आनृशंसस्य धर्मस्य गुणान्भक्तजनस्य च। श्रोतुमिच्छामि कार्त्स्न्येन तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-५-१॥
ānṛśaṁsasya dharmasya guṇānbhaktajanasya ca। śrotumicchāmi kārtsnyena tanme brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-5-1॥
[आनृशंसस्य (ānṛśaṁsasya) - of non-cruelty; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of dharma; गुणान् (guṇān) - qualities; भक्तजनस्य (bhaktajanasya) - of the devoted person; च (ca) - and; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; कार्त्स्न्येन (kārtsnyena) - in entirety; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Of non-cruelty, of dharma, the qualities, of the devoted person and, to hear I desire, in entirety, that to me tell, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, I desire to hear in entirety the qualities of non-cruelty, of dharma, and of the devoted person; please tell me that. (13-5-1)

विषये काशिराजस्य ग्रामान्निष्क्रम्य लुब्धकः। सविषं काण्डमादाय मृगयामास वै मृगम् ॥१३-५-२॥
viṣaye kāśirājasya grāmānniṣkramya lubdhakaḥ। saviṣaṃ kāṇḍam ādāya mṛgayām āsa vai mṛgam ॥13-5-2॥
[विषये (viṣaye) - in the territory; काशिराजस्य (kāśirājasya) - of the king of Kāśi; ग्रामात् (grāmāt) - from the village; निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having gone out; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; सविषं (saviṣam) - with poison; काण्डम् (kāṇḍam) - stick; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - for hunting; आस (āsa) - he went; वै (vai) - indeed; मृगम् (mṛgam) - animal;]
(In the territory of the king of Kāśi, having gone out from the village, the hunter, having taken a stick with poison, indeed went for hunting the animal.)
In the territory of the king of Kāśi, a hunter left the village, took a poisoned stick, and indeed went to hunt an animal. (13-5-2)
तत्र चामिषलुब्धेन लुब्धकेन महावने। अविदूरे मृगं दृष्ट्वा बाणः प्रतिसमाहितः ॥१३-५-३॥
tatra cāmiṣalubdhena lubdhakena mahāvane। avidūre mṛgaṃ dṛṣṭvā bāṇaḥ pratisamāhitaḥ ॥13-5-3॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; अमिषलुब्धेन (amiṣalubdhena) - by one greedy for flesh; लुब्धकेन (lubdhakena) - by the hunter; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; अविदूरे (avidūre) - not far; मृगं (mṛgaṃ) - deer; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; बाणः (bāṇaḥ) - arrow; प्रतिसमाहितः (pratisamāhitaḥ) - aimed;]
(There and by one greedy for flesh, by the hunter, in the great forest, not far, having seen the deer, the arrow was aimed.)
There, in the great forest, a hunter greedy for flesh, having seen a deer not far away, aimed his arrow. (13-5-3)
तेन दुर्वारितास्त्रेण निमित्तचपलेषुणा। महान्वनतरुर्विद्धो मृगं तत्र जिघांसता ॥१३-५-४॥
tena durvāritāstreṇa nimittacapaleṣuṇā। mahānvanatarurviddho mṛgaṃ tatra jighāṃsatā ॥13-5-4॥
[तेन (tena) - by that; दुर्वारित (durvārita) - difficult to ward off; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by the weapon; निमित्त (nimitta) - aimed; चपल (capala) - unsteady; इषुणा (iṣuṇā) - by the arrow; महान् (mahān) - great; वनतरुः (vanataruḥ) - forest tree; विद्धः (viddhaḥ) - pierced; मृगं (mṛgam) - the deer; तत्र (tatra) - there; जिघांसता (jighāṃsatā) - desiring to kill;]
(By that difficult-to-ward-off weapon, by the unsteady arrow aimed, the great forest tree was pierced, the deer there (was) by the one desiring to kill.)
By that irresistible weapon, by the unsteady arrow aimed, the great forest tree was pierced as the one desiring to kill the deer there. (13-5-4)
स तीक्ष्णविषदिग्धेन शरेणातिबलात्कृतः। उत्सृज्य फलपत्राणि पादपः शोषमागतः ॥१३-५-५॥
sa tīkṣṇaviṣadigdhena śareṇātibalātkṛtaḥ। utsṛjya phalapatrāṇi pādapaḥ śoṣamāgataḥ ॥13-5-5॥
[स (sa) - he; तीक्ष्ण (tīkṣṇa) - sharp; विष (viṣa) - poison; दिग्धेन (digdhena) - smeared with; शरेण (śareṇa) - with an arrow; अतिबलात् (atibalāt) - by great force; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - struck; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - having abandoned; फल (phala) - fruits; पत्राणि (patrāṇi) - leaves; पादपः (pādapaḥ) - the tree; शोषम् (śoṣam) - dryness; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come;]
(He, struck by a sharp, poison-smeared arrow with great force, having abandoned fruits and leaves, the tree has come to dryness.)
Struck by a sharp, poison-smeared arrow with great force, the tree, having shed its fruits and leaves, has withered away. (13-5-5)
तस्मिन्वृक्षे तथाभूते कोटरेषु चिरोषितः। न जहाति शुको वासं तस्य भक्त्या वनस्पतेः ॥१३-५-६॥
tasminvṛkṣe tathābhūte koṭareṣu ciroṣitaḥ। na jahāti śuko vāsaṃ tasya bhaktyā vanaspateḥ ॥13-5-6॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वृक्षे (vṛkṣe) - tree; तथा (tathā) - thus; अभूते (abhūte) - being; कोटरेषु (koṭareṣu) - in the hollows; चिर (cira) - for a long time; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - dwelt; न (na) - not; जहाति (jahāti) - abandons; शुकः (śukaḥ) - parrot; वासं (vāsaṃ) - residence; तस्य (tasya) - of that; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; वनस्पतेः (vanaspateḥ) - of the tree;]
(In that tree thus being, in the hollows, having dwelt for a long time, not abandons the parrot the residence of that with devotion of the tree.)
Having long dwelt in the hollows of that tree, the parrot does not abandon its home there, out of devotion to the tree. (13-5-6)
निष्प्रचारो निराहारो ग्लानः शिथिलवागपि। कृतज्ञः सह वृक्षेण धर्मात्मा स व्यशुष्यत ॥१३-५-७॥
niṣpracāro nirāhāro glānaḥ śithilavāgapi। kṛtajñaḥ saha vṛkṣeṇa dharmātmā sa vyaśuṣyata ॥13-5-7॥
[निष्प्रचारः (niṣpracāraḥ) - without movement; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; ग्लानः (glānaḥ) - weak; शिथिलवाक् (śithilavāk) - with feeble speech; अपि (api) - also; कृतज्ञः (kṛtajñaḥ) - grateful; सह (saha) - together with; वृक्षेण (vṛkṣeṇa) - with the tree; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; सः (saḥ) - he; व्यशुष्यत (vyaśuṣyata) - dried up;]
(Without movement, without food, weak, with feeble speech also, grateful, together with the tree, righteous-souled, he dried up.)
He, grateful and righteous-souled, remained without movement, without food, weak, and with feeble speech, and dried up together with the tree. (13-5-7)
तमुदारं महासत्त्वमतिमानुषचेष्टितम्। समदुःखसुखं ज्ञात्वा विस्मितः पाकशासनः ॥१३-५-८॥
tamudāraṃ mahāsattvamatimānuṣaceṣṭitam। samaduḥkhasukhaṃ jñātvā vismitaḥ pākaśāsanaḥ ॥13-5-8॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उदारम् (udāram) - noble; महासत्त्वम् (mahāsattvam) - great-being; अति-मानुष-चेष्टितम् (ati-mānuṣa-ceṣṭitam) - superhuman-act; सम-दुःख-सुखम् (sama-duḥkha-sukham) - equal-in-pain-and-pleasure; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having-known; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra;]
(Him, noble, great-being, superhuman-act, equal-in-pain-and-pleasure, having-known, astonished, Indra.)
Indra, having recognized him as a noble, great being whose actions were superhuman and who was equal in pain and pleasure, was astonished. (13-5-8)
ततश्चिन्तामुपगतः शक्रः कथमयं द्विजः। तिर्यग्योनावसम्भाव्यमानृशंस्यं समास्थितः ॥१३-५-९॥
tataś cintām upagataḥ śakraḥ katham ayaṃ dvijaḥ। tiryag-yonau asambhāvyam ānṛśaṃsyaṃ samāsthitaḥ ॥13-5-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; चिन्ताम् (cintām) - thought; anxiety; उपगतः (upagataḥ) - approached; come to; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; Indra; कथम् (katham) - how; अयम् (ayam) - this; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - twice-born; Brāhmaṇa; तिर्यग्योनौ (tiryag-yonau) - in the womb of animals; in animal birth; असम्भाव्यम् (asambhāvyam) - impossible; inconceivable; आनृशंस्यम् (ānṛśaṃsyaṃ) - compassion; kindness; समास्थितः (samāsthitaḥ) - engaged in; established in;]
(Then, having come to thought, Śakra (Indra) (thought): How has this twice-born (Brāhmaṇa), engaged in compassion, come to an inconceivable (impossible) animal birth?)
Then Śakra (Indra) became thoughtful: "How has this Brāhmaṇa, who is established in compassion, come to be born in the animal womb, which is inconceivable?" (13-5-9)
अथ वा नात्र चित्रं हीत्यभवद्वासवस्य तु। प्राणिनामिह सर्वेषां सर्वं सर्वत्र दृश्यते ॥१३-५-१०॥
atha vā nātra citraṃ hītyabhavadvāsavasya tu। prāṇināmiha sarveṣāṃ sarvaṃ sarvatra dṛśyate ॥13-5-10॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; चित्रं (citraṃ) - wonder; marvel; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; इति (iti) - thus; so; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; was; वासवस्य (vāsavasya) - of Vāsava; of Indra; तु (tu) - but; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; इह (iha) - here; in this world; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; appears;]
(Now or not here wonder indeed thus became of Vāsava but; of living beings here of all all everywhere is seen.)
Now, or, there is nothing wonderful here—thus it was for Vāsava; but for all living beings here, everything is seen everywhere. (13-5-10)
ततो ब्राह्मणवेषेण मानुषं रूपमास्थितः। अवतीर्य महीं शक्रस्तं पक्षिणमुवाच ह ॥१३-५-११॥
tato brāhmaṇaveṣeṇa mānuṣaṃ rūpam āsthitaḥ। avatīrya mahīṃ śakrastaṃ pakṣiṇam uvāca ha ॥13-5-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ब्राह्मणवेषेण (brāhmaṇaveṣeṇa) - with the guise of a brāhmaṇa; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - human; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having assumed; अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; महीम् (mahīm) - earth; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; तम् (tam) - that; पक्षिणम् (pakṣiṇam) - bird; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, having assumed a human form with the guise of a brāhmaṇa, having descended to the earth, Indra indeed spoke to that bird.)
Then Indra, having taken on the appearance of a brāhmaṇa in human form, descended to the earth and spoke to that bird. (13-5-11)
शुक भोः पक्षिणां श्रेष्ठ दाक्षेयी सुप्रजास्त्वया। पृच्छे त्वा शुष्कमेतं वै कस्मान्न त्यजसि द्रुमम् ॥१३-५-१२॥
śuka bhoḥ pakṣiṇāṃ śreṣṭha dākṣeyī suprajāstvayā। pṛcche tvā śuṣkametaṃ vai kasmānna tyajasi drumam ॥13-5-12॥
[शुक (śuka) - parrot; भोः (bhoḥ) - O; पक्षिणां (pakṣiṇām) - of birds; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - best; दाक्षेयी (dākṣeyī) - O daughter of Dakṣa; सुप्रजा (suprajā) - having good offspring; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पृच्छे (pṛcche) - I ask; त्वा (tvā) - you; शुष्कम् (śuṣkam) - dry; एतं (etaṃ) - this; वै (vai) - indeed; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; न (na) - not; त्यजसि (tyajasi) - do you leave; द्रुमम् (drumam) - tree;]
(Parrot, O, of birds, best, O daughter of Dakṣa, having good offspring, by you, I ask, you, dry, this, indeed, why, not, do you leave, tree.)
O parrot, best among birds, O daughter of Dakṣa, you who have good offspring, I ask you: why do you not leave this dry tree? (13-5-12)
अथ पृष्टः शुकः प्राह मूर्ध्ना समभिवाद्य तम्। स्वागतं देवराजाय विज्ञातस्तपसा मया ॥१३-५-१३॥
atha pṛṣṭaḥ śukaḥ prāha mūrdhnā samabhivādya tam। svāgataṃ devarājāya vijñātaḥ tapasā mayā ॥13-5-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - having been asked; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; प्राह (prāha) - said; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - with (his) head; समभिवाद्य (samabhivādya) - having respectfully saluted; तम् (tam) - him; स्वागतं (svāgatam) - welcome; देवराजाय (devarājāya) - to the king of the gods; विज्ञातः (vijñātaḥ) - known; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Then, having been asked, Śuka said, having respectfully saluted him with (his) head: "Welcome to the king of the gods; (you are) known by me through austerity." (13-5-13))
Then, when asked, Śuka, after respectfully bowing his head to him, said: "Welcome, O king of the gods; I have come to know you through my austerities." (13-5-13)
ततो दशशताक्षेण साधु साध्विति भाषितम्। अहो विज्ञानमित्येवं तपसा पूजितस्ततः ॥१३-५-१४॥
tato daśaśatākṣeṇa sādhu sādhu iti bhāṣitam। aho vijñānam iti evam tapasā pūjitas tataḥ ॥13-5-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; दशशताक्षेण (daśaśatākṣeṇa) - by the one with ten hundred eyes; साधु (sādhu) - well done; साधु (sādhu) - well done; इति (iti) - thus; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; अहो (aho) - oh; विज्ञानम् (vijñānam) - knowledge; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - thus; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; पूजितः (pūjitaḥ) - honored; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter;]
(From then, by the one with ten hundred eyes, "Well done, well done" was spoken. Oh, knowledge, thus, thus, by austerity, honored thereafter.)
Then, Indra (the thousand-eyed) said, "Well done, well done." Thus, exclaiming "Oh, knowledge!" he was honored by austerity thereafter. (13-5-14)
तमेवं शुभकर्माणं शुकं परमधार्मिकम्। विजानन्नपि तां प्राप्तिं पप्रच्छ बलसूदनः ॥१३-५-१५॥
tam evaṃ śubhakarmāṇaṃ śukaṃ paramadhārmikam। vijānann api tāṃ prāptiṃ papraccha balasūdanaḥ ॥13-5-15॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; शुभकर्माणं (śubhakarmāṇam) - of auspicious deeds; शुकं (śukam) - Śuka; परमधार्मिकम् (paramadhārmikam) - supremely righteous; विजानन् (vijānann) - knowing; अपि (api) - even; तां (tāṃ) - that; प्राप्तिम् (prāptim) - attainment; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; बलसूदनः (balasūdanaḥ) - Bala-sūdana (destroyer of Bala);]
(Him thus of auspicious deeds Śuka supremely righteous, knowing even that attainment, asked Bala-sūdana.)
Bala-sūdana, knowing even that attainment, asked Śuka, who was supremely righteous and engaged in auspicious deeds, thus. (13-5-15)
निष्पत्रमफलं शुष्कमशरण्यं पतत्रिणाम्। किमर्थं सेवसे वृक्षं यदा महदिदं वनम् ॥१३-५-१६॥
niṣpatramaphalaṃ śuṣkamaśaraṇyaṃ patatriṇām। kimarthaṃ sevase vṛkṣaṃ yadā mahadidaṃ vanam ॥13-5-16॥
[निष्पत्रम् (niṣpatram) - devoid of leaves; अफलम् (aphalam) - fruitless; शुष्कम् (śuṣkam) - dry; अशरण्यम् (aśaraṇyam) - not a shelter; पतत्रिणाम् (patatriṇām) - for birds; किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what purpose; सेवसे (sevase) - do you serve; वृक्षम् (vṛkṣam) - tree; यदा (yadā) - when; महत् (mahat) - great; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वनम् (vanam) - forest;]
(Devoid of leaves, fruitless, dry, not a shelter for birds; for what purpose do you serve the tree, when this great forest (is here)?)
Why do you serve a tree that is leafless, fruitless, dry, and offers no shelter to birds, when this great forest is here? (13-5-16)
अन्येऽपि बहवो वृक्षाः पत्रसञ्छन्नकोटराः। शुभाः पर्याप्तसञ्चारा विद्यन्तेऽस्मिन्महावने ॥१३-५-१७॥
anye'pi bahavo vṛkṣāḥ patra-sañchanna-koṭarāḥ। śubhāḥ paryāpta-sañcārā vidyante'smin mahāvane ॥13-5-17॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; वृक्षाः (vṛkṣāḥ) - trees; पत्र (patra) - leaf; सञ्छन्न (sañchanna) - covered; कोटराः (koṭarāḥ) - hollows; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; पर्याप्त (paryāpta) - sufficient; सञ्चारा (sañcārā) - movement; विद्यन्ते (vidyante) - exist; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; महावने (mahāvane) - great forest;]
(Others also many trees leaf-covered hollows auspicious sufficient movement exist in this great forest.)
There are also many other trees with leaf-covered hollows, auspicious and with sufficient space for movement, in this great forest. (13-5-17)
गतायुषमसामर्थ्यं क्षीणसारं हतश्रियम्। विमृश्य प्रज्ञया धीर जहीमं ह्यस्थिरं द्रुमम् ॥१३-५-१८॥
gatāyuṣamasāmarthyaṃ kṣīṇasāraṃ hataśriyam। vimṛśya prajñayā dhīra jahīmaṃ hyasthiraṃ drumam ॥13-5-18॥
[गतायुषम् (gatāyuṣam) - whose life is gone; असामर्थ्यम् (asāmarthyam) - without strength; क्षीणसारम् (kṣīṇasāram) - whose essence is diminished; हतश्रियम् (hataśriyam) - whose splendor is destroyed; विमृश्य (vimṛśya) - having considered; प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - with wisdom; धीर (dhīra) - O wise one; जही (jahī) - abandon; इमम् (imam) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्थिरम् (asthiram) - unstable; द्रुमम् (drumam) - tree;]
(Whose life is gone, without strength, whose essence is diminished, whose splendor is destroyed; having considered with wisdom, O wise one, abandon this indeed unstable tree.)
O wise one, having considered with wisdom, abandon this tree whose life is gone, whose strength and essence are diminished, and whose splendor is destroyed, for it is indeed unstable. (13-5-18)
तदुपश्रुत्य धर्मात्मा शुकः शक्रेण भाषितम्। सुदीर्घमभिनिःश्वस्य दीनो वाक्यमुवाच ह ॥१३-५-१९॥
tad-upaśrutya dharmātmā śukaḥ śakreṇa bhāṣitam। sudīrgham-abhiniḥśvasya dīnaḥ vākyam-uvāca ha ॥13-5-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; उपश्रुत्य (upaśrutya) - having heard near; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra; भाषितम् (bhāṣitam) - spoken; सुदीर्घम् (sudīrgham) - very long; अभिनिःश्वस्य (abhiniḥśvasya) - having deeply sighed; दीनः (dīnaḥ) - distressed; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(That having heard near, the righteous-souled Śuka, by Śakra spoken, having deeply sighed very long, distressed, speech said indeed.)
Having heard what was spoken by Śakra, the righteous Śuka, deeply sighing for a long time and distressed, indeed spoke these words. (13-5-19)
अनतिक्रमणीयानि दैवतानि शचीपते। यत्राभवस्तत्र भवस्तन्निबोध सुराधिप ॥१३-५-२०॥
anatikramaṇīyāni daivatāni śacīpate। yatrābhavas tatra bhavas tan nibodha surādhipa ॥13-5-20॥
[अनतिक्रमणीयानि (anatikramaṇīyāni) - not-to-be-transgressed; दैवतानि (daivatāni) - divine-laws; शचीपते (śacīpate) - O lord of Śacī; यत्र (yatra) - where; अभवः (abhavaḥ) - you-were; तत्र (tatra) - there; भवः (bhavaḥ) - you-are; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - know; सुराधिप (surādhipa) - O lord of the gods;]
(Not-to-be-transgressed are the divine-laws, O lord of Śacī. Where you were, there you are, that know, O lord of the gods. (13-5-20))
The divine laws are not to be transgressed, O lord of Śacī. Know that wherever you were, there you are, O lord of the gods. (13-5-20)
अस्मिन्नहं द्रुमे जातः साधुभिश्च गुणैर्युतः। बालभावे च सङ्गुप्तः शत्रुभिश्च न धर्षितः ॥१३-५-२१॥
asminnahaṃ drume jātaḥ sādhubhiśca guṇairyutaḥ। bālabhāve ca saṅguptaḥ śatrubhiśca na dharṣitaḥ॥13-5-21॥
[अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; द्रुमे (drume) - tree; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; साधुभिः (sādhubhiḥ) - by the virtuous; च (ca) - and; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with qualities; युतः (yutaḥ) - endowed; बालभावे (bālabhāve) - in childhood; च (ca) - and; सङ्गुप्तः (saṅguptaḥ) - protected; शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - by enemies; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; धर्षितः (dharṣitaḥ) - oppressed;]
(In this I tree born by the virtuous and with qualities endowed; in childhood and protected by enemies and not oppressed.)
I was born on this tree, endowed with virtues by the virtuous; in my childhood I was protected and not oppressed by enemies. (13-5-21)
किमनुक्रोशवैफल्यमुत्पादयसि मेऽनघ। आनृशंस्येऽनुरक्तस्य भक्तस्यानुगतस्य च ॥१३-५-२२॥
kim-anukrośa-vai-phalyam-utpādayasi me-'nagha। ānṛśaṁsye-'nuraktasya bhaktasya-anugatasya ca ॥13-5-22॥
[किम् (kim) - what; अनुक्रोश (anukrośa) - compassion; वै (vai) - indeed; फल्यम् (phalyam) - fruitlessness; उत्पादयसि (utpādayasi) - you produce; मे (me) - for me; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; आनृशंस्ये (ānṛśaṁsye) - in compassion; अनुरक्तस्य (anuraktasya) - of the devoted; भक्तस्य (bhaktasya) - of the faithful; अनुगतस्य (anugatasya) - of the follower; च (ca) - and;]
(What, indeed, fruitlessness of compassion do you produce for me, O sinless one? In compassion, of the devoted, of the faithful, of the follower, and.)
O sinless one, why do you cause me to feel that compassion is fruitless? Compassion is for the devoted, the faithful, and the follower. (13-5-22)
अनुक्रोशो हि साधूनां सुमहद्धर्मलक्षणम्। अनुक्रोशश्च साधूनां सदा प्रीतिं प्रयच्छति ॥१३-५-२३॥
anukrośo hi sādhūnāṃ sumahaddharmalakṣaṇam। anukrośaś ca sādhūnāṃ sadā prītiṃ prayacchati ॥13-5-23॥
[अनुक्रोशः (anukrośaḥ) - compassion; हि (hi) - indeed; साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the virtuous; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; धर्मलक्षणम् (dharmalakṣaṇam) - mark of dharma; अनुक्रोशः (anukrośaḥ) - compassion; च (ca) - and; साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the virtuous; सदा (sadā) - always; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - delight; प्रयच्छति (prayacchati) - bestows;]
(Compassion indeed of the virtuous very great mark of dharma; compassion and of the virtuous always delight bestows.)
Compassion is indeed the very great mark of dharma among the virtuous; and compassion always bestows delight upon the virtuous. (13-5-23)
त्वमेव दैवतैः सर्वैः पृच्छ्यसे धर्मसंशयान्। अतस्त्वं देव देवानामाधिपत्ये प्रतिष्ठितः ॥१३-५-२४॥
tvam eva daivataiḥ sarvaiḥ pṛcchyase dharmasaṁśayān। atas tvaṁ deva devānām ādhipatye pratiṣṭhitaḥ ॥13-5-24॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; दैवतैः (daivataiḥ) - by the deities; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; पृच्छ्यसे (pṛcchyase) - are asked; धर्मसंशयान् (dharmasaṁśayān) - doubts regarding dharma; अतः (atas) - therefore; त्वम् (tvam) - you; देव (deva) - O god; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; आधिपत्ये (ādhipatye) - in the lordship; प्रतिष्ठितः (pratiṣṭhitaḥ) - are established;]
(You indeed by the deities all are asked doubts regarding dharma; therefore you, O god, of the gods in the lordship are established; (13-5-24))
You alone are asked by all the deities about doubts concerning dharma; therefore, O god, you are established in the lordship over the gods. (13-5-24)
नार्हसि त्वं सहस्राक्ष त्याजयित्वेह भक्तितः। समर्थमुपजीव्येमं त्यजेयं कथमद्य वै ॥१३-५-२५॥
nārhasi tvaṃ sahasrākṣa tyājayitveha bhaktitaḥ। samartham upajīvyemaṃ tyajeyaṃ katham adya vai ॥13-5-25॥
[नार्हसि (nārhasi) - not worthy; not fit; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सहस्राक्ष (sahasrākṣa) - O thousand-eyed; त्याजयित्वा (tyājayitvā) - having caused to be abandoned; इह (iha) - here; भक्तितः (bhaktitaḥ) - out of devotion; समर्थम् (samartham) - capable; competent; उपजीव्य (upajīvy) - having depended upon; having lived by; इमम् (imam) - this; त्यजेयम् (tyajeyam) - I should abandon; कथम् (katham) - how; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Not worthy you O thousand-eyed, having caused to be abandoned here out of devotion; capable having depended upon this I should abandon, how today indeed.)
O thousand-eyed, you are not worthy to make me abandon this here out of devotion; how could I abandon today one who is capable and whom I have depended upon? (13-5-25)
तस्य वाक्येन सौम्येन हर्षितः पाकशासनः। शुकं प्रोवाच धर्मज्ञमानृशंस्येन तोषितः ॥१३-५-२६॥
tasya vākyena saumyena harṣitaḥ pākaśāsanaḥ। śukaṃ provāca dharmajñam ānṛśaṃsyena toṣitaḥ ॥13-5-26॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; वाक्येन (vākyena) - by the speech; सौम्येन (saumyena) - gentle; हर्षितः (harṣitaḥ) - gladdened; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra; शुकं (śukam) - to Śuka; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; धर्मज्ञम् (dharmajñam) - knower of dharma; आनृशंस्येन (ānṛśaṃsyena) - by compassion; तोषितः (toṣitaḥ) - pleased;]
(Of him by the gentle speech gladdened Indra; to Śuka spoke (he), the knower of dharma, by compassion pleased.)
Gladdened by his gentle words, Indra, pleased by compassion, spoke to Śuka, the knower of dharma. (13-5-26)
वरं वृणीष्वेति तदा स च वव्रे वरं शुकः। आनृशंस्यपरो नित्यं तस्य वृक्षस्य सम्भवम् ॥१३-५-२७॥
varaṃ vṛṇīṣveti tadā sa ca vavre varaṃ śukaḥ। ānṛśaṃsyaparo nityaṃ tasya vṛkṣasya sambhavam ॥13-5-27॥
[वरं (varaṃ) - boon; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; इति (iti) - thus; तदा (tadā) - then; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; शुकः (śukaḥ) - parrot; आनृशंस्यपरो (ānṛśaṃsyaparaḥ) - devoted to compassion; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; तस्य (tasya) - of that; वृक्षस्य (vṛkṣasya) - of the tree; सम्भवम् (sambhavam) - existence;]
(Boon choose thus then he and chose boon parrot; devoted to compassion always of that tree existence.)
Then, when told "Choose a boon," the parrot chose the boon of always having the existence of that tree, being ever devoted to compassion. (13-5-27)
विदित्वा च दृढां शक्रस्तां शुके शीलसम्पदम्। प्रीतः क्षिप्रमथो वृक्षममृतेनावसिक्तवान् ॥१३-५-२८॥
viditvā ca dṛḍhāṃ śakrastāṃ śuke śīlasampadam। prītaḥ kṣipramatho vṛkṣam amṛtenāvasiktavān ॥13-5-28॥
[विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; च (ca) - and; दृढां (dṛḍhāṃ) - firm; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; तां (tāṃ) - that; शुके (śuke) - in the parrot; शीलसम्पदम् (śīlasampadam) - virtue-wealth; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अथ (atha) - then; वृक्षम् (vṛkṣam) - tree; अमृतेन (amṛtena) - with nectar; आवसिक्तवान् (āvasiktavān) - sprinkled;]
(Having known and (the) firm virtue-wealth of that (parrot), Indra, pleased, then quickly sprinkled the tree with nectar.)
Having realized the steadfast virtue of that parrot, Indra, pleased, quickly sprinkled the tree with nectar. (13-5-28)
ततः फलानि पत्राणि शाखाश्चापि मनोरमाः। शुकस्य दृढभक्तित्वाच्छ्रीमत्त्वं चाप स द्रुमः ॥१३-५-२९॥
tataḥ phalāni patrāṇi śākhāś cāpi manoramāḥ। śukasya dṛḍhabhaktitvāc chrīmatvaṃ cāpa sa drumaḥ ॥13-5-29॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; पत्राणि (patrāṇi) - leaves; शाखाः (śākhāḥ) - branches; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मनोरमाः (manoramāḥ) - pleasing; delightful; शुकस्य (śukasya) - of the parrot; दृढभक्तित्वात् (dṛḍhabhaktitvāt) - due to firm devotion; श्रीमत्त्वं (śrīmatvam) - prosperity; wealth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; स (sa) - that; द्रुमः (drumaḥ) - tree;]
(Then fruits, leaves, and also pleasing branches; due to the parrot's firm devotion, prosperity also that tree.)
Then, that tree had fruits, leaves, and also beautiful branches; because of the parrot's firm devotion, the tree also attained prosperity. (13-5-29)
शुकश्च कर्मणा तेन आनृशंस्यकृतेन ह। आयुषोऽन्ते महाराज प्राप शक्रसलोकताम् ॥१३-५-३०॥
śukaś ca karmaṇā tena ānṛśaṁsyakṛtena ha। āyuṣo 'nte mahārāja prāpa śakrasalokatām ॥13-5-30॥
[शुकः (śukaḥ) - Śuka; (the sage Śuka;) च (ca) - and; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; तेन (tena) - by that; आनृशंस्यकृतेन (ānṛśaṁsyakṛtena) - by the act of compassion; ह (ha) - indeed; आयुषः (āyuṣaḥ) - of life; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; प्राप (prāpa) - attained; शक्रसलोकताम् (śakrasalokatām) - the world of Indra;]
(Śuka and by action by that by the act of compassion indeed at the end of life O great king attained the world of Indra.)
O great king, Śuka, by that compassionate act, indeed, at the end of his life, attained the world of Indra. (13-5-30)
एवमेव मनुष्येन्द्र भक्तिमन्तं समाश्रितः। सर्वार्थसिद्धिं लभते शुकं प्राप्य यथा द्रुमः ॥१३-५-३१॥
evameva manuṣyendra bhaktimantaṃ samāśritaḥ। sarvārthasiddhiṃ labhate śukaṃ prāpya yathā drumaḥ ॥13-5-31॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; भक्तिमन्तम् (bhaktimantam) - devoted; समाश्रितः (samāśritaḥ) - having taken refuge; सर्वार्थसिद्धिम् (sarvārthasiddhim) - all-object-attainment; लभते (labhate) - obtains; शुकम् (śukam) - parrot; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; यथा (yathā) - just as; द्रुमः (drumaḥ) - tree;]
(Thus indeed, O king of men, having taken refuge in the devoted, one obtains all-object-attainment, just as a tree, having obtained a parrot.)
In the same way, O king of men, one who takes refuge in a devoted person attains all success, just as a tree does when it gains a parrot. (13-5-31)
