Yudhiṣṭhira said.
इमे वै मानवा लोके स्त्रीषु सज्जन्त्यभीक्ष्णशः। मोहेन परमाविष्टा दैवादिष्टेन पार्थिव ॥ स्त्रियश्च पुरुषेष्वेव प्रत्यक्षं लोकसाक्षिकम् ॥१३-३९-१॥
ime vai mānavā loke strīṣu sajjantyabhīkṣṇaśaḥ। mohena paramāviṣṭā daivādiṣṭena pārthiva ॥ striyaś ca puruṣeṣveva pratyakṣaṃ lokasākṣikam ॥13-39-1॥
[इमे (ime) - these; वै (vai) - indeed; मानवा (mānavā) - men; लोके (loke) - in the world; स्त्रीषु (strīṣu) - in women; सज्जन्ति (sajjanti) - attach themselves; अभीक्ष्णशः (abhīkṣṇaśaḥ) - constantly; मोहेन (mohena) - by delusion; परमाविष्टा (paramāviṣṭā) - completely overcome; दैवादिष्टेन (daivādiṣṭena) - by what is ordained by fate; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; पुरुषेषु (puruṣeṣu) - in men; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रत्यक्षम् (pratyakṣam) - directly; लोकसाक्षिकम् (lokasākṣikam) - witnessed by the world;]
(These indeed men in the world in women attach themselves constantly; by delusion completely overcome by what is ordained by fate, O king. Women and in men indeed directly witnessed by the world.)
O king, these men in the world are constantly attached to women, being completely overcome by delusion and what is ordained by fate. Likewise, women are attached to men; this is directly witnessed by the world. (13-39-1)
अत्र मे संशयस्तीव्रो हृदि सम्परिवर्तते। कथमासां नराः सङ्गं कुर्वते कुरुनन्दन ॥ स्त्रियो वा तेषु रज्यन्ते विरज्यन्तेऽथ वा पुनः ॥१३-३९-२॥
atra me saṁśayastīvro hṛdi samparivartate। kathamāsāṁ narāḥ saṅgaṁ kurvate kurunandana ॥ striyo vā teṣu rajyante virajyante'tha vā punaḥ ॥13-39-2॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; मे (me) - my; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; तीव्रः (tīvraḥ) - intense; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (my) heart; सम्परिवर्तते (samparivartate) - revolves; कथम् (katham) - how; आसाम् (āsām) - of these (women); नराः (narāḥ) - men; सङ्गम् (saṅgam) - association; कुर्वते (kurvate) - make; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; वा (vā) - or; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; रज्यन्ते (rajyante) - become attached; विरज्यन्ते (virajyante) - become detached; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Here my intense doubt revolves in (my) heart. How do men make association with these, O joy of the Kurus? Or do women become attached to them, or become detached again or?)
Here, an intense doubt turns in my heart: How do men form associations with these, O joy of the Kurus? Or do women become attached to them, or do they become detached again? (13-39-2)
इति ताः पुरुषव्याघ्र कथं शक्याः स्म रक्षितुम्। प्रमदाः पुरुषेणेह तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-३९-३॥
iti tāḥ puruṣavyāghra kathaṁ śakyāḥ sma rakṣitum। pramadāḥ puruṣeṇeha tanme vyākhyātumarhasi ॥13-39-3॥
[इति (iti) - thus; ताः (tāḥ) - those (feminine); पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - possible (to be); स्म (sma) - indeed; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; प्रमदाः (pramadāḥ) - women; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a man; इह (iha) - here; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; व्याख्यातुम् (vyākhyātum) - to explain; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(Thus those, tiger among men, how is it possible indeed to protect? Women by a man here, that to me to explain you ought. (13-39-3))
Thus, O tiger among men, how is it possible to protect those women here by a man? You ought to explain that to me. (13-39-3)
एता हि मयमायाभिर्वञ्चयन्तीह मानवान्। न चासां मुच्यते कश्चित्पुरुषो हस्तमागतः ॥ गावो नवतृणानीव गृह्णन्त्येव नवान्नवान् ॥१३-३९-४॥
etā hi mayamāyābhir vañcayantīha mānavān। na cāsāṃ mucyate kaścit puruṣo hastam āgataḥ ॥ gāvo navatṛṇān iva gṛhṇanty eva navān navān ॥13-39-4॥
[एता (etā) - these (feminine); हि (hi) - indeed; मयमायाभिः (mayamāyābhiḥ) - by Māyā-illusions; वञ्चयन्ति (vañcayanti) - deceive; इह (iha) - here; मानवान् (mānavān) - men; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; असां (asāṃ) - from these (feminine); मुच्यते (mucyate) - is freed; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; हस्तम् (hastam) - hand; आगतः (āgataḥ) - come; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; नवतृणानि (navatṛṇāni) - new grasses; इव (iva) - like; गृह्णन्ति (gṛhṇanti) - take; एव (eva) - indeed; नवान् (navān) - new; नवान् (navān) - new;]
(These indeed by Māyā-illusions deceive here men. Not from these is freed any man who has come to the hand. Cows, like new grasses, indeed take new, new.)
These, indeed, with Māyā's illusions, deceive men here. No man who has come into their grasp is freed from them. Just as cows always take fresh grass, so too do they continually seize the new. (13-39-4)
शम्बरस्य च या माया या माया नमुचेरपि। बलेः कुम्भीनसेश्चैव सर्वास्ता योषितो विदुः ॥१३-३९-५॥
śambarasya ca yā māyā yā māyā namucer api। baleḥ kumbhīnaśeś caiva sarvāḥ tā yoṣito viduḥ ॥13-39-5॥
[शम्बरस्य (śambarasya) - of Śambara;’ च (ca) - and; या (yā) - which; माया (māyā) - illusion; या (yā) - which; माया (māyā) - illusion; नमुचेरपि (namucer api) - of Namuci also; बलेः (baleḥ) - of Bali; कुम्भीनसेः (kumbhīnaśeḥ) - of Kumbhīnaśa; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; ता (tā) - those; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women; विदुः (viduḥ) - knew;]
(And the illusion of Śambara, the illusion of Namuci also, of Bali, of Kumbhīnaśa, and indeed all those, the women knew.)
The women knew all the illusions of Śambara, Namuci, Bali, and Kumbhīnaśa. (13-39-5)
हसन्तं प्रहसन्त्येता रुदन्तं प्ररुदन्ति च। अप्रियं प्रियवाक्यैश्च गृह्णते कालयोगतः ॥१३-३९-६॥
hasantaṃ prahasanty etā rudantaṃ prarudanti ca। apriyaṃ priyavākyaiś ca gṛhṇate kālayogataḥ ॥13-39-6॥
[हसन्तं (hasantam) - laughing; (one who is) laughing; प्रहसन्ति (prahasanti) - they laugh at; they ridicule; एता (etā) - these (women); रुदन्तं (rudantam) - crying; (one who is) crying; प्ररुदन्ति (prarudanti) - they cry at; they weep over; च (ca) - and; अप्रियं (apriyam) - unpleasant; disagreeable; प्रियवाक्यैः (priyavākyaiḥ) - with pleasant words; च (ca) - and; गृह्णते (gṛhṇate) - they accept; they take; कालयोगतः (kālayogataḥ) - according to the conjunction of time; due to the influence of time;]
(These (women) laugh at one who is laughing, and they ridicule; they cry at one who is crying, and they weep over; and they accept the unpleasant with pleasant words, according to the conjunction of time.)
These women laugh at those who laugh and ridicule them; they cry at those who cry and weep over them; and, according to the influence of time, they accept what is unpleasant with pleasant words. (13-39-6)
उशना वेद यच्छास्त्रं यच्च वेद बृहस्पतिः। स्त्रीबुद्ध्या न विशिष्येते ताः स्म रक्ष्याः कथं नरैः ॥१३-३९-७॥
uśanā veda yac chāstraṃ yac ca veda bṛhaspatiḥ। strībuddhyā na viśiṣyete tāḥ sma rakṣyāḥ kathaṃ naraiḥ ॥13-39-7॥
[उशना (uśanā) - Uśanas (Śukra); वेद (veda) - knows; यत् (yat) - which; शास्त्रं (śāstraṃ) - treatise; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; वेद (veda) - knows; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati; स्त्रीबुद्ध्या (strībuddhyā) - with the intellect of a woman; न (na) - not; विशिष्येते (viśiṣyete) - are distinguished; ताः (tāḥ) - they; स्म (sma) - indeed; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men;]
(Uśanas knows which treatise, and which Bṛhaspati knows; with the intellect of a woman, they are not distinguished; they indeed are to be protected; how by men?)
Whatever treatise Uśanas knows, and whatever Bṛhaspati knows, with the intellect of a woman, they are not distinguished; therefore, how should they be protected by men? (13-39-7)
अनृतं सत्यमित्याहुः सत्यं चापि तथानृतम्। इति यास्ताः कथं वीर संरक्ष्याः पुरुषैरिह ॥१३-३९-८॥
anṛtaṃ satyam ity āhuḥ satyaṃ cāpi tathānṛtam। iti yās tāḥ kathaṃ vīra saṃrakṣyāḥ puruṣair iha ॥13-39-8॥
[अनृतम् (anṛtam) - untruth; falsehood; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; इति (iti) - thus; so; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; सत्यं (satyam) - truth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - likewise; in the same way; अनृतम् (anṛtam) - untruth; falsehood; इति (iti) - thus; so; याः (yāḥ) - which (feminine plural); ताः (tāḥ) - those (feminine plural); कथम् (katham) - how; वीर (vīra) - hero; brave one; संरक्ष्याः (saṃrakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; इह (iha) - here; in this world;]
(Untruth (is) truth, thus they say; truth also likewise (is) untruth, thus; which (women) those, how, O hero, to be protected by men here (in this world). (13-39-8))
They say that untruth is truth, and likewise, truth is also untruth; O hero, how are such women to be protected by men here? (13-39-8)
स्त्रीणां बुद्ध्युपनिष्कर्षादर्थशास्त्राणि शत्रुहन्। बृहस्पतिप्रभृतिभिर्मन्ये सद्भिः कृतानि वै ॥१३-३९-९॥
strīṇāṃ buddhy-upaniṣkarṣād arthaśāstrāṇi śatruhan। bṛhaspati-prabhṛtibhir manye sadbhiḥ kṛtāni vai ॥13-39-9॥
[स्त्रीणां (strīṇām) - of women; बुद्धि-उपनिष्कर्षात् (buddhi-upaniṣkarṣāt) - from the extraction of intelligence; अर्थशास्त्राणि (arthaśāstrāṇi) - treatises on polity; शत्रुहन् (śatruhan) - destroyer of enemies; बृहस्पति-प्रभृतिभिः (bṛhaspati-prabhṛtibhiḥ) - by Bṛhaspati and others; मन्ये (manye) - I think; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the good; कृतानि (kṛtāni) - made; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Of women, from the extraction of intelligence, treatises on polity, destroyer of enemies, by Bṛhaspati and others, I think, by the good, made, indeed.)
I think that the treatises on polity, which destroy enemies, were indeed composed by the wise such as Bṛhaspati, by extracting the intelligence of women. (13-39-9)
सम्पूज्यमानाः पुरुषैर्विकुर्वन्ति मनो नृषु। अपास्ताश्च तथा राजन्विकुर्वन्ति मनः स्त्रियः ॥१३-३९-१०॥
sampūjyamānāḥ puruṣairvikurvanti mano nṛṣu। apāstāśca tathā rājanvikurvanti manaḥ striyaḥ ॥13-39-10॥
[सम्पूज्यमानाः (sampūjyamānāḥ) - being honored; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; विकुर्वन्ति (vikurvanti) - alter; मन् (manas) - mind; नृषु (nṛṣu) - among men; अपास्ताः (apāstāḥ) - being rejected; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - similarly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विकुर्वन्ति (vikurvanti) - alter; मन् (manaḥ) - mind; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women;]
(Being honored by men, (they) alter (their) mind among men; being rejected also, similarly, O king, women alter (their) mind.)
When honored by men, women change their minds among men; when rejected, O king, women likewise change their minds. (13-39-10)
कस्ताः शक्तो रक्षितुं स्यादिति मे संशयो महान्। तन्मे ब्रूहि महाबाहो कुरूणां वंशवर्धन ॥१३-३९-११॥
kastāḥ śakto rakṣituṃ syāditi me saṃśayo mahān। tanme brūhi mahābāho kurūṇāṃ vaṃśavardhana ॥13-39-11॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; ताः (tāḥ) - those (women); शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; महान् (mahān) - great; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; वंशवर्धन (vaṃśavardhana) - increaser of the lineage;]
(Who those able to protect would be, thus my doubt great. That to me tell, O mighty-armed, increaser of the lineage of the Kurus.)
Who is able to protect those women? This is my great doubt. Tell me that, O mighty-armed, increaser of the Kuru lineage. (13-39-11)
यदि शक्या कुरुश्रेष्ठ रक्षा तासां कथञ्चन। कर्तुं वा कृतपूर्वा वा तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-३९-१२॥
yadi śakyā kuruśreṣṭha rakṣā tāsāṃ kathaṃcana। kartuṃ vā kṛtapūrvā vā tanme vyākhyātumarhasi ॥13-39-12॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; तासां (tāsāṃ) - of them; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; वा (vā) - or; कृतपूर्वा (kṛtapūrvā) - done before; वा (vā) - or; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; व्याख्यातुम् (vyākhyātum) - to explain; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(If possible, O best of the Kurus, protection of them in any way to do or done before or that to me to explain you ought.)
O best of the Kurus, if it is possible to protect them in any way, or if such protection has been done before, you ought to explain that to me. (13-39-12)
