न बिभेति कथं सा स्त्री शापस्य परमद्युतेः। कथं निवृत्तो भगवांस्तद्भवान्प्रब्रवीतु मे ॥१३-२२-१॥
na bibheti kathaṁ sā strī śāpasya paramadyuteḥ। kathaṁ nivṛtto bhagavāṁstadbhavānprabravītu me ॥13-22-1॥
[न (na) - not; बिभेति (bibheti) - fears; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; सा (sā) - she; स्त्री (strī) - woman; शापस्य (śāpasya) - of the curse; परमद्युतेः (paramadyuteḥ) - of the supreme radiance; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - ceased; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O Lord; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you; प्रब्रवीतु (prabravītu) - may speak; मे (me) - to me;]
(Not fears how she woman of the curse of the supreme radiance. How ceased O Lord that you may speak to me (13-22-1))
How does that woman not fear the curse of the supreme radiance? How was it removed, O Lord? Please tell me that. (13-22-1)
भीष्म उवाच॥

अष्टावक्रोऽन्वपृच्छत्तां रूपं विकुरुषे कथम्। न चानृतं ते वक्तव्यं ब्रूहि ब्राह्मणकाम्यया ॥१३-२२-२॥
aṣṭāvakro'nvapṛcchat tāṃ rūpaṃ vikuruṣe katham। na cānṛtaṃ te vaktavyaṃ brūhi brāhmaṇakāmyayā ॥13-22-2॥
[अष्टावक्रः (aṣṭāvakraḥ) - Aṣṭāvakra; (proper name); अन्वपृच्छत् (anvapṛcchat) - asked; inquired; तां (tāṃ) - her; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; appearance; विकुरुषे (vikuruṣe) - you change; you alter; कथम् (katham) - how; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - falsehood; untruth; ते (te) - to you; by you; वक्तव्यम् (vaktavyam) - to be spoken; to be said; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; tell; ब्राह्मणकाम्यया (brāhmaṇakāmyayā) - with desire for brahman; for the sake of brahman;]
(Aṣṭāvakra asked her: "How do you change your form? And untruth is not to be spoken by you; speak for the sake of brahman." (13-22-2))
Aṣṭāvakra asked her, "How do you alter your form? And you must not speak untruth; tell me for the sake of brahman." (13-22-2)

The woman said.
द्यावापृथिवीमात्रैषा काम्या ब्राह्मणसत्तम। शृणुष्वावहितः सर्वं यदिदं सत्यविक्रम ॥१३-२२-३॥
dyāvāpṛthivīmātraiṣā kāmyā brāhmaṇasattama। śṛṇuṣvāvahitaḥ sarvaṃ yadidaṃ satyavikrama ॥13-22-3॥
[द्यावा (dyāvā) - heaven; (dual); पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - earth; मात्र (mātra) - measure; mother; एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); काम्या (kāmyā) - desirable; to be wished for; ब्राह्मणसत्तम (brāhmaṇasattama) - O best of Brāhmaṇas; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - hear; listen; आवहितः (āvahitaḥ) - attentively; with concentration; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; everything; यद् (yad) - that which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सत्यविक्रम (satyavikrama) - O one of true valor;]
(Heaven, earth, measure, this, desirable, O best of Brāhmaṇas; hear attentively all that which this, O one of true valor.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, this (rite) is as great as heaven and earth, and is desirable; O one of true valor, listen attentively to all this. (13-22-3)
उत्तरां मां दिशं विद्धि दृष्टं स्त्रीचापलं च ते। अव्युत्थानेन ते लोका जिताः सत्यपराक्रम ॥१३-२२-४॥
uttarāṃ māṃ diśaṃ viddhi dṛṣṭaṃ strī-cāpalaṃ ca te। avyutthānena te lokā jitāḥ satya-parākrama ॥13-22-4॥
[उत्तरां (uttarām) - northern; (direction); मां (mām) - me; दिशं (diśam) - direction; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; स्त्रीचापलं (strī-cāpalaṃ) - woman's fickleness; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; अव्युत्थानेन (avyutthānena) - by not rising (from seat); ते (te) - your; लोका (lokā) - worlds; जिताः (jitāḥ) - conquered; सत्यपराक्रम (satya-parākrama) - O truly valiant one;]
(Know me as the northern direction; seen is the fickleness of women and your (own); by your not rising, your worlds are conquered, O truly valiant one.)
Know me as the northern direction; you have seen the fickleness of women and your own. By your not rising, your worlds have been conquered, O truly valiant one. (13-22-4)
जिज्ञासेयं प्रयुक्ता मे स्थिरीकर्तुं तवानघ। स्थविराणामपि स्त्रीणां बाधते मैथुनज्वरः ॥१३-२२-५॥
jijñāseyaṁ prayuktā me sthirīkartuṁ tavānagha। sthavirāṇām api strīṇāṁ bādhate maithunajvaraḥ ॥13-22-5॥
[जिज्ञासेयं (jijñāseyam) - I wish to know; प्रयुक्ता (prayuktā) - prompted; मे (me) - by me; स्थिरीकर्तुं (sthirīkartuṁ) - to make firm; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; स्थविराणाम् (sthavirāṇām) - of the old; अपि (api) - even; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; बाधते (bādhate) - afflicts; मैथुनज्वरः (maithunajvaraḥ) - the fever of sexual desire;]
(I wish to know, prompted by me, to make firm your (knowledge), O sinless one; even among old women, the fever of sexual desire afflicts.)
O sinless one, prompted by my desire to understand and to clarify your knowledge, I ask: even old women are afflicted by the fever of sexual desire. (13-22-5)
तुष्टः पितामहस्तेऽद्य तथा देवाः सवासवाः। स त्वं येन च कार्येण सम्प्राप्तो भगवानिह ॥१३-२२-६॥
tuṣṭaḥ pitāmahas te 'dya tathā devāḥ savāsavāḥ। sa tvaṃ yena ca kāryeṇa samprāpto bhagavān iha ॥13-22-6॥
[तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; ते (te) - to you; अद्य (adya) - today; तथा (tathā) - also; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सवासवाः (savāsavāḥ) - with Indra; स (sa) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; येन (yena) - by which; च (ca) - and; कार्येण (kāryeṇa) - by the task; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - arrived; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; इह (iha) - here;]
(Pleased grandfather to you today also gods with Indra; he you by which and by the task arrived the Lord here.)
Today, your grandfather is pleased with you, as are the gods along with Indra. So, for whatever purpose you have come here, the Lord is present. (13-22-6)
प्रेषितस्तेन विप्रेण कन्यापित्रा द्विजर्षभ। तवोपदेशं कर्तुं वै तच्च सर्वं कृतं मया ॥१३-२२-७॥
preṣitastena vipreṇa kanyā-pitrā dvija-ṛṣabha। tavo-upadeśaṃ kartuṃ vai tac ca sarvaṃ kṛtaṃ mayā ॥13-22-7॥
[प्रेषितः (preṣitaḥ) - sent; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the brāhmaṇa; कन्या (kanyā) - daughter; पित्रा (pitrā) - by the father; द्विजर्षभ (dvija-ṛṣabha) - O best of twice-born; तव (tava) - your; उपदेशं (upadeśam) - instruction; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कृतं (kṛtam) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Sent by him, by the brāhmaṇa, by the daughter's father, O best of twice-born; your instruction to do indeed, that and all done by me.)
O best of the twice-born, I was sent by that brāhmaṇa, the girl's father, to carry out your instruction; all that has indeed been done by me. (13-22-7)
क्षेमी गमिष्यसि गृहाञ्श्रमश्च न भविष्यति। कन्यां प्राप्स्यसि तां विप्र पुत्रिणी च भविष्यति ॥१३-२२-८॥
kṣemī gamiṣyasi gṛhāñśramaś ca na bhaviṣyati। kanyāṃ prāpsyasi tāṃ vipra putriṇī ca bhaviṣyati ॥13-22-8॥
[क्षेमी (kṣemī) - secure; at ease; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go; गृहान् (gṛhān) - to home(s); श्रमः (śramaḥ) - fatigue; labor; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; girl; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; तां (tāṃ) - her; विप्र (vipra) - brāhmaṇa; sage; पुत्रिणी (putriṇī) - having a son; च (ca) - and; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Secure you will go to home, fatigue and not will be. Maiden you will obtain, her brāhmaṇa having a son and will be. (13-22-8))
You will go home securely, and there will be no fatigue. You will obtain a maiden, and she will become the wife of a brāhmaṇa and bear a son. (13-22-8)
काम्यया पृष्टवांस्त्वं मां ततो व्याहृतमुत्तरम्। अनतिक्रमणीयैषा कृत्स्नैर्लोकैस्त्रिभिः सदा ॥१३-२२-९॥
kāmyayā pṛṣṭavāṁstvaṁ māṁ tato vyāhṛtamuttaram। anatikramaṇīyaiṣā kṛtsnairlokaistribhiḥ sadā ॥13-22-9॥
[काम्यया (kāmyayā) - by desire; by wish; पृष्टवान् (pṛṣṭavān) - having asked; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; माम् (mām) - me; ततः (tataḥ) - then; व्याहृतम् (vyāhṛtam) - spoken; uttered; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - answer; अनतिक्रमणीया (anatikramaṇīyā) - not to be transgressed; एषा (eṣā) - this; कृत्स्नैः (kṛtsnaiḥ) - by all; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - worlds; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - three; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(By desire having asked you me, then spoken answer; not to be transgressed this by all worlds three always.)
You have asked me out of desire, and then I have spoken this answer; this is not to be transgressed by all the three worlds at any time. (13-22-9)
गच्छस्व सुकृतं कृत्वा किं वान्यच्छ्रोतुमिच्छसि। यावद्ब्रवीमि विप्रर्षे अष्टावक्र यथातथम् ॥१३-२२-१०॥
gacchasva sukṛtaṃ kṛtvā kiṃ vā anyat śrotum icchasi। yāvat bravīmi viprarṣe aṣṭāvakra yathā tatham ॥13-22-10॥
[गच्छस्व (gacchasva) - go; (imperative, second person singular); सुकृतं (sukṛtam) - good deed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; किं (kiṃ) - what; वा (vā) - or; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; अष्टावक्र (aṣṭāvakra) - Aṣṭāvakra; यथा (yathā) - as; तथम् (tatham) - so; thus;]
(Go, having done a good deed; what else do you wish to hear? As much as I speak, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, O Aṣṭāvakra, as it is, so.)
Go after performing a good deed; what else do you wish to hear? O sage among Brāhmaṇas, O Aṣṭāvakra, I have spoken as it is. (13-22-10)
ऋषिणा प्रसादिता चास्मि तव हेतोर्द्विजर्षभ। तस्य संमाननार्थं मे त्वयि वाक्यं प्रभाषितम् ॥१३-२२-११॥
ṛṣiṇā prasāditā cāsmi tava hetor dvijarṣabha। tasya saṁmānanārthaṁ me tvayi vākyaṁ prabhāṣitam ॥13-22-11॥
[ऋषिणा (ṛṣiṇā) - by the sage; प्रसादिता (prasāditā) - favored; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तव (tava) - for your; हेतोः (hetoḥ) - because of the reason; द्विजर्षभ (dvijarṣabha) - O best of the twice-born; तस्य (tasya) - his; संमाननार्थं (saṁmānanārthaṁ) - for the purpose of honoring; मे (me) - by me; त्वयि (tvayi) - to you; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - speech; प्रभाषितम् (prabhāṣitam) - has been spoken;]
(By the sage favored and I am for your reason, O best of the twice-born; for his honoring by me to you speech has been spoken.)
O best of the twice-born, I have been favored by the sage because of you; in order to honor him, I have spoken these words to you. (13-22-11)
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्याः स विप्रः प्राञ्जलिः स्थितः। अनुज्ञातस्तया चापि स्वगृहं पुनराव्रजत् ॥१३-२२-१२॥
śrutvā tu vacanaṃ tasyāḥ sa vipraḥ prāñjaliḥ sthitaḥ। anujñātastayā cāpi svagṛhaṃ punarāvrajat ॥13-22-12॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; स (sa) - he; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; तया (tayā) - by her; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; स्वगृहं (svagṛham) - own house; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; आव्रजत् (āvrajat) - returned;]
(Having heard but the speech of her, he, the brāhmaṇa, with joined palms, stood. Permitted by her and also, to his own house again returned.)
But having heard her words, the brāhmaṇa stood with joined palms. Permitted by her, he also returned again to his own house. (13-22-12)
गृहमागम्य विश्रान्तः स्वजनं प्रतिपूज्य च। अभ्यगच्छत तं विप्रं न्यायतः कुरुनन्दन ॥१३-२२-१३॥
gṛham āgamya viśrāntaḥ svajanaṃ pratipūjya ca। abhyagacchata taṃ vipraṃ nyāyataḥ kurunandana ॥13-22-13॥
[गृहम् (gṛham) - house; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; विश्रान्तः (viśrāntaḥ) - having rested; स्वजनम् (svajanam) - own people; प्रतिपूज्य (pratipūjya) - having duly honored; च (ca) - and; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - he approached; तम् (tam) - him; विप्रम् (vipram) - brāhmaṇa; न्यायतः (nyāyataḥ) - properly; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O delight of the Kurus;]
(Having come to the house, having rested, having duly honored his own people and, O delight of the Kurus, he properly approached that brāhmaṇa.)
O delight of the Kurus, after coming home, resting, and duly honoring his own people, he then properly approached that brāhmaṇa. (13-22-13)
पृष्टश्च तेन विप्रेण दृष्टं त्वेतन्निदर्शनम्। प्राह विप्रं तदा विप्रः सुप्रीतेनान्तरात्मना ॥१३-२२-१४॥
pṛṣṭaś ca tena vipreṇa dṛṣṭaṃ tv etan nidarśanam। prāha vipraṃ tadā vipraḥ suprītenāntarātmanā ॥13-22-14॥
[पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; च (ca) - and; तेन (tena) - by him; विप्रेण (vipreṇa) - by the brāhmaṇa; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; त्व (tv) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - example; प्राह (prāha) - said; विप्रं (vipram) - to the brāhmaṇa; तदा (tadā) - then; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; सुप्रीतेन (suprītena) - with great satisfaction; अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - with the inner self;]
(Asked and by him, by the brāhmaṇa, seen indeed this example. Said to the brāhmaṇa then the brāhmaṇa with great satisfaction with the inner self.)
Having been asked by him, the brāhmaṇa, having seen this example, the brāhmaṇa then, with great satisfaction in his heart, spoke to the brāhmaṇa. (13-22-14)
भवताहमनुज्ञातः प्रस्थितो गन्धमादनम्। तस्य चोत्तरतो देशे दृष्टं तद्दैवतं महत् ॥१३-२२-१५॥
bhavatāhamanujñātaḥ prasthito gandhamādanam। tasya cottarato deśe dṛṣṭaṃ taddaivataṃ mahat ॥13-22-15॥
[भवत (bhavata) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; प्रस्थितः (prasthitaḥ) - departed; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamadana; तस्य (tasya) - of it; च (ca) - and; उत्तरतः (uttarataḥ) - to the north; देशे (deśe) - in the region; दृष्टम् (dṛṣṭam) - seen; तत् (tat) - that; दैवतं (daivatam) - divine being; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(By you I permitted departed Gandhamadana. Of it and to the north in the region seen that divine being great.)
Having been permitted by you, I set out for Gandhamadana. In the region to its north, I saw that great divine being. (13-22-15)
तया चाहमनुज्ञातो भवांश्चापि प्रकीर्तितः। श्रावितश्चापि तद्वाक्यं गृहमभ्यागतः प्रभो ॥१३-२२-१६॥
tayā cāhamanujñāto bhavāṁścāpi prakīrtitaḥ। śrāvitaścāpi tadvākyaṁ gṛhamabhyāgataḥ prabho ॥13-22-16॥
[तया (tayā) - by her; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; भवान् (bhavān) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रकीर्तितः (prakīrtitaḥ) - mentioned; श्रावितः (śrāvitaḥ) - made to be heard; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṁ) - statement; गृहम् (gṛham) - home; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - arrived; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(By her and I permitted, you also mentioned, made to be heard and also that statement, home arrived, O lord;)
O lord, by her I was permitted, and you were also mentioned; that statement was made to be heard, and I have arrived home. (13-22-16)
तमुवाच ततो विप्रः प्रतिगृह्णीष्व मे सुताम्। नक्षत्रतिथिसंयोगे पात्रं हि परमं भवान् ॥१३-२२-१७॥
tamuvāca tato vipraḥ pratigṛhṇīṣva me sutām। nakṣatratithisaṃyoge pātraṃ hi paramaṃ bhavān ॥13-22-17॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - brāhmaṇa; प्रतिगृह्णीष्व (pratigṛhṇīṣva) - accept; मे (me) - my; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter; नक्षत्रतिथिसंयोगे (nakṣatratithisaṃyoge) - at the conjunction of nakṣatra and tithi; पात्रम् (pātram) - worthy person; हि (hi) - indeed; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(Him said then the brāhmaṇa: Accept my daughter at the conjunction of nakṣatra and tithi; you indeed are the supreme worthy person.)
Then the brāhmaṇa said to him: "Accept my daughter at the auspicious conjunction of nakṣatra and tithi, for you are indeed the most worthy person." (13-22-17)
भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhishma said.
अष्टावक्रस्तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रतिगृह्य च तां प्रभो। कन्यां परमधर्मात्मा प्रीतिमांश्चाभवत्तदा ॥१३-२२-१८॥
aṣṭāvakras tathety uktvā pratigṛhya ca tāṃ prabho। kanyāṃ paramadharmātmā prītimāṃś cābhavat tadā ॥13-22-18॥
[अष्टावक्रः (aṣṭāvakraḥ) - Aṣṭāvakra; (the sage's name); तथेत्युक्त्वा (tathety uktvā) - having said 'so be it'; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; च (ca) - and; ताम् (tām) - her; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord; कन्याम् (kanyām) - the maiden; परमधर्मात्मा (paramadharmātmā) - of supreme righteous soul; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of joy; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Aṣṭāvakra, having said 'so be it', having accepted her, and O lord, the maiden, the one of supreme righteous soul, became full of joy then.)
Aṣṭāvakra, having said 'so be it' and having accepted the maiden, O lord, the supremely righteous one then became full of joy. (13-22-18)
कन्यां तां प्रतिगृह्यैव भार्यां परमशोभनाम्। उवास मुदितस्तत्र आश्रमे स्वे गतज्वरः ॥१३-२२-१९॥
kanyāṃ tāṃ pratigṛhyaiva bhāryāṃ paramaśobhanām। uvāsa muditastatra āśrame sve gatajvaraḥ ॥13-22-19॥
[कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden (accusative singular); तां (tāṃ) - her; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; एव (eva) - indeed; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife (accusative singular); परमशोभनाम् (paramaśobhanām) - most beautiful; उवास (uvāsa) - dwelt; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - gladdened; तत्र (tatra) - there; आश्रमे (āśrame) - in the hermitage; स्वे (sve) - his own; गतज्वरः (gatajvaraḥ) - free from fever;]
(Having indeed accepted her, the maiden, as his wife, most beautiful, he dwelt, gladdened, there, in his own hermitage, free from fever.)
Having accepted her, the maiden, as his most beautiful wife, he lived happily there in his own hermitage, free from all distress. (13-22-19)
