Bhishma said.
स चामन्त्र्योरगश्रेष्ठं ब्राह्मणः कृतनिश्चयः। दीक्षाकाङ्क्षी तदा राजंश्च्यवनं भार्गवं श्रितः ॥१२-३५३-१॥
sa cāmantryoragaśreṣṭhaṃ brāhmaṇaḥ kṛtaniścayaḥ। dīkṣākāṅkṣī tadā rājaṃścyavanaṃ bhārgavaṃ śritaḥ ॥12-353-1॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; उरगश्रेष्ठम् (uragaśreṣṭham) - the best of serpents; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; कृतनिश्चयः (kṛtaniścayaḥ) - having made a decision; दीक्षाकाङ्क्षी (dīkṣākāṅkṣī) - desiring initiation; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; च्यवनम् (cyavanam) - Cyavana; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - descendant of Bhṛgu; श्रितः (śritaḥ) - having approached;]
(He and having addressed the best of serpents, the brāhmaṇa, having made a decision, desiring initiation, then, O king, Cyavana, descendant of Bhṛgu, having approached.)
He, having addressed the best of serpents, the brāhmaṇa, having firmly resolved and desiring initiation, then, O king, approached Cyavana, the descendant of Bhṛgu. (12-353-1)
स तेन कृतसंस्कारो धर्ममेवोपतस्थिवान्। तथैव च कथामेतां राजन्कथितवांस्तदा ॥१२-३५३-२॥
sa tena kṛtasaṃskāro dharmamevopatasthivān। tathaiva ca kathāmetāṃ rājankathitavāṃstadā ॥12-353-2॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; कृतसंस्कारः (kṛtasaṃskāraḥ) - having performed the rites; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; एव (eva) - indeed; उपतस्थिवान् (upatasthivān) - approached; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; कथाम् (kathām) - story; एताम् (etām) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कथितवान् (kathitavān) - told; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, having performed the rites by him, indeed approached dharma. In the same way and this story, O king, told then.)
Having performed the rites, he approached dharma. In the same way, O king, he told this story at that time. (12-353-2)
भार्गवेणापि राजेन्द्र जनकस्य निवेशने। कथैषा कथिता पुण्या नारदाय महात्मने ॥१२-३५३-३॥
bhārgaveṇāpi rājendra janakasya niveśane। kathaiṣā kathitā puṇyā nāradāya mahātmane ॥12-353-3॥
[भार्गवेणापि (bhārgaveṇa api) - by Bhārgava; also; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; जनकस्य (janakasya) - of Janaka; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the residence; कथा (kathā) - the story; एषा (eṣā) - this; कथिता (kathitā) - was told; पुण्या (puṇyā) - auspicious; नारदाय (nāradāya) - to Nārada; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled;]
(By Bhārgava also, O king, in the residence of Janaka, this auspicious story was told to Nārada, the great-souled.)
O king, this auspicious story was also told by Bhārgava to the great-souled Nārada in the residence of Janaka. (12-353-3)
नारदेनापि राजेन्द्र देवेन्द्रस्य निवेशने। कथिता भरतश्रेष्ठ पृष्टेनाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥१२-३५३-४॥
nāradenāpi rājendra devendrasya niveśane। kathitā bharataśreṣṭha pṛṣṭenākliṣṭakarmaṇā ॥12-353-4॥
[नारदेन (nāradena) - by Nārada; अपि (api) - also; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; देवेन्द्रस्य (devendrasya) - of Indra; निवेशने (niveśane) - in the abode; कथिता (kathitā) - were told; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; पृष्टेन (pṛṣṭena) - when asked; अक्लिष्टकर्मणा (akliṣṭakarmaṇā) - by one whose actions are unwearied;]
(By Nārada also, O king, in the abode of Indra, were told, O best of the Bharatas, when asked by one whose actions are unwearied.)
O best of the Bharatas, these were also told by Nārada in Indra's abode, O king, when asked by one whose actions are unwearied. (12-353-4)
देवराजेन च पुरा कथैषा कथिता शुभा। समस्तेभ्यः प्रशस्तेभ्यो वसुभ्यो वसुधाधिप ॥१२-३५३-५॥
devarājena ca purā kathaiṣā kathitā śubhā। samastebhyaḥ praśastebhyo vasubhyo vasudhādhipa ॥12-353-5॥
[देवराजेन (devarājena) - by the king of the gods; च (ca) - and; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कथा (kathā) - story; एषा (eṣā) - this; कथिता (kathitā) - was told; शुभा (śubhā) - auspicious; समस्तेभ्यः (samastebhyaḥ) - to all; प्रशस्तेभ्यः (praśastebhyaḥ) - to the excellent; वसुभ्यः (vasubhyaḥ) - to the Vasus; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - O lord of the earth;]
(By the king of the gods and formerly this auspicious story was told to all, to the excellent, to the Vasus, O lord of the earth.)
O lord of the earth, this auspicious story was once told by the king of the gods to all the excellent Vasus. (12-353-5)
यदा च मम रामेण युद्धमासीत्सुदारुणम्। वसुभिश्च तदा राजन्कथेयं कथिता मम ॥१२-३५३-६॥
yadā ca mama rāmeṇa yuddham āsīt sudāruṇam। vasubhiś ca tadā rājan katheyaṃ kathitā mama ॥12-353-6॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सुदारुणम् (sudāruṇam) - very terrible; वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - by the Vasus; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कथेयम् (katheyaṃ) - this story; कथिता (kathitā) - was told; मम (mama) - by me;]
(When and my by Rāma battle was very terrible; by the Vasus and then O king; this story was told by me.)
O king, when there was a very terrible battle between me and Rāma, then this story was told by me to the Vasus. (12-353-6)
पृच्छमानाय तत्त्वेन मया तुभ्यं विशां पते। कथेयं कथिता पुण्या धर्म्या धर्मभृतां वर ॥१२-३५३-७॥
pṛcchamānāya tattvena mayā tubhyaṃ viśāṃ pate। katheyaṃ kathitā puṇyā dharmyā dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥12-353-7॥
[पृच्छमानाय (pṛcchamānāya) - to the one asking; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; in reality; मया (mayā) - by me; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; कथेयं (katheyaṃ) - I should tell; कथिता (kathitā) - told; पुण्या (puṇyā) - meritorious; धर्म्या (dharmyā) - righteous; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtāṃ) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best;]
(To the one asking, truly, by me, to you, O lord of the people, I should tell, told, meritorious, righteous, best of the upholders of dharma.)
O best of the upholders of dharma, O lord of the people, I have truly told you, who are asking, this meritorious and righteous account. (12-353-7)
तदेष परमो धर्मो यन्मां पृच्छसि भारत। असन्नधीरनाकाङ्क्षी धर्मार्थकरणे नृप ॥१२-३५३-८॥
tadeṣa paramo dharmo yan māṃ pṛcchasi bhārata। asannadhīranākāṅkṣī dharmārthakaraṇe nṛpa ॥12-353-8॥
[तत् (tat) - that; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; असन् (asan) - not being; अधीर (adhīra) - unsteady; अनाकाङ्क्षी (anākāṅkṣī) - without desire; धर्मार्थकरणे (dharmārthakaraṇe) - in the performance of duty and purpose; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(That this is the supreme duty which you ask me, O Bhārata: not being unsteady, without desire, in the performance of duty and purpose, O king.)
O Bhārata, that which you ask me is the supreme duty: to be unwavering and free from desire in the performance of duty and purpose, O king. (12-353-8)
स च किल कृतनिश्चयो द्विजाग्र्यो; भुजगपतिप्रतिदेशितार्थकृत्यः। यमनियमसमाहितो वनान्तं; परिगणितोञ्छशिलाशनः प्रविष्टः ॥१२-३५३-९॥
sa ca kila kṛtaniścayo dvijāgryo; bhujagapatipratideśitārthakṛtyaḥ. yamaniyamasamāhito vanāntaṃ; parigaṇitoñchaśilāśanaḥ praviṣṭaḥ ॥12-353-9॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; किल (kila) - indeed; कृतनिश्चयः (kṛtaniścayaḥ) - having made a decision; द्विजाग्र्यः (dvijāgryaḥ) - the foremost among twice-born (brāhmaṇa); भुजगपति (bhujagapati) - lord of serpents; प्रतिदेशित (pratideśita) - as instructed; अर्थकृत्यः (arthakṛtyaḥ) - having performed the required act; यम (yama) - restraint; नियम (niyama) - observance; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - composed; वनान्तम् (vanāntam) - to the forest's end; परिगणित (parigaṇita) - regarded as; उञ्छ (uñcha) - gleaning; शिला (śilā) - stone; अशनः (aśanaḥ) - eating; प्रविष्टः (praviṣṭaḥ) - entered;]
(He and indeed, having made a decision, the foremost among twice-born, having performed the required act as instructed by the lord of serpents, composed in restraint and observance, to the forest's end, regarded as eating gleanings and stones, entered.)
He, having firmly resolved, the foremost of the twice-born, having performed the task as instructed by the lord of serpents, composed in restraint and observance, entered the depths of the forest, subsisting on gleanings and stones. (12-353-9)
