Bhishma said.
एवमुक्तो मतङ्गस्तु संशितात्मा यतव्रतः। अतिष्ठदेकपादेन वर्षाणां शतमच्युत ॥१३-२९-१॥
evamukto mataṅgastu saṁśitātmā yatavrataḥ। atiṣṭhadekapādena varṣāṇāṁ śatamacyuta ॥13-29-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this manner; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; spoken to; मतङ्गः (mataṅgaḥ) - Matanga; (proper name); तु (tu) - but; however; संशितात्मा (saṁśitātmā) - one with resolute mind; firm-souled; यतव्रतः (yatavrataḥ) - one who has undertaken vows; disciplined in vows; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - stood; remained; एकपादेन (ekapādena) - on one foot; with one foot; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - of years; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; O infallible one;]
(Thus addressed, Matanga, but firm-souled, disciplined in vows, stood on one foot for a hundred years, O Acyuta.)
Thus addressed, Matanga, whose mind was resolute and who was firm in his vows, stood on one foot for a hundred years, O Acyuta. (13-29-1)
तमुवाच ततः शक्रः पुनरेव महायशाः। मतङ्ग परमं स्थानं प्रार्थयन्नतिदुर्लभम् ॥१३-२९-२॥
tam uvāca tataḥ śakraḥ punar eva mahā-yaśāḥ। mataṅga paramaṃ sthānaṃ prārthayan atidurlabham ॥13-29-2॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; महायशाः (mahā-yaśāḥ) - of great fame; मतङ्ग (mataṅga) - O Mataṅga; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; प्रार्थयन् (prārthayan) - requesting; अतिदुर्लभम् (atidurlabham) - very difficult to obtain;]
(Him said then Śakra again indeed of great fame: "O Mataṅga, the supreme place, requesting, very difficult to obtain." (13-29-2))
Then Śakra, the greatly renowned one, again spoke to him: "O Mataṅga, you are requesting the supreme place, which is very difficult to obtain." (13-29-2)
मा कृथाः साहसं पुत्र नैष धर्मपथस्तव। अप्राप्यं प्रार्थयानो हि नचिराद्विनशिष्यसि ॥१३-२९-३॥
mā kṛthāḥ sāhasaṃ putra naiṣa dharmapathastava। aprāpyaṃ prārthayāno hi nacirād vinaśiṣyasi ॥13-29-3॥
[मा (mā) - do not; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - perform; साहसं (sāhasaṃ) - rash act; पुत्र (putra) - son; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; धर्मपथः (dharmapathaḥ) - path of righteousness; तव (tava) - your; अप्राप्यं (aprāpyaṃ) - unattainable; प्रार्थयानः (prārthayānaḥ) - desiring; हि (hi) - indeed; नचिरात् (nacirāt) - soon; विनशिष्यसि (vinaśiṣyasi) - you will perish;]
(Do not perform rash act, son; this is not your path of righteousness. Desiring the unattainable, indeed, you will soon perish. (13-29-3))
Do not act rashly, my son; this is not the path of righteousness for you. If you desire what cannot be attained, you will soon perish. (13-29-3)
मतङ्ग परमं स्थानं वार्यमाणो मया सकृत्। चिकीर्षस्येव तपसा सर्वथा न भविष्यसि ॥१३-२९-४॥
mataṅga paramaṃ sthānaṃ vāryamāṇo mayā sakṛt। cikīrṣasyeva tapasā sarvathā na bhaviṣyasi ॥13-29-4॥
[मतङ्ग (mataṅga) - O Matanga; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; स्थानं (sthānaṃ) - state; वार्यमाणः (vāryamāṇaḥ) - being restrained; मया (mayā) - by me; सकृत् (sakṛt) - once; चिकीर्षस्य (cikīrṣasya) - of one desiring to do; इव (iva) - as if; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; न (na) - not; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become;]
(O Matanga, the supreme state, being restrained by me once, of one desiring to do, as if by austerity, in every way, not you will become.)
O Matanga, you will not in any way attain the supreme state by austerity, being restrained by me even once, as one desiring to act. (13-29-4)
तिर्यग्योनिगतः सर्वो मानुष्यं यदि गच्छति। स जायते पुल्कसो वा चण्डालो वा कदाचन ॥१३-२९-५॥
tiryagyonigataḥ sarvo mānuṣyaṃ yadi gacchati। sa jāyate pulkaso vā caṇḍālo vā kadācana ॥13-29-5॥
[तिर्यग्योनिगतः (tiryagyonigataḥ) - gone into the womb of animals; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - every; all; मानुष्यं (mānuṣyam) - human birth; यदि (yadi) - if; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; attains; सः (saḥ) - he; जायते (jāyate) - is born; पुल्कसः (pulkasaḥ) - a Pulkasa (outcaste); वा (vā) - or; चण्डालः (caṇḍālaḥ) - a Caṇḍāla (outcaste); वा (vā) - or; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; ever;]
(Gone into the womb of animals, every (being), if attains human birth, he is born as a Pulkasa or Caṇḍāla or at any time.)
Whoever has entered the animal womb, if he attains human birth, he is born as a Pulkasa or a Caṇḍāla at some time. (13-29-5)
पुंश्चलः पापयोनिर्वा यः कश्चिदिह लक्ष्यते। स तस्यामेव सुचिरं मतङ्ग परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-६॥
puṁścalaḥ pāpayonirvā yaḥ kaścid iha lakṣyate। sa tasyām eva suciraṁ mataṅga parivartate ॥13-29-6॥
[पुंश्चलः (puṁścalaḥ) - debauched man; पापयोनिः (pāpayoniḥ) - one of sinful birth; वा (vā) - or; यः (yaḥ) - who; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; इह (iha) - here; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is seen; सः (saḥ) - he; तस्याम् (tasyām) - in her; एव (eva) - only; सुचिरम् (suciram) - for a long time; मतङ्गः (mataṅgaḥ) - Matanga; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - remains;]
(A debauched man, or one of sinful birth, whoever here is seen, he in her only for a long time Matanga remains.)
Whoever is seen here as a debauched man or of sinful birth, he, like Matanga, remains with her for a long time. (13-29-6)
ततो दशगुणे काले लभते शूद्रतामपि। शूद्रयोनावपि ततो बहुशः परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-७॥
tato daśaguṇe kāle labhate śūdratām api। śūdrayonāv api tato bahuśaḥ parivartate ॥13-29-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; दशगुणे (daśaguṇe) - tenfold; in ten times; काले (kāle) - in time; in the period; लभते (labhate) - obtains; attains; शूद्रताम् (śūdratām) - the state of being a Śūdra; Śūdra-hood; अपि (api) - even; also; शूद्रयोनौ (śūdrayonau) - in the womb of a Śūdra; in a Śūdra birth; अपि (api) - even; also; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; repeatedly; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - wanders; transmigrates; moves about;]
(Then, in tenfold time, attains even the state of being a Śūdra; even in the womb of a Śūdra, then, many times, transmigrates.)
Then, after ten times the period, one attains even the state of a Śūdra; even in the womb of a Śūdra, then, one is repeatedly reborn. (13-29-7)
ततस्त्रिंशद्गुणे काले लभते वैश्यतामपि। वैश्यतायां चिरं कालं तत्रैव परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-८॥
tatastṛṃśadguṇe kāle labhate vaiśyatāmapi। vaiśyatāyāṃ ciraṃ kālaṃ tatraiva parivartate ॥13-29-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्रिंशद्गुणे (tṛṃśadguṇe) - in thirtyfold; काले (kāle) - in time; लभते (labhate) - obtains; वैश्यताम् (vaiśyatām) - the state of a Vaiśya; अपि (api) - also; वैश्यतायाम् (vaiśyatāyām) - in the state of a Vaiśya; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long; कालम् (kālam) - time; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - remains;]
(Then, in thirtyfold time, obtains the state of a Vaiśya also. In the state of a Vaiśya, for a long time, there indeed remains.)
Then, after thirty times that period, one attains the state of a Vaiśya. Remaining in the Vaiśya state, one stays there for a long time. (13-29-8)
ततः षष्टिगुणे काले राजन्यो नाम जायते। राजन्यत्वे चिरं कालं तत्रैव परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-९॥
tataḥ ṣaṣṭiguṇe kāle rājanyo nāma jāyate. rājanyatve ciraṃ kālaṃ tatraiva parivartate ॥13-29-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; षष्टिगुणे (ṣaṣṭiguṇe) - in the sixtieth multiple; काले (kāle) - in time; राजन्यः (rājanyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; नाम (nāma) - named; जायते (jāyate) - is born; राजन्यत्वे (rājanyatve) - in the state of kṣatriya; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; कालम् (kālam) - time; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - remains; revolves;]
(Then, in the sixtieth multiple of time, a kṣatriya named is born. In the state of kṣatriya, for a long time, time there itself remains. (13-29-9))
Then, after sixty cycles of time, a kṣatriya is born. In the kṣatriya state, for a long period, time continues there itself. (13-29-9)
ततः षष्टिगुणे काले लभते ब्रह्मबन्धुताम्। ब्रह्मबन्धुश्चिरं कालं तत्रैव परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-१०॥
tataḥ ṣaṣṭiguṇe kāle labhate brahmabandhutām। brahmabandhuś ciraṃ kālaṃ tatraiva parivartate ॥13-29-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; षष्टिगुणे (ṣaṣṭiguṇe) - sixtyfold; multiplied by sixty; काले (kāle) - in time; in the period; लभते (labhate) - obtains; attains; ब्रह्मबन्धुताम् (brahmabandhutām) - state of being a brahmabandhu; status of a nominal Brāhmaṇa; ब्रह्मबन्धुः (brahmabandhuḥ) - brahmabandhu; nominal Brāhmaṇa; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; period; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - remains; revolves; stays;]
(Then, in a time multiplied by sixty, he attains the state of being a brahmabandhu; the brahmabandhu remains there itself for a long time.)
Then, after a period sixty times as long, he attains the status of a nominal Brāhmaṇa; and the brahmabandhu remains there itself for a long time. (13-29-10)
ततस्तु द्विशते काले लभते काण्डपृष्ठताम्। काण्डपृष्ठश्चिरं कालं तत्रैव परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-११॥
tatastu dviśate kāle labhate kāṇḍapṛṣṭhatām। kāṇḍapṛṣṭhaś ciraṃ kālaṃ tatraiva parivartate ॥13-29-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; तु (tu) - but; indeed; द्विशते (dviśate) - two hundred; काले (kāle) - in time; in the period; लभते (labhate) - obtains; attains; काण्डपृष्ठताम् (kāṇḍapṛṣṭhatām) - state of being a kāṇḍapṛṣṭha (a kind of insect); काण्डपृष्ठः (kāṇḍapṛṣṭhaḥ) - the kāṇḍapṛṣṭha; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; period; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - indeed; just; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - moves about; turns; revolves;]
(Then indeed, in two hundred periods, attains the state of kāṇḍapṛṣṭha; the kāṇḍapṛṣṭha for a long time period there indeed moves about ॥13-29-11॥)
Then, after two hundred cycles, it attains the state of a kāṇḍapṛṣṭha insect; as a kāṇḍapṛṣṭha, it continues to exist there for a long time. (13-29-11)
ततस्तु त्रिशते काले लभते द्विजतामपि। तां च प्राप्य चिरं कालं तत्रैव परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-१२॥
tatastu triśate kāle labhate dvijatām api। tāṃ ca prāpya ciraṃ kālaṃ tatraiva parivartate ॥13-29-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; तु (tu) - but; indeed; त्रिशते (triśate) - three hundred; काले (kāle) - in time; in a period; लभते (labhate) - obtains; attains; द्विजताम् (dvijatām) - the state of twice-born; brahminhood; अपि (api) - also; even; ताम् (tām) - that (state); च (ca) - and; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; having reached; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; कालम् (kālam) - time; period; तत्र (tatra) - there; एव (eva) - only; just; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - revolves; transmigrates; changes;]
(Then indeed, in three hundred periods, one attains even the state of twice-born; having obtained that, and for a long time, in that very place, one revolves.)
Then, after three hundred cycles, one attains even the state of a twice-born; having reached that state, one continues to transmigrate there for a long time. (13-29-12)
ततश्चतुःशते काले श्रोत्रियो नाम जायते। श्रोत्रियत्वे चिरं कालं तत्रैव परिवर्तते ॥१३-२९-१३॥
tataś catuḥśate kāle śrotriyo nāma jāyate। śrotriyatve ciraṃ kālaṃ tatraiva parivartate ॥13-29-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - from that; then; चतुःशते (catuḥśate) - in four hundred; in four hundreds; काले (kāle) - in time; in the period; श्रोत्रियः (śrotriyaḥ) - a Vedic scholar; one learned in the Vedas; नाम (nāma) - named; called; जायते (jāyate) - is born; arises; श्रोत्रियत्वे (śrotriyatve) - in the state of being a śrotriya; in śrotriyahood; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; long; कालम् (kālam) - time; period; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - right there; in that very place; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - remains; revolves; stays;]
(Then, in four hundred (years) time, a Vedic scholar named is born. In the state of being a śrotriya, for a long time, the time remains right there. (13-29-13))
Then, after four hundred years, a person called a śrotriya (Vedic scholar) is born. In that state of being a śrotriya, he remains there for a long time. (13-29-13)
तदैव क्रोधहर्षौ च कामद्वेषौ च पुत्रक। अतिमानातिवादौ तमाविशन्ति द्विजाधमम् ॥१३-२९-१४॥
tadaiva krodhaharṣau ca kāmadveṣau ca putraka। atimānātivādau tam āviśanti dvijādhamam ॥13-29-14॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; हर्षौ (harṣau) - joy; delight; (dual); च (ca) - and; काम (kāma) - desire; द्वेषौ (dveṣau) - hatred; aversion; (dual); च (ca) - and; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; अतिमान (atimāna) - excessive pride; अतिवादौ (ativādau) - excessive speech; (dual); तम् (tam) - him; आविशन्ति (āviśanti) - enter; द्विजाधमम् (dvijādhamam) - lowest of the twice-born;]
(Then indeed, anger and joy and desire and hatred, O son, excessive pride and excessive speech enter him, the lowest of the twice-born.)
At that very moment, O son, anger and joy, desire and hatred, excessive pride and excessive speech enter into him, the lowest among the twice-born. (13-29-14)
तांश्चेज्जयति शत्रून्स तदा प्राप्नोति सद्गतिम्। अथ ते वै जयन्त्येनं तालाग्रादिव पात्यते ॥१३-२९-१५॥
tāṁś cec jayati śatrūn sa tadā prāpnoti sadgatim। atha te vai jayanty enaṁ tālāgrād iva pātyate ॥13-29-15॥
[तांश् (tāṁś) - those (them); चेत् (cet) - if; जयति (jayati) - conquers; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; सः (saḥ) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; सद्गतिम् (sadgatim) - good state; अथ (atha) - but; ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; जयन्ति (jayanti) - conquer; एनम् (enam) - him; तालाग्रात् (tālāgrāt) - from the top of a palm tree; इव (iva) - like; पात्यते (pātyate) - is thrown down;]
(If he conquers those enemies, then he attains a good state. But if they indeed conquer him, he is thrown down like (one) from the top of a palm tree. (13-29-15))
If he conquers those enemies, then he attains a good state. But if they conquer him, he is cast down like someone from the top of a palm tree. (13-29-15)
मतङ्ग सम्प्रधार्यैतद्यदहं त्वामचूचुदम्। वृणीष्व काममन्यं त्वं ब्राह्मण्यं हि सुदुर्लभम् ॥१३-२९-१६॥
mataṅga sampradhāryaitadyadahaṃ tvāmacūcudam। vṛṇīṣva kāmamanyaṃ tvaṃ brāhmaṇyaṃ hi sudurlabham ॥13-29-16॥
[मतङ्ग (mataṅga) - O Mataṅga; सम्प्रधार्य (sampradhārya) - having fully considered; एतत् (etat) - this; यत् (yat) - that which; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अचूचुदम् (acūcudam) - have told; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyaṃ) - Brahminhood; हि (hi) - indeed; सुदुर्लभम् (sudurlabham) - very difficult to obtain;]
(O Mataṅga, having fully considered this which I have told you, choose another desire; Brahminhood indeed is very difficult to obtain.)
O Mataṅga, after carefully considering what I have told you, choose another boon; for Brahminhood is indeed extremely difficult to attain. (13-29-16)
