Bhishma said.
ब्राह्मणानेव सततं भृशं सम्प्रतिपूजयेत्। एते हि सोमराजान ईश्वराः सुखदुःखयोः ॥१३-३४-१॥
brāhmaṇān eva satataṃ bhṛśaṃ sampratipūjayet। ete hi somarājāna īśvarāḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ ॥13-34-1॥
[ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; (accusative plural); एव (eva) - indeed; only; सततम् (satatam) - always; continually; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - exceedingly; greatly; सम्प्रतिपूजयेत् (sampratipūjayet) - should honor; should worship; एते (ete) - these; (nominative plural); हि (hi) - indeed; for; सोमराजान (somarājān) - lords of Soma; kings of Soma; ईश्वराः (īśvarāḥ) - lords; masters; सुखदुःखयोः (sukhaduḥkhayoḥ) - of happiness and sorrow; (locative dual);]
(Brāhmaṇas indeed always exceedingly should honor; these indeed lords of Soma are lords of happiness and sorrow;)
One should always honor Brāhmaṇas exceedingly; for these are indeed the lords of Soma, the masters of happiness and sorrow. (13-34-1)
एते भोगैरलङ्कारैरन्यैश्चैव किमिच्छकैः। सदा पूज्या नमस्कार्या रक्ष्याश्च पितृवन्नृपैः ॥ अतो राष्ट्रस्य शान्तिर्हि भूतानामिव वासवात् ॥१३-३४-२॥
ete bhogairalaṅkārairanyaiścaiva kimicchakaiḥ। sadā pūjyā namaskāryā rakṣyāśca pitṛvannṛpaiḥ ॥ ato rāṣṭrasya śāntirhi bhūtānāmiva vāsavāt ॥13-34-2॥
[एते (ete) - these; भोगैः (bhogaiḥ) - by enjoyments; अलङ्कारैः (alaṅkāraiḥ) - by ornaments; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; किम् (kim) - what; इच्छकैः (icchakaiḥ) - by desirers; सदा (sadā) - always; पूज्या (pūjyā) - to be worshipped; नमस्कार्या (namaskāryā) - to be saluted; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; च (ca) - and; पितृवत् (pitṛvat) - like a father; नृपैः (nṛpaiḥ) - by kings; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; राष्ट्रस्य (rāṣṭrasya) - of the kingdom; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; हि (hi) - indeed; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; इव (iva) - like; वासवात् (vāsavāt) - from Vāsava (Indra);]
(These, by enjoyments, by ornaments, by others and indeed by desirers, what? Always to be worshipped, to be saluted, to be protected and like a father by kings. Therefore, of the kingdom, peace indeed, of beings, like from Vāsava (Indra). (13-34-2))
What use are these enjoyments, ornaments, and other desires? Those who are always to be worshipped, saluted, and protected by kings as by a father—therefore, the peace of the kingdom is indeed like that of beings from Indra. (13-34-2)
जायतां ब्रह्मवर्चस्वी राष्ट्रे वै ब्राह्मणः शुचिः। महारथश्च राजन्य एष्टव्यः शत्रुतापनः ॥१३-३४-३॥
jāyatāṃ brahmavarcasvī rāṣṭre vai brāhmaṇaḥ śuciḥ। mahārathaś ca rājanya eṣṭavyaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ ॥13-34-3॥
[जायताम् (jāyatām) - may be born; ब्रह्मवर्चस्वी (brahmavarcasvī) - possessing the brilliance of Brahman; राष्ट्रे (rāṣṭre) - in the kingdom; वै (vai) - indeed; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - a Brāhmaṇa; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - a great chariot-warrior; च (ca) - and; राजन्य (rājanya) - a Kṣatriya; एष्टव्यः (eṣṭavyaḥ) - to be desired; शत्रुतापनः (śatrutāpanaḥ) - one who torments enemies;]
(May a Brāhmaṇa possessing the brilliance of Brahman, pure, indeed, be born in the kingdom; and a Kṣatriya, a great chariot-warrior, to be desired, one who torments enemies.)
May there be born in the kingdom a Brāhmaṇa endowed with the brilliance of Brahman and purity, and may a Kṣatriya, a great chariot-warrior, who is desirable and a tormentor of enemies, also arise. (13-34-3)
ब्राह्मणं जातिसम्पन्नं धर्मज्ञं संशितव्रतम्। वासयेत गृहे राजन्न तस्मात्परमस्ति वै ॥१३-३४-४॥
brāhmaṇaṃ jātisampannaṃ dharmajñaṃ saṃśitavratam। vāsayet gṛhe rājann tasmāt param asti vai ॥13-34-4॥
[ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - brāhmaṇa; जातिसम्पन्नं (jātisampannam) - endowed with lineage; धर्मज्ञं (dharmajñam) - knower of dharma; संशितव्रतम् (saṃśitavratam) - firm in vows; वासयेत् (vāsayet) - should cause to dwell; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; परम् (param) - higher; अस्ति (asti) - exists; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(A brāhmaṇa endowed with lineage, a knower of dharma, firm in vows, should be caused to dwell in the house, O king; than that, higher exists indeed.)
O king, a brāhmaṇa who is of good lineage, knows dharma, and is firm in his vows should be made to reside in the house; indeed, there is nothing greater than that. (13-34-4)
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो हविर्दत्तं प्रतिगृह्णन्ति देवताः। पितरः सर्वभूतानां नैतेभ्यो विद्यते परम् ॥१३-३४-५॥
brāhmaṇebhyo havirdattaṃ pratigṛhṇanti devatāḥ। pitaraḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ naitebhyo vidyate param ॥13-34-5॥
[ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; हविः (havis) - offering; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; प्रतिगृह्णन्ति (pratigṛhṇanti) - accept; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - the ancestors; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; न (na) - not; एतेभ्यः (etebhyaḥ) - than these; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; परम् (param) - higher;]
(To the Brāhmaṇas, the offering given is accepted by the deities; the ancestors of all beings—there is nothing higher than these.)
The offerings given to Brāhmaṇas are accepted by the deities; the ancestors of all beings—there is nothing superior to them. (13-34-5)
आदित्यश्चन्द्रमा वायुर्भूमिरापोऽम्बरं दिशः। सर्वे ब्राह्मणमाविश्य सदान्नमुपभुञ्जते ॥१३-३४-६॥
ādityaś candramā vāyur bhūmir āpo 'mbaraṃ diśaḥ। sarve brāhmaṇam āviśya sadā annam upabhuñjate ॥13-34-6॥
[आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - sun; चन्द्रमा (candramā) - moon; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; अम्बरम् (ambaraṃ) - sky; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ब्राह्मणम् (brāhmaṇam) - the Brāhmaṇa; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; सदा (sadā) - always; अन्नम् (annam) - food; उपभुञ्जते (upabhuñjate) - enjoy;]
(Sun; moon; wind; earth; waters; sky; directions; all, having entered the Brāhmaṇa, always enjoy food.)
The sun, moon, wind, earth, waters, sky, and directions—all these, having entered the Brāhmaṇa, always partake of food. (13-34-6)
न तस्याश्नन्ति पितरो यस्य विप्रा न भुञ्जते। देवाश्चाप्यस्य नाश्नन्ति पापस्य ब्राह्मणद्विषः ॥१३-३४-७॥
na tasyāśnanti pitaro yasya viprā na bhuñjate। devāś cāpy asya nāśnanti pāpasya brāhmaṇadviṣaḥ ॥13-34-7॥
[न (na) - not; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अश्नन्ति (aśnanti) - eat; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; यस्य (yasya) - whose; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; न (na) - not; भुञ्जते (bhuñjate) - enjoy; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अस्य (asya) - of him; न (na) - not; अश्नन्ति (aśnanti) - eat; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of the sinful; ब्राह्मणद्विषः (brāhmaṇadviṣaḥ) - haters of Brāhmaṇas;]
(Not of him eat ancestors whose Brāhmaṇas not enjoy. Gods and also of him not eat of the sinful haters of Brāhmaṇas. (13-34-7))
The ancestors do not partake of the offerings of one whose food is not enjoyed by Brāhmaṇas. The gods also do not eat the offerings of the sinful hater of Brāhmaṇas. (13-34-7)
ब्राह्मणेषु तु तुष्टेषु प्रीयन्ते पितरः सदा। तथैव देवता राजन्नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥१३-३४-८॥
brāhmaṇeṣu tu tuṣṭeṣu prīyante pitaraḥ sadā। tathaiva devatā rājannātra kāryā vicāraṇā ॥13-34-8॥
[ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in the Brāhmaṇas; तु (tu) - but; तुष्टेषु (tuṣṭeṣu) - when satisfied; प्रीयन्ते (prīyante) - are pleased; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - the ancestors; सदा (sadā) - always; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; देवता (devatā) - the deities; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अत्र (atra) - here; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - consideration;]
(In the Brāhmaṇas but when satisfied are pleased the ancestors always. In the same way the deities, O king, here should be done consideration.)
When the Brāhmaṇas are satisfied, the ancestors are always pleased; in the same way, O king, the deities are pleased. Therefore, here, no further consideration is necessary. (13-34-8)
तथैव तेऽपि प्रीयन्ते येषां भवति तद्धविः। न च प्रेत्य विनश्यन्ति गच्छन्ति परमां गतिम् ॥१३-३४-९॥
tathaiva te'pi prīyante yeṣāṃ bhavati taddhaviḥ। na ca pretya vinaśyanti gacchanti paramāṃ gatim ॥13-34-9॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; प्रीयन्ते (prīyante) - are pleased; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; तत् (tat) - that; हविः (haviḥ) - offering; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; विनश्यन्ति (vinaśyanti) - are destroyed; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; गतिम् (gatim) - state;]
(In the same way, they also are pleased, of whom that offering becomes; not and after death are destroyed, go to the supreme state.)
In the same way, those to whom that offering belongs are also pleased; after death, they are not destroyed but go to the supreme state. (13-34-9)
येन येनैव हविषा ब्राह्मणांस्तर्पयेन्नरः। तेन तेनैव प्रीयन्ते पितरो देवतास्तथा ॥१३-३४-१०॥
yena yenaiva haviṣā brāhmaṇāṁstarpayennaraḥ। tena tenaiva prīyante pitaro devatāstathā ॥13-34-10॥
[येन (yena) - by which; येन (yena) - by which; एव (eva) - indeed; हविषा (haviṣā) - with oblation; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - the Brāhmaṇas; तर्पयेत् (tarpayet) - should satisfy; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; तेन (tena) - with that; तेन (tena) - with that; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रीयन्ते (prīyante) - are pleased; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - the ancestors; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the deities; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(By which, by which indeed, with oblation, the Brāhmaṇas, should satisfy, a man; with that, with that indeed, are pleased, the ancestors, the deities, likewise.)
With whatever oblation a man satisfies the Brāhmaṇas, with that very oblation the ancestors and likewise the deities are pleased. (13-34-10)
ब्राह्मणादेव तद्भूतं प्रभवन्ति यतः प्रजाः। यतश्चायं प्रभवति प्रेत्य यत्र च गच्छति ॥१३-३४-११॥
brāhmaṇādeva tadbhūtaṃ prabhavanti yataḥ prajāḥ। yataścāyaṃ prabhavati pretya yatra ca gacchati ॥13-34-11॥
[ब्राह्मणात् (brāhmaṇāt) - from the Brāhmaṇa; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - become; प्रभवन्ति (prabhavanti) - originate; यतः (yataḥ) - from whom; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; यतः (yataḥ) - from whom; च (ca) - and; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्रभवति (prabhavati) - arises; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed; यत्र (yatra) - where; च (ca) - and; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes;]
(From the Brāhmaṇa indeed that which has become originates, from whom creatures (originate); and from whom this (being) arises, having departed, where and goes.)
Indeed, from the Brāhmaṇa all that exists originates, from whom all creatures arise; and from whom this being arises, and having departed, to whom it goes. (13-34-11)
वेदैष मार्गं स्वर्गस्य तथैव नरकस्य च। आगतानागते चोभे ब्राह्मणो द्विपदां वरः ॥ ब्राह्मणो भरतश्रेष्ठ स्वधर्मं वेद मेधया ॥१३-३४-१२॥
vedaiṣa mārgaṃ svargasya tathaiva narakasya ca। āgatānāgate cobhe brāhmaṇo dvipadāṃ varaḥ ॥ brāhmaṇo bharataśreṣṭha svadharmaṃ veda medhayā ॥13-34-12॥
[वेदैष (vedaiṣa) - by the Vedas this; मार्गं (mārgaṃ) - path; स्वर्गस्य (svargasya) - of heaven; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; नरकस्य (narakasya) - of hell; च (ca) - and; आगतानागते (āgatānāgate) - the come and not come (past and future); च (ca) - and; उभे (ubhe) - both; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; द्विपदां (dvipadāṃ) - of bipeds; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - the brāhmaṇa; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; स्वधर्मं (svadharmaṃ) - own duty; वेद (veda) - knows; मेधया (medhayā) - by intelligence;]
(By the Vedas this path of heaven, likewise of hell and both the come and not come, the brāhmaṇa, the best of bipeds, the brāhmaṇa, O best of the Bharatas, knows own duty by intelligence.)
The brāhmaṇa, the best among bipeds, knows by intelligence the path to heaven and hell, as well as both the past and future, through the Vedas; O best of the Bharatas, the brāhmaṇa knows his own duty by wisdom. (13-34-12)
ये चैनमनुवर्तन्ते ते न यान्ति पराभवम्। न ते प्रेत्य विनश्यन्ति गच्छन्ति न पराभवम् ॥१३-३४-१३॥
ye ca enam anuvartante te na yānti parābhavam। na te pretya vinaśyanti gacchanti na parābhavam ॥13-34-13॥
[ये (ye) - who; (plural); च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; (him); अनुवर्तन्ते (anuvartante) - follow; (they); ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; यान्ति (yānti) - go; (they); पराभवम् (parābhavam) - ruin; destruction; न (na) - not; ते (te) - they; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having died; after death; विनश्यन्ति (vinaśyanti) - perish; (they); गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; (they); न (na) - not; पराभवम् (parābhavam) - ruin; destruction;]
(Who and this follow, they not go to ruin. Not they, having died, perish, go not to ruin.)
Those who follow him do not go to ruin. Even after death, they do not perish; they do not go to destruction. (13-34-13)
ये ब्राह्मणमुखात्प्राप्तं प्रतिगृह्णन्ति वै वचः। कृतात्मानो महात्मानस्ते न यान्ति पराभवम् ॥१३-३४-१४॥
ye brāhmaṇamukhātprāptaṃ pratigṛhṇanti vai vacaḥ। kṛtātmāno mahātmānas te na yānti parābhavam ॥13-34-14॥
[ये (ye) - who; ब्राह्मणमुखात् (brāhmaṇamukhāt) - from the mouth of a brāhmaṇa; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - obtained; प्रतिगृह्णन्ति (pratigṛhṇanti) - accept; वै (vai) - indeed; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; कृतात्मानः (kṛtātmānaḥ) - self-controlled; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; ते (te) - they; न (na) - not; यान्ति (yānti) - go; पराभवम् (parābhavam) - defeat;]
(Who from the mouth of a brāhmaṇa obtained accept indeed speech; self-controlled great-souled they not go to defeat.)
Those who accept the words obtained from the mouth of a brāhmaṇa—those self-controlled and great-souled ones—they do not come to defeat. (13-34-14)
क्षत्रियाणां प्रतपतां तेजसा च बलेन च। ब्राह्मणेष्वेव शाम्यन्ति तेजांसि च बलानि च ॥१३-३४-१५॥
kṣatriyāṇāṃ pratapatāṃ tejasā ca balena ca। brāhmaṇeṣveva śāmyanti tejāṃsi ca balāni ca ॥13-34-15॥
[क्षत्रियाणां (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; प्रतपतां (pratapatām) - of those blazing; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; च (ca) - and; बलेन (balena) - by strength; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in the brāhmaṇas; एव (eva) - indeed; शाम्यन्ति (śāmyanti) - are pacified; तेजांसि (tejāṃsi) - the brilliances; च (ca) - and; बलानि (balāni) - the strengths; च (ca) - and;]
(Of the kṣatriyas blazing, by brilliance and by strength, in the brāhmaṇas indeed are pacified the brilliances and the strengths.)
The brilliance and strength of the blazing kṣatriyas are pacified only in the brāhmaṇas; their energies and powers subside in them. (13-34-15)
भृगवोऽजयंस्तालजङ्घान्नीपानङ्गिरसोऽजयन्। भरद्वाजो वैतहव्यानैलांश्च भरतर्षभ ॥१३-३४-१६॥
bhṛgavo'jayaṃstālajaṅghānnīpānaṅgiraso'jayan। bharadvājo vaitahavyānailāṃśca bharatarṣabha ॥13-34-16॥
[भृगवः (bhṛgavaḥ) - the Bhṛgus; (a family of sages); अजयं (ajayan) - conquered; तालजङ्घान् (tālajaṅghān) - the Tāla-jaṅghas; (a tribe); नीपान् (nīpān) - the Nīpas; (a tribe); अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - the Aṅgirasas; (a family of sages); अजयन् (ajayan) - conquered; भरद्वाजः (bharadvājaḥ) - Bharadvāja; (a sage); वैतहव्याः (vaitahavyāḥ) - the Vaitahavyas; (a tribe); ऐलान् (ailān) - the Ailas; (descendants of Ila); च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas;]
(The Bhṛgus conquered the Tāla-jaṅghas and the Nīpas; the Aṅgirasas conquered (them); Bharadvāja (conquered) the Vaitahavyas and the Ailas, O bull among the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, the Bhṛgus conquered the Tāla-jaṅghas and the Nīpas; the Aṅgirasas also conquered them. Bharadvāja conquered the Vaitahavyas and the Ailas. (13-34-16)
चित्रायुधांश्चाप्यजयन्नेते कृष्णाजिनध्वजाः। प्रक्षिप्याथ च कुम्भान्वै पारगामिनमारभेत् ॥१३-३४-१७॥
citrāyudhāṁś cāpy ajayann ete kṛṣṇājinadhvajāḥ। prakṣipyātha ca kumbhān vai pāragāminam ārabhet ॥13-34-17॥
[चित्रायुधान् (citrāyudhān) - those with varied weapons; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अजयन् (ajayan) - conquered; एते (ete) - these; कृष्णाजिनध्वजाः (kṛṣṇājinadhvajāḥ) - those whose banner is black antelope skin; प्रक्षिप्य (prakṣipya) - having thrown; अथ (atha) - then; च (ca) - and; कुम्भान् (kumbhān) - pots; वै (vai) - indeed; पारगामिनम् (pāragāminam) - that which goes to the other shore; आरभेत् (ārabhet) - he began;]
(Those with varied weapons and also these whose banner is black antelope skin conquered; having thrown then and indeed pots, he began that which goes to the other shore.)
Those with various weapons, and also those whose banners bore black antelope skin, conquered; then, having thrown the pots, he began the act of crossing to the other shore. (13-34-17)
यत्किञ्चित्कथ्यते लोके श्रूयते पश्यतेऽपि वा। सर्वं तद्ब्राह्मणेष्वेव गूढोऽग्निरिव दारुषु ॥१३-३४-१८॥
yatkiñcitkathyate loke śrūyate paśyate'pi vā। sarvaṃ tadbrāhmaṇeṣveva gūḍho'gniriva dāruṣu ॥13-34-18॥
[यत् (yat) - whatever; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is spoken; लोके (loke) - in the world; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; पश्यते (paśyate) - is seen; अपि (api) - even; वा (vā) - or; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; ब्राह्मणेषु (brāhmaṇeṣu) - in the Brāhmaṇas; एव (eva) - indeed; गूढः (gūḍhaḥ) - hidden; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; दारुषु (dāruṣu) - in wood;]
(Whatever anything is spoken in the world, is heard, or is seen—even all that, indeed, in the Brāhmaṇas is hidden, like fire in wood.)
Whatever is spoken, heard, or seen in the world, all of that is indeed hidden within the Brāhmaṇas, just as fire is hidden in wood. (13-34-18)
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। संवादं वासुदेवस्य पृथ्व्याश्च भरतर्षभ ॥१३-३४-१९॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। saṃvādaṃ vāsudevasya pṛthvyāś ca bharatarṣabha ॥13-34-19॥

ब्राह्मणानेव सेवेत पवित्रं ह्येतदुत्तमम्। ब्राह्मणान्सेवमानस्य रजः सर्वं प्रणश्यति ॥१३-३४-२१॥
brāhmaṇān eva seveta pavitraṃ hy etad uttamam। brāhmaṇān sevamānasya rajaḥ sarvaṃ praṇaśyati ॥13-34-21॥

(One should serve only brāhmaṇas; this indeed is the supreme purifier. Of one serving brāhmaṇas, all impurity is destroyed. (13-34-21))

ब्राह्मणा यं प्रशंसन्ति पुरुषः स प्रवर्धते। अथ यो ब्राह्मणाक्रुष्टः पराभवति सोऽचिरात् ॥१३-३४-२३॥
brāhmaṇā yaṃ praśaṃsanti puruṣaḥ sa pravardhate। atha yo brāhmaṇākrūṣṭaḥ parābhavati so'cirāt ॥13-34-23॥
[ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - by the Brāhmaṇas; यं (yaṃ) - whom; प्रशंसन्ति (praśaṃsanti) - praise; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; स (sa) - he; प्रवर्धते (pravardhate) - prospers; अथ (atha) - but; यः (yaḥ) - who; ब्राह्मणाक्रुष्टः (brāhmaṇākrūṣṭaḥ) - cursed by Brāhmaṇas; पराभवति (parābhavati) - is destroyed; सः (saḥ) - he; अचिरात् (acirāt) - soon;]
(The man whom the Brāhmaṇas praise, he prospers. But he who is cursed by Brāhmaṇas is destroyed soon. "13-34-23")
A man praised by Brāhmaṇas prospers, but one who is cursed by Brāhmaṇas is quickly ruined. (13-34-23)
यथा महार्णवे क्षिप्त आमलोष्टो विनश्यति। तथा दुश्चरितं कर्म पराभावाय कल्पते ॥१३-३४-२४॥
yathā mahārṇave kṣipta ā-maloṣṭaḥ vinaśyati। tathā duś-caritaṃ karma parābhāvāya kalpate ॥13-34-24॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; in the manner; as; in which manner; महार्णवे (mahārṇave) - in the great ocean; क्षिप्त (kṣipta) - thrown; cast; आमलोष्टः (ā-maloṣṭaḥ) - an unclean clod; impure lump of earth; विनश्यति (vinaśyati) - perishes; is destroyed; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; likewise; दुश्चरितं (duś-caritaṃ) - bad conduct; evil action; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; पराभावाय (parābhāvāya) - for destruction; for defeat; for ruin; कल्पते (kalpate) - becomes; is fit for; leads to;]
(Just as an unclean clod thrown into the great ocean perishes, so bad conduct or evil action leads to ruin.)
Just as an impure lump of earth thrown into the great ocean is destroyed, so too, evil actions lead to one's downfall. (13-34-24)
पश्य चन्द्रे कृतं लक्ष्म समुद्रे लवणोदकम्। तथा भगसहस्रेण महेन्द्रं परिचिह्नितम् ॥१३-३४-२५॥
paśya candre kṛtaṃ lakṣma samudre lavaṇodakam। tathā bhagasahasreṇa mahendraṃ paricihnitam ॥13-34-25॥

तेषामेव प्रभावेन सहस्रनयनो ह्यसौ। शतक्रतुः समभवत्पश्य माधव यादृशम् ॥१३-३४-२६॥

O Mādhava, see how, by the power of those very ones, this thousand-eyed, the hundred-sacrificer, became as he is. (13-34-26)
इच्छन्भूतिं च कीर्तिं च लोकांश्च मधुसूदन। ब्राह्मणानुमते तिष्ठेत्पुरुषः शुचिरात्मवान् ॥१३-३४-२७॥
icchanbhūtiṃ ca kīrtiṃ ca lokāṃśca madhusūdana। brāhmaṇānumate tiṣṭhetpuruṣaḥ śucirātmavān ॥13-34-27॥
[इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; भूतिं (bhūtiṃ) - prosperity; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिं (kīrtiṃ) - fame; च (ca) - and; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; च (ca) - and; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; ब्राह्मण (brāhmaṇa) - of the Brāhmaṇa; अनुमते (anumate) - with approval; तिष्ठेत् (tiṣṭhet) - should remain; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed;]
(Desiring prosperity and fame and worlds, O Madhusūdana, with the approval of the Brāhmaṇa, a pure and self-possessed man should remain.)
O Madhusūdana, if one desires prosperity, fame, and the worlds, a pure and self-controlled man should remain with the approval of the Brāhmaṇa. (13-34-27)
इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मेदिन्या मधुसूदनः। साधु साध्वित्यथेत्युक्त्वा मेदिनीं प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥१३-३४-२८॥
ity etad vacanaṃ śrutvā medinyā madhusūdanaḥ। sādhu sādhu iti atha iti uktvā medinīṃ pratyapūjayat ॥13-34-28॥

Having heard this speech from Medinī, Madhusūdana said, "Well done, well done," and then honored Medinī in return. (13-34-28)
एतां श्रुत्वोपमां पार्थ प्रयतो ब्राह्मणर्षभान्। सततं पूजयेथास्त्वं ततः श्रेयोऽभिपत्स्यसे ॥१३-३४-२९॥
etāṃ śrutvopamāṃ pārtha prayato brāhmaṇarṣabhān। satataṃ pūjayethāstvaṃ tataḥ śreyo'bhipatsyase ॥13-34-29॥
[एताम् (etām) - this; (accusative singular feminine) श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; उपमाम् (upamām) - comparison; (accusative singular feminine) पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; (Arjuna; vocative singular) प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - with effort; (nominative singular masculine) ब्राह्मणर्षभान् (brāhmaṇarṣabhān) - the foremost among Brāhmaṇas; (accusative plural) सततम् (satatam) - always; पूजयेथाः (pūjayethāḥ) - you should worship; (second person singular optative) त्वम् (tvam) - you; ततः (tataḥ) - then; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the better; (accusative singular neuter) अभिपत्स्यसे (abhipatsyase) - you will attain; (second person singular future);]
(Having heard this comparison, O Pārtha, with effort the foremost among Brāhmaṇas always you should worship; then the better you will attain;)
O Pārtha, having heard this comparison, you should always worship the foremost among Brāhmaṇas with effort; then you will attain the highest good. (13-34-29)
