स्त्रीपुंसयोः सम्प्रयोगे स्पर्शः कस्याधिको भवेत्। एतन्मे संशयं राजन्यथावद्वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१३-१२-१॥
strīpuṁsayoḥ samprayoge sparśaḥ kasyādhiko bhavet। etan me saṁśayaṁ rājan yathāvat vaktum arhasi ॥13-12-1॥

O king, in the union of woman and man, whose touch is greater? This is my doubt; you should properly tell me this. (13-12-1)

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। भङ्गाश्वनेन शक्रस्य यथा वैरमभूत्पुरा ॥१३-१२-२॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। bhaṅgāśvanena śakrasya yathā vairam abhūt purā ॥13-12-2॥

Once, there was a very righteous royal sage named Bhaṅgāśvana. Being sonless, that tiger among men performed a sacrifice for the sake of obtaining a son. (13-12-3)
अग्निष्टुं नाम राजर्षिरिन्द्रद्विष्टं महाबलः। प्रायश्चित्तेषु मर्त्यानां पुत्रकामस्य चेष्यते ॥१३-१२-४॥
agniṣṭuṃ nāma rājarṣir indrādviṣṭaṃ mahābalaḥ। prāyaścitteṣu martyānāṃ putrakāmasya ceṣyate ॥13-12-4॥

इन्द्रो ज्ञात्वा तु तं यज्ञं महाभागः सुरेश्वरः। अन्तरं तस्य राजर्षेरन्विच्छन्नियतात्मनः ॥१३-१२-५॥
indro jñātvā tu taṃ yajñaṃ mahābhāgaḥ sureśvaraḥ। antaraṃ tasya rājarṣer anvicchanniyatātmanaḥ ॥13-12-5॥

Indra, the greatly fortunate lord of the gods, having come to know of that sacrifice, sought out the secret of the self-controlled royal sage. (13-12-5)
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य मृगयामटतो नृप। इदमन्तरमित्येव शक्रो नृपममोहयत् ॥१३-१२-६॥
kasyacit tv atha kālasya mṛgayām aṭato nṛpa। idam antaram ity eva śakro nṛpam amohayat ॥13-12-6॥
[कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of someone; त् (t) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - in hunting; अटतः (aṭataḥ) - while roaming; नृप (nṛpa) - king; इदम् (idam) - this; अन्तरम् (antaram) - interval; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; नृपम् (nṛpam) - the king; अमोहयत् (amohayat) - bewildered;]
(Of someone, indeed, then, of time, in hunting, while roaming, king, this, interval, thus, indeed, Indra, the king, bewildered.)
Once, at a certain time, while a king was roaming in a hunt, Indra bewildered the king at just this interval. (13-12-6)
एकाश्वेन च राजर्षिर्भ्रान्त इन्द्रेण मोहितः। न दिशोऽविन्दत नृपः क्षुत्पिपासार्दितस्तदा ॥१३-१२-७॥
ekāśvena ca rājarṣirbhrānta indreṇa mohitaḥ। na diśo'vindata nṛpaḥ kṣutpipāsārditastadā ॥13-12-7॥

(With one horse and the royal sage, confused, by Indra, deluded, not the directions found, the king, afflicted by hunger and thirst, then.)
The royal sage, with only one horse, was confused and deluded by Indra. At that time, the king, afflicted by hunger and thirst, could not find his way. (13-12-7)
इतश्चेतश्च वै धावञ्श्रमतृष्णार्दितो नृपः। सरोऽपश्यत्सुरुचिरं पूर्णं परमवारिणा ॥ सोऽवगाह्य सरस्तात पाययामास वाजिनम् ॥१३-१२-८॥
itaś cetaś ca vai dhāvañ śrama-tṛṣṇā-ardito nṛpaḥ। saraḥ apaśyat suruciram pūrṇam parama-vāriṇā ॥ saḥ avagāhya saras-tāt pāyayām āsa vājinam ॥13-12-8॥
[इतश्च (itaś ca) - from here and there; and; एतश्च (etaś ca) - from there and there; and; वै (vai) - indeed; धावन् (dhāvan) - running; श्रम (śrama) - fatigue; तृष्णा (tṛṣṇā) - thirst; अर्दितः (arditaḥ) - afflicted; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सुरुचिरम् (suruciram) - very beautiful; पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - full; परमवारिणा (parama-vāriṇā) - with excellent water; सः (saḥ) - he; अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having entered; सरस्तात् (saras-tāt) - from the lake; पाययामास (pāyayām āsa) - caused to drink; वाजिनम् (vājinam) - the horse;]
(From here and there indeed running, afflicted by fatigue and thirst, the king saw a lake very beautiful, full with excellent water. He, having entered the lake, caused the horse to drink from the lake. (13-12-8))
Running here and there, the king, afflicted by fatigue and thirst, saw a very beautiful lake full of excellent water. Entering the lake, he let his horse drink from it. (13-12-8)
अथ पीतोदकं सोऽश्वं वृक्षे बद्ध्वा नृपोत्तमः। अवगाह्य ततः स्नातो राजा स्त्रीत्वमवाप ह ॥१३-१२-९॥
atha pītodakaṃ so'śvaṃ vṛkṣe baddhvā nṛpottamaḥ। avagāhya tataḥ snāto rājā strītvam avāpa ha ॥13-12-9॥
[अथ (atha) - then; पीतोदकं (pītodakam) - having drunk water; सः (saḥ) - he; अश्वं (aśvam) - horse; वृक्षे (vṛkṣe) - on the tree; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having tied; नृपोत्तमः (nṛpottamaḥ) - best of kings; अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having entered (water); ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्नातः (snātaḥ) - having bathed; राजा (rājā) - king; स्त्रीत्वम् (strītvam) - womanhood; अवाप (avāpa) - obtained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, having drunk water, he, the best of kings, having tied the horse to the tree, having entered (the water), then, having bathed, the king indeed obtained womanhood.)
Then, after drinking water and tying the horse to a tree, the best of kings entered the water, bathed, and the king indeed became a woman. (13-12-9)
आत्मानं स्त्रीकृतं दृष्ट्वा व्रीडितो नृपसत्तमः। चिन्तानुगतसर्वात्मा व्याकुलेन्द्रियचेतनः ॥१३-१२-१०॥
ātmānaṃ strīkṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā vrīḍito nṛpasattamaḥ। cintānugatasarvātmā vyākulendriyacetanaḥ ॥13-12-10॥
[आत्मानं (ātmānam) - self; (accusative); स्त्रीकृतं (strīkṛtam) - made into a woman; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; नृपसत्तमः (nṛpasattamaḥ) - the best of kings; चिन्तानुगतसर्वात्मा (cintānugatasarvātmā) - whose whole self was followed by thought; व्याकुलेन्द्रियचेतनः (vyākulendriyacetanaḥ) - whose senses and mind were disturbed;]
(Having seen himself made into a woman, the best of kings, ashamed, whose whole self was followed by thought, whose senses and mind were disturbed.)
Seeing himself transformed into a woman, the noble king became ashamed; his entire being was overcome by anxiety, and his senses and mind were agitated. (13-12-10)
आरोहिष्ये कथं त्वश्वं कथं यास्यामि वै पुरम्। अग्निष्टुं नाम इष्टं मे पुत्राणां शतमौरसम् ॥१३-१२-११॥
ārohiṣye kathaṁ tvaśvaṁ kathaṁ yāsyāmi vai puram। agniṣṭuṁ nāma iṣṭaṁ me putrāṇāṁ śatamaurasam ॥13-12-11॥
[आरोहिष्ये (ārohiṣye) - I shall mount; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; त्व (tva) - your; अश्वं (aśvaṁ) - horse; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - shall I go; वै (vai) - indeed; पुरम् (puram) - city; अग्निष्टुं (agniṣṭuṁ) - to perform Agniṣṭu; नाम (nāma) - named; इष्टं (iṣṭaṁ) - desired; मे (me) - my; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṁ) - of sons; शतमौरसम् (śatamaurasam) - hundred of own lineage;]
(I shall mount how your horse, how shall I go indeed to the city? To perform Agniṣṭu named desired by me, a hundred of my own lineage sons.)
How shall I mount your horse? How indeed shall I go to the city? To perform the Agniṣṭu sacrifice, named and desired by me, with a hundred sons of my own lineage. (13-12-11)
जातं महाबलानां वै तान्प्रवक्ष्यामि किं त्वहम्। दारेषु चास्मदीयेषु पौरजानपदेषु च ॥१३-१२-१२॥
jātaṃ mahābalānāṃ vai tān pravakṣyāmi kiṃ tv aham। dāreṣu ca asmadīyeṣu paurajānapadeṣu ca ॥13-12-12॥
[जातं (jātaṃ) - born; arisen; महाबलानां (mahābalānāṃ) - of the mighty; of those with great strength; वै (vai) - indeed; truly; तान् (tān) - them; those; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; I will tell; किं (kiṃ) - what; why; त्व (tv) - but; however; अहम् (aham) - I; दारेषु (dāreṣu) - among wives; in wives; च (ca) - and; अस्मदीयेषु (asmadīyeṣu) - among my own; in mine; पौरजानपदेषु (paurajānapadeṣu) - among citizens and countrymen; in townsmen and villagers; च (ca) - and;]
(Born of the mighty indeed, those I shall declare; what but I; among wives and among my own, among citizens and countrymen and.)
I shall indeed declare those born of the mighty; but why should I speak about my own wives and among my people, among citizens and countrymen? (13-12-12)
मृदुत्वं च तनुत्वं च विक्लवत्वं तथैव च। स्त्रीगुणा ऋषिभिः प्रोक्ता धर्मतत्त्वार्थदर्शिभिः ॥ व्यायामः कर्कशत्वं च वीर्यं च पुरुषे गुणाः ॥१३-१२-१३॥
mṛdutvaṃ ca tanutvaṃ ca viklavatvaṃ tathaiva ca। strīguṇā ṛṣibhiḥ proktā dharmatattvārthadarśibhiḥ॥ vyāyāmaḥ karkaśatvaṃ ca vīryaṃ ca puruṣe guṇāḥ॥13-12-13॥
[मृदुत्वं (mṛdutvaṃ) - softness; च (ca) - and; तनुत्वं (tanutvaṃ) - slenderness; च (ca) - and; विक्लवत्वं (viklavatvaṃ) - timidity; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; स्त्रीगुणा (strīguṇā) - qualities of women; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by sages; प्रोक्ता (proktā) - declared; धर्मतत्त्वार्थदर्शिभिः (dharmatattvārthadarśibhiḥ) - by those who see the essence and meaning of dharma; व्यायामः (vyāyāmaḥ) - exertion; कर्कशत्वं (karkaśatvaṃ) - harshness; च (ca) - and; वीर्यं (vīryaṃ) - strength; च (ca) - and; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in a man; गुणाः (guṇāḥ) - qualities;]
(Softness and slenderness and timidity likewise and; qualities of women by sages declared by those who see the essence and meaning of dharma; exertion, harshness and strength and in a man qualities.)
Softness, slenderness, and timidity are, likewise, declared by sages who understand the essence of dharma as qualities of women; exertion, harshness, and strength are qualities in a man. (13-12-13)
पौरुषं विप्रनष्टं मे स्त्रीत्वं केनापि मेऽभवत्। स्त्रीभावात्कथमश्वं तु पुनरारोढुमुत्सहे ॥१३-१२-१४॥
pauruṣaṃ vipranaṣṭaṃ me strītvaṃ kenāpi me'bhavat. strībhāvātkatham aśvaṃ tu punar āroḍhum utsahe ॥13-12-14॥
[पौरुषं (pauruṣam) - manliness; विप्रनष्टं (vipranaṣṭam) - completely lost; मे (me) - my; स्त्रीत्वं (strītvam) - womanhood; केनापि (kenāpi) - by someone; मे (me) - to me; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; स्त्रीभावात् (strībhāvāt) - from the state of being a woman; कथम् (katham) - how; अश्वं (aśvam) - horse; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punar) - again; आरोढुम् (āroḍhum) - to mount; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able;]
(Manliness completely lost my; womanhood by someone to me became. From the state of being a woman how horse but again to mount am able (13-12-14))
My manliness has been completely lost; womanhood has somehow come to me. How, being in the state of a woman, am I able to mount a horse again? (13-12-14)
महता त्वथ खेदेन आरुह्याश्वं नराधिपः। पुनरायात्पुरं तात स्त्रीभूतो नृपसत्तम ॥१३-१२-१५॥
mahatā tvatha khedena āruhyāśvaṃ narādhipaḥ। punarāyātpuraṃ tāta strībhūto nṛpasattama ॥13-12-15॥
[महता (mahatā) - by great; त्वथ (tvatha) - then; खेदेन (khedena) - by fatigue; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having mounted; अश्वं (aśvaṃ) - horse; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; पुनर् (punar) - again; आयात् (āyāt) - having come; पुरं (puraṃ) - city; तात (tāta) - O dear; स्त्रीभूतः (strībhūtaḥ) - having become a woman; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - best of kings;]
(By great then by fatigue having mounted horse king again having come city O dear having become a woman best of kings.)
O dear, the best of kings, then, greatly fatigued, mounted his horse and, having become a woman, returned again to the city. (13-12-15)
पुत्रा दाराश्च भृत्याश्च पौरजानपदाश्च ते। किं न्विदं त्विति विज्ञाय विस्मयं परमं गताः ॥१३-१२-१६॥
putrā dārāś ca bhṛtyāś ca paurajānapadāś ca te। kiṃ nvidaṃ tv iti vijñāya vismayaṃ paramaṃ gatāḥ ॥13-12-16॥
[पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; दाराः (dārāḥ) - wives; च (ca) - and; भृत्याः (bhṛtyāḥ) - servants; च (ca) - and; पौरजानपदाः (paurajānapadāḥ) - citizens and country people; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; त्व (tv) - you; इति (iti) - thus; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having understood; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; गताः (gatāḥ) - attained;]
(Sons, wives, and servants, and citizens and country people, they, what indeed is this, you, thus, having understood, supreme astonishment attained.)
Sons, wives, servants, and the citizens and country people, upon realizing "What indeed is this, you?", attained supreme astonishment. (13-12-16)
अथोवाच स राजर्षिः स्त्रीभूतो वदतां वरः। मृगयामस्मि निर्यातो बलैः परिवृतो दृढम् ॥ उद्भ्रान्तः प्राविशं घोरामटवीं दैवमोहितः ॥१३-१२-१७॥
athovāca sa rājarṣiḥ strībhūto vadatāṃ varaḥ। mṛgayāmasmi niryāto balaiḥ parivṛto dṛḍham ॥ udbhāntaḥ prāviśaṃ ghorāmaṭavīṃ daivamohitaḥ ॥13-12-17॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; स (sa) - he; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; स्त्रीभूतः (strībhūtaḥ) - having become a woman; वदतां (vadatām) - of speakers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - for hunting; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; निर्यातः (niryātaḥ) - having set out; बलैः (balaiḥ) - with troops; परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firmly; उद्भ्रान्तः (udbhrāntaḥ) - confused; प्राविशम् (prāviśam) - I entered; घोराम् (ghorām) - terrible; अटवीं (aṭavīṃ) - forest; दैवमोहितः (daivamohitaḥ) - deluded by fate;]
(Then said he, the royal sage, having become a woman, the best of speakers: For hunting I am set out, surrounded firmly by troops. Confused, I entered the terrible forest, deluded by fate.)
Then the royal sage, having become a woman and being the best among speakers, said: "I set out for hunting, firmly surrounded by troops. Confused and deluded by fate, I entered the dreadful forest." (13-12-17)
अटव्यां च सुघोरायां तृष्णार्तो नष्टचेतनः। सरः सुरुचिरप्रख्यमपश्यं पक्षिभिर्वृतम् ॥१३-१२-१८॥
aṭavyāṃ ca sughorāyāṃ tṛṣṇārto naṣṭacetanaḥ। saraḥ suruciraprakhyam apaśyaṃ pakṣibhir vṛtam ॥13-12-18॥
[अटव्यां (aṭavyām) - in the forest; च (ca) - and; सुघोरायां (sughorāyām) - very terrible; तृष्णार्तः (tṛṣṇārtaḥ) - afflicted by thirst; नष्टचेतनः (naṣṭacetanaḥ) - having lost consciousness; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; सुरुचिरप्रख्यम् (suruciraprakhyam) - very beautiful in appearance; अपश्यं (apaśyaṃ) - I saw; पक्षिभिः (pakṣibhiḥ) - by birds; वृतम् (vṛtam) - covered;]
(In the forest and in a very terrible (place), afflicted by thirst, having lost consciousness, a lake very beautiful in appearance, covered by birds, I saw.)
In that dreadful forest, tormented by thirst and having lost consciousness, I saw a lake of striking beauty, covered with birds. (13-12-18)
तत्रावगाढः स्त्रीभूतो व्यक्तं दैवान्न संशयः। अतृप्त इव पुत्राणां दाराणां च धनस्य च ॥१३-१२-१९॥
tatrāvagāḍhaḥ strībhūto vyaktaṃ daivānna saṃśayaḥ। atṛpta iva putrāṇāṃ dārāṇāṃ ca dhanasya ca ॥13-12-19॥

(There, immersed, having become a woman, manifestly by fate, doubt; unsatisfied like of sons, of wives and of wealth and.)
There, having become a woman and deeply immersed, it is clear by fate, there is no doubt; unsatisfied as if with sons, wives, and wealth. (13-12-19)
उवाच पुत्रांश्च ततः स्त्रीभूतः पार्थिवोत्तमः। सम्प्रीत्या भुज्यतां राज्यं वनं यास्यामि पुत्रकाः ॥ अभिषिच्य स पुत्राणां शतं राजा वनं गतः ॥१३-१२-२०॥

(Said sons and then having become a woman the best among kings; with affection may be enjoyed the kingdom, to the forest I shall go, O sons; having consecrated the hundred of sons, the king went to the forest; (13-12-20))
Then, the best among kings, having become a woman, said to his sons: "With affection, enjoy the kingdom; I shall go to the forest, O sons." Having consecrated his hundred sons, the king went to the forest. (13-12-20)
तामाश्रमे स्त्रियं तात तापसोऽभ्यवपद्यत। तापसेनास्य पुत्राणामाश्रमेऽप्यभवच्छतम् ॥१३-१२-२१॥
tām āśrame striyaṃ tāta tāpaso'bhyavapadyata। tāpasenāsya putrāṇām āśrame'py abhavac chatam ॥13-12-21॥

(Her in the hermitage, the woman, O dear, the ascetic accepted. By the ascetic, his sons, in the hermitage also, there was a hundred.)

अथ सा तान्सुतान्गृह्य पूर्वपुत्रानभाषत। पुरुषत्वे सुता यूयं स्त्रीत्वे चेमे शतं सुताः ॥१३-१२-२२॥
atha sā tān sutān gṛhya pūrvaputrān abhāṣata। puruṣatve sutā yūyaṃ strītve ca ime śataṃ sutāḥ ॥13-12-22॥

(Then she, having taken those sons, the former sons, spoke. In manhood, you are sons; in womanhood, these are a hundred sons.)
Then she took those former sons and said: "In manhood, you are the sons; in womanhood, these are a hundred sons." (13-12-22)
एकत्र भुज्यतां राज्यं भ्रातृभावेन पुत्रकाः। सहिता भ्रातरस्तेऽथ राज्यं बुभुजिरे तदा ॥१३-१२-२३॥
ekatra bhujyatāṃ rājyaṃ bhrātṛ-bhāvena putrakāḥ। sahitā bhrātaraḥ te atha rājyaṃ bubhujire tadā ॥13-12-23॥
[एकत्र (ekatra) - in one place; भुज्यताम् (bhujyatām) - let it be enjoyed; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; भ्रातृभावेन (bhrātṛ-bhāvena) - with brotherly feeling; पुत्रकाः (putrakāḥ) - sons; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - united; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; ते (te) - they; अथ (atha) - then; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; बुभुजिरे (bubhujire) - enjoyed; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(In one place let the kingdom be enjoyed with brotherly feeling, O sons. United, the brothers then enjoyed the kingdom at that time.)
"Let the kingdom be enjoyed together in a spirit of brotherhood, sons." Thus, united, the brothers then ruled the kingdom together. (13-12-23)
तान्दृष्ट्वा भ्रातृभावेन भुञ्जानान्राज्यमुत्तमम्। चिन्तयामास देवेन्द्रो मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥ उपकारोऽस्य राजर्षेः कृतो नापकृतं मया ॥१३-१२-२४॥
tāndṛṣṭvā bhrātṛbhāvena bhuñjānān rājyam uttamam। cintayāmāsa devendro manyunā abhipariplutaḥ ॥ upakāro'sya rājarṣeḥ kṛto na apakṛtaṃ mayā ॥13-12-24॥

(Having seen them enjoying the excellent kingdom with brotherly feeling, Indra, overwhelmed by anger, thought: "A benefit has been done to this royal sage, not harm, by me." (13-12-24))
Seeing them enjoying the excellent kingdom in brotherly harmony, Indra, filled with anger, thought: "I have done a favor to this royal sage, not any harm." (13-12-24)
ततो ब्राह्मणरूपेण देवराजः शतक्रतुः। भेदयामास तान्गत्वा नगरं वै नृपात्मजान् ॥१३-१२-२५॥
tato brāhmaṇarūpeṇa devarājaḥ śatakratuḥ। bhedayāmāsa tān gatvā nagaraṃ vai nṛpātmajān ॥13-12-25॥

(Then, in the form of a brāhmaṇa, the king of the gods, Indra, caused them to be divided, having gone to the city, indeed, the sons of the king.)
Then Indra, the king of the gods, having assumed the form of a brāhmaṇa, went to the city and caused the sons of the king to be divided. (13-12-25)
भ्रातॄणां नास्ति सौभ्रात्रं येऽप्येकस्य पितुः सुताः। राज्यहेतोर्विवदिताः कश्यपस्य सुरासुराः ॥१३-१२-२६॥
bhrātṝṇāṃ nāsti saubhrātraṃ ye'pyekasya pituḥ sutāḥ। rājyahetorvivaditāḥ kaśyapasya surāsurāḥ ॥13-12-26॥

(Of brothers there is not brotherhood; who even of one father sons; for the sake of kingdom quarrelled; of Kaśyapa devas and asuras;)
There is no brotherhood among brothers; even the sons of one father, Kaśyapa, the devas and asuras, quarrelled for the sake of the kingdom. (13-12-26)
यूयं भङ्गाश्वनापत्यास्तापसस्येतरे सुताः। कश्यपस्य सुराश्चैव असुराश्च सुतास्तथा ॥ युष्माकं पैतृकं राज्यं भुज्यते तापसात्मजैः ॥१३-१२-२७॥
yūyaṃ bhaṅgāśvanāpatyās tāpasasy itare sutāḥ। kaśyapasya surāś caiva asurāś ca sutās tathā॥ yuṣmākaṃ paitṛkaṃ rājyaṃ bhujyate tāpasātmajaiḥ॥13-12-27॥
[यूयम् (yūyam) - you all; भङ्गाश्वनापत्याः (bhaṅgāśvanāpatyāḥ) - descendants of Bhaṅgāśva; तापसस्य (tāpasasya) - of the ascetic; इतरे (itare) - other; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; कश्यपस्य (kaśyapasya) - of Kaśyapa; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; असुराः (asurāḥ) - demons; च (ca) - and; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तथा (tathā) - likewise; युष्माकम् (yuṣmākam) - your; पैतृकम् (paitṛkam) - ancestral; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; भुज्यते (bhujyate) - is enjoyed; तापसात्मजैः (tāpasātmajaiḥ) - by the sons of the ascetic;]
(You all, descendants of Bhaṅgāśva, other sons of the ascetic; of Kaśyapa, the gods and indeed the demons, likewise sons; your ancestral kingdom is enjoyed by the sons of the ascetic.)
You, the descendants of Bhaṅgāśva, and the other sons of the ascetic, as well as the gods and demons who are also sons of Kaśyapa, your ancestral kingdom is being ruled by the sons of the ascetic. (13-12-27)
इन्द्रेण भेदितास्ते तु युद्धेऽन्योन्यमपातयन्। तच्छ्रुत्वा तापसी चापि सन्तप्ता प्ररुरोद ह ॥१३-१२-२८॥
indreṇa bheditās te tu yuddhe'nyonyam apātayan। tac chrutvā tāpasī cāpi santaptā praruroda ha ॥13-12-28॥
[इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; भेदिताः (bheditāḥ) - having been divided; ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - each other; अपातयन् (apātayan) - caused to fall; तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तापसी (tāpasī) - the ascetic woman; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सन्तप्ता (santaptā) - distressed; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - wept; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(By Indra having been divided, they but in battle each other caused to fall. That having heard, the ascetic woman and also distressed wept indeed. (13-12-28))
But, having been divided by Indra, they caused each other to fall in battle. Hearing that, the ascetic woman, also distressed, indeed wept. (13-12-28)
ब्राह्मणच्छद्मनाभ्येत्य तामिन्द्रोऽथान्वपृच्छत। केन दुःखेन सन्तप्ता रोदिषि त्वं वरानने ॥१३-१२-२९॥
brāhmaṇacchadmanābhyetya tām indro 'thānvapṛcchata। kena duḥkhena santaptā rodiṣi tvaṃ varānane ॥13-12-29॥
[ब्राह्मणच्छद्मना (brāhmaṇacchadmanā) - with the disguise of a brāhmaṇa; अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; ताम् (tām) - her; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अथ (atha) - then; अन्वपृच्छत् (anvapṛcchat) - asked; केन (kena) - by what; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by suffering; सन्तप्ता (santaptā) - afflicted; रोदिषि (rodiṣi) - do you weep; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वरानने (varānane) - O beautiful-faced one;]
(With the disguise of a brāhmaṇa, having approached her, Indra then asked: By what suffering, afflicted, do you weep, you, O beautiful-faced one?)
Indra, having approached her in the disguise of a brāhmaṇa, then asked, "O beautiful-faced one, by what suffering are you afflicted and why do you weep?" (13-12-29)
ब्राह्मणं तु ततो दृष्ट्वा सा स्त्री करुणमब्रवीत्। पुत्राणां द्वे शते ब्रह्मन्कालेन विनिपातिते ॥१३-१२-३०॥
brāhmaṇaṃ tu tato dṛṣṭvā sā strī karuṇam abravīt। putrāṇāṃ dve śate brahman kālena vinipātite ॥13-12-30॥
[ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सा (sā) - she; स्त्री (strī) - woman; करुणम् (karuṇam) - pitifully; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of sons; द्वे (dve) - two; शते (śate) - hundreds; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brāhmaṇa; कालेन (kālena) - by time; विनिपातिते (vinipātite) - destroyed;]
(But then, having seen the Brāhmaṇa, she, the woman, pitifully said: O Brāhmaṇa, two hundreds of sons have been destroyed by time.)
But when she saw the Brāhmaṇa, the woman spoke pitifully: "O Brāhmaṇa, two hundred of my sons have been destroyed by time." (13-12-30)
अहं राजाभवं विप्र तत्र पुत्रशतं मया। समुत्पन्नं सुरूपाणां विक्रान्तानां द्विजोत्तम ॥१३-१२-३१॥
ahaṃ rājābhavaṃ vipra tatra putraśataṃ mayā। samutpannaṃ surūpāṇāṃ vikrāntānāṃ dvijottama ॥13-12-31॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; राजा (rājā) - king; अभवं (abhavaṃ) - became; विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; तत्र (tatra) - there; पुत्रशतं (putraśatam) - hundred sons; मया (mayā) - by me; समुत्पन्नं (samutpannam) - born; सुरूपाणां (surūpāṇām) - of handsome; विक्रान्तानां (vikrāntānām) - of valiant; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - O best of twice-born;]
(I king became O brāhmaṇa there hundred sons by me born of handsome of valiant O best of twice-born.)
O best of twice-born, O brāhmaṇa, I became a king there; by me, a hundred sons were born, all handsome and valiant. (13-12-31)
कदाचिन्मृगयां यात उद्भ्रान्तो गहने वने। अवगाढश्च सरसि स्त्रीभूतो ब्राह्मणोत्तम ॥ पुत्रान्राज्ये प्रतिष्ठाप्य वनमस्मि ततो गतः ॥१३-१२-३२॥
kadācin mṛgayāṃ yāta udbhānto gahane vane। avagāḍhaś ca sarasi strībhūto brāhmaṇottama॥ putrān rājye pratiṣṭhāpya vanam asmi tato gataḥ॥13-12-32॥
[कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - hunting; यात (yāta) - having gone; उद्भ्रान्तः (udbhrāntaḥ) - having wandered; गहने (gahane) - dense; वने (vane) - in the forest; अवगाढः (avagāḍhaḥ) - having entered; च (ca) - and; सरसि (sarasi) - in the lake; स्त्रीभूतः (strībhūtaḥ) - having become a woman; ब्राह्मणोत्तम (brāhmaṇottama) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; राज्ये (rājye) - in the kingdom; प्रतिष्ठाप्य (pratiṣṭhāpya) - having established; वनम् (vanam) - forest; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; ततः (tataḥ) - then; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(At some time, having gone hunting, having wandered in the dense forest, and having entered the lake, having become a woman, O best of Brāhmaṇas. Having established my sons in the kingdom, I then went to the forest. (13-12-32))
Once, while hunting, I wandered into a dense forest and, entering a lake, became a woman, O best of Brāhmaṇas. After establishing my sons in the kingdom, I then went to the forest. (13-12-32)
स्त्रियाश्च मे पुत्रशतं तापसेन महात्मना। आश्रमे जनितं ब्रह्मन्नीतास्ते नगरं मया ॥१३-१२-३३॥
striyāś ca me putraśataṃ tāpasena mahātmanā। āśrame janitaṃ brahman nītās te nagaraṃ mayā ॥13-12-33॥
[स्त्रियाः (striyāḥ) - of the women; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - hundred sons; तापसेन (tāpasena) - by the ascetic; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; जनितम् (janitam) - born; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; नीताः (nītāḥ) - led; ते (te) - they; नगरम् (nagaram) - to the city; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(And of the women, my hundred sons, by the ascetic, by the great-souled, in the hermitage born, O Brahman, led they to the city by me.)
O Brahman, my hundred sons born of the women by the great-souled ascetic in the hermitage were led by me to the city. (13-12-33)
तेषां च वैरमुत्पन्नं कालयोगेन वै द्विज। एतच्छोचामि विप्रेन्द्र दैवेनाभिपरिप्लुता ॥१३-१२-३४॥
teṣāṃ ca vairam utpannaṃ kālayogena vai dvija। etac chocāmi viprendra daivenābhipariplutā ॥13-12-34॥

(Of them and enmity arisen by the conjunction of time indeed, O twice-born. This I grieve, O best of Brāhmaṇas, completely overwhelmed by fate. (13-12-34))

इन्द्रस्तां दुःखितां दृष्ट्वा अब्रवीत्परुषं वचः। पुरा सुदुःसहं भद्रे मम दुःखं त्वया कृतम् ॥१३-१२-३५॥
indras tāṃ duḥkhitāṃ dṛṣṭvā abravīt paruṣaṃ vacaḥ। purā suduḥsahaṃ bhadre mama duḥkhaṃ tvayā kṛtam ॥13-12-35॥

(Indra her afflicted with sorrow having seen said harsh words. Formerly very unbearable O auspicious one my sorrow by you done.)
Indra, seeing her afflicted with sorrow, spoke harsh words: "Formerly, O auspicious one, you caused me very unbearable sorrow." (13-12-35)
इन्द्रद्विष्टेन यजता मामनादृत्य दुर्मते। इन्द्रोऽहमस्मि दुर्बुद्धे वैरं ते यातितं मया ॥१३-१२-३६॥
indradviṣṭena yajatā māmanādṛtya durmate। indro'hamasmi durbuddhe vairaṃ te yātitaṃ mayā ॥13-12-36॥

(By one hated by Indra, by the sacrificer, disregarding me, O evil-minded one; Indra am I, O one of wicked understanding, your enmity has been destroyed by me.)
By you, who are hated by Indra and perform sacrifices disregarding me, O evil-minded one, know that I am Indra. O one of wicked understanding, your enmity has been destroyed by me. (13-12-36)
इन्द्रं तु दृष्ट्वा राजर्षिः पादयोः शिरसा गतः। प्रसीद त्रिदशश्रेष्ठ पुत्रकामेन स क्रतुः ॥ इष्टस्त्रिदशशार्दूल तत्र मे क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥१३-१२-३७॥
indraṃ tu dṛṣṭvā rājarṣiḥ pādayoḥ śirasā gataḥ। prasīda tridaśaśreṣṭha putrakāmena sa kratuḥ ॥ iṣṭastridaśaśārdūla tatra me kṣantumarhasi ॥13-12-37॥
[इन्द्रं (indraṃ) - Indra (accusative); तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at the feet; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; गतः (gataḥ) - went; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be gracious; त्रिदशश्रेष्ठ (tridaśaśreṣṭha) - O best of the gods; पुत्रकामेन (putrakāmena) - with desire for a son; स (sa) - he; क्रतुः (kratuḥ) - sacrifice; इष्ट (iṣṭa) - performed; त्रिदशशार्दूल (tridaśaśārdūla) - O tiger among the gods; तत्र (tatra) - there; मे (me) - my; क्षन्तुमर्हसि (kṣantumarhasi) - you ought to forgive;]
(But having seen Indra, the royal sage went with his head at the feet. Be gracious, O best of the gods, with desire for a son, he performed the sacrifice. O tiger among the gods, there you ought to forgive my (fault). (13-12-37))
But when the royal sage saw Indra, he bowed his head at Indra's feet. "Be gracious, O best of the gods! With the desire for a son, he performed the sacrifice. O tiger among the gods, you ought to forgive me for that there." (13-12-37)
प्रणिपातेन तस्येन्द्रः परितुष्टो वरं ददौ। पुत्रा वै कतमे राजञ्जीवन्तु तव शंस मे ॥ स्त्रीभूतस्य हि ये जाताः पुरुषस्याथ येऽभवन् ॥१३-१२-३८॥
praṇipātena tasyendraḥ parituṣṭo varaṃ dadau। putrā vai katame rājanjīvantu tava śaṃsa me ॥ strībhūtasya hi ye jātāḥ puruṣasyātha ye'bhavan ॥13-12-38॥
[प्रणिपातेन (praṇipātena) - by prostration; तस्य (tasya) - of him; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; परितुष्टः (parituṣṭaḥ) - was pleased; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; ददौ (dadau) - gave; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; वै (vai) - indeed; कतमे (katame) - which ones; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जीवन्तु (jīvantu) - may live; तव (tava) - your; शंस (śaṃsa) - tell; मे (me) - to me; स्त्रीभूतस्य (strībhūtasya) - of one who became a woman; हि (hi) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; जाताः (jātāḥ) - were born; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; अथ (atha) - and; ये (ye) - who; अभवन् (abhavan) - became;]
(By prostration, Indra of him was pleased, boon gave. Sons indeed which ones, O king, may live, your tell to me. Of one who became a woman indeed who were born, of a man and who became.)
By his prostration, Indra was pleased and granted a boon. O king, tell me, which of your sons should live? Of those born when you were a woman, and those born when you were a man, which ones? (13-12-38)
तापसी तु ततः शक्रमुवाच प्रयताञ्जलिः। स्त्रीभूतस्य हि ये जातास्ते मे जीवन्तु वासव ॥१३-१२-३९॥
tāpasī tu tataḥ śakram uvāca prayatāñjaliḥ। strībhūtasya hi ye jātās te me jīvantu vāsava ॥13-12-39॥
[तापसी (tāpasī) - female ascetic; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; उवाच (uvāca) - said; प्रयताञ्जलिः (prayatāñjaliḥ) - with joined hands; स्त्रीभूतस्य (strībhūtasya) - of the one who became a woman; हि (hi) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; जाताः (jātāḥ) - were born; ते (te) - they; मे (me) - my; जीवन्तु (jīvantu) - may live; वासव (vāsava) - O Indra;]
(The female ascetic but then said to Indra with joined hands: Of the one who became a woman, indeed, those who were born, may they live, O Indra.)
But the female ascetic then, with joined hands, said to Indra: "O Indra, may those who were born from the one who became a woman indeed live." (13-12-39)
इन्द्रस्तु विस्मितो हृष्टः स्त्रियं पप्रच्छ तां पुनः। पुरुषोत्पादिता ये ते कथं द्वेष्याः सुतास्तव ॥१३-१२-४०॥
indras tu vismito hṛṣṭaḥ striyaṃ papraccha tāṃ punaḥ। puruṣotpāditā ye te kathaṃ dveṣyāḥ sutās tava ॥13-12-40॥
[इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; तु (tu) - but; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - the woman; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; ताम् (tām) - her; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुरुषोत्पादिताः (puruṣotpāditāḥ) - born of men; ये (ye) - who; ते (te) - they; कथम् (katham) - how; द्वेष्याः (dveṣyāḥ) - hateful; सुताः (sutāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your;]
(Indra but astonished delighted the woman asked her again. Born of men who they how hateful sons your.)
But Indra, astonished and delighted, again asked the woman: "How are those sons of yours, who are born of men, hateful?" (13-12-40)
स्त्रीभूतस्य हि ये जाताः स्नेहस्तेभ्योऽधिकः कथम्। कारणं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तन्मे वक्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१३-१२-४१॥
strībhūtasya hi ye jātāḥ snehastebhyo'dhikaḥ katham। kāraṇaṃ śrotumicchāmi tanme vaktumihārhasi ॥13-12-41॥
[स्त्रीभूतस्य (strībhūtasya) - of one who has become a woman; हि (hi) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; जाताः (jātāḥ) - born; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - towards them; अधिकः (adhikaḥ) - greater; कथम् (katham) - how; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you are worthy;]
(Of one who has become a woman indeed who are born, affection towards them is greater, how? The reason to hear I wish, that to me to speak here you are worthy.)
For those who are born as women, why is the affection towards them greater? I wish to hear the reason for this; please tell me that here. (13-12-41)
स्त्र्युवाच॥

The woman said.
स्त्रियास्त्वभ्यधिकः स्नेहो न तथा पुरुषस्य वै। तस्मात्ते शक्र जीवन्तु ये जाताः स्त्रीकृतस्य वै ॥१३-१२-४२॥
striyāstvabhyadhikaḥ sneho na tathā puruṣasya vai। tasmātte śakra jīvantu ye jātāḥ strīkṛtasya vai॥13-12-42॥
[स्त्रियाः (striyāḥ) - of women; तु (tu) - but; अभ्यधिकः (abhyadhikaḥ) - excessive; more than; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; love; न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - they; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; जीवन्तु (jīvantu) - may live; ये (ye) - who; जाताः (jātāḥ) - are born; स्त्रीकृतस्य (strīkṛtasya) - of one made by a woman; of woman-made; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Of women but excessive affection not so of a man indeed; therefore they O Śakra may live who are born of woman-made indeed;)
But, O Śakra, the affection of women is greater, not so of men indeed; therefore, may those who are born of women live. (13-12-42)
भीष्म उवाच॥
bhīṣma uvāca॥
[भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Bhishma said.
एवमुक्ते ततस्त्विन्द्रः प्रीतो वाक्यमुवाच ह। सर्व एवेह जीवन्तु पुत्रास्ते सत्यवादिनि ॥१३-१२-४३॥
evam-ukte tatas tv indraḥ prīto vākyam uvāca ha। sarva eva iha jīvantu putrās te satyavādini ॥13-12-43॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; इह (iha) - here; जीवन्तु (jīvantu) - may live; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; ते (te) - your; सत्यवादिनि (satyavādini) - O truth-speaker;]
(Thus having been said, then you, Indra, pleased, indeed spoke speech. All indeed here may live, your sons, O truth-speaker. (13-12-43))
When this was said, then Indra, being pleased, spoke these words: "O truth-speaker, may all your sons live here." (13-12-43)
वरं च वृणु राजेन्द्र यं त्वमिच्छसि सुव्रत। पुरुषत्वमथ स्त्रीत्वं मत्तो यदभिकाङ्क्षसि ॥१३-१२-४४॥
varaṃ ca vṛṇu rājendra yaṃ tvam icchasi suvrata। puruṣatvam atha strītvam matto yad abhikāṅkṣasi ॥13-12-44॥
[वरम् (varam) - boon; च (ca) - and; वृणु (vṛṇu) - choose; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; यम् (yam) - which; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इच्छसि (icchasi) - desire; सुव्रत (suvrata) - O virtuous one; पुरुषत्वम् (puruṣatvam) - manhood; अथ (atha) - or; स्त्रीत्वम् (strītvam) - womanhood; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; यत् (yat) - which; अभिकाङ्क्षसि (abhikāṅkṣasi) - you desire;]
(Boon and choose O king which you desire O virtuous one; manhood or womanhood from me which you desire.)
O king, choose a boon as you wish, O virtuous one; whether you desire manhood or womanhood from me, whatever you wish. (13-12-44)
स्त्र्युवाच॥

The woman said.
स्त्रीत्वमेव वृणे शक्र प्रसन्ने त्वयि वासव। एवमुक्तस्तु देवेन्द्रस्तां स्त्रियं प्रत्युवाच ह। पुरुषत्वं कथं त्यक्त्वा स्त्रीत्वं रोचयसे विभो ॥१३-१२-४६॥
strītvameva vṛṇe śakra prasanne tvayi vāsava। evamuktastu devendrastāṃ striyaṃ pratyuvāca ha। puruṣatvaṃ kathaṃ tyaktvā strītvaṃ rocayase vibho ॥13-12-46॥
[स्त्रीत्वम् (strītvam) - womanhood; एव (eva) - indeed; वृणे (vṛṇe) - I choose; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; प्रसन्ने (prasanne) - when pleased; त्वयि (tvayi) - with you; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava; एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; तु (tu) - but; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra; ताम् (tām) - her; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ह (ha) - indeed; पुरुषत्वम् (puruṣatvam) - manhood; कथम् (katham) - how; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; स्त्रीत्वम् (strītvam) - womanhood; रोचयसे (rocayase) - you desire; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(Womanhood indeed I choose, O Śakra, when pleased with you, O Vāsava. Thus having been spoken, but Indra replied to her, the woman, indeed: Manhood, how having abandoned, womanhood you desire, O lord.)
"I choose only womanhood, O Śakra, when you are pleased, O Vāsava." Thus addressed, Indra replied to her: "How is it that, having abandoned manhood, you desire womanhood, O lord?" (13-12-46)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच स्त्रीभूतो राजसत्तमः। स्त्रियाः पुरुषसंयोगे प्रीतिरभ्यधिका सदा ॥ एतस्मात्कारणाच्छक्र स्त्रीत्वमेव वृणोम्यहम् ॥१३-१२-४७॥
evam-uktaḥ pratyuvāca strībhūto rājasattamaḥ। striyāḥ puruṣasaṃyoge prītir-abhyadhikā sadā ॥ etasmāt-kāraṇāc-chakra strītvam-eva vṛṇomy-aham ॥13-12-47॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; स्त्रीभूतः (strībhūtaḥ) - having become a woman; राजसत्तमः (rājasattamaḥ) - best of kings; स्त्रियाः (striyāḥ) - of a woman; पुरुषसंयोगे (puruṣasaṃyoge) - in union with a man; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - exceeding; सदा (sadā) - always; एतस्मात् (etasmāt) - for this; कारणात् (kāraṇāt) - reason; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; स्त्रीत्वम् (strītvam) - womanhood; एव (eva) - only; वृणोमि (vṛṇomi) - I choose; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Thus addressed, replied having become a woman, best of kings. Of a woman, in union with a man, affection exceeding always. For this reason, O Śakra, womanhood only I choose, I.)
Thus addressed, the best of kings who had become a woman replied: 'A woman's affection is always greater in union with a man. For this reason, O Śakra, I choose only womanhood.' (13-12-47)
रमे चैवाधिकं स्त्रीत्वे सत्यं वै देवसत्तम। स्त्रीभावेन हि तुष्टोऽस्मि गम्यतां त्रिदशाधिप ॥१३-१२-४८॥
rame caiva adhikaṃ strītve satyaṃ vai devasattama। strībhāvena hi tuṣṭo'smi gamyatāṃ tridaśādhipa ॥13-12-48॥
[रमे (rame) - I delight; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अधिकं (adhikaṃ) - more; स्त्रीत्वे (strītve) - in womanhood; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; वै (vai) - indeed; देवसत्तम (devasattama) - O best of the gods; स्त्रीभावेन (strībhāvena) - with the state of being a woman; हि (hi) - indeed; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let (you) go; त्रिदशाधिप (tridaśādhipa) - O lord of the gods;]
(I delight and indeed more in womanhood; truth indeed O best of the gods; with the state of being a woman indeed I am pleased; let (you) go O lord of the gods;)
I delight even more in being a woman; truly, O best of the gods, I am pleased with the state of womanhood; you may go, O lord of the gods. (13-12-48)
एवमस्त्विति चोक्त्वा तामापृच्छ्य त्रिदिवं गतः। एवं स्त्रिया महाराज अधिका प्रीतिरुच्यते ॥१३-१२-४९॥
evam astv iti coktvā tām āpṛcchya tridivaṃ gataḥ। evaṃ striyā mahārāja adhikā prītir ucyate ॥13-12-49॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; so be it; इति (iti) - thus; so; end-quote; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (coktvā) - having said; having spoken; ताम् (tām) - her; आपृच्छ्य (āpṛcchya) - having taken leave of; having bid farewell to; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - heaven; the third heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; departed; एवम् (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; स्त्रिया (striyā) - by the woman; by a woman; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; अधिका (adhikā) - greater; more; प्रीतिः (prītiḥ) - affection; love; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; is called;]
(Thus, let it be, having said so and having taken leave of her, (he) went to heaven. Thus, O great king, by a woman, greater affection is said.)
Having said, "So be it," and taking leave of her, he went to heaven. In this way, O great king, it is said that a woman's affection is greater. (13-12-49)
