ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

The brāhmaṇa said.
आश्चर्यं नात्र संदेहः सुप्रीतोऽस्मि भुजङ्गम। अन्वर्थोपगतैर्वाक्यैः पन्थानं चास्मि दर्शितः ॥१२-३५२-१॥
āścaryaṃ nātra saṃdehaḥ suprīto'smi bhujaṅgama। anvarthopagatairvākyaiḥ panthānaṃ cāsmi darśitaḥ ॥12-352-1॥
[आश्चर्यं (āścaryam) - wonder; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संदेहः (saṃdehaḥ) - doubt; सुप्रीतः (suprītaḥ) - well-pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - O serpent; अन्वर्थोपगतैः (anv-artha-upagataiḥ) - with words having appropriate meaning; वाक्यैः (vākyaiḥ) - by sentences; पन्थानं (panthānam) - the path; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दर्शितः (darśitaḥ) - shown;]
(Wonder not here doubt; well-pleased I am O serpent; with words having appropriate meaning by sentences the path and I am shown.)
There is no doubt that this is wonderful; O serpent, I am well-pleased, for by sentences with appropriate meaning, you have shown me the path. (12-352-1)
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि साधो भुजगसत्तम। स्मरणीयोऽस्मि भवता सम्प्रेषणनियोजनैः ॥१२-३५२-२॥
svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi sādho bhujagasattama। smaraṇīyo'smi bhavatā sampreṣaṇaniyojanaiḥ ॥12-352-2॥
[स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; भुजगसत्तम (bhujagasattama) - best of serpents; स्मरणीयः (smaraṇīyaḥ) - to be remembered; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; सम्प्रेषणनियोजनैः (sampreṣaṇaniyojanaiḥ) - by the assignments of sending; by the commissions of dispatch;]
(Well-being to you; let it be; I shall go; O noble one; best of serpents; to be remembered; I am; by you; by the assignments of sending;)
May well-being be to you; I shall go, O noble one, best of serpents. I am to be remembered by you by the assignments of sending. (12-352-2)
नाग उवाच॥

The serpent said.
अनुक्त्वा मद्गतं कार्यं क्वेदानीं प्रस्थितो भवान्। उच्यतां द्विज यत्कार्यं यदर्थं त्वमिहागतः ॥१२-३५२-३॥
anuktvā madgataṃ kāryaṃ kvedānīṃ prasthito bhavān। ucyatāṃ dvija yatkāryaṃ yadarthaṃ tvamihāgataḥ ॥12-352-3॥
[अनुक्त्वा (anuktvā) - without having said; मद्गतं (madgataṃ) - pertaining to me; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; क्व (kva) - where; इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); उच्यतां (ucyatāṃ) - let it be said; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born (Brahmin); यत् (yat) - which; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; यदर्थं (yadarthaṃ) - for which purpose; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इह (iha) - here; आगतः (āgataḥ) - have come;]
(Without having said the task pertaining to me, where now have you departed? Let it be said, O twice-born, which task, for which purpose you have come here.)
Without telling me about the task concerning me, where are you going now? O Brahmin, please tell me what task and for what purpose you have come here. (12-352-3)
उक्तानुक्ते कृते कार्ये मामामन्त्र्य द्विजर्षभ। मया प्रत्यभ्यनुज्ञातस्ततो यास्यसि ब्राह्मण ॥१२-३५२-४॥
uktānukte kṛte kārye mām āmantrya dvijarṣabha। mayā pratyabhyanujñātaḥ tato yāsyasi brāhmaṇa ॥12-352-4॥
[उक्त-अनुक्ते (ukta-anukte) - said-unsaid; कृते (kṛte) - having been done; कार्ये (kārye) - in the matter; माम् (mām) - me; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of twice-born; मया (mayā) - by me; प्रत्यभ्यनुज्ञातः (pratyabhyanujñātaḥ) - having been especially permitted; ततः (tataḥ) - then; यास्यसि (yāsyasi) - you will go; ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - O brāhmaṇa;]
(In the matter of what is said and unsaid, having been done, having addressed me, O best of twice-born, having been especially permitted by me, then you will go, O brāhmaṇa.)
O brāhmaṇa, in matters done, whether said or unsaid, after addressing me, O best of twice-born, and having received my special permission, then you may depart. (12-352-4)
न हि मां केवलं दृष्ट्वा त्यक्त्वा प्रणयवानिह। गन्तुमर्हसि विप्रर्षे वृक्षमूलगतो यथा ॥१२-३५२-५॥
na hi māṃ kevalaṃ dṛṣṭvā tyaktvā praṇayavān iha। gantum arhasi viprarṣe vṛkṣamūlagato yathā ॥12-352-5॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; प्रणयवान् (praṇayavān) - affectionate; इह (iha) - here; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; वृक्षमूलगतः (vṛkṣamūlagataḥ) - gone to the root of a tree; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Not indeed me only having seen, having abandoned, affectionate here, to go you ought, O best of Brāhmaṇas, gone to the root of a tree as.)
Indeed, having seen me here and being affectionate, you should not leave me and go away as one who has gone to the root of a tree, O best of Brāhmaṇas. (12-352-5)
त्वयि चाहं द्विजश्रेष्ठ भवान्मयि न संशयः। लोकोऽयं भवतः सर्वः का चिन्ता मयि तेऽनघ ॥१२-३५२-६॥
tvayi cāhaṃ dvijaśreṣṭha bhavān mayi na saṃśayaḥ। loko'yaṃ bhavataḥ sarvaḥ kā cintā mayi te'nagha ॥12-352-6॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; द्विजश्रेष्ठ (dvijaśreṣṭha) - O best of twice-born; भवान् (bhavān) - you; मयि (mayi) - in me; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; अयम् (ayam) - this; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - of you; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; का (kā) - what; चिन्ता (cintā) - worry; मयि (mayi) - in me; ते (te) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(In you and I, O best of twice-born, you, in me, not doubt; world this of you all; what worry in me your, O sinless one;)
O best of twice-born, both you and I are in each other without doubt; this entire world is yours; what worry is there for you in me, O sinless one? (12-352-6)
ब्राह्मण उवाच॥

The brāhmaṇa said.
एवमेतन्महाप्राज्ञ विज्ञातार्थ भुजङ्गम। नातिरिक्तास्त्वया देवाः सर्वथैव यथातथम् ॥१२-३५२-७॥
evam etan mahāprājña vijñātārtha bhujaṅgama। nātiriktās tvayā devāḥ sarvathaiva yathā tatham ॥12-352-7॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; विज्ञातार्थ (vijñātārtha) - one who has understood the meaning; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - O serpent; न (na) - not; अतिरिक्ताः (atiriktāḥ) - exceeded; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; एव (eva) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so;]
(Thus this, O greatly wise one, O serpent who has understood the meaning, not exceeded by you the gods in every way indeed as so.)
Thus it is, O greatly wise one, O serpent who has understood the meaning; the gods have not at all been surpassed by you in any way, just as it is. (12-352-7)
य एवाहं स एव त्वमेवमेतद्भुजङ्गम। अहं भवांश्च भूतानि सर्वे सर्वत्रगाः सदा ॥१२-३५२-८॥
ya evāhaṃ sa eva tvam evam etad bhujaṅgama। ahaṃ bhavāṃś ca bhūtāni sarve sarvatragāḥ sadā ॥12-352-8॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; एव (eva) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सः (saḥ) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - serpent; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; भवान् (bhavān) - you (respectful); च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सर्वत्रगाः (sarvatragāḥ) - those who go everywhere; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Who indeed I, he indeed you, thus this serpent. I, you, and beings, all, those who go everywhere, always. (12-352-8))
He who is I is indeed you, and thus is this serpent. I, you, and all beings, all who pervade everywhere, always. (12-352-8)
आसीत्तु मे भोगपते संशयः पुण्यसञ्चये। सोऽहमुञ्छव्रतं साधो चरिष्याम्यर्थदर्शनम् ॥१२-३५२-९॥
āsīttu me bhogapate saṃśayaḥ puṇyasañcaye। so'hamuñchavrataṃ sādho cariṣyāmyarthadarśanam ॥12-352-9॥
[आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - to me; भोगपते (bhogapate) - O lord of enjoyment; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; पुण्यसञ्चये (puṇyasañcaye) - in the accumulation of merit; सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; उञ्छव्रतम् (uñchavratam) - the vow of gleaning; साधो (sādho) - O holy one; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - shall practice; अर्थदर्शनम् (arthadarśanam) - for the vision of meaning;]
(But there was to me, O lord of enjoyment, a doubt in the accumulation of merit. Therefore, O holy one, I shall practice the vow of gleaning for the vision of meaning. (12-352-9))
But, O lord of enjoyment, I had a doubt regarding the accumulation of merit. Therefore, O holy one, I shall undertake the vow of gleaning in order to understand the true meaning. (12-352-9)
एष मे निश्चयः साधो कृतः कारणवत्तरः। आमन्त्रयामि भद्रं ते कृतार्थोऽस्मि भुजङ्गम ॥१२-३५२-१०॥
eṣa me niścayaḥ sādho kṛtaḥ kāraṇavattaraḥ। āmantrayāmi bhadraṃ te kṛtārtho'smi bhujaṅgama ॥12-352-10॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; मे (me) - my; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - determination; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; कारणवत्तरः (kāraṇavattaraḥ) - most reasonable; आमन्त्रयामि (āmantrayāmi) - I bid farewell; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good fortune; ते (te) - to you; कृतार्थः (kṛtārthaḥ) - one whose purpose is accomplished; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - O serpent;]
(This my determination, O noble one, is made most reasonable. I bid farewell, good fortune to you; I am one whose purpose is accomplished, O serpent.)
This is my firm decision, O noble one, made with the greatest reason. I bid you farewell, may good fortune be yours; my purpose is fulfilled, O serpent. (12-352-10)
