sāṅkhyaṃ yogaṃ pañcarātraṃ vedāraṇyakam eva ca। jñānāni etāni brahmarṣe lokeṣu pracaranti ha ॥12-337-1॥

किमेतान्येकनिष्ठानि पृथङ्निष्ठानि वा मुने। प्रब्रूहि वै मया पृष्टः प्रवृत्तिं च यथाक्रमम् ॥१२-३३७-२॥
kim etāni eka-niṣṭhāni pṛthak-niṣṭhāni vā mune। prabrūhi vai mayā pṛṣṭaḥ pravṛttiṃ ca yathā-kramam ॥12-337-2॥

jajñe bahujñaṃ paramatyudāraṃ; yaṃ dvīpamadhye sutamātmavantam। parāśarādgandhavatī maharṣiṃ; tasmai namo'jñānatamonudāya ॥12-337-3॥

पितामहाद्यं प्रवदन्ति षष्ठं; महर्षिमार्षेयविभूतियुक्तम्। नारायणस्यांशजमेकपुत्रं; द्वैपायनं वेदमहानिधानम् ॥१२-३३७-४॥

कृत्वा भारतमाख्यानं तपःश्रान्तस्य धीमतः। शुश्रूषां तत्परा राजन्कृतवन्तो वयं तदा ॥१२-३३७-१०॥
kṛtvā bhāratamākhyānaṃ tapaḥśrāntasya dhīmataḥ। śuśrūṣāṃ tatparā rājan kṛtavanto vayaṃ tadā ॥12-337-10॥

वेदानावर्तयन्साङ्गान्भारतार्थांश्च सर्वशः। तमेकमनसं दान्तं युक्ता वयमुपास्महे ॥१२-३३७-१३॥
vedān āvartayan sāṅgān bhāratārthāṁś ca sarvaśaḥ। tam ekamanasaṁ dāntaṁ yuktā vayam upāsmahe ॥12-337-13॥

mama tvaṃ nābhito jātaḥ prajāsargakaraḥ prabhuḥ। sṛja prajāstvaṃ vividhā brahmansajaḍapaṇḍitāḥ ॥12-337-19॥

You, born from my navel, O Brahman, are the lord and creator of beings; create various beings, both dull and wise. (12-337-19)
स एवमुक्तो विमुखश्चिन्ताव्याकुलमानसः। प्रणम्य वरदं देवमुवाच हरिमीश्वरम् ॥१२-३३७-२०॥
sa evam-ukto vimukhaś cintā-vyākula-mānasaḥ। praṇamya varadaṃ devaṃ uvāca harim īśvaram ॥12-337-20॥

(He, thus addressed, with averted face, with mind agitated by thought, having bowed to the boon-giving god, said to Hari, the Lord.)
Thus addressed, he, his mind agitated by worry and turning away, bowed to the boon-giving god and spoke to Hari, the Lord. (12-337-20)
का शक्तिर्मम देवेश प्रजाः स्रष्टुं नमोऽस्तु ते। अप्रज्ञावानहं देव विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥१२-३३७-२१॥
kā śaktir mama deveśa prajāḥ sraṣṭuṃ namo'stu te। aprajñāvān ahaṃ deva vidhatsva yad anantaram ॥12-337-21॥

(What power (is) mine, O lord of the gods, to create beings? Salutation be to you. Unwise I (am), O god, do what is next.)
What power do I have, O lord of the gods, to create beings? Salutations to you. I am unwise, O god; please do what is to be done next. (12-337-21)
स एवमुक्तो भगवान्भूत्वाथान्तर्हितस्ततः। चिन्तयामास देवेशो बुद्धिं बुद्धिमतां वरः ॥१२-३३७-२२॥
sa evam-ukto bhagavān bhūtvā atha antarhitaḥ tataḥ। cintayāmāsa deveśaḥ buddhiṃ buddhimatāṃ varaḥ ॥12-337-22॥
[स (sa) - he; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed one; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; अथ (atha) - then; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - began to think; देवेशः (deveśaḥ) - lord of the gods; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intellect; बुद्धिमतां (buddhimatām) - of the wise; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(He, thus addressed, the blessed one, having become, then, disappeared from there. The lord of the gods, the best of the wise, began to think of intellect.)
Thus addressed, the blessed one disappeared from there. Then the lord of the gods, the best among the wise, began to ponder the matter. (12-337-22)
स्वरूपिणी ततो बुद्धिरुपतस्थे हरिं प्रभुम्। योगेन चैनां निर्योगः स्वयं नियुयुजे तदा ॥१२-३३७-२३॥
svarūpiṇī tato buddhir upatasthe hariṃ prabhum। yogena ca enāṃ niyogaḥ svayaṃ niyuyuje tadā ॥12-337-23॥
[स्वरूपिणी (svarūpiṇī) - having her own form; ततः (tataḥ) - then; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; उपतस्थे (upatasthe) - approached; हरिं (hariṃ) - Hari; प्रभुम् (prabhum) - the Lord; योगेन (yogena) - by union; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; नियोगः (niyogaḥ) - commission; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; नियुयुजे (niyuyuje) - appointed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having her own form, then intellect approached Hari, the Lord. By union and her, commission himself appointed then.)
Then, having assumed her own form, Intellect approached Hari, the Lord. At that time, by union, Niyoga himself appointed her. (12-337-23)
स तामैश्वर्ययोगस्थां बुद्धिं शक्तिमतीं सतीम्। उवाच वचनं देवो बुद्धिं वै प्रभुरव्ययः ॥१२-३३७-२४॥
sa tāmaiśvaryayogasthāṃ buddhiṃ śaktimatīṃ satīm। uvāca vacanaṃ devo buddhiṃ vai prabhuravyayaḥ ॥12-337-24॥

(He, to her abiding in the union with sovereignty, the powerful, virtuous intellect, said a word, the god, the intellect indeed, the imperishable lord.)
He, the imperishable lord, addressed a word to her—the powerful, virtuous intellect established in the union with sovereignty. (12-337-24)
ब्रह्माणं प्रविशस्वेति लोकसृष्ट्यर्थसिद्धये। ततस्तमीश्वरादिष्टा बुद्धिः क्षिप्रं विवेश सा ॥१२-३३७-२५॥
brahmāṇaṃ praviśasveti lokasṛṣṭyarthasiddhaye। tatastamīśvarādiṣṭā buddhiḥ kṣipraṃ viveśa sā ॥12-337-25॥
[ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - Brahmā; (the creator); प्रविश (praviśa) - enter; (imperative); स्व (sva) - your; (own); इति (iti) - thus; (quotation marker); लोक (loka) - world; (universe); सृष्टि (sṛṣṭi) - creation; (act of creating); अर्थ (artha) - for the purpose; (aim); सिद्धये (siddhaye) - for accomplishment; (to achieve); ततः (tataḥ) - then; (after that); तम् (tam) - him; (that one); ईश्वर (īśvara) - Lord; (God); आदिष्टा (ādiṣṭā) - instructed; (ordered); बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; (understanding); क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; (immediately); विवेश (viveśa) - entered; (went into); सा (sā) - she; (that);]
("Enter Brahmā"—for the accomplishment of the purpose of world-creation. Then, the intellect instructed by the Lord quickly entered him. (12-337-25))
For the accomplishment of the purpose of world-creation, the Lord instructed, "Enter Brahmā." Then, that intellect quickly entered him. (12-337-25)
अथैनं बुद्धिसंयुक्तं पुनः स ददृशे हरिः। भूयश्चैनं वचः प्राह सृजेमा विविधाः प्रजाः ॥१२-३३७-२६॥
athainaṃ buddhisaṃyuktaṃ punaḥ sa dadṛśe hariḥ। bhūyaścainaṃ vacaḥ prāha sṛjemā vividhāḥ prajāḥ ॥12-337-26॥
[अथ (atha) - then; एनम् (enam) - him; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; संयुक्तम् (saṃyuktam) - joined; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सः (saḥ) - he; ददृशे (dadṛśe) - saw; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; सृजेम (sṛjemā) - let us create; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures;]
(Then him with intellect joined again he saw Hari. Again and him word spoke: Let us create various creatures.)
Then Hari, seeing him again endowed with intellect, spoke these words once more: "Let us create various kinds of beings." (12-337-26)
एवमुक्त्वा स भगवांस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत। प्राप चैव मुहूर्तेन स्वस्थानं देवसञ्ज्ञितम् ॥१२-३३७-२७॥
evam uktvā sa bhagavāṃs tatraiva antaradhīyata। prāpa caiva muhūrtena svasthānaṃ deva-saṃjñitam ॥12-337-27॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; having said; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; the blessed one; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; just; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; vanished; प्राप (prāpa) - attained; reached; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; just; मुहूर्तेन (muhūrtena) - in a moment; within a short time; स्वस्थानम् (svasthānam) - his own place; his abode; देवसञ्ज्ञितम् (deva-saṃjñitam) - called divine; known as divine;]
(Thus having spoken, he, the venerable one, there indeed disappeared; and indeed, in a moment, attained his own place called divine.)
Having thus spoken, the venerable one disappeared right there; and within a moment, he reached his own abode known as the divine. (12-337-27)
तां चैव प्रकृतिं प्राप्य एकीभावगतोऽभवत्। अथास्य बुद्धिरभवत्पुनरन्या तदा किल ॥१२-३३७-२८॥
tāṃ caiva prakṛtiṃ prāpya ekībhāvagato'bhavat। athāsya buddhirabhavatpunaranyā tadā kila ॥12-337-28॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रकृतिम् (prakṛtim) - nature; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; एकीभावगतः (ekībhāvagataḥ) - having entered into unity; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्या (anyā) - other; तदा (tadā) - then; किल (kila) - indeed;]
(Her and indeed nature having attained, having entered into unity, became. Then his intellect became again other then indeed.)
Having attained her very nature and become united with it, he became one. Then, indeed, at that time, his intellect again became different. (12-337-28)
सृष्टा इमाः प्रजाः सर्वा ब्रह्मणा परमेष्ठिना। दैत्यदानवगन्धर्वरक्षोगणसमाकुलाः ॥ जाता हीयं वसुमती भाराक्रान्ता तपस्विनी ॥१२-३३७-२९॥
sṛṣṭā imāḥ prajāḥ sarvā brahmaṇā parameṣṭhinā। daityadānavagandharvarakṣogaṇasamākulāḥ ॥ jātā hīyaṃ vasumatī bhārākrāntā tapasvinī ॥12-337-29॥
[सृष्टा (sṛṣṭā) - created; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वा (sarvā) - all; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; परमेष्ठिना (parameṣṭhinā) - by the supreme lord; दैत्यदानवगन्धर्वरक्षोगणसमाकुलाः (daityadānavagandharvarakṣogaṇasamākulāḥ) - filled with groups of Daityas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas; जाता (jātā) - was born; हीयं (hīyaṃ) - this; वसुमती (vasumatī) - the earth; भाराक्रान्ता (bhārākrāntā) - oppressed by burden; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - austerely devoted;]
(Created these creatures all by Brahmā, by the supreme lord, filled with groups of Daityas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas; was born this earth, oppressed by burden, austerely devoted. (12-337-29))
All these creatures were created by Brahmā, the supreme lord, and the world became filled with Daityas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas. This earth, thus born, became burdened and devoted to austerity. (12-337-29)
बहवो बलिनः पृथ्व्यां दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः। भविष्यन्ति तपोयुक्ता वरान्प्राप्स्यन्ति चोत्तमान् ॥१२-३३७-३०॥
bahavo balinaḥ pṛthvyāṃ daityadānavarākṣasāḥ। bhaviṣyanti tapoyuktā varānprāpsyanti cottamān ॥12-337-30॥
[बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; बलिनः (balinaḥ) - powerful ones; पृथ्व्यां (pṛthvyām) - on the earth; दैत्यदानवराक्षसाः (daityadānavarākṣasāḥ) - daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will be; तपोयुक्ताः (tapoyuktāḥ) - endowed with austerity; वरान् (varān) - boons; प्राप्स्यन्ति (prāpsyanti) - will obtain; च (ca) - and; उत्तमान् (uttamān) - excellent ones;]
(Many powerful ones on the earth, daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas, will be endowed with austerity; they will obtain boons and excellent ones.)
Many powerful daityas, dānavas, and rākṣasas will arise on earth, endowed with austerity; they will obtain excellent boons. (12-337-30)
अवश्यमेव तैः सर्वैर्वरदानेन दर्पितैः। बाधितव्याः सुरगणा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः ॥ तत्र न्याय्यमिदं कर्तुं भारावतरणं मया ॥१२-३३७-३१॥
avaśyameva taiḥ sarvairvaradānena darpitaiḥ। bādhitavyāḥ suragaṇā ṛṣayaśca tapodhanāḥ ॥ tatra nyāyyamidaṁ kartuṁ bhārāvataraṇaṁ mayā ॥12-337-31॥
[अवश्यम् (avaśyam) - certainly; एव (eva) - indeed; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; वरदानेन (varadānena) - by the boon-giving; दर्पितैः (darpitaiḥ) - arrogant; बाधितव्याः (bādhitavyāḥ) - must be oppressed; सुरगणाः (suragaṇāḥ) - the groups of gods; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; तपोधनाः (tapodhanāḥ) - ascetics; तत्र (tatra) - there; न्याय्यम् (nyāyyam) - just; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; भारावतरणम् (bhārāvataraṇam) - removal of the burden; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Certainly indeed by them, by all, by the boon-giving, arrogant, must be oppressed the groups of gods, sages and ascetics. There, just this to do, removal of the burden by me. (12-337-31))
Certainly, by all those who have become arrogant due to receiving boons, the gods, sages, and ascetics must be oppressed. Therefore, it is just for me to perform this act of removing the burden. (12-337-31)
अथ नानासमुद्भूतैर्वसुधायां यथाक्रमम्। निग्रहेण च पापानां साधूनां प्रग्रहेण च ॥१२-३३७-३२॥
atha nānā-samudbhūtair vasudhāyāṃ yathākramam। nigraheṇa ca pāpānāṃ sādhūnāṃ pragraheṇa ca ॥12-337-32॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; नाना (nānā) - various; many; समुद्भूतैः (samudbhūtaiḥ) - arisen; produced; वसुधायाम् (vasudhāyām) - on the earth; यथाक्रमम् (yathākramam) - in due order; as per sequence; निग्रहेण (nigraheṇa) - by restraint; by suppression; च (ca) - and; पापानाम् (pāpānām) - of the wicked; of the sinful; साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the virtuous; of the good; प्रग्रहेण (pragraheṇa) - by favor; by support; च (ca) - and;]
(Now, by various arisen (means) on the earth in due order, by restraint of the wicked and by favor of the virtuous.)
Then, by various means arising on the earth in due order, by restraining the wicked and supporting the virtuous. (12-337-32)
इमां तपस्विनीं सत्यां धारयिष्यामि मेदिनीम्। मया ह्येषा हि ध्रियते पातालस्थेन भोगिना ॥१२-३३७-३३॥
imāṃ tapasvinīṃ satyāṃ dhārayiṣyāmi medinīm। mayā hyeṣā hi dhriyate pātālasthena bhoginā ॥12-337-33॥
[इमां (imām) - this (feminine accusative singular); तपस्विनीं (tapasvinīm) - ascetic (feminine accusative singular); सत्यां (satyām) - true; real; धारयिष्यामि (dhārayiṣyāmi) - I will support; I will uphold; मेदिनीम् (medinīm) - earth (feminine accusative singular); मया (mayā) - by me; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine nominative singular); हि (hi) - indeed; surely; ध्रियते (dhriyate) - is supported; is upheld; पातालस्थेन (pātālasthena) - by the one dwelling in Pātāla (netherworld); भोगिना (bhoginā) - by the serpent; by the snake;]
(This ascetic, true, I will support the earth. By me indeed this is supported by the serpent dwelling in Pātāla.)
I will uphold this ascetic and true earth. Indeed, it is supported by me, by the serpent dwelling in Pātāla. (12-337-33)
मया धृता धारयति जगद्धि सचराचरम्। तस्मात्पृथ्व्याः परित्राणं करिष्ये सम्भवं गतः ॥१२-३३७-३४॥
mayā dhṛtā dhārayati jagaddhi sacarācaram। tasmāt pṛthvyāḥ paritrāṇaṃ kariṣye sambhavaṃ gataḥ ॥12-337-34॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; धृता (dhṛtā) - held; धारयति (dhārayati) - supports; जगत् (jagat) - the world; हि (hi) - indeed; सचराचरम् (sacarācaram) - with moving and unmoving; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; पृथ्व्याः (pṛthvyāḥ) - of the earth; परित्राणम् (paritrāṇam) - protection; करिष्ये (kariṣye) - I shall do; सम्भवम् (sambhavam) - incarnation; गतः (gataḥ) - gone (to);]
(By me held supports the world indeed with moving and unmoving; therefore of the earth protection I shall do incarnation gone (to).)
The world, with all that moves and does not move, is indeed supported by me; therefore, I have gone to take birth for the protection of the earth. (12-337-34)
एवं स चिन्तयित्वा तु भगवान्मधुसूदनः। रूपाण्यनेकान्यसृजत्प्रादुर्भावभवाय सः ॥१२-३३७-३५॥
evaṁ sa cintayitvā tu bhagavān madhusūdanaḥ। rūpāṇy anekāny asṛjat prādurbhāva-bhavāya saḥ ॥12-337-35॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; स (sa) - he; चिन्तयित्वा (cintayitvā) - having thought; तु (tu) - but; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; अनेकानि (anekāni) - many; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; प्रादुर्भावभवाय (prādurbhāva-bhavāya) - for the arising of manifestations; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Thus he, having thought, but the Lord Madhusūdana, forms many created for the arising of manifestations, he.)
Thus, after contemplating, the Lord Madhusūdana created many forms for the purpose of manifesting appearances. (12-337-35)
वाराहं नारसिंहं च वामनं मानुषं तथा। एभिर्मया निहन्तव्या दुर्विनीताः सुरारयः ॥१२-३३७-३६॥
vārāhaṃ nārasiṃhaṃ ca vāmanaṃ mānuṣaṃ tathā। ebhirmayā nihantavyā durvinītāḥ surārayaḥ ॥12-337-36॥
[वाराहम् (vārāham) - boar; (incarnation form); नारसिंहम् (nārasiṃham) - man-lion; (incarnation form); च (ca) - and; वामनम् (vāmanam) - dwarf; (incarnation form); मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; (incarnation form); तथा (tathā) - also; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; मया (mayā) - by me; निहन्तव्या (nihantavyā) - to be slain; दुर्विनीताः (durvinītāḥ) - ill-behaved; undisciplined; सुरारयः (surārayaḥ) - enemies of the gods;]
(Boar, man-lion, and dwarf, human also; by these by me to be slain ill-behaved enemies of the gods.)
The boar, the man-lion, the dwarf, and also the human form—by these, the ill-behaved enemies of the gods are to be slain by me. (12-337-36)
अथ भूयो जगत्स्रष्टा भोःशब्देनानुनादयन्। सरस्वतीमुच्चचार तत्र सारस्वतोऽभवत् ॥१२-३३७-३७॥
atha bhūyo jagatsraṣṭā bhoḥśabdenānunādayan। sarasvatīm uccacāra tatra sārasvato'bhavat ॥12-337-37॥
[अथ (atha) - then; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; जगत्स्रष्टा (jagatsraṣṭā) - creator of the world; भोःशब्देन (bhoḥśabdena) - with the sound 'bhoḥ'; अनुनादयन् (anunādayan) - resounding; सरस्वतीम् (sarasvatīm) - Sarasvatī; उच्चचार (uccacāra) - uttered; तत्र (tatra) - there; सारस्वतः (sārasvataḥ) - Sārasvata; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Then again, the creator of the world, resounding with the sound 'bhoḥ', uttered Sarasvatī there; Sārasvata became.)
Then, once again, the creator of the world resounded the sound 'bhoḥ' and uttered Sarasvatī there; thus, Sārasvata came into being. (12-337-37)
अपान्तरतमा नाम सुतो वाक्सम्भवो विभोः। भूतभव्यभविष्यज्ञः सत्यवादी दृढव्रतः ॥१२-३३७-३८॥
apāntaratamā nāma suto vāksam-bhavo vibhoḥ। bhūta-bhavya-bhaviṣya-jñaḥ satyavādī dṛḍhavrataḥ ॥12-337-38॥
[अपान्तरतमा (apāntaratamā) - name of a sage; नाम (nāma) - by name; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; वाक् (vāk) - speech; सम्भवः (sambhavaḥ) - born from; विभोः (vibhoḥ) - of the lord; भूत (bhūta) - past; भव्य (bhavya) - future; भविष्य (bhaviṣya) - to come; ज्ञः (jñaḥ) - knower; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; दृढव्रतः (dṛḍhavrataḥ) - firm in vow;]
(Apāntaratamā by name, son, born from speech of the lord, knower of past, future, and to come, speaker of truth, firm in vow.)
There was a sage named Apāntaratamā, the son born from the speech of the Lord, who knew the past, future, and what is to come, who spoke the truth and was firm in his vows. (12-337-38)
तमुवाच नतं मूर्ध्ना देवानामादिरव्ययः। वेदाख्याने श्रुतिः कार्या त्वया मतिमतां वर ॥ तस्मात्कुरु यथाज्ञप्तं मयैतद्वचनं मुने ॥१२-३३७-३९॥
tam uvāca nataṃ mūrdhnā devānām ādir avyayaḥ। vedākhyāne śrutiḥ kāryā tvayā matimatāṃ vara ॥ tasmāt kuru yathājñaptaṃ mayaitad vacanaṃ mune ॥12-337-39॥

(Him said bowed with (his) head, of the gods the beginning imperishable. In the exposition of the Veda, the Veda should be done by you, best of the wise. Therefore, do as commanded by me this speech, O sage. (12-337-39))
The imperishable origin of the gods, having bowed his head, said to him: In the exposition of the Veda, the Veda should be followed by you, O best of the wise. Therefore, O sage, do as I have instructed in this speech. (12-337-39)
तेन भिन्नास्तदा वेदा मनोः स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे। ततस्तुतोष भगवान्हरिस्तेनास्य कर्मणा ॥ तपसा च सुतप्तेन यमेन नियमेन च ॥१२-३३७-४०॥
tena bhinnās tadā vedā manoḥ svāyambhuve'ntare। tatas tutoṣa bhagavān haris tenāsya karmaṇā ॥ tapasā ca sutaptena yamena niyamena ca ॥12-337-40॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; भिन्नाः (bhinnāḥ) - divided; तदा (tadā) - then; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; मनोः (manoḥ) - of Manu; स्वायम्भुवे (svāyambhuve) - in the Svāyambhuva (Manvantara); अन्तरे (antare) - interval; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तुतोष (tutoṣa) - became pleased; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; तेन (tena) - by him; अस्य (asya) - his; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the act; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; सुतप्तेन (sutaptena) - well-performed (austerity); यमेन (yamena) - by restraint; नियमेन (niyamena) - by observance; च (ca) - and;]
(By him, the Vedas were divided then in the interval of Manu Svāyambhuva; then the Lord Hari became pleased by him by this act, by austerity and by well-performed austerity, by restraint and by observance and.)
At that time, during the interval of Svāyambhuva Manu, the Vedas were divided by him; then Lord Hari was pleased with him for this act, as well as for his austerity, well-performed penance, self-restraint, and observances. (12-337-40)

manvantareṣu putra tvam evaṃ lokapravartakaḥ। bhaviṣyasy acalo brahman apradhṛṣyaś ca nityaśaḥ ॥12-337-41॥
[मन्वन्तरेषु (manvantareṣu) - in the manvantaras; पुत्र (putra) - O son; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; लोकप्रवर्तकः (lokapravartakaḥ) - initiator of the world; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; अचलः (acalaḥ) - unmoving; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; अप्रधृष्यः (apradhṛṣyaḥ) - unassailable; च (ca) - and; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - eternally;]
(In the manvantaras, O son, you thus (will be) the initiator of the world; you will become unmoving, O Brahman, unassailable and eternally.)

पुनस्तिष्ये च सम्प्राप्ते कुरवो नाम भारताः। भविष्यन्ति महात्मानो राजानः प्रथिता भुवि ॥१२-३३७-४२॥
punastiṣye ca samprāpte kuravo nāma bhāratāḥ। bhaviṣyanti mahātmāno rājānaḥ prathitā bhuvi ॥12-337-42॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तिष्ये (tiṣye) - in the Tiṣya (Pushya) (nakṣatra); च (ca) - and; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; कुरवः (kuravaḥ) - Kurus; नाम (nāma) - named; भारताः (bhāratāḥ) - descendants of Bharata; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; प्रथिताः (prathitāḥ) - renowned; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Again, when the Tiṣya (Pushya) (nakṣatra) arrives, the Kurus named Bharatas will become great-souled, renowned kings on earth.)
Again, when the Tiṣya (Pushya) constellation arrives, the Kurus called Bharatas will become great and renowned kings on earth. (12-337-42)
तेषां त्वत्तः प्रसूतानां कुलभेदो भविष्यति। परस्परविनाशार्थं त्वामृते द्विजसत्तम ॥१२-३३७-४३॥
teṣāṃ tvattaḥ prasūtānāṃ kulabhedo bhaviṣyati। parasparavināśārthaṃ tvāmṛte dvijasattama ॥12-337-43॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; प्रसूतानां (prasūtānāṃ) - of those born; कुलभेदः (kulabhedaḥ) - division of families; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; परस्परविनाशार्थम् (parasparavināśārtham) - for the purpose of mutual destruction; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; ऋते (ṛte) - except; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of the twice-born;]
(Of them, from you, of those born, division of families will be. For the purpose of mutual destruction, except you, O best of the twice-born. (12-337-43))
Among those born from you, there will be division of families. Except for you, O best of the twice-born, it will be for the purpose of mutual destruction. (12-337-43)
तत्राप्यनेकधा वेदान्भेत्स्यसे तपसान्वितः। कृष्णे युगे च सम्प्राप्ते कृष्णवर्णो भविष्यसि ॥१२-३३७-४४॥
tatrāpy anekadhā vedān bhetsyase tapasānvitaḥ। kṛṣṇe yuge ca samprāpte kṛṣṇavarṇo bhaviṣyasi ॥12-337-44॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; at that place; अपि (api) - also; even; अनेकधा (anekadhā) - in many ways; manifoldly; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; sacred knowledges; भेत्स्यसे (bhetsyase) - you will break; you will divide; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; by penance; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed; possessed; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in the dark; in Kṛṣṇa (the dark one); युगे (yuge) - in the age; in the yuga; च (ca) - and; सम्प्राप्ते (samprāpte) - having arrived; having come; कृष्णवर्णः (kṛṣṇavarṇaḥ) - of dark complexion; dark-colored; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; you will be;]
(There also, in many ways, the Vedas you will break, endowed with austerity; when the dark age arrives, you will become of dark complexion.)
There, too, you will divide the Vedas in many ways, being endowed with austerity; and when the Kṛṣṇa (dark) age arrives, you will become dark-complexioned. (12-337-44)
धर्माणां विविधानां च कर्ता ज्ञानकरस्तथा। भविष्यसि तपोयुक्तो न च रागाद्विमोक्ष्यसे ॥१२-३३७-४५॥
dharmāṇāṃ vividhānāṃ ca kartā jñānakaras tathā। bhaviṣyasi tapoyukto na ca rāgād vimokṣyase ॥12-337-45॥
[धर्माणां (dharmāṇām) - of dharmas; (of) duties; विविधानां (vividhānām) - of various; of manifold; च (ca) - and; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; maker; ज्ञानकरः (jñānakaraḥ) - giver of knowledge; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in that way; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; तपःयुक्तः (tapo-yuktaḥ) - endowed with austerity; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रागात् (rāgāt) - from attachment; विमोक्ष्यसे (vimokṣyase) - you will be freed;]
(Of dharmas of various and doer giver of knowledge likewise; you will become endowed with austerity not and from attachment you will be freed;)
You will become the doer of various dharmas and a giver of knowledge likewise; endowed with austerity, you will not be freed from attachment. (12-337-45)
वीतरागश्च पुत्रस्ते परमात्मा भविष्यति। महेश्वरप्रसादेन नैतद्वचनमन्यथा ॥१२-३३७-४६॥
vītarāgaś ca putras te paramātmā bhaviṣyati। maheśvaraprasādena naitad vacanam anyathā ॥12-337-46॥
[वीतरागः (vītarāgaḥ) - one who is free from passion; च (ca) - and; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; परमात्मा (paramātmā) - supreme self; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; महेश्वरप्रसादेन (maheśvaraprasādena) - by the grace of Maheśvara; न (na) - not; एतद्वचनम् (etad vacanam) - this statement; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(One who is free from passion and your son, the supreme self, will be; by the grace of Maheśvara, not this statement otherwise (12-337-46))
Your son, who is free from passion, will become the supreme self; by the grace of Maheśvara, this statement will not be otherwise. (12-337-46)
यं मानसं वै प्रवदन्ति पुत्रं; पितामहस्योत्तमबुद्धियुक्तम्। वसिष्ठमग्र्यं तपसो निधानं; यश्चापि सूर्यं व्यतिरिच्य भाति ॥१२-३३७-४७॥
yaṃ mānasaṃ vai pravadanti putraṃ; pitāmahasyottamabuddhiyuktam। vasiṣṭhamagryaṃ tapaso nidhānaṃ; yaścāpi sūryaṃ vyatiricya bhāti ॥12-337-47॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - of the mind; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they call; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; पितामहस्य (pitāmahasya) - of the grandsire; उत्तमबुद्धियुक्तम् (uttamabuddhiyuktam) - endowed with highest wisdom; वसिष्ठम् (vasiṣṭham) - Vasiṣṭha; अग्र्यं (agryaṃ) - foremost; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; निधानं (nidhānaṃ) - repository; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सूर्यं (sūryaṃ) - the sun; व्यतिरिच्य (vyatiricya) - surpassing; भाति (bhāti) - shines;]
(Whom indeed they call the son of the mind, endowed with the highest wisdom of the grandsire; Vasiṣṭha, the foremost repository of austerity; who also shines surpassing the sun.)
He whom they call the mind-born son, endowed with the supreme wisdom of the grandsire—Vasiṣṭha, foremost and repository of austerity—who also shines surpassing even the sun. (12-337-47)
तस्यान्वये चापि ततो महर्षिः; पराशरो नाम महाप्रभावः। पिता स ते वेदनिधिर्वरिष्ठो; महातपा वै तपसो निवासः ॥ कानीनगर्भः पितृकन्यकायां; तस्मादृषेस्त्वं भविता च पुत्रः ॥१२-३३७-४८॥
tasyānvaye cāpi tato maharṣiḥ; parāśaro nāma mahāprabhāvaḥ। pitā sa te vedanidhirvariṣṭho; mahātapā vai tapaso nivāsaḥ ॥ kānīnagarbhaḥ pitṛkanyakāyāṃ; tasmādṛṣestvaṃ bhavitā ca putraḥ ॥12-337-48॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अन्वये (anvaye) - in the lineage; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ततः (tataḥ) - from him; महर्षिः (maharṣiḥ) - great sage; पराशरः (parāśaraḥ) - Parāśara; नाम (nāma) - named; महाप्रभावः (mahāprabhāvaḥ) - of great power; पिता (pitā) - father; स (sa) - he; ते (te) - your; वेदनिधिः (vedanidhiḥ) - treasure of the Vedas; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the most excellent; महातपा (mahātapā) - of great austerity; वै (vai) - indeed; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; निवासः (nivāsaḥ) - abode; कानीनगर्भः (kānīnagarbhaḥ) - born in the womb of an unmarried girl; पितृकन्यकायां (pitṛkanyakāyāṃ) - in the daughter of the father; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - of the sage; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; च (ca) - and; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son;]
(Of him in the lineage and also from him, the great sage Parāśara named, of great power; father he your, treasure of the Vedas, the most excellent; of great austerity indeed, abode of austerity. Born in the womb of an unmarried girl, in the daughter of the father; from that sage, you will be also son.)
In his lineage, from him, there was the great sage named Parāśara, of great power; he, your father, was the most excellent treasure of the Vedas, and of great austerity, truly an abode of penance. Born in the womb of an unmarried girl, in the daughter of the father; from that sage, you too will be born as a son. (12-337-48)
भूतभव्यभविष्याणां छिन्नसर्वार्थसंशयः। ये ह्यतिक्रान्तकाः पूर्वं सहस्रयुगपर्ययाः ॥१२-३३७-४९॥
bhūtabhavyabhaviṣyāṇāṃ chinnasarvārthasaṃśayaḥ। ye hyatikrāntakāḥ pūrvaṃ sahasrayugaparyayāḥ ॥12-337-49॥
[भूत (bhūta) - past; भव्य (bhavya) - future; भविष्याणां (bhaviṣyāṇāṃ) - of those who will be (future beings); छिन्न (chinna) - cut off; सर्व (sarva) - all; अर्थ (artha) - meanings; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; ये (ye) - those who; हि (hi) - indeed; अतिक्रान्तकाः (atikrāntakāḥ) - those who have passed beyond; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; युग (yuga) - ages; पर्ययाः (paryayāḥ) - cycles;]
(Of the past, future, and those who will be, whose all doubts of meaning are cut off; those indeed who have passed beyond before, (are) the cycles of a thousand ages.)
Those of the past, future, and those yet to come, whose every doubt about all meanings has been dispelled; those who have indeed transcended before, are the cycles of a thousand ages. (12-337-49)
तांश्च सर्वान्मयोद्दिष्टान्द्रक्ष्यसे तपसान्वितः। पुनर्द्रक्ष्यसि चानेकसहस्रयुगपर्ययान् ॥१२-३३७-५०॥
tāṁś ca sarvān mayoddiṣṭān drakṣyase tapasānvitaḥ। punar drakṣyasi ca aneka-sahasra-yuga-paryayān ॥12-337-50॥
[तांश् (tāṁś) - those (persons); च (ca) - and; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; मया (mayā) - by me; उद्दिष्टान् (uddiṣṭān) - indicated; द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - you will see; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed; पुनः (punar) - again; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; च (ca) - and; अनेक (aneka) - many; सहस्र (sahasra) - thousand; युग (yuga) - age; पर्ययान् (paryayān) - cycles;]
(Those and all indicated by me you will see, endowed with austerity; again you will see also many thousand age cycles.)
You will see all those whom I have indicated, endowed with austerity; and again, you will see many cycles of thousands of ages. (12-337-50)
अनादिनिधनं लोके चक्रहस्तं च मां मुने। अनुध्यानान्मम मुने नैतद्वचनमन्यथा ॥१२-३३७-५१॥
anādinidhanaṃ loke cakrahastaṃ ca māṃ mune| anudhyānān mama mune naitad vacanam anyathā ॥12-337-51॥
[अनादिनिधनम् (anādinidhanam) - without beginning and end; लोके (loke) - in the world; चक्रहस्तम् (cakrahastam) - having the discus in hand; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; मुने (mune) - O sage; अनुध्यानात् (anudhyānāt) - by constant meditation; मम (mama) - of me; मुने (mune) - O sage; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - statement; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Without beginning and end in the world, having the discus in hand, and me, O sage, by constant meditation on me, O sage, this statement is not otherwise.)
O sage, I am the one without beginning or end in the world, holding the discus in my hand. By constant meditation on me, O sage, this statement does not become otherwise. (12-337-51)
शनैश्चरः सूर्यपुत्रो भविष्यति मनुर्महान्। तस्मिन्मन्वन्तरे चैव सप्तर्षिगणपूर्वकः ॥ त्वमेव भविता वत्स मत्प्रसादान्न संशयः ॥१२-३३७-५२॥
śanaiścaraḥ sūryaputro bhaviṣyati manur mahān। tasmin manvantare caiva saptaṛṣigaṇapūrvakaḥ ॥ tvam eva bhavitā vatsa matprasādān na saṃśayaḥ ॥12-337-52॥
[शनैश्चरः (śanaiścaraḥ) - slow-mover; Saturn; सूर्यपुत्रः (sūryaputraḥ) - son of the Sun; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; progenitor; महान् (mahān) - great; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; मन्वन्तरे (manvantare) - Manvantara; period of Manu; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सप्तर्षिगणपूर्वकः (saptaṛṣigaṇapūrvakaḥ) - preceded by the group of seven sages; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; वत्स (vatsa) - child; मत्प्रसादात् (matprasādāt) - by my grace; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Saturn, son of the Sun, will be; Manu, great. In that Manvantara, indeed, preceded by the group of seven sages. You indeed will be, child, by my grace; not doubt. (12-337-52))
Saturn, the son of the Sun, will become the great Manu. In that Manvantara, together with the group of seven sages, you too will be, my child, by my grace; there is no doubt about this. (12-337-52)

evaṃ sārasvatam ṛṣim apāntaratamaṃ tadā। uktvā vacanam īśānaḥ sādhayasva iti atha abravīt ॥12-337-53॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सारस्वतम् (sārasvatam) - of Sarasvatī; (or) pertaining to Sarasvatī; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; अपान्तरतमम् (apāntaratamam) - Apāntaratama (name of a sage); तदा (tadā) - then; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; ईशानः (īśānaḥ) - the Lord; साधयस्व (sādhayasva) - accomplish; इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus, to the Sarasvatī sage Apāntaratama then, having spoken the word, the Lord "Accomplish thus" then said.)
Thus, at that time, the Lord spoke to the Sarasvatī sage Apāntaratama, saying, "Accomplish this," and then spoke thus. (12-337-53)
सोऽहं तस्य प्रसादेन देवस्य हरिमेधसः। अपान्तरतमा नाम ततो जातोऽऽज्ञया हरेः ॥ पुनश्च जातो विख्यातो वसिष्ठकुलनन्दनः ॥१२-३३७-५४॥
so'ham tasya prasādena devasya harimedhasaḥ। apāntaratamā nāma tato jāto''jñayā hareḥ ॥ punaśca jāto vikhyāto vasiṣṭhakulanandanaḥ ॥12-337-54॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; तस्य (tasya) - of him; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by the grace; देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; हरिमेधसः (harimedhasaḥ) - of Hari-minded (one whose intellect is Hari); अपान्तरतमा (apāntaratamā) - Apāntaratamā (name); नाम (nāma) - named; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; आज्ञया (ājñayā) - by the command; हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; विख्यातः (vikhyātaḥ) - well-known; वसिष्ठकुलनन्दनः (vasiṣṭhakulanandanaḥ) - delight of the family of Vasiṣṭha;]
(He I by the grace of him of the god of Hari-minded Apāntaratamā named then born by the command of Hari. Again and born well-known delight of the family of Vasiṣṭha. (12-337-54))

तदेतत्कथितं जन्म मया पूर्वकमात्मनः। नारायणप्रसादेन तथा नारायणांशजम् ॥१२-३३७-५५॥
tadetatkathitaṃ janma mayā pūrVakamātmanaḥ। nārāyaṇaprasādena tathā nārāyaṇāṃśajam ॥12-337-55॥
[तत् (tat) - that; एतत् (etat) - this; कथितं (kathitam) - told; जन्म (janma) - birth; मया (mayā) - by me; पूर्वकम् (pūrvakam) - former; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of self; नारायणप्रसादेन (nārāyaṇaprasādena) - by the grace of Nārāyaṇa; तथा (tathā) - also; नारायणांशजम् (nārāyaṇāṃśajam) - born from a portion of Nārāyaṇa;]
(That this told birth by me former of self by the grace of Nārāyaṇa also born from a portion of Nārāyaṇa.)
Thus, I have described this former birth of myself, which occurred by the grace of Nārāyaṇa and also as one born from a portion of Nārāyaṇa. (12-337-55)
मया हि सुमहत्तप्तं तपः परमदारुणम्। पुरा मतिमतां श्रेष्ठाः परमेण समाधिना ॥१२-३३७-५६॥
mayā hi sumahattaptaṃ tapaḥ paramadāruṇam। purā matimatāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ parameṇa samādhinā ॥12-337-56॥

(By me indeed very greatly practiced austerity extremely severe; formerly of the intelligent the best by the highest concentration.)
Indeed, I practiced extremely severe austerity in the past, being the best among the intelligent, with the highest concentration. (12-337-56)
एतद्वः कथितं सर्वं यन्मां पृच्छथ पुत्रकाः। पूर्वजन्म भविष्यं च भक्तानां स्नेहतो मया ॥१२-३३७-५७॥

(This to you told all which me you ask O sons; former birth future and of devotees out of affection by me.)
O sons, all this which you ask me about, regarding the former birth and the future of the devotees, has been told to you by me out of affection. (12-337-57)

(This to you told before origin of our teacher O king. Of Vyāsa of untroubled mind as asked again hear.)
O king, the origin of our teacher has already been told to you before. Now, as you have asked about Vyāsa, who has an untroubled mind, hear it again. (12-337-58)
साङ्ख्यं योगं पञ्चरात्रं वेदाः पाशुपतं तथा। ज्ञानान्येतानि राजर्षे विद्धि नानामतानि वै ॥१२-३३७-५९॥
sāṅkhyaṃ yogaṃ pañcarātraṃ vedāḥ pāśupataṃ tathā। jñānānyetāni rājarṣe viddhi nānāmatāni vai ॥12-337-59॥

O royal sage, know that Sāṅkhya, Yoga, Pañcarātra, the Vedas, and the Pāśupata doctrine—these knowledges are indeed various opinions. (12-337-59)
साङ्ख्यस्य वक्ता कपिलः परमर्षिः स उच्यते। हिरण्यगर्भो योगस्य वेत्ता नान्यः पुरातनः ॥१२-३३७-६०॥
sāṅkhyasya vaktā kapilaḥ paramarṣiḥ sa ucyate। hiraṇyagarbho yogasya vettā nānyaḥ purātanaḥ ॥12-337-60॥
[साङ्ख्यस्य (sāṅkhyasya) - of Sāṅkhya; (the philosophical system); वक्ता (vaktā) - speaker; expounder; कपिलः (kapilaḥ) - Kapila; (sage Kapila); परमर्षिः (paramarṣiḥ) - supreme sage; स (sa) - he; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; हिरण्यगर्भः (hiraṇyagarbhaḥ) - Hiraṇyagarbha; (the golden-embryo, Brahmā); योगस्य (yogasya) - of Yoga; (the discipline of Yoga); वेत्ता (vettā) - knower; one who knows; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; another; पुरातनः (purātanaḥ) - ancient; old;]
(Of Sāṅkhya the speaker Kapila, supreme sage, he is called. Hiraṇyagarbha of Yoga the knower, not other ancient.)
Kapila, the supreme sage, is called the expounder of Sāṅkhya. Hiraṇyagarbha is known as the knower of Yoga; there is no other ancient one. (12-337-60)
अपान्तरतमाश्चैव वेदाचार्यः स उच्यते। प्राचीनगर्भं तमृषिं प्रवदन्तीह केचन ॥१२-३३७-६१॥
apāntaratamāś caiva vedācāryaḥ sa ucyate। prācīnagarbhaṃ tam ṛṣiṃ pravadantīha kecana ॥12-337-61॥
[अपान्तरतमाः (apāntaratamāḥ) - those whose darkness is removed; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वेदाचार्यः (vedācāryaḥ) - teacher of the Veda; सः (saḥ) - he; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; प्राचीनगर्भम् (prācīnagarbham) - Prācīnagarbha; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they call; इह (iha) - here; केचन (kecana) - some;]
(Those whose darkness is removed, and indeed the teacher of the Veda, he is called. Prācīnagarbha, him, the sage, some here call.)
He whose darkness is dispelled, who is indeed the teacher of the Veda, is called thus. Some here refer to that sage as Prācīnagarbha. (12-337-61)
उमापतिर्भूतपतिः श्रीकण्ठो ब्रह्मणः सुतः। उक्तवानिदमव्यग्रो ज्ञानं पाशुपतं शिवः ॥१२-३३७-६२॥
umāpatir bhūtapatiḥ śrīkaṇṭho brahmaṇaḥ sutaḥ। uktavān idam avyagraḥ jñānaṃ pāśupataṃ śivaḥ ॥12-337-62॥
[उमापतिः (umā-patiḥ) - consort of Umā; lord; भूतपतिः (bhūta-patiḥ) - lord of beings; श्रीकण्ठः (śrī-kaṇṭhaḥ) - auspicious-throated; ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; उक्तवान् (uktavān) - has spoken; इदम् (idam) - this; अव्यग्रह् (avyagraḥ) - unperturbed; ज्ञानम् (jñānam) - knowledge; पाशुपतम् (pāśupatam) - relating to Paśupati; शिवः (śivaḥ) - Śiva;]

(Of the Pañcarātra (scripture), of the whole, the knower but indeed the Lord himself. In all, and O best of kings, in the knowledges, in these, is seen. (12-337-63))
O best of kings, the Lord himself is indeed the knower of the entire Pañcarātra scripture; in all these knowledges, He is seen. (12-337-63)
यथागमं यथाज्ञानं निष्ठा नारायणः प्रभुः। न चैनमेवं जानन्ति तमोभूता विशां पते ॥१२-३३७-६४॥
yathāgamaṃ yathājñānaṃ niṣṭhā nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ। na ca inam evaṃ jānanti tamobhūtā viśāṃ pate ॥12-337-64॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; अगमं (agamaṃ) - scripture; यथा (yathā) - as; ज्ञानं (jñānaṃ) - knowledge; निष्ठा (niṣṭhā) - steadfastness; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; तमोभूताः (tamobhūtāḥ) - those who are of darkness; विशां (viśām) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(As scripture, as knowledge, steadfastness, Nārāyaṇa, lord; not and him thus know those who are of darkness, of men, O lord.)
O lord of men, as per scripture and as per knowledge, steadfastness is Nārāyaṇa, the lord; but those who are of darkness do not know him thus. (12-337-64)
तमेव शास्त्रकर्तारं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः। निष्ठां नारायणमृषिं नान्योऽस्तीति च वादिनः ॥१२-३३७-६५॥
tameva śāstrakartāraṃ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ। niṣṭhāṃ nārāyaṇam ṛṣiṃ nānyo'stīti ca vādinaḥ ॥12-337-65॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - indeed; शास्त्रकर्तारम् (śāstrakartāram) - the maker of śāstra; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - declare; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise; निष्ठाम् (niṣṭhām) - the goal; नारायणम् (nārāyaṇam) - Nārāyaṇa; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; अस्ति (asti) - is; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; वादिनः (vādinaḥ) - those who speak;]
(Him indeed as the maker of śāstra declare the wise; the goal Nārāyaṇa sage not other is thus and those who speak.)
The wise declare him alone as the maker of the śāstra; those who speak say that the sage Nārāyaṇa is the goal, and there is no other. (12-337-65)
निःसंशयेषु सर्वेषु नित्यं वसति वै हरिः। ससंशयान्हेतुबलान्नाध्यावसति माधवः ॥१२-३३७-६६॥
niḥsaṃśayeṣu sarveṣu nityaṃ vasati vai hariḥ। sasaṃśayān hetubalān nādhyāvasati mādhavaḥ ॥12-337-66॥
[निःसंशयेषु (niḥsaṃśayeṣu) - in those without doubt; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; वसति (vasati) - dwells; वै (vai) - indeed; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; ससंशयान् (sasaṃśayān) - those with doubt; हेतुबलात् (hetubalāt) - because of the force of reason; न (na) - not; अध्यावसति (adhyāvasati) - abides; माधवः (mādhavaḥ) - Mādhava;]
(In those without doubt, in all, always dwells indeed Hari; those with doubt, because of the force of reason, does not abide Mādhava;)
Hari always dwells in all who are without doubt; Mādhava does not abide in those with doubt, due to the force of reasoning. (12-337-66)
पञ्चरात्रविदो ये तु यथाक्रमपरा नृप। एकान्तभावोपगतास्ते हरिं प्रविशन्ति वै ॥१२-३३७-६७॥
pañcarātravido ye tu yathākramaparā nṛpa। ekāntabhāvopagatās te hariṃ praviśanti vai ॥12-337-67॥
[पञ्चरात्रविदः (pañcarātravidaḥ) - knowers of the Pañcarātra; ये (ye) - who; तु (tu) - but; यथाक्रमपरा (yathākramaparāḥ) - engaged in proper order; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; एकान्तभावोपगताः (ekāntabhāvopagatāḥ) - attained to single-minded devotion; ते (te) - they; हरिम् (hariṃ) - Hari (Viṣṇu); प्रविशन्ति (praviśanti) - enter; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(The knowers of the Pañcarātra who, but, engaged in proper order, O king, attained to single-minded devotion, they indeed enter Hari.)
O king, those who know the Pañcarātra and are devoted to its proper practice, having attained single-minded devotion, they indeed enter into Hari (Viṣṇu). (12-337-67)
साङ्ख्यं च योगं च सनातने द्वे; वेदाश्च सर्वे निखिलेन राजन्। सर्वैः समस्तैरृषिभिर्निरुक्तो; नारायणो विश्वमिदं पुराणम् ॥१२-३३७-६८॥
sāṅkhyaṃ ca yogaṃ ca sanātane dve; vedāś ca sarve nikhilena rājan। sarvaiḥ samastair ṛṣibhir nirukto; nārāyaṇo viśvam idaṃ purāṇam ॥12-337-68॥
[साङ्ख्यं (sāṅkhyaṃ) - enumerative knowledge; च (ca) - and; योगं (yogaṃ) - union; च (ca) - and; सनातने (sanātane) - eternal; द्वे (dve) - two; वेदाः (vedāḥ) - Vedas; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; निखिलेन (nikhilena) - entirely; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; समस्तैः (samastaiḥ) - by the complete; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; निरुक्तः (niruktaḥ) - explained; नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; विश्वम् (viśvam) - universe; इदं (idaṃ) - this; पुराणम् (purāṇam) - ancient;]
(Enumerative knowledge and union, both eternal; and all the Vedas entirely, O king. By all the complete sages explained, Nārāyaṇa (is) this universe, the ancient.)
Both Sāṅkhya and Yoga are eternal; and all the Vedas in their entirety, O king, have been explained by all the great sages as Nārāyaṇa, this universe, the ancient one. (12-337-68)
शुभाशुभं कर्म समीरितं य; त्प्रवर्तते सर्वलोकेषु किञ्चित्। तस्मादृषेस्तद्भवतीति विद्या; द्दिव्यन्तरिक्षे भुवि चाप्सु चापि ॥१२-३३७-६९॥
śubhāśubhaṃ karma samīritaṃ ya; tpravartate sarvalokeṣu kiñcit. tasmādṛṣestadbhavatīti vidyā; ddivyantarikṣe bhuvi cāpsu cāpi ॥12-337-69॥
[शुभाशुभं (śubhāśubham) - auspicious-inauspicious; कर्म (karma) - action; समीरितं (samīritam) - set in motion; यत् (yat) - which; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - proceeds; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ऋषेः (ṛṣeḥ) - from the seer; तत् (tat) - that; भवतीति (bhavatīti) - becomes thus; विद्यात् (vidyāt) - one should know; दिव्य (divya) - in the divine; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; च (ca) - and; अप्सु (apsu) - in the waters; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also;]
(Auspicious-inauspicious action set in motion, which proceeds in all worlds, anything; therefore, from the seer, that becomes thus, one should know; in the divine, in the sky, on earth, and in the waters and also.)
Any auspicious or inauspicious action that is set in motion, whatever proceeds in all worlds, should be known as originating from the seer; thus it manifests in the divine, in the sky, on earth, and also in the waters. (12-337-69)
