भूयस्तु श्रोतुमिच्छामि धर्मार्थसहितं नृप। कथ्यमानं त्वया किञ्चित्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-२-२॥

रत्नैर्धनैश्च पशुभिः सस्यैश्चापि पृथग्विधैः। नगरं विषयश्चास्य प्रतिपूर्णं तदाभवत् ॥१३-२-१४॥

न तस्य विषये चाभूत्कृपणो नापि दुर्गतः। व्याधितो वा कृशो वापि तस्मिन्नाभून्नरः क्वचित् ॥१३-२-१५॥
na tasya viṣaye cābhūt kṛpaṇo nāpi durgataḥ। vyādhito vā kṛśo vāpi tasmin nābhūn naraḥ kvacit ॥13-2-15॥

सुदक्षिणो मधुरवागनसूयुर्जितेन्द्रियः। धर्मात्मा चानृशंसश्च विक्रान्तोऽथाविकत्थनः ॥१३-२-१६॥
sudakṣiṇo madhuravāganasūyurjitendriyaḥ। dharmātmā cānṛśaṃsaśca vikrānto'thāvikatthanaḥ ॥13-2-16॥

(Her Agni desired directly, the princess beautiful. Having become and brāhmaṇa directly chose (for marriage) him, the king.)

(Bad deed my what indeed might be, your or, best of twice-born; by which destruction has gone fire, done among wicked men like.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, what bad deed might have been done by me or by you, by which the fire has perished, as it happens among wicked men? (13-2-24)
न ह्यल्पं दुष्कृतं नोऽस्ति येनाग्निर्नाशमागतः। भवतां वाथ वा मह्यं तत्त्वेनैतद्विमृश्यताम् ॥१३-२-२५॥

एतद्राज्ञो वचः श्रुत्वा विप्रास्ते भरतर्षभ। नियता वाग्यताश्चैव पावकं शरणं ययुः ॥१३-२-२६॥

(Having heard this speech of the king, the Brāhmaṇas, O bull among the Bharatas, self-controlled and restrained in speech indeed, went to fire as refuge.)
O best of the Bharatas, when the Brāhmaṇas heard this speech of the king, being self-controlled and silent, they went to the fire for refuge. (13-2-26)
तान्दर्शयामास तदा भगवान्हव्यवाहनः। स्वं रूपं दीप्तिमत्कृत्वा शरदर्कसमद्युतिः ॥१३-२-२७॥
tāndarśayāmāsa tadā bhagavānhavyavāhanaḥ। svaṃ rūpaṃ dīptimatkṛtvā śaradarkasamadyutiḥ ॥13-2-27॥

(Accepted and Agni her princess beautiful by the rite as prescribed by the Veda of Vasu stream like in the sacrifice.)

तस्या रूपेण शीलेन कुलेन वपुषा श्रिया। अभवत्प्रीतिमानग्निर्गर्भं तस्यां समादधे ॥१३-२-३५॥

तस्यां समभवत्पुत्रो नाम्नाग्नेयः सुदर्शनः। शिशुरेवाध्यगात्सर्वं स च ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥१३-२-३६॥

तामथौघवतीं राजन्स पावकसुतोऽब्रवीत्। अतिथेः प्रतिकूलं ते न कर्तव्यं कथञ्चन ॥१३-२-४१॥
tām athaughavatīṃ rājans pāvakasuto'bravīt। atitheḥ pratikūlaṃ te na kartavyaṃ kathaṃcana ॥13-2-41॥

Then, O king, the son of Pāvaka said to Oghavatī: "You must never do anything contrary to a guest in any way." (13-2-41)
येन येन च तुष्येत नित्यमेव त्वयातिथिः। अप्यात्मनः प्रदानेन न ते कार्या विचारणा ॥१३-२-४२॥
yena yena ca tuṣyeta nityam eva tvayātithiḥ। apy ātmanaḥ pradānena na te kāryā vicāraṇā ॥13-2-42॥
[येन (yena) - by which; येन (yena) - by which; च (ca) - and; तुष्येत (tuṣyeta) - he may be satisfied; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; अपि (api) - even; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by giving; न (na) - not; ते (te) - for you; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration;]
(By whichever means the guest may be satisfied always indeed by you, even by giving of oneself, for you consideration should not be done.)
By whatever means the guest may always be satisfied by you, even if it requires giving of yourself, you should not hesitate or deliberate. (13-2-42)
एतद्व्रतं मम सदा हृदि सम्परिवर्तते। गृहस्थानां हि सुश्रोणि नातिथेर्विद्यते परम् ॥१३-२-४३॥
etadvrataṃ mama sadā hṛdi samparivartate। gṛhasthānāṃ hi suśroṇi nātithervidyate param ॥13-2-43॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; मम (mama) - my; सदा (sadā) - always; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (my) heart; सम् (sam) - completely; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - revolves; गृहस्थानाम् (gṛhasthānām) - of householders; हि (hi) - indeed; सुश्रोणि (suśroṇi) - O beautiful-hipped (lady); न (na) - not; अतिथेः (atitheḥ) - than a guest; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; परम् (param) - higher;]
(This vow my always in (my) heart completely revolves. Of householders indeed, O beautiful-hipped (lady), not than a guest exists higher.)
This vow always revolves in my heart: For householders, O beautiful-hipped one, there is nothing greater than a guest. (13-2-43)
प्रमाणं यदि वामोरु वचस्ते मम शोभने। इदं वचनमव्यग्रा हृदि त्वं धारयेः सदा ॥१३-२-४४॥
pramāṇaṃ yadi vāmoru vacas te mama śobhane। idaṃ vacanam avyagrā hṛdi tvaṃ dhāryeḥ sadā ॥13-2-44॥
[प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - proof; authority; यदि (yadi) - if; वामोरु (vāmoru) - O beautiful-thighed one; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; speech; ते (te) - your; मम (mama) - my; शोभने (śobhane) - O beautiful one; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; statement; अव्यग्रा (avyagrā) - undistracted; unagitated; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (your) heart; त्वम् (tvam) - you; धारयेः (dhāryeḥ) - should hold; should bear; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Proof if O beautiful-thighed one word your my O beautiful one. This statement undistracted in (your) heart you should hold always.)
If my word is proof for you, O beautiful-thighed one, O beautiful lady, then you should always hold this statement undistracted in your heart. (13-2-44)
निष्क्रान्ते मयि कल्याणि तथा संनिहितेऽनघे। नातिथिस्तेऽवमन्तव्यः प्रमाणं यद्यहं तव ॥१३-२-४५॥
niṣkrānte mayi kalyāṇi tathā saṁnihite'naghe। nātithiste'vamantavyaḥ pramāṇaṁ yadyahaṁ tava ॥13-2-45॥
[निष्क्रान्ते (niṣkrānte) - having gone out; मयि (mayi) - in me; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; तथा (tathā) - also; संनिहिते (saṁnihite) - being present; अनघे (anaghe) - O sinless one; न (na) - not; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; ते (te) - your; अवमन्तव्यः (avamantavyaḥ) - should be disregarded; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - authority; यदि (yadi) - if; अहम् (aham) - I; तव (tava) - your;]
(When I have gone out, O auspicious one, and also when I am present, O sinless one, a guest should not be disregarded by you, if I am your authority.)
O auspicious and sinless one, whether I am absent or present, a guest should never be disregarded by you, if you consider me your authority. (13-2-45)
तमब्रवीदोघवती यता मूर्ध्नि कृताञ्जलिः। न मे त्वद्वचनात्किञ्चिदकर्तव्यं कथञ्चन ॥१३-२-४६॥
tam abravīd oghavatī yatā mūrdhni kṛtāñjaliḥ। na me tvad-vacanāt kiñcid akartavyaṃ kathañcana ॥13-2-46॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ओघवती (oghavatī) - Oghavatī; यता (yatā) - with; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; त्वद्वचनात् (tvad-vacanāt) - from your word; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अकर्तव्यम् (akartavyam) - not to be done; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(Him said Oghavatī with on the head with joined palms. Not by me from your word anything not to be done in any way. (13-2-46))
Oghavatī, with joined palms on her head, said to him: "By me, nothing that you say will ever be left undone in any way." (13-2-46)
जिगीषमाणं तु गृहे तदा मृत्युः सुदर्शनम्। पृष्ठतोऽन्वगमद्राजन्रन्ध्रान्वेषी तदा सदा ॥१३-२-४७॥
jigīṣamāṇaṃ tu gṛhe tadā mṛtyuḥ sudarśanam। pṛṣṭhato'nvagamadrājanrandhrānveṣī tadā sadā ॥13-2-47॥
[जिगीषमाणम् (jigīṣamāṇam) - desiring to conquer; तु (tu) - but; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; तदा (tadā) - then; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; सुदर्शनम् (sudarśanam) - Sudarshana; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अन्वगमत् (anvagamat) - followed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; रन्ध्र (randhra) - opening; अन्वेषी (anveṣī) - seeking; तदा (tadā) - then; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Desiring to conquer but in the house then death Sudarshana from behind followed O king opening seeking then always.)
O king, when Sudarshana was desiring to conquer, at that time, death always followed him into the house from behind, seeking an opening. (13-2-47)
इध्मार्थं तु गते तस्मिन्नग्निपुत्रे सुदर्शने। अतिथिर्ब्राह्मणः श्रीमांस्तामाहौघवतीं तदा ॥१३-२-४८॥
idhmārthaṃ tu gate tasminnagniputre sudarśane। atithirbrāhmaṇaḥ śrīmāṃstāmāhaughavatīṃ tadā ॥13-2-48॥
[इध्मार्थं (idhmārtham) - for the sake of sacrificial fuel; तु (tu) - but; गते (gate) - having gone; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him; अग्निपुत्रे (agniputre) - in the son of Agni; सुदर्शने (sudarśane) - Sudarsana; अतिथि: (atithiḥ) - guest; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; ताम् (tām) - her; आह (āha) - said; ओघवतीम् (aughavatīm) - Oghavati; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(But for the sake of sacrificial fuel, when Sudarsana, the son of Agni, had gone, then the prosperous Brahmin guest said to her, Oghavati.)
But when Sudarsana, the son of Agni, had gone to fetch sacrificial fuel, at that time the prosperous Brahmin guest said to Oghavati. (13-2-48)
आतिथ्यं दत्तमिच्छामि त्वयाद्य वरवर्णिनि। प्रमाणं यदि धर्मस्ते गृहस्थाश्रमसंमतः ॥१३-२-४९॥
ātithyaṃ dattamicchāmi tvayādya varavarṇini. pramāṇaṃ yadi dharmaste gṛhasthāśramasaṃmataḥ ॥13-2-49॥
[आतिथ्यं (ātithyaṃ) - hospitality; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; वरवर्णिनि (varavarṇini) - O best-complexioned lady; प्रमाणं (pramāṇam) - authority; यदि (yadi) - if; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; ते (te) - your; गृहस्थाश्रम (gṛhasthāśrama) - householder stage; संमतः (saṃmataḥ) - approved;]
(Hospitality given I desire by you today, O best-complexioned lady; authority if duty your householder stage approved.)
O best-complexioned lady, if your duty as a householder is approved as authority, then today I desire hospitality given by you. (13-2-49)
इत्युक्ता तेन विप्रेण राजपुत्री यशस्विनी। विधिना प्रतिजग्राह वेदोक्तेन विशां पते ॥१३-२-५०॥
ityuktā tena vipreṇa rājaputrī yaśasvinī। vidhinā pratijagrāha vedoktena viśāṃ pate ॥13-2-50॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - addressed; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the brāhmaṇa; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - illustrious; विधिना (vidhinā) - according to the rite; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - accepted; वेदोक्तेन (vedoktena) - as prescribed in the Veda; विशां (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Thus addressed by him, by the brāhmaṇa, the illustrious princess, according to the rite, accepted as prescribed in the Veda, O lord of the people.)
Thus, when addressed by the brāhmaṇa, the illustrious princess accepted (the rite) according to the Vedic prescription, O lord of the people. (13-2-50)
आसनं चैव पाद्यं च तस्मै दत्त्वा द्विजातये। प्रोवाचौघवती विप्रं केनार्थः किं ददामि ते ॥१३-२-५१॥
āsanaṃ caiva pādyaṃ ca tasmai dattvā dvijātaye। provācaughavatī vipraṃ kenārthaḥ kiṃ dadāmi te ॥13-2-51॥
[आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; च (ca) - and; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; द्विजातये (dvijātaye) - to the twice-born; प्रोवाच (provāca) - she said; ओघवती (aughavatī) - Oghavatī; विप्रम् (vipram) - the Brāhmaṇa; केन (kena) - for what; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; किम् (kim) - what; ददामि (dadāmi) - shall I give; ते (te) - to you;]
(Seat and indeed water for washing feet and to him having given to the twice-born, she said Oghavatī to the Brāhmaṇa: for what purpose, what shall I give to you?)
Having offered a seat and water for washing the feet to the twice-born, Oghavatī said to the Brāhmaṇa: "For what purpose, what shall I give to you?" (13-2-51)
तामब्रवीत्ततो विप्रो राजपुत्रीं सुदर्शनाम्। त्वया ममार्थः कल्याणि निर्विशङ्के तदाचर ॥१३-२-५२॥
tām abravīt tato vipraḥ rājaputrīṃ sudarśanām। tvayā mama arthaḥ kalyāṇi nirviśaṅke tad ācara ॥13-2-52॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; राजपुत्रीं (rājaputrīm) - princess; सुदर्शनाम् (sudarśanām) - beautiful; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मम (mama) - my; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; निर्विशङ्के (nirviśaṅke) - without hesitation; तत् (tat) - that; आचर (ācara) - do;]
(Her said then the brāhmaṇa (to) the beautiful princess: By you my purpose, O auspicious one, without hesitation that do.)
Then the brāhmaṇa said to the beautiful princess: "O auspicious one, fulfill my purpose without hesitation." (13-2-52)
यदि प्रमाणं धर्मस्ते गृहस्थाश्रमसंमतः। प्रदानेनात्मनो राज्ञि कर्तुमर्हसि मे प्रियम् ॥१३-२-५३॥
yadi pramāṇaṃ dharmas te gṛhasthāśramasaṃmataḥ। pradānenātmano rājñi kartum arhasi me priyam ॥13-2-53॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - authority; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; ते (te) - your; गृहस्थाश्रमसंमतः (gṛhasthāśramasaṃmataḥ) - approved by the householder stage; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by giving; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O king; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; मे (me) - for me; प्रियम् (priyam) - a favor;]
(If authority is your righteousness, approved by the householder stage, by giving of yourself, O king, you ought to do a favor for me.)
If your standard of righteousness is what is approved by the householder stage, O king, then by giving of yourself, you ought to do me a favor. (13-2-53)
तथा सञ्छन्द्यमानोऽन्यैरीप्सितैर्नृपकन्यया। नान्यमात्मप्रदानात्स तस्या वव्रे वरं द्विजः ॥१३-२-५४॥
tathā sañchandyamāno'nyairīpsitairnṛpakanyayā। nānyamātmapradānāts tasyā vavre varaṃ dvijaḥ ॥13-2-54॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; सञ्छन्द्यमानः (sañchandyamānaḥ) - being persuaded; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; ईप्सितैः (īpsitaiḥ) - desired; नृपकन्यया (nṛpakanyayā) - by the king's daughter; न (na) - not; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; आत्मप्रदानात् (ātmapradānāt) - than self-giving; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; वरम् (varam) - boon; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born (Brahmin);]
(Thus, being persuaded by others desired by the king's daughter, not another than self-giving, he of her chose boon the twice-born.)
Thus, although being persuaded by others whom the king's daughter desired, the twice-born did not choose any boon from her except her own self-giving. (13-2-54)
सा तु राजसुता स्मृत्वा भर्तुर्वचनमादितः। तथेति लज्जमाना सा तमुवाच द्विजर्षभम् ॥१३-२-५५॥
sā tu rājasutā smṛtvā bhartur vacanam āditaḥ। tatheti lajjamānā sā tam uvāca dvijarṣabham ॥13-2-55॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; राजसुता (rājasutā) - princess; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - having remembered; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of (her) husband; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from the beginning; तथा (tathā) - so; इति (iti) - thus; लज्जमाना (lajjamānā) - being ashamed; सा (sā) - she; तम् (tam) - to him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; द्विजर्षभम् (dvijarṣabham) - the best of twice-born (brāhmaṇa);]
(She but the princess having remembered the word of (her) husband from the beginning, so thus being ashamed she to him said the best of twice-born (brāhmaṇa).)
But the princess, recalling her husband's words from the beginning, thus, being ashamed, spoke to that best of brāhmaṇas. (13-2-55)
ततो रहः स विप्रर्षिः सा चैवोपविवेश ह। संस्मृत्य भर्तुर्वचनं गृहस्थाश्रमकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१३-२-५६॥
tato rahaḥ sa viprarṣiḥ sā caivopaviveśa ha। saṁsmṛtya bharturvacanaṁ gṛhasthāśramakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ॥13-2-56॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; रहः (rahaḥ) - in private; स (sa) - he; विप्रर्षिः (viprarṣiḥ) - the sage among Brāhmaṇas; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; उपविवेश (upaviveśa) - sat near; ह (ha) - indeed; संस्मृत्य (saṁsmṛtya) - having remembered; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; वचनं (vacanam) - word; गृहस्थाश्रम (gṛhasthāśrama) - householder stage; काङ्क्षिणः (kāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring;]
(From then, in private, he, the sage among Brāhmaṇas, and she indeed sat near, indeed; having remembered the husband's word, desiring the householder stage.)
Then, in private, the Brāhmaṇa sage and she sat together; recalling her husband's words, desiring the householder's life. (13-2-56)
अथेध्मान्समुपादाय स पावकिरुपागमत्। मृत्युना रौद्रभावेन नित्यं बन्धुरिवान्वितः ॥१३-२-५७॥
athedhmān samupādāya sa pāvakir upāgamat। mṛtyunā raudrabhāvena nityaṃ bandhur ivānvitaḥ ॥13-2-57॥
[अथ (atha) - then; इध्मान् (idhmān) - sacrificial sticks; समुपादाय (samupādāya) - having completely taken; सः (saḥ) - he; पावकि (pāvaki) - to the fire; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached; मृत्युना (mṛtyunā) - by death; रौद्रभावेन (raudrabhāvena) - with fierce disposition; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; बन्धुः (bandhuḥ) - companion; इव (iva) - like; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - accompanied;]
(Then, having completely taken the sacrificial sticks, he approached the fire, always accompanied by death with fierce disposition, like a companion.)
Then, having gathered the sacrificial sticks, he approached the fire, always accompanied by death with a fierce nature, like a constant companion. (13-2-57)
ततस्त्वाश्रममागम्य स पावकसुतस्तदा। तामाजुहावौघवतीं क्वासि यातेति चासकृत् ॥१३-२-५८॥
tatastvāśramamāgamya sa pāvakasutastadā। tāmājuhāvaughavatīṃ kvāsi yāteti cāsakṛt ॥13-2-58॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्व् (tv) - indeed; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; स (sa) - he; पावकसुतः (pāvakasutaḥ) - son of Pāvaka (Agni); तदा (tadā) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; आजुहाव (ājuhāva) - called; औघवतीम् (aughavatīm) - O Aghavati (name); क्व (kva) - where; असि (asi) - are (you); याते (yāte) - gone; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly;]
(Then indeed, having come to the hermitage, he, the son of Pāvaka, then called her, "O Aghavati, where are you gone?" thus and repeatedly.)
Then, having reached the hermitage, the son of Pāvaka repeatedly called out to her, "O Aghavati, where have you gone?" (13-2-58)
तस्मै प्रतिवचः सा तु भर्त्रे न प्रददौ तदा। कराभ्यां तेन विप्रेण स्पृष्टा भर्तृव्रता सती ॥१३-२-५९॥
tasmai prativacaḥ sā tu bhartre na pradadau tadā। karābhyāṃ tena vipreṇa spṛṣṭā bhartṛvratā satī ॥13-2-59॥
[तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; प्रतिवचः (prativacaḥ) - reply; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; भर्त्रे (bhartre) - to the husband; न (na) - not; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; तदा (tadā) - then; कराभ्यां (karābhyāṃ) - with (her) two hands; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the brāhmaṇa; स्पृष्टा (spṛṣṭā) - touched; भर्तृव्रता (bhartṛvratā) - devoted to her husband; सती (satī) - chaste woman;]
(To him, reply, she, but, to the husband, not, gave, then. With (her) two hands, by him, by the brāhmaṇa, touched, devoted to her husband, chaste woman.)
But she, devoted to her husband and chaste, did not give a reply to him then; touched by the brāhmaṇa with his two hands. (13-2-59)
उच्छिष्टास्मीति मन्वाना लज्जिता भर्तुरेव च। तूष्णीम्भूताभवत्साध्वी न चोवाचाथ किञ्चन ॥१३-२-६०॥
ucchiṣṭāsmīti manvānā lajjitā bhartureva ca। tūṣṇīṃbhūtābhavatsādhvī na covācātha kiñcana ॥13-2-60॥
[उच्छिष्टा (ucchiṣṭā) - having remnants; impure after eating; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; मन्वाना (manvānā) - thinking; considering; लज्जिता (lajjitā) - ashamed; embarrassed; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; एव (eva) - indeed; only; च (ca) - and; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; भूता (bhūtā) - having become; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; साध्वी (sādhvī) - the virtuous woman; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; अथ (atha) - then; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(Thinking 'I am impure after eating', ashamed, of her husband indeed and, having become silent, the virtuous woman became, and did not then speak anything.)
Thinking 'I am impure after eating' and feeling ashamed before her husband, the virtuous woman became silent and did not say anything then. (13-2-60)
अथ तां पुनरेवेदं प्रोवाच स सुदर्शनः। क्व सा साध्वी क्व सा याता गरीयः किमतो मम ॥१३-२-६१॥
atha tāṃ punarevedaṃ provāca sa sudarśanaḥ। kva sā sādhvī kva sā yātā garīyaḥ kimato mama ॥13-2-61॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; सः (saḥ) - he; सुदर्शनः (sudarśanaḥ) - Sudarshana; क्व (kva) - where; सा (sā) - she; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous woman; क्व (kva) - where; सा (sā) - she; याता (yātā) - gone; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - greater; किम् (kim) - what; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; मम (mama) - to me;]
(Then to her again indeed this spoke he Sudarshana. Where she virtuous woman, where she gone, greater what than this to me (13-2-61))
Then Sudarshana again spoke these words to her: "Where is that virtuous lady? Where has she gone? What could be greater than this for me?" (13-2-61)
पतिव्रता सत्यशीला नित्यं चैवार्जवे रता। कथं न प्रत्युदेत्यद्य स्मयमाना यथा पुरा ॥१३-२-६२॥
pativratā satyaśīlā nityaṃ caivārjave ratā। kathaṃ na pratyudet-yadya smayamānā yathā purā ॥13-2-62॥
[पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; wife faithful to husband; सत्यशीला (satyaśīlā) - of true character; truthful in conduct; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; at all times; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; आर्जवे (ārjave) - in uprightness; in honesty; रता (ratā) - engaged; devoted; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; न (na) - not; प्रत्युदेत्य (pratyudetya) - coming forward to meet; having come to meet; अद्य (adya) - today; स्मयमाना (smayamānā) - smiling; being proud; यथा (yathā) - as; like; पुरा (purā) - formerly; before;]
(Devoted to husband, of true character, always and indeed engaged in uprightness, how not coming forward to meet today, smiling as before.)
She, devoted to her husband, of true character, always engaged in uprightness, why does she not come forward to meet me today, smiling as she used to before? (13-2-62)
उटजस्थस्तु तं विप्रः प्रत्युवाच सुदर्शनम्। अतिथिं विद्धि सम्प्राप्तं पावके ब्राह्मणं च माम् ॥१३-२-६३॥
uṭajasthastu taṃ vipraḥ pratyuvāca sudarśanam। atithiṃ viddhi samprāptaṃ pāvake brāhmaṇaṃ ca mām ॥13-2-63॥
[उटजस्थः (uṭajasthaḥ) - hut-dwelling; तु (tu) - but; तं (taṃ) - him; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; सुदर्शनम् (sudarśanam) - Sudarśana; अतिथिं (atithiṃ) - guest; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; सम्प्राप्तं (samprāptaṃ) - arrived; पावके (pāvake) - in the fire; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me;]
(But the hut-dwelling brāhmaṇa replied to him, Sudarśana: Know the guest who has arrived in the fire to be a brāhmaṇa and me.)
But the brāhmaṇa living in the hut replied to Sudarśana: "Know that the guest who has arrived in the fire is a brāhmaṇa, and that is me." (13-2-63)
अनया छन्द्यमानोऽहं भार्यया तव सत्तम। तैस्तैरतिथिसत्कारैरार्जवेऽस्या दृढं मनः ॥१३-२-६४॥
anayā chandyamāno'haṃ bhāryayā tava sattama। taistairatithisatkārairārjave'syā dṛḍhaṃ manaḥ ॥13-2-64॥
[अनया (anayā) - by this (woman); छन्द्यमानः (chandyamānaḥ) - being pleased; अहम् (aham) - I; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - by the wife; तव (tava) - your; सत्तम (sattama) - O best (one); तैः तैः (taiḥ taiḥ) - by those various; अतिथि-सत्कारैः (atithi-satkāraiḥ) - by guest-honourings; आर्जवे (ārjave) - in sincerity; अस्या (asyāḥ) - of her; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firm; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(By this (woman), being pleased, I, by the wife, your, O best (one), by those various guest-honourings, in sincerity, of her, firm mind.)
O best one, being pleased by your wife, by her various sincere acts of hospitality towards guests, my mind has become firmly attached to her. (13-2-64)
अनेन विधिना सेयं मामर्चति शुभानना। अनुरूपं यदत्राद्य तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१३-२-६५॥
anena vidhinā seyaṁ mām arcati śubhānanā। anurūpaṁ yad atra adya tad bhavān vaktum arhati ॥13-2-65॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; विधिना (vidhinā) - by method; सा (sā) - she; इयम् (iyam) - this; माम् (mām) - me; अर्चति (arcati) - worships; शुभानना (śubhānanā) - auspicious-faced; अनुरूपं (anurūpaṁ) - appropriate; यत् (yat) - which; अत्र (atra) - here; आद्य (adya) - today; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हति (arhati) - are worthy;]
(By this method, this auspicious-faced one worships me. That which is appropriate here today, you are worthy to speak.)
By this method, this auspicious-faced lady worships me. Whatever is appropriate here today, you are worthy to speak that. (13-2-65)
कूटमुद्गरहस्तस्तु मृत्युस्तं वै समन्वयात्। हीनप्रतिज्ञमत्रैनं वधिष्यामीति चिन्तयन् ॥१३-२-६६॥
kūṭamudgarahastastu mṛtyustaṃ vai samanvayāt। hīnapratijñamatrainaṃ vadhiṣyāmīti cintayan ॥13-2-66॥
[कूट (kūṭa) - hammer; मुद्गर (mudgara) - mace; हस्तः (hastaḥ) - hand; तु (tu) - but; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - Death; तम् (tam) - him; वै (vai) - indeed; समन्वयात् (samanvayāt) - with agreement; हीन (hīna) - deficient; प्रतिज्ञम् (pratijñam) - promise; अत्र (atra) - here; एनम् (enam) - him; वधिष्यामि (vadhiṣyāmi) - I will kill; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्तयन् (cintayan) - thinking;]
(Hammer-mace-hand-but Death him indeed with agreement; deficient-promise-here-him I will kill-thus thinking;)
But Death, holding a hammer-mace in his hand, indeed, with agreement, thinking here, 'He is deficient in promise, I will kill him thus.' (13-2-66)
सुदर्शनस्तु मनसा कर्मणा चक्षुषा गिरा। त्यक्तेर्ष्यस्त्यक्तमन्युश्च स्मयमानोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१३-२-६७॥
sudarśanastu manasā karmaṇā cakṣuṣā girā। tyakterṣyastyaktamanyuśca smayamāno'bravīdidam ॥13-2-67॥
[सुदर्शनः (sudarśanaḥ) - good-looking one; तु (tu) - but; मनसा (manasā) - with mind; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - with action; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with eye; गिरा (girā) - with speech; त्यक्त-ईर्ष्यः (tyakta-īrṣyaḥ) - one who has abandoned envy; त्यक्त-मन्युः (tyakta-manyuḥ) - one who has abandoned anger; च (ca) - and; स्मयमानः (smayamānaḥ) - smiling; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; इदम् (idam) - this;]
(But Sudarshana, with mind, with action, with eye, with speech, having abandoned envy, having abandoned anger and smiling, said this.)
But Sudarshana, who had let go of envy and anger, and was smiling, spoke these words with his mind, actions, eyes, and speech. (13-2-67)
सुरतं तेऽस्तु विप्राग्र्य प्रीतिर्हि परमा मम। गृहस्थस्य हि धर्मोऽग्र्यः सम्प्राप्तातिथिपूजनम् ॥१३-२-६८॥
surataṃ te'stu viprāgrya prītirhi paramā mama। gṛhasthasya hi dharmo'gryaḥ samprāptātithipūjanam ॥13-2-68॥
[सुरतम् (suratam) - good union; ते (te) - to you; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; विप्राग्र्य (viprāgrya) - best among Brāhmaṇas; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; हि (hi) - indeed; परमा (paramā) - supreme; मम (mama) - my; गृहस्थस्य (gṛhasthasya) - of the householder; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; अग्र्यः (agryaḥ) - foremost; सम्प्राप्त (samprāpta) - arrived; अतिथि (atithi) - guest; पूजनम् (pūjanam) - worship;]
(Good union to you let it be, O best among Brāhmaṇas; delight indeed supreme my. Of the householder indeed duty foremost is the worship of an arrived guest.)
May you have good union, O foremost of Brāhmaṇas; for my supreme delight is indeed this: for a householder, the foremost duty is the worship of an arriving guest. (13-2-68)
अतिथिः पूजितो यस्य गृहस्थस्य तु गच्छति। नान्यस्तस्मात्परो धर्म इति प्राहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१३-२-६९॥
atithiḥ pūjito yasya gṛhasthasya tu gacchati। nānyastasmātparo dharma iti prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ ॥13-2-69॥
[अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; गृहस्थस्य (gṛhasthasya) - of the householder; तु (tu) - but; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; परः (paraḥ) - higher; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; इति (iti) - thus; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - have said; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(Guest honored of whom of the householder but goes; not other than that higher duty thus have said the wise;)
The wise have said: 'There is no duty higher than this, that a guest honored departs from the householder's home.' (13-2-69)
प्राणा हि मम दाराश्च यच्चान्यद्विद्यते वसु। अतिथिभ्यो मया देयमिति मे व्रतमाहितम् ॥१३-२-७०॥
prāṇā hi mama dārāś ca yac cānyad vidyate vasu। atithibhyo mayā deyam iti me vratam āhitam ॥13-2-70॥
[प्राणा (prāṇāḥ) - life-breaths; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; दाराः (dārāḥ) - wives; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; वसु (vasu) - wealth; अतिथिभ्यः (atithibhyaḥ) - to guests; मया (mayā) - by me; देयम् (deyam) - should be given; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow; आहितम् (āhitam) - established;]
(Life-breaths indeed my wives and whatever other exists wealth to guests by me should be given thus my vow established.)
Indeed, my life-breaths, my wives, and whatever other wealth exists, all should be given by me to guests—such is the vow I have established. (13-2-70)
निःसंदिग्धं मया वाक्यमेतत्ते समुदाहृतम्। तेनाहं विप्र सत्येन स्वयमात्मानमालभे ॥१३-२-७१॥
niḥsaṁdigdhaṁ mayā vākyam etat te samudāhṛtam। tena ahaṁ vipra satyena svayam ātmānam ālabhe ॥13-2-71॥
[निःसंदिग्धं (niḥsaṁdigdham) - free from doubt; मया (mayā) - by me; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; समुदाहृतम् (samudāhṛtam) - uttered; तेन (tena) - by that; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; आलभे (ālabhe) - I take hold;]
(Free from doubt by me statement this to you uttered. By that I O brāhmaṇa by truth myself self I take hold.)
O brāhmaṇa, this statement, free from doubt, has been uttered to you by me. By that truth, I myself take hold of my own self. (13-2-71)
पृथिवी वायुराकाशमापो ज्योतिश्च पञ्चमम्। बुद्धिरात्मा मनः कालो दिशश्चैव गुणा दश ॥१३-२-७२॥
pṛthivī vāyur ākāśam āpo jyotiś ca pañcamam। buddhir ātmā manaḥ kālo diśaś caiva guṇā daśa ॥13-2-72॥
[पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - space; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; ज्योतिः (jyotiḥ) - light; च (ca) - and; पञ्चमम् (pañcamam) - the fifth; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities; दश (daśa) - ten;]
(earth; air; space; waters; light and the fifth; intellect; self; mind; time; directions and indeed; qualities; ten;)
Earth, air, space, water, and light as the fifth; intellect, self, mind, time, and directions—these indeed are the ten qualities. (13-2-72)
नित्यमेते हि पश्यन्ति देहिनां देहसंश्रिताः। सुकृतं दुष्कृतं चापि कर्म धर्मभृतां वर ॥१३-२-७३॥
nityam ete hi paśyanti dehināṃ dehasaṃśritāḥ। sukṛtaṃ duṣkṛtaṃ cāpi karma dharmabhṛtāṃ vara ॥13-2-73॥
[नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; देहिनाम् (dehinām) - of embodied beings; देहसंश्रिताः (dehasaṃśritāḥ) - those who are associated with the body; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - good deed; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - bad deed; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कर्म (karma) - action; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - O best;]
(Always these indeed see of embodied beings those who are associated with the body; good deed, bad deed and also action, O best of the upholders of dharma.)
O best of the upholders of dharma, these beings who are associated with the body always see the good and bad deeds, as well as the actions, of embodied beings. (13-2-73)
यथैषा नानृता वाणी मयाद्य समुदाहृता। तेन सत्येन मां देवाः पालयन्तु दहन्तु वा ॥१३-२-७४॥
yathaiṣā nānṛtā vāṇī mayādya samudāhṛtā। tena satyena māṃ devāḥ pālayantu dahantu vā ॥13-2-74॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); न (na) - not; अनृता (anṛtā) - false; untrue; वाणी (vāṇī) - speech; utterance; मया (mayā) - by me; अद्य (adya) - today; now; समुदाहृता (samudāhṛtā) - uttered; spoken out; declared; तेन (tena) - by that; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; by truthfulness; माम् (mām) - me; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; पालयन्तु (pālayantu) - may protect; may preserve; दहन्तु (dahantu) - may burn; वा (vā) - or;]
(Just as this speech, not false, has been uttered by me today, by that truth may the gods protect me or may they burn (me).)
As this speech, which is not false, has been spoken by me today, by that truth may the gods either protect me or burn me. (13-2-74)
ततो नादः समभवद्दिक्षु सर्वासु भारत। असकृत्सत्यमित्येव नैतन्मिथ्येति सर्वशः ॥१३-२-७५॥
tato nādaḥ samabhavad dikṣu sarvāsu bhārata। asakṛt satyam ity eva na etan mithyeti sarvaśaḥ ॥13-2-75॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; नादः (nādaḥ) - sound; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in the directions; सर्वासु (sarvāsu) - in all; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; मिथ्या (mithyā) - false; इति (iti) - thus; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - on all sides;]
(From then, a sound arose in all directions, O Bhārata; repeatedly, "Truth, indeed! Not this false!" thus, on all sides.)
Then, O Bhārata, a sound arose in all directions; again and again, on all sides, it proclaimed: "Truth, indeed! This is not false!" (13-2-75)
उटजात्तु ततस्तस्मान्निश्चक्राम स वै द्विजः। वपुषा खं च भूमिं च व्याप्य वायुरिवोद्यतः ॥१३-२-७६॥
uṭajāttu tatastasmānniścakrāma sa vai dvijaḥ। vapuṣā khaṃ ca bhūmiṃ ca vyāpya vāyurivodyataḥ ॥13-2-76॥
[उटजात् (uṭajāt) - from the hut; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from there; निश्चक्राम (niścakrāma) - he went out; स (sa) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - with his form; खम् (kham) - the sky; च (ca) - and; भूमिम् (bhūmim) - the earth; च (ca) - and; व्याप्य (vyāpya) - having pervaded; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - the wind; इव (iva) - like; उद्यतः (udyataḥ) - risen;]
(But then from the hut, from there, he went out; he indeed, the twice-born, with his form having pervaded the sky and the earth, like the wind, risen.)
But then, from the hut, that twice-born indeed went out; with his form pervading both the sky and the earth, he rose like the wind. (13-2-76)
स्वरेण विप्रः शैक्षेण त्रीँल्लोकाननुनादयन्। उवाच चैनं धर्मज्ञं पूर्वमामन्त्र्य नामतः ॥१३-२-७७॥
svareṇa vipraḥ śaikṣeṇa trī̃llokān anunādayan। uvāca ca enaṃ dharmajñaṃ pūrvam āmantrya nāmataḥ ॥13-2-77॥
[स्वरेण (svareṇa) - with voice; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; शैक्षेण (śaikṣeṇa) - with learned (voice); त्रीँल्लोकान् (trī̃llokān) - the three worlds; अनुनादयन् (anunādayan) - resounding; उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; धर्मज्ञम् (dharmajñam) - knower of dharma; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - first; आमन्त्र्य (āmantrya) - having addressed; नामतः (nāmataḥ) - by name;]
(With voice, the brāhmaṇa, with learned (voice), resounding the three worlds, said, and him, knower of dharma, first, having addressed, by name.)
With his learned voice, the brāhmaṇa, resounding through the three worlds, first addressed the knower of dharma by name and spoke to him. (13-2-77)
धर्मोऽहमस्मि भद्रं ते जिज्ञासार्थं तवानघ। प्राप्तः सत्यं च ते ज्ञात्वा प्रीतिर्मे परमा त्वयि ॥१३-२-७८॥
dharmo'hamasmi bhadraṃ te jijñāsārthaṃ tavānagha। prāptaḥ satyaṃ ca te jñātvā prītir me paramā tvayi ॥13-2-78॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; law; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; भद्रम् (bhadram) - auspiciousness; welfare; ते (te) - to you; जिज्ञासा-अर्थम् (jijñāsā-artham) - for the sake of inquiry; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; reached; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - by you; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - delight; affection; मे (me) - my; परमा (paramā) - supreme; highest; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you;]
(Righteousness I am; auspiciousness to you; for the sake of inquiry your, O sinless one; attained; truth and by you having known; delight my supreme in you;)
I am righteousness; auspiciousness to you. For the sake of your inquiry, O sinless one, I have come. Having known the truth by you, my supreme delight is in you. (13-2-78)
विजितश्च त्वया मृत्युर्योऽयं त्वामनुगच्छति। रन्ध्रान्वेषी तव सदा त्वया धृत्या वशीकृतः ॥१३-२-७९॥
vijitaś ca tvayā mṛtyur yo 'yaṃ tvām anugacchati। randhrānveṣī tava sadā tvayā dhṛtyā vaśīkṛtaḥ ॥13-2-79॥
[विजितः (vijitaḥ) - conquered; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows; रन्ध्र (randhra) - weakness; अन्वेषी (anveṣī) - seeker; तव (tava) - your; सदा (sadā) - always; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धृत्या (dhṛtyā) - by fortitude; वशीकृतः (vaśīkṛtaḥ) - subdued;]
(And conquered by you, death, who is this one that follows you, the seeker of your weaknesses, always by you, by fortitude, is subdued.)
Death, who always follows you seeking your weaknesses, has been conquered and subdued by your fortitude. (13-2-79)
न चास्ति शक्तिस्त्रैलोक्ये कस्यचित्पुरुषोत्तम। पतिव्रतामिमां साध्वीं तवोद्वीक्षितुमप्युत ॥१३-२-८०॥
na cāsti śaktis trailokye kasyacit puruṣottama। pativratām imāṃ sādhvīṃ tava udvīkṣitum api uta ॥13-2-80॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्ति (asti) - is; शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) - power; त्रैलोक्ये (trailokye) - in the three worlds; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men; पतिव्रताम् (pativratām) - devoted to husband; इमाम् (imām) - this; साध्वीम् (sādhvīm) - virtuous woman; तव (tava) - your; उद्वीक्षितुम् (udvīkṣitum) - to even look at; अपि (api) - even; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Not and is power in the three worlds of anyone, O best of men, to even look at this devoted, virtuous woman of yours, even indeed.)
O best of men, there is not anyone in the three worlds who has the power to even look upon this virtuous and devoted wife of yours. (13-2-80)
रक्षिता त्वद्गुणैरेषा पतिव्रतगुणैस्तथा। अधृष्या यदियं ब्रूयात्तथा तन्नान्यथा भवेत् ॥१३-२-८१॥
rakṣitā tvad-guṇair eṣā pativrataguṇais tathā। adhṛṣyā yad iyaṃ brūyāt tathā tan nānyathā bhavet ॥13-2-81॥
[रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protected; त्वत् (tvat) - by you; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by virtues; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); पतिव्रतगुणैः (pativrataguṇaiḥ) - by the qualities of a devoted wife; तथा (tathā) - also; अधृष्या (adhṛṣyā) - unassailable; यत् (yat) - that; इयम् (iyam) - this (woman); ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - might say; तथा (tathā) - thus; तत् (tat) - that; न (na) - not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be;]
(Protected by your virtues, this (woman) also by the qualities of a devoted wife, unassailable; that which this (woman) might say, thus that would not be otherwise.)
This woman, protected by your virtues and by the qualities of a devoted wife, is unassailable; whatever she might say, so it will be and not otherwise. (13-2-81)
एषा हि तपसा स्वेन संयुक्ता ब्रह्मवादिनी। पावनार्थं च लोकस्य सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा भविष्यति ॥१३-२-८२॥
eṣā hi tapasā svena saṁyuktā brahmavādinī। pāvanārthaṁ ca lokasya saricchreṣṭhā bhaviṣyati ॥13-2-82॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); हि (hi) - indeed; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; स्वेन (svena) - by her own; संयुक्ता (saṁyuktā) - joined; ब्रह्मवादिनी (brahmavādinī) - one who speaks of Brahman; पावनार्थं (pāvanārthaṁ) - for the purpose of purification; च (ca) - and; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा (saricchreṣṭhā) - the best of rivers; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become;]
(This indeed, by austerity, by her own, joined, one who speaks of Brahman, for the purpose of purification, and, of the world, the best of rivers, will become.)
This river, indeed, united with her own austerity and as a speaker of Brahman, will become the best of rivers for the purification of the world. (13-2-82)
अर्धेनौघवती नाम त्वामर्धेनानुयास्यति। शरीरेण महाभागा योगो ह्यस्या वशे स्थितः ॥१३-२-८३॥
ardhenaughavatī nāma tvām ardhenānuyāsyati। śarīreṇa mahābhāgā yogo hy asyā vaśe sthitaḥ ॥13-2-83॥
[अर्धेन (ardhena) - with half; औघवती (aughavatī) - Aughavati (name); नाम (nāma) - named; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अर्धेन (ardhena) - with half; अनुयास्यति (anuyāsyati) - will follow; शरीरेण (śarīreṇa) - with the body; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - greatly fortunate (feminine); योगः (yogaḥ) - union; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्या (asyā) - of her; वशे (vaśe) - under the control; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remains;]

अनया सह लोकांश्च गन्तासि तपसार्जितान्। यत्र नावृत्तिमभ्येति शाश्वतांस्तान्सनातनान् ॥१३-२-८४॥
anayā saha lokāṁś ca gantāsi tapasārjitān। yatra nāvṛttim abhyeti śāśvatāṁs tān sanātanān ॥13-2-84॥
[अनया (anayā) - by this (woman); सह (saha) - together with; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; च (ca) - and; गन्तासि (gantāsi) - you will go; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अर्जितान् (arjitān) - acquired; यत्र (yatra) - where; न (na) - not; आवृत्तिम् (āvṛttim) - return; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - attains; शाश्वतान् (śāśvatān) - eternal; तान् (tān) - those; सनातनान् (sanātanān) - ancient;]
(By this (woman), together with, worlds, and, you will go, by austerity, acquired, where, not, return, attains, eternal, those, ancient.)
You will go together with this woman to those worlds acquired by austerity, which are eternal and ancient, where one does not return. (13-2-84)
अनेन चैव देहेन लोकांस्त्वमभिपत्स्यसे। निर्जितश्च त्वया मृत्युरैश्वर्यं च तवोत्तमम् ॥१३-२-८५॥
anena caiva dehena lokāṁstvam abhipatsyase। nirjitaśca tvayā mṛtyur aiśvaryaṁ ca tavottamam ॥13-2-85॥

(By this indeed body, you will attain the worlds. And by you, death is conquered and the highest sovereignty is yours.)

पञ्च भूतान्यतिक्रान्तः स्ववीर्याच्च मनोभवः। गृहस्थधर्मेणानेन कामक्रोधौ च ते जितौ ॥१३-२-८६॥
pañca bhūtānyatikrāntaḥ svavīryācca manobhavaḥ। gṛhasthadharmeṇānena kāmakrodhau ca te jitau॥13-2-86॥

(Having surpassed the five elements and desire by own strength, by this householder's duty, desire and anger of yours are conquered.)
By surpassing the five elements and desire through your own strength, and by following this householder's duty, your desire and anger have been conquered. (13-2-86)
स्नेहो रागश्च तन्द्री च मोहो द्रोहश्च केवलः। तव शुश्रूषया राजन्राजपुत्र्या विनिर्जिताः ॥१३-२-८७॥
sneho rāgaś ca tandrī ca moho drohaś ca kevalaḥ। tava śuśrūṣayā rājan rājaputryā vinirjitāḥ ॥13-2-87॥

śuklānāṃ tu sahasreṇa vājināṃ ratham uttamam। yuktaṃ pragṛhya bhagavān vyavasāyaḥ jagāma tam ॥13-2-88॥

तस्माद्गृहाश्रमस्थस्य नान्यद्दैवतमस्ति वै। ऋतेऽतिथिं नरव्याघ्र मनसैतद्विचारय ॥१३-२-९०॥
tasmād-gṛhāśramasthasya nānyad-daivatam asti vai। ṛte'tithiṃ naravyāghra manasaitad-vicāraya ॥13-2-90॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; गृहाश्रमस्थस्य (gṛhāśramasthasya) - of the householder; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; दैवतम् (daivatam) - divinity; अस्ति (asti) - is; वै (vai) - indeed; ऋते (ṛte) - except; अतिथिम् (atithim) - guest; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - O tiger among men; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; एतत् (etat) - this; विचारय (vicāraya) - consider;]
(Therefore, for the householder, there is indeed no other divinity except the guest. O tiger among men, consider this with the mind.)

अतिथिः पूजितो यस्य ध्यायते मनसा शुभम्। न तत्क्रतुशतेनापि तुल्यमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥१३-२-९१॥
atithiḥ pūjito yasya dhyāyate manasā śubham। na tatkratuśatenāpi tulyam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ ॥13-2-91॥
[अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; ध्यायते (dhyāyate) - is meditated upon; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; क्रतुशतेन (kratuśatena) - by a hundred sacrifices; अपि (api) - even; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; मनीषिणः (manīṣiṇaḥ) - the wise;]
(The guest who is honored, of whom auspiciousness is meditated upon with the mind, not even by a hundred sacrifices do the wise say that is equal to that.)
The wise say that honoring a guest and contemplating auspiciousness for him in one's mind is not equaled even by a hundred sacrifices. (13-2-91)
पात्रं त्वतिथिमासाद्य शीलाढ्यं यो न पूजयेत्। स दत्त्वा सुकृतं तस्य क्षपयेत ह्यनर्चितः ॥१३-२-९२॥
pātraṃ tv-atithim-āsādya śīlāḍhyaṃ yo na pūjayet। sa dattvā sukṛtaṃ tasya kṣapayet hy-anarcitaḥ ॥13-2-92॥
[पात्रम् (pātram) - worthy person; त्व् (tv) - indeed; अतिथिम् (atithim) - guest; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; शीलाढ्यम् (śīlāḍhyam) - rich in character; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; पूजयेत् (pūjayet) - should honor; सः (saḥ) - he; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - meritorious deed; तस्य (tasya) - his; क्षपयेत् (kṣapayet) - destroys; हि (hi) - indeed; अनर्चितः (anarcitaḥ) - unhonored;]
(A worthy person, indeed, having approached a guest rich in character, who does not honor (him), he, having given a meritorious deed, destroys his (own merit) indeed, being unhonored.)
If a worthy person, who is a guest rich in character, is not honored by someone, then that person, even after performing a meritorious deed, destroys his own merit by failing to honor (the guest). (13-2-92)
एतत्ते कथितं पुत्र मयाख्यानमनुत्तमम्। यथा हि विजितो मृत्युर्गृहस्थेन पुराभवत् ॥१३-२-९३॥
etat te kathitaṃ putra mayākhyānam anuttamam। yathā hi vijito mṛtyur gṛhasthena purābhavat ॥13-2-93॥

धन्यं यशस्यमायुष्यमिदमाख्यानमुत्तमम्। बुभूषताभिमन्तव्यं सर्वदुश्चरितापहम् ॥१३-२-९४॥
dhanyaṃ yaśasyam āyuṣyam idam ākhyānam uttamam। bubhūṣatā abhimantavyaṃ sarva-duścaritāpaham ॥13-2-94॥

ya idaṃ kathayed vidvān ahany ahani bhārata। sudarśanasya caritaṃ puṇyāṃl lokān avāpnuyāt ॥13-2-95॥
