ब्राह्मण्यं यदि दुष्प्रापं त्रिभिर्वर्णैर्नराधिप। कथं प्राप्तं महाराज क्षत्रियेण महात्मना ॥१३-३-१॥
brāhmaṇyaṃ yadi duṣprāpaṃ tribhirvarṇairnarādhipa। kathaṃ prāptaṃ mahārāja kṣatriyeṇa mahātmanā ॥13-3-1॥

O king, if the state of being a Brāhmaṇa is difficult to attain by the three castes, how was it attained by the great-souled Kṣatriya, O great king? (13-3-1)
विश्वामित्रेण धर्मात्मन्ब्राह्मणत्वं नरर्षभ। श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वेन तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-३-२॥
viśvāmitreṇa dharmātman brāhmaṇatvaṃ nararṣabha। śrotum icchāmi tattvena tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-3-2॥

O grandsire, O righteous-souled one, O bull among men, I wish to hear truly about the brāhmaṇa-hood of Viśvāmitra; please tell me that. (13-3-2)
तेन ह्यमितवीर्येण वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः। हतं पुत्रशतं सद्यस्तपसा प्रपितामह ॥१३-३-३॥
tena hy amitavīryeṇa vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ। hataṃ putraśataṃ sadyas tapasā prapitāmaha ॥13-3-3॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; हि (hi) - indeed; अमितवीर्येण (amitavīryeṇa) - by the immeasurably powerful; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; हतं (hataṃ) - killed; पुत्रशतं (putraśataṃ) - hundred sons; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; प्रपितामह (prapitāmaha) - great-grandfather;]
(By him indeed, by the immeasurably powerful, of Vasiṣṭha, of the great-souled, the hundred sons were killed immediately by austerity, great-grandfather.)
O great-grandfather, indeed, by that immeasurably powerful one, the hundred sons of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha were immediately killed by austerity. (13-3-3)
यातुधानाश्च बहवो राक्षसास्तिग्मतेजसः। मन्युनाविष्टदेहेन सृष्टाः कालान्तकोपमाः ॥१३-३-४॥
yātudhānāś ca bahavo rākṣasās tigmatejasaḥ। manyunāviṣṭadehena sṛṣṭāḥ kālāntakopamāḥ ॥13-3-4॥
[यातुधानाः (yātudhānāḥ) - demons; (lit. eaters of flesh); च (ca) - and; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; (a class of demons); तिग्मतेजसः (tigmatejasaḥ) - of sharp energy; of fierce brilliance; मन्युनाविष्टदेहेन (manyunāviṣṭadehena) - with body possessed by anger; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; कालान्तकोपमाः (kālāntakopamāḥ) - like the end-time death; resembling the destroyer at the end of time;]
(Demons and many rākṣasas of sharp energy, with body possessed by anger, created, like the end-time death.)
Many demons and rākṣasas of fierce brilliance, created with bodies possessed by anger, were like the destroyer at the end of time. (13-3-4)
महान्कुशिकवंशश्च ब्रह्मर्षिशतसङ्कुलः। स्थापितो नरलोकेऽस्मिन्विद्वान्ब्राह्मणसंस्तुतः ॥१३-३-५॥
mahān kuśika-vaṃśaś ca brahmarṣi-śata-saṅkulaḥ। sthāpito nara-loke 'smin vidvān brāhmaṇa-saṃstutaḥ ॥13-3-5॥
[महान् (mahān) - great; कुशिकवंशः (kuśika-vaṃśaḥ) - Kuśika lineage; च (ca) - and; ब्रह्मर्षिशत (brahmarṣi-śata) - hundreds of Brahmarṣis; सङ्कुलः (saṅkulaḥ) - filled with; स्थापितः (sthāpitaḥ) - established; नरलोके (nara-loke) - in the world of men; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; विद्वान् (vidvān) - wise; ब्राह्मणसंस्तुतः (brāhmaṇa-saṃstutaḥ) - praised by Brāhmaṇas;]
(Great, Kuśika lineage and, hundreds of Brahmarṣis filled with, established in the world of men in this, wise, praised by Brāhmaṇas.)
The great Kuśika lineage, filled with hundreds of Brahmarṣis, was established in this world of men by a wise one, praised by Brāhmaṇas. (13-3-5)
ऋचीकस्यात्मजश्चैव शुनःशेपो महातपाः। विमोक्षितो महासत्रात्पशुतामभ्युपागतः ॥१३-३-६॥
ṛcīkasya ātmajaś caiva śunaḥśepo mahātapāḥ। vimokṣito mahāsatrāt paśutām abhyupāgataḥ ॥13-3-6॥

Śunaḥśepa, the son of Ṛcīka and a great ascetic, who had been released from the state of being a sacrificial victim at the great sacrifice. (13-3-6)
हरिश्चन्द्रक्रतौ देवांस्तोषयित्वात्मतेजसा। पुत्रतामनुसम्प्राप्तो विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ॥१३-३-७॥
hariścandra-kratau devāṁs toṣayitvā ātma-tejasā। putratām anusamprāpto viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ ॥13-3-7॥
[हरिश्चन्द्रक्रतौ (hariścandra-kratau) - in the sacrifice of Hariścandra; देवान् (devān) - the gods; तोषयित्वा (toṣayitvā) - having pleased; आत्मतेजसा (ātma-tejasā) - by his own splendor; पुत्रताम् (putratām) - the state of being a son; अनुसम्प्राप्तः (anusamprāptaḥ) - has attained; विश्वामित्रस्य (viśvāmitrasya) - of Viśvāmitra; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - the wise;]
(In the sacrifice of Hariścandra, having pleased the gods by his own splendor, he has attained the state of being a son of the wise Viśvāmitra.)

नाभिवादयते ज्येष्ठं देवरातं नराधिप। पुत्राः पञ्चशताश्चापि शप्ताः श्वपचतां गताः ॥१३-३-८॥
nābhivādayate jyeṣṭhaṃ devarātaṃ narādhipa। putrāḥ pañcaśatāścāpi śaptāḥ śvapacatāṃ gatāḥ ॥13-3-8॥

(Not greets elder Devarāta O king; sons five hundred and also cursed state of dog-eaters have gone.)
O king, because he does not greet his elder Devarāta, his five hundred sons have also been cursed and have become dog-eaters. (13-3-8)
त्रिशङ्कुर्बन्धुसन्त्यक्त इक्ष्वाकुः प्रीतिपूर्वकम्। अवाक्षिरा दिवं नीतो दक्षिणामाश्रितो दिशम् ॥१३-३-९॥
triśaṅkur bandhu-santyakta ikṣvākuḥ prīti-pūrvakam। avāk-śirā divaṃ nīto dakṣiṇām āśrito diśam ॥13-3-9॥
[त्रिशङ्कुः (triśaṅkuḥ) - Triśaṅku; (proper name); बन्धु-सन्त्यक्त (bandhu-santyakta) - abandoned by relatives; (bandhu: relative; santyakta: abandoned;) इक्ष्वाकुः (ikṣvākuḥ) - Ikṣvāku; (descendant of Ikṣvāku;) प्रीति-पूर्वकम् (prīti-pūrvakam) - with affection; (prīti: affection; pūrvakam: accompanied by;) अवाक्-शिरा (avāk-śirā) - with head downwards; (avāk: downwards; śirā: head;) दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; (div: heaven;) नीतः (nītaḥ) - led; (nīta: led;) दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; (dakṣiṇā: southern;) आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - having resorted to; (āśrita: resorted to;) दिशम् (diśam) - direction; (diś: direction;);]

Triśaṅku, a descendant of Ikṣvāku, abandoned by his relatives, was affectionately led with his head downwards to heaven, having resorted to the southern direction. (13-3-9)
विश्वामित्रस्य विपुला नदी राजर्षिसेविता। कौशिकीति शिवा पुण्या ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेविता ॥१३-३-१०॥
viśvāmitrasya vipulā nadī rājarṣisevitā। kauśikīti śivā puṇyā brahmarṣigaṇasevitā ॥13-3-10॥
[विश्वामित्रस्य (viśvāmitrasya) - of Viśvāmitra; विपुला (vipulā) - broad; नदी (nadī) - river; राजर्षिसेविता (rājarṣisevitā) - served by royal sages; कौशिकी (kauśikī) - Kauśikī; इति (iti) - thus; शिवा (śivā) - auspicious; पुण्या (puṇyā) - holy; ब्रह्मर्षिगणसेविता (brahmarṣigaṇasevitā) - served by groups of Brahmarṣis;]

तपोविघ्नकरी चैव पञ्चचूडा सुसंमता। रम्भा नामाप्सराः शापाद्यस्य शैलत्वमागता ॥१३-३-११॥
tapovighnakarī caiva pañcachūḍā susaṁmatā। rambhā nāmāpsarāḥ śāpādyasya śailatvamāgatā ॥13-3-11॥
[तपः-विघ्नकरी (tapaḥ-vighnakarī) - austerity-obstacle-maker; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पञ्चचूडा (pañcachūḍā) - Pañcachūḍā; सुसंमता (susaṁmatā) - well-esteemed; रम्भा (rambhā) - Rambhā; नाम (nāma) - by name; अप्सराः (apsarāḥ) - celestial nymph; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; शैलत्वम् (śailatvam) - mountain-hood; आगता (āgatā) - has come;]
(Austerity-obstacle-maker and indeed Pañcachūḍā, well-esteemed, Rambhā by name, the celestial nymph, from a curse, in whom mountain-hood has come.)
Rambhā, the well-esteemed celestial nymph known as Pañcachūḍā, who was an obstacle to austerities, due to a curse, has become a mountain. (13-3-11)
तथैवास्य भयाद्बद्ध्वा वसिष्ठः सलिले पुरा। आत्मानं मज्जयामास विपाशः पुनरुत्थितः ॥१३-३-१२॥
tathaivāsya bhayādbaddhvā vasiṣṭhaḥ salile purā। ātmānaṃ majjayāmāsa vipāśaḥ punarutthitaḥ ॥13-3-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; वसिष्ठः (vasiṣṭhaḥ) - Vasiṣṭha; सलिले (salile) - in water; पुरा (purā) - formerly; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; मज्जयामास (majjayāmāsa) - caused to sink; विपाशः (vipāśaḥ) - Vipāśā (the river); पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - arisen;]
(Thus indeed, from fear of him, having bound (himself), Vasiṣṭha formerly in water, himself caused to sink; Vipāśā again arisen.)
Thus, out of fear of him, Vasiṣṭha once bound himself and immersed himself in the water; the river Vipāśā brought him up again. (13-3-12)
तदाप्रभृति पुण्या हि विपाशाभून्महानदी। विख्याता कर्मणा तेन वसिष्ठस्य महात्मनः ॥१३-३-१३॥
tadāprabhṛti puṇyā hi vipāśābhūnmahānadī। vikhyātā karmaṇā tena vasiṣṭhasya mahātmanaḥ ॥13-3-13॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from; beginning; पुण्या (puṇyā) - holy; auspicious; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; विपाशा (vipāśā) - Vipāśā; (name of the river); अभूत् (abhūt) - became; was; महा (mahā) - great; नदी (nadī) - river; विख्याता (vikhyātā) - renowned; famous; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by the deed; by the act; तेन (tena) - by that; by him; वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) - of Vasiṣṭha; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; of the high-souled;]
(From then, indeed, the Vipāśā became a holy great river; renowned by the deed of that great-souled Vasiṣṭha.)
From that time, the Vipāśā became a holy and great river, renowned because of the deed of the great-souled Vasiṣṭha. (13-3-13)
वाग्भिश्च भगवान्येन देवसेनाग्रगः प्रभुः। स्तुतः प्रीतमनाश्चासीच्छापाच्चैनममोचयत् ॥१३-३-१४॥
vāgbhiś ca bhagavān yena deva-senāgragaḥ prabhuḥ। stutaḥ prīta-manāś ca āsīt śāpāc ca enam amocayat ॥13-3-14॥
[वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - by words; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; येन (yena) - by whom; देवसेनाग्रगः (deva-senāgragaḥ) - the leader of the divine army; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; स्तुतः (stutaḥ) - praised; प्रीतमनाः (prīta-manāḥ) - with pleased mind; च (ca) - and; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अमोचयत् (amocayat) - released;]
(By words and the Lord by whom the leader of the divine army, the master, praised, with pleased mind and was, from the curse and him released.)
The Lord, having been praised by words by the leader of the divine army, was pleased in mind and released him from the curse. (13-3-14)
ध्रुवस्यौत्तानपादस्य ब्रह्मर्षीणां तथैव च। मध्ये ज्वलति यो नित्यमुदीचीमाश्रितो दिशम् ॥१३-३-१५॥
dhruvasyauttānapādasya brahmarṣīṇāṃ tathaiva ca। madhye jvalati yo nityamudīcīmāśrito diśam ॥13-3-15॥
[ध्रुवस्य (dhruvasya) - of Dhruva; औत्तानपादस्य (auttānapādasya) - son of Uttānapāda; ब्रह्मर्षीणां (brahmarṣīṇām) - of the Brahmarṣis; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; ज्वलति (jvalati) - shines; यः (yaḥ) - who; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) - northern; आश्रितः (āśritaḥ) - resorted to; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(Of Dhruva, son of Uttānapāda, of the Brahmarṣis, in the same way and; in the midst shines who always the northern resorted to direction.)
Just as Dhruva, the son of Uttānapāda, and the Brahmarṣis, so too, in the midst, he who always shines, having resorted to the northern direction. (13-3-15)
तस्यैतानि च कर्माणि तथान्यानि च कौरव। क्षत्रियस्येत्यतो जातमिदं कौतूहलं मम ॥१३-३-१६॥
tasyaitāni ca karmāṇi tathānyāni ca kaurava। kṣatriyasyetyato jātamidaṃ kautūhalaṃ mama ॥13-3-16॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; एतानि (etāni) - these; च (ca) - and; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; तथा (tathā) - also; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; च (ca) - and; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; क्षत्रियस्य (kṣatriyasya) - of a kṣatriya; इति (iti) - thus; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; जातम् (jātam) - arisen; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कौतूहलम् (kautūhalam) - curiosity; मम (mama) - my;]
(Of him these and actions also other and O Kaurava, of a kṣatriya thus therefore arisen this curiosity my.)
O Kaurava, these actions of his and other such actions of a kṣatriya—thus, therefore, this curiosity has arisen in me. (13-3-16)
किमेतदिति तत्त्वेन प्रब्रूहि भरतर्षभ। देहान्तरमनासाद्य कथं स ब्राह्मणोऽभवत् ॥१३-३-१७॥
kim etad iti tattvena prabrūhi bharatarṣabha। dehāntaram anāsādya kathaṃ sa brāhmaṇo 'bhavat ॥13-3-17॥
[किम् (kim) - what; एतत् (etat) - this; इति (iti) - thus; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in reality; प्रब्रूहि (prabrūhi) - explain; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; देह-अन्तरम् (deha-antaram) - another body; अनासाद्य (anāsādya) - without attaining; कथम् (katham) - how; सः (saḥ) - he; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(What is this, thus, in reality, explain, O best of the Bharatas. Another body without attaining, how he Brāhmaṇa became.)
O best of the Bharatas, explain in reality what this is. How did he become a Brāhmaṇa without attaining another body? (13-3-17)
एतत्तत्त्वेन मे राजन्सर्वमाख्यातुमर्हसि। मतङ्गस्य यथातत्त्वं तथैवैतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१३-३-१८॥
etattattvena me rājan sarvam ākhyātum arhasi। mataṅgasya yathātattvaṃ tathaiva etad bravīhi me ॥13-3-18॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - with reality; with truth; मे (me) - to me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to tell; to relate; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; you should; मतङ्गस्य (mataṅgasya) - of Mataṅga; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth; reality; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; एव (eva) - indeed; exactly; एतत् (etat) - this; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - speak; tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(This with truth to me O king all to tell you ought; of Mataṅga as truth so indeed this speak to me.)
O king, you ought to tell me all this truthfully; just as is the reality regarding Mataṅga, so indeed tell me this. (13-3-18)
स्थाने मतङ्गो ब्राह्मण्यं नालभद्भरतर्षभ। चण्डालयोनौ जातो हि कथं ब्राह्मण्यमाप्नुयात् ॥१३-३-१९॥
sthāne mataṅgo brāhmaṇyaṃ nālabhadbharatarṣabha। caṇḍālayonau jāto hi kathaṃ brāhmaṇyamāpnuyāt ॥13-3-19॥
[स्थाने (sthāne) - in the proper place; मतङ्गः (mataṅgaḥ) - Matanga (name); ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - Brahminhood; न (na) - not; अलभत् (alabhat) - obtained; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; चण्डालयोनौ (caṇḍālayonau) - in the womb of a Caṇḍāla woman; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; हि (hi) - indeed; कथम् (katham) - how; ब्राह्मण्यम् (brāhmaṇyam) - Brahminhood; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - could attain;]
(In the proper place, Matanga did not obtain Brahminhood, O bull among the Bharatas. Indeed, being born in the womb of a Caṇḍāla woman, how could he attain Brahminhood? (13-3-19))
O best of the Bharatas, Matanga did not attain Brahminhood in the proper way. Indeed, being born from a Caṇḍāla woman, how could he ever become a Brahmin? (13-3-19)
