O Brahman, are there many persons, or is there only one? Who indeed here is the best person, and what is said to be the origin here? (12-338-1)

ततः खान्निपपाताशु धरणीधरमूर्धनि। अग्रतश्चाभवत्प्रीतो ववन्दे चापि पादयोः ॥१२-३३८-१२॥
tataḥ khān nipapātāśu dharaṇīdhara-mūrdhani। agrataś ca abhavat prītaḥ vavande ca api pādayoḥ ॥12-338-12॥

उवाच चैनं भगवांश्चिरस्यागतमात्मजम्। स्वागतं ते महाबाहो दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि मेऽन्तिकम् ॥१२-३३८-१४॥

kaccitte kuśalaṃ putra svādhyāyatapasoḥ sadā। nityamugratapāstvaṃ hi tataḥ pṛcchāmi te punaḥ ॥12-338-15॥

(Whether to you well-being, son, of self-study and austerity always? Constantly one of severe austerity you indeed, therefore I ask you again.)
Son, is your well-being always ensured in your self-study and austerities? Since you are constantly engaged in severe austerities, I therefore ask you again. (12-338-15)

त्वत्प्रसादेन भगवन्स्वाध्यायतपसोर्मम। कुशलं चाव्ययं चैव सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा ॥१२-३३८-१६॥
tvatprasādena bhagavansvādhyāyatapasormama। kuśalaṃ cāvyayaṃ caiva sarvasya jagatastathā ॥12-338-16॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - by you; by thy; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by grace; by favor; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; स्वाध्याय (svādhyāya) - self-study; recitation of sacred texts; तपसोः (tapasoḥ) - of austerity; of penance; (dual genitive); मम (mama) - of me; my; कुशलं (kuśalam) - welfare; well-being; च (ca) - and; अव्ययं (avyayam) - imperishable; undecaying; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; of everything; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; तथा (tathā) - so; thus;]
(By your grace, O Lord, of my self-study and austerity, welfare and imperishability indeed, of all the world so.)
O Lord, by your grace, may there be welfare and imperishability for my self-study and austerity, and likewise for the entire world. (12-338-16)
चिरदृष्टो हि भगवान्वैराजसदने मया। ततोऽहं पर्वतं प्राप्तस्त्विमं त्वत्पादसेवितम् ॥१२-३३८-१७॥
ciradṛṣṭo hi bhagavānvairājasadane mayā। tato'haṃ parvataṃ prāptastvimam tvatpādasevitam ॥12-338-17॥
[चिरदृष्टः (ciradṛṣṭaḥ) - long-seen; (seen after a long time); हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; वैराजसदने (vairājasadane) - in the palace of Viraja; मया (mayā) - by me; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अहम् (aham) - I; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - reached; त्व् (tv) - your; इमम् (imam) - this; त्वत्पादसेवितम् (tvatpādasevitam) - served by your feet;]
(Long-seen indeed the venerable one in the palace of Viraja by me. Then I the mountain reached, this served by your feet. (12-338-17))
Indeed, after a long time I saw the venerable one in the palace of Viraja. Then I reached this mountain, which has been served by your feet. (12-338-17)
कौतूहलं चापि हि मे एकान्तगमनेन ते। नैतत्कारणमल्पं हि भविष्यति पितामह ॥१२-३३८-१८॥
kautūhalaṃ cāpi hi me ekāntagamanena te। naitatkāraṇamalpaṃ hi bhaviṣyati pitāmaha ॥12-338-18॥
[कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; एकान्तगमनेन (ekāntagamanena) - by your going to seclusion; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; अल्पम् (alpam) - small; हि (hi) - indeed; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Curiosity and also indeed to me by your going to seclusion, your, not this reason small indeed will be, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, indeed I am curious; your going into seclusion cannot be for a small reason.
किं नु तत्सदनं श्रेष्ठं क्षुत्पिपासाविवर्जितम्। सुरासुरैरध्युषितमृषिभिश्चामितप्रभैः ॥१२-३३८-१९॥
kiṁ nu tatsadanaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ kṣutpipāsāvivarjitam। surāsurairadhyuṣitamṛṣibhiścāmitaprabhaiḥ ॥12-338-19॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; सदनं (sadanaṁ) - abode; श्रेष्ठं (śreṣṭham) - best; क्षुत् (kṣut) - hunger; पिपासा (pipāsā) - thirst; विवर्जितम् (vivarjitam) - devoid of; सुरासुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - by gods and asuras; अध्युषितम् (adhyuṣitam) - inhabited; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; च (ca) - and; अमितप्रभैः (amitaprabhaiḥ) - by those of immeasurable radiance;]
(What indeed that abode best hunger thirst devoid of by gods and asuras inhabited by sages and by those of immeasurable radiance.)
What is that best abode, free from hunger and thirst, inhabited by gods, asuras, sages, and those of immeasurable radiance? (12-338-19)
गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च सततं संनिषेवितम्। उत्सृज्येमं गिरिवरमेकाकी प्राप्तवानसि ॥१२-३३८-२०॥
gandharvair apsarobhiś ca satataṃ saṃniṣevitam। utsṛjyemaṃ girivaram ekākī prāptavān asi ॥12-338-20॥
[गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - by Apsarases; च (ca) - and; सततम् (satatam) - always; संनिषेवितम् (saṃniṣevitam) - frequented; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; इमम् (imam) - this; गिरिवरम् (girivaram) - excellent mountain; एकाकी (ekākī) - alone; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - you have reached; असि (asi) - are;]
(By Gandharvas, by Apsarases and always frequented; having abandoned this excellent mountain, alone you have reached are (you are arrived). (12-338-20))
This excellent mountain, always frequented by Gandharvas and Apsarases, you have abandoned and come here alone. (12-338-20)

बहवः पुरुषा ब्रह्मंस्त्वया सृष्टाः स्वयम्भुवा। सृज्यन्ते चापरे ब्रह्मन्स चैकः पुरुषो विराट् ॥१२-३३८-२२॥
bahavaḥ puruṣā brahman tvayā sṛṣṭāḥ svayambhuvā। sṛjyante ca apare brahman sa ca ekaḥ puruṣaḥ virāṭ ॥12-338-22॥
[बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - persons; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; स्वयम्भुवा (svayambhuvā) - by the self-born; सृज्यन्ते (sṛjyante) - are created; च (ca) - and; अपरे (apare) - others; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - person; विराट् (virāṭ) - Virāṭ;]
(Many persons, O Brahman, by you created by the self-born; are created and others, O Brahman; he and one person Virāṭ.)
O Brahman, many persons have been created by you, the self-born; and others are also created, O Brahman. But he is the one person, Virāṭ. (12-338-22)
को ह्यसौ चिन्त्यते ब्रह्मंस्त्वया वै पुरुषोत्तमः। एतन्मे संशयं ब्रूहि महत्कौतूहलं हि मे ॥१२-३३८-२३॥
ko hyasau cintyate brahmaṃstvayā vai puruṣottamaḥ। etanme saṃśayaṃ brūhi mahatkautūhalaṃ hi me ॥12-338-23॥
[को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; असौ (asau) - that; चिन्त्यते (cintyate) - is thought upon; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरुषोत्तमः (puruṣottamaḥ) - the supreme person; एतत् (etat) - this; मे (me) - my; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; महत् (mahat) - great; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my;]
(Who indeed is that, O Brahman, who is thought upon by you as the supreme person? This my doubt tell (me); great curiosity indeed (is) mine.)
O Brahman, who indeed is that supreme person whom you contemplate? Please tell me this doubt of mine; I have great curiosity. (12-338-23)

बहवः पुरुषाः पुत्र ये त्वया समुदाहृताः। एवमेतदतिक्रान्तं द्रष्टव्यं नैवमित्यपि ॥ आधारं तु प्रवक्ष्यामि एकस्य पुरुषस्य ते ॥१२-३३८-२४॥
bahavaḥ puruṣāḥ putra ye tvayā samudāhṛtāḥ। evam etad atikrāntaṃ draṣṭavyaṃ naivam ity api ॥ ādhāraṃ tu pravakṣyāmi ekasya puruṣasya te ॥12-338-24॥

(Many men, son, who by you have been enumerated; thus this surpassed should be seen, not thus so also; basis but I shall explain of one man to you; (12-338-24))
Son, the many men you have enumerated—this should be seen as surpassed, not just so; but I shall explain to you the basis of one man. (12-338-24)
बहूनां पुरुषाणां स यथैका योनिरुच्यते। तथा तं पुरुषं विश्वं परमं सुमहत्तमम् ॥ निर्गुणं निर्गुणा भूत्वा प्रविशन्ति सनातनम् ॥१२-३३८-२५॥
bahūnāṃ puruṣāṇāṃ sa yathaikā yonirucyate। tathā taṃ puruṣaṃ viśvaṃ paramaṃ sumahattamam ॥ nirguṇaṃ nirguṇā bhūtvā praviśanti sanātanam ॥12-338-25॥
[बहूनाम् (bahūnām) - of many; पुरुषाणाम् (puruṣāṇām) - of men; सः (saḥ) - he; यथा (yathā) - just as; एकाः (ekā) - one; योनिः (yoniḥ) - source; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; तथा (tathā) - so; तम् (tam) - that; पुरुषम् (puruṣam) - person; विश्वम् (viśvam) - universe; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; सुमहत्तमम् (sumahattamam) - most great; निर्गुणम् (nirguṇam) - without qualities; निर्गुणाः (nirguṇāḥ) - those without qualities; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; सनातनम् (sanātanam) - eternal;]
(Of many men, he, just as one source is said, so that person, the universe, the supreme, the most great. The one without qualities, those without qualities having become, enter the eternal.)
Just as one source is said to be for many men, so that person, the universe, the supreme, the greatest, is the same. Those who have become without qualities enter the eternal one who is without qualities. (12-338-25)
