आर्ष एष भवेद्धर्मः प्राजापत्योऽथ वासुरः। यदेतत्सहधर्मेति पूर्वमुक्तं महर्षिभिः ॥१३-१९-२॥

संदेहः सुमहानेष विरुद्ध इति मे मतिः। इह यः सहधर्मो वै प्रेत्यायं विहितः क्व नु ॥१३-१९-३॥
saṃdehaḥ sumahāneṣa viruddha iti me matiḥ। iha yaḥ sahadharmo vai pretyāyaṃ vihitaḥ kva nu ॥13-19-3॥

This doubt is very great and contradictory—such is my thought. Here, which joint duty indeed is prescribed for after death, where indeed? (13-19-3)
स्वर्गे मृतानां भवति सहधर्मः पितामह। पूर्वमेकस्तु म्रियते क्व चैकस्तिष्ठते वद ॥१३-१९-४॥
svarge mṛtānāṃ bhavati sahadharmaḥ pitāmaha। pūrvam ekas tu mriyate kva ca ekas tiṣṭhate vada ॥13-19-4॥

O grandsire, in heaven, is there companionship in duty among the dead? First, one dies, but where does the other remain? Tell me. (13-19-4)
नानाकर्मफलोपेता नानाकर्मनिवासिनः। नानानिरयनिष्ठान्ता मानुषा बहवो यदा ॥१३-१९-५॥
nānā-karma-phala-upetā nānā-karma-nivāsinaḥ। nānā-niraya-niṣṭhā-antā mānuṣā bahavaḥ yadā ॥13-19-5॥

अनृताः स्त्रिय इत्येवं सूत्रकारो व्यवस्यति। यदानृताः स्त्रियस्तात सहधर्मः कुतः स्मृतः ॥१३-१९-६॥

अनृताः स्त्रिय इत्येवं वेदेष्वपि हि पठ्यते। धर्मोऽयं पौर्विकी सञ्ज्ञा उपचारः क्रियाविधिः ॥१३-१९-७॥

यदेतद्यादृशं चैतद्यथा चैतत्प्रवर्तितम्। निखिलेन महाप्राज्ञ भवानेतद्ब्रवीतु मे ॥१३-१९-९॥
yadetadyādṛśaṃ caitadyathā caitatpravartitam। nikhilena mahāprājña bhavānetadbravītu me ॥13-19-9॥

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। अष्टावक्रस्य संवादं दिशया सह भारत ॥१३-१९-१०॥
atrāpy udāharantīm am itihāsaṃ purātanam। aṣṭāvakrasya saṃvādaṃ diśayā saha bhārata ॥13-19-10॥

She was called Suprabha, truly by name, and was unmatched in beauty on earth, rich in virtues, virtuous in conduct, and radiant in character. (13-19-12)
सा तस्य दृष्ट्वैव मनो जहार शुभलोचना। वनराजी यथा चित्रा वसन्ते कुसुमाचिता ॥१३-१९-१३॥
sā tasya dṛṣṭvaiva mano jahāra śubhalocanā। vanarājī yathā citrā vasante kusumācitā ॥13-19-13॥

As a variegated forest-grove adorned with flowers in spring, the auspicious-eyed lady, having just seen him, stole his mind. (13-19-13)
ऋषिस्तमाह देया मे सुता तुभ्यं शृणुष्व मे। गच्छ तावद्दिशं पुण्यामुत्तरां द्रक्ष्यसे ततः ॥१३-१९-१४॥
ṛṣis tam āha deyā me sutā tubhyaṃ śṛṇuṣva me। gaccha tāvad diśaṃ puṇyām uttarāṃ drakṣyase tataḥ ॥13-19-14॥

किं द्रष्टव्यं मया तत्र वक्तुमर्हति मे भवान्। तथेदानीं मया कार्यं यथा वक्ष्यति मां भवान् ॥१३-१९-१५॥
kiṁ draṣṭavyaṁ mayā tatra vaktumarhati me bhavān। tathedānīṁ mayā kāryaṁ yathā vakṣyati māṁ bhavān ॥13-19-15॥

(What is to be seen by me there, to speak, is worthy to me, you. Thus now by me what is to be done, as you will say to me, you. (13-19-15))
What should I see there? Please tell me, you are worthy to instruct me. Now, I will do as you direct me. (13-19-15)

धनदं समतिक्रम्य हिमवन्तं तथैव च। रुद्रस्यायतनं दृष्ट्वा सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ॥१३-१९-१६॥
dhanadaṃ samatikramya himavantaṃ tathaiva ca। rudrasyāyatanaṃ dṛṣṭvā siddhacāraṇasevitam ॥13-19-16॥
[धनदं (dhanadam) - Kubera; (the giver of wealth); सतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having crossed over; having passed beyond; हिमवन्तं (himavantam) - Himalaya; (the snowy mountain); तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; likewise; च (ca) - and; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; (Shiva); आयतनं (āyatanam) - abode; sanctuary; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सिद्ध (siddha) - perfected beings; चारण (cāraṇa) - celestial minstrels; सेवितम् (sevitam) - attended; served;]
(Having crossed over Kubera, and likewise the Himalaya, and having seen the abode of Rudra attended by Siddhas and Cāraṇas.)
After passing Kubera and likewise the Himalaya, he saw the sanctuary of Rudra, which was attended by Siddhas and celestial minstrels. (13-19-16)
प्रहृष्टैः पार्षदैर्जुष्टं नृत्यद्भिर्विविधाननैः। दिव्याङ्गरागैः पैशाचैर्वन्यैर्नानाविधैस्तथा ॥१३-१९-१७॥
prahṛṣṭaiḥ pārṣadaiḥ juṣṭam nṛtyadbhiḥ vividhānanaiḥ। divyāṅgarāgaiḥ paiśācair vanyaiḥ nānāvidhaiḥ tathā ॥13-19-17॥
[प्रहृष्टैः (prahṛṣṭaiḥ) - by those who are delighted; पार्षदैः (pārṣadaiḥ) - by attendants; जुष्टं (juṣṭam) - adorned; नृत्यद्भिः (nṛtyadbhiḥ) - by those who are dancing; विविधाननैः (vividhānanaiḥ) - with various faces; दिव्याङ्गरागैः (divyāṅgarāgaiḥ) - with divine body-paints; पैशाचैः (paiśācaiḥ) - by piśācas (spirits); वन्यैः (vanyaiḥ) - by forest-dwellers; नानाविधैः (nānāvidhaiḥ) - of various kinds; तथा (tathā) - thus;]

पाणितालसतालैश्च शम्यातालैः समैस्तथा। सम्प्रहृष्टैः प्रनृत्यद्भिः शर्वस्तत्र निषेव्यते ॥१३-१९-१८॥
pāṇitālasatālaiś ca śamyātālaiḥ samais tathā। samprahṛṣṭaiḥ pranṛtyadbhiḥ śarvas tatra niṣevyate ॥13-19-18॥
[पाणि (pāṇi) - hand; ताल (tāla) - clapping; सतालैः (satālaiḥ) - with cymbals; च (ca) - and; शम्या (śamyā) - sticks; तालैः (tālaiḥ) - with cymbals; समैः (samaiḥ) - with equal (beats); तथा (tathā) - thus; सम्प्रहृष्टैः (samprahṛṣṭaiḥ) - with very delighted (ones); प्रनृत्यद्भिः (pranṛtyadbhiḥ) - by those dancing; शर्वः (śarvaḥ) - Śarva (Śiva); तत्र (tatra) - there; निषेव्यते (niṣevyate) - is worshipped;]

इष्टं किल गिरौ स्थानं तद्दिव्यमनुशुश्रुम। नित्यं संनिहितो देवस्तथा पारिषदाः शुभाः ॥१३-१९-१९॥
iṣṭaṃ kila girau sthānaṃ tad divyam anuśuśruma। nityaṃ saṃnihito devaḥ tathā pāriṣadāḥ śubhāḥ ॥13-19-19॥
[इष्टं (iṣṭam) - desired; sought; किल (kila) - indeed; surely; गिरौ (girau) - on the mountain; स्थानं (sthānam) - place; location; तत् (tat) - that; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; heavenly; अनुशुश्रुम (anuśuśruma) - we have heard; we have listened; नित्यं (nityam) - always; constantly; संनिहितः (saṃnihitaḥ) - present; situated; देवः (devaḥ) - god; deity; तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; पारिषदाः (pāriṣadāḥ) - attendants; associates; शुभाः (śubhāḥ) - auspicious; good;]
(Desired indeed on the mountain place that divine we have heard. Always present god also attendants auspicious.)
We have indeed heard that the desired place on the mountain is divine. The god is always present there, along with his auspicious attendants. (13-19-19)
तत्र देव्या तपस्तप्तं शङ्करार्थं सुदुश्चरम्। अतस्तदिष्टं देवस्य तथोमाया इति श्रुतिः ॥१३-१९-२०॥
tatra devyā tapastaptaṃ śaṅkarārthaṃ suduścaram। atastadiṣṭaṃ devasya tathomāyā iti śrutiḥ ॥13-19-20॥

(There by the goddess austerity was performed for Śaṅkara, very difficult to perform; therefore that desired by the god thus Umā thus the Vedic statement.)
There, the goddess performed austerities for Śaṅkara, which were extremely difficult to undertake; therefore, what was desired by the god was thus Umā, as stated in the Vedic scripture. (13-19-20)
तत्र कूपो महान्पार्श्वे देवस्योत्तरतस्तथा। ऋतवः कालरात्रिश्च ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ॥१३-१९-२१॥
tatra kūpo mahān pārśve devasya uttarataḥ tathā। ṛtavaḥ kālarātriś ca ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ ॥13-19-21॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; कूपः (kūpaḥ) - well; महान् (mahān) - great; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - at the side; देवस्य (devasya) - of the deity; उत्तरतः (uttarataḥ) - to the north; तथा (tathā) - likewise; ऋतवः (ṛtavaḥ) - seasons; कालरात्रिः (kālarātriḥ) - night of time; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - human;]
(There a well great at the side of the deity to the north likewise; seasons, night of time and who divine, who and human.)
There, to the north side of the deity, is a great well; likewise, the seasons, the night of time, and those who are divine and those who are human. (13-19-21)
सर्वे देवमुपासन्ते रूपिणः किल तत्र ह। तदतिक्रम्य भवनं त्वया यातव्यमेव हि ॥१३-१९-२२॥
sarve devam upāsante rūpiṇaḥ kila tatra ha। tad atikramya bhavanaṃ tvayā yātavyam eva hi ॥13-19-22॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवम् (devam) - the god; उपासन्ते (upāsante) - worship; रूपिणः (rūpiṇaḥ) - having forms; किल (kila) - indeed; तत्र (tatra) - there; ह (ha) - verily; तत् (tat) - that; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having crossed; भवनम् (bhavanam) - the abode; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; यातव्यम् (yātavyam) - must be gone; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely;]
(All worship the god, having forms, indeed, there, verily. That, having crossed, the abode, by you, must be gone, indeed, surely. (13-19-22))
All those with forms indeed worship the god there. But you must surely go beyond that abode. (13-19-22)
ततो नीलं वनोद्देशं द्रक्ष्यसे मेघसंनिभम्। रमणीयं मनोग्राहि तत्र द्रक्ष्यसि वै स्त्रियम् ॥१३-१९-२३॥
tato nīlaṃ vanoddeśaṃ drakṣyase meghasaṃnibham। ramaṇīyaṃ manogrāhi tatra drakṣyasi vai striyam ॥13-19-23॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from there; नीलम् (nīlam) - dark-blue; वन-उद्देशम् (vana-uddeśam) - forest-region; द्रक्ष्यसे (drakṣyase) - you will see; मेघ-संनिभम् (megha-saṃnibham) - cloud-like; रमणीयम् (ramaṇīyam) - beautiful; मनः-ग्राहि (manaḥ-grāhi) - mind-captivating; तत्र (tatra) - there; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) - you will see; वै (vai) - indeed; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman;]
(From there, a dark-blue forest-region you will see, cloud-like; beautiful, mind-captivating, there you will see indeed a woman.)
From there, you will see a dark-blue forest region resembling a cloud; there, you will indeed see a beautiful and captivating woman. (13-19-23)
तपस्विनीं महाभागां वृद्धां दीक्षामनुष्ठिताम्। द्रष्टव्या सा त्वया तत्र सम्पूज्या चैव यत्नतः ॥१३-१९-२४॥
tapasvinīṃ mahābhāgāṃ vṛddhāṃ dīkṣāmanuṣṭhitām। draṣṭavyā sā tvayā tatra sampūjyā caiva yatnataḥ ॥13-19-24॥
[तपस्विनीं (tapasvinīṃ) - ascetic woman; महाभागां (mahābhāgāṃ) - greatly fortunate; वृद्धां (vṛddhāṃ) - aged; दीक्षाम् (dīkṣām) - initiation; अनुष्ठिताम् (anuṣṭhitām) - performed; द्रष्टव्या (draṣṭavyā) - to be seen; सा (sā) - she; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; तत्र (tatra) - there; सम्पूज्या (sampūjyā) - to be honored; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; यत्नतः (yatnataḥ) - with effort;]
(The ascetic woman, greatly fortunate, aged, initiation performed; she is to be seen by you there, to be honored indeed with effort.)
There, you must see that ascetic woman, who is greatly fortunate, aged, and has performed initiation; she should indeed be honored by you with effort. (13-19-24)
तां दृष्ट्वा विनिवृत्तस्त्वं ततः पाणिं ग्रहीष्यसि। यद्येष समयः सत्यः साध्यतां तत्र गम्यताम् ॥१३-१९-२५॥
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā vinivṛttas tvaṃ tataḥ pāṇiṃ grahīṣyasi। yady eṣa samayaḥ satyaḥ sādhyatāṃ tatra gamyatām ॥13-19-25॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विनिवृत्तः (vinivṛttaḥ) - having turned away; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; ततः (tataḥ) - then; पाणिम् (pāṇim) - hand; ग्रहीष्यसि (grahīṣyasi) - you will take; यदि (yadi) - if; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; समयः (samayaḥ) - agreement; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - true; साध्यताम् (sādhyatām) - let it be accomplished; तत्र (tatra) - there; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let it be gone;]
(Having seen her, having turned away, you then will take the hand. If this agreement is true, let it be accomplished, let it be gone there. (13-19-25))
After seeing her, you will turn away and then take her hand. If this agreement is true, let it be fulfilled; let it be carried out there. (13-19-25)
