varṇaśca me hariśreṣṭhastasmāddharirahaṃ smṛtaḥ ॥3-330-3॥
[इडोपहूतयोगेन (iḍopahūtayogena) - by the union (yoga) of being invoked (upahūta) by Iḍā (the sacrificial goddess); हरे (hare) - O Hari (Viṣṇu); भागं (bhāgam) - portion; क्रतुषु (kratuṣu) - in sacrifices; अहम् (aham) - I; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - the color/form; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; हरिश्रेष्ठ (hariśreṣṭha) - O best of Hari; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; अहम् (aham) - I; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - am remembered;]
(By the union of being invoked by Iḍā, O Hari, I am the portion in sacrifices; and my color, O best of Hari, therefore I am remembered as Hari.)
O Hari, by being invoked by Iḍā, I am the portion in sacrifices; and my color, O best of Hari, therefore I am known as Hari. (3-330-3)
धाम सारो हि लोकानामृतं चैव विचारितम्। ऋतधामा ततो विप्रैः सत्यश्चाहं प्रकीर्तितः ॥३-३३०-४॥
dhāma sāro hi lokānāmṛtaṃ caiva vicāritam। ṛtadhāmā tato vipraiḥ satyaścāhaṃ prakīrtitaḥ ॥3-330-4॥
[धाम (dhāma) - abode; place; सारः (sāraḥ) - essence; core; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; ऋतम् (ṛtam) - truth; order; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; indeed; विचारितम् (vicāritam) - considered; examined; ऋतधामा (ṛtadhāmā) - whose abode is truth; one whose place is order; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; from that; विप्रैः (vipraiḥ) - by the sages; by the wise; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truth; true; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रकीर्तितः (prakīrtitaḥ) - proclaimed; declared;]
(Abode essence indeed of the worlds, truth and certainly considered; whose abode is truth, therefore by the sages, truth and I proclaimed.)
The essence of the abodes of the worlds is indeed truth, and this has certainly been considered; therefore, I, whose abode is truth, am proclaimed as truth by the sages. (3-330-4)
नष्टां च धरणीं पूर्वमविन्दं वै गुहागताम्। गोविन्द इति मां देवा वाग्भिः समभितुष्टुवुः ॥३-३३०-५॥
naṣṭāṃ ca dharaṇīṃ pūrvam avindaṃ vai guhāgatām। govinda iti māṃ devā vāgbhiḥ samabhituṣṭuvuḥ ॥3-330-5॥
[नष्टाम् (naṣṭām) - lost; च (ca) - and; धरणीम् (dharaṇīm) - earth; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; अविन्दम् (avindam) - I found; वै (vai) - indeed; गुहागताम् (guhāgatām) - gone to the cave; गोविन्द (govinda) - Govinda; इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - me; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; समभितुष्टुवुः (samabhituṣṭuvuḥ) - praised all around;]
(The lost earth and formerly I found indeed gone to the cave; Govinda thus me gods with words praised all around.)
I found the lost earth, which had formerly gone into the cave; therefore, the gods praised me with words as "Govinda". (3-330-5)
शिपिविष्टेति चाख्यायां हीनरोमा च यो भवेत्। तेनाविष्टं हि यत्किञ्चिच्छिपिविष्टं हि तत्स्मृतम् ॥३-३३०-६॥
śipiviṣṭeti cākhyāyāṃ hīnaromā ca yo bhavet। tenāviṣṭaṃ hi yatkiñcicchipiviṣṭaṃ hi tatsmṛtam ॥3-330-6॥
[शिपिविष्टेति (śipiviṣṭeti) - as 'śipiviṣṭa'; च (ca) - and; आख्यायां (ākhyāyām) - in the designation; हीनरोमा (hīnaromā) - one with scanty hair; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; तेन (tena) - by him; आविष्टं (āviṣṭaṃ) - possessed; हि (hi) - indeed; यत्किञ्चित् (yatkiñcit) - whatever; शिपिविष्टं (śipiviṣṭaṃ) - śipiviṣṭa; हि (hi) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is called;]
(As 'śipiviṣṭa', and in the designation, one with scanty hair and who may be; by him, whatever is possessed, that is indeed called 'śipiviṣṭa'.)
Whoever is designated as 'śipiviṣṭa' and has scanty hair, whatever is possessed by him is indeed called 'śipiviṣṭa'. (3-330-6)
यास्को मामृषिरव्यग्रो नैकयज्ञेषु गीतवान्। शिपिविष्ट इति ह्यस्माद्गुह्यनामधरो ह्यहम् ॥३-३३०-७॥
yāsko mām ṛṣir avyagro naika-yajñeṣu gītavān। śipiviṣṭa iti hy asmād guhya-nāma-dharo hy aham ॥3-330-7॥
[यास्कः (yāskaḥ) - Yāska; (name of a sage); माम् (mām) - me; (accusative singular of aham); ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; seer; अव्यग्रः (avyagraḥ) - undisturbed; unagitated; नैकयज्ञेषु (naika-yajñeṣu) - in many sacrifices; (na-eka-yajña, plural locative); गीतवान् (gītavān) - has sung; (past participle of gā, to sing); शिपिविष्ट (śipiviṣṭa) - Śipiviṣṭa; (a secret name of Agni or Viṣṇu); इति (iti) - thus; so; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this; (ablative of asmad); गुह्यनामधरः (guhya-nāma-dharaḥ) - bearer of the secret name; (guhya = secret, nāma = name, dharaḥ = bearer); हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अहम् (aham) - I; (nominative singular);]
(Yāska, me, sage, undisturbed, in many sacrifices, has sung. Śipiviṣṭa, thus, indeed, from this, bearer of the secret name, indeed, I.)
Yāska, the sage, undisturbed, has sung about me in many sacrifices. From this, I am indeed the bearer of the secret name "Śipiviṣṭa". (3-330-7)
स्तुत्वा मां शिपिविष्टेति यास्को ऋषिरुदारधीः। मत्प्रसादादधो नष्टं निरुक्तमभिजग्मिवान् ॥३-३३०-८॥
stutvā māṃ śipiviṣṭeti yāsko ṛṣirudāradhīḥ। matprasādādadho naṣṭaṃ niruktamabhijagmivān ॥3-330-8॥
[स्तुत्वा (stutvā) - having praised; मां (māṃ) - me; शिपिविष्टेति (śipiviṣṭeti) - as 'Śipiviṣṭa'; यास्कः (yāskaḥ) - Yāska; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - of noble intellect; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my grace; अधः (adhaḥ) - down; नष्टम् (naṣṭam) - lost; निरुक्तम् (niruktam) - Nirukta (etymological treatise); अभिजग्मिवान् (abhijagmivān) - recovered; ॥३-३३०-८॥ (॥3-330-8॥) - ;]
(Having praised me as 'Śipiviṣṭa', Yāska, the sage of noble intellect, by my grace, recovered the lost Nirukta from below.)
After praising me as 'Śipiviṣṭa', the sage Yāska, endowed with noble intellect, by my grace, recovered the lost Nirukta from the depths. (3-330-8)
न हि जातो न जायेऽहं न जनिष्ये कदाचन। क्षेत्रज्ञः सर्वभूतानां तस्मादहमजः स्मृतः ॥३-३३०-९॥
na hi jāto na jāye'ham na janiṣye kadācana। kṣetrajñaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tasmād aham ajaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥3-330-9॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; न (na) - not; जाये (jāye) - am born; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; जनिष्ये (janiṣye) - will be born; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; क्षेत्रज्ञः (kṣetrajñaḥ) - knower of the field; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अहम् (aham) - I; अजः (ajaḥ) - unborn; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered;]
(Not indeed born, not am I born, not will I be born at any time. The knower of the field of all beings, therefore I am remembered as unborn.)
I am not born, nor do I come into being, nor will I ever be born at any time. As the knower of the field in all beings, therefore I am known as the unborn one. (3-330-9)
नोक्तपूर्वं मया क्षुद्रमश्लीलं वा कदाचन। ऋता ब्रह्मसुता सा मे सत्या देवी सरस्वती ॥३-३३०-१०॥
noktapūrvaṃ mayā kṣudramaślīlaṃ vā kadācana। ṛtā brahmasutā sā me satyā devī sarasvatī ॥3-330-10॥
[नोक्तपूर्वं (noktapūrvaṃ) - not-said-before; मया (mayā) - by me; क्षुद्रम् (kṣudram) - small; अश्लीलं (aślīlaṃ) - indecent; वा (vā) - or; कदाचन (kadācana) - ever; ऋता (ṛtā) - truthful; ब्रह्मसुता (brahmasutā) - daughter of Brahmā; सा (sā) - she; मे (me) - to me; सत्या (satyā) - truthful; देवी (devī) - goddess; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvatī;]
(Not-said-before by me small indecent or ever. Truthful daughter of Brahmā she to me truthful goddess Sarasvatī.)
I have never before spoken anything small or indecent. The truthful daughter of Brahmā, Sarasvatī, is my truthful goddess. (3-330-10)
सच्चासच्चैव कौन्तेय मयावेशितमात्मनि। पौष्करे ब्रह्मसदने सत्यं मामृषयो विदुः ॥३-३३०-११॥
saccāsaccai̇va kaunteya mayāveśitamātmani। pauṣkare brahmasadane satyaṃ māmṛṣayo viduḥ ॥3-330-11॥
[सत् (sat) - real; च (ca) - and; असत् (asat) - unreal; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; मया (mayā) - by me; आवेशितम् (āveśitam) - entered; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in the self; पौष्करे (pauṣkare) - in Puṣkara; ब्रह्मसदने (brahmasadane) - in the abode of Brahman; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; माम् (mām) - me; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; विदुः (viduḥ) - knew;]
(The real and the unreal indeed, O son of Kunti, by me entered in the self; in Puṣkara, in the abode of Brahman, the sages knew me as truth.)
O son of Kunti, both the real and the unreal have been entered by me into the self; in Puṣkara, in the abode of Brahman, the sages have known me as the truth. (3-330-11)
सत्त्वान्न च्युतपूर्वोऽहं सत्त्वं वै विद्धि मत्कृतम्। जन्मनीहाभवत्सत्त्वं पौर्विकं मे धनञ्जय ॥३-३३०-१२॥
sattvānna cyutapūrvo'haṃ sattvaṃ vai viddhi matkṛtam। janmanīhābhavatsattvaṃ paurvikaṃ me dhanañjaya ॥3-330-12॥
[सत्त्वात् (sattvāt) - from the essence; न (na) - not; च्युतपूर्वः (cyutapūrvaḥ) - previously fallen; अहम् (aham) - I; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - essence; वै (vai) - indeed; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मत्कृतम् (matkṛtam) - made by me; जन्मनि (janmani) - in birth; इह (iha) - here; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - essence; पौर्विकम् (paurvikam) - ancient; मे (me) - my; धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - O Dhananjaya;]
(From the essence, not previously fallen I; essence indeed know made by me; in birth here became essence ancient my O Dhananjaya;)
O Dhananjaya, know that I have never previously fallen from the essence; indeed, the essence was made by me. In this birth, the ancient essence became mine. (3-330-12)
निराशीःकर्मसंयुक्तं सात्वतं मां प्रकल्पय। सात्वतज्ञानदृष्टोऽहं सात्वतः सात्वतां पतिः ॥३-३३०-१३॥
nirāśīḥ-karma-saṃyuktaṃ sātvataṃ māṃ prakalpaya। sātvata-jñāna-dṛṣṭo'ham sātvataḥ sātvatāṃ patiḥ ॥3-330-13॥
[निराशीः (nirāśīḥ) - without expectation of result; कर्म (karma) - action; संयुक्तं (saṃyuktam) - joined with; सात्वतं (sātvataṃ) - Sātvata (devotee of Sātvata clan); माम् (mām) - me; प्रकल्पय (prakalpaya) - establish; सात्वत (sātvata) - Sātvata; ज्ञान (jñāna) - knowledge; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; अहम् (aham) - I; सात्वतः (sātvataḥ) - of the Sātvata; सात्वतां (sātvatām) - of the Sātvatas; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord;]
(Establish me, the Sātvata, joined with action without expectation of result. I, seen by the knowledge of the Sātvata, am the lord of the Sātvatas, of the Sātvata. (3-330-13))
Establish me, the Sātvata, as one engaged in action without expectation of results. I am perceived through the knowledge of the Sātvata, and I am the lord of the Sātvatas, belonging to the Sātvata. (3-330-13)
कृषामि मेदिनीं पार्थ भूत्वा कार्ष्णायसो महान्। कृष्णो वर्णश्च मे यस्मात्तस्मात्कृष्णोऽहमर्जुन ॥३-३३०-१४॥
kṛṣāmi medinīṃ pārtha bhūtvā kārṣṇāyaso mahān। kṛṣṇo varṇaś ca me yasmāt tasmāt kṛṣṇo'ham arjuna ॥3-330-14॥
[कृषामि (kṛṣāmi) - I cultivate; मेदिनीं (medinīṃ) - the earth; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; कार्ष्णायसो (kārṣṇāyaso) - of iron (plough); महान् (mahān) - great; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - black; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - color; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्जुन (arjuna) - O Arjuna;]
(I cultivate the earth, O son of Pṛthā, having become great with an iron plough; black is my color and because of that, therefore I am Kṛṣṇa, O Arjuna.)
O Arjuna, I cultivate the earth with a great iron plough; my color is black, and because of this, I am called Kṛṣṇa, O son of Pṛthā. (3-330-14)
मया संश्लेषिता भूमिरद्भिर्व्योम च वायुना। वायुश्च तेजसा सार्धं वैकुण्ठत्वं ततो मम ॥३-३३०-१५॥
mayā saṁśleṣitā bhūmiradbhirvyoma ca vāyunā। vāyuśca tejasā sārdhaṁ vaikuṇṭhatvaṁ tato mama ॥3-330-15॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; संश्लेषिता (saṁśleṣitā) - united; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; अद्भिः (adbhiḥ) - with waters; व्योम (vyoma) - space; च (ca) - and; वायुना (vāyunā) - with air; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; च (ca) - and; तेजसा (tejasā) - with fire; सार्धं (sārdhaṁ) - together; वैकुण्ठत्वं (vaikuṇṭhatvam) - state of Vaikuṇṭha; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; मम (mama) - my;]
(By me united, the earth with waters, space and with air; air and with fire together, the state of Vaikuṇṭha from that is mine.)
By me, the earth was united with water, space with air; air together with fire, and from that, the state of Vaikuṇṭha is mine. (3-330-15)
निर्वाणं परमं सौख्यं धर्मोऽसौ पर उच्यते। तस्मान्न च्युतपूर्वोऽहमच्युतस्तेन कर्मणा ॥३-३३०-१६॥
nirvāṇaṃ paramaṃ saukhyaṃ dharmo'sau para ucyate। tasmān na cyutapūrvo'ham acyutas tena karmaṇā ॥3-330-16॥
[निर्वाणं (nirvāṇam) - extinction; liberation; परमं (paramam) - supreme; सौख्यं (saukhyam) - happiness; bliss; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; righteousness; असौ (asau) - this; पर (para) - supreme; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; च्युतपूर्वः (cyutapūrvaḥ) - fallen before; अहम् (aham) - I; अच्युतः (acyutaḥ) - unfallen; unshaken; तेन (tena) - by that; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action;]
(Extinction, supreme happiness, duty this supreme is said. Therefore not fallen before I unfallen by that action.)
Extinction is said to be the supreme happiness and this is the supreme duty. Therefore, I have never fallen; by that action, I remain unfallen. (3-330-16)
पृथिवीनभसी चोभे विश्रुते विश्वलौकिके। तयोः सन्धारणार्थं हि मामधोक्षजमञ्जसा ॥३-३३०-१७॥
pṛthivī-nabhasī cobhe viśrute viśvalaukike। tayoḥ sandhāraṇārthaṃ hi mām adhokṣajam añjasā ॥3-330-17॥
[पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; नभसी (nabhasī) - sky; च (ca) - and; उभे (ubhe) - both; विश्रुते (viśrute) - well-known; विश्वलौकिके (viśvalaukike) - belonging to all worlds; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; सन्धारणार्थं (sandhāraṇārtham) - for the purpose of sustaining; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; अधोक्षजम् (adhokṣajam) - the transcendental; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - directly;]
(Earth and sky, both, well-known, belonging to all worlds; of those two, for the purpose of sustaining, indeed, me, the transcendental, directly.)
The earth and the sky, both well-known and belonging to all worlds—for the purpose of sustaining those two, indeed, I, the transcendental, directly (support them). (3-330-17)
निरुक्तं वेदविदुषो ये च शब्दार्थचिन्तकाः। ते मां गायन्ति प्राग्वंशे अधोक्षज इति स्थितिः ॥३-३३०-१८॥
niruktaṃ vedaviduṣo ye ca śabdārthacintakāḥ। te māṃ gāyanti prāgvaṃśe adhokṣaja iti sthitiḥ ॥3-330-18॥
[निरुक्तं (niruktaṃ) - etymology; वेदविदुषः (vedaviduṣaḥ) - of the knowers of the Veda; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; शब्दार्थचिन्तकाः (śabdārthacintakāḥ) - those who contemplate the meaning of words; ते (te) - they; माम् (mām) - me; गायन्ति (gāyanti) - sing; प्राग्वंशे (prāgvaṃśe) - in the ancient lineage; अधोक्षज (adhokṣaja) - Adhokṣaja; इति (iti) - thus; स्थितिः (sthitiḥ) - state;]
(Etymology, of the knowers of the Veda, who and those who contemplate the meaning of words; they me sing in the ancient lineage, Adhokṣaja, thus, state.)
Those who know the Vedas and those who contemplate the meaning of words through etymology, they sing of me in the ancient lineage as 'Adhokṣaja'; this is the state. (3-330-18)
शब्द एकमतैरेष व्याहृतः परमर्षिभिः। नान्यो ह्यधोक्षजो लोके ऋते नारायणं प्रभुम् ॥३-३३०-१९॥
śabda ekamatai reṣa vyāhṛtaḥ paramarṣibhiḥ। nānyo hy adhokṣajo loke ṛte nārāyaṇaṃ prabhum ॥3-330-19॥
[शब्द (śabda) - word; sound; एकमतैः (ekamataiḥ) - by those of one opinion; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; व्याहृतः (vyāhṛtaḥ) - declared; spoken; परमर्षिभिः (paramarṣibhiḥ) - by the supreme sages; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; हि (hi) - indeed; अधोक्षजः (adhokṣajaḥ) - the transcendental one; Adhokṣaja; लोके (loke) - in the world; ऋते (ṛte) - except; नारायणं (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the lord;]
(This word has been declared by those of one opinion, the supreme sages. Indeed, in the world, there is no other transcendental one except Nārāyaṇa, the lord.)
This statement has been unanimously declared by the supreme sages: in this world, there is truly no other transcendental lord except Nārāyaṇa. (3-330-19)
घृतं ममार्चिषो लोके जन्तूनां प्राणधारणम्। घृतार्चिरहमव्यग्रैर्वेदज्ञैः परिकीर्तितः ॥३-३३०-२०॥

(Clarified butter, my flames in the world, support of life of beings; having clarified butter as flame, I am celebrated by undistracted knowers of the Veda.)
Clarified butter, which is my flame in the world and the support of life for beings, is known as 'ghṛtārciḥ'—I am thus celebrated by undistracted Vedic scholars. (3-330-20)

(Three indeed constituents known as born of action thus and remembered. Bile, phlegm and wind and this aggregate is called.)
It is said that the three constituents, known as being born of action, are remembered: bile, phlegm, and wind; this aggregate is so called. (3-330-21)
एतैश्च धार्यते जन्तुरेतैः क्षीणैश्च क्षीयते। आयुर्वेदविदस्तस्मात्त्रिधातुं मां प्रचक्षते ॥३-३३०-२२॥

वृषो हि भगवान्धर्मः ख्यातो लोकेषु भारत। नैघण्टुकपदाख्यातं विद्धि मां वृषमुत्तमम् ॥३-३३०-२३॥

कपिर्वराहः श्रेष्ठश्च धर्मश्च वृष उच्यते। तस्माद्वृषाकपिं प्राह कश्यपो मां प्रजापतिः ॥३-३३०-२४॥

न चादिं न मध्यं तथा नैव चान्तं; कदाचिद्विदन्ते सुराश्चासुराश्च। अनाद्यो ह्यमध्यस्तथा चाप्यनन्तः; प्रगीतोऽहमीशो विभुर्लोकसाक्षी ॥३-३३०-२५॥

Neither the beginning, nor the middle, nor indeed the end is ever known by gods or demons. I, the lord, who am without beginning, middle, or end, am praised as the all-pervading witness of the worlds. (3-330-25)
शुचीनि श्रवणीयानि शृणोमीह धनञ्जय। न च पापानि गृह्णामि ततोऽहं वै शुचिश्रवाः ॥३-३३०-२६॥
śucīni śravaṇīyāni śṛṇomīha dhanañjaya। na ca pāpāni gṛhṇāmi tato'haṃ vai śuciśravāḥ ॥3-330-26॥

(Pure (things) worthy of hearing I hear here, O Dhananjaya; not and evil (things) I accept; therefore I indeed (am) one of pure fame.)
O Dhananjaya, I hear here only pure and worthy things; I do not accept evil things, therefore I am indeed one of pure fame. (3-330-26)
एकशृङ्गः पुरा भूत्वा वराहो दिव्यदर्शनः। इमामुद्धृतवान्भूमिमेकशृङ्गस्ततो ह्यहम् ॥३-३३०-२७॥
ekaśṛṅgaḥ purā bhūtvā varāho divyadarśanaḥ। imām uddhṛtavān bhūmim ekaśṛṅgaḥ tato hy aham ॥3-330-27॥

Once, having become a one-horned boar of divine appearance, I, the one-horned, indeed lifted up this earth. (3-330-27)
तथैवासं त्रिककुदो वाराहं रूपमास्थितः। त्रिककुत्तेन विख्यातः शरीरस्य तु मापनात् ॥३-३३०-२८॥
tathaivāsaṃ trikakudo vārāhaṃ rūpamāsthitaḥ। trikakuttena vikhyātaḥ śarīrasya tu māpanāt ॥3-330-28॥

(In that manner indeed I was the three-humped one, having assumed the form of a boar. By the three-humped (form) I am well-known, but from the measuring of the body.)
In the same way, I became the three-humped one, assuming the form of a boar. I am known as the three-humped because of the measurement of the body. (3-330-28)
विरिञ्च इति यः प्रोक्तः कपिलज्ञानचिन्तकैः। स प्रजापतिरेवाहं चेतनात्सर्वलोककृत् ॥३-३३०-२९॥
viriñca iti yaḥ proktaḥ kapilajñānacintakaiḥ। sa prajāpatiḥ eva aham cetanāt sarvalokakṛt ॥3-330-29॥

(Brahmā thus who is called by those who contemplate the knowledge of Kapila, he lord of creatures indeed I from consciousness creator of all worlds.)
He who is called 'Brahmā' by those who contemplate the knowledge of Kapila, that lord of creatures is indeed myself, the creator of all worlds from consciousness. (3-330-29)
विद्यासहायवन्तं मामादित्यस्थं सनातनम्। कपिलं प्राहुराचार्याः साङ्ख्या निश्चितनिश्चयाः ॥३-३३०-३०॥
vidyāsahāyavantaṃ mām ādityasthaṃ sanātanam। kapilaṃ prāhur ācāryāḥ sāṅkhyā niścitaniścayāḥ ॥3-330-30॥
[विद्या (vidyā) - knowledge; सहाय (sahāya) - help; वन्तं (vantaṃ) - possessing; माम् (mām) - me; आदित्यस्थं (ādityastham) - situated in the sun; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; कपिलम् (kapilam) - Kapila; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they call; आचार्याः (ācāryāḥ) - teachers; साङ्ख्याः (sāṅkhyāḥ) - Sāṅkhyas; निश्चितनिश्चयाः (niścitaniścayāḥ) - firmly resolved;]
(Knowledge-help-possessing me situated in the sun eternal Kapila they call teachers Sāṅkhyas firmly resolved.)
The teachers of Sāṅkhya, who are firmly resolved, call me, who possesses the help of knowledge, who is eternal and situated in the sun, as Kapila. (3-330-30)
हिरण्यगर्भो द्युतिमानेष यश्छन्दसि स्तुतः। योगैः सम्पूज्यते नित्यं स एवाहं विभुः स्मृतः ॥३-३३०-३१॥
hiraṇyagarbho dyutimāneṣa yaś chandasi stutaḥ। yogaiḥ sampūjyate nityaṃ sa evāhaṃ vibhuḥ smṛtaḥ ॥3-330-31॥
[हिरण्यगर्भः (hiraṇyagarbhaḥ) - golden-embryo; (the primordial being); द्युतिमान् (dyutimān) - radiant; possessing splendor; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; he; यः (yaḥ) - who; छन्दसि (chandasi) - in the Veda; in the meter; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - praised; योगैः (yogaiḥ) - by yogas; by means of yogic practices; सम्पूज्यते (sampūjyate) - is worshipped; is honored; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; eternally; सः (saḥ) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; verily; अहम् (aham) - I; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - all-pervading; omnipresent; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is remembered; is known;]
(The golden-embryo, radiant, this one who is praised in the Veda, is worshipped by yogas always; he indeed I, the all-pervading, am remembered.)
The radiant Hiranyagarbha, who is praised in the Vedas, is always worshipped through yogic practices; he is indeed myself, the all-pervading one, who is remembered. (3-330-31)
एकविंशतिशाखं च ऋग्वेदं मां प्रचक्षते। सहस्रशाखं यत्साम ये वै वेदविदो जनाः ॥३-३३०-३२॥
ekaviṃśatiśākhaṃ ca ṛgvedaṃ māṃ pracakṣate। sahasraśākhaṃ yat sāma ye vai vedavido janāḥ ॥3-330-32॥
[एकविंशति (ekaviṃśati) - twenty-one; शाखं (śākham) - branch; च (ca) - and; ऋग्वेदं (ṛgvedam) - Ṛgveda; मां (mām) - me; प्रचक्षते (pracakṣate) - they call; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; शाखं (śākham) - branch; यत् (yat) - which; साम (sāma) - Sāma; ये (ye) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Veda; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(Twenty-one branch and Ṛgveda me they call. Thousand branch which Sāma who indeed knowers of the Veda people.)
They call me the Ṛgveda with twenty-one branches. The Sāma, which has a thousand branches, is known by those people who are indeed knowers of the Veda. (3-330-32)
गायन्त्यारण्यके विप्रा मद्भक्तास्तेऽपि दुर्लभाः ॥३-३३०-३२॥
gāyantyāraṇyake viprā madbhaktāste'pi durlabhāḥ ॥3-330-32॥
[गायन्ति (gāyanti) - they sing; (from root gā, to sing); आरण्यके (āraṇyake) - in the forest; (locative of āraṇyaka, forest); विप्राः (viprāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; (learned men); मद्भक्ताः (madbhaktāḥ) - my devotees; (mad- my, bhakta- devotee); ते (te) - they; (those); अपि (api) - also; (even); दुर्लभाः (durlabhāḥ) - rare; (difficult to obtain);]

षट्पञ्चाशतमष्टौ च सप्तत्रिंशतमित्युत। यस्मिञ्शाखा यजुर्वेदे सोऽहमाध्वर्यवे स्मृतः ॥३-३३०-३३॥
ṣaṭpañcāśatamaṣṭau ca saptatriṃśamit yuta। yasmiñchākhā yajurvede so'hamādhvaryave smṛtaḥ ॥3-330-33॥

pañcakalpam atharvāṇaṃ kṛtyābhiḥ paribṛṃhitam। kalpayanti hi māṃ viprā atharvāṇavidas tathā ॥3-330-34॥
[पञ्चकल्पम् (pañcakalpam) - having five rituals; अथर्वाणम् (atharvāṇam) - Atharva Veda; कृत्याभिः (kṛtyābhiḥ) - by rites; परिबृंहितम् (paribṛṃhitam) - encompassed; कल्पयन्ति (kalpayanti) - they establish; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - the sages; अथर्वाणविदः (atharvāṇavidaḥ) - knowers of the Atharva Veda; तथा (tathā) - thus;]

O Pārtha, that which is called Dhayaśiras, which arises as the bestower of boons, I am indeed that in the latter part, the knower of the division of syllables in order. (3-330-36)
रामादेशितमार्गेण मत्प्रसादान्महात्मना। पाञ्चालेन क्रमः प्राप्तस्तस्माद्भूतात्सनातनात् ॥ बाभ्रव्यगोत्रः स बभौ प्रथमः क्रमपारगः ॥३-३३०-३७॥
rāmādeśitamārgeṇa matprasādān mahātmanā। pāñcālena kramaḥ prāptas tasmād bhūtāt sanātanāt ॥ bābhravyagotraḥ sa babhau prathamaḥ kramapāragaḥ ॥3-330-37॥

(By the path instructed by Rāma, by my grace, by the great-souled Pāñcāla, the order was attained from that being, from the eternal. Of the Bābhravya lineage, he shone, the first, one who has crossed over the order.)

नारायणाद्वरं लब्ध्वा प्राप्य योगमनुत्तमम्। क्रमं प्रणीय शिक्षां च प्रणयित्वा स गालवः ॥३-३३०-३८॥

Having obtained a boon from Nārāyaṇa and attained unsurpassed union, having established order and imparted instruction, Gālava (did so). (3-330-38)
कण्डरीकोऽथ राजा च ब्रह्मदत्तः प्रतापवान्। जातीमरणजं दुःखं स्मृत्वा स्मृत्वा पुनः पुनः ॥ सप्तजातिषु मुख्यत्वाद्योगानां सम्पदं गतः ॥३-३३०-३९॥

Then Kaṇḍarīka and the powerful king Brahmadatta, repeatedly remembering the suffering arising from birth and death, attained the highest attainment of yogic practices over seven births. (3-330-39)
पुराहमात्मजः पार्थ प्रथितः कारणान्तरे। धर्मस्य कुरुशार्दूल ततोऽहं धर्मजः स्मृतः ॥३-३३०-४०॥

O Pārtha, formerly I was known as the son for another reason; but now, O best of Kurus, I am remembered as the son of Dharma. (3-330-40)
नरनारायणौ पूर्वं तपस्तेपतुरव्ययम्। धर्मयानं समारूढौ पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥३-३३०-४१॥

(Nara and Nārāyaṇa formerly practiced imperishable austerity. Having mounted the vehicle of dharma, (they were) on the Gandhamādana mountain.)
In former times, Nara and Nārāyaṇa practiced imperishable austerities. Mounted on the chariot of righteousness, they were on Mount Gandhamādana. (3-330-41)
तत्कालसमयं चैव दक्षयज्ञो बभूव ह। न चैवाकल्पयद्भागं दक्षो रुद्रस्य भारत ॥३-३३०-४२॥
tatkālasamayaṃ caiva dakṣayajño babhūva ha। na caivākalpayad bhāgaṃ dakṣo rudrasya bhārata ॥3-330-42॥

(That time occasion and indeed Daksha's sacrifice became indeed. Not and indeed assigned portion Daksha of Rudra O Bhārata.)
At that very time, Daksha's sacrifice took place. But Daksha did not assign a portion to Rudra, O Bhārata. (3-330-42)
ततो दधीचिवचनाद्दक्षयज्ञमपाहरत्। ससर्ज शूलं क्रोधेन प्रज्वलन्तं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥३-३३०-४३॥
tato dadhīcivacanāddakṣayajñamapāharat। sasarja śūlaṃ krodhena prajvalantaṃ muhurmuhuḥ ॥3-330-43॥

(That spear, having made to ashes Dakṣa's sacrifice in detail, of us two suddenly went from the vicinity of Badarī hermitage. With great speed, O Pārtha, falling on Nārāyaṇa's chest.)
That spear, after reducing Dakṣa's sacrifice completely to ashes, suddenly departed from the vicinity of the Badarī hermitage where we were. With great speed, O Pārtha, it fell upon the chest of Nārāyaṇa. (3-330-44)
ततः स्वतेजसाविष्टाः केशा नारायणस्य ह। बभूवुर्मुञ्जवर्णास्तु ततोऽहं मुञ्जकेशवान् ॥३-३३०-४५॥
tataḥ svatejasāviṣṭāḥ keśā nārāyaṇasya ha। babhūvurmuñjavarṇāstu tato'haṃ muñjakeśavān ॥3-330-45॥

(Then, the hairs of Nārāyaṇa, pervaded by his own brilliance, indeed became of muñja grass color; but then I became one with muñja-colored hair.)
Then, Nārāyaṇa's hairs, filled with his own radiance, turned the color of muñja grass; thus, I became one with muñja-colored hair. (3-330-45)
तच्च शूलं विनिर्धूतं हुङ्कारेण महात्मना। जगाम शङ्करकरं नारायणसमाहतम् ॥३-३३०-४६॥
tac ca śūlaṃ vinirdhūtaṃ huṅkāreṇa mahātmanā। jagāma śaṅkarakaraṃ nārāyaṇasamāhatam ॥3-330-46॥

(That spear, completely shaken by the roar of the great-souled one, went to Śaṅkara's hand, struck by Nārāyaṇa.)
That spear, shaken loose by the roar of the great-souled one, was struck by Nārāyaṇa and returned to Śaṅkara's hand. (3-330-46)
अथ रुद्र उपाधावत्तावृषी तपसान्वितौ। तत एनं समुद्धूतं कण्ठे जग्राह पाणिना ॥३-३३०-४७॥
atha rudra upādhāvattāvṛṣī tapasānvitau। tata enaṃ samuddhūtaṃ kaṇṭhe jagrāha pāṇinā ॥3-330-47॥

(Then Rudra approached those two bulls endowed with austerity. Then he seized him, completely shaken, at the throat with (his) hand. (3-330-47))

[अथ (atha) - then; रुद्रविघातार्थम् (rudravighātārtham) - for the purpose of slaying Rudra; इषीकाम् (iṣīkām) - reed; जगृहे (jagṛhe) - he took; नरः (naraḥ) - the man; मन्त्रैः (mantraiḥ) - with mantras; च (ca) - and; संयुयोज (saṃyuyoja) - he joined; आशु (āśu) - quickly; सः (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; परशुः (paraśuḥ) - axe; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Then, for the purpose of slaying Rudra, the man took a reed; and with mantras, he quickly joined (it), he became a great axe.)

(Thrown and suddenly at Rudra, breaking obtained then. Thereafter I Khandaparaśu remembered from the splitting of the axe.)
I was thrown suddenly at Rudra and then achieved the breaking. Therefore, I am remembered as Khandaparaśu, from the splitting by the axe. (3-330-49)

asminyuddhe tu vārṣṇeya trailokyamathane tadā। jayaṃ kaḥ prāptavāṃstatra śaṃsaitanme janārdana ॥3-330-50॥
[अस्मिन्युद्धे (asminyuddhe) - in this battle; तु (tu) - but; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; त्रैलोक्यमथने (trailokyamathane) - destroyer of the three worlds; तदा (tadā) - then; जयं (jayaṃ) - victory; कः (kaḥ) - who; प्राप्तवांश् (prāptavāṃs) - obtained; तत्र (tatra) - there; शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - to me; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janārdana;]
(In this battle but, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, destroyer of the three worlds, then, victory who obtained there, tell this to me, O Janārdana.)
But in this battle, O Vārṣṇeya, destroyer of the three worlds, who obtained victory then? Tell me this, O Janārdana. (3-330-50)

(Of those two engaged in battle, of Rudra and Nārāyaṇa as the selves, disturbed suddenly all the worlds all became then.)

नागृह्णात्पावकः शुभ्रं मखेषु सुहुतं हविः। वेदा न प्रतिभान्ति स्म ऋषीणां भावितात्मनाम् ॥३-३३०-५२॥
nāgṛhṇātpāvakaḥ śubhraṃ makheṣu suhutaṃ haviḥ। vedā na pratibhānti sma ṛṣīṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥3-330-52॥
[न (na) - not; अगृह्णात् (agṛhṇāt) - accepted; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; शुभ्रं (śubhraṃ) - pure; मखेषु (makheṣu) - in sacrifices; सुहुतं (suhutaṃ) - well-offered; हविः (haviḥ) - oblation; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; न (na) - not; प्रतिभान्ति (pratibhānti) - appear; स्म (sma) - indeed; ऋषीणाम् (ṛṣīṇām) - of the sages; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of those whose minds are purified;]

(The gods, passion and darkness indeed together entered then; the earth trembled then and the sky split indeed;)
At that time, the gods, along with passion and darkness, all entered together; the earth trembled, and then the sky split apart. (3-330-53)
निष्प्रभाणि च तेजांसि ब्रह्मा चैवासनाच्च्युतः। अगाच्छोषं समुद्रश्च हिमवांश्च व्यशीर्यत ॥३-३३०-५४॥
niṣprabhāṇi ca tejāṃsi brahmā caivāsanāccyutaḥ। agāc choṣaṃ samudraś ca himavāṃś ca vyaśīryata ॥3-330-54॥
[निष्प्रभाणि (niṣprabhāṇi) - devoid of radiance; च (ca) - and; तेजांसि (tejāṃsi) - lights; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आसनात् (āsanāt) - from the seat; च्युतः (cyutaḥ) - fallen; अगात् (agāt) - went; शोषं (śoṣam) - to dryness; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; च (ca) - and; हिमवान् (himavān) - the Himavat (Himalaya); च (ca) - and; व्यशीर्यत (vyaśīryata) - was shattered;]
(Devoid of radiance and the lights, Brahmā also indeed from the seat fallen; went to dryness the ocean and the Himavat and was shattered.)
The lights became devoid of radiance, and Brahmā too fell from his seat; the ocean dried up, and the Himalaya was shattered. (3-330-54)
तस्मिन्नेवं समुत्पन्ने निमित्ते पाण्डुनन्दन। ब्रह्मा वृतो देवगणैरृषिभिश्च महात्मभिः ॥ आजगामाशु तं देशं यत्र युद्धमवर्तत ॥३-३३०-५५॥
tasminnevaṁ samutpanne nimitte pāṇḍunandana। brahmā vṛto devagaṇairṛṣibhiśca mahātmabhiḥ॥ ājagāmāśu taṁ deśaṁ yatra yuddhamavartata॥3-330-55॥

(In that thus arisen cause, O descendant of Pāṇḍu, Brahmā, surrounded by groups of gods and by sages and by great souls, quickly came to that place where the battle was taking place.)
O descendant of Pāṇḍu, when such a cause had arisen, Brahmā, accompanied by hosts of gods, sages, and great souls, quickly came to the place where the battle was taking place. (3-330-55)
साञ्जलिप्रग्रहो भूत्वा चतुर्वक्त्रो निरुक्तगः। उवाच वचनं रुद्रं लोकानामस्तु वै शिवम् ॥ न्यस्यायुधानि विश्वेश जगतो हितकाम्यया ॥३-३३०-५६॥
sāñjalipragraho bhūtvā caturvaktro niruktagah। uvāca vacanaṃ rudraṃ lokānāmas tu vai śivam ॥ nyasyāyudhāni viśveśa jagato hitakāmyayā ॥3-330-56॥
[साञ्जलिप्रग्रहः (sāñjalipragrahaḥ) - with joined palms; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; चतुर्वक्त्रः (caturvaktraḥ) - four-faced; निरुक्तगः (niruktagah) - knower of etymology; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; रुद्रम् (rudram) - to Rudra; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; वै (vai) - indeed; शिवम् (śivam) - auspicious; न्यस्य (nyasya) - having placed down; आयुधानि (āyudhāni) - weapons; विश्वेश (viśveśa) - O Lord of the universe; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; हितकाम्यया (hitakāmyayā) - with the desire for welfare;]
(With joined palms having become four-faced, the knower of etymology said speech to Rudra: "Let there indeed be auspiciousness for the worlds." Having placed down the weapons, O Lord of the universe, for the welfare of the world.)
With joined palms, having assumed four faces and being a knower of etymology, he spoke to Rudra: "Let there indeed be auspiciousness for the worlds." Having set aside the weapons, O Lord of the universe, for the welfare of the world. (3-330-56)
यदक्षरमथाव्यक्तमीशं लोकस्य भावनम्। कूटस्थं कर्तृनिर्द्वंद्वमकर्तेति च यं विदुः ॥३-३३०-५७॥
yad akṣaram athāvyaktam īśaṃ lokasya bhāvanam। kūṭasthaṃ kartṛ-nirdvandvam akarteti ca yaṃ viduḥ ॥3-330-57॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - imperishable; अथ (atha) - and; अव्यक्तम् (avyaktam) - unmanifest; ईशम् (īśam) - lord; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; भावनम् (bhāvanam) - creator; कूटस्थम् (kūṭastham) - unchanging; कर्तृ (kartṛ) - doer; निर्द्वंद्वम् (nirdvandvam) - free from duality; अकर्तेति (akarteti) - as non-doer; च (ca) - and; यम् (yam) - whom; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(Which imperishable and unmanifest lord, creator of the world, unchanging, doer, free from duality, as non-doer, and whom they know.)
They know that imperishable, unmanifest Lord, the creator of the world, who is unchanging, the doer, free from duality, and also as the non-doer. (3-330-57)
व्यक्तिभावगतस्यास्य एका मूर्तिरियं शिवा। नरो नारायणश्चैव जातौ धर्मकुलोद्वहौ ॥३-३३०-५८॥
vyaktibhāva-gatasya asya ekā mūrtir iyaṃ śivā। naraḥ nārāyaṇaḥ ca eva jātau dharma-kula-udvahau ॥3-330-58॥
[व्यक्तिभावगतस्य (vyaktibhāva-gatasya) - of the one who has attained the state of individuality; अस्य (asya) - of this; एका (ekā) - one; मूर्ति (mūrti) - form; इयं (iyaṃ) - this; शिवा (śivā) - auspicious (feminine); नरः (naraḥ) - Nara; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; जातौ (jātau) - were born; धर्मकुलोद्वहौ (dharma-kula-udvahau) - the upholders of the family of dharma;]
(Of the one who has attained the state of individuality, of this, one form, this auspicious (feminine); Nara and Nārāyaṇa indeed were born, the upholders of the family of dharma.)
This is the one auspicious form of the one who has attained individuality; Nara and Nārāyaṇa, the upholders of the family of dharma, were indeed born. (3-330-58)
तपसा महता युक्तौ देवश्रेष्ठौ महाव्रतौ। अहं प्रसादजस्तस्य कस्मिंश्चित्कारणान्तरे ॥ त्वं चैव क्रोधजस्तात पूर्वसर्गे सनातनः ॥३-३३०-५९॥
tapasā mahatā yuktau devaśreṣṭhau mahāvratau। ahaṃ prasādajastasya kasmiṃścitkāraṇāntare॥ tvaṃ caiva krodhajastāta pūrvasarge sanātanaḥ॥3-330-59॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महता (mahatā) - great; युक्तौ (yuktau) - engaged; देवश्रेष्ठौ (devaśreṣṭhau) - best among gods; महाव्रतौ (mahāvratau) - great vow-holders; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रसादजः (prasādajaḥ) - born of grace; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - in some; कारणान्तरे (kāraṇāntare) - other cause; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; क्रोधजः (krodhajaḥ) - born of anger; तात (tāta) - O dear one; पूर्वसर्गे (pūrvasarge) - in previous creation; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(By great austerity engaged, best among gods, great vow-holders; I, born of his grace, in some other cause. You indeed, born of anger, O dear one, in previous creation, eternal. (3-330-59))
Engaged in great austerity, both of you are the best among gods and holders of great vows. I was born of his grace for some other reason, while you, O dear one, were indeed born of anger in a previous creation, being eternal. (3-330-59)
मया च सार्धं वरदं विबुधैश्च महर्षिभिः। प्रसादयाशु लोकानां शान्तिर्भवतु माचिरम् ॥३-३३०-६०॥
mayā ca sārdhaṃ varadaṃ vibudhaiś ca maharṣibhiḥ। prasādayāśu lokānāṃ śāntir bhavatu māciram ॥3-330-60॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; वरदं (varadam) - the giver of boons; विबुधैः (vibudhaiḥ) - by the wise (gods); च (ca) - and; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by the great sages; प्रसादय (prasādaya) - propitiate; आशु (āśu) - quickly; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; भवतु (bhavatu) - let there be; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - long (delay);]
(By me and together with the giver of boons, by the wise and by the great sages, propitiate quickly; of the worlds, let there be peace, not long (delay).)
Together with me, the bestower of boons, the wise and the great sages, quickly propitiate so that peace may come to the worlds without delay. (3-330-60)
ब्रह्मणा त्वेवमुक्तस्तु रुद्रः क्रोधाग्निमुत्सृजन्। प्रसादयामास ततो देवं नारायणं प्रभुम् ॥ शरणं च जगामाद्यं वरेण्यं वरदं हरिम् ॥३-३३०-६१॥
brahmaṇā tvevamuktastu rudraḥ krodhāgnim utsṛjan। prasādayām āsa tato devaṃ nārāyaṇaṃ prabhum ॥ śaraṇaṃ ca jagāmādyaṃ vareṇyaṃ varadaṃ harim ॥3-330-61॥
[ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; तु (tu) - but; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; क्रोध-अग्निम् (krodha-agnim) - anger-fire; उत्सृजन् (utsṛjan) - releasing; प्रसादयाम् (prasādayām) - to appease; आस (āsa) - he began; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवम् (devam) - the god; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the lord; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - he went; आद्यं (ādyaṃ) - the first; वरेण्यं (vareṇyaṃ) - most excellent; वरदम् (varadam) - bestower of boons; हरिम् (harim) - Hari;]
(By Brahmā but thus addressed but Rudra, anger-fire releasing, to appease he began; then the god Nārāyaṇa the lord. Refuge and he went, the first, most excellent, bestower of boons, Hari. (3-330-61))
But when thus addressed by Brahmā, Rudra, releasing the fire of anger, then began to appease the god Nārāyaṇa, the lord. He went for refuge to Hari, the first, the most excellent, the bestower of boons. (3-330-61)
ततोऽथ वरदो देवो जितक्रोधो जितेन्द्रियः। प्रीतिमानभवत्तत्र रुद्रेण सह सङ्गतः ॥३-३३०-६२॥
tato'tha varado devo jitakrodho jitendriyaḥ। prītimānabhavattatra rudreṇa saha saṅgataḥ ॥3-330-62॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; from that; अथ (atha) - then; next; वरदः (varadaḥ) - bestower of boons; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; जितक्रोधः (jitakrodhaḥ) - one who has conquered anger; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of joy; pleased; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; was; तत्र (tatra) - there; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - with Rudra; सह (saha) - together with; with; सङ्गतः (saṅgataḥ) - joined; united;]
(From then, then, the bestower of boons, the god, one who has conquered anger, one who has conquered the senses, full of joy, became, there, with Rudra, together with, joined.)
Then, the god who bestows boons, having conquered anger and the senses, became full of joy there, being united together with Rudra. (3-330-62)
ऋषिभिर्ब्रह्मणा चैव विबुधैश्च सुपूजितः। उवाच देवमीशानमीशः स जगतो हरिः ॥३-३३०-६३॥
ṛṣibhir brahmaṇā caiva vibudhaiś ca supūjitaḥ। uvāca devam īśānam īśaḥ sa jagato hariḥ ॥3-330-63॥
[ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विबुधैः (vibudhaiḥ) - by the wise; च (ca) - and; सुपूजितः (supūjitaḥ) - well-honored; उवाच (uvāca) - said; देवम् (devam) - to the god; ईशानम् (īśānam) - to the lord; ईशः (īśaḥ) - the lord; स (sa) - he; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Viṣṇu);]
(By sages, by Brahmā and indeed by the wise, well-honored, said to the god, to the lord, the lord, he, of the world, Hari (Viṣṇu).)
He, Hari, the lord of the world, who was well-honored by sages, Brahmā, and the wise, spoke to the god, the lord. (3-330-63)
यस्त्वां वेत्ति स मां वेत्ति यस्त्वामनु स मामनु। नावयोरन्तरं किञ्चिन्मा ते भूद्बुद्धिरन्यथा ॥३-३३०-६४॥
yastvāṃ vetti sa māṃ vetti yastvām-anu sa mām-anu। nāvayor antaraṃ kiñcin mā te bhūd buddhir anyathā ॥3-330-64॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वेदि (vetti) - knows; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - me; वेदि (vetti) - knows; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनु (anu) - after; सः (saḥ) - he; माम् (mām) - me; अनु (anu) - after; न (na) - not; अवयोः (avayoḥ) - of us two; अन्तरम् (antaram) - difference; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - even a little; मा (mā) - let not; ते (te) - your; भूत् (bhūt) - be; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - understanding; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Who knows you, he knows me; who follows you, he follows me. Not between us two (is there) any difference, let not your understanding be otherwise.)
Whoever knows you knows me; whoever follows you follows me. There is not even the slightest difference between us two—let not your understanding be otherwise. (3-330-64)
अद्य प्रभृति श्रीवत्सः शूलाङ्कोऽयं भवत्वयम्। मम पाण्यङ्कितश्चापि श्रीकण्ठस्त्वं भविष्यसि ॥३-३३०-६५॥
adya prabhṛti śrīvatsaḥ śūlāṅko'yaṃ bhavatvayam। mama pāṇyaṅkitaścāpi śrīkaṇṭhastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi ॥3-330-65॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; श्रीवत्सः (śrīvatsaḥ) - Śrīvatsa (auspicious mark); शूलाङ्कः (śūlāṅkaḥ) - bearing the mark of the trident; अयम् (ayam) - this; भवतु (bhavatu) - let it be; अयम् (ayam) - this; मम (mama) - my; पाण्यङ्कितः (pāṇyaṅkitaḥ) - marked on the hand; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; श्रीकण्ठः (śrīkaṇṭhaḥ) - Śrīkaṇṭha (auspicious-throated, an epithet of Śiva); त्वम् (tvam) - you; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will become;]
(Today from now on, Śrīvatsa, bearing the mark of the trident, let this be. This, marked on my hand, and also Śrīkaṇṭha, you will become. (3-330-65))
From today onwards, let this Śrīvatsa, marked with the trident, be so. You, marked on my hand, will also become Śrīkaṇṭha. (3-330-65)
एवं लक्षणमुत्पाद्य परस्परकृतं तदा। सख्यं चैवातुलं कृत्वा रुद्रेण सहितावृषी ॥ तपस्तेपतुरव्यग्रौ विसृज्य त्रिदिवौकसः ॥३-३३०-६६॥
evaṁ lakṣaṇam utpādya parasparakṛtaṁ tadā। sakhyaṁ caiva atulaṁ kṛtvā rudreṇa sahitau vṛṣī॥ tapas tepatur avyagrau visṛjya tridivaukasaḥ॥3-330-66॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; लक्षणम् (lakṣaṇam) - mark; उत्पाद्य (utpādya) - having produced; परस्परकृतम् (parasparakṛtam) - mutually done; तदा (tadā) - then; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अतुलम् (atulam) - unequalled; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - with Rudra; सहितौ (sahitau) - together; वृषी (vṛṣī) - the two bulls; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तेपतुः (tepatuḥ) - they performed; अव्यग्रौ (avyagrau) - undisturbed; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having abandoned; त्रिदिवौकसः (tridivaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]
(Thus, having produced the mark, mutually done then; having made indeed unequalled friendship with Rudra, the two bulls together performed austerity, undisturbed, having abandoned the dwellers of heaven.)
Thus, after establishing the mark and forming a mutual bond, the two bulls, having made an unequalled friendship with Rudra, together performed austerities undisturbed, having left behind the dwellers of heaven. (3-330-66)
एष ते कथितः पार्थ नारायणजयो मृधे। नामानि चैव गुह्यानि निरुक्तानि च भारत ॥ ऋषिभिः कथितानीह यानि सङ्कीर्तितानि ते ॥३-३३०-६७॥
eṣa te kathitaḥ pārtha nārāyaṇajayo mṛdhe। nāmāni caiva guhyāni niruktāni ca bhārata॥ ṛṣibhiḥ kathitāni iha yāni saṅkīrtitāni te॥3-330-67॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; ते (te) - to you; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - has been told; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; नारायणजयः (nārāyaṇajayaḥ) - victory of Nārāyaṇa; मृधे (mṛdhe) - in battle; नामानि (nāmāni) - names; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गुह्यानि (guhyāni) - secret; निरुक्तानि (niruktāni) - explained; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; कथितानि (kathitāni) - have been told; इह (iha) - here; यानि (yāni) - which; सङ्कीर्तितानि (saṅkīrtitāni) - have been recited; ते (te) - to you;]
(This to you has been told, O Pārtha, the victory of Nārāyaṇa in battle; and also the names, indeed, the secret and explained, O Bhārata. By sages have been told here which have been recited to you.)
O Pārtha, I have told you here about the victory of Nārāyaṇa in battle, as well as the names, both secret and explained, O Bhārata. These have been recited to you as told by the sages. (3-330-67)
एवं बहुविधै रूपैश्चरामीह वसुन्धराम्। ब्रह्मलोकं च कौन्तेय गोलोकं च सनातनम् ॥ मया त्वं रक्षितो युद्धे महान्तं प्राप्तवाञ्जयम् ॥३-३३०-६८॥
evaṃ bahuvidhai rūpaiś carāmīha vasundharām। brahmalokaṃ ca kaunteya golokaṃ ca sanātanam ॥ mayā tvaṃ rakṣito yuddhe mahāntaṃ prāptavāñ jayām ॥3-330-68॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधै (bahuvidhai) - by many kinds; रूपैः (rūpaiḥ) - by forms; चरामि (carāmi) - I move; इह (iha) - here; वसुन्धराम् (vasundharām) - the earth; ब्रह्मलोकं (brahmalokaṃ) - Brahma's world; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; गोलोकं (golokaṃ) - the world of cows; च (ca) - and; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal; मया (mayā) - by me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; रक्षितः (rakṣitaḥ) - protected; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; महान्तं (mahāntam) - great; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - you have obtained; जयम् (jayam) - victory;]
(Thus, by many kinds of forms, I move here (on) the earth, Brahma's world and, O son of Kunti, the world of cows, and the eternal. By me, you, protected in battle, have obtained great victory.)
Thus, in many different forms, I move here on the earth, in Brahma's world, and in the eternal Goloka, O son of Kunti. By my protection in battle, you have achieved great victory. (3-330-68)
यस्तु ते सोऽग्रतो याति युद्धे सम्प्रत्युपस्थिते। तं विद्धि रुद्रं कौन्तेय देवदेवं कपर्दिनम् ॥३-३३०-६९॥
yastu te so'grato yāti yuddhe sampratyupasthite। taṃ viddhi rudraṃ kaunteya devadevaṃ kapardinam ॥3-330-69॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; सः (saḥ) - he; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; याति (yāti) - goes; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; सम्प्रति-उपस्थिते (samprati-upasthite) - when just present; तम् (tam) - him; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; देव-देवम् (deva-devam) - god of gods; कपर्दिनम् (kapardinam) - the matted-haired one;]
(Who but your he in front goes in battle when just present, him know Rudra, O son of Kunti, god of gods, the matted-haired one.)
O son of Kunti, know that he who goes before you in battle at the very moment of engagement is Rudra, the god of gods, the matted-haired one. (3-330-69)
कालः स एव कथितः क्रोधजेति मया तव। निहतांस्तेन वै पूर्वं हतवानसि वै रिपून् ॥३-३३०-७०॥
kālaḥ sa eva kathitaḥ krodhajeti mayā tava। nihatāṃs tena vai pūrvaṃ hatavān asi vai ripūn ॥3-330-70॥
[कालः (kālaḥ) - time; स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - declared; क्रोधज (krodhaja) - born of anger; इति (iti) - thus; मया (mayā) - by me; तव (tava) - to you; निहताम् (nihatām) - slain; तेन (tena) - by him; वै (vai) - indeed; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; हतवान् (hatavān) - you have slain; असि (asi) - are; वै (vai) - indeed; रिपून् (ripūn) - enemies;]
(Time, he indeed declared as born of anger thus by me to you. Slain by him indeed before you have slain indeed enemies.)
That time, which I told you as 'born of anger', it was he who previously slew your enemies; by him, indeed, your enemies were slain. (3-330-70)
अप्रमेयप्रभावं तं देवदेवमुमापतिम्। नमस्व देवं प्रयतो विश्वेशं हरमव्ययम् ॥३-३३०-७१॥
aprameyaprabhāvaṃ taṃ devadevamumāpatim। namasva devaṃ prayato viśveśaṃ haramavyayam ॥3-330-71॥
[अप्रमेयप्रभावं (aprameyaprabhāvam) - of immeasurable power; तं (taṃ) - that; देवदेवम् (devadevam) - god of gods; उमापतिम् (umāpatim) - consort of Umā; नमस्व (namasva) - bow down; देवं (devaṃ) - the god; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - with devotion; विश्वेशम् (viśveśam) - lord of the universe; हरम् (haram) - Hara; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable;]
(Of immeasurable power that god of gods, consort of Umā; bow down to the god with devotion, lord of the universe, Hara, imperishable.)
Bow with devotion to that god of gods, the consort of Umā, whose power is immeasurable, to the imperishable Hara, the lord of the universe. (3-330-71)
