शमो बहुविधाकारः सूक्ष्म उक्तः पितामह। न च मे हृदये शान्तिरस्ति कृत्वेदमीदृशम् ॥१३-१-१॥
śamo bahuvidhākāraḥ sūkṣma uktaḥ pitāmaha। na ca me hṛdaye śāntirasti kṛtvedamīdṛśam ॥13-1-1॥
[शमः (śamaḥ) - tranquility; बहुविध (bahuvidha) - of many kinds; आकारः (ākāraḥ) - forms; सूक्ष्म (sūkṣma) - subtle; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - is said; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in the heart; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; अस्ति (asti) - is; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; इदम् (idam) - this; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such;]
(Tranquility of many kinds of forms is said, O grandsire. Not and to me in the heart peace is, having done this such.)
O grandsire, tranquility is said to be of many subtle forms. Yet, having done such a thing, there is no peace in my heart. (13-1-1)
अस्मिन्नर्थे बहुविधा शान्तिरुक्ता त्वयानघ। स्वकृते का नु शान्तिः स्याच्छमाद्बहुविधादपि ॥१३-१-२॥
asminnarthe bahuvidhā śāntiruktā tvayānagha। svakṛte kā nu śāntiḥ syācchamādbahuvidhādapi ॥13-1-2॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अर्थे (arthe) - matter; बहुविधा (bahuvidhā) - of many kinds; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; उक्ता (uktā) - spoken; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; स्वकृते (svakṛte) - for one's own act; का (kā) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; शमात् (śamāt) - from forbearance; बहुविधात् (bahuvidhāt) - from many kinds; अपि (api) - even;]
(In this matter, peace of many kinds has been spoken by you, O sinless one; for one's own act, what indeed peace would be, even from forbearance of many kinds.)
O sinless one, in this matter, you have described many kinds of peace; but for one's own actions, what peace could there be, even from many kinds of forbearance? (13-1-2)
शराचितशरीरं हि तीव्रव्रणमुदीक्ष्य च। शमं नोपलभे वीर दुष्कृतान्येव चिन्तयन् ॥१३-१-३॥
śarācitaśarīraṃ hi tīvravraṇamudīkṣya ca। śamaṃ nopalabhe vīra duṣkṛtānyeva cintayan ॥13-1-3॥
[शर (śara) - arrow; आचित (ācita) - heaped up; शरीरं (śarīraṃ) - body; हि (hi) - indeed; तीव्र (tīvra) - severe; व्रणम् (vraṇam) - wound; उदीक्ष्य (udīkṣya) - having seen; च (ca) - and; शमं (śamam) - peace; न (na) - not; उपलभे (upalabhe) - I obtain; वीर (vīra) - hero; दुष्कृतानि (duṣkṛtāni) - evil deeds; एव (eva) - only; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking;]
(Having seen the body heaped with arrows and the severe wound, indeed, and not obtaining peace, O hero, thinking only of evil deeds.)
O hero, seeing your body covered with arrows and the severe wound, I find no peace, thinking only of evil deeds. (13-1-3)
रुधिरेणावसिक्ताङ्गं प्रस्रवन्तं यथाचलम्। त्वां दृष्ट्वा पुरुषव्याघ्र सीदे वर्षास्विवाम्बुजम् ॥१३-१-४॥
rudhireṇāvasiktāṅgaṃ prasravantaṃ yathācalam। tvāṃ dṛṣṭvā puruṣavyāghra sīde varṣāsvivāmbujam ॥13-1-4॥
[रुधिरेण (rudhireṇa) - with blood; आवसिक्त (āvasikta) - soaked; अङ्गं (aṅgam) - body; प्रस्रवन्तं (prasravantam) - flowing; यथा (yathā) - like; अचलम् (acalam) - mountain; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; सीदे (sīde) - droops; वर्षासु (varṣāsu) - in the rains; इव (iva) - like; अम्बुजम् (ambujam) - lotus;]
(With blood-soaked body, flowing like a mountain; having seen you, O tiger among men, droops like a lotus in the rains.)
Seeing you, O tiger among men, with your body soaked in blood and flowing like a mountain, droops like a lotus in the rains. (13-1-4)
अतः कष्टतरं किं नु मत्कृते यत्पितामहः। इमामवस्थां गमितः प्रत्यमित्रै रणाजिरे ॥ तथैवान्ये नृपतयः सहपुत्राः सबान्धवाः ॥१३-१-५॥
ataḥ kaṣṭataraṃ kiṃ nu matkṛte yatpitāmahaḥ। imāmavasthāṃ gamitaḥ pratyamitrai raṇājire॥ tathaivānye nṛpatayaḥ sahaputrāḥ sabāndhavāḥ॥13-1-5॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; कष्टतरं (kaṣṭataraṃ) - more difficult; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मत्कृते (matkṛte) - for my sake; यत् (yat) - that; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; इमाम् (imām) - this; अवस्थाम् (avasthām) - state; गमितः (gamitaḥ) - has been brought; प्रत्यमित्रैः (pratyamitraiḥ) - by adversaries; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - on the battlefield; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अन्ये (anye) - other; नृपतयः (nṛpatayaḥ) - kings; सहपुत्राः (sahaputrāḥ) - with sons; सबान्धवाः (sabāndhavāḥ) - with relatives;]
(Therefore, what is more difficult indeed for my sake, that the grandfather has been brought to this state by adversaries on the battlefield? In the same way, other kings with sons and with relatives (have been brought to this state).)
Therefore, what could be more difficult than this for my sake, that the grandfather has been brought to this condition by adversaries on the battlefield? In the same way, other kings, along with their sons and relatives, have also been brought to this state. (13-1-5)
वयं हि धार्तराष्ट्राश्च कालमन्युवशानुगाः। कृत्वेदं निन्दितं कर्म प्राप्स्यामः कां गतिं नृप ॥१३-१-६॥
vayaṃ hi dhārtarāṣṭrāś ca kālam anyuvaśānugāḥ। kṛtvedam ninditaṃ karma prāpsyāmaḥ kāṃ gatiṃ nṛpa ॥13-1-6॥
[वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; च (ca) - and; काल (kāla) - time; मन्यु (manyu) - anger; वश (vaśa) - control; अनुगाः (anugāḥ) - followers; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; इदम् (idam) - this; निन्दितम् (ninditam) - blameworthy; कर्म (karma) - action; प्राप्स्यामः (prāpsyāmaḥ) - we shall attain; कां (kāṃ) - which; गतिम् (gatim) - state; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(We indeed, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and ourselves, followers under the control of time and anger, having done this blameworthy action, O king, which state shall we attain?)
O king, we and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, being followers under the sway of time and anger, having performed this blameworthy deed, what fate shall we attain? (13-1-6)
अहं तव ह्यन्तकरः सुहृद्वधकरस्तथा। न शान्तिमधिगच्छामि पश्यंस्त्वां दुःखितं क्षितौ ॥१३-१-७॥
ahaṃ tava hyantakaraḥ suhṛd-vadhakaras-tathā। na śāntim adhigacchāmi paśyaṃs tvāṃ duḥkhitaṃ kṣitau ॥13-1-7॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तव (tava) - of you; हि (hi) - indeed; अन्तकरः (antakaraḥ) - destroyer; सुहृत् (suhṛt) - friend; वधकरः (vadhakaraḥ) - slayer; तथा (tathā) - also; न (na) - not; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; अधिगच्छामि (adhigacchāmi) - attain; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; दुःखितम् (duḥkhitam) - afflicted; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the ground;]
(I of you indeed destroyer friend slayer also not peace attain seeing you afflicted on the ground)
I am indeed your destroyer, also a friend and slayer; I do not attain peace, seeing you afflicted on the ground. (13-1-7)
भीष्म उवाच॥

परतन्त्रं कथं हेतुमात्मानमनुपश्यसि। कर्मण्यस्मिन्महाभाग सूक्ष्मं ह्येतदतीन्द्रियम् ॥१३-१-८॥
paratantraṃ kathaṃ hetum ātmānam anupaśyasi। karmaṇy asmin mahābhāga sūkṣmaṃ hy etad atīndriyam ॥13-1-8॥
[परतन्त्रं (paratantraṃ) - dependent; subject to another; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; हेतुम् (hetum) - cause; reason; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; soul; अनुपश्यसि (anupaśyasi) - do you perceive; do you see; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in action; in deed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; महाभाग (mahābhāga) - O greatly fortunate one; सूक्ष्मं (sūkṣmaṃ) - subtle; fine; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; एतत् (etat) - this; अतीन्द्रियम् (atīndriyam) - beyond the senses; transcending the senses;]
(Dependent how cause self do you perceive? In action in this O greatly fortunate one subtle indeed this is beyond the senses.)
How do you perceive the self as the cause when it is dependent? O greatly fortunate one, in this action, this is indeed subtle and beyond the senses. (13-1-8)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। संवादं मृत्युगौतम्योः काललुब्धकपन्नगैः ॥१३-१-९॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। saṃvādaṃ mṛtyugautamyoḥ kālalubdhakapannagaiḥ ॥13-1-9॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; अपि (api) - also; उदाहरन्ति (udāharanti) - they cite; इमम् (imam) - this; इतिहासम् (itihāsam) - history; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; संवादम् (saṃvādam) - dialogue; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - Death; गौतम्योः (gautamyoḥ) - of Gautamī (and); काल (kāla) - Time; लुब्धक (lubdhaka) - greedy; पन्नगैः (pannagaiḥ) - by serpents;]

गौतमी नाम कौन्तेय स्थविरा शमसंयुता। सर्पेण दष्टं स्वं पुत्रमपश्यद्गतचेतनम् ॥१३-१-१०॥
gautamī nāma kaunteya sthavirā śamasaṃyutā। sarpeṇa daṣṭaṃ svaṃ putram apaśyad gatacetanam ॥13-1-10॥
[गौतमी (gautamī) - Gautamī; (name of a woman); नाम (nāma) - named; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; (addressing Yudhiṣṭhira); स्थविरा (sthavirā) - aged; शमसंयुता (śamasaṃyutā) - endowed with tranquility; सर्पेण (sarpeṇa) - by a snake; दष्टं (daṣṭam) - bitten; स्वं (svaṃ) - her own; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - she saw; गतचेतनम् (gatacetanam) - devoid of consciousness;]
(Gautamī named, O son of Kunti, aged, endowed with tranquility, saw her own son bitten by a snake, devoid of consciousness.)
O son of Kunti, Gautamī, an aged and tranquil woman, saw her own son, bitten by a snake and unconscious. (13-1-10)
अथ तं स्नायुपाशेन बद्ध्वा सर्पममर्षितः। लुब्धकोऽर्जुनको नाम गौतम्याः समुपानयत् ॥१३-१-११॥
atha taṃ snāyupāśena baddhvā sarpam amarṣitaḥ। lubdhako'rjunako nāma gautamyāḥ samupānayat ॥13-1-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तम् (tam) - him; स्नायुपाशेन (snāyupāśena) - with a sinew-cord; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; सर्पम् (sarpam) - the serpent; अमर्षितः (amarṣitaḥ) - angered; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; अर्जुनकः (arjunakaḥ) - Arjunaka; नाम (nāma) - named; गौतम्याः (gautamyāḥ) - of Gautamī; समुपानयत् (samupānayat) - brought near;]
(Then him with a sinew-cord having bound the serpent, angered, the hunter Arjunaka named, of Gautamī, brought near.)
Then, having bound the serpent with a sinew-cord, the angry hunter named Arjunaka, belonging to Gautamī, brought him near. (13-1-11)
तां चाब्रवीदयं ते स पुत्रहा पन्नगाधमः। ब्रूहि क्षिप्रं महाभागे वध्यतां केन हेतुना ॥१३-१-१२॥
tāṃ cābravīdayaṃ te sa putrahā pannagādhamaḥ। brūhi kṣipraṃ mahābhāge vadhyatāṃ kena hetunā ॥13-1-12॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; अयम् (ayam) - this; ते (te) - to you; सः (saḥ) - he; पुत्रहा (putrahā) - son-killer; पन्नगाधमः (pannagādhamaḥ) - lowest of serpents; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; महाभागे (mahābhāge) - O greatly fortunate one; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - should be killed; केन (kena) - for what; हेतुना (hetunā) - reason;]
(Her and said this to you he son-killer lowest of serpents; tell quickly O greatly fortunate one should be killed for what reason;)
And he said to her: "This one, the son-killer, the lowest of serpents, is yours. Tell me quickly, O greatly fortunate one, for what reason should he be killed?" (13-1-12)
अग्नौ प्रक्षिप्यतामेष च्छिद्यतां खण्डशोऽपि वा। न ह्ययं बालहा पापश्चिरं जीवितुमर्हति ॥१३-१-१३॥
agnau prakṣipyatām eṣa chidyatāṁ khaṇḍaśo'pi vā। na hy ayaṁ bālahā pāpaś ciraṁ jīvitum arhati ॥13-1-13॥
[अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; प्रक्षिप्यताम् (prakṣipyatām) - let it be thrown; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); च्छिद्यताम् (chidyatām) - let it be cut; खण्डशः (khaṇḍaśaḥ) - into pieces; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); बालहा (bālahā) - child-killer; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinner; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
(In fire let this one be thrown, let it be cut into pieces even or; not indeed this child-killer sinner for long to live deserves.)
Let this one be thrown into the fire, or let him be cut into pieces; for this sinful child-killer does not deserve to live long. (13-1-13)

विसृजैनमबुद्धिस्त्वं न वध्योऽर्जुनक त्वया। को ह्यात्मानं गुरुं कुर्यात्प्राप्तव्ये सति चिन्तयन् ॥१३-१-१४॥
visṛjainamabuddhistvaṃ na vadhyo'rjunaka tvayā। ko hyātmānaṃ guruṃ kuryātprāptavye sati cintayan ॥13-1-14॥
[विसृज (visṛja) - release; let go; एनम् (enam) - him; this one; अबुद्धिः (abuddhiḥ) - without understanding; unintelligent; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; killable; अर्जुनक (arjunaka) - O Arjunaka; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; को (ko) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher; guru; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - would make; would do; प्राप्तव्ये (prāptavye) - when attainable; when to be obtained; सति (sati) - when existing; when present; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking; considering;]
(Release him, O unintelligent one, you are not to be killed, O Arjunaka, by you. Who indeed would make oneself the teacher, when the attainable exists, thinking.)
Let him go, O Arjunaka of little understanding; he is not to be killed by you. For who would make himself the teacher, when the attainable is present, while thinking? (13-1-14)
प्लवन्ते धर्मलघवो लोकेऽम्भसि यथा प्लवाः। मज्जन्ति पापगुरवः शस्त्रं स्कन्नमिवोदके ॥१३-१-१५॥
plavante dharmalaghavo loke’mbhasi yathā plavāḥ। majjanti pāpaguravaḥ śastraṃ skannamivodake ॥13-1-15॥
[प्लवन्ते (plavante) - float; धर्मलघवः (dharmalaghavaḥ) - of little virtue; लोके (loke) - in the world; अम्भसि (ambhasi) - in water; यथा (yathā) - just as; प्लवाः (plavāḥ) - rafts; मज्जन्ति (majjanti) - sink; पापगुरवः (pāpaguravaḥ) - heavy with sin; शस्त्रं (śastram) - weapon; स्कन्नम् (skannam) - fallen; इव (iva) - like; उदके (udake) - in water;]
(Float those of little virtue in the world in water just as rafts; sink those heavy with sin, weapon fallen like in water.)
Those of little virtue float in the world like rafts on water; but those heavy with sin sink like a weapon fallen in water. (13-1-15)
न चामृत्युर्भविता वै हतेऽस्मि; न्को वात्ययः स्यादहतेऽस्मिञ्जनस्य। अस्योत्सर्गे प्राणयुक्तस्य जन्तो; र्मृत्योर्लोकं को नु गच्छेदनन्तम् ॥१३-१-१६॥
na cāmṛtyur bhavitā vai hate'smi; na ko vā atyayaḥ syād ahate'smiñ janasya. asya utsarge prāṇa-yuktasya jantoḥ; mṛtyoḥ lokam ko nu gacchet anantam ॥13-1-16॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अमृत्युः (amṛtyuḥ) - absence of death; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; वै (vai) - indeed; हते (hate) - if killed; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; न (na) - not; कः (kaḥ) - who; वा (vā) - or; अत्ययः (atyayaḥ) - destruction; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अहते (ahate) - if not killed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; जनस्य (janasya) - of a person; अस्य (asya) - of this; उत्सर्गे (utsarge) - at the departure; प्राणयुक्तस्य (prāṇa-yuktasya) - endowed with life-breath; जन्तोः (jantoḥ) - of the living being; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; लोकं (lokam) - world; कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - would go; अनन्तम् (anantam) - endless;]
(Not and absence of death will be indeed if killed I am; not who or destruction would be if not killed in this of a person. Of this at the departure endowed with life-breath of the living being; to death world who indeed would go endless. (13-1-16))
If I am killed, there will certainly not be immortality; nor would there be any destruction for a person if I am not killed. When this living being, endowed with life-breath, departs, who indeed would go to the endless world of death? (13-1-16)
लुब्धक उवाच॥
lubdhaka uvāca॥
[लुब्धक (lubdhaka) - hunter; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

The hunter said.
जानाम्येवं नेह गुणागुणज्ञाः; सर्वे नियुक्ता गुरवो वै भवन्ति। स्वस्थस्यैते तूपदेशा भवन्ति; तस्मात्क्षुद्रं सर्पमेनं हनिष्ये ॥१३-१-१७॥
jānāmyevaṃ neha guṇāguṇajñāḥ; sarve niyuktā guravo vai bhavanti. svasthasyaite tūpadeśā bhavanti; tasmātkṣudraṃ sarpomenaṃ haniṣye ॥13-1-17॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; न (na) - not; इह (iha) - here; गुण-अगुण-ज्ञाः (guṇa-aguṇa-jñāḥ) - knowers of merit and demerit; सर्वे (sarve) - all; नियुक्ताः (niyuktāḥ) - appointed; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - elders; वै (vai) - indeed; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; स्वस्थस्य (svasthasya) - of the healthy; एते (ete) - these; तु (tu) - but; उपदेशाः (upadeśāḥ) - instructions; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - are; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - mean; सर्पम् (sarpam) - serpent; एनम् (enam) - this; हनिष्ये (haniṣye) - I shall kill;]
(I know thus; not here knowers of merit and demerit; all appointed elders indeed are; of the healthy these but instructions are; therefore mean serpent this I shall kill. (13-1-17))
I know this; here, there are no true judges of merit and demerit; all the elders are merely appointed; these instructions are for the healthy; therefore, I shall kill this mean serpent. (13-1-17)
समीप्सन्तः कालयोगं त्यजन्ति; सद्यः शुचं त्वर्थविदस्त्यजन्ति। श्रेयः क्षयः शोचतां नित्यशो हि; तस्मात्त्याज्यं जहि शोकं हतेऽस्मिन् ॥१३-१-१८॥
samīpsantaḥ kālayogaṃ tyajanti; sadyaḥ śucaṃ tv arthavid as tyajanti. śreyaḥ kṣayaḥ śocatāṃ nityaśo hi; tasmāt tyājyaṃ jahi śokaṃ hate 'smin ॥13-1-18॥
[समीप्सन्तः (samīpsantaḥ) - desiring to obtain; कालयोगं (kālayogam) - opportunity of time; त्यजन्ति (tyajanti) - they abandon; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; शुचं (śucam) - grief; तु (tu) - but; अर्थविदः (arthavidaḥ) - knowers of the purpose; त्यजन्ति (tyajanti) - abandon; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction; शोचतां (śocatām) - of those who grieve; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्याज्यं (tyājyam) - to be abandoned; जहि (jahi) - give up; शोकं (śokam) - grief; हते (hate) - when slain; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this;]
(Desiring to obtain, they abandon the opportunity of time; but knowers of the purpose abandon grief immediately. Indeed, destruction is always better for those who grieve; therefore, give up the grief in this when slain.)
Those who are eager for gain let opportunities slip by; but the wise abandon grief at once. For those who grieve, destruction is constant; therefore, give up your sorrow for the one slain in this (battle). (13-1-18)

na caivārtirvidyate'smadvidhānāṃ; dharmārāmaḥ satataṃ sajjano hi. nityāyasto bālajano na cāsti; dharmo hyeṣa prabhavāmyasya nāham ॥13-1-19॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; आर्तिः (ārtiḥ) - affliction; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; अस्मद्विधानां (asmadvidhānām) - of those like us; धर्मारामः (dharmārāmaḥ) - delighting in dharma; सततम् (satatam) - always; सज्जनः (sajjanaḥ) - good person; हि (hi) - indeed; नित्याय (nityāya) - for the eternal; अस्तः (astaḥ) - is; बालजनः (bālajanaḥ) - childish person; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्ति (asti) - is; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; हि (hi) - indeed; एष (eṣa) - this; प्रभवामि (prabhavāmi) - I originate; अस्य (asya) - of this; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Not and indeed affliction exists for those like us; delighting in dharma always good person indeed. For the eternal is childish person not and is; dharma indeed this I originate of this not I. (13-1-19))
There is indeed no affliction for people like us; a good person is always one who delights in dharma. For the eternal, there is no childish person; indeed, I am not the origin of this dharma. (13-1-19)
न ब्राह्मणानां कोपोऽस्ति कुतः कोपाच्च यातना। मार्दवात्क्षम्यतां साधो मुच्यतामेष पन्नगः ॥१३-१-२०॥
na brāhmaṇānāṃ kopo'sti kutaḥ kopācca yātanā। mārdavātkṣamyatāṃ sādho mucyatāmeṣa pannagaḥ ॥13-1-20॥
[न (na) - not; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; कोपः (kopaḥ) - anger; अस्ति (asti) - is; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; च (ca) - and; यातना (yātanā) - torment; मार्दवात् (mārdavāt) - from gentleness; क्षम्यताम् (kṣamyatām) - let it be forgiven; साधो (sādho) - O good one; मुच्यताम् (mucyatām) - let be released; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - serpent;]
(Not of the Brāhmaṇas anger is; from where from anger and torment? From gentleness let it be forgiven, O good one, let this serpent be released.)
There is no anger in Brāhmaṇas; how then can torment arise from anger? Out of gentleness, let it be forgiven, O noble one, let this serpent be released. (13-1-20)
लुब्धक उवाच॥

हत्वा लाभः श्रेय एवाव्ययं स्या; त्सद्यो लाभो बलवद्भिः प्रशस्तः। कालाल्लाभो यस्तु सद्यो भवेत; हते श्रेयः कुत्सिते त्वीदृशे स्यात् ॥१३-१-२१॥
hatvā lābhaḥ śreya evāvyayaṃ syā; tsadyo lābho balavadbhiḥ praśastaḥ. kālāllābho yastu sadyo bhavet; hate śreyaḥ kutsite tvīdṛśe syāt ॥13-1-21॥
[हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - gain; श्रेय (śreya) - better; एव (eva) - indeed; अव्ययं (avyayaṃ) - imperishable; स्या (syā) - would be; त्सद्यो (tsadyo) - that immediately; लाभो (lābho) - gain; बलवद्भिः (balavadbhiḥ) - by the strong; प्रशस्तः (praśastaḥ) - praised; कालाल्लाभो (kālāllābho) - gain from time; यस्तु (yastu) - but which; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; भवेत (bhavet) - would be; हते (hate) - having slain; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; कुत्सिते (kutsite) - in the despicable; त्वीदृशे (tvīdṛśe) - such as this; स्यात् (syāt) - would be;]
(Having slain, gain indeed better imperishable would be; that immediate gain by the strong is praised. Gain from time but which immediately would be; having slain, better in the despicable such as this would be. (13-1-21))
If, by killing, the gain is truly better and imperishable, then such immediate gain is praised by the strong. But a gain that comes only with time, even if immediate, would not be better if it is achieved by killing in such a despicable manner. (13-1-21)

kārthaprāptirgṛhya śatruṃ nihatya; kā vā śāntiḥ prāpya śatruṃ namuktvā. kasmātsaumya bhujage na kṣameyaṃ; mokṣaṃ vā kiṃ kāraṇaṃ nāsya kuryām ॥13-1-22॥

(What attainment of purpose is there by seizing and slaying the enemy; or what peace is there by obtaining the enemy without releasing (him). Why, O gentle one, O serpent, should I not forgive; or what reason is there that I should not do liberation for him.)
What is the gain in seizing and killing the enemy? Or what peace is there in obtaining the enemy without releasing him? Why, O gentle one, O serpent, should I not forgive? Or what reason is there that I should not grant him liberation? (13-1-22)
लुब्धक उवाच॥

nāsmimhate pannage putrako me; samprāpsyate lubdhaka jīvitaṃ vai. guṇaṃ cānyaṃ nāsya vadhe prapaśye; tasmātsarpaṃ lubdhaka muñca jīvam ॥13-1-24॥

(Not in this being killed, O serpent, my son will obtain, O hunter, life indeed. Virtue and other I do not see in this killing. Therefore, O hunter, release the serpent alive. (13-1-24))
O hunter, by killing this serpent, my son will not regain his life. I do not see any other virtue in this killing. Therefore, O hunter, release the serpent alive. (13-1-24)

वृत्रं हत्वा देवराट्श्रेष्ठभाग्वै; यज्ञं हत्वा भागमवाप चैव। शूली देवो देववृत्तं कुरु त्वं; क्षिप्रं सर्पं जहि मा भूद्विशङ्का ॥१३-१-२५॥
vṛtraṃ hatvā devarāṭśreṣṭhabhāgvai; yajñaṃ hatvā bhāgam avāpa caiva. śūlī devo devavṛttaṃ kuru tvaṃ; kṣipraṃ sarpaṃ jahi mā bhūd viśaṅkā ॥13-1-25॥

(Having slain Vṛtra, the king of the gods indeed obtained the best portion; having slain the sacrifice, he also obtained the portion. O trident-holder god, do the act of the gods; quickly slay the serpent, do not let there be doubt.)

असकृत्प्रोच्यमानापि गौतमी भुजगं प्रति। लुब्धकेन महाभागा पापे नैवाकरोन्मतिम् ॥१३-१-२६॥
asakṛtprocyamānāpi gautamī bhujagaṃ prati। lubdhakena mahābhāgā pāpe naivākaronmatim ॥13-1-26॥
[असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; many times; प्रोच्यमाना (procyamānā) - being told; being addressed; अपि (api) - even; although; गौतमी (gautamī) - Gautamī; (name of the lady); भुजगं (bhujagaṃ) - serpent; snake; प्रति (prati) - towards; regarding; लुब्धकेन (lubdhakena) - by the hunter; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - the greatly fortunate one; the highly blessed; पापे (pāpe) - about the sinful one; about the sinner; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; at all; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; did; मतिम् (matim) - thought; intention;]
(Although being repeatedly addressed by the hunter regarding the serpent, the greatly fortunate Gautamī did not at all make up her mind about the sinful one. (13-1-26))
Even though the hunter repeatedly spoke to Gautamī about the serpent, the highly blessed lady did not form any intention regarding the sinful one. (13-1-26)
ईषदुच्छ्वसमानस्तु कृच्छ्रात्संस्तभ्य पन्नगः। उत्ससर्ज गिरं मन्दां मानुषीं पाशपीडितः ॥१३-१-२७॥
īṣad-ucchvasamānas tu kṛcchrāt saṃstabhya pannagaḥ। utsasarja giraṃ mandāṃ mānuṣīṃ pāśapīḍitaḥ॥13-1-27॥
[ईषत् (īṣat) - slightly; उच्छ्वसमानः (ucchvasamānaḥ) - breathing out; तु (tu) - but; कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - with difficulty; संस्तभ्य (saṃstabhya) - having restrained; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - the serpent; उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - uttered; गिरं (giraṃ) - speech; मन्दां (mandāṃ) - faint; मानुषीं (mānuṣīṃ) - human; पाशपीडितः (pāśapīḍitaḥ) - afflicted by the noose;]
(Slightly breathing out but with difficulty, having restrained, the serpent, afflicted by the noose, uttered faint human speech.)
The serpent, barely breathing and struggling, restrained himself and, afflicted by the noose, uttered faint words in human speech. (13-1-27)
को न्वर्जुनक दोषोऽत्र विद्यते मम बालिश। अस्वतन्त्रं हि मां मृत्युर्विवशं यदचूचुदत् ॥१३-१-२८॥
ko nvarjunaka doṣo'tra vidyate mama bāliśa। asvatantraṃ hi māṃ mṛtyurvivaśaṃ yadacūcudat ॥13-1-28॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; नु (nu) - indeed; अर्जुनक (arjunaka) - Arjunaka; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; अत्र (atra) - here; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मम (mama) - my; बालिश (bāliśa) - childish one; अस्वतन्त्रम् (asvatantram) - not independent; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; विवशम् (vivaśam) - helpless; यत् (yat) - that; अचूचुदत् (acūcudat) - pierced;]
(Who indeed, Arjunaka, fault here exists my childish one? Not independent indeed me death helpless that pierced.)
O Arjunaka, what fault is there of mine here, O childish one? Death, when I was not independent and helpless, pierced me. (13-1-28)
तस्यायं वचनाद्दष्टो न कोपेन न काम्यया। तस्य तत्किल्बिषं लुब्ध विद्यते यदि किल्बिषम् ॥१३-१-२९॥
tasyāyaṃ vacanāddaṣṭo na kopena na kāmyayā। tasya tatkilbiṣaṃ lubdha vidyate yadi kilbiṣam ॥13-1-29॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; अयम् (ayam) - this; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the command; दष्टः (daṣṭaḥ) - bitten; न (na) - not; कोपेन (kopena) - by anger; न (na) - not; काम्यया (kāmyayā) - by desire; तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin; लुब्ध (lubdha) - greedy; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; यदि (yadi) - if; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin;]
(Of him, this, from the command, bitten, not, by anger, not, by desire. Of him, that sin, greedy, exists, if, sin.)
He was bitten by this one's command, not out of anger nor out of desire. If there is any sin, it belongs to the greedy one. (13-1-29)

यद्यन्यवशगेनेदं कृतं ते पन्नगाशुभम्। कारणं वै त्वमप्यत्र तस्मात्त्वमपि किल्बिषी ॥१३-१-३०॥
yady anyavaśagenedaṁ kṛtaṁ te pannagāśubham। kāraṇaṁ vai tvam apy atra tasmāt tvam api kilbiṣī ॥13-1-30॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अन्यवशगेन (anyavaśagena) - by the control of another; इदं (idaṁ) - this; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; ते (te) - by you; पन्नग (pannaga) - O serpent; अशुभम् (aśubham) - evil; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; अत्र (atra) - here; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful;]
(If by the control of another this evil was done by you, O serpent, the cause indeed is you also here; therefore you also are sinful.)
If this evil was done by you, O serpent, under the control of another, then you are also the cause here; therefore, you too are guilty. (13-1-30)
मृत्पात्रस्य क्रियायां हि दण्डचक्रादयो यथा। कारणत्वे प्रकल्प्यन्ते तथा त्वमपि पन्नग ॥१३-१-३१॥
mṛtpātrasya kriyāyāṃ hi daṇḍacakrādayo yathā। kāraṇatve prakalpyante tathā tvam api pannaga ॥13-1-31॥
[मृत्पात्रस्य (mṛtpātrasya) - of the clay vessel; क्रियायां (kriyāyāṃ) - in the making; हि (hi) - indeed; दण्डचक्रादयः (daṇḍacakrādayaḥ) - stick, wheel, etc.; यथा (yathā) - just as; कारणत्वे (kāraṇatve) - in the status of cause; प्रकल्प्यन्ते (prakalpyante) - are considered; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; पन्नग (pannaga) - O serpent;]
(Of the clay vessel in the making indeed stick, wheel, etc. just as in the status of cause are considered, so you also, O serpent.)
Just as the stick, wheel, and other implements are considered causes in the making of a clay vessel, so too, O serpent, you are also regarded as a cause. (13-1-31)
किल्बिषी चापि मे वध्यः किल्बिषी चासि पन्नग। आत्मानं कारणं ह्यत्र त्वमाख्यासि भुजङ्गम ॥१३-१-३२॥
kilbiṣī cāpi me vadhyaḥ kilbiṣī cāsi pannaga। ātmānaṃ kāraṇaṃ hyatra tvamākhyāsi bhujaṅgama ॥13-1-32॥
[किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful one (feminine); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मे (me) - my; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed (masculine); किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful one (feminine); च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; पन्नग (pannaga) - serpent; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - self; कारणं (kāraṇam) - cause; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आख्यासि (ākhyāsi) - declare; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - serpent;]
(Sinful one and also my to-be-killed; sinful one and you are, serpent. Self cause indeed here you declare, serpent.)
You are sinful and deserve to be killed by me; you are indeed sinful, O serpent. Here, you yourself declare yourself as the cause, O serpent. (13-1-32)

सर्व एते ह्यस्ववशा दण्डचक्रादयो यथा। तथाहमपि तस्मान्मे नैष हेतुर्मतस्तव ॥१३-१-३३॥
sarva ete hy asvavaśā daṇḍacakrādayo yathā। tathāham api tasmān me naiṣa hetur matas tava ॥13-1-33॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्ववशाः (asvavaśāḥ) - not under their own control; दण्डचक्रादयः (daṇḍacakrādayaḥ) - staff, wheel, etc.; यथा (yathā) - just as; तथा (tathā) - so; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; मे (me) - my; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हेतुः (hetuḥ) - cause; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; तव (tava) - by you;]
(All these indeed not under their own control, staff, wheel, etc., just as; so I also therefore my not this cause considered by you.)
Just as all these, such as the staff and the wheel, are not under their own control, so I also, therefore, am not to be considered by you as the cause of this. (13-1-33)
अथ वा मतमेतत्ते तेऽप्यन्योन्यप्रयोजकाः। कार्यकारणसंदेहो भवत्यन्योन्यचोदनात् ॥१३-१-३४॥
atha vā matam etat te te'py anyonya-prayojakāḥ। kārya-kāraṇa-sandeho bhavati anyonya-codanāt ॥13-1-34॥
[अथ (atha) - now then; वा (vā) - or; मतम् (matam) - opinion; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - your; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; अन्योन्यप्रयोजकाः (anyonya-prayojakāḥ) - mutually-causing; कार्य (kārya) - effect; कारण (kāraṇa) - cause; संदेहः (sandehaḥ) - doubt; भवति (bhavati) - arises; अन्योन्यचोदनात् (anyonya-codanāt) - from mutual prompting;]
(Now then, or, this opinion of yours, they also are mutually-causing; effect-cause-doubt arises from mutual prompting.)
Alternatively, if this is your opinion, then they too are mutually causative; a doubt about cause and effect arises due to mutual prompting. (13-1-34)
एवं सति न दोषो मे नास्मि वध्यो न किल्बिषी। किल्बिषं समवाये स्यान्मन्यसे यदि किल्बिषम् ॥१३-१-३५॥
evaṃ sati na doṣo me nāsmi vadhyo na kilbiṣī। kilbiṣaṃ samavāye syān manyase yadi kilbiṣam ॥13-1-35॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सति (sati) - being so; न (na) - not; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; मे (me) - of me; न (na) - not; अस्मि (asmi) - am; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - liable to punishment; न (na) - not; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin; समवाये (samavāye) - in the conjunction; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; यदि (yadi) - if; किल्बिषम् (kilbiṣam) - sin;]
(Thus being so, not fault of me, not am (I) liable to punishment, not sinful. Sin in the conjunction would be, you think, if (it is) sin.)
Thus, under these circumstances, there is no fault of mine; I am not liable to punishment, nor am I sinful. If you think there is sin, it would be in the conjunction (of circumstances), if indeed it is sin. (13-1-35)
लुब्धक उवाच॥

कारणं यदि न स्याद्वै न कर्ता स्यास्त्वमप्युत। विनाशे कारणं त्वं च तस्माद्वध्योऽसि मे मतः ॥१३-१-३६॥
kāraṇaṃ yadi na syād vai na kartā syās tvam apy uta. vināśe kāraṇaṃ tvaṃ ca tasmād vadhyo'si me mataḥ ॥13-1-36॥
[कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - were; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; कर्त्ता (karttā) - doer; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; उत (uta) - indeed; विनाशे (vināśe) - in destruction; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - deserving to be killed; असि (asi) - are; मे (me) - by me; मतः (mataḥ) - considered;]
(Cause if not were indeed, not doer would be you also indeed. In destruction cause you and therefore deserving to be killed are by me considered.)
If there were no cause, you would not be the doer, indeed. In the destruction, you are the cause, and therefore, you are considered by me as deserving to be killed. (13-1-36)
असत्यपि कृते कार्ये नेह पन्नग लिप्यते। तस्मान्नात्रैव हेतुः स्याद्वध्यः किं बहु भाषसे ॥१३-१-३७॥
asatyapi kṛte kārye neha pannaga lipyate। tasmānnātraiva hetuḥ syādvadhyaḥ kiṃ bahu bhāṣase ॥13-1-37॥
[असत्यपि (asatyapi) - even if untrue; कृते (kṛte) - having been done; कार्ये (kārye) - in the matter; नेह (neha) - here not; पन्नग (pannaga) - serpent; लिप्यते (lipyate) - is affected; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; अत्रैव (atraiva) - here itself; हेतुः (hetuḥ) - cause; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; किं (kiṃ) - why; बहु (bahu) - much; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - do you speak;]
(Even if untrue having been done in the matter, here not serpent is affected; therefore not here itself cause should be to be killed; why much do you speak;)
Even if something untrue has been done in this matter, the serpent is not affected here; therefore, there is no cause here itself for killing; why do you speak so much? (13-1-37)

कार्याभावे क्रिया न स्यात्सत्यसत्यपि कारणे। तस्मात्त्वमस्मिन्हेतौ मे वाच्यो हेतुर्विशेषतः ॥१३-१-३८॥
kāryābhāve kriyā na syātsatyasatyapi kāraṇe। tasmāttvamasminhetau me vācyo heturviśeṣataḥ ॥13-1-38॥
[कार्य-अभावे (kārya-abhāve) - in the absence of effect; क्रिया (kriyā) - action; न (na) - not; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; सत्य-असत्य-अपि (satya-asatya-api) - even if cause is real or unreal; कारणे (kāraṇe) - in the cause; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; हेतौ (hetau) - in the cause; मे (me) - to me; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be stated; हेतु (hetu) - cause; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - specifically;]
(In the absence of effect, action would not be, even if the cause is real or unreal; therefore, you should specifically state to me the cause in this.)
If there is no effect, action cannot exist, regardless of whether the cause is real or unreal; therefore, you must specifically tell me the cause in this case. (13-1-38)
यद्यहं कारणत्वेन मतो लुब्धक तत्त्वतः। अन्यः प्रयोगे स्यादत्र किल्बिषी जन्तुनाशने ॥१३-१-३९॥
yadyahaṃ kāraṇatvena mato lubdhaka tattvataḥ। anyaḥ prayoge syādatra kilbiṣī jantunāśane ॥13-1-39॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; अहम् (aham) - I; कारणत्वेन (kāraṇatvena) - by the state of being the cause; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; लुब्धक (lubdhaka) - O hunter; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; प्रयोगे (prayoge) - in the act; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; अत्र (atra) - here; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful; जन्तु-नाशने (jantu-nāśane) - in the destruction of creatures;]
(If I am considered by you, O hunter, truly as the cause, another here in the act would be sinful in the destruction of creatures.)
If, O hunter, you truly consider me to be the cause, then anyone else engaged here in the act of destroying creatures would also be sinful. (13-1-39)
लुब्धक उवाच॥

The hunter said.
वध्यस्त्वं मम दुर्बुद्धे बालघाती नृशंसकृत्। भाषसे किं बहु पुनर्वध्यः सन्पन्नगाधम ॥१३-१-४०॥
vadhyas tvaṃ mama durbuddhe bālaghātī nṛśaṃsakṛt। bhāṣase kiṃ bahu punar vadhyaḥ san pannagādham ॥13-1-40॥
[वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; deserving death; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मम (mama) - my; दुर्बुद्धे (durbuddhe) - wicked-minded; of evil intellect; बालघाती (bālaghātī) - child-killer; नृशंसकृत् (nṛśaṃsakṛt) - cruel act; perpetrator of atrocity; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; किं (kiṃ) - why; what; बहु (bahu) - much; many words; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वध्यः (vadhyaḥ) - to be killed; deserving death; सन् (san) - being; पन्नगाधम (pannagādham) - lowest of serpents; vile serpent;]
(To be killed you my wicked-minded child-killer cruel-act (doer), you speak why much again to-be-killed being vile serpent.)
You are to be killed, my wicked-minded, child-killing perpetrator of cruelty. Why do you speak so much again, being a vile serpent who deserves death? (13-1-40)
सर्प उवाच॥

यथा हवींषि जुह्वाना मखे वै लुब्धकर्त्विजः। न फलं प्राप्नुवन्त्यत्र परलोके तथा ह्यहम् ॥१३-१-४१॥
yathā havīṃṣi juhvānā makhe vai lubdhakartvijaḥ। na phalaṃ prāpnuvantyatra paraloke tathā hyaham ॥13-1-41॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; हवींषि (havīṃṣi) - oblations; sacrificial offerings; जुह्वाना (juhvānā) - offering; sacrificing; मखे (makhe) - in the sacrifice; in the ritual; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; लुब्धकर्त्विजः (lubdhakartvijaḥ) - greedy priests; avaricious sacrificers; न (na) - not; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; result; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - attain; obtain; अत्र (atra) - here; परलोके (paraloke) - in the other world; afterlife; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अहम् (aham) - I; myself;]
(Just as greedy priests offering oblations in the sacrifice indeed do not obtain the fruit here or in the other world, so indeed I.)
Just as greedy priests who offer oblations in a sacrifice do not attain the results either here or in the next world, so too am I. (13-1-41)
भीष्म उवाच॥

तथा ब्रुवति तस्मिंस्तु पन्नगे मृत्युचोदिते। आजगाम ततो मृत्युः पन्नगं चाब्रवीदिदम् ॥१३-१-४२॥
tathā bruvati tasmiṃstu pannage mṛtyucodite। ājagāma tato mṛtyuḥ pannagaṃ cābravīdidam ॥13-1-42॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in that manner; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - speaking; saying; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; in that; तु (tu) - but; however; पन्नगे (pannage) - in the serpent; in the snake; मृत्युचोदिते (mṛtyucodite) - impelled by death; prompted by death; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; arrived; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; पन्नगं (pannagaṃ) - the serpent; the snake; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(Thus, while he was speaking, in that serpent impelled by death, then death came and said this to the serpent.)
While the serpent, impelled by death, was thus speaking, then Death arrived and spoke these words to the serpent. (13-1-42)
कालेनाहं प्रणुदितः पन्नग त्वामचूचुदम्। विनाशहेतुर्नास्य त्वमहं वा प्राणिनः शिशोः ॥१३-१-४३॥
kālenāhaṃ praṇuditaḥ pannaga tvām acūcudam। vināśahetur nāsya tvam ahaṃ vā prāṇinaḥ śiśoḥ ॥13-1-43॥
[कालेन (kālena) - by time; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रणुदितः (praṇuditaḥ) - impelled; पन्नग (pannaga) - O serpent; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अचूचुदम् (acūcudam) - I bit; विनाशहेतु: (vināśahetuḥ) - cause of destruction; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - of this; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; वा (vā) - or; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - of the living being; शिशोः (śiśoḥ) - of the child;]
(By time I impelled, O serpent, you I bit. Cause of destruction not of this you, I or of the living being, of the child.)
O serpent, impelled by time, I bit you. Neither you nor I are the cause of this child's destruction. (13-1-43)
यथा वायुर्जलधरान्विकर्षति ततस्ततः। तद्वज्जलदवत्सर्प कालस्याहं वशानुगः ॥१३-१-४४॥
yathā vāyur jaladharān vikarṣati tatastataḥ। tadvaj jaladavat sarpa kālasya ahaṃ vaśānugaḥ ॥13-1-44॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; जलधरान् (jaladharān) - clouds; विकर्षति (vikarṣati) - draws away; ततः (tataḥ) - from here; ततः (tataḥ) - to there; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in the same way; जलदवत् (jaladavat) - like a cloud; सर्प (sarpa) - O serpent; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; अहम् (aham) - I; वशानुगः (vaśānugaḥ) - subject to control;]
(Just as the wind draws away clouds from here to there, in the same way, O serpent, like a cloud, I am subject to the control of time.)
Just as the wind moves clouds from place to place, so too, O serpent, like a cloud, I am under the control of time. (13-1-44)
सात्त्विका राजसाश्चैव तामसा ये च केचन। भावाः कालात्मकाः सर्वे प्रवर्तन्ते हि जन्तुषु ॥१३-१-४५॥
sāttvikā rājasāścaiva tāmasā ye ca kecana। bhāvāḥ kālātmakāḥ sarve pravartante hi jantuṣu ॥13-1-45॥
[सात्त्विकाः (sāttvikāḥ) - of sattva (purity, harmony) nature; राजसाः (rājasāḥ) - of rajas (activity, passion) nature; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तामसाः (tāmasāḥ) - of tamas (inertia, darkness) nature; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; केचन (kecana) - whichever; भावाः (bhāvāḥ) - states; कालात्मकाः (kālātmakāḥ) - having time as their essence; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - arise; हि (hi) - indeed; जन्तुषु (jantuṣu) - among beings;]
(Of sattva nature, of rajas nature and indeed of tamas nature, who and whichever states having time as their essence, all arise indeed among beings.)
All states of sattva, rajas, and tamas, and whichever others there may be, all having time as their essence, indeed arise among beings. (13-1-45)
जङ्गमाः स्थावराश्चैव दिवि वा यदि वा भुवि। सर्वे कालात्मकाः सर्प कालात्मकमिदं जगत् ॥१३-१-४६॥
jaṅgamāḥ sthāvarāścaiva divi vā yadi vā bhuvi। sarve kālātmakāḥ sarpa kālātmakamidaṃ jagat ॥13-1-46॥
[जङ्गमाः (jaṅgamāḥ) - moving beings; स्थावराः (sthāvarāḥ) - stationary beings; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दिवि (divi) - in the sky; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कालात्मकाः (kālātmakāḥ) - having the nature of time; सर्प (sarpa) - O serpent; कालात्मकम् (kālātmakam) - having the nature of time; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जगत् (jagat) - world;]
(Moving beings, stationary beings, and indeed, in the sky or if on the earth, all are of the nature of time; O serpent, this world is of the nature of time.)
All moving and stationary beings, whether in the sky or on earth, are of the nature of time; O serpent, this entire world is of the nature of time. (13-1-46)
प्रवृत्तयश्च या लोके तथैव च निवृत्तयः। तासां विकृतयो याश्च सर्वं कालात्मकं स्मृतम् ॥१३-१-४७॥
pravṛttayaś ca yā loke tathaiva ca nivṛttayaḥ। tāsāṃ vikṛtayo yāś ca sarvaṃ kālātmakam smṛtam ॥13-1-47॥
[प्रवृत्तयः (pravṛttayaḥ) - manifestations; activities; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - which; लोके (loke) - in the world; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; निवृत्तयः (nivṛttayaḥ) - cessations; withdrawals; तासां (tāsāṃ) - of those; विकृतयः (vikṛtayaḥ) - modifications; transformations; याः (yāḥ) - which; च (ca) - and; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कालात्मकं (kālātmakam) - having the nature of time; स्मृतम् (smṛtam) - is considered;]
(Manifestations and which in the world, in the same way and cessations; of those modifications which and all having the nature of time is considered.)
All manifestations and cessations in the world, as well as all their modifications, are considered to be of the nature of time. (13-1-47)
आदित्यश्चन्द्रमा विष्णुरापो वायुः शतक्रतुः। अग्निः खं पृथिवी मित्र ओषध्यो वसवस्तथा ॥१३-१-४८॥
ādityaś candramā viṣṇur āpo vāyuḥ śatakratuḥ। agniḥ khaṃ pṛthivī mitra oṣadhyo vasavas tathā ॥13-1-48॥
[आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the Sun; चन्द्रमा (candramā) - the Moon; विष्णुः (viṣṇuḥ) - Viṣṇu; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; खम् (kham) - sky; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; मित्र (mitra) - Mitra; ओषध्यः (oṣadhyaḥ) - herbs; वसवः (vasavaḥ) - the Vasus; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(The Sun, the Moon, Viṣṇu, waters, wind, Indra, fire, sky, earth, Mitra, herbs, the Vasus, so.)
The Sun, the Moon, Viṣṇu, the waters, wind, Indra, fire, sky, earth, Mitra, herbs, and the Vasus as well. (13-1-48)
सरितः सागराश्चैव भावाभावौ च पन्नग। सर्वे कालेन सृज्यन्ते ह्रियन्ते च तथा पुनः ॥१३-१-४९॥
saritaḥ sāgarāś caiva bhāvābhāvau ca pannaga। sarve kālena sṛjyante hriyante ca tathā punaḥ ॥13-1-49॥
[सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; सागराः (sāgarāḥ) - oceans; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भावाभावौ (bhāvābhāvau) - existence and non-existence; च (ca) - and; पन्नग (pannaga) - O serpent; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कालेन (kālena) - by time; सृज्यन्ते (sṛjyante) - are created; ह्रियन्ते (hriyante) - are destroyed; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Rivers, oceans, and indeed existence and non-existence, O serpent; all by time are created, are destroyed, and thus again.)
O serpent, rivers, oceans, existence and non-existence—all are created and destroyed by time, and so it happens again and again. (13-1-49)
एवं ज्ञात्वा कथं मां त्वं सदोषं सर्प मन्यसे। अथ चैवङ्गते दोषो मयि त्वमपि दोषवान् ॥१३-१-५०॥
evaṃ jñātvā kathaṃ māṃ tvaṃ sadoṣaṃ sarpa manyase। atha caivaṃgate doṣo mayi tvam api doṣavān ॥13-1-50॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; मां (māṃ) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सदोषं (sadoṣaṃ) - with fault; सर्प (sarpa) - O serpent; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; अथ (atha) - then; च (ca) - and; एवम् (evam) - thus; गते (gate) - having occurred; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; मयि (mayi) - in me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; दोषवान् (doṣavān) - possessed of fault;]
(Thus, having known, how me you with fault, O serpent, you think? Then and thus having occurred fault in me, you also possessed of fault.)
Having understood thus, O serpent, how do you consider me to be at fault? If, in this situation, the fault is with me, then you too are at fault. (13-1-50)

nirdoṣaṃ doṣavantaṃ vā na tvā mṛtyo bravīmyaham। tvayāhaṃ codita iti bravīmyetāvadeva tu ॥13-1-51॥
[निर्दोषं (nirdoṣam) - faultless; without defect; दोषवन्तं (doṣavantam) - having fault; possessing defect; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; त्वा (tvā) - you; मृत्यो (mṛtyo) - O Death; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; चोदित (codita) - prompted; incited; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; एतावत् (etāvat) - this much; so far; एव (eva) - only; indeed; तु (tu) - but;]
(Faultless, having fault, or, not you, O Death, I say, I; by you, I, prompted, thus, I say, this much, only, but.)
O Death, whether faultless or having fault, I do not speak to you; I say only this much, that I am prompted by you. (13-1-51)
यदि काले तु दोषोऽस्ति यदि तत्रापि नेष्यते। दोषो नैव परीक्ष्यो मे न ह्यत्राधिकृता वयम् ॥१३-१-५२॥
yadi kāle tu doṣo'sti yadi tatrāpi neṣyate। doṣo naiva parīkṣyo me na hyatrādhikṛtā vayam ॥13-1-52॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; काले (kāle) - in time; तु (tu) - but; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; अस्ति (asti) - is; यदि (yadi) - if; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; नेष्यते (neṣyate) - is led; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; परीक्ष्यः (parīkṣyaḥ) - to be examined; मे (me) - by me; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; अधिकृता (adhikṛtā) - appointed; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(If in time but fault is, if there also is led, fault not indeed to be examined by me, not indeed here appointed we.)
If there is a fault in the timing, and even if one is led there, the fault is not to be examined by me, for we are not appointed here. (13-1-52)
निर्मोक्षस्त्वस्य दोषस्य मया कार्यो यथा तथा। मृत्यो विदोषः स्यामेव यथा तन्मे प्रयोजनम् ॥१३-१-५३॥
nirmokṣas tvasya doṣasya mayā kāryo yathā tathā। mṛtyo vidoṣaḥ syāmeva yathā tanme prayojanam ॥13-1-53॥
[निर्मोक्षः (nirmokṣaḥ) - complete removal; तु (tu) - but; अस्य (asya) - of this; दोषस्य (doṣasya) - of fault; मया (mayā) - by me; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; यथा (yathā) - as; तथा (tathā) - so; मृत्यः (mṛtyaḥ) - O Death; विदोषः (vidoṣaḥ) - free from fault; स्याम् (syām) - I may become; एव (eva) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - my; प्रयोजनम् (prayojanam) - purpose;]
(Complete removal but of this fault by me should be done as so. O Death, free from fault I may become indeed as that my purpose.)
But the complete removal of this fault should be done by me in such a way. O Death, my purpose is that I may indeed become free from fault in this way. (13-1-53)

सर्पोऽथार्जुनकं प्राह श्रुतं ते मृत्युभाषितम्। नानागसं मां पाशेन सन्तापयितुमर्हसि ॥१३-१-५४॥
sarpo'thārjunakaṃ prāha śrutaṃ te mṛtyubhāṣitam। nānāgasaṃ māṃ pāśena santāpayitumarhasi ॥13-1-54॥
[सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - serpent; अथ (atha) - then; अर्जुनकं (arjunakam) - Arjunaka (name); प्राह (prāha) - said; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; ते (te) - by you; मृत्युभाषितम् (mṛtyubhāṣitam) - death-spoken (words); न (na) - not; अनागसं (anāgasaṃ) - innocent; माम् (mām) - me; पाशेन (pāśena) - with a noose; सन्तापयितुम् (santāpayitum) - to afflict; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(The serpent then said to Arjunaka: "The words of death have been heard by you. You ought not to afflict me, who am innocent, with a noose." (13-1-54))
The serpent then said to Arjunaka: "You have heard the words spoken by Death. You should not torment me, who am innocent, with a noose." (13-1-54)
लुब्धक उवाच॥

मृत्योः श्रुतं मे वचनं तव चैव भुजङ्गम। नैव तावद्विदोषत्वं भवति त्वयि पन्नग ॥१३-१-५५॥
mṛtyoḥ śrutaṃ me vacanaṃ tava caiva bhujaṅgama। naiva tāvadvidoṣatvaṃ bhavati tvayi pannaga ॥13-1-55॥
[मृत्योः (mṛtyoḥ) - of death; श्रुतं (śrutam) - heard; मे (me) - by me; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भुजङ्गम (bhujaṅgama) - O serpent; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; विदोषत्वं (vidoṣatvaṃ) - faultiness; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; पन्नग (pannaga) - O snake;]
(Of death heard by me speech your and indeed O serpent not indeed so long faultiness becomes in you O snake)
O serpent, I have heard the words of Death and yours as well; so long, O snake, there is no fault in you. (13-1-55)
मृत्यस्त्वं चैव हेतुर्हि जन्तोरस्य विनाशने। उभयं कारणं मन्ये न कारणमकारणम् ॥१३-१-५६॥
mṛtyas tvaṃ caiva hetur hi jantor asya vināśane। ubhayaṃ kāraṇaṃ manye na kāraṇam akāraṇam ॥13-1-56॥
[मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हेतुः (hetuḥ) - cause; हि (hi) - for; जन्तोः (jantoḥ) - of the being; अस्य (asya) - of this; विनाशने (vināśane) - in destruction; उभयम् (ubhayam) - both; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; मन्ये (manye) - I think; न (na) - not; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; अकारणम् (akāraṇam) - without cause;]
(Death you and indeed cause for of the being of this in destruction. Both cause I think not cause without cause.)
You are death and indeed the cause for the destruction of this being. I think both are causes, not causeless. (13-1-56)
धिङ्मृत्युं च दुरात्मानं क्रूरं दुःखकरं सताम्। त्वां चैवाहं वधिष्यामि पापं पापस्य कारणम् ॥१३-१-५७॥
dhiṅ-mṛtyuṃ ca dur-ātmānaṃ krūraṃ duḥkha-karaṃ satām। tvāṃ caiva ahaṃ vadhiṣyāmi pāpaṃ pāpasya kāraṇam ॥13-1-57॥

(Condemnation to death and to the wicked-souled, cruel, suffering-causing of the good; you and indeed I will slay, the wicked, the cause of the wicked. (13-1-57))
Condemnation upon death and the wicked, cruel one who causes suffering to the good; you, too, I will slay, evil one, the cause of wickedness. (13-1-57)

vivaśau kālavaśagāvāvāṃ taddiṣṭakāriṇau। nāvāṃ doṣeṇa gantavyau yadi samyakprapaśyasi ॥13-1-58॥
[विवशौ (vivaśau) - powerless; (dual); कालवशगौ (kālavaśagau) - subject to time; (dual); आवाम् (āvām) - we two; तद्दिष्टकारिणौ (taddiṣṭakāriṇau) - acting as destined by that (fate); (dual); न (na) - not; आवाम् (āvām) - we two; दोषेण (doṣeṇa) - by fault; गन्तव्यौ (gantavyau) - to be blamed; (dual); यदि (yadi) - if; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; प्रपश्यसि (prapaśyasi) - you see;]
(Powerless, subject to time, we two, acting as destined by that (fate); not we two by fault to be blamed, if properly you see.)
We two are powerless, subject to the control of time, and act as destined by fate; if you see things properly, you will realize that we are not to be blamed for any fault. (13-1-58)
लुब्धक उवाच॥

युवामुभौ कालवशौ यदि वै मृत्युपन्नगौ। हर्षक्रोधौ कथं स्यातामेतदिच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१३-१-५९॥
yuvāmubhau kālavaśau yadi vai mṛtyupannagau। harṣakrodhau kathaṃ syātāmetadicchāmi veditum ॥13-1-59॥
[युवाम् (yuvām) - you two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; कालवशौ (kālavaśau) - subject to time; यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; मृत्युपन्नगौ (mṛtyupannagau) - serpents of death; हर्षक्रोधौ (harṣakrodhau) - joy and anger; कथम् (katham) - how; स्याताम् (syātām) - could be; एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वेदितुम् (veditum) - to know;]
(You two both subject to time if indeed serpents of death joy and anger how could be this I wish to know.)
If you two, both subject to time, are indeed serpents of death, how could joy and anger exist in you? I wish to know this. (13-1-59)

(Whichsoever actions here may be, all are impelled by time. Previously, indeed, this was spoken by me, O hunter, by time. (13-1-60))
Whatever actions may occur here, all are impelled by time. I have already told you this before, O hunter, that it is due to time. (13-1-60)
तस्मादुभौ कालवशावावां तद्दिष्टकारिणौ। नावां दोषेण गन्तव्यौ त्वया लुब्धक कर्हिचित् ॥१३-१-६१॥
tasmād ubhau kālavaśāv āvām tad-diṣṭa-kāriṇau। nāvām doṣeṇa gantavyau tvayā lubdhaka karhicit ॥13-1-61॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; उभौ (ubhau) - both; कालवशौ (kālavaśau) - subject to time; under the control of time; आवाम् (āvām) - we both; तत् (tat) - that; दिष्ट (diṣṭa) - ordained; destined; कारिणौ (kāriṇau) - doers; performers; न (na) - not; आवाम् (āvām) - we both; दोषेण (doṣeṇa) - by fault; by defect; गन्तव्यौ (gantavyau) - should be considered; should be regarded; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; लुब्धक (lubdhaka) - O hunter; कर्हिचित् (karhicit) - at any time; ever;]
(Therefore, both (of us), being under the control of time, we both are performers of that which is ordained; we both should not be considered by you, O hunter, as (being) at fault at any time.)
Therefore, O hunter, both of us are subject to time and are merely carrying out what is destined; you should never consider either of us to be at fault. (13-1-61)
भीष्म उवाच॥

अथोपगम्य कालस्तु तस्मिन्धर्मार्थसंशये। अब्रवीत्पन्नगं मृत्युं लुब्धमर्जुनकं च तम् ॥१३-१-६२॥
athopagamya kālas tu tasmin dharmārthasaṃśaye। abravīt pannagaṃ mṛtyuṃ lubdham arjunakaṃ ca tam ॥13-1-62॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उपगम्य (upagamya) - having approached; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time (personified); तु (tu) - but; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; धर्मार्थसंशये (dharmārthasaṃśaye) - in the doubt regarding dharma and artha; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पन्नगम् (pannagam) - the serpent; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - Death (personified); लुब्धम् (lubdham) - the greedy one; अर्जुनकं (arjunakam) - Arjunaka; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Then, having approached, Time (personified), but, in that doubt regarding dharma and artha, said to the serpent, Death (personified), the greedy one, Arjunaka, and him.)
Then, Time himself, having approached during that doubt about dharma and artha, spoke to the serpent, to Death, to the greedy Arjunaka, and to him. (13-1-62)
काल उवाच॥

नैवाहं नाप्ययं मृत्युर्नायं लुब्धक पन्नगः। किल्बिषी जन्तुमरणे न वयं हि प्रयोजकाः ॥१३-१-६३॥
naivāhaṃ nāpyayaṃ mṛtyurnāyaṃ lubdhaka pannagaḥ। kilbiṣī jantumaraṇe na vayaṃ hi prayojakāḥ ॥13-1-63॥
[न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; अयम् (ayam) - this; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; न (na) - not; अयम् (ayam) - this; लुब्धक (lubdhaka) - hunter; पन्नगः (pannagaḥ) - serpent; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful; जन्तु (jantu) - creature; मरणे (maraṇe) - in the death; न (na) - not; वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रयोजकाः (prayojakāḥ) - causers;]
(Not indeed I, not also this death, not this hunter serpent, sinful in the creature's death, not we indeed causers.)
Neither I nor this death, nor this hunter serpent, are sinful in the death of the creature; indeed, we are not the cause. (13-1-63)
अकरोद्यदयं कर्म तन्नोऽर्जुनक चोदकम्। प्रणाशहेतुर्नान्योऽस्य वध्यतेऽयं स्वकर्मणा ॥१३-१-६४॥
akarodyadayaṃ karma tanno'rjunaka codakam। praṇāśaheturnānyo'sya vadhyate'yaṃ svakarmaṇā ॥13-1-64॥
[अकरोत् (akarot) - did; यद् (yad) - which; अयं (ayaṃ) - this; कर्म (karma) - action; तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - for us; अर्जुनक (arjunaka) - O Arjunaka; चोदकम् (codakam) - instigator; प्रणाशहेतु (praṇāśahetu) - cause of destruction; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; अस्य (asya) - of this; वध्यते (vadhyate) - is slain; अयं (ayaṃ) - this; स्वकर्मणा (svakarmaṇā) - by own action;]
(Did which this action, that for us, O Arjunaka, instigator. Cause of destruction not other of this, is slain this by own action.)
O Arjunaka, the action which this one did, that is the instigator for us. There is no other cause of destruction for this; this one is slain by his own action. (13-1-64)
यदनेन कृतं कर्म तेनायं निधनं गतः। विनाशहेतुः कर्मास्य सर्वे कर्मवशा वयम् ॥१३-१-६५॥
yadanena kṛtaṃ karma tenāyaṃ nidhanaṃ gataḥ। vināśahetuḥ karmāsya sarve karmavaśā vayam ॥13-1-65॥
[यत् (yat) - which; अनेन (anena) - by this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; कर्म (karma) - action; तेन (tena) - by that; अयम् (ayam) - this; निधनम् (nidhanam) - death; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone; विनाशहेतुः (vināśahetuḥ) - cause of destruction; कर्म (karma) - action; अस्य (asya) - of him; सर्वे (sarve) - all; कर्मवशाः (karmavaśāḥ) - subject to action; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Which action was done by this (person), by that this one has gone to death. The cause of destruction is his action; all we are subject to action. (13-1-65))
Whatever action was performed by him, by that he has met his death. His action is the cause of destruction; all of us are subject to the power of action. (13-1-65)
कर्मदायादवाँल्लोकः कर्मसम्बन्धलक्षणः। कर्माणि चोदयन्तीह यथान्योन्यं तथा वयम् ॥१३-१-६६॥
karmadāyādavāṃllokaḥ karmasambandhalakṣaṇaḥ। karmāṇi codayantīha yathānyonyaṃ tathā vayam ॥13-1-66॥
[कर्म (karma) - action; दायाद (dāyāda) - heir; वाँल्लोकः (vāṃllokaḥ) - worlds (who are); कर्म (karma) - action; सम्बन्ध (sambandha) - connection; लक्षणः (lakṣaṇaḥ) - characterized by; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; च (ca) - and; उदयन्ति (udayanti) - impel; इह (iha) - here; यथा (yathā) - just as; अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; तथा (tathā) - so; वयम् (vayam) - we;]
(Action heir worlds (who are) action connection characterized by; actions and impel here just as each other so we.)
The worlds that are heirs of action are characterized by connection with action; here, actions impel each other, and so do we. (13-1-66)
यथा मृत्पिण्डतः कर्ता कुरुते यद्यदिच्छति। एवमात्मकृतं कर्म मानवः प्रतिपद्यते ॥१३-१-६७॥
yathā mṛtpiṇḍataḥ kartā kurute yadyadicchati। evamātmakṛtaṃ karma mānavaḥ pratipadyate ॥13-1-67॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner that; मृत्पिण्डतः (mṛtpiṇḍataḥ) - from a lump of clay; कर्ता (kartā) - the maker; doer; कुरुते (kurute) - does; makes; यद्यद् (yadyad) - whatever; इच्छति (icchati) - desires; wishes; एवम् (evam) - so; in this way; आत्मकृतम् (ātmakṛtam) - self-made; done by oneself; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man; human; प्रतिपद्यते (pratipadyate) - obtains; acquires; experiences;]
(Just as from a lump of clay, the maker does whatever he desires, so the human obtains the action done by himself.)
Just as a craftsman shapes whatever he wishes from a lump of clay, so too a person experiences the results of actions performed by himself. (13-1-67)
यथा छायातपौ नित्यं सुसम्बद्धौ निरन्तरम्। तथा कर्म च कर्ता च सम्बद्धावात्मकर्मभिः ॥१३-१-६८॥
yathā chāyātapau nityaṃ susambaddhau nirantaram। tathā karma ca kartā ca sambaddhau ātmakarmabhiḥ ॥13-1-68॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; छाया (chāyā) - shadow; अतपौ (atapau) - and sunlight; (dual); नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सुसम्बद्धौ (susambaddhau) - well-connected; closely joined; (dual); निरन्तरम् (nirantaram) - without interruption; continuously; तथा (tathā) - so; in the same way; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; च (ca) - and; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; agent; च (ca) - and; सम्बद्धौ (sambaddhau) - connected; joined; (dual); आत्मकर्मभिः (ātmakarmabhiḥ) - by one's own actions; with self-actions; (instrumental plural);]
(Just as shadow and sunlight are always well-connected, without interruption, so action and the doer are connected by one's own actions.)
Just as shadow and sunlight are always closely joined without interruption, so too are action and the doer bound together by one's own actions. (13-1-68)
एवं नाहं न वै मृत्युर्न सर्पो न तथा भवान्। न चेयं ब्राह्मणी वृद्धा शिशुरेवात्र कारणम् ॥१३-१-६९॥
evaṁ nāhaṁ na vai mṛtyur na sarpo na tathā bhavān। na ceyaṁ brāhmaṇī vṛddhā śiśur evātra kāraṇam ॥13-1-69॥
[एवं (evaṁ) - thus; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; वै (vai) - indeed; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; न (na) - not; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - serpent; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; भवान् (bhavān) - you; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); ब्राह्मणी (brāhmaṇī) - brāhmaṇa woman; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - old; शिशुः (śiśuḥ) - child; एव (eva) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause;]
(Thus not I, not indeed death, not serpent, not so you; not and this brāhmaṇa woman old, child indeed here cause.)
Thus, neither I, nor indeed death, nor the serpent, nor you are the cause; nor is this old brāhmaṇa woman, the child alone is the cause here. (13-1-69)
तस्मिंस्तथा ब्रुवाणे तु ब्राह्मणी गौतमी नृप। स्वकर्मप्रत्ययाँल्लोकान्मत्वार्जुनकमब्रवीत् ॥१३-१-७०॥
tasmiṁs tathā bruvāṇe tu brāhmaṇī gautamī nṛpa। svakarmapratyayāṁl lokān matvā arjunakam abravīt ॥13-1-70॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; तथा (tathā) - thus; ब्रुवाणे (bruvāṇe) - speaking; तु (tu) - but; ब्राह्मणी (brāhmaṇī) - the brāhmaṇa woman; गौतमी (gautamī) - Gautamī; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; स्वकर्मप्रत्ययान् (svakarmapratyayān) - those whose belief is in their own actions; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; अर्जुनकम् (arjunakam) - to Arjunaka; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(In him thus speaking but the brāhmaṇa woman Gautamī, O king, those whose belief is in their own actions, worlds having considered, to Arjunaka said.)
O king, while he was thus speaking, the brāhmaṇa woman Gautamī, having considered the worlds attained by those whose belief is in their own actions, spoke to Arjunaka. (13-1-70)
नैव कालो न भुजगो न मृत्युरिह कारणम्। स्वकर्मभिरयं बालः कालेन निधनं गतः ॥१३-१-७१॥
naiva kālo na bhujago na mṛtyuriha kāraṇam। svakarmabhirayam bālaḥ kālena nidhanaṃ gataḥ ॥13-1-71॥
[नैव (na eva) - not indeed; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; न (na) - not; भुजगः (bhujagaḥ) - serpent; न (na) - not; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; इह (iha) - here; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; स्वकर्मभिः (svakarmabhiḥ) - by his own actions; अयम् (ayam) - this; बालः (bālaḥ) - boy; कालेन (kālena) - by time; निधनम् (nidhanaṃ) - death; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(Not indeed time, not serpent, not death here (are) the cause; by his own actions this boy by time to death has gone.)
Neither time, nor the serpent, nor death itself is the cause here; by his own actions, this boy has met his end through the operation of time. (13-1-71)
मया च तत्कृतं कर्म येनायं मे मृतः सुतः। यातु कालस्तथा मृत्युर्मुञ्चार्जुनक पन्नगम् ॥१३-१-७२॥
mayā ca tatkṛtaṃ karma yenāyaṃ me mṛtaḥ sutaḥ। yātu kālas tathā mṛtyur muñcārjunaka pannagam ॥13-1-72॥

(By me and that done action by which this my son is dead. Let Time and thus Death release, O Arjunaka, the serpent. (13-1-72))

एतच्छ्रुत्वा शमं गच्छ मा भूश्चिन्तापरो नृप। स्वकर्मप्रत्ययाँल्लोकांस्त्रीन्विद्धि मनुजर्षभ ॥१३-१-७४॥
etat-śrutvā śamaṃ gaccha mā bhūś-cintāparaḥ nṛpa। sva-karma-pratyayān lokān trīn viddhi manuja-ṛṣabha ॥13-1-74॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शमम् (śamam) - tranquility; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; मा (mā) - do not; भूः (bhūḥ) - be; चिन्तापरः (cintāparaḥ) - absorbed in anxiety; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; स्वकर्मप्रत्ययान् (sva-karma-pratyayān) - caused by one's own actions; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; मनुजर्षभ (manuja-ṛṣabha) - O best of men;]
(Having heard this, go to tranquility; do not be absorbed in anxiety, O king. Know the three worlds as caused by one's own actions, O best of men.)
After hearing this, attain peace; do not be anxious, O king. Know that the three worlds arise from one's own actions, O best of men. (13-1-74)
न तु त्वया कृतं पार्थ नापि दुर्योधनेन वै। कालेन तत्कृतं विद्धि विहता येन पार्थिवाः ॥१३-१-७५॥
na tu tvayā kṛtaṃ pārtha nāpi duryodhanena vai। kālena tatkṛtaṃ viddhi vihatā yena pārthivāḥ ॥13-1-75॥

(But not by you done, O Pārtha, nor also by Duryodhana indeed; by time that done, know, destroyed by whom the kings.)
But, O Pārtha, it was not done by you, nor indeed by Duryodhana; know that it was done by Time, by whom the kings have been destroyed. (13-1-75)

ity etad vacanaṃ śrutvā babhūva vigatajvaraḥ। yudhiṣṭhiro mahātejāḥ papraccha idaṃ ca dharmavit ॥13-1-76॥

(Thus, having heard this speech, became free from fever; Yudhishthira of great energy asked this also, the knower of dharma.)
Having heard these words, Yudhishthira, the highly energetic knower of dharma, became free from fever and asked this as well. (13-1-76)
