श्रूयतां पार्थ तत्त्वेन विश्वामित्रो यथा पुरा। ब्राह्मणत्वं गतस्तात ब्रह्मर्षित्वं तथैव च ॥१३-४-१॥
śrūyatāṃ pārtha tattvena viśvāmitro yathā purā। brāhmaṇatvaṃ gatastāta brahmarṣitvaṃ tathaiva ca ॥13-4-1॥
[श्रूयतां (śrūyatām) - let it be heard; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in reality; विश्वामित्रः (viśvāmitraḥ) - Viśvāmitra; यथा (yathā) - as; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ब्राह्मणत्वम् (brāhmaṇatvam) - Brahminhood; गतः (gataḥ) - attained; तात (tāta) - dear one; ब्रह्मर्षित्वम् (brahmarṣitvam) - the state of a Brahmarṣi; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and;]
(Let it be heard, O son of Pṛthā, in reality, how Viśvāmitra formerly attained Brahminhood, dear one, and likewise the state of a Brahmarṣi.)
Listen, O Pārtha, to how Viśvāmitra, in truth, attained Brahminhood and also became a Brahmarṣi in former times, dear one. (13-4-1)
भरतस्यान्वये चैवाजमीढो नाम पार्थिवः। बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ यज्वा धर्मभृतां वरः ॥१३-४-२॥
bharatasyānvaye caivājamīḍho nāma pārthivaḥ। babhūva bharataśreṣṭha yajvā dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥13-4-2॥

(Of Bharata, in the lineage, and indeed, Ajamīḍha by name, king, was, best among the Bharatas, performer of sacrifices, of the upholders of dharma, the best.)
In the lineage of Bharata, there was a king named Ajamīḍha, who was the best among the Bharatas, a performer of sacrifices, and the foremost among the upholders of dharma. (13-4-2)
तस्य पुत्रो महानासीज्जह्नुर्नाम नरेश्वरः। दुहितृत्वमनुप्राप्ता गङ्गा यस्य महात्मनः ॥१३-४-३॥
tasya putro mahān āsīj jahnuḥ nāma nareśvaraḥ। duhitṛtvam anuprāptā gaṅgā yasya mahātmanaḥ ॥13-4-3॥

(Of him son great was Jahnu by name, lord of men. Daughterhood attained Gaṅgā of whose great soul.)
His son was the great Jahnu, lord of men. Gaṅgā, of his great soul, attained the status of daughter. (13-4-3)
तस्यात्मजस्तुल्यगुणः सिन्धुद्वीपो महायशाः। सिन्धुद्वीपाच्च राजर्षिर्बलाकाश्वो महाबलः ॥१३-४-४॥
tasyātmajastulyaguṇaḥ sindhudvīpo mahāyaśāḥ। sindhudvīpācca rājarṣirbalākāśvo mahābalaḥ ॥13-4-4॥

वल्लभस्तस्य तनयः साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः। कुशिकस्तस्य तनयः सहस्राक्षसमद्युतिः ॥१३-४-५॥
vallabhas tasya tanayaḥ sākṣād dharma iva aparaḥ। kuśikas tasya tanayaḥ sahasrākṣa-sama-dyutiḥ ॥13-4-5॥

(The dear one’s son, directly like another Dharma; Kuśika, his son, equal in brilliance to the thousand-eyed.)
His beloved son was, as it were, another Dharma incarnate; Kuśika, his son, was as radiant as Indra, the thousand-eyed. (13-4-5)
कुशिकस्यात्मजः श्रीमान्गाधिर्नाम जनेश्वरः। अपुत्रः स महाबाहुर्वनवासमुदावसत् ॥१३-४-६॥
kuśikasya ātmajaḥ śrīmān gādhir nāma janeśvaraḥ। aputraḥ sa mahābāhur vanavāsam udāvasat ॥13-4-6॥

कन्या जज्ञे सुता तस्य वने निवसतः सतः। नाम्ना सत्यवती नाम रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि ॥१३-४-७॥
kanyā jajñe sutā tasya vane nivasataḥ sataḥ। nāmnā satyavatī nāma rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi ॥13-4-7॥
[कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; girl; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; सुता (sutā) - daughter; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; वने (vane) - in the forest; निवसतः (nivasataḥ) - dwelling; residing; सतः (sataḥ) - being; existing; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by name; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; नाम (nāma) - name; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in form; in appearance; अप्रतिमा (apratimā) - incomparable; matchless; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]

A maiden was born as his daughter while he was residing in the forest; she was named Satyavati, and in beauty she was without equal on earth. (13-4-7)
तां वव्रे भार्गवः श्रीमांश्च्यवनस्यात्मजः प्रभुः। ऋचीक इति विख्यातो विपुले तपसि स्थितः ॥१३-४-८॥
tāṃ vavre bhārgavaḥ śrīmāṃścyavanasya ātmajaḥ prabhuḥ। ṛcīka iti vikhyāto vipule tapasi sthitaḥ ॥13-4-8॥

The prosperous Bhārgava, lord Ṛcīka, son of Cyavana, who is well-known and established in abundant penance, chose her. (13-4-8)
स तां न प्रददौ तस्मै ऋचीकाय महात्मने। दरिद्र इति मत्वा वै गाधिः शत्रुनिबर्हणः ॥१३-४-९॥
sa tāṃ na pradadau tasmai ṛcīkāya mahātmane। daridra iti matvā vai gādhiḥ śatrunibarhaṇaḥ ॥13-4-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तां (tāṃ) - her; न (na) - not; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; ऋचीकाय (ṛcīkāya) - to Ṛcīka; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled; दरिद्र (daridra) - poor; इति (iti) - thus; मत्वा (matvā) - having thought; वै (vai) - indeed; गाधिः (gādhiḥ) - Gādhi; शत्रुनिबर्हणः (śatrunibarhaṇaḥ) - destroyer of enemies;]

प्रत्याख्याय पुनर्यान्तमब्रवीद्राजसत्तमः। शुल्कं प्रदीयतां मह्यं ततो वेत्स्यसि मे सुताम् ॥१३-४-१०॥
pratyākhyāya punaryāntamabravīdrājasattamaḥ। śulkaṃ pradīyatāṃ mahyaṃ tato vetsyasi me sutām ॥13-4-10॥
[प्रत्याख्याय (pratyākhyāya) - having rejected; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यान्तम् (yāntam) - departing; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - O best of kings; शुल्कम् (śulkaṃ) - bride-price; प्रदीयताम् (pradīyatām) - let it be given; महि्यम् (mahyaṃ) - to me; ततः (tataḥ) - then; वेत्स्यसि (vetsyasi) - you will obtain; मे (me) - my; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter;]
(Having rejected, again departing, said, O best of kings; bride-price, let it be given, to me; then, you will obtain, my, daughter.)
Having rejected (your request), as you were departing again, the best of kings said: "Let the bride-price be given to me; then you will obtain my daughter." (13-4-10)

किं प्रयच्छामि राजेन्द्र तुभ्यं शुल्कमहं नृप। दुहितुर्ब्रूह्यसंसक्तो मात्राभूत्ते विचारणा ॥१३-४-११॥
kiṁ prayacchāmi rājendra tubhyaṁ śulkam ahaṁ nṛpa। duhitur brūhya saṁsaktaḥ mātrā bhūt te vicāraṇā ॥13-4-11॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; प्रयच्छामि (prayacchāmi) - I give; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṁ) - to you; शुल्कम् (śulkam) - bride-price; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; दुहितुः (duhituḥ) - of the daughter; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; असंसक्तः (asaṁsaktaḥ) - not attached; मात्रा (mātrā) - by the mother; भूत् (bhūt) - has become; ते (te) - your; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration;]
(What shall I give, O king, to you as bride-price, I, O king? Of the daughter, tell, not attached by the mother, has become your consideration.)
O king, what bride-price shall I give you? Tell me regarding your daughter; since the mother is not attached, the decision is yours. (13-4-11)

चन्द्ररश्मिप्रकाशानां हयानां वातरंहसाम्। एकतः श्यामकर्णानां सहस्रं देहि भार्गव ॥१३-४-१२॥
candrarāśmiprakāśānāṃ hayānāṃ vātaraṃhasām। ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṃ sahasraṃ dehi bhārgava ॥13-4-12॥
[चन्द्ररश्मि (candra-raśmi) - moon-ray; प्रकाशानां (prakāśānām) - of the shining; हयानां (hayānām) - of horses; वातरंहसाम् (vāta-raṃhasām) - of wind-speed; एकतः (ekataḥ) - on one side; श्यामकर्णानां (śyāma-karṇānām) - of dark-eared; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; देहि (dehi) - give; भार्गव (bhārgava) - O Bhārgava;]
(Of moon-ray-shining horses of wind-speed, on one side, of dark-eared, a thousand, give, O Bhārgava.)
O Bhārgava, give a thousand dark-eared horses, shining like moon-rays and swift as the wind, on one side. (13-4-12)

ततः स भृगुशार्दूलश्च्यवनस्यात्मजः प्रभुः। अब्रवीद्वरुणं देवमादित्यं पतिमम्भसाम् ॥१३-४-१३॥
tataḥ sa bhṛguśārdūlaś cyavanasya ātmajaḥ prabhuḥ। abravīd varuṇam devam ādityam patim ambhasām ॥13-4-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; भृगुशार्दूलः (bhṛguśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among the Bhṛgus; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; आत्मजः (ātmajaḥ) - son; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वरुणं (varuṇam) - Varuṇa; देवम् (devam) - god; आदित्यं (ādityam) - Āditya; पतिम् (patim) - lord; अम्भसाम् (ambhasām) - of the waters;]
(Then he, the tiger among the Bhṛgus, the son of Cyavana, the lord, said to Varuṇa, the god, the Āditya, the lord of the waters.)
Then, the illustrious son of Cyavana, the tiger among the Bhṛgus, addressed Varuṇa, the god Āditya, the lord of the waters. (13-4-13)
एकतः श्यामकर्णानां हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम्। सहस्रं वातवेगानां भिक्षे त्वां देवसत्तम ॥१३-४-१४॥
ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānāṃ hayānāṃ candravarcasām। sahasraṃ vātavegānāṃ bhikṣe tvāṃ devasattama ॥13-4-14॥
[एकतः (ekataḥ) - from one side; श्यामकर्णानाम् (śyāmakarṇānām) - of black-eared; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of horses; चन्द्रवर्चसाम् (candravarcasām) - of moon-bright; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; वातवेगानाम् (vātavegānām) - of wind-speed; भिक्षे (bhikṣe) - I request; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; देवसत्तम (devasattama) - O best of the gods;]
(From one side, of black-eared, of horses, of moon-bright, a thousand, of wind-speed, I request, you, O best of the gods.)
O best of the gods, I request you for a thousand moon-bright, black-eared horses of wind-speed from one side. (13-4-14)
तथेति वरुणो देव आदित्यो भृगुसत्तमम्। उवाच यत्र ते छन्दस्तत्रोत्थास्यन्ति वाजिनः ॥१३-४-१५॥
tatheti varuṇo deva ādityo bhṛgusattamam। uvāca yatra te chandastatrotthāsyanti vājinaḥ ॥13-4-15॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; इति (iti) - so; thus; (end-quote); वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; (the deity); देव (deva) - god; deity; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - Āditya; (sun-god); भृगुसत्तमम् (bhṛgusattamam) - O best of the Bhṛgus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke; यत्र (yatra) - where; ते (te) - your; to you; छन्दः (chandas) - meter; Vedic hymn; तत्र (tatra) - there; उत्थास्यन्ति (utthāsyanti) - will arise; will emerge; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - steeds; horses;]
(Thus, so, Varuṇa, god, Āditya, O best of the Bhṛgus, said: Where your meter (hymn) is, there the steeds will arise.)
Varuṇa, the god Āditya, said to the best of the Bhṛgus: "Thus it is." Where your hymn is, there the steeds will arise. (13-4-15)
ध्यातमात्रे ऋचीकेन हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम्। गङ्गाजलात्समुत्तस्थौ सहस्रं विपुलौजसाम् ॥१३-४-१६॥
dhyātamātre ṛcīkena hayānāṃ candravarcasām। gaṅgājalātsamuttasthau sahasraṃ vipulaujasām ॥13-4-16॥
[ध्यातमात्रे (dhyātamātre) - upon being meditated; only; ऋचीकेन (ṛcīkena) - by Ṛcīka; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of horses; चन्द्रवर्चसाम् (candravarcasām) - having the lustre of the moon; गङ्गाजलात् (gaṅgājalāt) - from the water of the Gaṅgā; समुत्तस्थौ (samuttasthau) - arose; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; विपुलौजसाम् (vipulaujasām) - of great strength;]
(Upon being meditated by Ṛcīka, of horses having the lustre of the moon, from the water of the Gaṅgā arose a thousand of great strength.)
As soon as Ṛcīka meditated, a thousand horses of great strength and moon-like lustre arose from the waters of the Gaṅgā. (13-4-16)
अदूरे कन्यकुब्जस्य गङ्गायास्तीरमुत्तमम्। अश्वतीर्थं तदद्यापि मानवाः परिचक्षते ॥१३-४-१७॥
adūre kanyakubjasya gaṅgāyās tīram uttamam। aśvatīrthaṃ tad adyāpi mānavāḥ paricakṣate ॥13-4-17॥
[अदूरे (adūre) - not far; कन्यकुब्जस्य (kanyakubjasya) - of Kanyakubja; गङ्गायाः (gaṅgāyāḥ) - of the Ganga; तीरम् (tīram) - bank; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; अश्वतीर्थम् (aśvatīrtham) - Aśvatīrtha; तत् (tat) - that; अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - humans; परिचक्षते (paricakṣate) - call;]
(Not far from Kanyakubja, of the Ganga, bank, excellent, Aśvatīrtha, that, even today, humans, call.)
Not far from Kanyakubja, there is an excellent bank of the Ganga called Aśvatīrtha, which even today people refer to as such. (13-4-17)
तत्तदा गाधये तात सहस्रं वाजिनां शुभम्। ऋचीकः प्रददौ प्रीतः शुल्कार्थं जपतां वरः ॥१३-४-१८॥
tattadā gādhaye tāta sahasraṃ vājināṃ śubham। ṛcīkaḥ pradadau prītaḥ śulkārthaṃ japatāṃ varaḥ ॥13-4-18॥
[तत्तदा (tattadā) - at that time; then; गाधये (gādhaye) - to Gādhi; तात (tāta) - O father; सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; वाजिनां (vājināṃ) - of horses; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; ऋचीकः (ṛcīkaḥ) - Ṛcīka; प्रददौ (pradadau) - gave; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - being pleased; शुल्कार्थं (śulkārthaṃ) - for the bride-price; जपतां (japatāṃ) - of the reciters; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(At that time, to Gādhi, O father, a thousand auspicious horses, Ṛcīka gave, being pleased, for the bride-price, the best of reciters.)
Then, O father, Ṛcīka, the best among reciters, being pleased, gave a thousand auspicious horses to Gādhi as the bride-price. (13-4-18)
ततः स विस्मितो राजा गाधिः शापभयेन च। ददौ तां समलङ्कृत्य कन्यां भृगुसुताय वै ॥१३-४-१९॥
tataḥ sa vismito rājā gādhiḥ śāpabhayena ca। dadau tāṃ samalaṅkṛtya kanyāṃ bhṛgusutāya vai ॥13-4-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; राजा (rājā) - king; गाधिः (gādhiḥ) - Gādhi; शापभयेन (śāpabhayena) - by fear of curse; च (ca) - and; ददौ (dadau) - gave; ताम् (tām) - her; समलङ्कृत्य (samalaṅkṛtya) - after adorning; कन्याम् (kanyām) - maiden; भृगुसुताय (bhṛgusutāya) - to the son of Bhṛgu; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Then he, the astonished king Gādhi, and by fear of curse, gave her, after adorning, the maiden, to the son of Bhṛgu, indeed.)
Then, the astonished King Gādhi, out of fear of the curse, adorned his daughter and gave her to the son of Bhṛgu. (13-4-19)
जग्राह पाणिं विधिना तस्य ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमः। सा च तं पतिमासाद्य परं हर्षमवाप ह ॥१३-४-२०॥
jagrāha pāṇiṃ vidhinā tasya brahmarṣisattamaḥ। sā ca taṃ patim āsādya paraṃ harṣam avāpa ha ॥13-4-20॥
[जग्राह (jagrāha) - he seized; he took; he grasped; पाणिं (pāṇim) - hand; विधिना (vidhinā) - according to the rite; by the rule; तस्य (tasya) - his; ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमः (brahmarṣisattamaḥ) - the foremost among Brahmarṣis; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; तं (taṃ) - him; पतिम् (patim) - husband; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having obtained; having reached; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; highest; हर्षम् (harṣam) - joy; delight; अवाप (avāpa) - she attained; she obtained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(The foremost among Brahmarṣis seized his hand according to the rite; and she, having obtained him as husband, attained supreme joy indeed.)
The foremost of the Brahmarṣis took his hand in accordance with the rite; and she, having gained him as her husband, experienced the highest joy. (13-4-20)
स तुतोष च विप्रर्षिस्तस्या वृत्तेन भारत। छन्दयामास चैवैनां वरेण वरवर्णिनीम् ॥१३-४-२१॥
sa tutoṣa ca viprarṣis tasyā vṛttena bhārata। chandayāmāsa caiva enāṃ vareṇa varavarṇinīm ॥13-4-21॥
[स (sa) - he; तुतोष (tutoṣa) - became pleased; च (ca) - and; विप्रर्षि (viprarṣi) - the sage among Brāhmaṇas; तस्या (tasyā) - her; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - by conduct; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; छन्दयामास (chandayāmāsa) - offered (her a boon); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; एनाम् (enām) - her; वरेण (vareṇa) - with a boon; वरवर्णिनीम् (varavarṇinīm) - the one of excellent complexion;]
(He became pleased and the sage among Brāhmaṇas, by her conduct, O Bhārata, and indeed offered her, the one of excellent complexion, a boon.)
O Bhārata, the sage among Brāhmaṇas was pleased with her conduct and offered the beautiful-complexioned woman a boon. (13-4-21)
मात्रे तत्सर्वमाचख्यौ सा कन्या राजसत्तमम्। अथ तामब्रवीन्माता सुतां किञ्चिदवाङ्मुखीम् ॥१३-४-२२॥
mātre tatsarvamācakhyau sā kanyā rājasattamam। atha tāmabravīnmātā sutāṃ kiñcidavāṅmukhīm ॥13-4-22॥
[मात्रे (mātre) - to the mother; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - she told; सा (sā) - she; कन्या (kanyā) - the maiden; राजसत्तमम् (rājasattamam) - the best of kings; अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; माता (mātā) - the mother; सुताम् (sutām) - the daughter; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; अवाङ्मुखीम् (avāṅmukhīm) - with face turned down;]
(To the mother, that all she told, she, the maiden, the best of kings. Then her said the mother to the daughter, somewhat with face turned down. (13-4-22))
The maiden told her mother everything about the best of kings. Then the mother, seeing her daughter somewhat downcast, spoke to her. (13-4-22)
ममापि पुत्रि भर्ता ते प्रसादं कर्तुमर्हति। अपत्यस्य प्रदानेन समर्थः स महातपाः ॥१३-४-२३॥
mamāpi putri bhartā te prasādaṃ kartum arhati। apatyasya pradānena samarthaḥ sa mahātapāḥ ॥13-4-23॥
[मम (mama) - of me; my; अपि (api) - also; even; पुत्रि (putri) - O daughter; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; ते (te) - your; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; grace; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; to grant; अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; deserves; अपत्यस्य (apatyasya) - of offspring; of a child; प्रदानेन (pradānena) - by giving; by bestowal; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; competent; स (sa) - he; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; one of great austerity;]
(My also O daughter husband your favor to do is worthy. Of offspring by giving capable he great ascetic.)
O daughter, my husband too is worthy to grant you favor. He, the great ascetic, is capable of bestowing offspring by his power. (13-4-23)
ततः सा त्वरितं गत्वा तत्सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत्। मातुश्चिकीर्षितं राजन्नृचीकस्तामथाब्रवीत् ॥१३-४-२४॥
tataḥ sā tvaritaṃ gatvā tatsarvaṃ pratyavedayat। mātuś cikīrṣitaṃ rājan ṛcīkas tām athābravīt ॥13-4-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; सा (sā) - she; त्वरितं (tvaritam) - quickly; swiftly; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; everything; प्रत्यवेदयत् (pratyavedayat) - reported; informed; मातुः (mātuḥ) - of the mother; चिकीर्षितं (cikīrṣitam) - intended to be done; desired to be done; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ऋचीकः (ṛcīkaḥ) - Ṛcīka; ताम् (tām) - her; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then she, having gone quickly, reported all that. Of the mother, the intended action, O king, Ṛcīka then said to her. (13-4-24))
Then she quickly went and reported everything. Ṛcīka then spoke to her, O king, about what her mother intended to do. (13-4-24)
गुणवन्तमपत्यं वै त्वं च सा जनयिष्यथः। जनन्यास्तव कल्याणि मा भूद्वै प्रणयोऽन्यथा ॥१३-४-२५॥
guṇavantamapatyaṃ vai tvaṃ ca sā janayiṣyathaḥ। jananyāstava kalyāṇi mā bhūdvai praṇayo'nyathā ॥13-4-25॥
[गुणवन्तम् (guṇavantam) - endowed with virtues; अपत्यं (apatyaṃ) - offspring; वै (vai) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; जनयिष्यथः (janayiṣyathaḥ) - will beget (dual); जनन्याः (jananyāḥ) - of the mother; तव (tava) - your; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; मा (mā) - do not; भूत् (bhūt) - let there be; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रणयः (praṇayaḥ) - affection; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Endowed with virtues offspring indeed you and she will beget; of the mother your O auspicious one do not let there be indeed affection otherwise.)
You and she will indeed beget a virtuous child; O auspicious one, let there not be any other affection for your mother. (13-4-25)
तव चैव गुणश्लाघी पुत्र उत्पत्स्यते शुभे। अस्मद्वंशकरः श्रीमांस्तव भ्राता च वंशकृत् ॥१३-४-२६॥
tava caiva guṇaślāghī putra utpatsyate śubhe। asmadvaṃśakaraḥ śrīmāṃstava bhrātā ca vaṃśakṛt ॥13-4-26॥
[तव (tava) - of you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गुणश्लाघी (guṇaślāghī) - one who praises virtues; पुत्र (putra) - son; उत्पत्स्यते (utpatsyate) - will be born; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; अस्मद्वंशकरः (asmadvaṃśakaraḥ) - one who will continue our lineage; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - prosperous; तव (tava) - your; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; च (ca) - and; वंशकृत् (vaṃśakṛt) - one who continues the lineage;]
(Of you and indeed, one who praises virtues, a son will be born, O auspicious one. One who will continue our lineage, prosperous, your brother and one who continues the lineage. (13-4-26))
O auspicious one, a son of yours, who will praise virtues, will be born. He will be prosperous, continue our lineage, and your brother will also be a continuer of the lineage. (13-4-26)
ऋतुस्नाता च साश्वत्थं त्वं च वृक्षमुदुम्बरम्। परिष्वजेथाः कल्याणि तत इष्टमवाप्स्यथः ॥१३-४-२७॥
ṛtusnātā ca sāśvatthaṃ tvaṃ ca vṛkṣamudumbaram। pariṣvajethāḥ kalyāṇi tata iṣṭam avāpsyathaḥ ॥13-4-27॥
[ऋतुस्नाता (ṛtusnātā) - one who has bathed after menstruation; च (ca) - and; साश्वत्थम् (sāśvattham) - with the aśvattha tree; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; वृक्षम् (vṛkṣam) - tree; उदुम्बरम् (udumbaram) - udumbara (fig) tree; परिष्वजेथाः (pariṣvajethāḥ) - you should embrace; कल्याणि (kalyāṇi) - O auspicious one; ततः (tataḥ) - then; इष्टम् (iṣṭam) - desired; अवाप्स्यथः (avāpsyathaḥ) - you both will obtain;]
(One who has bathed after menstruation and with the aśvattha tree, you and the udumbara tree, you should embrace, O auspicious one; then the desired (result) you both will obtain.)
O auspicious one, after your purificatory bath, you and the aśvattha tree, and the udumbara tree, should embrace each other; then you both will obtain your desired result. (13-4-27)
चरुद्वयमिदं चैव मन्त्रपूतं शुचिस्मिते। त्वं च सा चोपयुञ्जीथां ततः पुत्राववाप्स्यथः ॥१३-४-२८॥
carudvayam idaṃ caiva mantrapūtaṃ śucismite। tvaṃ ca sā copayuñjīthāṃ tataḥ putrāv avāpsyathaḥ ॥13-4-28॥
[चरु (caru) - sacrificial food; द्वयम् (dvayam) - two; pair; इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मन्त्रपूतम् (mantrapūtam) - purified by mantra; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; उपयुञ्जीथाम् (upayuñjīthām) - should partake; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पुत्रौ (putrau) - two sons; अवाप्स्यथः (avāpsyathaḥ) - you both will obtain;]
(Sacrificial food two this and indeed purified by mantra O pure-smiling one; you and she and should partake; then two sons you both will obtain.)
O pure-smiling one, you and she should both partake of these two portions of sacrificial food, purified by mantra; then you both will obtain two sons. (13-4-28)
ततः सत्यवती हृष्टा मातरं प्रत्यभाषत। यदृचीकेन कथितं तच्चाचख्यौ चरुद्वयम् ॥१३-४-२९॥
tataḥ satyavatī hṛṣṭā mātaraṃ pratyabhāṣata। yad ṛcīkena kathitaṃ tac cācakhyau carudvayam ॥13-4-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; (proper name); हृष्टा (hṛṣṭā) - gladdened; delighted; मातरं (mātaraṃ) - mother; (accusative); प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; spoke to; यत् (yat) - which; what; ऋचीकेन (ṛcīkena) - by Ṛcīka; (proper name, instrumental); कथितं (kathitaṃ) - told; spoken; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; आचख्यौ (ācakhyau) - related; narrated; चरुद्वयम् (carudvayam) - the two offerings; both oblations;]
(Then Satyavati, gladdened, addressed her mother. What was told by Ṛcīka, that also she related, the two offerings. (13-4-29))
Then Satyavati, delighted, spoke to her mother. She also told her about what Ṛcīka had said, regarding the two offerings. (13-4-29)
तामुवाच ततो माता सुतां सत्यवतीं तदा। पुत्रि मूर्ध्ना प्रपन्नायाः कुरुष्व वचनं मम ॥१३-४-३०॥
tām uvāca tato mātā sutāṃ satyavatīṃ tadā। putri mūrdhnā prapannāyāḥ kuruṣva vacanaṃ mama ॥13-4-30॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; माता (mātā) - mother; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; सत्यवतीम् (satyavatīm) - Satyavati; तदा (tadā) - then; पुत्रि (putri) - O daughter; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - with the head; प्रपन्नायाः (prapannāyāḥ) - to one who has taken refuge; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; मम (mama) - my;]
(Her said then mother daughter Satyavati then. O daughter, to one who has taken refuge with the head, do my word.)
Then the mother said to her daughter Satyavati: "O daughter, do my bidding for one who has bowed her head in refuge." (13-4-30)
भर्त्रा य एष दत्तस्ते चरुर्मन्त्रपुरस्कृतः। एतं प्रयच्छ मह्यं त्वं मदीयं त्वं गृहाण च ॥१३-४-३१॥
bharttrā ya eṣa dattaste carurmantrapuraskṛtaḥ। etaṃ prayaccha mahyaṃ tvaṃ madīyaṃ tvaṃ gṛhāṇa ca ॥13-4-31॥
[भर्त्रा (bharttrā) - by the husband; य (ya) - which; एष (eṣa) - this; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - given; ते (te) - to you; चरुः (caruḥ) - offering; मन्त्रपुरस्कृतः (mantrapuraskṛtaḥ) - preceded by mantra; एतं (etaṃ) - this; प्रयच्छ (prayaccha) - give; महि (mahyaṃ) - to me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मदीयं (madīyaṃ) - mine; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; च (ca) - and;]
(By the husband which this given to you offering preceded by mantra; this give to me you mine you accept and.)
This offering, which has been given to you by your husband and is preceded by mantras, please give this to me, and you accept what is mine as well. (13-4-31)
व्यत्यासं वृक्षयोश्चापि करवाव शुचिस्मिते। यदि प्रमाणं वचनं मम मातुरनिन्दिते ॥१३-४-३२॥
vyatyāsaṃ vṛkṣayoścāpi karavāva śucismite। yadi pramāṇaṃ vacanaṃ mama māturanindite ॥13-4-32॥
[व्यत्यासं (vyatyāsaṃ) - exchange; change; वृक्षयोः (vṛkṣayoḥ) - of the two trees; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; करवाव (karavāva) - let us do; let us make; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiling one; यदि (yadi) - if; प्रमाणं (pramāṇaṃ) - authority; proof; वचनं (vacanaṃ) - word; statement; मम (mama) - my; मातुरनिन्दिते (māturanindite) - O blameless one of my mother;]
(Exchange of the two trees also let us do, O pure-smiling one; if my word is authority, O blameless one of my mother.)
O pure-smiling one, let us also exchange the two trees, if my word is authoritative, O blameless one born of my mother. (13-4-32)
व्यक्तं भगवता चात्र कृतमेवं भविष्यति। ततो मे त्वच्चरौ भावः पादपे च सुमध्यमे ॥ कथं विशिष्टो भ्राता ते भवेदित्येव चिन्तय ॥१३-४-३३॥
vyaktaṃ bhagavatā cātra kṛtam evaṃ bhaviṣyati। tato me tvac-carau bhāvaḥ pādape ca sumadhyame ॥ kathaṃ viśiṣṭo bhrātā te bhaved ity eva cintaya ॥13-4-33॥
[व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - manifested; revealed; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the Lord; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; एवम् (evam) - thus; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - my; त्वच्चरौ (tvac-carau) - your feet; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - feeling; disposition; पादपे (pādale) - in the tree; च (ca) - and; सुमध्यमे (sumadhyame) - O slender-waisted one; कथम् (katham) - how; विशिष्टः (viśiṣṭaḥ) - distinguished; special; भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; ते (te) - your; भवेत् (bhavet) - may become; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; चिन्तय (cintaya) - think; consider;]
(Manifested by the Lord and here done thus will be. Then my feeling at your feet, O slender-waisted one, and in the tree. How may your brother become distinguished, thus indeed think.)
This has been manifested by the Lord and done here in this way; thus it will be. Therefore, O slender-waisted one, my feeling is at your feet and in the tree. Consider how your brother may become distinguished. (13-4-33)
तथा च कृतवत्यौ ते माता सत्यवती च सा। अथ गर्भावनुप्राप्ते उभे ते वै युधिष्ठिर ॥१३-४-३४॥
tathā ca kṛtavatyau te mātā satyavatī ca sā। atha garbhāvanuprāpte ubhe te vai yudhiṣṭhira ॥13-4-34॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; च (ca) - and; कृतवत्यौ (kṛtavatyau) - having done (dual); ते (te) - those; माता (mātā) - mother; सत्यवती (satyavatī) - Satyavati; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; अथ (atha) - then; गर्भावनुप्राप्ते (garbhāvanuprāpte) - when pregnancy had not occurred (locative dual); उभे (ubhe) - both (dual); ते (te) - those; वै (vai) - indeed; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira;]
(Thus and having done those mother Satyavati and she. Then when pregnancy had not occurred both those indeed Yudhishthira.)
Thus, having done so, the mother Satyavati and she. Then, when pregnancy had not occurred, both of them, O Yudhishthira, indeed. (13-4-34)
दृष्ट्वा गर्भमनुप्राप्तां भार्यां स च महानृषिः। उवाच तां सत्यवतीं दुर्मना भृगुसत्तमः ॥१३-४-३५॥
dṛṣṭvā garbham anuprāptāṃ bhāryāṃ sa ca mahān ṛṣiḥ। uvāca tāṃ satyavatīṃ durmanā bhṛgusattamaḥ ॥13-4-35॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गर्भम् (garbham) - embryo; अनुप्राप्ताम् (anuprāptām) - having obtained; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ताम् (tām) - to her; सत्यवतीम् (satyavatīm) - Satyavati; दुर्मनाः (durmanāḥ) - distressed in mind; भृगुसत्तमः (bhṛgusattamaḥ) - the best of the Bhṛgus;]
(Having seen the wife who had obtained an embryo, he and the great sage, the best of the Bhṛgus, distressed in mind, said to Satyavati.)
Seeing that his wife Satyavati had conceived, the great sage, the foremost of the Bhṛgus, spoke to her with a troubled mind. (13-4-35)
व्यत्यासेनोपयुक्तस्ते चरुर्व्यक्तं भविष्यति। व्यत्यासः पादपे चापि सुव्यक्तं ते कृतः शुभे ॥१३-४-३६॥
vyatyāsenopayuktaste carurvyaktaṃ bhaviṣyati। vyatyāsaḥ pādape cāpi suvyaktaṃ te kṛtaḥ śubhe ॥13-4-36॥
[व्यत्यासेन (vyatyāsena) - by exchange; उपयुक्तः (upayuktaḥ) - used; ते (te) - by you; चरुः (caruḥ) - offering; व्यक्तं (vyaktam) - clearly; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; व्यत्यासः (vyatyāsaḥ) - exchange; पादपे (pādape) - on the tree; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुव्यक्तं (suvyaktam) - very clearly; ते (te) - by you; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
(By exchange, the offering used by you will become clear. The exchange on the tree also has been very clearly done by you, O auspicious one.)
By your exchange, the offering you used will become evident. The exchange on the tree has also been very clearly performed by you, O auspicious one. (13-4-36)
मया हि विश्वं यद्ब्रह्म त्वच्चरौ संनिवेशितम्। क्षत्रवीर्यं च सकलं चरौ तस्या निवेशितम् ॥१३-४-३७॥
mayā hi viśvaṃ yad brahma tvac-carau saṃniveśitam। kṣatravīryaṃ ca sakalaṃ carau tasyā niveśitam ॥13-4-37॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; हि (hi) - indeed; विश्वं (viśvam) - the universe; यत् (yat) - which; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; त्वत् (tvat) - your; चरौ (carau) - feet; संनिवेशितम् (saṃniveśitam) - has been placed; क्षत्रवीर्यं (kṣatravīryam) - the power of kṣatriya; च (ca) - and; सकलं (sakalaṃ) - all; चरौ (carau) - feet; तस्या (tasyā) - her; निवेशितम् (niveśitam) - has been placed;]
(By me indeed the universe which is Brahman has been placed at your feet; the power of kṣatriya and all has been placed at her feet.)
Indeed, I have placed the universe, which is Brahman, at your feet; and all the power of the kṣatriya has been placed at her feet. (13-4-37)
त्रिलोकविख्यातगुणं त्वं विप्रं जनयिष्यसि। सा च क्षत्रं विशिष्टं वै तत एतत्कृतं मया ॥१३-४-३८॥
trilokavikhyāta-guṇaṃ tvaṃ vipraṃ janayiṣyasi। sā ca kṣatraṃ viśiṣṭaṃ vai tata etat kṛtaṃ mayā ॥13-4-38॥
[त्रिलोक (triloka) - three worlds; विख्यात (vikhyāta) - famous; गुणं (guṇam) - quality; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; विप्रं (vipram) - brāhmaṇa; जनयिष्यसि (janayiṣyasi) - will generate; सा (sā) - she; च (ca) - and; क्षत्रं (kṣatram) - kṣatriya; विशिष्टं (viśiṣṭam) - distinguished; वै (vai) - indeed; तत (tata) - therefore; एतत् (etat) - this; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(You will generate a brāhmaṇa of qualities famous in the three worlds. And she will (generate) a distinguished kṣatriya indeed. Therefore, this has been done by me. (13-4-38))
You will beget a brāhmaṇa whose qualities are renowned throughout the three worlds, and she will beget a distinguished kṣatriya. Therefore, this has been done by me. (13-4-38)
व्यत्यासस्तु कृतो यस्मात्त्वया मात्रा तथैव च। तस्मात्सा ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठं माता ते जनयिष्यति ॥१३-४-३९॥
vyatyāsastu kṛto yasmāttvayā mātrā tathaiva ca। tasmātsā brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaṃ mātā te janayiṣyati ॥13-4-39॥
[व्यत्यासः (vyatyāsaḥ) - exchange; inversion; तु (tu) - but; indeed; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; made; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; since; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; मात्रा (mātrā) - with the mother; by the mother; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; in the same way; च (ca) - and; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; hence; सा (sā) - she; ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठम् (brāhmaṇaśreṣṭham) - the best of Brāhmaṇas; माता (mātā) - mother; ते (te) - your; to you; जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - will give birth; will produce;]
(But the exchange was done by you with the mother just so and; therefore she the best of Brāhmaṇas mother will give birth to you.)
But since you have made this exchange with the mother in this way, therefore, she, the best among Brāhmaṇas, will give birth to you. (13-4-39)
क्षत्रियं तूग्रकर्माणं त्वं भद्रे जनयिष्यसि। न हि ते तत्कृतं साधु मातृस्नेहेन भामिनि ॥१३-४-४०॥
kṣatriyaṃ tūgrakarmāṇaṃ tvaṃ bhadre janayiṣyasi। na hi te tatkṛtaṃ sādhu mātṛsnehenabhāmini ॥13-4-40॥
[क्षत्रियं (kṣatriyam) - warrior; तु (tu) - but; उग्रकर्माणं (ugrakarmāṇam) - of fierce deeds; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; जनयिष्यसि (janayiṣyasi) - will give birth; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; ते (te) - your; तत्कृतं (tatkṛtam) - that done; साधु (sādhu) - good; मातृस्नेहेन (mātṛsnehen) - by motherly affection; भामिनि (bhāmini) - O passionate lady;]
(A warrior of fierce deeds but you, O auspicious one, will give birth. Not indeed your that done good by motherly affection, O passionate lady.)

O best among the knowers of Brahman, as my wife is propitiating you and I am also beseeching you, please show your favor, O best of Brāhmaṇas, so that my son may not be a Kṣatriya. (13-4-43)
कामं ममोग्रकर्मा वै पौत्रो भवितुमर्हति। न तु मे स्यात्सुतो ब्रह्मन्नेष मे दीयतां वरः ॥१३-४-४४॥
kāmaṃ mamograkarmā vai pautro bhavitumarhati। na tu me syātsuto brahmann eṣa me dīyatāṃ varaḥ ॥13-4-44॥

(That not this kṣatriya, O king, Viśvāmitra, great ascetic; by Ṛcīka established Brahman, supreme, this, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, this Viśvāmitra, the great ascetic, is not a kṣatriya; by Ṛcīka, the supreme Brahman was established in him. (13-4-59)
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं तत्त्वेन भरतर्षभ। विश्वामित्रस्य वै जन्म सोमसूर्याग्नितेजसः ॥१३-४-६०॥
etat te sarvam ākhyātaṃ tattvena bharatarṣabha। viśvāmitrasya vai janma soma-sūryāgni-tejasaḥ ॥13-4-60॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - has been told; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; in essence; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; विश्वामित्रस्य (viśvāmitrasya) - of Viśvāmitra; वै (vai) - indeed; जन्म (janma) - birth; सोम (soma) - of Soma; सूर्य (sūrya) - of Sūrya; अग्नि (agni) - of Agni; तेजसः (tejasaḥ) - of the energy;]
(This to you all has been told truly, O bull among the Bharatas; of Viśvāmitra indeed the birth of Soma, Sūrya, Agni, of the energy. (13-4-60))
O best of the Bharatas, all this has been truly told to you: the birth of Viśvāmitra, indeed, is from the energies of Soma, Sūrya, and Agni. (13-4-60)
यत्र यत्र च संदेहो भूयस्ते राजसत्तम। तत्र तत्र च मां ब्रूहि च्छेत्तास्मि तव संशयान् ॥१३-४-६१॥

O best of kings, wherever you have any further doubt, there and there tell me; I am the remover of your doubts. (13-4-61)
