ब्रह्मन्सुमहदाख्यानं भवता परिकीर्तितम्। यच्छ्रुत्वा मुनयः सर्वे विस्मयं परमं गताः ॥१२-३३१-१॥
brahman sumahad ākhyānaṃ bhavatā parikīrtitam। yat śrutvā munayaḥ sarve vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ ॥12-331-1॥
[ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - narrative; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; परिकीर्तितम् (parikīrtitam) - has been recounted; यत् (yat) - which; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - the sages; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; गताः (gatāḥ) - attained;]
(O Brāhmaṇa, a very great narrative has been recounted by you. Which, having heard, all the sages attained supreme astonishment.)
O Brāhmaṇa, you have recounted a very great narrative. Upon hearing it, all the sages were filled with the utmost astonishment. (12-331-1)
इदं शतसहस्राद्धि भारताख्यानविस्तरात्। आमथ्य मतिमन्थेन ज्ञानोदधिमनुत्तमम् ॥१२-३३१-२॥
idaṃ śatasahasrāddhi bhāratākhyānavistarāt। āmathya matimanthena jñānodadhimanuttamam ॥12-331-2॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; शतसहस्रात् (śatasahasrāt) - from a hundred thousand; हि (hi) - indeed; भारताख्यानविस्तरात् (bhāratākhyānavistarāt) - from the expanse of the narrative of the Bhārata; आमथ्य (āmathya) - having churned; मतिमन्थेन (matimanthena) - by the churning of the intellect; ज्ञानोदधिम् (jñānodadhim) - the ocean of knowledge; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - the unsurpassed (best);]
(This, indeed, from a hundred thousand, from the expanse of the narrative of the Bhārata, having churned by the churning of the intellect, the unsurpassed ocean of knowledge.)
This, indeed, is the unsurpassed ocean of knowledge, extracted by churning with the intellect from the vast expanse of the hundred-thousand-versed narrative of the Bhārata. (12-331-2)
नवनीतं यथा दध्नो मलयाच्चन्दनं यथा। आरण्यकं च वेदेभ्य ओषधिभ्योऽमृतं यथा ॥१२-३३१-३॥
navanītaṃ yathā dadhno malayāccandanaṃ yathā। āraṇyakaṃ ca vedebhya oṣadhibhyo'mṛtaṃ yathā ॥12-331-3॥

समुद्धृतमिदं ब्रह्मन्कथामृतमनुत्तमम्। तपोनिधे त्वयोक्तं हि नारायणकथाश्रयम् ॥१२-३३१-४॥
samuddhṛtam idaṃ brahman kathāmṛtam anuttamam। taponidhe tvayoktaṃ hi nārāyaṇakathāśrayam ॥12-331-4॥

O Brahman, this unsurpassed nectar of stories, well-extracted and supported by the tales of Nārāyaṇa, has indeed been spoken by you, O treasure of austerity. (12-331-4)
स हीशो भगवान्देवः सर्वभूतात्मभावनः। अहो नारायणं तेजो दुर्दर्शं द्विजसत्तम ॥१२-३३१-५॥
sa hīśo bhagavān devaḥ sarvabhūtātmabhāvanaḥ। aho nārāyaṇaṃ tejo durdarśaṃ dvijasattama ॥12-331-5॥

यत्राविशन्ति कल्पान्ते सर्वे ब्रह्मादयः सुराः। ऋषयश्च सगन्धर्वा यच्च किञ्चिच्चराचरम् ॥ न ततोऽस्ति परं मन्ये पावनं दिवि चेह च ॥१२-३३१-६॥
yatrāviśanti kalpānte sarve brahmādayaḥ surāḥ। ṛṣayaś ca sagandharvā yac ca kiñcic carācaram॥ na tato'sti paraṃ manye pāvanaṃ divi ceha ca॥12-331-6॥
[यत्र (yatra) - where; आविशन्ति (āviśanti) - enter; कल्पान्ते (kalpānte) - at the end of a kalpa; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ब्रह्मादयः (brahmādayaḥ) - Brahma and others; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; सगन्धर्वाः (sagandharvāḥ) - with Gandharvas; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; चराचरम् (carācaram) - moving and unmoving; न (na) - not; ततः (tataḥ) - than that; अस्ति (asti) - is; परम् (param) - higher; मन्ये (manye) - I think; पावनम् (pāvanam) - purifier; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and;]
(Where at the end of a kalpa all Brahma and others, gods, sages and with Gandharvas, and whatever moving and unmoving things enter; not than that is higher, I think, purifier in heaven and here and.)
Where, at the end of a kalpa, all—Brahma and the other gods, sages, Gandharvas, and every moving and unmoving being—enter; I think there is no purifier greater than that, either in heaven or here. (12-331-6)
सर्वाश्रमाभिगमनं सर्वतीर्थावगाहनम्। न तथा फलदं चापि नारायणकथा यथा ॥१२-३३१-७॥
sarvāśramābhigamanaṁ sarvatīrthāvagāhanam। na tathā phaladaṁ cāpi nārāyaṇakathā yathā ॥12-331-7॥
[सर्वाश्रम (sarva-āśrama) - all hermitages; अभिगमनं (abhigamanam) - approaching; सर्वतीर्थ (sarva-tīrtha) - all sacred places; अवगाहनम् (avagāhanam) - bathing; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; फलदं (phaladam) - fruit-giving; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नारायणकथा (nārāyaṇa-kathā) - story of Nārāyaṇa; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Approaching all hermitages, bathing in all sacred places, not so fruit-giving and also the story of Nārāyaṇa as.)
Visiting all hermitages and bathing in all sacred places do not give as much fruit as the story of Nārāyaṇa does. (12-331-7)
सर्वथा पाविताः स्मेह श्रुत्वेमामादितः कथाम्। हरेर्विश्वेश्वरस्येह सर्वपापप्रणाशनीम् ॥१२-३३१-८॥
sarvathā pāvitāḥ smeha śrutvemāmāditaḥ kathām। harerviśveśvarasyeha sarvapāpapraṇāśanīm ॥12-331-8॥
[सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; पाविताः (pāvitāḥ) - purified; स्म (sma) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; इमाम् (imām) - this (feminine); आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; कथाम् (kathām) - story; हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari; विश्वेश्वरस्य (viśveśvarasya) - of the Lord of the universe; इह (iha) - here; सर्वपापप्रणाशनीम् (sarvapāpapraṇāśanīm) - destroying all sins (feminine);]
(In every way purified indeed here, having heard this from the beginning story of Hari, of the Lord of the universe, here destroying all sins.)
We have indeed been completely purified here by hearing this story of Hari, the Lord of the universe, from the beginning, which destroys all sins. (12-331-8)
न चित्रं कृतवांस्तत्र यदार्यो मे धनञ्जयः। वासुदेवसहायो यः प्राप्तवाञ्जयमुत्तमम् ॥१२-३३१-९॥
na citraṃ kṛtavāṃs tatra yad āryo me dhanañjayaḥ। vāsudeva-sahāyo yaḥ prāptavāñ jayam uttamam ॥12-331-9॥
[न (na) - not; चित्रं (citraṃ) - wonder; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; तत्र (tatra) - there; यदा (yadā) - when; आर्यः (āryaḥ) - noble one; मे (me) - my; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya; वासुदेवसहायः (vāsudeva-sahāyaḥ) - with Vāsudeva as helper; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - has obtained; जयम् (jayam) - victory; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(Not a wonder has done there when my noble one Dhananjaya, with Vāsudeva as helper, who has obtained victory supreme.)
It is not a wonder that my noble Dhananjaya, with Vāsudeva as his helper, has achieved the highest victory there. (12-331-9)
न चास्य किञ्चिदप्राप्यं मन्ये लोकेष्वपि त्रिषु। त्रैलोक्यनाथो विष्णुः स यस्यासीत्साह्यकृत्सखा ॥१२-३३१-१०॥
na cāsya kiñcidaprāpyaṃ manye lokeṣvapi triṣu। trailokyanātho viṣṇuḥ sa yasyāsītsāhyakṛtsakhā ॥12-331-10॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अप्राप्यं (aprāpyaṃ) - not unattainable; मन्ये (manye) - I think; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; अपि (api) - even; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; त्रैलोक्यनाथः (trailokyanāthaḥ) - the lord of the three worlds; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; स (sa) - he; यस्य (yasya) - whose; असीत् (asīt) - was; साह्यकृत् (sāhyakṛt) - helper; सखा (sakhā) - friend;]
(Not and of him anything not unattainable I think in the worlds even in the three; the lord of the three worlds Viṣṇu he whose was helper friend.)
I think there is nothing unattainable for him even in the three worlds, for Viṣṇu, the lord of the three worlds, was his friend and helper. (12-331-10)
धन्याश्च सर्व एवासन्ब्रह्मंस्ते मम पूर्वकाः। हिताय श्रेयसे चैव येषामासीज्जनार्दनः ॥१२-३३१-११॥
dhanyāś ca sarva evāsan brahmaṁs te mama pūrvakāḥ। hitāya śreyase caiva yeṣām āsīj janārdanaḥ ॥12-331-11॥
[धन्याः (dhanyāḥ) - fortunate; blessed; च (ca) - and; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; only; आसन् (āsan) - were; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; ते (te) - those; मम (mama) - my; पूर्वकाः (pūrvakāḥ) - ancestors; forefathers; हिताय (hitāya) - for welfare; श्रेयसे (śreyase) - for highest good; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; only; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana;]
(Fortunate and all indeed were, O Brahman, those my ancestors for whose welfare and highest good indeed Janardana was.)
O Brahman, all my ancestors were truly blessed, for Janardana was present for their welfare and supreme good. (12-331-11)
तपसापि न दृश्यो हि भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः। यं दृष्टवन्तस्ते साक्षाच्छ्रीवत्साङ्कविभूषणम् ॥१२-३३१-१२॥
tapasāpi na dṛśyo hi bhagavāṁllokapūjitaḥ। yaṁ dṛṣṭavantaḥ te sākṣācchrīvatsāṅkavibhūṣaṇam ॥12-331-12॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; दृश्यः (dṛśyaḥ) - visible; हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; लोकपूजितः (lokapūjitaḥ) - worshipped by the world; यम् (yam) - whom; दृष्टवन्तः (dṛṣṭavantaḥ) - have seen; ते (te) - those; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; श्रीवत्साङ्कविभूषणम् (śrīvatsāṅkavibhūṣaṇam) - adorned with the mark of Śrīvatsa;]
(By austerity even not visible indeed the Lord worshipped by the world; whom have seen those directly adorned with the mark of Śrīvatsa.)
Even by austerity, the Lord worshipped by the world is not visible; those who have seen Him directly, adorned with the mark of Śrīvatsa, are truly blessed. (12-331-12)
तेभ्यो धन्यतरश्चैव नारदः परमेष्ठिजः। न चाल्पतेजसमृषिं वेद्मि नारदमव्ययम् ॥ श्वेतद्वीपं समासाद्य येन दृष्टः स्वयं हरिः ॥१२-३३१-१३॥
tebhyo dhanyataraś caiva nāradaḥ parameṣṭhijaḥ। na cālpitejasam ṛṣiṃ vedmi nāradam avyayam॥ śvetadvīpaṃ samāsādya yena dṛṣṭaḥ svayaṃ hariḥ॥12-331-13॥
[तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - from them; धन्यतरः (dhanyataraḥ) - more blessed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; परमेष्ठिजः (parameṣṭhijaḥ) - born of Brahmā; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अल्पतेजसम् (alpitejasam) - of little splendor; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; नारदम् (nāradam) - Nārada; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; श्वेतद्वीपम् (śvetadvīpam) - Śvetadvīpa; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; येन (yena) - by whom; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
(From them, more blessed indeed is Nārada, born of Brahmā; I do not know a sage of little splendor, Nārada the imperishable. Having approached Śvetadvīpa, by whom Hari himself was seen. (12-331-13))
Among them, Nārada, born of Brahmā, is indeed the most blessed; I do not know any sage of lesser splendor than the imperishable Nārada. It was he who, having reached Śvetadvīpa, saw Hari himself. (12-331-13)
देवप्रसादानुगतं व्यक्तं तत्तस्य दर्शनम्। यद्दृष्टवांस्तदा देवमनिरुद्धतनौ स्थितम् ॥१२-३३१-१४॥
devaprasādānugataṃ vyaktaṃ tattasya darśanam। yaddṛṣṭavāṃstadā devam aniruddhatanau sthitam ॥12-331-14॥
[देव (deva) - god; प्रसाद (prasāda) - grace; अनुगतं (anugatam) - accompanied by; व्यक्तं (vyaktam) - manifested; तत् (tat) - that; तस्य (tasya) - his; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; यत् (yat) - which; दृष्टवान् (dṛṣṭavān) - saw; तदा (tadā) - then; देव (deva) - god; अनिरुद्ध (aniruddha) - Aniruddha; तनौ (tanau) - in the body; स्थितम् (sthitam) - situated;]
(Accompanied by the grace of god, that manifestation was his sight; which he saw then, the god situated in the body of Aniruddha.)

badarī-māśramaṃ yat tu nāradaḥ prādravat punaḥ। nara-nārāyaṇau draṣṭuṃ kiṃ nu tat kāraṇaṃ mune ॥12-331-15॥
[बदरीमाश्रमं (badarī-māśramaṃ) - Badarī hermitage; यत् (yat) - which; तु (tu) - but; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्राद्रवत् (prādravat) - ran towards; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; नरनारायणौ (nara-nārāyaṇau) - Nara and Nārāyaṇa; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; मुने (mune) - O sage;]

श्वेतद्वीपान्निवृत्तश्च नारदः परमेष्ठिजः। बदरीमाश्रमं प्राप्य समागम्य च तावृषी ॥१२-३३१-१६॥
śvetadvīpānnivṛttaś ca nāradaḥ parameṣṭhijaḥ। badarīm āśramaṃ prāpya samāgamya ca tau ṛṣī ॥12-331-16॥

कियन्तं कालमवसत्काः कथाः पृष्टवांश्च सः। श्वेतद्वीपादुपावृत्ते तस्मिन्वा सुमहात्मनि ॥१२-३३१-१७॥
kiyantaṃ kālam avasat kāḥ kathāḥ pṛṣṭavāṃś ca saḥ। śvetadvīpād upāvṛtte tasmin vā sumahātmani ॥12-331-17॥

(Having attained the white great continent and having seen Hari, the imperishable, Nārada, having returned, O king, quickly came to Meru, bearing in his heart the burden of what was said by the Supreme Self.)

पश्चादस्याभवद्राजन्नात्मनः साध्वसं महत्। यद्गत्वा दूरमध्वानं क्षेमी पुनरिहागतः ॥१२-३३१-२१॥

जालपादभुजौ तौ तु पादयोश्चक्रलक्षणौ। व्यूढोरस्कौ दीर्घभुजौ तथा मुष्कचतुष्किणौ ॥१२-३३१-२५॥

षष्टिदन्तावष्टदंष्ट्रौ मेघौघसदृशस्वनौ। स्वास्यौ पृथुललाटौ च सुहनू सुभ्रुनासिकौ ॥१२-३३१-२६॥
ṣaṣṭidantāvaṣṭadaṃṣṭrau meghaughasadṛśasvanau। svāsyau pṛthulalāṭau ca suhanū subhrunāsikau ॥12-331-26॥

आतपत्रेण सदृशे शिरसी देवयोस्तयोः। एवं लक्षणसम्पन्नौ महापुरुषसञ्ज्ञितौ ॥१२-३३१-२७॥
ātapatreṇa sadṛśe śirasī devayos tayoḥ। evaṃ lakṣaṇasampannau mahāpuruṣasañjñitau ॥12-331-27॥

बभूवान्तर्गतमतिर्निरीक्ष्य पुरुषोत्तमौ। सदोगतास्तत्र ये वै सर्वभूतनमस्कृताः ॥१२-३३१-२९॥
babhūvāntargatamatirnirīkṣya puruṣottamau। sadogatāstatra ye vai sarvabhūtanamaskṛtāḥ ॥12-331-29॥

With his mind turned inward, having seen the two supreme persons, he became one who, there, has attained the good state—those who are indeed honored by all beings. (12-331-29)
श्वेतद्वीपे मया दृष्टास्तादृशावृषिसत्तमौ। इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम् ॥ उपोपविविशे तत्र पीठे कुशमये शुभे ॥१२-३३१-३०॥
śvetadvīpe mayā dṛṣṭāstādṛśāvṛṣisattamau। iti sañcintya manasā kṛtvā cābhipradakṣiṇam ॥ upopaviviśe tatra pīṭhe kuśamaye śubhe ॥12-331-30॥

(In the Śveta-dvīpa, by me, such excellent sages (two) were seen; thus, having thought with the mind, having done circumambulation, and, sat down near there on the seat made of kuśa grass, auspicious.)
In Śveta-dvīpa, I saw two such excellent sages; thinking thus in my mind, and after circumambulating them, I sat down nearby on the auspicious seat made of kuśa grass. (12-331-30)
ततस्तौ तपसां वासौ यशसां तेजसामपि। ऋषी शमदमोपेतौ कृत्वा पूर्वाह्णिकं विधिम् ॥१२-३३१-३१॥
tatastau tapasāṃ vāsau yaśasāṃ tejasāmapi। ṛṣī śamadamopetau kṛtvā pūrvāhṇikaṃ vidhim ॥12-331-31॥

अथ नारायणस्तत्र नारदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। सुखोपविष्टं विश्रान्तं कृतातिथ्यं सुखस्थितम् ॥१२-३३१-३४॥
atha nārāyaṇas tatra nāradaṃ vākyam abravīt। sukhopaviṣṭaṃ viśrāntaṃ kṛtātithyaṃ sukhasthitam ॥12-331-34॥

अपीदानीं स भगवान्परमात्मा सनातनः। श्वेतद्वीपे त्वया दृष्ट आवयोः प्रकृतिः परा ॥१२-३३१-३५॥

(Seen by me the person possessing splendor, bearing universal form, imperishable. All indeed worlds situated there, also gods with sages. Even today and this I see, you two seeing eternal.)

The very characteristics by which Hari, who possesses the unmanifest form, is endowed—by those same characteristics, you two, who possess the manifest form, are indeed endowed. (12-331-37)
दृष्टौ मया युवां तत्र तस्य देवस्य पार्श्वतः। इह चैवागतोऽस्म्यद्य विसृष्टः परमात्मना ॥१२-३३१-३८॥
dṛṣṭau mayā yuvāṃ tatra tasya devasya pārśvataḥ। iha caiva āgataḥ asmi adya visṛṣṭaḥ paramātmanā ॥12-331-38॥

को हि नाम भवेत्तस्य तेजसा यशसा श्रिया। सदृशस्त्रिषु लोकेषु ऋते धर्मात्मजौ युवाम् ॥१२-३३१-३९॥
ko hi nāma bhavet tasya tejasā yaśasā śriyā। sadṛśas triṣu lokeṣu ṛte dharmātmajau yuvām ॥12-331-39॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; नाम (nāma) - truly; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; श्रिया (śriyā) - by prosperity; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; ऋते (ṛte) - except; धर्मात्मजौ (dharmātmajau) - the two sons of Dharma; युवाम् (yuvām) - you two;]
(Who indeed truly would be of him by brilliance, by fame, by prosperity, equal in the three worlds, except the two sons of Dharma, you two.)
Who indeed in all the three worlds could be equal to him in brilliance, fame, and prosperity, except you two, the sons of Dharma? (12-331-39)
तेन मे कथितं पूर्वं नाम क्षेत्रज्ञसञ्ज्ञितम्। प्रादुर्भावाश्च कथिता भविष्यन्ति हि ये यथा ॥१२-३३१-४०॥
tena me kathitaṃ pūrvaṃ nāma kṣetrajñasañjñitam। prādurbhāvaś ca kathitā bhaviṣyanti hi ye yathā ॥12-331-40॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; मे (me) - to me; कथितं (kathitaṃ) - spoken; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; नाम (nāma) - name; क्षेत्रज्ञसञ्ज्ञितम् (kṣetrajñasañjñitam) - called kṣetrajña; प्रादुर्भावाः (prādurbhāvāḥ) - manifestations; च (ca) - and; कथिताः (kathitāḥ) - have been spoken; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; हि (hi) - indeed; ये (ye) - which; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(By him to me spoken before name called kṣetrajña; manifestations and have been spoken will be indeed which as.)
Previously, the name called kṣetrajña was spoken to me by him; and the manifestations that will be, have also been described as they will occur. (12-331-40)
तत्र ये पुरुषाः श्वेताः पञ्चेन्द्रियविवर्जिताः। प्रतिबुद्धाश्च ते सर्वे भक्ताश्च पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥१२-३३१-४१॥
tatra ye puruṣāḥ śvetāḥ pañcendriyavivarjitāḥ। pratibuddhāś ca te sarve bhaktāś ca puruṣottamam ॥12-331-41॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; ये (ye) - who; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; श्वेताः (śvetāḥ) - white; पञ्चेन्द्रियविवर्जिताः (pañcendriyavivarjitāḥ) - devoid of five senses; प्रतिबुद्धाः (pratibuddhāḥ) - awakened; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; भक्ताः (bhaktāḥ) - devotees; च (ca) - and; पुरुषोत्तमम् (puruṣottamam) - the Supreme Person;]
(There who men white devoid of five senses awakened and they all devotees and the Supreme Person.)
There, those men who are white, devoid of the five senses, awakened, all of them are devotees of the Supreme Person. (12-331-41)
तेऽर्चयन्ति सदा देवं तैः सार्धं रमते च सः। प्रियभक्तो हि भगवान्परमात्मा द्विजप्रियः ॥१२-३३१-४२॥
te'rcayanti sadā devaṃ taiḥ sārdhaṃ ramate ca saḥ। priyabhakto hi bhagavānparamātmā dvijapriyaḥ ॥12-331-42॥
[ते (te) - they; अर्चयन्ति (arcayanti) - worship; सदा (sadā) - always; देवम् (devam) - the god; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; रमते (ramate) - delights; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रियभक्तः (priyabhaktaḥ) - dear devotee; हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; परमात्मा (paramātmā) - Supreme Self; द्विजप्रियः (dvijapriyaḥ) - fond of the twice-born;]
(They worship always the god; with them together delights and he; dear devotee indeed the Lord Supreme Self fond of the twice-born;)
They always worship the god; with them, he delights as well. The Lord, the Supreme Self, is indeed fond of dear devotees and is especially fond of the twice-born. (12-331-42)
रमते सोऽर्च्यमानो हि सदा भागवतप्रियः। विश्वभुक्सर्वगो देवो बान्धवो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ स कर्ता कारणं चैव कार्यं चातिबलद्युतिः ॥१२-३३१-४३॥
ramate so'rcyamāno hi sadā bhāgavatapriyaḥ। viśvabhuksarvago devo bāndhavo bhaktavatsalaḥ ॥ sa kartā kāraṇaṃ caiva kāryaṃ cātibaladyutiḥ ॥12-331-43॥
[रमते (ramate) - delights; rejoices; सः (saḥ) - he; अर्च्यमानः (arcyamānaḥ) - being worshipped; हि (hi) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; भागवतप्रियः (bhāgavatapriyaḥ) - dear to the devotees; विश्वभुक् (viśvabhuk) - eater of all; enjoyer of the universe; सर्वगः (sarvagaḥ) - all-pervading; देवः (devaḥ) - god; बान्धवः (bāndhavaḥ) - relative; friend; भक्तवत्सलः (bhaktavatsalaḥ) - affectionate to devotees; सः (saḥ) - he; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; creator; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कार्यं (kāryam) - effect; action; च (ca) - and; अतिबलद्युतिः (atibaladyutiḥ) - of excessive strength and splendor;]
(He delights, being worshipped, indeed, always, dear to the devotees; eater of all, all-pervading, god, relative, affectionate to devotees. He is the doer, cause indeed, effect and of excessive strength and splendor. (12-331-43))
He always delights in being worshipped, for he is dear to devotees; he is the enjoyer of the universe, all-pervading, divine, a friend and affectionate to devotees. He is the creator, the cause and the effect, and possesses immense strength and brilliance. (12-331-43)
तपसा योज्य सोऽऽत्मानं श्वेतद्वीपात्परं हि यत्। तेज इत्यभिविख्यातं स्वयम्भासावभासितम् ॥१२-३३१-४४॥
tapasā yojya so'ātmānaṃ śvetadvīpāt paraṃ hi yat। teja ity abhivikhyātaṃ svayambhāsāvabhāsitam ॥12-331-44॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; योज्य (yojya) - to be joined; सः (saḥ) - he; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; श्वेतद्वीपात् (śvetadvīpāt) - from Śvetadvīpa; परम् (param) - beyond; हि (hi) - indeed; यत् (yat) - which; तेजः (tejaḥ) - radiance; इति (iti) - thus; अभिविख्यातम् (abhivikhyātam) - well-known; स्वयम्भास (svayambhāsa) - by self-luminosity; अवभासितम् (avabhāsitam) - illuminated;]
(By austerity to be joined he self from Śvetadvīpa beyond indeed which; radiance thus well-known by self-luminosity illuminated.)
He, by austerity, is to be united with the self which is indeed beyond Śvetadvīpa; that radiance, thus well-known, is illuminated by its own light. (12-331-44)
शान्तिः सा त्रिषु लोकेषु सिद्धानां भावितात्मनाम्। एतया शुभया बुद्ध्या नैष्ठिकं व्रतमास्थितः ॥१२-३३१-४५॥
śāntiḥ sā triṣu lokeṣu siddhānāṃ bhāvitātmanām। etayā śubhayā buddhyā naiṣṭhikaṃ vratamāsthitaḥ ॥12-331-45॥
[शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; सा (sā) - that; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in the three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; सिद्धानां (siddhānām) - of the perfected ones; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of those whose selves are cultivated; एतया (etayā) - by this; शुभया (śubhayā) - auspicious; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; नैष्ठिकं (naiṣṭhikaṃ) - firm; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - undertaken;]
(Peace that in the three worlds of the perfected ones of those whose selves are cultivated; by this auspicious intellect, the firm vow is undertaken.)

न तत्र सूर्यस्तपति न सोमोऽभिविराजते। न वायुर्वाति देवेशे तपश्चरति दुश्चरम् ॥१२-३३१-४६॥

(Not there sun shines, not moon shines forth. Not wind blows; in the Lord of the gods, austerity difficult to perform is performed.)
There, the sun does not shine, nor does the moon shine forth. The wind does not blow; in the Lord of the gods, austerity that is difficult to perform is practiced. (12-331-46)
वेदीमष्टतलोत्सेधां भूमावास्थाय विश्वभुक्। एकपादस्थितो देव ऊर्ध्वबाहुरुदङ्मुखः ॥ साङ्गानावर्तयन्वेदांस्तपस्तेपे सुदुश्चरम् ॥१२-३३१-४७॥
vedīmaṣṭatalotsedhāṃ bhūmāvāsthāya viśvabhuk। ekapādasthito deva ūrdhvabāhurudaṅmukhaḥ ॥ sāṅgānāvartayanvedāṃstapastepe suduścaram ॥12-331-47॥
[वेदीम् (vedīm) - altar (accusative singular); अष्टतल (aṣṭatala) - eight-leveled; eight layers; उत्सेधाम् (utsedhām) - height (accusative singular); भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; on earth; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having established; having taken up; विश्वभुक् (viśvabhuk) - all-consuming; eater of all; एकपादस्थितः (ekapādasthitaḥ) - standing on one foot; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; ऊर्ध्वबाहुः (ūrdhvabāhuḥ) - with arms raised; उदङ्मुखः (udaṅmukhaḥ) - facing north; साङ्गान् (sāṅgān) - with limbs; with parts; आवर्तयन् (āvartayan) - reciting; repeating; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas (accusative plural); तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; तेपे (tepe) - performed; practiced; सुदुश्चरम् (suduścaram) - very difficult to perform;]
(Having established an eight-leveled altar of height on the ground, the all-consuming (one), the god, standing on one foot, with arms raised, facing north, reciting the Vedas with their limbs, performed austerity very difficult to practice.)
Having set up an eight-leveled altar of height on the earth, the all-consuming god stood on one foot, with arms raised and facing north. Reciting the Vedas with all their parts, he performed austerities that were extremely difficult to accomplish. (12-331-47)
यद्ब्रह्मा ऋषयश्चैव स्वयं पशुपतिश्च यत्। शेषाश्च विबुधश्रेष्ठा दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः ॥१२-३३१-४८॥
yad brahmā ṛṣayaś caiva svayaṃ paśupatiś ca yat। śeṣāś ca vibudhaśreṣṭhā daityadānavarākṣasāḥ ॥12-331-48॥
[यत् (yat) - which; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; पशुपतिः (paśupatiḥ) - Paśupati; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - the rest; च (ca) - and; विबुधश्रेष्ठाः (vibudhaśreṣṭhāḥ) - the best among the wise; दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः (daityadānavarākṣasāḥ) - Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas;]
(Which Brahmā, sages indeed, himself Paśupati and which the rest and the best among the wise, Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas (12-331-48))
That which Brahmā, the sages, Paśupati himself, as well as the rest—the foremost among the wise, the Daityas, Dānavas, and Rākṣasas—(all know or do). (12-331-48)
नागाः सुपर्णा गन्धर्वाः सिद्धा राजर्षयश्च ये। हव्यं कव्यं च सततं विधिपूर्वं प्रयुञ्जते ॥ कृत्स्नं तत्तस्य देवस्य चरणावुपतिष्ठति ॥१२-३३१-४९॥
nāgāḥ suparṇā gandharvāḥ siddhā rājarṣayaś ca ye। havyaṃ kavyaṃ ca satataṃ vidhipūrvaṃ prayuñjate ॥ kṛtsnaṃ tat tasya devasya caraṇāv upatiṣṭhati ॥12-331-49॥
[नागाः (nāgāḥ) - serpents; सुपर्णाः (suparṇāḥ) - divine birds; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - celestial musicians; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; राजर्षयः (rājarṣayaḥ) - royal sages; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; हव्यम् (havyam) - offering to gods; कव्यम् (kavyam) - offering to ancestors; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; विधिपूर्वम् (vidhipūrvam) - according to rule; प्रयुञ्जते (prayuñjate) - employ; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; तस्य (tasya) - of him; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; चरणौ (caraṇau) - feet; उपतिष्ठति (upatiṣṭhati) - attends;]
(Serpents, divine birds, celestial musicians, perfected beings, royal sages and those who always employ offerings to gods and offerings to ancestors according to rule; all that attends the feet of that god.)
Serpents, divine birds, Gandharvas, Siddhas, royal sages, and all those who always offer oblations to gods and ancestors according to prescribed rules—all of that attends at the feet of that god. (12-331-49)
याः क्रियाः सम्प्रयुक्तास्तु एकान्तगतबुद्धिभिः। ताः सर्वाः शिरसा देवः प्रतिगृह्णाति वै स्वयम् ॥१२-३३१-५०॥
yāḥ kriyāḥ samprayuktās tu ekāntagatabuddhibhiḥ। tāḥ sarvāḥ śirasā devaḥ pratigṛhṇāti vai svayam ॥12-331-50॥
[याः (yāḥ) - which (feminine plural); क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - actions; सम्प्रयुक्ताः (samprayuktāḥ) - well-performed; thoroughly engaged; तु (tu) - but; एकान्तगतबुद्धिभिः (ekāntagatabuddhibhiḥ) - by those whose intellect is fixed in single-pointedness; ताः (tāḥ) - those (feminine plural); सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (feminine plural); शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; प्रतिगृह्णाति (pratigṛhṇāti) - accepts; वै (vai) - indeed; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself;]
(Which actions are well-performed but by those whose intellect is fixed in single-pointedness, those all with the head the god accepts indeed himself.)
All actions that are well-performed by those whose minds are steadfastly focused, the god himself accepts with his head. (12-331-50)
न तस्यान्यः प्रियतरः प्रतिबुद्धैर्महात्मभिः। विद्यते त्रिषु लोकेषु ततोऽस्म्यैकान्तिकं गतः ॥ इह चैवागतस्तेन विसृष्टः परमात्मना ॥१२-३३१-५१॥
na tasyānyaḥ priyataraḥ pratibuddhairmahātmabhiḥ। vidyate triṣu lokeṣu tato'smyaikāntikaṃ gataḥ ॥ iha caivāgatastena visṛṣṭaḥ paramātmanā ॥12-331-51॥
[न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; प्रियतरः (priyataraḥ) - dearer; प्रतिबुद्धैः (pratibuddhaiḥ) - by those who are awakened; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by great souls; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; एकान्तिकं (ekāntikaṃ) - exclusively; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आगतः (āgataḥ) - arrived; तेन (tena) - by him; विसृष्टः (visṛṣṭaḥ) - sent forth; परमात्मना (paramātmanā) - by the Supreme Self;]
(Not of him other dearer by those who are awakened by great souls exists in three worlds; therefore I am exclusively gone. Here and indeed arrived by him sent forth by the Supreme Self. (12-331-51))
There is no one dearer to him than I among the awakened great souls in the three worlds; therefore, I have gone exclusively to him. Here also, I have arrived, sent forth by the Supreme Self. (12-331-51)
एवं मे भगवान्देवः स्वयमाख्यातवान्हरिः। आसिष्ये तत्परो भूत्वा युवाभ्यां सह नित्यशः ॥१२-३३१-५२॥
evaṃ me bhagavān devaḥ svayam ākhyātavān hariḥ। āsiṣye tatparaḥ bhūtvā yuvābhyāṃ saha nityaśaḥ ॥12-331-52॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; मे (me) - to me; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; आख्यातवान् (ākhyātavān) - has declared; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; आसिष्ये (āsiṣye) - I shall remain seated; तत्परः (tatparaḥ) - intent on that; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; युवाभ्यां (yuvābhyāṃ) - with you two; सह (saha) - together; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always;]
(Thus to me the blessed god himself, Hari, has declared. I shall remain seated, intent on that, having become (so), together with you two, always. (12-331-52))
