श्रुतं मे महदाख्यानमेतत्कुरुकुलोद्वह। सुदुष्प्रापं ब्रवीषि त्वं ब्राह्मण्यं वदतां वर ॥१३-३१-१॥
śrutaṃ me mahadākhyānam etat kurukulodvaha। suduṣprāpaṃ bravīṣi tvaṃ brāhmaṇyaṃ vadatāṃ vara ॥13-31-1॥

O uplifter of the Kuru lineage, I have heard this great narrative from you; you speak of Brahminhood, which is very difficult to attain, O best of speakers. (13-31-1)
विश्वामित्रेण च पुरा ब्राह्मण्यं प्राप्तमित्युत। श्रूयते वदसे तच्च दुष्प्रापमिति सत्तम ॥१३-३१-२॥
viśvāmitreṇa ca purā brāhmaṇyaṃ prāptam ity uta। śrūyate vadase tac ca duṣprāpam iti sattama ॥13-31-2॥

वीतहव्यश्च राजर्षिः श्रुतो मे विप्रतां गतः। तदेव तावद्गाङ्गेय श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं विभो ॥१३-३१-३॥
vītahavyaś ca rājarṣiḥ śruto me vipratāṃ gataḥ। tad eva tāvad gāṅgeya śrotum icchāmi ahaṃ vibho ॥13-31-3॥

Vītahavya, the royal sage, I have heard, attained the state of a Brāhmaṇa; that very thing, O son of Gangā, I wish to hear from you, O mighty one. (13-31-3)
स केन कर्मणा प्राप्तो ब्राह्मण्यं राजसत्तम। वरेण तपसा वापि तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हति ॥१३-३१-४॥
sa kena karmaṇā prāpto brāhmaṇyaṃ rājasattama. vareṇa tapasā vāpi tanme vyākhyātumarhati ॥13-31-4॥

शृणु राजन्यथा राजा वीतहव्यो महायशाः। क्षत्रियः सन्पुनः प्राप्तो ब्राह्मण्यं लोकसत्कृतम् ॥१३-३१-५॥
śṛṇu rājanyathā rājā vītahavyo mahāyaśāḥ। kṣatriyaḥ sanpunaḥ prāpto brāhmaṇyaṃ lokasatkṛtam ॥13-31-5॥

मनोर्महात्मनस्तात प्रजाधर्मेण शासतः। बभूव पुत्रो धर्मात्मा शर्यातिरिति विश्रुतः ॥१३-३१-६॥

O dear one, Śaryāti, the righteous-souled and well-known son of the great-souled Manu, who ruled his subjects with righteousness, was born. (13-31-6)
तस्यान्ववाये द्वौ राजन्राजानौ सम्बभूवतुः। हेहयस्तालजङ्घश्च वत्सेषु जयतां वर ॥१३-३१-७॥
tasyānvavāye dvau rājan rājānau sambabhūvatuḥ। hehayas tālajaṅghaś ca vatseṣu jayatāṃ vara ॥13-31-7॥

हेहयस्य तु पुत्राणां दशसु स्त्रीषु भारत। शतं बभूव प्रख्यातं शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ॥१३-३१-८॥
hehayasya tu putrāṇāṃ daśasu strīṣu bhārata। śataṃ babhūva prakhyātaṃ śūrāṇām anivartinām ॥13-31-8॥

O Bhārata, from the ten wives of Hehaya, a hundred famous sons were born, all of them heroic and never turning back. (13-31-8)
तुल्यरूपप्रभावाणां विदुषां युद्धशालिनाम्। धनुर्वेदे च वेदे च सर्वत्रैव कृतश्रमाः ॥१३-३१-९॥
tulyarūpaprabhāvāṇāṃ viduṣāṃ yuddhaśālinām। dhanurvede ca vede ca sarvatraiva kṛtaśramāḥ ॥13-31-9॥
[तुल्य (tulya) - equal; रूप (rūpa) - form; प्रभावाणां (prabhāvāṇām) - of those possessing power; विदुषां (viduṣām) - of the learned; युद्धशालिनाम् (yuddhaśālinām) - of those skilled in battle; धनुर्वेदे (dhanurvede) - in the science of archery; च (ca) - and; वेदे (vede) - in the Veda; च (ca) - and; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; एव (eva) - indeed; कृतश्रमाः (kṛtaśramāḥ) - those who have made effort;]
(Of those possessing equal form and power, of the learned, of those skilled in battle, in the science of archery and in the Veda, indeed everywhere, those who have made effort.)
Those who possess equal form and power, who are learned and skilled in battle, who have exerted themselves in the science of archery and in the Veda, and indeed everywhere, are those who have made effort. (13-31-9)
काशिष्वपि नृपो राजन्दिवोदासपितामहः। हर्यश्व इति विख्यातो बभूव जयतां वरः ॥१३-३१-१०॥
kāśiṣv api nṛpo rājan divodāsa-pitāmahaḥ। haryaśva iti vikhyāto babhūva jayatāṃ varaḥ ॥13-31-10॥

स वीतहव्यदायादैरागत्य पुरुषर्षभ। गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्ये सङ्ग्रामे विनिपातितः ॥१३-३१-११॥
sa vītahavyadāyādair āgatya puruṣarṣabha। gaṅgāyamunayor madhye saṅgrāme vinipātitaḥ ॥13-31-11॥
[स (sa) - he; वीतहव्यदायादैः (vītahavyadāyādaiḥ) - by the descendants of Vītahavya; आगत्य (āgatya) - having come; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O bull among men; गङ्गायमुनयोः (gaṅgāyamunayoh) - of Gaṅgā and Yamunā; मध्ये (madhye) - in the middle; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; विनिपातितः (vinipātitaḥ) - was slain;]
(He, by the descendants of Vītahavya, having come, O bull among men, of Gaṅgā and Yamunā in the middle, in battle, was slain.)
O best of men, he was slain in battle by the descendants of Vītahavya, having come to the region between the Gaṅgā and Yamunā. (13-31-11)
तं तु हत्वा नरवरं हेहयास्ते महारथाः। प्रतिजग्मुः पुरीं रम्यां वत्सानामकुतोभयाः ॥१३-३१-१२॥
taṃ tu hatvā naravaraṃ hehayāste mahārathāḥ। pratijagmuḥ purīṃ ramyāṃ vatsānāmakutobhayāḥ ॥13-31-12॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तु (tu) - but; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; नरवरं (naravaraṃ) - the best of men; हेहयाः (hehayāḥ) - the Hehayas; ते (te) - they; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; प्रतिजग्मुः (pratijagmuḥ) - returned; पुरीं (purīṃ) - to the city; रम्यां (ramyāṃ) - beautiful; वत्सानाम् (vatsānām) - of the Vatsas; अकुतोभयाः (akutobhayāḥ) - free from fear from any quarter;]
(Him but having slain, the best of men, the Hehayas, they, great chariot-warriors, returned to the beautiful city of the Vatsas, free from fear from any quarter.)

हर्यश्वस्य तु दायादः काशिराजोऽभ्यषिच्यत। सुदेवो देवसङ्काशः साक्षाद्धर्म इवापरः ॥१३-३१-१३॥
haryaśvasya tu dāyādaḥ kāśirājo'bhyaṣicyata। sudevo devasaṅkāśaḥ sākṣāddharma ivāparaḥ ॥13-31-13॥

(He, indeed protecting the earth, the righteous-souled delight of Kāśi; by them, by the Vītahavyas, having come, in battle, by all, was completely conquered.)
While he, the righteous king of Kāśi, was protecting the earth, he was completely conquered in battle by all the Vītahavyas who came there. (13-31-14)
तमप्याजौ विनिर्जित्य प्रतिजग्मुर्यथागतम्। सौदेविस्त्वथ काशीशो दिवोदासोऽभ्यषिच्यत ॥१३-३१-१५॥
tam apy ājau vinirjitya pratijagmur yathāgatam। saudevis tv atha kāśīśo divodāso 'bhyaṣicyata ॥13-31-15॥

स निष्पत्य ददौ युद्धं तेभ्यो राजा महाबलः। देवासुरसमं घोरं दिवोदासो महाद्युतिः ॥१३-३१-२०॥
sa niṣpatya dadau yuddhaṃ tebhyo rājā mahābalaḥ। devāsurasamaṃ ghoraṃ divodāso mahādyutiḥ ॥13-31-20॥
[स (sa) - he; निष्पत्य (niṣpatya) - having come forth; ददौ (dadau) - gave; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; राजा (rājā) - king; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - of great strength; देवासुरसमं (devāsurasamaṃ) - equal to the gods and asuras; घोरं (ghoraṃ) - terrible; दिवोदासः (divodāsaḥ) - Divodāsa; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - of great splendor;]
(He, having come forth, gave battle to them, the king of great strength, Divodāsa of great splendor, (a battle) equal to the gods and asuras, terrible.)
Having come forth, the mighty king Divodāsa, radiant with great splendor, gave them battle—a terrible conflict equal to that between the gods and asuras. (13-31-20)
स तु युद्धे महाराज दिनानां दशतीर्दश। हतवाहनभूयिष्ठस्ततो दैन्यमुपागमत् ॥१३-३१-२१॥
sa tu yuddhe mahārāja dinānāṃ daśatīrdaśa। hatavāhanabhūyiṣṭhastato dainyamupāgamat ॥13-31-21॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; दिनानां (dinānāṃ) - of days; दशतीः (daśatīḥ) - ten decades; दश (daśa) - ten; हतवाहनभूयिष्ठः (hatavāhanabhūyiṣṭhaḥ) - mostly with slain vehicles; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दैन्यम् (dainyam) - misery; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - he attained;]
(He but in battle O great king of days ten decades ten mostly with slain vehicles then misery he attained.)
But he, O great king, after fighting in battle for one hundred and ten days, with most of the vehicles destroyed, then fell into misery. (13-31-21)
हतयोधस्ततो राजन्क्षीणकोशश्च भूमिपः। दिवोदासः पुरीं हित्वा पलायनपरोऽभवत् ॥१३-३१-२२॥
hatayodhas tato rājan kṣīṇakośaś ca bhūmipaḥ। divodāsaḥ purīṃ hitvā palāyanaparo'bhavat ॥13-31-22॥
[हतयोधस् (hatayodhas) - with warriors slain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; क्षीणकोशः (kṣīṇakośaḥ) - with treasury depleted; च (ca) - and; भूमिपः (bhūmipaḥ) - the ruler; दिवोदासः (divodāsaḥ) - Divodāsa; पुरीम् (purīm) - city; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; पलायनपरः (palāyanaparaḥ) - intent on fleeing; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(With warriors slain, then, O king, and with treasury depleted, the ruler Divodāsa, having abandoned the city, became intent on fleeing.)
O king, with his warriors slain and his treasury exhausted, the ruler Divodāsa abandoned the city and became intent on flight. (13-31-22)
स त्वाश्रममुपागम्य भरद्वाजस्य धीमतः। जगाम शरणं राजा कृताञ्जलिररिंदम ॥१३-३१-२३॥
sa tvāśramam upāgamya bharadvājasya dhīmataḥ। jagāma śaraṇaṃ rājā kṛtāñjalir ariṃdama ॥13-31-23॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; भरद्वाजस्य (bharadvājasya) - of Bharadvāja; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; जगाम (jagāma) - went; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; राजा (rājā) - king; कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - destroyer of enemies;]
(He but having approached the hermitage of Bharadvāja the wise, went to refuge, the king, with joined palms, destroyer of enemies.)
But he, the king and destroyer of enemies, having approached the hermitage of the wise Bharadvāja with joined palms, sought refuge there. (13-31-23)

The king said.
भगवन्वैतहव्यैर्मे युद्धे वंशः प्रणाशितः। अहमेकः परिद्यूनो भवन्तं शरणं गतः ॥१३-३१-२४॥
bhagavan vaitahavyair me yuddhe vaṃśaḥ praṇāśitaḥ। aham ekaḥ paridyūno bhavantaṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ ॥13-31-24॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; वैतहव्यैः (vaitahavyaiḥ) - by the Vaitahavyas; मे (me) - my; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - family; प्रणाशितः (praṇāśitaḥ) - destroyed; अहम् (aham) - I; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; परिद्यूनः (paridyūnaḥ) - bereft; भवन्तम् (bhavantaṃ) - you; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(O Lord, by the Vaitahavyas my family in battle destroyed; I alone bereft, to you refuge gone.)
O Lord, my family has been destroyed in battle by the Vaitahavyas; I am left alone and bereft, and have come to you for refuge. (13-31-24)
शिष्यस्नेहेन भगवन्स मां रक्षितुमर्हसि। निःशेषो हि कृतो वंशो मम तैः पापकर्मभिः ॥१३-३१-२५॥
śiṣyasnehen bhagavans māṃ rakṣitumarhasi। niḥśeṣo hi kṛto vaṃśo mama taiḥ pāpakarmabhiḥ ॥13-31-25॥
[शिष्यस्नेहेन (śiṣyasnehen) - by affection for a disciple; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; माम् (mām) - me; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; निःशेषः (niḥśeṣaḥ) - completely; हि (hi) - indeed; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - has been made; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - lineage; मम (mama) - my; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; पापकर्मभिः (pāpakarmabhiḥ) - by evil deeds;]
(By affection for a disciple, O Lord, you ought to protect me. Completely indeed has been made my lineage by them by evil deeds.)
O Lord, out of affection for your disciple, you ought to protect me. My entire lineage has indeed been destroyed by their evil deeds. (13-31-25)
तमुवाच महाभागो भरद्वाजः प्रतापवान्। न भेतव्यं न भेतव्यं सौदेव व्येतु ते भयम् ॥१३-३१-२६॥
tam uvāca mahābhāgo bharadvājaḥ pratāpavān। na bhetavyaṃ na bhetavyaṃ saudeva vyetu te bhayam ॥13-31-26॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - greatly fortunate one; भरद्वाजः (bharadvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; न (na) - not; भेतव्यम् (bhetavyam) - should be feared; न (na) - not; भेतव्यम् (bhetavyam) - should be feared; सौदेव (saudeva) - O Saudeva; व्येतु (vyetu) - let depart; ते (te) - your; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(Him said the greatly fortunate Bharadvāja, powerful: Not should be feared, not should be feared, O Saudeva, let your fear depart.)
The greatly fortunate and powerful Bharadvāja said to him: "Do not be afraid, do not be afraid, O Saudeva, let your fear go away." (13-31-26)
अहमिष्टिं करोम्यद्य पुत्रार्थं ते विशां पते। वैतहव्यसहस्राणि यथा त्वं प्रसहिष्यसि ॥१३-३१-२७॥
aham iṣṭiṃ karomy adya putrārthaṃ te viśāṃ pate। vaitahavyasahasrāṇi yathā tvaṃ prasahiṣyasi ॥13-31-27॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; इष्टिं (iṣṭim) - sacrifice; करोमि (karomi) - perform; अद्य (adya) - today; पुत्रार्थं (putrārtham) - for the sake of a son; ते (te) - for you; विशां (viśām) - of the peoples; पते (pate) - O lord; वैतहव्यसहस्राणि (vaitahavyasahasrāṇi) - thousands of Vaitahavyas; यथा (yathā) - so that; त्वम् (tvam) - you; प्रसहिष्यसि (prasahiṣyasi) - will overcome;]
(I sacrifice perform today for the sake of a son for you O lord of the peoples; thousands of Vaitahavyas so that you will overcome;)
Today I perform a sacrifice for you, O lord of the peoples, for the sake of a son, so that you may overcome thousands of Vaitahavyas. (13-31-27)
तत इष्टिं चकारर्षिस्तस्य वै पुत्रकामिकीम्। अथास्य तनयो जज्ञे प्रतर्दन इति श्रुतः ॥१३-३१-२८॥
tata iṣṭiṃ cakāra ṛṣis tasya vai putrakāmikīm। athāsya tanayo jajñe pratardana iti śrutaḥ ॥13-31-28॥
[तत् (tat) - then; इष्टिं (iṣṭim) - sacrifice; चकार (cakāra) - performed; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; तस्य (tasya) - his; वै (vai) - indeed; पुत्रकामिकीम् (putrakāmikīm) - desiring a son; अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - son; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; प्रतर्दन (pratardana) - Pratardana; इति (iti) - thus; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - is heard;]
(Then the sage performed a sacrifice desiring a son for him indeed. Then his son was born, Pratardana, thus is heard.)
Then the sage performed a sacrifice for the sake of obtaining a son for him. Thereafter, his son was born, who is known as Pratardana. (13-31-28)
स जातमात्रो ववृधे समाः सद्यस्त्रयोदश। वेदं चाधिजगे कृत्स्नं धनुर्वेदं च भारत ॥१३-३१-२९॥
sa jātamātro vavṛdhe samāḥ sadyastrayodaśa। vedaṃ cādhijage kṛtsnaṃ dhanurvedaṃ ca bhārata ॥13-31-29॥
[स (sa) - he; जातमात्रः (jātamātraḥ) - just born; ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; समाः (samāḥ) - years; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; त्रयोदश (trayodaśa) - thirteen; वेदम् (vedam) - Veda; च (ca) - and; अधिजगे (adhijage) - mastered; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - entire; धनुर्वेदम् (dhanurvedam) - science of archery; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(He just born grew years immediately thirteen; Veda and mastered entire science of archery and O Bhārata;)
O Bhārata, as soon as he was born, he grew to thirteen years in an instant, and mastered the entire Veda and the science of archery. (13-31-29)
योगेन च समाविष्टो भरद्वाजेन धीमता। तेजो लौक्यं स सङ्गृह्य तस्मिन्देशे समाविशत् ॥१३-३१-३०॥
yogena ca samāviṣṭo bharadvājena dhīmatā। tejo laukyaṃ sa saṅgṛhya tasmiṃdeśe samāviśat ॥13-31-30॥
[योगेन (yogena) - by union; by yoga; च (ca) - and; समाविष्टः (samāviṣṭaḥ) - entered; pervaded; भरद्वाजेन (bharadvājena) - by Bharadvāja; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; brilliance; लौक्यं (laukyaṃ) - worldly; of the world; स (sa) - he; सङ्गृह्य (saṅgṛhya) - having gathered; having collected; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; देशे (deśe) - place; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered;]
(By union and entered by Bharadvāja by the wise, energy worldly he having gathered in that place entered.)
By the power of yoga and with the wise Bharadvāja, having gathered his worldly energy, he entered that place. (13-31-30)
ततः स कवची धन्वी बाणी दीप्त इवानलः। प्रययौ स धनुर्धुन्वन् विवर्षुरिव तोयदः ॥१३-३१-३१॥
tataḥ sa kavacī dhanvī bāṇī dīpta ivā'nalaḥ। prayayau sa dhanur-dhunvan vivaṛṣur-iva toyadaḥ ॥13-31-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; कवची (kavacī) - armored; धन्वी (dhanvī) - bearing a bow; बाणी (bāṇī) - having arrows; दीप्त (dīpta) - shining; इव (iva) - like; अनलः (analaḥ) - fire; प्रययौ (prayayau) - he went; स (sa) - he; धनुर्धुन्वन् (dhanur-dhunvan) - shaking the bow; विवर्षुः (vivaṛṣuḥ) - pouring forth; इव (iva) - like; तोयदः (toyadaḥ) - cloud;]
(Then he, armored, bearing a bow, having arrows, shining like fire, went, he, shaking the bow, like a cloud pouring forth.)
Then he, clad in armor, with bow and arrows, shining like fire, advanced, shaking his bow like a cloud pouring forth. (13-31-31)
तं दृष्ट्वा परमं हर्षं सुदेवतनयो ययौ। मेने च मनसा दग्धान्वैतहव्यान्स पार्थिवः ॥१३-३१-३२॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā paramaṃ harṣaṃ sudevatanayo yayau। mene ca manasā dagdhān vaitahavyān sa pārthivaḥ ॥13-31-32॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; परमं (paramaṃ) - supreme; हर्षं (harṣaṃ) - joy; सुदेवतनयः (sudevatnayaḥ) - the son of Sudeva; ययौ (yayau) - went; मेने (mene) - thought; च (ca) - and; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; दग्धान् (dagdhān) - burnt; वैतहव्यान् (vaitahavyān) - the Vaitahavyas; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - the king;]
(Having seen him, the son of Sudeva went with supreme joy; and the king thought with (his) mind that the Vaitahavyas were burnt.)
Seeing him, the son of Sudeva was filled with supreme joy and departed; and the king thought in his mind that the Vaitahavyas had been destroyed. (13-31-32)
ततस्तं यौवराज्येन स्थापयित्वा प्रतर्दनम्। कृतकृत्यं तदात्मानं स राजा अभ्यनन्दत ॥१३-३१-३३॥
tatastaṃ yauvarājyena sthāpayitvā pratardanam। kṛtakṛtyaṃ tadātmānaṃ sa rājā abhyanandata ॥13-31-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; यौवराज्येन (yauvarājyena) - with the crown-princeship; स्थापयित्वा (sthāpayitvā) - having installed; प्रतर्दनम् (pratardanam) - Pratardana; कृतकृत्यम् (kṛtakṛtyam) - having accomplished what was to be done; तत् (tat) - that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; अभ्यनन्दत (abhyanandata) - rejoiced;]
(Then, having installed Pratardana with the crown-princeship, having accomplished what was to be done, that self, he, the king, rejoiced.)
Then, after installing Pratardana as the crown prince, the king, having accomplished his purpose, rejoiced. (13-31-33)
ततस्तु वैतहव्यानां वधाय स महीपतिः। पुत्रं प्रस्थापयामास प्रतर्दनमरिंदमम् ॥१३-३१-३४॥
tatastu vaitahavyānāṃ vadhāya sa mahīpatiḥ। putraṃ prasthāpayāmāsa pratardanam ariṃdamam ॥13-31-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; तु (tu) - but; indeed; वैतहव्यानाम् (vaitahavyānām) - of the Vaitahavyas; वधाय (vadhāya) - for the killing; for the destruction; स (sa) - he; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king; lord of the earth; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; प्रस्थापयामास (prasthāpayāmāsa) - sent forth; dispatched; प्रतर्दनम् (pratardanam) - Pratardana; अरिंदमम् (ariṃdamam) - destroyer of enemies;]
(Then indeed, for the destruction of the Vaitahavyas, he, the king, sent forth his son Pratardana, the destroyer of enemies.)
Then, for the destruction of the Vaitahavyas, the king sent his son Pratardana, the destroyer of enemies. (13-31-34)
सरथः स तु सन्तीर्य गङ्गामाशु पराक्रमी। प्रययौ वीतहव्यानां पुरीं परपुरञ्जयः ॥१३-३१-३५॥
sarathaḥ sa tu santīrya gaṅgām āśu parākramī। prayayau vītahavyānāṃ purīṃ parapurañjayaḥ ॥13-31-35॥
[सरथः (sarathaḥ) - with chariot; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; सन्तीर्य (santīrya) - having crossed; गङ्गाम् (gaṅgām) - the Ganga; आशु (āśu) - quickly; पराक्रमी (parākramī) - the mighty one; प्रययौ (prayayau) - went; वीतहव्यानाम् (vītahavyānām) - of the Vītahavyas; पुरीम् (purīm) - city; परपुरञ्जयः (parapurañjayaḥ) - conqueror of enemy cities;]
(With chariot he but having crossed the Ganga quickly, the mighty one went to the city of the Vītahavyas, conqueror of enemy cities.)
But he, with his chariot, quickly crossed the Ganga; the mighty conqueror of enemy cities went to the city of the Vītahavyas. (13-31-35)
वैतहव्यास्तु संश्रुत्य रथघोषं समुद्धतम्। निर्ययुर्नगराकारै रथैः पररथारुजैः ॥१३-३१-३६॥
vaitahavyās tu saṃśrutya rathaghoṣaṃ samuddhatam। niryayur nagarākārai rathaiḥ pararathārujaiḥ ॥13-31-36॥
[वैतहव्याः (vaitahavyāḥ) - the Vaitahavyas; तु (tu) - but; संश्रुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having heard; रथघोषम् (rathaghoṣam) - the sound of chariots; समुद्धतम् (samuddhatam) - very loud; raised up; निर्ययुः (niryayuḥ) - went out; नगराकारैः (nagarākāraiḥ) - with city-like (in form); रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; पररथारुजैः (pararathārujaiḥ) - capable of destroying enemy chariots;]
(The Vaitahavyas, but, having heard the sound of chariots, very loud, went out with city-like chariots capable of destroying enemy chariots.)
But the Vaitahavyas, having heard the loud sound of chariots, went out with chariots resembling cities, capable of destroying enemy chariots. (13-31-36)
निष्क्रम्य ते नरव्याघ्रा दंशिताश्चित्रयोधिनः। प्रतर्दनं समाजघ्नुः शरवर्षैरुदायुधाः ॥१३-३१-३७॥
niṣkramya te naravyāghrā daṃśitāś citrayodhinaḥ। pratardanaṃ samājaghnuḥ śaravarṣair udāyudhāḥ ॥13-31-37॥
[निष्क्रम्य (niṣkramya) - having come out; ते (te) - those; नरव्याघ्राः (naravyāghrāḥ) - tiger-men; दंशिताः (daṃśitāḥ) - bitten; च (ca) - and; चित्रयोधिनः (citrayodhinaḥ) - varied warriors; प्रतर्दनम् (pratardanam) - Pratardana; समाजघ्नुः (samājaghnuḥ) - together struck; शरवर्षैः (śaravarṣaiḥ) - with showers of arrows; उदायुधाः (udāyudhāḥ) - with uplifted weapons;]
(Having come out, those tiger-men, bitten and varied warriors, together struck Pratardana with showers of arrows and uplifted weapons.)
Having emerged, those tiger-like men, who were wounded and were distinguished warriors, together attacked Pratardana with showers of arrows and raised weapons. (13-31-37)
अस्त्रैश्च विविधाकारै रथौघैश्च युधिष्ठिर। अभ्यवर्षन्त राजानं हिमवन्तमिवाम्बुदाः ॥१३-३१-३८॥
astraiś ca vividhākārai rathaughaiś ca yudhiṣṭhira। abhyavarṣanta rājānaṃ himavantam ivāmbudāḥ ॥13-31-38॥
[अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by missiles; च (ca) - and; विविधाकारैः (vividhākāraiḥ) - of various forms; रथौघैः (rathaughaiḥ) - by chariot-torrents; च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhishthira; अभ्यवर्षन्त (abhyavarṣanta) - they showered upon; राजानं (rājānam) - the king; हिमवन्तम् (himavantam) - Himavat; इव (iva) - like; अम्बुदाः (ambudāḥ) - clouds;]
(By missiles and of various forms, and by chariot-torrents, O Yudhishthira, they showered upon the king like clouds (shower upon) Himavat.)
O Yudhishthira, with missiles of various kinds and torrents of chariots, they showered upon the king like clouds upon Mount Himavat. (13-31-38)
अस्त्रैरस्त्राणि संवार्य तेषां राजा प्रतर्दनः। जघान तान्महातेजा वज्रानलसमैः शरैः ॥१३-३१-३९॥
astrair astrāṇi saṁvārya teṣāṁ rājā pratardanaḥ। jaghāna tān mahātejā vajrānalasamaiḥ śaraiḥ ॥13-31-39॥
[अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by weapons; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; संवार्य (saṁvārya) - having warded off; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; राजा (rājā) - king; प्रतर्दनः (pratardanaḥ) - Pratardana; जघान (jaghāna) - killed; तान् (tān) - them; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great energy; वज्रानलसमैः (vajrānalasamaiḥ) - equal to thunderbolt and fire; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows;]
(By weapons, having warded off the weapons of them, king Pratardana, killed them, of great energy, with arrows equal to thunderbolt and fire.)
King Pratardana, of great energy, warded off their weapons with his own weapons and killed them with arrows as powerful as thunderbolts and fire. (13-31-39)
कृत्तोत्तमाङ्गास्ते राजन्भल्लैः शतसहस्रशः। अपतन्रुधिरार्द्राङ्गा निकृत्ता इव किंशुकाः ॥१३-३१-४०॥
kṛttottamāṅgās te rājan bhallaiḥ śata-sahasraśaḥ। apatan rudhirārdra-aṅgā nikṛttā iva kiṃśukāḥ॥13-31-40॥
[कृत्त-उत्तम-अङ्गाः (kṛtta-uttama-aṅgāḥ) - cut-off-best-limbs; ते (te) - they; राजन् (rājan) - O king; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - with arrows; शत-सहस्रशः (śata-sahasraśaḥ) - by hundreds and thousands; अपतन् (apatan) - fell down; रुधिर-अर्द्र-अङ्गाः (rudhira-ardra-aṅgāḥ) - blood-moistened-bodies; निकृत्ता (nikṛttāḥ) - severed; इव (iva) - like; किंशुकाः (kiṃśukāḥ) - butea flowers;]
(With their best limbs cut off, they, O king, by hundreds and thousands, fell down, their bodies moistened with blood, severed like butea flowers.)
O king, their finest limbs severed by arrows, they fell by the hundreds and thousands, their blood-soaked bodies strewn like butea flowers. (13-31-40)
हतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वीतहव्यः सुतेष्वथ। प्राद्रवन्नगरं हित्वा भृगोराश्रममप्युत ॥१३-३१-४१॥
hateṣu teṣu sarveṣu vītahavyaḥ suteṣvatha। prādravannagaraṃ hitvā bhṛgorāśramamapyuta ॥13-31-41॥

भो भोः केऽत्राश्रमे सन्ति भृगोः शिष्या महात्मनः। द्रष्टुमिच्छे मुनिमहं तस्याचक्षत मामिति ॥१३-३१-४४॥
bho bhoḥ ke'trāśrame santi bhṛgoḥ śiṣyā mahātmanaḥ। draṣṭumicche munimahaṃ tasyācakṣata mām iti ॥13-31-44॥

(O O who here in the hermitage are of Bhṛgu disciples of the great-souled? To see I wish the sage I his tell to me thus.)
O, O! Who are the disciples of the great-souled Bhṛgu here in the hermitage? I wish to see the sage; please tell me about him. (13-31-44)
स तं विदित्वा तु भृगुर्निश्चक्रामाश्रमात्तदा। पूजयामास च ततो विधिना परमेण ह ॥१३-३१-४५॥
sa taṃ viditvā tu bhṛgur niścakrāmāśramāt tadā। pūjayāmāsa ca tato vidhinā parameṇa ha ॥13-31-45॥

(He, having known him, but Bhrigu departed from the hermitage then. Worshipped also thereafter with procedure supreme indeed.)
Having recognized him, Bhrigu then departed from the hermitage. Afterwards, he worshipped him with the highest procedure indeed. (13-31-45)
उवाच चैनं राजेन्द्र किं कार्यमिति पार्थिवम्। स चोवाच नृपस्तस्मै यदागमनकारणम् ॥१३-३१-४६॥
uvāca cainaṃ rājendra kiṃ kāryamiti pārthivam। sa covāca nṛpastasmai yadāgamanakāraṇam ॥13-31-46॥

अयं ब्रह्मन्नितो राजा वीतहव्यो विसर्ज्यताम्। अस्य पुत्रैर्हि मे ब्रह्मन्कृत्स्नो वंशः प्रणाशितः ॥ उत्सादितश्च विषयः काशीनां रत्नसञ्चयः ॥१३-३१-४७॥
ayaṃ brahman nito rājā vītahavyo visarjyatām। asya putrair hi me brahman kṛtsno vaṃśaḥ praṇāśitaḥ ॥ utsāditaś ca viṣayaḥ kāśīnāṃ ratnasañcayaḥ ॥13-31-47॥

(This, O Brāhmaṇa, from here king Vītahavya let him be sent away. By his sons indeed my, O Brāhmaṇa, entire lineage is destroyed. Ruined and the territory of the Kāśis, the treasure collection. (13-31-47))
O Brāhmaṇa, let this king Vītahavya be sent away from here. Indeed, by his sons, my entire lineage has been destroyed, and the territory of the Kāśis, along with their treasure, has been ruined. (13-31-47)
एतस्य वीर्यदृप्तस्य हतं पुत्रशतं मया। अस्येदानीं वधाद्ब्रह्मन्भविष्याम्यनृणः पितुः ॥१३-३१-४८॥
etasya vīryadṛptasya hataṃ putraśataṃ mayā। asyedānīṃ vadhādbrahmanbhaviṣyāmyanṛṇaḥ pituḥ ॥13-31-48॥
[एतस्य (etasya) - of this; (person); वीर्यदृप्तस्य (vīryadṛptasya) - of the one proud of strength; हतं (hataṃ) - killed; पुत्रशतं (putraśatam) - hundred sons; मया (mayā) - by me; अस्य (asya) - of him; इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; वधात् (vadhāt) - from the killing; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; अनृणः (anṛṇaḥ) - free from debt; पितुः (pituḥ) - to my father;]
(Of this one proud of strength, a hundred sons were killed by me. Now, from the killing of him, O Brahman, I shall become free from debt to my father.)
I have killed a hundred sons of this man who is proud of his strength. Now, O Brahman, by killing him, I shall become free from my debt to my father. (13-31-48)
तमुवाच कृपाविष्टो भृगुर्धर्मभृतां वरः। नेहास्ति क्षत्रियः कश्चित्सर्वे हीमे द्विजातयः ॥१३-३१-४९॥
tam uvāca kṛpāviṣṭo bhṛgur dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। nehāsti kṣatriyaḥ kaścit sarve hīme dvijātayaḥ ॥13-31-49॥

(Him said filled with compassion Bhṛgu, the best of the upholders of dharma; not here is a Kṣatriya any; all indeed these are twice-born.)
Bhṛgu, the best among the upholders of dharma, filled with compassion, said to him: "There is not a single Kṣatriya here; indeed, all these are twice-born." (13-31-49)
एवं तु वचनं श्रुत्वा भृगोस्तथ्यं प्रतर्दनः। पादावुपस्पृश्य शनैः प्रहसन्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१३-३१-५०॥
evaṃ tu vacanaṃ śrutvā bhṛgos tathyaṃ pratardanaḥ। pādāv upaspṛśya śanaiḥ prahasan vākyam abravīt ॥13-31-50॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तु (tu) - but; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; भृगोः (bhṛgoḥ) - of Bhṛgu; तथ्यम् (tathyaṃ) - truthful; प्रतर्दनः (pratardanaḥ) - Pratardana; पादौ (pādau) - feet (dual); उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched respectfully; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - gently; प्रहसन् (prahāsan) - smiling; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus but speech having heard of Bhṛgu truthful Pratardana feet having touched respectfully gently smiling words said.)
Having thus heard the truthful speech of Bhṛgu, Pratardana gently touched his feet, smiled, and spoke these words. (13-31-50)
एवमप्यस्मि भगवन्कृतकृत्यो न संशयः। यदेष राजा वीर्येण स्वजातिं त्याजितो मया ॥१३-३१-५१॥
evam apy asmi bhagavan kṛtakṛtyo na saṁśayaḥ। yad eṣa rājā vīryeṇa svajātiṁ tyājito mayā ॥13-31-51॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अपि (api) - also; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; कृतकृत्यः (kṛtakṛtyaḥ) - one who has accomplished his purpose; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; यत् (yat) - because; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; राजा (rājā) - king; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by strength; स्वजातिम् (svajātim) - his own race; त्याजितः (tyājitaḥ) - has been made to abandon; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Thus also I am, O Lord, one who has accomplished his purpose, not (having) doubt; because this king by strength his own race has been made to abandon by me.)
Thus, O Lord, I am indeed one who has fulfilled his purpose, without doubt, for this king has been made by me, through strength, to abandon his own race. (13-31-51)
अनुजानीहि मां ब्रह्मन्ध्यायस्व च शिवेन माम्। त्याजितो हि मया जातिमेष राजा भृगूद्वह ॥१३-३१-५२॥
anujānīhi māṃ brahma-dhyāyasva ca śivena mām। tyājito hi mayā jātim eṣa rājā bhṛgūdvaha ॥13-31-52॥
[अनुजानीहि (anujānīhi) - permit; allow; माम् (mām) - me; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; the Absolute; ध्यायस्व (dhyāyasva) - meditate upon; च (ca) - and; शिवेन (śivena) - by Śiva; with Śiva; माम् (mām) - me; त्याजितः (tyājitaḥ) - abandoned; forsaken; हि (hi) - indeed; मया (mayā) - by me; जातिम् (jātim) - caste; birth; एष (eṣa) - this; राजा (rājā) - king; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of Bhṛgus;]
(Permit me; meditate upon Brahman and me with Śiva; indeed, this king has been abandoned by me, O best of Bhṛgus.)
Allow me to go; meditate on Brahman and on me together with Śiva. This king has indeed been forsaken by me, O best of the Bhṛgus. (13-31-52)
ततस्तेनाभ्यनुज्ञातो ययौ राजा प्रतर्दनः। यथागतं महाराज मुक्त्वा विषमिवोरगः ॥१३-३१-५३॥
tatastenābhyanujñāto yayau rājā pratardanaḥ। yathāgataṃ mahārāja muktvā viṣamivoragaḥ ॥13-31-53॥

भृगोर्वचनमात्रेण स च ब्रह्मर्षितां गतः। वीतहव्यो महाराज ब्रह्मवादित्वमेव च ॥१३-३१-५४॥
bhṛgor vacanamātreṇa sa ca brahmarṣitāṃ gataḥ। vītahavyo mahārāja brahmavāditvameva ca ॥13-31-54॥

(By the mere word of Bhṛgu, he also attained the state of a Brahmarṣi. Vītahavya, O great king, indeed also (attained) the state of being a speaker of Brahman. (13-31-54))
By the mere word of Bhṛgu, he became a Brahmarṣi. Vītahavya, O great king, also truly attained the status of a Brahman-knower. (13-31-54)
तस्य गृत्समदः पुत्रो रूपेणेन्द्र इवापरः। शक्रस्त्वमिति यो दैत्यैर्निगृहीतः किलाभवत् ॥१३-३१-५५॥
tasya gṛtsamadaḥ putro rūpeṇendra ivāparaḥ। śakrastvamiti yo daityairnigṛhītaḥ kilābhavat ॥13-31-55॥

His son Gṛtsamada, who was another Indra in form, was addressed by the Daityas as "You are Śakra" and was indeed restrained by them. (13-31-55)
ऋग्वेदे वर्तते चाग्र्या श्रुतिरत्र विशां पते। यत्र गृत्समदो ब्रह्मन्ब्राह्मणैः स महीयते ॥१३-३१-५६॥

(Of Tamas and Prakasha was born, the son, O best of twice-born. Of Prakasha and Vāk Indra became, the best of the victorious. (13-31-60))
O best of the twice-born, from Tamas was born Prakasha as his son. From Prakasha, Vākindra was born, the best among the victorious. (13-31-60)
तस्यात्मजश्च प्रमतिर्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः। घृताच्यां तस्य पुत्रस्तु रुरुर्नामोदपद्यत ॥१३-३१-६१॥
tasyātmajaś ca pramatir veda-vedāṅga-pāragaḥ। ghṛtācyāṃ tasya putras tu rurur nāmodapadyata ॥13-31-61॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; आत्मजः (ātmajaḥ) - son; च (ca) - and; प्रमतिः (pramatiḥ) - Pramati (name); वेद (veda) - Veda; वेदाङ्ग (vedāṅga) - Vedāṅga; पारगः (pāragaḥ) - one who has crossed over; knower; घृताच्याम् (ghṛtācyām) - in Ghṛtācī (name); तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; तु (tu) - but; रुरुः (ruruḥ) - Ruru (name); नाम (nāma) - by name; उदपद्यत (udapadyata) - was born;]
(Of him, the son and Pramati, knower of Veda and Vedāṅga; in Ghṛtācī, his son but Ruru by name was born.)
His son Pramati, who was well-versed in the Veda and Vedāṅgas; in Ghṛtācī, his son named Ruru was born. (13-31-61)
प्रमद्वरायां तु रुरोः पुत्रः समुदपद्यत। शुनको नाम विप्रर्षिर्यस्य पुत्रोऽथ शौनकः ॥१३-३१-६२॥
pramadvaryāṃ tu ruroḥ putraḥ samudapadyata। śunako nāma viprarṣir yasya putro'tha śaunakaḥ ॥13-31-62॥
[प्रमद्वरायाम् (pramadvaryām) - in Pramadvara; (locative); तु (tu) - but; however; रुरोः (ruroḥ) - of Ruru; (genitive); पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; समुदपद्यत (samudapadyata) - was born; arose; शुनकः (śunakaḥ) - Śunaka; (name); नाम (nāma) - by name; विप्रर्षिः (viprarṣiḥ) - brāhmaṇa-sage; यस्य (yasya) - whose; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; अथ (atha) - then; and; शौनकः (śaunakaḥ) - Śaunaka; (name);]
(In Pramadvara, however, of Ruru a son was born. Śunaka by name, a brāhmaṇa-sage, whose son then (was) Śaunaka. (13-31-62))
But in Pramadvara, Ruru had a son. He was the brāhmaṇa-sage named Śunaka, whose son was then Śaunaka. (13-31-62)
एवं विप्रत्वमगमद्वीतहव्यो नराधिपः। भृगोः प्रसादाद्राजेन्द्र क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥१३-३१-६३॥
evaṃ vipratvam agamad vītahavyo narādhipaḥ। bhṛgoḥ prasādād rājendra kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ॥13-31-63॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विप्रत्वम् (vipratvam) - brāhmaṇa-hood; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; वीतहव्यः (vītahavyaḥ) - Vītahavya; नराधिपः (narādhipaḥ) - king; भृगोः (bhṛgoḥ) - of Bhṛgu; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by the grace; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - the kṣatriya; क्षत्रियर्षभ (kṣatriyarṣabha) - bull among kṣatriyas;]
(Thus, brāhmaṇa-hood attained Vītahavya, king, by the grace of Bhṛgu, O king, the kṣatriya, bull among kṣatriyas.)
Thus, O king, Vītahavya, the kṣatriya and foremost among kṣatriyas, attained brāhmaṇa-hood by the grace of Bhṛgu. (13-31-63)
तथैव कथितो वंशो मया गार्त्समदस्तव। विस्तरेण महाराज किमन्यदनुपृच्छसि ॥१३-३१-६४॥
tathaiva kathito vaṃśo mayā gārtsamadas tava। vistareṇa mahārāja kim anyad anupṛcchasi ॥13-31-64॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in that very manner; thus; just so; कथितः (kathitaḥ) - has been told; narrated; वंशः (vaṃśaḥ) - lineage; family; मया (mayā) - by me; गार्त्समदः (gārtsamadaḥ) - Gārtsamadas; (descendants of Gṛtsamada); तव (tava) - your; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; extensively; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; किम् (kim) - what; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; other; अनुपृच्छसि (anupṛcchasi) - you ask; you inquire;]
(Just so, the lineage has been told by me, the Gārtsamadas, your (lineage), in detail, O great king; what else do you ask?)
In this very manner, O great king, I have narrated in detail the lineage of the Gārtsamadas, your ancestors; what else do you wish to ask? (13-31-64)
