Aṣṭāvakra said.
तथास्तु साधयिष्यामि तत्र यास्याम्यसंशयम्। यत्र त्वं वदसे साधो भवान्भवतु सत्यवाक् ॥१३-२०-१॥
tathāstu sādhayiṣyāmi tatra yāsyāmyasaṁśayam। yatra tvaṁ vadase sādho bhavānbhavatu satyavāk ॥13-20-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; साधयिष्यामि (sādhayiṣyāmi) - I shall accomplish; तत्र (tatra) - there; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I shall go; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; यत्र (yatra) - where; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; वदसे (vadase) - you say; साधो (sādho) - O noble one; भवान् (bhavān) - you; भवतु (bhavatu) - may be; सत्यवाक् (satyavāk) - truth-speaker;]
(Thus let it be; I shall accomplish (it); there I shall go without doubt; where you say, O noble one, you may be a truth-speaker.)
So be it; I will accomplish this and go there without doubt, to the place you mention, O noble one. May you be a speaker of truth. (13-20-1)

ततोऽगच्छत्स भगवानुत्तरामुत्तमां दिशम्। हिमवन्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ॥१३-२०-२॥
tato'gacchatsa bhagavānuttarāmuttamāṃ diśam। himavantaṃ giriśreṣṭhaṃ siddhacāraṇasevitam ॥13-20-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; अगच्छत् (agacchat) - went; सः (saḥ) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; उत्तराम् (uttarām) - northern; उत्तमाम् (uttamām) - best; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat; गिरिश्रेष्ठम् (giriśreṣṭham) - best of mountains; सिद्ध (siddha) - perfected beings; चारण (cāraṇa) - celestial singers; सेवितम् (sevitam) - attended;]
(From then, he, the venerable, went to the northern best direction, Himavat, the best of mountains, attended by perfected beings and celestial singers.)
Then the venerable one went to the best northern direction, to Himavat, the greatest of mountains, which is attended by Siddhas and celestial singers. (13-20-2)
स गत्वा द्विजशार्दूलो हिमवन्तं महागिरिम्। अभ्यगच्छन्नदीं पुण्यां बाहुदां धर्मदायिनीम् ॥१३-२०-३॥
sa gatvā dvijaśārdūlo himavantaṃ mahāgirim। abhyagacchannadīṃ puṇyāṃ bāhudāṃ dharmadāyinīm ॥13-20-3॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; द्विजशार्दूलः (dvijaśārdūlaḥ) - best among twice-born (brāhmaṇas); हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat (the Himalaya); महागिरिम् (mahāgirim) - great mountain; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; नदीम् (nadīm) - river; पुण्याम् (puṇyām) - holy; बाहुदाम् (bāhudām) - Bāhudā (name of river); धर्मदायिनीम् (dharmadāyinīm) - giver of dharma;]
(He, having gone, the best among twice-born, Himavat, great mountain, approached the river, holy, Bāhudā, giver of dharma.)
He, the best among the twice-born, having gone to the great mountain Himavat, approached the holy river Bāhudā, the giver of dharma. (13-20-3)
अशोके विमले तीर्थे स्नात्वा तर्प्य च देवताः। तत्र वासाय शयने कौश्ये सुखमुवास ह ॥१३-२०-४॥
aśoke vimale tīrthe snātvā tarpya ca devatāḥ। tatra vāsāya śayane kauśye sukhamuvāsa ha ॥13-20-4॥
[अशोके (aśoke) - in the Ashoka (tree); विमले (vimale) - pure; spotless; तीर्थे (tīrthe) - in the sacred place; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; तर्प्य (tarpya) - having satisfied (with offerings); च (ca) - and; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; तत्र (tatra) - there; वासाय (vāsāya) - for dwelling; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; कौश्ये (kauśye) - silken; सुखम् (sukham) - comfortably; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(In the Ashoka, pure sacred place, having bathed, having satisfied and the deities, there for dwelling, on the bed, silken, comfortably dwelt indeed.)
Having bathed at the pure sacred place of the Ashoka tree and having offered satisfaction to the deities, he then dwelt there comfortably on a silken bed for his stay. (13-20-4)
ततो रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां प्रातरुत्थाय स द्विजः। स्नात्वा प्रादुश्चकाराग्निं हुत्वा चैव विधानतः ॥१३-२०-५॥
tato rātryāṃ vyatītāyāṃ prātarutthāya sa dvijaḥ। snātvā prāduścakārāgniṃ hutvā caiva vidhānataḥ ॥13-20-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; रात्र्यां (rātryām) - in the night; व्यतीतायां (vyatītāyām) - having passed; प्रातरुत्थाय (prātarutthāya) - having risen in the morning; स (sa) - he; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the twice-born; स्नात्वा (snātvā) - having bathed; प्रादुश्चकार (prāduścakāra) - he made manifest; he performed; अग्निं (agniṃ) - the fire; हुत्वा (hutvā) - having offered oblations; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; विधानतः (vidhānataḥ) - according to the injunction;]
(Then, in the night having passed, having risen in the morning, he, the twice-born, having bathed, made manifest the fire, having offered oblations and indeed according to the injunction.)
After the night had passed, the twice-born rose in the morning, bathed, kindled the fire, and performed the oblations according to the prescribed rules. (13-20-5)
रुद्राणीकूपमासाद्य ह्रदे तत्र समाश्वसत्। विश्रान्तश्च समुत्थाय कैलासमभितो ययौ ॥१३-२०-६॥
rudrāṇī-kūpam āsādya hrade tatra samāśvasat। viśrāntaś ca samutthāya kailāsam abhito yayau ॥13-20-6॥
[रुद्राणीकूपम् (rudrāṇī-kūpam) - Rudrāṇī's well; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ह्रदे (hrade) - in the lake; तत्र (tatra) - there; समाश्वसत् (samāśvasat) - he rested; विश्रान्तः (viśrāntaḥ) - having become rested; च (ca) - and; समुत्थाय (samutthāya) - having arisen; कैलासम् (kailāsam) - Kailāsa; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - towards; ययौ (yayau) - he went;]
(Having reached Rudrāṇī's well, he rested in the lake there. Having become rested and arisen, he went towards Kailāsa. (13-20-6))
After reaching Rudrāṇī's well, he rested in the lake there. Once he was refreshed and had arisen, he proceeded towards Kailāsa. (13-20-6)
सोऽपश्यत्काञ्चनद्वारं दीप्यमानमिव श्रिया। मन्दाकिनीं च नलिनीं धनदस्य महात्मनः ॥१३-२०-७॥
so'paśyat kāñcanadvāraṃ dīpyamānam iva śriyā. mandākinīṃ ca nalinīṃ dhanadasya mahātmanaḥ ॥13-20-7॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; काञ्चनद्वारम् (kāñcanadvāram) - golden gate; दीप्यमानम् (dīpyamānam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; श्रिया (śriyā) - with splendor; मन्दाकिनीम् (mandākinīm) - Mandakini (celestial river); च (ca) - and; नलिनीम् (nalinīm) - lotus-pond; धनदस्य (dhanadasya) - of Dhanada (Kubera); महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(He saw a golden gate shining as if with splendor; and the Mandakini and the lotus-pond of the great-souled Dhanada.)
He saw a golden gate shining with splendor, as well as the Mandakini river and the lotus-pond belonging to the great-souled Dhanada (Kubera). (13-20-7)
अथ ते राक्षसाः सर्वे येऽभिरक्षन्ति पद्मिनीम्। प्रत्युत्थिता भगवन्तं मणिभद्रपुरोगमाः ॥१३-२०-८॥
atha te rākṣasāḥ sarve ye'bhirakṣanti padminīm। pratyutthitā bhagavantaṃ maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ ॥13-20-8॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ते (te) - those; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ये (ye) - who; अभिरक्षन्ति (abhirakṣanti) - protect; पद्मिनीम् (padminīm) - Padminī; प्रत्युत्थिता (pratyutthitā) - having risen up; भगवन्तम् (bhagavantam) - the venerable one; मणिभद्रपुरोगमाः (maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ) - headed by Maṇibhadra;]
(Then those rākṣasas, all who protect Padminī, having risen up, the venerable one, headed by Maṇibhadra.)
Then all those rākṣasas who were protecting Padminī, having risen up, together with the venerable one, led by Maṇibhadra, (13-20-8).
स तान्प्रत्यर्चयामास राक्षसान्भीमविक्रमान्। निवेदयत मां क्षिप्रं धनदायेति चाब्रवीत् ॥१३-२०-९॥
sa tānpratyarcayāmāsa rākṣasānbhīmavikramān। nivedayata māṃ kṣipraṃ dhanadāyeti cābravīt ॥13-20-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तान् (tān) - those; प्रत्यर्चयामास (pratyarcayāmāsa) - approached respectfully; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rākṣasas; भीमविक्रमान् (bhīmavikramān) - of terrible prowess; निवेदयत (nivedayata) - inform; माम् (mām) - me; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; धनदाय (dhanadāya) - to Dhanada (Kubera); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(He those approached respectfully rākṣasas of terrible prowess; inform me quickly to Dhanada thus and said;)
He respectfully approached those rākṣasas of terrible prowess and said, "Inform Dhanada of me quickly." (13-20-9)
ते राक्षसास्तदा राजन्भगवन्तमथाब्रुवन्। असौ वैश्रवणो राजा स्वयमायाति तेऽन्तिकम् ॥१३-२०-१०॥
te rākṣasās tadā rājan bhagavantam athābruvan। asau vaiśravaṇo rājā svayam āyāti te'ntikam ॥13-20-10॥
[ते (te) - they; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भगवन्तम् (bhagavantam) - the venerable one; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abrūvan) - they said; असौ (asau) - that; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa; राजा (rājā) - king; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; आयाति (āyāti) - comes; ते (te) - to you; अन्तिकम् (antikam) - near;]
(They rākṣasas then O king to the venerable one then said. That Vaiśravaṇa king himself comes to you near.)
Then those rākṣasas, O king, said to the venerable one: "That king Vaiśravaṇa himself is coming near to you." (13-20-10)
विदितो भगवानस्य कार्यमागमने च यत्। पश्यैनं त्वं महाभागं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ॥१३-२०-११॥
vidito bhagavānasya kāryamāgamane ca yat। paśyainaṃ tvaṃ mahābhāgaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā ॥13-20-11॥
[विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; भगवतः (bhagavataḥ) - of the Lord; अस्य (asya) - his; कार्ये (kārye) - in the matter; आगमने (āgamane) - in coming; च (ca) - and; यत् (yat) - which; पश्य (paśya) - see; एनम् (enam) - this; त्वम् (tvam) - you; महाभागम् (mahābhāgam) - greatly fortunate; ज्वलन्तम् (jvalantam) - shining; इव (iva) - like; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance;]
(Known is the Lord's, in the matter of coming and which; see this, you, greatly fortunate, shining like with brilliance.)
The Lord's purpose in coming is known; see this greatly fortunate one, shining as if with brilliance. (13-20-11)
ततो वैश्रवणोऽभ्येत्य अष्टावक्रमनिन्दितम्। विधिवत्कुशलं पृष्ट्वा ततो ब्रह्मर्षिमब्रवीत् ॥१३-२०-१२॥
tato vaiśravaṇo'bhyetya aṣṭāvakramaninditam। vidhivatkuśalaṃ pṛṣṭvā tato brahmarṣimabravīt ॥13-20-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera); अभ्येत्य (abhyetya) - having approached; अष्टावक्रम् (aṣṭāvakram) - Aṣṭāvakra; अनिन्दितम् (aninditam) - blameless; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - according to rule; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - well-being; पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having asked; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ब्रह्मर्षिम् (brahmarṣim) - the Brahmarṣi; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Then Vaiśravaṇa, having approached the blameless Aṣṭāvakra, having asked about his well-being according to rule, then said to the Brahmarṣi.)
Then Vaiśravaṇa approached the blameless Aṣṭāvakra, inquired about his well-being as prescribed, and then spoke to the Brahmarṣi. (13-20-12)
सुखं प्राप्तो भवान्कच्चित्किं वा मत्तश्चिकीर्षसि। ब्रूहि सर्वं करिष्यामि यन्मां त्वं वक्ष्यसि द्विज ॥१३-२०-१३॥
sukhaṃ prāpto bhavān kaccit kiṃ vā mattaś cikīrṣasi। brūhi sarvaṃ kariṣyāmi yan māṃ tvaṃ vakṣyasi dvija ॥13-20-13॥
[सुखं (sukham) - happiness; comfort; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - obtained; reached; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (honorific); कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; किं (kiṃ) - what; वा (vā) - or; मत् (mat) - from me; चिकीर्षसि (cikīrṣasi) - you wish to do; you intend; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; speak; सर्वं (sarvam) - all; everything; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; यत् (yat) - which; what; माम् (mām) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वक्ष्यसि (vakṣyasi) - you will say; you will tell; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born; (Brahmin);]
(Happiness obtained you whether what or from me you wish to do. Tell all I will do which to me you will say, O twice-born. (13-20-13))
Have you obtained happiness? Is there anything you wish to do with my help? Tell me everything; I will do whatever you tell me, O Brahmin. (13-20-13)
भवनं प्रविश त्वं मे यथाकामं द्विजोत्तम। सत्कृतः कृतकार्यश्च भवान्यास्यत्यविघ्नतः ॥१३-२०-१४॥
bhavanaṃ praviśa tvaṃ me yathākāmaṃ dvijottama। satkṛtaḥ kṛtakāryaś ca bhavān yāsyaty avighnataḥ ॥13-20-14॥
[भवनम् (bhavanam) - house; dwelling; प्रविश (praviśa) - enter; त्वम् (tvam) - you; मे (me) - my; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as you desire; द्विजोत्तम (dvijottama) - best of twice-born; सत्कृतः (satkṛtaḥ) - honored; कृतकार्यः (kṛtakāryaḥ) - one whose task is accomplished; च (ca) - and; भवान् (bhavān) - you; यास्यति (yāsyati) - will go; अविघ्नतः (avighnataḥ) - without obstacle;]
(Enter the house, you, my, as you desire, best of twice-born. Honored, task accomplished and you will go without obstacle.)
O best of the twice-born, enter my house as you desire. Having been honored and your task accomplished, you will depart without any obstacle. (13-20-14)
प्राविशद्भवनं स्वं वै गृहीत्वा तं द्विजोत्तमम्। आसनं स्वं ददौ चैव पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथैव च ॥१३-२०-१५॥
prāviśad bhavanaṃ svaṃ vai gṛhītvā taṃ dvijottamam। āsanaṃ svaṃ dadau caiva pādyam arghyaṃ tathaiva ca ॥13-20-15॥
[प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; भवनम् (bhavanam) - house; स्वम् (svam) - own; वै (vai) - indeed; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; तम् (tam) - him; द्विजोत्तमम् (dvijottamam) - best of the twice-born; आसनम् (āsanam) - seat; स्वम् (svam) - own; ददौ (dadau) - gave; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाद्यम् (pādyam) - water for washing feet; अर्घ्यम् (arghyam) - offering; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(He entered his own house indeed, having taken him, the best of the twice-born; he gave his own seat and indeed also water for washing feet, offering likewise and;)
He entered his own house, having brought the best of the twice-born with him; he gave him his own seat, as well as water for washing the feet and the customary offering, likewise. (13-20-15)
अथोपविष्टयोस्तत्र मणिभद्रपुरोगमाः। निषेदुस्तत्र कौबेरा यक्षगन्धर्वराक्षसाः ॥१३-२०-१६॥
athopaviṣṭayostatra maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ। niṣedustatra kauberā yakṣagandharvarākṣasāḥ ॥13-20-16॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उपविष्टयोः (upaviṣṭayoḥ) - of the two seated; तत्र (tatra) - there; मणिभद्र (maṇibhadra) - Maṇibhadra; पुरोगमाः (purogamāḥ) - led by; निषेदुः (niṣeduḥ) - sat down; तत्र (tatra) - there; कौबेरा (kauberā) - followers of Kubera; यक्ष (yakṣa) - Yakṣas; गन्धर्व (gandharva) - Gandharvas; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - Rākṣasas;]
(Then, of the two seated there, Maṇibhadra led (them); there sat down the followers of Kubera, Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas.)
Then, as the two sat there, Maṇibhadra led the way, and the followers of Kubera—Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas—sat down there. (13-20-16)
ततस्तेषां निषण्णानां धनदो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। भवच्छन्दं समाज्ञाय नृत्येरन्नप्सरोगणाः ॥१३-२०-१७॥
tatasteṣāṃ niṣaṇṇānāṃ dhanado vākyamabravīt। bhavacchandaṃ samājñāya nṛtyerannapsarogaṇāḥ ॥13-20-17॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; निषण्णानां (niṣaṇṇānām) - of those seated; धनदः (dhanadaḥ) - Kubera; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; भवच्छन्दम् (bhavacchandam) - your wish; समाज्ञाय (samājñāya) - having understood; नृत्येरन् (nṛtyeran) - should dance; अप्सरोगणाः (apsarogaṇāḥ) - groups of apsarases;]
(Then, of them, of those seated, Kubera speech spoke. Your wish, having understood, should dance groups of apsarases. (13-20-17))

आतिथ्यं परमं कार्यं शुश्रूषा भवतस्तथा। संवर्ततामित्युवाच मुनिर्मधुरया गिरा ॥१३-२०-१८॥
ātithyaṃ paramaṃ kāryaṃ śuśrūṣā bhavatas tathā। saṃvartatām ity uvāca munir madhurayā girā ॥13-20-18॥
[आतिथ्यं (ātithyaṃ) - hospitality; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - to be done; शुश्रूषा (śuśrūṣā) - service; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by you; तथा (tathā) - thus; संवर्तताम् (saṃvartatām) - let it be performed; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; मुनिः (muniḥ) - the sage; मधुरया (madhurayā) - with sweet; गिरा (girā) - speech;]
(Hospitality supreme to be done, service by you thus; let it be performed thus, said the sage with sweet speech.)
The sage, with sweet words, said: "Supreme hospitality must be performed, and service by you as well; let it be so." (13-20-18)
अथोर्वरा मिश्रकेशी रम्भा चैवोर्वशी तथा। अलम्बुसा घृताची च चित्रा चित्राङ्गदा रुचिः ॥१३-२०-१९॥
athorvarā miśrakeśī rambhā caivorvaśī tathā। alambusā ghṛtācī ca citrā citrāṅgadā ruciḥ ॥13-20-19॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; उर्वरा (urvarā) - Urvarā (name); मिश्रकेशी (miśrakeśī) - Miśrakeśī (name); रम्भा (rambhā) - Rambhā (name); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; उर्वशी (urvaśī) - Urvaśī (name); तथा (tathā) - also; likewise; अलम्बुसा (alambusā) - Alambusā (name); घृताची (ghṛtācī) - Ghṛtācī (name); च (ca) - and; चित्रा (citrā) - Citrā (name); चित्राङ्गदा (citrāṅgadā) - Citrāṅgadā (name); रुचिः (ruciḥ) - Ruci (name);]

मनोहरा सुकेशी च सुमुखी हासिनी प्रभा। विद्युता प्रशमा दान्ता विद्योता रतिरेव च ॥१३-२०-२०॥
manoharā sukeśī ca sumukhī hāsinī prabhā। vidyutā praśamā dāntā vidyotā ratireva ca ॥13-20-20॥
[मनोहरा (manoharā) - mind-pleasing; सुकेशी (sukeśī) - having beautiful hair; च (ca) - and; सुमुखी (sumukhī) - having a beautiful face; हासिनी (hāsinī) - smiling; प्रभा (prabhā) - radiance; विद्युता (vidyutā) - like lightning; प्रशमा (praśamā) - calmness; दान्ता (dāntā) - self-restrained; विद्योता (vidyotā) - shining; रति (rati) - delight; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Mind-pleasing, having beautiful hair, and having a beautiful face, smiling, radiance; like lightning, calmness, self-restrained, shining, delight indeed and.)
She is mind-pleasing, with beautiful hair and a lovely face, smiling and radiant; like lightning, calm, self-restrained, shining, and truly delightful. (13-20-20)
एताश्चान्याश्च वै बह्व्यः प्रनृत्ताप्सरसः शुभाः। अवादयंश्च गन्धर्वा वाद्यानि विविधानि च ॥१३-२०-२१॥
etāś cānyāś ca vai bahvyaḥ pranṛttāpsarasaḥ śubhāḥ। avādayaṃś ca gandharvā vādyāni vividhāni ca ॥13-20-21॥

अथ प्रवृत्ते गान्धर्वे दिव्ये ऋषिरुपावसत्। दिव्यं संवत्सरं तत्र रमन्वै सुमहातपाः ॥१३-२०-२२॥
atha pravṛtte gāndharve divye ṛṣir upāvasat। divyaṃ saṃvatsaraṃ tatra raman vai sumahātapāḥ ॥13-20-22॥

ततो वैश्रवणो राजा भगवन्तमुवाच ह। साग्रः संवत्सरो यातस्तव विप्रेह पश्यतः ॥१३-२०-२३॥

Then King Vaiśravaṇa said to the venerable one, "O brāhmaṇa, a year with remainder has passed for you while you were watching." (13-20-23)
हार्योऽयं विषयो ब्रह्मन्गान्धर्वो नाम नामतः। छन्दतो वर्ततां विप्र यथा वदति वा भवान् ॥१३-२०-२४॥
hāryo'yaṃ viṣayo brahman gāndharvo nāma nāmataḥ। chandato vartatāṃ vipra yathā vadati vā bhavān ॥13-20-24॥

O Brahman, this object called Gandharva by name is to be abandoned; let it proceed as you or others say, O wise one. (13-20-24)
अतिथिः पूजनीयस्त्वमिदं च भवतो गृहम्। सर्वमाज्ञाप्यतामाशु परवन्तो वयं त्वयि ॥१३-२०-२५॥
atithiḥ pūjanīyas tvam idaṃ ca bhavato gṛham। sarvam ājñāpyatām āśu paravanto vayaṃ tvayi ॥13-20-25॥

अथ वैश्रवणं प्रीतो भगवान्प्रत्यभाषत। अर्चितोऽस्मि यथान्यायं गमिष्यामि धनेश्वर ॥१३-२०-२६॥

(Then, to Vaiśravaṇa, pleased, the Lord spoke (in reply). Worshipped I am as properly, I shall go, O Lord of wealth.)
Then, the pleased Lord spoke to Vaiśravaṇa: "I have been worshipped properly; I shall depart, O Lord of wealth." (13-20-26)
प्रीतोऽस्मि सदृशं चैव तव सर्वं धनाधिप। तव प्रसादाद्भगवन्महर्षेश्च महात्मनः ॥ नियोगादद्य यास्यामि वृद्धिमानृद्धिमान्भव ॥१३-२०-२७॥

(Pleased I am; appropriate and indeed your all, O lord of wealth; by your grace, O revered one, and of the great sage, of the great-souled; by command today I shall go; prosperous, affluent, be.)
I am pleased, O lord of wealth, that all is appropriate and fitting for you. By your grace, O revered one, and by the great sage, the great-souled one's favor, at your command today I shall go. Be prosperous and affluent. (13-20-27)
अथ निष्क्रम्य भगवान्प्रययावुत्तरामुखः। कैलासं मन्दरं हैमं सर्वाननुचचार ह ॥१३-२०-२८॥
atha niṣkramya bhagavān prayayāv uttarāmukhaḥ। kailāsaṃ mandaraṃ haimaṃ sarvān anucacāra ha ॥13-20-28॥

(Then, having gone out, the Lord departed facing north. Kailāsa, Mandara, golden (mountain), all he traversed indeed.)
Then, having departed, the Lord went northward and traversed all the mountains—Kailāsa, Mandara, and the golden one. (13-20-28)
तानतीत्य महाशैलान्कैरातं स्थानमुत्तमम्। प्रदक्षिणं ततश्चक्रे प्रयतः शिरसा नमन् ॥ धरणीमवतीर्याथ पूतात्मासौ तदाभवत् ॥१३-२०-२९॥
tānatītya mahāśailān kairātaṃ sthānam uttamam। pradakṣiṇaṃ tataś cakre prayataḥ śirasā naman॥ dharaṇīm avatīryātha pūtātmā asau tadā abhavat॥13-20-29॥

(Having crossed those great mountains, he performed circumambulation of the excellent place of Kairāta, then, with effort, bowing with his head. Having then descended to the earth, that pure-souled one became thus.)

स तं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा त्रिः शैलं चोत्तरामुखः। समेन भूमिभागेन ययौ प्रीतिपुरस्कृतः ॥१३-२०-३०॥
sa taṃ pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā triḥ śailaṃ cottarāmukhaḥ। samena bhūmibhāgena yayau prītipuraskṛtaḥ ॥13-20-30॥

(He, having performed circumambulation of him three times, and the mountain, facing north, with equal portion of ground, he went, preceded by joy.)
He circumambulated him and the mountain three times, facing north, and then proceeded with a joyful heart, keeping an equal portion of ground. (13-20-30)
ततोऽपरं वनोद्देशं रमणीयमपश्यत। सर्वर्तुभिर्मूलफलैः पक्षिभिश्च समन्वितम् ॥ रमणीयैर्वनोद्देशैस्तत्र तत्र विभूषितम् ॥१३-२०-३१॥
tato'paraṃ vanoddeśaṃ ramaṇīyam apaśyata। sarvartubhir mūlaphalaiḥ pakṣibhiś ca samanvitam ॥ ramaṇīyair vanoddeśais tatra tatra vibhūṣitam ॥13-20-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपरेम् (aparam) - another; वनोद्देशम् (vanoddeśam) - forest-region; रमणीयम् (ramaṇīyam) - beautiful; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; सर्वर्तुभिः (sarvartubhiḥ) - with all seasons; मूलफलैः (mūlaphalaiḥ) - with roots and fruits; पक्षिभिः (pakṣibhiḥ) - with birds; च (ca) - and; समन्वितम् (samanvitam) - endowed; रमणीयैः (ramaṇīyaiḥ) - by beautiful; वनोद्देशैः (vanoddeśaiḥ) - forest-regions; तत्र (tatra) - here; तत्र (tatra) - there; विभूषितम् (vibhūṣitam) - adorned;]
(Then another forest-region beautiful he saw. With all seasons, with roots and fruits, and with birds, endowed. By beautiful forest-regions, here and there, adorned. (13-20-31))

[तत्र (tatra) - there; आश्रमपदं (āśramapadam) - hermitage-place; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the illustrious one; अथ (atha) - then; शैलान् (śailān) - mountains; च (ca) - and; विविधाकारान् (vividhākārān) - of various forms; काञ्चनान् (kāñcanān) - golden; रत्नभूषितान् (ratnabhūṣitān) - adorned with jewels; मणिभूमौ (maṇibhūmau) - on jeweled ground; निविष्टाः (niviṣṭāḥ) - situated; च (ca) - and; पुष्करिण्यः (puṣkariṇyaḥ) - lotus-ponds; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(There, the illustrious one then saw a divine hermitage-place; and mountains of various forms, golden, adorned with jewels; and lotus-ponds likewise situated on jeweled ground.)
There, the illustrious one then beheld a divine hermitage; he saw mountains of various shapes, golden and adorned with jewels, and lotus-ponds likewise set upon jeweled ground. (13-20-32)
अन्यान्यपि सुरम्याणि ददर्श सुबहून्यथ। भृशं तस्य मनो रेमे महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ॥१३-२०-३३॥
anyāny api suramyāṇi dadarśa subahūny atha। bhṛśaṃ tasya mano reme maharṣer bhāvitātmanaḥ ॥13-20-33॥
[अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; (neuter plural); अपि (api) - also; सुरम्याणि (suramyāṇi) - very pleasant; (neuter plural); ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; सुबहूनि (subahūni) - very many; (neuter plural); अथ (atha) - then; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; तस्य (tasya) - his; मनो (mano) - mind; रेमे (reme) - delighted; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; भावितात्मनः (bhāvitātmanaḥ) - of the one whose self is purified;]

स तत्र काञ्चनं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नमयं गृहम्। ददर्शाद्भुतसङ्काशं धनदस्य गृहाद्वरम् ॥१३-२०-३४॥
sa tatra kāñcanaṃ divyaṃ sarvaratnamayaṃ gṛham। dadarśādbhutasaṅkāśaṃ dhanadasya gṛhād varam ॥13-20-34॥

Where there are great, various palaces resembling mountains, and beautiful mansions and various jewels. (13-20-35)
मन्दारपुष्पैः सङ्कीर्णा तथा मन्दाकिनी नदी। स्वयम्प्रभाश्च मणयो वज्रैर्भूमिश्च भूषिता ॥१३-२०-३६॥
mandārapuṣpaiḥ saṅkīrṇā tathā mandākinī nadī। svayamprabhāś ca maṇayo vajrair bhūmiś ca bhūṣitā ॥13-20-36॥

नानाविधैश्च भवनैर्विचित्रमणितोरणैः। मुक्ताजालपरिक्षिप्तैर्मणिरत्नविभूषितैः ॥ मनोदृष्टिहरै रम्यैः सर्वतः संवृतं शुभैः ॥१३-२०-३७॥

(By various kinds and mansions, wondrous jewel arches, pearl nets enclosed, jewel gems adorned, mind-sight captivating beautiful, on all sides enclosed auspicious.)
It was surrounded on all sides by various kinds of mansions with wondrous jewel arches, enclosed by nets of pearls, adorned with jewel gems, and beautiful, auspicious structures that captivated the mind and sight. (13-20-37)
ऋषिः समन्ततोऽपश्यत्तत्र तत्र मनोरमम्। ततोऽभवत्तस्य चिन्ता क्व मे वासो भवेदिति ॥१३-२०-३८॥
ṛṣiḥ samantato'paśyattatra tatra manoramam। tato'bhavattasya cintā kva me vāso bhavediti ॥13-20-38॥

(The sage saw all around there and there the pleasing (place). Then arose in his thought: "Where might my dwelling be?" thus.)

अथ द्वारं समभितो गत्वा स्थित्वा ततोऽब्रवीत्। अतिथिं मामनुप्राप्तमनुजानन्तु येऽत्र वै ॥१३-२०-३९॥
atha dvāraṃ samabhito gatvā sthitvā tato'bravīt। atithiṃ māmanuprāptamanujānantu ye'tra vai ॥13-20-39॥

(Then, surrounded by maidens, from that house emerged various forms, seven, O lord, maidens, all enchanting.)
Then, O lord, seven enchanting maidens of various forms, all together, emerged from that house, surrounding the maiden. (13-20-40)
यां यामपश्यत्कन्यां स सा सा तस्य मनोऽहरत्। नाशक्नुवद्धारयितुं मनोऽथास्यावसीदति ॥१३-२०-४१॥
yāṃ yām apaśyat kanyāṃ sa sā sā tasya mano'harat। nāśaknuvad dhārayituṃ mano'thāsyāvasīdati ॥13-20-41॥
[याम् (yām) - whom; (feminine accusative singular); याम् (yām) - whom; (feminine accusative singular); अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; girl; स (sa) - he; सा (sā) - she; सा (sā) - she; तस्य (tasya) - his; मनोऽहरत् (mano'harat) - mind took away; stole the mind; न (na) - not; अशक्नुवत् (aśaknuvat) - was able; धारयितुं (dhārayitum) - to restrain; to hold; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; अवसीदति (avasīdati) - sinks; becomes dejected;]
(Whomever maiden he saw, she stole his mind. Not was able to restrain (his) mind, then his mind sinks.)
Whichever maiden he saw, she stole his mind; he was unable to restrain his mind, and then his mind became dejected. (13-20-41)
ततो धृतिः समुत्पन्ना तस्य विप्रस्य धीमतः। अथ तं प्रमदाः प्राहुर्भगवान्प्रविशत्विति ॥१३-२०-४२॥
tato dhṛtiḥ samutpannā tasya viprasya dhīmataḥ। atha taṃ pramadāḥ prāhur bhagavān praviśatv iti ॥13-20-42॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from then; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; समुत्पन्ना (samutpannā) - arisen; तस्य (tasya) - of him; विप्रस्य (viprasya) - of the brāhmaṇa; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; अथ (atha) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; प्रमदाः (pramadāḥ) - women; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - said; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; प्रविशतु (praviśatu) - may enter; इति (iti) - thus;]
(From then, steadfastness arose of him, of the wise brāhmaṇa. Then, him, the women said, "Let the revered one enter," thus.)
Then, steadfastness arose in that wise brāhmaṇa. After that, the women said to him, "Let the revered one enter." (13-20-42)
स च तासां सुरूपाणां तस्यैव भवनस्य च। कौतूहलसमाविष्टः प्रविवेश गृहं द्विजः ॥१३-२०-४३॥
sa ca tāsāṃ surūpāṇāṃ tasyaiva bhavanasya ca। kautūhalasamāviṣṭaḥ praviveśa gṛhaṃ dvijaḥ ॥13-20-43॥

(He and of those beautiful ones, and of that very house, filled with curiosity, the twice-born entered the house.)

तत्रापश्यज्जरायुक्तामरजोम्बरधारिणीम्। वृद्धां पर्यङ्कमासीनां सर्वाभरणभूषिताम् ॥१३-२०-४४॥
tatrāpaśyaj jarāyuktām arajombara-dhāriṇīm। vṛddhāṃ paryaṅkam āsīnāṃ sarvābharaṇa-bhūṣitām ॥13-20-44॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; जरायुक्ताम् (jarāyuktām) - afflicted with old age; अरजोम्बर (arajombara) - clean garment; धारिणीम् (dhāriṇīm) - wearing; वृद्धाम् (vṛddhām) - old woman; पर्यङ्कम् (paryaṅkam) - couch; आसीनाम् (āsīnām) - seated; सर्वाभरण (sarvābharaṇa) - all ornaments; भूषिताम् (bhūṣitām) - adorned;]
(There he saw a woman afflicted with old age, wearing a clean garment, old, seated on a couch, adorned with all ornaments.)

स्वस्तीति चाथ तेनोक्ता सा स्त्री प्रत्यवदत्तदा। प्रत्युत्थाय च तं विप्रमास्यतामित्युवाच ह ॥१३-२०-४५॥

(Well-being thus and then by him spoken she woman replied then; having risen up and him brāhmaṇa be seated thus said indeed.)
When he said 'well-being', then that woman replied at that time; having risen and addressing the brāhmaṇa, she said, 'Be seated', indeed. (13-20-45)

सर्वाः स्वानालयान्यान्तु एका मामुपतिष्ठतु। सुप्रज्ञाता सुप्रशान्ता शेषा गच्छन्तु च्छन्दतः ॥१३-२०-४६॥
sarvāḥ svānālayāny āntu ekā mām upatiṣṭhatu. suprajñātā supraśāntā śeṣā gacchantu chanda taḥ ॥13-20-46॥
[सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (feminine); स्व (sva) - own; आनालयानि (ānalayāni) - to abodes; यान्तु (yāntu) - may go; एका (ekā) - one (feminine); माम् (mām) - me; उपतिष्ठतु (upatiṣṭhatu) - may attend; सुप्रज्ञाता (suprajñātā) - well-wise; सुप्रशान्ता (supraśāntā) - well-calm; शेषाः (śeṣāḥ) - the rest (feminine); गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - may go; च्छन्दतः (chandataḥ) - at will;]
(All (feminine) may go to their own abodes; one (feminine) may attend me. Well-wise, well-calm, the rest (feminine) may go at will.)
Let all the women go to their own homes; let one remain to attend to me. Let the rest, who are wise and calm, depart as they wish. (13-20-46)
ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य कन्यास्तास्तमृषिं तदा। निराक्रामन्गृहात्तस्मात्सा वृद्धाथ व्यतिष्ठत ॥१३-२०-४७॥
tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya kanyās tās tam ṛṣiṃ tadā। nirākrāman gṛhāt tasmāt sā vṛddhā atha vyatiṣṭhata ॥13-20-47॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य (pradakṣiṇīkṛtya) - having circumambulated; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; ताः (tāḥ) - those; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; तदा (tadā) - then; निराक्रामन् (nirākrāman) - departed; गृहात् (gṛhāt) - from the house; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; सा (sā) - she; वृद्धा (vṛddhā) - old woman; अथ (atha) - then; व्यतिष्ठत (vyatiṣṭhata) - remained;]
(Then, having circumambulated, those maidens him the sage then departed from the house from that; she the old woman then remained.)
Then, after circumambulating the sage, those maidens departed from that house; the old woman remained there. (13-20-47)
अथ तां संविशन्प्राह शयने भास्वरे तदा। त्वयापि सुप्यतां भद्रे रजनी ह्यतिवर्तते ॥१३-२०-४८॥
atha tāṃ saṃviśan prāha śayane bhāsvare tadā। tvayā api supyatāṃ bhadre rajanī hy ativartate ॥13-20-48॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; संविशन् (saṃviśan) - lying down together; प्राह (prāha) - said; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; भास्वरे (bhāsvare) - shining; तदा (tadā) - then; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अपि (api) - also; सुप्यताम् (supyatām) - let (it) be slept; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; रजनी (rajanī) - night; हि (hi) - indeed; अतिवर्तते (ativartate) - is passing;]
(Then, lying down with her, he said on the shining bed then: "You also sleep, O auspicious one; the night indeed is passing." (13-20-48))
Then, as he lay down with her on the shining bed, he said: "You too should sleep, dear; the night is indeed passing." (13-20-48)
संलापात्तेन विप्रेण तथा सा तत्र भाषिता। द्वितीये शयने दिव्ये संविवेश महाप्रभे ॥१३-२०-४९॥
saṁlāpāttena vipreṇa tathā sā tatra bhāṣitā। dvitīye śayane divye saṁviveśa mahāprabhe ॥13-20-49॥
[संलापात् (saṁlāpāt) - from conversation; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the Brāhmaṇa; तथा (tathā) - thus; सा (sā) - she; तत्र (tatra) - there; भाषिता (bhāṣitā) - spoken to; द्वितीये (dvitīye) - in the second; शयने (śayane) - on the bed; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; संविवेश (saṁviveśa) - she entered; महाप्रभे (mahāprabhe) - O great lord;]
(From conversation by him, by the Brāhmaṇa, thus she there spoken to, in the second on the bed, divine, she entered, O great lord.)
After conversing with the Brāhmaṇa in this way, she, having been spoken to there, entered the second divine bed, O great lord. (13-20-49)
अथ सा वेपमानाङ्गी निमित्तं शीतजं तदा। व्यपदिश्य महर्षेर्वै शयनं चाध्यरोहत ॥१३-२०-५०॥
atha sā vepamānāṅgī nimittaṃ śītajaṃ tadā। vyapadiśya maharṣervai śayanaṃ cādhyarohata ॥13-20-50॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सा (sā) - she; वेपमानाङ्गी (vepamānāṅgī) - with trembling limbs; निमित्तं (nimittaṃ) - omen; शीतजं (śītajaṃ) - born of cold; तदा (tadā) - then; व्यपदिश्य (vyapadiśya) - having indicated; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; वै (vai) - indeed; शयनं (śayanaṃ) - bed; च (ca) - and; अध्यरोहत (adhyarohata) - ascended;]
(Then she, with trembling limbs, omen born of cold then, having indicated, of the great sage indeed, bed and ascended.)
Then she, her limbs trembling from an omen born of cold, having indicated this to the great sage, ascended the bed. (13-20-50)
स्वागतं स्वागतेनास्तु भगवांस्तामभाषत। सोपागूहद्भुजाभ्यां तु ऋषिं प्रीत्या नरर्षभ ॥१३-२०-५१॥
svāgataṃ svāgatenāstu bhagavāṃstāmabhāṣata। sopāgūhadbhujābhyāṃ tu ṛṣiṃ prītyā nararṣabha ॥13-20-51॥
[स्वागतं (svāgatam) - welcome; स्वागतेन (svāgatena) - with welcome; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; ताम् (tām) - her; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; सः (saḥ) - he; उपागूहत् (upāgūhat) - embraced; भुजाभ्यां (bhujābhyām) - with (his) two arms; तु (tu) - but; ऋषिं (ṛṣim) - the sage; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; नरर्षभ (nararṣabha) - bull among men;]
(Welcome with welcome let it be; the venerable one her spoke; he embraced with (his) two arms but the sage with affection bull among men.)
The venerable one said to her, "Welcome! Let there be welcome." Then, O bull among men, he affectionately embraced the sage with both his arms. (13-20-51)
निर्विकारमृषिं चापि काष्ठकुड्योपमं तदा। दुःखिता प्रेक्ष्य सञ्जल्पमकार्षीदृषिणा सह ॥१३-२०-५२॥
nirvikāram ṛṣiṁ cāpi kāṣṭhakuḍyopamaṁ tadā। duḥkhitā prekṣya sañjalpam akārṣīd ṛṣiṇā saha ॥13-20-52॥
[निर्विकारम् (nirvikāram) - unchanging; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṁ) - sage; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; काष्ठकुड्योपमं (kāṣṭhakuḍyopamam) - like a wooden wall; तदा (tadā) - then; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - distressed; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; सञ्जल्पम् (sañjalpam) - speech; अकार्षीत् (akārṣīt) - made; ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - with the sage; सह (saha) - together;]
(Unchanging sage and also like a wooden wall then, distressed having seen, speech made with the sage together.)
Then, seeing the unchanging sage, who was like a wooden wall, she, being distressed, spoke together with the sage. (13-20-52)
ब्रह्मन्न कामकारोऽस्ति स्त्रीणां पुरुषतो धृतिः। कामेन मोहिता चाहं त्वां भजन्तीं भजस्व माम् ॥१३-२०-५३॥
brahmanna kāmakāro'sti strīṇāṃ puruṣato dhṛtiḥ। kāmena mohitā cāhaṃ tvāṃ bhajantīṃ bhajasva mām ॥13-20-53॥
[ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कामकारः (kāmakāraḥ) - desire-based action; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; पुरुषतः (puruṣataḥ) - from men; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; कामेन (kāmena) - by desire; मोहिता (mohitā) - deluded; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; भजन्तीम् (bhajantīm) - serving; भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept; माम् (mām) - me;]
(O Brahman, desire-based action is not; of women, steadfastness from men. By desire, deluded and I, you serving, accept me.)
O Brahman, there is no desire-based action; the steadfastness of women comes from men. Deluded by desire, I am, and as I serve you, accept me. (13-20-53)
प्रहृष्टो भव विप्रर्षे समागच्छ मया सह। उपगूह च मां विप्र कामार्ताहं भृशं त्वयि ॥१३-२०-५४॥
prahṛṣṭo bhava viprarṣe samāgaccha mayā saha। upagūha ca māṃ vipra kāmārtāhaṃ bhṛśaṃ tvayi ॥13-20-54॥
[प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; भव (bhava) - be; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; समागच्छ (samāgaccha) - come together; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together; उपगूह (upagūha) - embrace; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; विप्र (vipra) - O Brāhmaṇa; कामार्ता (kāmārtā) - afflicted by desire; अहम् (aham) - I; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - intensely; त्वयि (tvayi) - for you;]
(Delighted be O best of Brāhmaṇas, come together with me. Embrace and me, O Brāhmaṇa, afflicted by desire I intensely for you. (13-20-54))
O best of Brāhmaṇas, be delighted and come together with me. Embrace me, O Brāhmaṇa, for I am intensely afflicted by desire for you. (13-20-54)
एतद्धि तव धर्मात्मंस्तपसः पूज्यते फलम्। प्रार्थितं दर्शनादेव भजमानां भजस्व माम् ॥१३-२०-५५॥
etaddhi tava dharmātmaṃstapasaḥ pūjyate phalam। prārthitaṃ darśanādeva bhajamānāṃ bhajasva mām ॥13-20-55॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - O righteous-souled one; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; प्रार्थितम् (prārthitam) - desired; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from seeing; एव (eva) - indeed; भजमानाम् (bhajamānām) - of those who seek; भजस्व (bhajasva) - accept; माम् (mām) - me;]
(This indeed, your O righteous-souled one, of austerity is honored fruit; desired from seeing indeed of those who seek, accept me.)
O righteous-souled one, this is indeed the honored fruit of your austerity; as desired, from merely seeing, accept me who seeks you. (13-20-55)
सद्म चेदं वनं चेदं यच्चान्यदपि पश्यसि। प्रभुत्वं तव सर्वत्र मयि चैव न संशयः ॥१३-२०-५६॥
sadma cedaṃ vanaṃ cedaṃ yaccānyadapi paśyasi। prabhutvaṃ tava sarvatra mayi caiva na saṃśayaḥ ॥13-20-56॥
[सद्म (sadma) - house; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; वनम् (vanam) - forest; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अपि (api) - also; पश्यसि (paśyasi) - you see; प्रभुत्वम् (prabhutvam) - sovereignty; तव (tava) - your; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; मयि (mayi) - in me; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(House and this, forest and this, which and other also you see; sovereignty your everywhere in me and indeed not doubt;)
This house, this forest, and whatever else you see—your sovereignty is everywhere, including in me; there is no doubt about it. (13-20-56)
सर्वान्कामान्विधास्यामि रमस्व सहितो मया। रमणीये वने विप्र सर्वकामफलप्रदे ॥१३-२०-५७॥
sarvān kāmān vidhāsyāmi ramasva sahitaḥ mayā। ramaṇīye vane vipra sarva-kāma-phala-prade ॥13-20-57॥
[सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; (accusative plural); कामान् (kāmān) - desires; (accusative plural); विधास्यामि (vidhāsyāmi) - I shall grant; (future of √dhā, to give, with vi- upasarga); रमस्व (ramasva) - enjoy; (imperative of √ram, to delight); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; (with); मया (mayā) - with me; (instrumental singular); रमणीये (ramaṇīye) - beautiful; (locative singular); वने (vane) - in the forest; (locative singular); विप्र (vipra) - O brāhmaṇa; (vocative); सर्वकामफलप्रदे (sarva-kāma-phala-prade) - bestowing all desired fruits; (locative singular);]
(All desires I shall grant; enjoy together with me in the beautiful forest, O brāhmaṇa, bestowing all desired fruits.)
O brāhmaṇa, I shall grant all your desires; enjoy with me in this beautiful forest, which bestows all desired fruits. (13-20-57)
त्वद्वशाहं भविष्यामि रंस्यसे च मया सह। सर्वान्कामानुपाश्नानो ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ॥१३-२०-५८॥
tvad-vaśāhaṃ bhaviṣyāmi raṃsyase ca mayā saha। sarvān kāmān upāśnāno ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ ॥13-20-58॥
[त्वद्वशा (tvad-vaśā) - under your control; अहम् (aham) - I; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - shall become; रंस्यसे (raṃsyase) - you will enjoy; च (ca) - and; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; कामान् (kāmān) - desires; उपाश्नानः (upāśnānaḥ) - enjoying; ये (ye) - which; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; ये (ye) - which; च (ca) - and; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - human;]
(I shall become under your control; you will enjoy together with me, enjoying all desires which are divine and which are human.)
I will be under your control; you will enjoy with me, experiencing all desires, both divine and human. (13-20-58)
नातः परं हि नारीणां कार्यं किञ्चन विद्यते। यथा पुरुषसंसर्गः परमेतद्धि नः फलम् ॥१३-२०-५९॥
nātaḥ paraṃ hi nārīṇāṃ kāryaṃ kiñcana vidyate। yathā puruṣasaṃsargaḥ parama etad dhi naḥ phalam ॥13-20-59॥
[न (na) - not; अतः (ataḥ) - than this; परं (param) - further; beyond; हि (hi) - indeed; नारीणां (nārīṇām) - of women; कार्यं (kāryam) - duty; action; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; पुरुषसंसर्गः (puruṣasaṃsargaḥ) - association with a man; परम (parama) - supreme; highest; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; result;]
(Not than this further indeed of women duty anything exists; as association with a man supreme this indeed for us fruit;)
Indeed, there is no duty of women beyond this; just as association with a man is the highest fruit for us. (13-20-59)
आत्मच्छन्देन वर्तन्ते नार्यो मन्मथचोदिताः। न च दह्यन्ति गच्छन्त्यः सुतप्तैरपि पांसुभिः ॥१३-२०-६०॥
ātmacchandena vartante nāryo manmathacoditāḥ। na ca dahyanti gacchantyaḥ sutaptairapi pāṃsubhiḥ ॥13-20-60॥
[आत्मच्छन्देन (ātmacchandena) - by their own will; वर्तन्ते (vartante) - they behave; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; मन्मथचोदिताः (manmathacoditāḥ) - impelled by desire; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दह्यन्ति (dahyanti) - are burned; गच्छन्त्यः (gacchantyaḥ) - those who go; सुतप्तैः (sutaptaiḥ) - well-heated; अपि (api) - even; पांसुभिः (pāṃsubhiḥ) - with sand;]
(By their own will behave women impelled by desire; not and are burned those who go even with well-heated sand.)
Women, impelled by desire, act according to their own will; and those who go (thus) are not burned even by well-heated sand. (13-20-60)

परदारानहं भद्रे न गच्छेयं कथञ्चन। दूषितं धर्मशास्त्रेषु परदाराभिमर्शनम् ॥१३-२०-६१॥
paradārān ahaṃ bhadre na gaccheyaṃ kathaṃcana। dūṣitaṃ dharmaśāstreṣu paradārābhimarśanam ॥13-20-61॥
[परदारान् (paradārān) - other men's wives; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; न (na) - not; गच्छेयं (gaccheyaṃ) - would go; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; दूषितं (dūṣitaṃ) - condemned; धर्मशास्त्रेषु (dharmaśāstreṣu) - in the treatises on dharma; परदाराभिमर्शनम् (paradārābhimarśanam) - contact with other men's wives;]
(Other men's wives I, O auspicious one, would not go to in any way. Condemned in the treatises on dharma is contact with other men's wives. (13-20-61))
O auspicious one, I would never approach other men's wives in any way. Contact with other men's wives is condemned in the treatises on dharma. (13-20-61)
भद्रे निवेष्टुकामं मां विद्धि सत्येन वै शपे। विषयेष्वनभिज्ञोऽहं धर्मार्थं किल सन्ततिः ॥१३-२०-६२॥
bhadre niveṣṭukāmaṃ māṃ viddhi satyena vai śape। viṣayeṣvanabhijño'haṃ dharmārthaṃ kila santatiḥ ॥13-20-62॥
[भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; निवेष्टुकामं (niveṣṭukāmaṃ) - desiring to settle; माम् (mām) - me; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; वै (vai) - indeed; शपे (śape) - I swear; विषयेषु (viṣayeṣu) - in the objects; अनभिज्ञः (anabhijñaḥ) - unacquainted; अहम् (aham) - I; धर्मार्थम् (dharmārtham) - for the sake of dharma; किल (kila) - indeed; सन्ततिः (santatiḥ) - progeny;]
(O auspicious one, desiring to settle me, know, by truth indeed I swear. In the objects unacquainted I, for the sake of dharma indeed progeny.)
O blessed one, know that I, wishing to settle, swear to you truly: I am unacquainted with sense objects; this progeny is indeed for the sake of dharma. (13-20-62)
एवं लोकान्गमिष्यामि पुत्रैरिति न संशयः। भद्रे धर्मं विजानीष्व ज्ञात्वा चोपरमस्व ह ॥१३-२०-६३॥
evaṃ lokān gamiṣyāmi putrair iti na saṃśayaḥ। bhadre dharmaṃ vijānīṣva jñātvā coparamasva ha ॥13-20-63॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - with sons; इति (iti) - thus; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious one; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; विजानीष्व (vijānīṣva) - know; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; च (ca) - and; उपरमस्व (uparamasva) - cease; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus, I shall go to the worlds with (my) sons, thus; not (is there) doubt. O auspicious one, know duty, and having known, indeed cease.)
Thus, I will go to the worlds with my sons; there is no doubt about it. O auspicious one, understand your duty, and having understood, indeed desist. (13-20-63)

नानिलोऽग्निर्न वरुणो न चान्ये त्रिदशा द्विज। प्रियाः स्त्रीणां यथा कामो रतिशीला हि योषितः ॥१३-२०-६४॥
nānilō'gnirna varuṇō na cānyē tridaśā dvija। priyāḥ strīṇāṃ yathā kāmō ratiśīlā hi yōṣitaḥ ॥13-20-64॥
[न (na) - not; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - wind; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; न (na) - not; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the thirty gods; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born; प्रियाः (priyāḥ) - dear; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - to women; यथा (yathā) - as; कामः (kāmaḥ) - Kāma (god of love); रतिशीला (ratiśīlā) - fond of pleasure; हि (hi) - indeed; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women;]
(Not wind, not fire, not Varuṇa, nor other thirty gods, O twice-born, are dear to women as Kāma, for women are indeed fond of pleasure.)
O twice-born, neither the wind, nor fire, nor Varuṇa, nor any of the other thirty gods are as dear to women as Kāma, for women are indeed fond of pleasure. (13-20-64)
सहस्रैका यता नारी प्राप्नोतीह कदाचन। तथा शतसहस्रेषु यदि काचित्पतिव्रता ॥१३-२०-६५॥
sahasraikā yatā nārī prāpnotīha kadācana. tathā śatasahasreṣu yadi kācitpativratā ॥13-20-65॥
[सहस्रैका (sahasraikā) - one among a thousand; यता (yatā) - as; नारी (nārī) - woman; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - obtains; इह (iha) - here; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; तथा (tathā) - so; शतसहस्रेषु (śatasahasreṣu) - among a hundred thousand; यदि (yadi) - if; काचित् (kācit) - any (woman); पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to her husband;]
(One among a thousand, as a woman obtains here at any time; so among a hundred thousand, if any (woman) is devoted to her husband.)
Just as only one woman among a thousand is ever found here, so too, among a hundred thousand, if there is any woman devoted to her husband. (13-20-65)
नैता जानन्ति पितरं न कुलं न च मातरम्। न भ्रातॄन्न च भर्तारं न पुत्रान्न च देवरान् ॥१३-२०-६६॥
naitā jānanti pitaraṃ na kulaṃ na ca mātaram। na bhrātṝn na ca bhartāraṃ na putrān na ca devarān ॥13-20-66॥
[न (na) - not; एता (etā) - these (feminine plural); जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; पितरम् (pitaraṃ) - father; न (na) - not; कुलम् (kulaṃ) - family; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother; न (na) - not; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; न (na) - not; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; देवरान् (devarān) - brothers-in-law;]
(These do not know father, not family, and not mother; not brothers, and not husband, not sons, and not brothers-in-law.)
These women do not recognize their father, nor their family, nor even their mother; nor their brothers, nor their husband, nor their sons, nor their brothers-in-law. (13-20-66)
लीलायन्त्यः कुलं घ्नन्ति कूलानीव सरिद्वराः। दोषांश्च मन्दान्मन्दासु प्रजापतिरभाषत ॥१३-२०-६७॥
līlāyantyaḥ kulaṃ ghnanti kūlānīva saridvarāḥ। doṣāṃś ca mandān mandāsu prajāpatiḥ abhāṣata ॥13-20-67॥
[लीलायन्त्यः (līlāyantyaḥ) - sporting; behaving playfully; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; lineage; घ्नन्ति (ghnanti) - destroy; strike; कूलानि (kūlāni) - banks; riverbanks; इव (iva) - like; as; सरिद्वराः (saridvarāḥ) - excellent rivers; best of rivers; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; defects; च (ca) - and; मन्दान् (mandān) - weak; slow; मन्दासु (mandāsu) - in the slow ones; among the weak ones; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajapati; the lord of creatures; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; said;]
(Sporting ones destroy the family like excellent rivers (destroy) the banks. And Prajapati spoke about the faults among the weak ones.)
Those who behave playfully destroy their family just as the best of rivers erode their banks. Prajapati spoke about the faults found among the weak. (13-20-67)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhīṣma said.
ततः स ऋषिरेकाग्रस्तां स्त्रियं प्रत्यभाषत। आस्यतां रुचिरं छन्दः किं वा कार्यं ब्रवीहि मे ॥१३-२०-६८॥
tataḥ sa ṛṣir ekāgrāṃ tāṃ striyaṃ pratyabhāṣata। āsyatāṃ ruciraṃ chandaḥ kiṃ vā kāryaṃ bravīhi me ॥13-20-68॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; ऋषि (ṛṣi) - sage; एकाग्रां (ekāgrām) - concentrated; तां (tām) - that; स्त्रियं (striyam) - woman; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; आस्यतां (āsyatām) - be seated; रुचिरं (ruciram) - pleasant; छन्दः (chandaḥ) - wish; किं (kiṃ) - what; वा (vā) - or; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(Then he, the sage, addressed that concentrated woman: "Be seated, pleasant wish, what or task, tell to me.")
Then the sage addressed that focused woman: "Please be seated. Tell me your pleasant wish or what task you have." (13-20-68)
सा स्त्री प्रोवाच भगवन्द्रक्ष्यसे देशकालतः। वस तावन्महाप्राज्ञ कृतकृत्यो गमिष्यसि ॥१३-२०-६९॥
sā strī provāca bhagavan rakṣyase deśakālataḥ। vasa tāvan mahāprājña kṛtakṛtyo gamiṣyasi ॥13-20-69॥
[सा (sā) - she; स्त्री (strī) - woman; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; रक्ष्यसे (rakṣyase) - you will be protected; देशकालतः (deśakālataḥ) - from place and time; वस (vasa) - stay; तावन् (tāvan) - for now; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - having accomplished your purpose; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go;]
(She woman said: O revered one, you will be protected from place and time. Stay for now, O greatly wise one; having accomplished your purpose, you will go.)
That woman said: "O revered one, you will be protected from dangers of place and time. Stay here for now, O greatly wise one; when your purpose is accomplished, you may depart." (13-20-69)
ब्रह्मर्षिस्तामथोवाच स तथेति युधिष्ठिर। वत्स्येऽहं यावदुत्साहो भवत्या नात्र संशयः ॥१३-२०-७०॥
brahmarṣis tām atho vāca sa tatheti yudhiṣṭhira। vatsye'ham yāvad utsāho bhavatyā nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥13-20-70॥
[ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - brahma-sage; ताम् (tām) - her; अथ (atha) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; सः (saḥ) - he; तथा (tathā) - so; इति (iti) - thus; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; वत्स्ये (vatsye) - I shall stay; अहम् (aham) - I; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; उत्साहः (utsāhaḥ) - effort; भवत्या (bhavatyā) - by you; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(The brahma-sage then said to her so, O Yudhishthira: I shall stay as long as there is effort by you; there is no doubt here.)
The brahma-sage then said to her in this way, O Yudhishthira: "I will remain as long as you make the effort; there is no doubt about this." (13-20-70)
अथर्षिरभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य स्त्रियं तां जरयान्विताम्। चिन्तां परमिकां भेजे सन्तप्त इव चाभवत् ॥१३-२०-७१॥
atharṣir abhisamprekṣya striyaṃ tāṃ jarayānvitām। cintāṃ paramikāṃ bheje santapta iva cābhavat ॥13-20-71॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य (abhisamprekṣya) - having observed closely; स्त्रियं (striyaṃ) - woman; तां (tāṃ) - her; जरया (jarayā) - with old age; अन्विताम् (anvitām) - endowed; चिन्तां (cintāṃ) - thought; परमिकां (paramikāṃ) - supreme; भेजे (bheje) - entered; सन्तप्त (santapta) - tormented; इव (iva) - as if; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Then the sage, having observed closely that woman endowed with old age, entered supreme thought and became as if tormented.)
Then the sage, seeing that woman who had become aged, fell into deep thought and became as if tormented. (13-20-71)
यद्यदङ्गं हि सोऽपश्यत्तस्या विप्रर्षभस्तदा। नारमत्तत्र तत्रास्य दृष्टी रूपपराजिता ॥१३-२०-७२॥
yadyadaṅgaṃ hi so'paśyattasyā viprarṣabhastadā। nāramattatra tatrāsya dṛṣṭī rūpaparājitā ॥13-20-72॥
[यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; अङ्गं (aṅgaṃ) - limb; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; तस्या (tasyā) - of her; विप्रर्षभः (viprarṣabhaḥ) - the best among Brāhmaṇas; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; अरमत् (aramat) - was pleased; तत्र (tatra) - there; तत्र (tatra) - there; अस्य (asya) - his; दृष्टी (dṛṣṭī) - sight; रूप (rūpa) - form; पराजिता (parājitā) - defeated;]
(Whatever limb indeed he saw of her, the best among Brāhmaṇas then was not pleased there, there his sight (was) defeated by form.)
Whatever part of her the best of Brāhmaṇas saw, he was not pleased there; his gaze was overcome by her beauty. (13-20-72)
देवतेयं गृहस्यास्य शापान्नूनं विरूपिता। अस्याश्च कारणं वेत्तुं न युक्तं सहसा मया ॥१३-२०-७३॥
devateyaṁ gṛhasyāsya śāpānnūnaṁ virūpitā। asyāśca kāraṇaṁ vettuṁ na yuktaṁ sahasā mayā ॥13-20-73॥
[देवता (devatā) - divinity; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); गृहस्य (gṛhasya) - of the house; अस्य (asya) - of this; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; विरूपिता (virūpitā) - deformed; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; च (ca) - and; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; वेत्तुम् (vettum) - to know; न (na) - not; युक्तम् (yuktam) - proper; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Divinity this of the house of this from curse certainly deformed; of her and cause to know not proper suddenly by me.)
This divinity of this house has certainly been deformed by a curse; it is not proper for me to suddenly seek to know the cause of this. (13-20-73)
इति चिन्ताविषक्तस्य तमर्थं ज्ञातुमिच्छतः। व्यगमत्तदहःशेषं मनसा व्याकुलेन तु ॥१३-२०-७४॥
iti cintā-viṣaktasya tam arthaṃ jñātum icchataḥ। vyagamat tad ahaḥ-śeṣaṃ manasā vyākulena tu॥13-20-74॥
[इति (iti) - thus; चिन्ता (cintā) - thought; विषक्तस्य (viṣaktasya) - of the one attached; तम् (tam) - that; अर्थम् (artham) - object; ज्ञातुम् (jñātum) - to know; इच्छतः (icchataḥ) - desiring; व्यगमत् (vyagamat) - passed; तत् (tat) - that; अहःशेषम् (ahaḥ-śeṣam) - the remainder of the day; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; व्याकुलेन (vyākulena) - agitated; तु (tu) - but;]
(Thus, for the one attached to thought, desiring to know that object, that remainder of the day passed with an agitated mind but.)
Thus, as he was absorbed in thought and wished to know that matter, the rest of that day passed for him with an agitated mind. (13-20-74)
अथ सा स्त्री तदोवाच भगवन्पश्य वै रवेः। रूपं सन्ध्याभ्रसंयुक्तं किमुपस्थाप्यतां तव ॥१३-२०-७५॥
atha sā strī tadovāca bhagavanpaśya vai raveḥ। rūpaṃ sandhyābhra-saṃyuktaṃ kim upasthāpyatāṃ tava ॥13-20-75॥
[अथ (atha) - then; सा (sā) - she; स्त्री (strī) - woman; तदा (tadā) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O revered one; पश्य (paśya) - see; वै (vai) - indeed; रवेः (raveḥ) - of the sun; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; सन्ध्या (sandhyā) - twilight; अभ्र (abhra) - cloud; संयुक्तं (saṃyuktaṃ) - joined with; किम् (kim) - what; उपस्थाप्यतां (upasthāpyatāṃ) - should be presented; तव (tava) - for you;]
(Then she, the woman, then said: O revered one, see indeed the form of the sun joined with twilight and cloud; what should be presented for you?)
Then that woman said: "O revered one, look at the form of the sun mingled with twilight and cloud; what should be presented to you?" (13-20-75)
स उवाच तदा तां स्त्रीं स्नानोदकमिहानय। उपासिष्ये ततः सन्ध्यां वाग्यतो नियतेन्द्रियः ॥१३-२०-७६॥
sa uvāca tadā tāṃ strīṃ snānōdakam ihānaya। upāsiṣye tataḥ sandhyāṃ vāgyataḥ niyatendriyaḥ ॥13-20-76॥
[स (sa) - he; उवाच (uvāca) - said; तदा (tadā) - then; तां (tāṃ) - her; स्त्रीं (strīṃ) - woman; स्नानोदकम् (snānōdakam) - bathing water; इह (iha) - here; आनय (ānaya) - bring; उपासिष्ये (upāsiṣye) - I will worship; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सन्ध्यां (sandhyāṃ) - twilight (ritual); वाग्यतः (vāgyataḥ) - with speech restrained; नियतेन्द्रियः (niyatendriyaḥ) - with controlled senses;]
(He said then to her, the woman: "Bring bathing water here." I will worship then the twilight, with speech restrained, with controlled senses. (13-20-76))
He then said to the woman, "Bring bathing water here." After that, I will perform the twilight worship, restraining my speech and controlling my senses. (13-20-76)
