एवमुक्तो मतङ्गस्तु भृशं शोकपरायणः। अतिष्ठत गयां गत्वा सोऽङ्गुष्ठेन शतं समाः ॥१३-३०-१॥
evam-ukto mataṅgas tu bhṛśaṃ śoka-parāyaṇaḥ। atiṣṭhata gayāṃ gatvā so-'ṅguṣṭhena śataṃ samāḥ ॥13-30-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; मतङ्गः (mataṅgaḥ) - Matanga; तु (tu) - but; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; शोकपरायणः (śoka-parāyaṇaḥ) - absorbed in grief; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - remained; गयाम् (gayām) - at Gaya; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; सः (saḥ) - he; अङ्गुष्ठेन (aṅguṣṭhena) - with the thumb; शतम् (śatam) - a hundred; समाः (samāḥ) - years;]
(Thus addressed, Matanga but exceedingly absorbed in grief, remained at Gaya having gone, he with the thumb, a hundred years.)
Thus addressed, Matanga, deeply absorbed in grief, went to Gaya and remained there, standing on his thumb, for a hundred years. (13-30-1)
सुदुष्करं वहन्योगं कृशो धमनिसन्ततः। त्वगस्थिभूतो धर्मात्मा स पपातेति नः श्रुतम् ॥१३-३०-२॥
suduṣkaraṃ vahanyogaṃ kṛśo dhamanisantataḥ. tvag-asthi-bhūto dharmātmā sa papāteti naḥ śrutam ॥13-30-2॥
[सुदुष्करं (suduṣkaraṃ) - very difficult; वहन्योगं (vahanyogaṃ) - fit for bearing (carrying); कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated; धमनिसन्ततः (dhamanisantataḥ) - consisting of a network of veins; त्वगस्थिभूतः (tvag-asthi-bhūtaḥ) - reduced to skin and bone; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; सः (saḥ) - he; पपात (papāta) - fell; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard;]
(Very difficult fit for bearing, emaciated, consisting of a network of veins, reduced to skin and bone, righteous-souled, he fell, thus to us has been heard.)
We have heard that the righteous-souled one, emaciated, reduced to skin and bone, with only a network of veins, fell while enduring what was very difficult to bear. (13-30-2)
तं पतन्तमभिद्रुत्य परिजग्राह वासवः। वराणामीश्वरो दाता सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥१३-३०-३॥
taṃ patantam abhidrutya parijagrāha vāsavaḥ। varāṇām īśvaro dātā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ॥13-30-3॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; पतन्तम् (patantam) - falling; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed towards; परिजग्राह (parijagrāha) - seized; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; वराणाम् (varāṇām) - of boons; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the lord; दाता (dātā) - giver; सर्वभूतहिते (sarvabhūtahite) - in the welfare of all beings; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged;]
(Him falling having rushed towards seized Indra. Of boons the lord giver in the welfare of all beings engaged.)
Indra, having rushed towards him as he was falling, seized him. The lord, the giver of boons, is engaged in the welfare of all beings. (13-30-3)
शक्र उवाच॥

मतङ्ग ब्राह्मणत्वं ते संवृतं परिपन्थिभिः। पूजयन्सुखमाप्नोति दुःखमाप्नोत्यपूजयन् ॥१३-३०-४॥
mataṅga brāhmaṇatvaṃ te saṃvṛtaṃ paripanthibhiḥ। pūjayan sukham āpnoti duḥkham āpnoty apūjayan ॥13-30-4॥
[मतङ्ग (mataṅga) - O Mataṅga; ब्राह्मणत्वं (brāhmaṇatvam) - brāhmaṇa-hood; ते (te) - your; संवृतं (saṃvṛtam) - covered; परिपन्थिभिः (paripanthibhiḥ) - by adversaries; पूजयन् (pūjayan) - honouring; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - not honouring;]
(O Mataṅga, your brāhmaṇa-hood is covered by adversaries; honouring attains happiness, not honouring attains suffering.)
O Mataṅga, your status as a brāhmaṇa is concealed by adversaries; one who honours attains happiness, while one who does not honour attains suffering. (13-30-4)
ब्राह्मणे सर्वभूतानां योगक्षेमः समाहितः। ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽनुतृप्यन्ति पितरो देवतास्तथा ॥१३-३०-५॥
brāhmaṇe sarvabhūtānāṃ yogakṣemaḥ samāhitaḥ। brāhmaṇebhyo'nutṛpyanti pitaro devatāstathā ॥13-30-5॥
[ब्राह्मणे (brāhmaṇe) - in the Brāhmaṇa; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; योगक्षेमः (yogakṣemaḥ) - acquisition and preservation; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - established; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; अनुतृप्यन्ति (anutṛpyanti) - do not become satisfied; पितरः (pitaro) - the ancestors; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(In the Brāhmaṇa, the acquisition and preservation of all beings is established. The ancestors and the deities likewise do not become satisfied with the Brāhmaṇas.)
In the Brāhmaṇa, the welfare and sustenance of all beings is established. Yet, the ancestors and the deities, likewise, are never fully satisfied with the Brāhmaṇas. (13-30-5)
ब्राह्मणः सर्वभूतानां मतङ्ग पर उच्यते। ब्राह्मणः कुरुते तद्धि यथा यद्यच्च वाञ्छति ॥१३-३०-६॥
brāhmaṇaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ mataṅga para ucyate। brāhmaṇaḥ kurute taddhi yathā yadyacca vāñchati ॥13-30-6॥
[ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; मतङ्ग (mataṅga) - mataṅga; (proper name or 'elephant') पर (para) - supreme; transcendent; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; कुरुते (kurute) - does; makes; तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; यथा (yathā) - as; in whatever manner; यद्यत् (yadyat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; वाञ्छति (vāñchati) - desires; wishes;]
(brāhmaṇa; of all beings; mataṅga; supreme; is called; brāhmaṇa; does; that; indeed; as; whatever; and; desires; ॥13-30-6॥)
The brāhmaṇa is called the supreme among all beings, O Mataṅga. The brāhmaṇa indeed does that, as and whatever he desires. (13-30-6)
बह्वीस्तु संसरन्योनीर्जायमानः पुनः पुनः। पर्याये तात कस्मिंश्चिद्ब्राह्मण्यमिह विन्दति ॥१३-३०-७॥
bahvīs tu saṁsaraṇyonīr jāyamānaḥ punaḥ punaḥ। paryāye tāta kasmiṁścid brāhmaṇyam iha vindati॥13-30-7॥
[बह्वीः (bahvīḥ) - many; तु (tu) - but; संसरण्-योनीः (saṁsaraṇ-yonīḥ) - cycles of birth wombs; जायमानः (jāyamānaḥ) - being born; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; पर्याये (paryāye) - in turn; तात (tāta) - O dear; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṁścit) - in some; ब्राह्मण्यम् (brāhmaṇyam) - Brahminhood; इह (iha) - here; विन्दति (vindati) - finds;]
(But being born again and again in many cycles of birth wombs, in turn, O dear, here one finds Brahminhood in some (birth). (13-30-7))
O dear, after being born again and again in many different wombs through the cycles of rebirth, one eventually attains Brahminhood here in some birth. (13-30-7)
मतङ्ग उवाच॥

Matanga said.
किं मां तुदसि दुःखार्तं मृतं मारयसे च माम्। तं तु शोचामि यो लब्ध्वा ब्राह्मण्यं न बुभूषते ॥१३-३०-८॥
kiṁ māṁ tudasi duḥkhārtaṁ mṛtaṁ mārayase ca mām। taṁ tu śocāmi yo labdhvā brāhmaṇyaṁ na bubhūṣate ॥13-30-8॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; माम् (mām) - me; तुदसि (tudasi) - you strike; दुःखार्तं (duḥkhārtaṁ) - afflicted by pain; मृतं (mṛtaṁ) - dead; मारयसे (mārayase) - you kill; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; तं (taṁ) - him; तु (tu) - but; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; यः (yaḥ) - who; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyaṁ) - Brahminhood; न (na) - not; बुभूषते (bubhūṣate) - desires to live;]
(What me you strike afflicted by pain dead you kill and me. Him but I grieve who having obtained Brahminhood not desires to live. (13-30-8))
Why do you strike me, who am afflicted by pain and already dead, and kill me again? But I grieve for him who, having obtained Brahminhood, does not wish to live. (13-30-8)
ब्राह्मण्यं यदि दुष्प्रापं त्रिभिर्वर्णैः शतक्रतो। सुदुर्लभं तदावाप्य नानुतिष्ठन्ति मानवाः ॥१३-३०-९॥
brāhmaṇyaṃ yadi duṣprāpaṃ tribhirvarṇaiḥ śatakrato। sudurlabhaṃ tadāvāpya nānutiṣṭhanti mānavāḥ ॥13-30-9॥
[ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - state of being a Brāhmaṇa; यदि (yadi) - if; दुष्प्रापं (duṣprāpam) - difficult to attain; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; वर्णैः (varṇaiḥ) - by castes; शतक्रतो (śatakrato) - O Indra; सुदुर्लभं (sudurlabham) - very hard to obtain; तत् (tat) - that; आवाप्य (āvāpya) - having obtained; न (na) - not; अनुतिष्ठन्ति (anutiṣṭhanti) - they practice; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men;]
(The state of being a Brāhmaṇa, if difficult to attain by the three castes, O Indra, even having obtained that very hard to obtain (state), men do not practice (it).)
O Indra, if the state of being a Brāhmaṇa is difficult to attain by the three castes, even after attaining that which is very hard to obtain, men do not practice it. (13-30-9)
यः पापेभ्यः पापतमस्तेषामधम एव सः। ब्राह्मण्यं योऽवजानीते धनं लब्ध्वेव दुर्लभम् ॥१३-३०-१०॥
yaḥ pāpebhyaḥ pāpatamasteṣāmadham eva saḥ। brāhmaṇyaṃ yo'vajānīte dhanaṃ labdhveva durlabham ॥13-30-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; पापेभ्यः (pāpebhyaḥ) - from the sinful ones; पापतमः (pāpatamaḥ) - most sinful; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; अधमः (adhamaḥ) - lowest; एव (eva) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; ब्राह्मण्यं (brāhmaṇyam) - Brahminhood; यः (yaḥ) - who; अवजानीते (avajānīte) - despises; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; इव (iva) - as if; दुर्लभम् (durlabham) - difficult to obtain;]
(He who is the most sinful among the sinful ones, indeed the lowest of them, is he who despises Brahminhood, having obtained it as if it were wealth difficult to obtain.)
He who, among sinners, is the most sinful and the lowest, is the one who, having attained Brahminhood—so rare and difficult to obtain—despises it, just as one might scorn a hard-won treasure. (13-30-10)
दुष्प्रापं खलु विप्रत्वं प्राप्तं दुरनुपालनम्। दुरवापमवाप्यैतन्नानुतिष्ठन्ति मानवाः ॥१३-३०-११॥
duṣprāpaṃ khalu vipratvaṃ prāptaṃ duranupālanam। duravāpam avāpyaitannānutiṣṭhanti mānavāḥ ॥13-30-11॥
[दुष्प्रापं (duṣprāpam) - difficult to obtain; खलु (khalu) - indeed; विप्रत्वं (vipratvam) - brāhmaṇa-hood; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - attained; दुरनुपालनम् (duranupālanam) - difficult to maintain; दुरवापम् (duravāpam) - hard to acquire; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; अनुतिष्ठन्ति (anutiṣṭhanti) - carry out; मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - men;]
(Difficult to obtain indeed is brāhmaṇa-hood, attained is difficult to maintain; hard to acquire, having obtained this, not carry out men.)
Indeed, brāhmaṇa-hood is difficult to obtain and, once attained, is hard to maintain; having acquired this difficult status, men do not uphold it. (13-30-11)
एकारामो ह्यहं शक्र निर्द्वंद्वो निष्परिग्रहः। अहिंसादमदानस्थः कथं नार्हामि विप्रताम् ॥१३-३०-१२॥
ekārāmo hyahaṃ śakra nirdvaṃdvo niṣparigrahaḥ। ahiṃsādamadānasthaḥ kathaṃ nārhāmi vipratām ॥13-30-12॥
[एकारामः (ekārāmaḥ) - having one delight; only one object of joy; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; अहम् (aham) - I; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; O Indra; निर्द्वंद्वः (nirdvaṃdvaḥ) - free from dualities; without opposites; निष्परिग्रहः (niṣparigrahaḥ) - without possessions; free from attachment; अहिंसा (ahiṃsā) - non-violence; दम (dama) - self-restraint; दान (dāna) - charity; giving; स्थः (sthaḥ) - established in; abiding in; कथम् (katham) - how; न (na) - not; अर्हामि (arhāmi) - am worthy; deserve; विप्रताम् (vipratām) - the state of a Brāhmaṇa; Brāhmaṇahood;]
(Having one delight indeed I, O Śakra, free from dualities, without possessions, established in non-violence, self-restraint, and charity, how am I not worthy of Brāhmaṇahood? (13-30-12))
O Śakra, I have only one delight, am free from dualities and possessions, and am established in non-violence, self-restraint, and charity. How then am I not worthy of being a Brāhmaṇa? (13-30-12)
यथाकामविहारी स्यां कामरूपी विहङ्गमः। ब्रह्मक्षत्राविरोधेन पूजां च प्राप्नुयामहम् ॥ यथा ममाक्षया कीर्तिर्भवेच्चापि पुरंदर ॥१३-३०-१३॥
yathākāmavihārī syāṃ kāmarūpī vihaṅgamaḥ। brahmakṣatrāvirodhena pūjāṃ ca prāpnuyāmaham ॥ yathā mamākṣayā kīrtirbhaveccāpi puraṃdara ॥13-30-13॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; according to desire; काम (kāma) - desire; wish; विहारी (vihārī) - one who moves; wanderer; स्याम् (syām) - may I be; let me be; कामरूपी (kāmarūpī) - assuming any form at will; of desired form; विहङ्गमः (vihaṅgamaḥ) - bird; sky-goer; ब्रह्म (brahma) - brāhmaṇa; priestly class; क्षत्र (kṣatra) - kṣatriya; warrior class; अविरोधेन (avirodhena) - without opposition; without conflict; पूजां (pūjāṃ) - worship; honor; च (ca) - and; प्राप्नुयाम् (prāpnuyām) - may I obtain; may I attain; अहम् (aham) - I; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; मम (mama) - my; अक्षया (akṣayā) - imperishable; undecaying; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; glory; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; may become; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; even; पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - O Purandara; Indra;]
(As a wanderer according to desire, may I be, assuming any form at will, a bird; without opposition from brāhmaṇa and kṣatriya, worship and also may I obtain, I. As my imperishable fame may be and also, O Purandara.)
May I be a wanderer at will, able to assume any form, a bird; may I receive worship without opposition from brāhmaṇas and kṣatriyas. May my fame be imperishable, O Purandara, as well. (13-30-13)

छन्दोदेव इति ख्यातः स्त्रीणां पूज्यो भविष्यसि। भीष्म उवाच ॥१३-३०-१४॥
chandodeva iti khyātaḥ strīṇāṃ pūjyo bhaviṣyasi. bhīṣma uvāca ॥13-30-14॥
[छन्दोदेव (chandodeva) - Chandodeva; (name); इति (iti) - thus; so; in this way; ख्यातः (khyātaḥ) - well-known; famous; renowned; स्त्रीणां (strīṇāṃ) - of women; of females; पूज्यः (pūjyaḥ) - worthy of worship; to be honored; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - you will become; you will be; भीष्म (bhīṣma) - Bhishma; (name); उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke;]
("Chandodeva", thus well-known, of women, worthy of worship, you will become. Bhishma said. (13-30-14))
You will become well-known as "Chandodeva", worthy of worship among women. Bhishma said. (13-30-14)
एवं तस्मै वरं दत्त्वा वासवोऽन्तरधीयत। प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा मतङ्गोऽपि प्राप तत्स्थानमुत्तमम् ॥१३-३०-१५॥
evaṃ tasmai varaṃ dattvā vāsavo'ntaradhīyata. prāṇāṃstyaktvā mataṅgo'pi prāpa tatsthānamuttamam ॥13-30-15॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; वासवः (vāsavaḥ) - Indra; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; मतङ्गः (mataṅgaḥ) - Matanga; अपि (api) - also; प्राप (prāpa) - attained; तत् (tat) - that; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(Thus, to him, boon, having given, Indra disappeared. Life-breaths having abandoned, Matanga also attained that place supreme.)
Thus, having granted the boon to him, Indra disappeared. After giving up his life, Matanga also attained that supreme place. (13-30-15)
एवमेतत्परं स्थानं ब्राह्मण्यं नाम भारत। तच्च दुष्प्रापमिह वै महेन्द्रवचनं यथा ॥१३-३०-१६॥
evam etat paraṃ sthānaṃ brāhmaṇyaṃ nāma bhārata। tac ca duṣprāpam iha vai mahendravačanaṃ yathā ॥13-30-16॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; परम् (param) - supreme; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; ब्राह्मण्यम् (brāhmaṇyam) - state of being a Brāhmaṇa; नाम (nāma) - named; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; दुष्प्रापम् (duṣprāpam) - difficult to attain; इह (iha) - here; वै (vai) - indeed; महेन्द्रवचनम् (mahendravačanam) - Indra's statement; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(Thus this supreme place, the state of being a Brāhmaṇa, named, O Bhārata; and that is difficult to attain here indeed, as Indra's statement.)
Thus, O Bhārata, this supreme state called Brāhmaṇahood is indeed difficult to attain here, as stated by Indra. (13-30-16)
