एवमेतन्महाबाहो नात्र मिथ्यास्ति किञ्चन। यथा ब्रवीषि कौरव्य नारीं प्रति जनाधिप ॥१३-४०-१॥
evam etan mahābāho na atra mithyā asti kiñcana। yathā bravīṣi kauravya nārīṃ prati janādhipa ॥13-40-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; एतत् (etat) - this; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsehood; अस्ति (asti) - is; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; ब्रवीषि (bravīṣi) - you speak; you say; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; नारीम् (nārīm) - woman; प्रति (prati) - towards; regarding; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people; king;]
(Thus this, O mighty-armed, not here falsehood is anything; as you speak, O Kauravya, regarding the woman, O lord of people;)
O mighty-armed, there is nothing false here in this matter; as you say, O Kauravya, regarding the woman, O king. (13-40-1)
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि इतिहासं पुरातनम्। यथा रक्षा कृता पूर्वं विपुलेन महात्मना ॥१३-४०-२॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi itihāsaṃ purātanam। yathā rakṣā kṛtā pūrvaṃ vipulena mahātmanā ॥13-40-2॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall narrate; इतिहासं (itihāsaṃ) - history; पुरातनम् (purātanam) - ancient; यथा (yathā) - as; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; कृता (kṛtā) - was done; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; विपुलेन (vipulena) - by Vipula; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(Here to you I shall narrate the ancient history; as protection was done formerly by Vipula, by the great-souled one.)
Here I will tell you the ancient story of how protection was once provided by the great-souled Vipula. (13-40-2)
प्रमदाश्च यथा सृष्टा ब्रह्मणा भरतर्षभ। यदर्थं तच्च ते तात प्रवक्ष्ये वसुधाधिप ॥१३-४०-३॥
pramadāś ca yathā sṛṣṭā brahmaṇā bharatarṣabha। yadarthaṃ tac ca te tāta pravakṣye vasudhādhipa ॥13-40-3॥
[प्रमदाः (pramadāḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; यदर्थं (yad-artham) - for what purpose; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; तात (tāta) - dear one; प्रवक्ष्ये (pravakṣye) - I shall explain; वसुधाधिप (vasudhādhipa) - O lord of the earth;]
(Women and as created by Brahmā, O bull among the Bharatas, for what purpose that and to you, dear one, I shall explain, O lord of the earth.)
O lord of the earth, O dear one, I shall explain to you for what purpose women were created by Brahmā, O bull among the Bharatas. (13-40-3)
न हि स्त्रीभ्य परं पुत्र पापीयः किञ्चिदस्ति वै। अग्निर्हि प्रमदा दीप्तो मायाश्च मयजा विभो ॥ क्षुरधारा विषं सर्पो मृत्युरित्येकतः स्त्रियः ॥१३-४०-४॥
na hi strībhyah paraṃ putra pāpīyaḥ kiñcid asti vai। agnir hi pramadā dīpto māyāś ca mayajā vibho॥ kṣuradhārā viṣaṃ sarpo mṛtyur iti ekataḥ striyaḥ॥13-40-4॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; स्त्रीभ्यः (strībhyah) - than women; परं (paraṃ) - beyond; पुत्र (putra) - O son; पापीयः (pāpīyaḥ) - more sinful; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; अस्ति (asti) - is; वै (vai) - indeed; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; हि (hi) - indeed; प्रमदा (pramadā) - woman; दीप्तः (dīptaḥ) - blazing; मायाः (māyāḥ) - illusions; च (ca) - and; मयजा (mayajā) - born of Māyā; विभो (vibho) - O lord; क्षुरधारा (kṣuradhārā) - razor's edge; विषं (viṣaṃ) - poison; सर्पः (sarpaḥ) - serpent; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; इति (iti) - thus; एकतः (ekataḥ) - on one side; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women;]
(Not indeed than women beyond, O son, more sinful anything is indeed. Fire indeed woman blazing, illusions and born of Māyā, O lord. Razor's edge, poison, serpent, death—thus on one side, women.)
O son, there is indeed nothing more sinful than women. Woman is like blazing fire, illusion, and born of Māyā, O lord. Razor's edge, poison, serpent, death—on one side, and women on the other. (13-40-4)
इमाः प्रजा महाबाहो धार्मिका इति नः श्रुतम्। स्वयं गच्छन्ति देवत्वं ततो देवानियाद्भयम् ॥१३-४०-५॥
imāḥ prajā mahābāho dhārmikā iti naḥ śrutam। svayaṃ gacchanti devatvaṃ tato devāniyādbhayaṃ ॥13-40-5॥
[इमाः (imāḥ) - these (feminine plural); प्रजा (prajā) - offspring; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; धार्मिका (dhārmikā) - righteous; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - by us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard; स्वयम् (svayam) - themselves; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; देवत्वं (devatvaṃ) - divinity; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवानियात् (devāniyāt) - from the gods may arise; भयम् (bhayam) - fear;]
(These offspring, O mighty-armed, righteous, thus by us has been heard. Themselves go to divinity, then from the gods may arise fear. (13-40-5))
O mighty-armed one, we have heard that these offspring are righteous. They themselves attain divinity, and then fear may arise from the gods. (13-40-5)
अथाभ्यगच्छन्देवास्ते पितामहमरिंदम। निवेद्य मानसं चापि तूष्णीमासन्नवाङ्मुखाः ॥१३-४०-६॥
athābhyagacchandevāste pitāmaham ariṃdama। nivedya mānasaṃ cāpi tūṣṇīm āsannavāṅmukhāḥ ॥13-40-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अभ्यगच्छन् (abhyagacchan) - approached; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; ते (te) - they; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - destroyer of enemies; निवेद्य (nivedya) - having submitted; मानसं (mānasaṃ) - mind; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silently; आसन्न (āsanna) - having sat; वाङ्मुखाः (vāṅmukhāḥ) - with faces turned towards speech;]
(Then the gods, they approached the grandfather, destroyer of enemies; having submitted the mind and also silently having sat, with faces turned towards speech. (13-40-6))

तेषामन्तर्गतं ज्ञात्वा देवानां स पितामहः। मानवानां प्रमोहार्थं कृत्या नार्योऽसृजत्प्रभुः ॥१३-४०-७॥

(Of them entered within having known, of the gods, he, the grandsire, of men, for the purpose of delusion, by magical being, women, created, the lord.)
Having known what was within them, the grandsire of the gods, for the purpose of deluding men, the lord created women by magical being. (13-40-7)
पूर्वसर्गे तु कौन्तेय साध्व्यो नार्य इहाभवन्। असाध्व्यस्तु समुत्पन्ना कृत्या सर्गात्प्रजापतेः ॥१३-४०-८॥
pūrvasarge tu kaunteya sādhvyo nārya ihābhavan। asādhvyas tu samutpannā kṛtyā sargāt prajāpateḥ ॥13-40-8॥
[पूर्वसर्गे (pūrvasarge) - in the previous creation; तु (tu) - but; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; साध्व्यः (sādhvyaḥ) - virtuous women; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; इह (iha) - here; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; असाध्व्यः (asādhvyaḥ) - unvirtuous women; तु (tu) - but; समुत्पन्नाः (samutpannāḥ) - arisen; कृत्याः (kṛtyāḥ) - due to actions; सर्गात् (sargāt) - from the creation; प्रजापतेः (prajāpateḥ) - of Prajāpati;]
(In the previous creation but, O son of Kunti, virtuous women here became; unvirtuous women but arisen due to actions from the creation of Prajāpati.)
O son of Kunti, in the previous creation, virtuous women were born here; but unvirtuous women arose due to actions after the creation of Prajāpati. (13-40-8)
ताभ्यः कामान्यथाकामं प्रादाद्धि स पितामहः। ताः कामलुब्धाः प्रमदाः प्रामथ्नन्त नरांस्तदा ॥१३-४०-९॥
tābhyaḥ kāmānyathākāmaṃ prādāddhi sa pitāmahaḥ। tāḥ kāmalubdhāḥ pramadāḥ prāmathnanta narāṃstadā ॥13-40-9॥
[ताभ्यः (tābhyaḥ) - to those (women); कामान् (kāmān) - desires; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as desired; प्रादात् (prādāt) - he gave; हि (hi) - indeed; स (sa) - he; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; ताः (tāḥ) - those (women); कामलुब्धाः (kāmalubdhāḥ) - greedy for desires; प्रमदाः (pramadāḥ) - women; प्रामथ्नन्त (prāmathnanta) - tormented; नरान् (narān) - men; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(To those (women), desires as desired he gave indeed, he the grandsire. Those greedy for desires women tormented men then.)
The grandsire indeed gave those women whatever desires they wished for. Then, those women, greedy for desires, tormented the men. (13-40-9)
क्रोधं कामस्य देवेशः सहायं चासृजत्प्रभुः। असज्जन्त प्रजाः सर्वाः कामक्रोधवशं गताः ॥१३-४०-१०॥
krodhaṃ kāmasya deveśaḥ sahāyaṃ cāsṛjat prabhuḥ। asajjanta prajāḥ sarvāḥ kāmakrodhavaśaṃ gatāḥ ॥13-40-10॥
[क्रोधं (krodham) - anger; कामस्य (kāmasya) - of desire; देवेशः (deveśaḥ) - lord of the gods; सहायं (sahāyam) - assistant; च (ca) - and; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master; असज्जन्त (asajjanta) - became attached; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; कामक्रोधवशं (kāmakrodhavaśam) - under the control of desire and anger; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone;]
(The lord of the gods created anger as the assistant of desire, and the master created. All creatures became attached, gone under the control of desire and anger. (13-40-10))

(Not and of women ritual act any thus law established. Without senses, without mantras and women untruth thus scripture.)
It is established by law that women have no ritual act; the scripture says: women are without senses, without mantras, and untruthful. (13-40-11)
शय्यासनमलङ्कारमन्नपानमनार्यताम्। दुर्वाग्भावं रतिं चैव ददौ स्त्रीभ्यः प्रजापतिः ॥१३-४०-१२॥
śayyāsanamalaṅkāramannapānamanāryatām। durvāgbhāvaṃ ratiṃ caiva dadau strībhyaḥ prajāpatiḥ ॥13-40-12॥
[शय्या (śayyā) - bed; आसन (āsana) - seat; मलङ्कारम् (malaṅkāram) - adornment; अन्न (anna) - food; पानम् (pānam) - drink; अनार्यताम् (anāryatām) - un-nobility; दुर्वाग्भावम् (durvāgbhāvam) - evil-speech-nature; रतिम् (ratim) - pleasure; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ददौ (dadau) - gave; स्त्रीभ्यः (strībhyaḥ) - to women; प्रजापतिः (prajāpatiḥ) - Prajāpati;]
(Bed, seat, adornment, food, drink, un-nobility, evil-speech-nature, pleasure, and indeed, gave to women Prajāpati.)
Prajāpati gave to women bed, seat, adornment, food, drink, lack of nobility, harsh speech, and pleasure. (13-40-12)
न तासां रक्षणं कर्तुं शक्यं पुंसा कथञ्चन। अपि विश्वकृता तात कुतस्तु पुरुषैरिह ॥१३-४०-१३॥
na tāsāṃ rakṣaṇaṃ kartuṃ śakyaṃ puṃsā kathaṃcana। api viśvakṛtā tāta kutastu puruṣairiha ॥13-40-13॥
[न (na) - not; तासां (tāsāṃ) - of those (women); रक्षणं (rakṣaṇam) - protection; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; पुंसा (puṃsā) - by a man; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; अपि (api) - even; विश्वकृता (viśvakṛtā) - by the creator of the universe; तात (tāta) - O dear one; कुतस्तु (kutastu) - whence then; पुरुषैः (puruṣaiḥ) - by men; इह (iha) - here;]
(Not of those (women) protection to do possible by a man in any way. Even by the creator of the universe, O dear one, whence then by men here.)
O dear one, it is not possible for a man to protect those women in any way. Even the creator of the universe cannot do so, so how can ordinary men here? (13-40-13)
वाचा वा वधबन्धैर्वा क्लेशैर्वा विविधैस्तथा। न शक्या रक्षितुं नार्यस्ता हि नित्यमसंयताः ॥१३-४०-१४॥
vācā vā vadhabandhair vā kleśair vā vividhais tathā। na śakyā rakṣituṃ nāryas tā hi nityam asaṃyatāḥ ॥13-40-14॥
[वाचा (vācā) - by speech; वा (vā) - or; वधबन्धैः (vadhabandhaiḥ) - by killing and binding; वा (vā) - or; क्लेशैः (kleśaiḥ) - by afflictions; वा (vā) - or; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various (means); तथा (tathā) - thus; न (na) - not; शक्या (śakyā) - possible; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; ता (tā) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; असंयताः (asaṃyatāḥ) - unrestrained;]
(By speech or by killing and binding or by afflictions or by various (means) thus; not possible to protect women they indeed always unrestrained.)
Women, being always unrestrained, cannot be protected by speech, by killing and binding, by afflictions, or by various other means. (13-40-14)
इदं तु पुरुषव्याघ्र पुरस्ताच्छ्रुतवानहम्। यथा रक्षा कृता पूर्वं विपुलेन गुरुस्त्रियः ॥१३-४०-१५॥
idaṃ tu puruṣavyāghra purastāc chrutavān aham। yathā rakṣā kṛtā pūrvaṃ vipulena gurustriyaḥ ॥13-40-15॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; तु (tu) - but; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - formerly; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - I have heard; अहम् (aham) - I; यथा (yathā) - as; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; कृता (kṛtā) - was done; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - before; विपुलेन (vipulena) - by Vipula; गुरुस्त्रियः (gurustriyaḥ) - the preceptor's wife;]
(This but, tiger among men, formerly I have heard, I, as protection was done before by Vipula, the preceptor's wife.)
But, O tiger among men, I have heard this before: how protection was formerly done for the preceptor's wife by Vipula. (13-40-15)
ऋषिरासीन्महाभागो देवशर्मेति विश्रुतः। तस्य भार्या रुचिर्नाम रूपेणासदृशी भुवि ॥१३-४०-१६॥
ṛṣir āsīn mahābhāgo devaśarmeti viśrutaḥ। tasya bhāryā rucir nāma rūpeṇāsadṛśī bhuvi ॥13-40-16॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - most fortunate; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarman; इति (iti) - thus; विश्रुतः (viśrutaḥ) - well-known; तस्य (tasya) - his; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; रुचिः (ruciḥ) - Ruci; नाम (nāma) - by name; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in beauty; असदृशी (asadṛśī) - unmatched; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(The sage was most fortunate, well-known as Devaśarman. His wife, named Ruci, was unmatched in beauty on earth. (13-40-16))

तस्य रूपेण संमत्ता देवगन्धर्वदानवाः। विशेषतस्तु राजेन्द्र वृत्रहा पाकशासनः ॥१३-४०-१७॥
tasya rūpeṇa saṁmattā devagandharvadānavāḥ। viśeṣatastu rājendra vṛtrahā pākaśāsanaḥ ॥13-40-17॥

By his form, the gods, gandharvas, and dānavas were deluded; but especially, O king, Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, was affected. (13-40-17)
नारीणां चरितज्ञश्च देवशर्मा महामुनिः। यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं भार्यां तामभ्यरक्षत ॥१३-४०-१८॥
nārīṇāṃ caritajñaś ca devaśarmā mahāmuniḥ। yathāśakti yathotsāhaṃ bhāryāṃ tām abhyarakṣata ॥13-40-18॥
[नारीणां (nārīṇām) - of women; चरितज्ञः (caritajñaḥ) - knower of conduct; च (ca) - and; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; यथा (yathā) - according to; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; यथा (yathā) - according to; उत्साहम् (utsāham) - enthusiasm; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; ताम् (tām) - her; अभ्यरक्षत् (abhyarakṣat) - protected;]
(Of women knower of conduct and Devaśarmā great sage according to ability according to enthusiasm wife her protected.)
Devaśarmā, the great sage and knower of women's conduct, protected his wife as much as he was able and enthusiastic. (13-40-18)
पुरंदरं च जानीते परस्त्रीकामचारिणम्। तस्माद्यत्नेन भार्याया रक्षणं स चकार ह ॥१३-४०-१९॥
puraṃdaraṃ ca jānīte parastrīkāmacāriṇam। tasmādyatnena bhāryāyā rakṣaṇaṃ sa cakāra ha ॥13-40-19॥
[पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Indra; (lit. destroyer of cities; name of Indra); च (ca) - and; जानीते (jānīte) - knows; परस्त्री (parastrī) - another's wife; काम (kāma) - desire; चारिणम् (cāriṇam) - one who moves; (here: one who goes after, pursuer); तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; भार्यायाः (bhāryāyāḥ) - of (his) wife; रक्षणम् (rakṣaṇam) - protection; स (sa) - he; चकार (cakāra) - did; (made, performed); ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Indra and knows the pursuer of another's wife; therefore, with effort, the protection of (his) wife he indeed did;)
Indra, knowing the one who pursues another's wife, therefore made every effort to protect his own wife. (13-40-19)
स कदाचिदृषिस्तात यज्ञं कर्तुमनास्तदा। भार्यासंरक्षणं कार्यं कथं स्यादित्यचिन्तयत् ॥१३-४०-२०॥
sa kadācid ṛṣis tāta yajñaṃ kartum anās tadā। bhāryā-saṃrakṣaṇaṃ kāryaṃ kathaṃ syād ity acintayat ॥13-40-20॥
[स (sa) - he; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; तात (tāta) - O dear (addressing); यज्ञम् (yajñam) - sacrifice; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to perform; अनास् (anās) - not able; तदा (tadā) - then; भार्या-संरक्षणम् (bhāryā-saṃrakṣaṇam) - wife-protection; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; कथम् (katham) - how; स्यात् (syāt) - might be; इति (iti) - thus; अचिन्तयत् (acintayat) - he thought;]
(He at some time, the sage, O dear, sacrifice to perform not able then, wife-protection to be done how might be, thus he thought.)
Once, O dear, the sage, being unable to perform the sacrifice at that time, thought thus: "How might the protection of my wife be accomplished?" (13-40-20)
रक्षाविधानं मनसा स विचिन्त्य महातपाः। आहूय दयितं शिष्यं विपुलं प्राह भार्गवम् ॥१३-४०-२१॥
rakṣāvidhānaṃ manasā sa vicintya mahātapāḥ। āhūya dayitaṃ śiṣyaṃ vipulaṃ prāha bhārgavam ॥13-40-21॥

यज्ञकारो गमिष्यामि रुचिं चेमां सुरेश्वरः। पुत्र प्रार्थयते नित्यं तां रक्षस्व यथाबलम् ॥१३-४०-२२॥
yajñakāro gamiṣyāmi ruciṃ cemāṃ sureśvaraḥ। putra prārthayate nityaṃ tāṃ rakṣasva yathābalam ॥13-40-22॥

(The sacrifice-maker, I shall go, desire and this, O lord of the gods; the son always requests her, protect (her) according to (your) strength.)

अप्रमत्तेन ते भाव्यं सदा प्रति पुरंदरम्। स हि रूपाणि कुरुते विविधानि भृगूद्वह ॥१३-४०-२३॥
apramattena te bhāvyam sadā prati puraṃdaram। sa hi rūpāṇi kurute vividhāni bhṛgūdvaha ॥13-40-23॥
[अप्रमत्तेन (apramattena) - by the one who is not negligent; ते (te) - by you; भाव्यं (bhāvyam) - to be done; सदा (sadā) - always; प्रति (prati) - towards; पुरंदरम् (puraṃdaram) - Indra; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; कुरुते (kurute) - creates; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; भृगूद्वह (bhṛgūdvaha) - O best of Bhṛgus;]
(By the one who is not negligent, by you, it is to be done always towards Indra. He indeed creates various forms, O best of Bhṛgus.)
You must always act without negligence towards Indra, for he indeed creates various forms, O best of Bhṛgus. (13-40-23)
इत्युक्तो विपुलस्तेन तपस्वी नियतेन्द्रियः। सदैवोग्रतपा राजन्नग्न्यर्कसदृशद्युतिः ॥१३-४०-२४॥
ityukto vipulastena tapasvī niyatendriyaḥ। sadaivogratapā rājannagnyarkasadṛśadyutiḥ ॥13-40-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - great; तेन (tena) - by him; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; नियतेन्द्रियः (niyatendriyaḥ) - one whose senses are controlled; सदा (sadā) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; उग्रतपा (ugratapā) - of severe austerity; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अग्नि-अर्क-सदृश-द्युतिः (agni-arka-sadṛśa-dyutiḥ) - having a radiance like fire and the sun;]
(Thus addressed, the great ascetic whose senses are controlled, always indeed of severe austerity, O king, having a radiance like fire and the sun.)
O king, thus addressed by him, the great ascetic with controlled senses, always engaged in severe austerity, shone with a radiance like fire and the sun. (13-40-24)
धर्मज्ञः सत्यवादी च तथेति प्रत्यभाषत। पुनश्चेदं महाराज पप्रच्छ प्रथितं गुरुम् ॥१३-४०-२५॥
dharmajñaḥ satyavādī ca tatheti pratyabhāṣata। punaś cedaṃ mahārāja papraccha prathitaṃ gurum ॥13-40-25॥
[धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; च (ca) - and; तथेति (tatheti) - so be it thus; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - replied; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; पप्रच्छ (papraccha) - asked; प्रथितं (prathitaṃ) - renowned; गुरुम् (gurum) - teacher;]

कानि रूपाणि शक्रस्य भवन्त्यागच्छतो मुने। वपुस्तेजश्च कीदृग्वै तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१३-४०-२६॥
kāni rūpāṇi śakrasya bhavantyāgacchato mune। vapustejaśca kīdṛgvai tanme vyākhyātumarhasi ॥13-40-26॥

ततः स भगवांस्तस्मै विपुलाय महात्मने। आचचक्षे यथातत्त्वं मायां शक्रस्य भारत ॥१३-४०-२७॥
tataḥ sa bhagavāṃs tasmai vipulāya mahātmane। ācacakṣe yathātattvaṃ māyāṃ śakrasya bhārata ॥13-40-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; the blessed one; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; विपुलाय (vipulāya) - to the great; to the vast; महात्मने (mahātmane) - to the great-souled one; आचचक्षे (ācacakṣe) - he explained; he declared; यथातत्त्वम् (yathātattvam) - as it truly is; according to reality; मायाम् (māyām) - illusion; magic; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; of Indra; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; O descendant of Bharata;]
(Then he, the revered one, to him, to the great, to the great-souled one, explained as it truly is the illusion of Śakra, O Bhārata.)
Then the blessed one explained to that great and noble soul the true nature of Śakra's illusion, O Bhārata. (13-40-27)
बहुमायः स विप्रर्षे बलहा पाकशासनः। तांस्तान्विकुरुते भावान्बहूनथ मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१३-४०-२८॥
bahumāyaḥ sa viprarṣe balahā pākaśāsanaḥ। tāṃstānvikurute bhāvānbahūnatha muhurmuhuḥ ॥13-40-28॥
[बहुमायः (bahumāyaḥ) - possessing much illusion; स (sa) - he; विप्रर्षे (viprarṣe) - O sage among Brāhmaṇas; बलहा (balahā) - destroyer of strength; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra (slayer of Pāka); तांस्तान् (tāṃstān) - those (various); विकुरुते (vikurute) - manifests; भावान् (bhāvān) - forms; बहून् (bahūn) - many; अथ (atha) - then; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhurmuḥ) - again and again;]
(Possessing much illusion, he, O sage among Brāhmaṇas, the destroyer of strength, Indra, those various forms manifests, many, then, again and again.)
O sage among Brāhmaṇas, Indra, the destroyer of strength and master of many illusions, repeatedly manifests many different forms. (13-40-28)
किरीटी वज्रभृद्धन्वी मुकुटी बद्धकुण्डलः। भवत्यथ मुहूर्तेन चण्डालसमदर्शनः ॥१३-४०-२९॥
kirīṭī vajrabhṛddhanvī mukuṭī baddhakuṇḍalaḥ। bhavatyatha muhūrtena caṇḍālasamadarśanaḥ ॥13-40-29॥
[किरीटी (kirīṭī) - one who has a crown; वज्रभृत् (vajrabhṛt) - holder of the thunderbolt; धन्वी (dhanvī) - one who has a bow; मुकुटी (mukuṭī) - one who has a crest-jewel; बद्धकुण्डलः (baddhakuṇḍalaḥ) - one with fastened earrings; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अथ (atha) - then; मुहूर्तेन (muhūrtena) - in a moment; चण्डाल (caṇḍāla) - outcaste; समदर्शनः (samadarśanaḥ) - having the appearance of;]
(The one with a crown, holder of the thunderbolt, bowman, with a crest-jewel, with fastened earrings, then becomes, in a moment, having the appearance of an outcaste.)
He who was crowned, holding the thunderbolt and bow, adorned with a crest-jewel and earrings, suddenly, in a moment, appears just like an outcaste. (13-40-29)
शिखी जटी चीरवासाः पुनर्भवति पुत्रक। बृहच्छरीरश्च पुनः पीवरोऽथ पुनः कृशः ॥१३-४०-३०॥
śikhī jaṭī cīravāsāḥ punarbhavati putraka। bṛhaccharīraś ca punaḥ pīvaro 'tha punaḥ kṛśaḥ ॥13-40-30॥
[शिखी (śikhī) - having a crest of hair; जटी (jaṭī) - having matted locks; चीरवासाः (cīravāsāḥ) - wearing bark garments; पुनः (punar) - again; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; बृहच्छरीरः (bṛhaccharīraḥ) - having a large body; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पीवरः (pīvaraḥ) - fat; अथ (atha) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - thin;]
(Having a crest of hair, having matted locks, wearing bark garments, again becomes, O son; having a large body and again fat, then again thin.)
O son, one who has a crest of hair, matted locks, and wears bark garments, again becomes (in another birth) large-bodied, then fat, and then again thin. (13-40-30)
गौरं श्यामं च कृष्णं च वर्णं विकुरुते पुनः। विरूपो रूपवांश्चैव युवा वृद्धस्तथैव च ॥१३-४०-३१॥
gauraṃ śyāmaṃ ca kṛṣṇaṃ ca varṇaṃ vikurute punaḥ। virūpo rūpavāṃścaiva yuvā vṛddhastathaiva ca ॥13-40-31॥
[गौरं (gauraṃ) - white; (colour); श्यामं (śyāmaṃ) - dark; (colour); च (ca) - and; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇaṃ) - black; (colour); च (ca) - and; वर्णं (varṇaṃ) - colour; विकुरुते (vikurute) - changes; transforms; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; विरूपः (virūpaḥ) - deformed; misshapen; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - possessing beauty; handsome; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; युवा (yuvā) - young; youth; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - old; aged; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; likewise; च (ca) - and;]
(White, dark and black colour he transforms again; deformed, possessing beauty indeed, young, old likewise and;)
He changes his colour to white, dark and black again; he becomes deformed, handsome, young, old, and likewise. (13-40-31)
प्राज्ञो जडश्च मूकश्च ह्रस्वो दीर्घस्तथैव च। ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियश्चैव वैश्यः शूद्रस्तथैव च ॥ प्रतिलोमानुलोमश्च भवत्यथ शतक्रतुः ॥१३-४०-३२॥
prājño jaḍaś ca mūkaś ca hrasvo dīrghas tathaiva ca। brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyaś caiva vaiśyaḥ śūdras tathaiva ca॥ pratilomanulomaś ca bhavaty atha śatakratuḥ॥13-40-32॥
[प्राज्ञः (prājñaḥ) - wise one; जडः (jaḍaḥ) - dull one; च (ca) - and; मूकः (mūkaḥ) - mute one; च (ca) - and; ह्रस्वः (hrasvaḥ) - short one; दीर्घः (dīrghaḥ) - tall one; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - Brahmin; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - Kshatriya; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; वैश्यः (vaiśyaḥ) - Vaishya; शूद्रः (śūdraḥ) - Shudra; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; प्रतिलोम (pratiloma) - reverse order; अनुलोम (anuloma) - natural order; च (ca) - and; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; अथ (atha) - then; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra;]
(wise one, dull one and mute one and short one, tall one in the same way and Brahmin, Kshatriya and indeed Vaishya, Shudra in the same way and reverse order, natural order and becomes then Indra.)
The wise, the dull, the mute, the short, and the tall, as well as the Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra, all in the same way, and both in reverse and natural order, thus becomes Indra. (13-40-32)
शुकवायसरूपी च हंसकोकिलरूपवान्। सिंहव्याघ्रगजानां च रूपं धारयते पुनः ॥१३-४०-३३॥
śukavāyasarūpī ca haṃsakokilarūpavān। siṃhavyāghragajānāṃ ca rūpaṃ dhārayate punaḥ ॥13-40-33॥
[शुक (śuka) - parrot; वायस (vāyasa) - crow; रूपी (rūpī) - having the form; च (ca) - and; हंस (haṃsa) - swan; कोकिल (kokila) - cuckoo; रूपवान् (rūpavān) - possessing the form; सिंह (siṃha) - lion; व्याघ्र (vyāghra) - tiger; गजानां (gajānāṃ) - of elephants; च (ca) - and; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; धारयते (dhārayate) - assumes; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(He who has the form of a parrot and a crow, and who possesses the form of a swan and a cuckoo, again assumes the form of lions, tigers, and elephants.)

दैवं दैत्यमथो राज्ञां वपुर्धारयतेऽपि च। सुकृशो वायुभग्नाङ्गः शकुनिर्विकृतस्तथा ॥१३-४०-३४॥
daivaṃ daityam atho rājñāṃ vapur dhārayate'pi ca। sukṛśo vāyu-bhagna-aṅgaḥ śakuniḥ vikṛtas tathā ॥13-40-34॥
[दैवं (daivam) - divine; दैत्यम् (daityam) - demonic; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; राज्ञाम् (rājñām) - of kings; वपुः (vapuḥ) - form; धारयते (dhārayate) - bears; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; सुकृशः (sukṛśaḥ) - very thin; वायुभग्नाङ्गः (vāyu-bhagna-aṅgaḥ) - with limbs broken by wind; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - bird; विकृतः (vikṛtaḥ) - deformed; तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Divine, demonic, then indeed, of kings, form, bears, also, and; very thin, with limbs broken by wind, bird, deformed, thus.)
A bird, very thin and deformed, with limbs broken by the wind, also bears the form of the divine, the demonic, and even of kings, thus. (13-40-34)
चतुष्पाद्बहुरूपश्च पुनर्भवति बालिशः। मक्षिकामशकादीनां वपुर्धारयतेऽपि च ॥१३-४०-३५॥
catuṣpādbahurūpaś ca punar bhavati bāliśaḥ। makṣikāmaśakādīnāṃ vapur dhārayate'pi ca ॥13-40-35॥
[चतुष्पात् (catuṣpāt) - four-footed; बहु (bahu) - many; रूपः (rūpaḥ) - forms; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punar) - again; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; बालिशः (bāliśaḥ) - foolish; मक्षिका (makṣikā) - fly; मशक (maśaka) - mosquito; आदीनां (ādīnām) - and others; वपुः (vapuḥ) - body; धारयते (dhārayate) - assumes; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and;]
(The foolish one again becomes four-footed, of many forms, and also assumes the body of flies, mosquitoes, and others.)
The foolish person is reborn as a four-footed creature of many forms, and also takes on the bodies of flies, mosquitoes, and similar beings. (13-40-35)
न शक्यमस्य ग्रहणं कर्तुं विपुल केनचित्। अपि विश्वकृता तात येन सृष्टमिदं जगत् ॥१३-४०-३६॥
na śakyamasya grahaṇaṃ kartuṃ vipula kenacit। api viśvakṛtā tāta yena sṛṣṭamidaṃ jagat ॥13-40-36॥
[न (na) - not; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अस्य (asya) - of this; ग्रहणम् (grahaṇam) - grasping; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; विपुल (vipula) - vast; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone; अपि (api) - even; विश्वकृता (viśvakṛtā) - by the creator of the universe; तात (tāta) - O dear; येन (yena) - by whom; सृष्टम् (sṛṣṭam) - created; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जगत् (jagat) - world;]
(Not possible of this grasping to do vast by anyone. Even by the creator of the universe, O dear, by whom created this world.)
O dear, it is not possible for anyone, even for the creator of the universe by whom this world was created, to grasp this vastness. (13-40-36)
पुनरन्तर्हितः शक्रो दृश्यते ज्ञानचक्षुषा। वायुभूतश्च स पुनर्देवराजो भवत्युत ॥१३-४०-३७॥
punarantarhitaḥ śakro dṛśyate jñānacakṣuṣā। vāyubhūtaś ca sa punar devarājo bhavaty uta ॥13-40-37॥
[पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्तर्हितः (antarhitaḥ) - disappeared; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; ज्ञानचक्षुषा (jñānacakṣuṣā) - by the eye of knowledge; वायुभूतः (vāyubhūtaḥ) - having become air; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king of the gods; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Again disappeared Śakra is seen by the eye of knowledge. Having become air and he again king of the gods becomes indeed. (13-40-37))

[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; रूपाणि (rūpāṇi) - forms; appearances; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; always; कुरुते (kurute) - does; makes; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra; lord of the Maruts; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; विपुल (vipula) - great; extensive; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; by exertion; रक्षेम (rakṣema) - we should protect; let us guard; इमां (imāṃ) - this; (feminine accusative); तनुमध्यमाम् (tanumadhyamām) - slender-waisted; having a thin middle;]
(Thus forms constantly does Indra; therefore with great effort we should protect this slender-waisted (one).)

यथा रुचिं नावलिहेद्देवेन्द्रो भृगुसत्तम। क्रतावुपहितं न्यस्तं हविः श्वेव दुरात्मवान् ॥१३-४०-३९॥
yathā ruciṁ nāvaliheddeveṁdro bhṛgusattama। kratāvupahitaṁ nyastaṁ haviḥ śveva durātmavān ॥13-40-39॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; according to; like; रुचिं (ruciṁ) - desire; liking; taste; न (na) - not; अवलिहेत् (avalihēt) - should lick; would lick; देवेन्द्रः (deveṁdraḥ) - Indra; lord of the gods; भृगुसत्तम (bhṛgusattama) - O best of Bhṛgus; best among the Bhṛgus; क्रतौ (kratau) - in the sacrifice; in the ritual; उपहितं (upahitaṁ) - offered; placed near; presented; न्यस्तं (nyastaṁ) - deposited; placed; set down; हविः (haviḥ) - oblation; sacrificial offering; श्वा (śvā) - dog; इव (iva) - like; as; दुरात्मवान् (durātmavān) - wicked-souled; evil-minded;]
(As according to desire, not should lick Indra, O best of Bhṛgus, in the sacrifice the offered, deposited oblation, like a dog, the wicked-souled.)
O best of Bhṛgus, just as Indra would not lick the offered and deposited oblation in the sacrifice according to his desire, like a dog would, so does the wicked-souled. (13-40-39)
एवमाख्याय स मुनिर्यज्ञकारोऽगमत्तदा। देवशर्मा महाभागस्ततो भरतसत्तम ॥१३-४०-४०॥
evam ākhyāya sa munir yajñakāro'gamattadā। devaśarmā mahābhāgas tato bharatasattama ॥13-40-40॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आख्याय (ākhyāya) - having told; स (sa) - he; मुनि (muni) - sage; यज्ञकारः (yajñakāraḥ) - performer of sacrifice; अगमत् (agamat) - went; तदा (tadā) - then; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; महाभागः (mahābhāgaḥ) - most fortunate; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - best of the Bharatas;]
(Thus having told, he, the sage, performer of sacrifice, went then. Devaśarmā, most fortunate, then, best of the Bharatas. (13-40-40))
Thus, having spoken, the sage who performed the sacrifice departed at that time. Devaśarmā, the most fortunate, O best of the Bharatas. (13-40-40)
विपुलस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा गुरोश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत्। रक्षां च परमां चक्रे देवराजान्महाबलात् ॥१३-४०-४१॥
vipulas tu vacaḥ śrutvā guroś cintāparo 'bhavat। rakṣāṃ ca paramāṃ cakre devarājān mahābalāt ॥13-40-41॥
[विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - the great one; तु (tu) - but; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; चिन्तापरः (cintāparaḥ) - absorbed in thought; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; रक्षाम् (rakṣām) - protection; च (ca) - and; परमाम् (paramām) - supreme; चक्रे (cakre) - made; देवराजात् (devarājāt) - from the king of the gods; महाबलात् (mahābalāt) - from the great strength;]
(But the great one, having heard the speech of the teacher, became absorbed in thought; and he made supreme protection from the king of the gods of great strength.)
But Vipula, having heard the words of his teacher, became deeply thoughtful; and he arranged for supreme protection from the mighty king of the gods. (13-40-41)
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं गुरुदाराभिरक्षणे। मायावी हि सुरेन्द्रोऽसौ दुर्धर्षश्चापि वीर्यवान् ॥१३-४०-४२॥
kiṁ nu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ gurudārābhirakṣaṇe। māyāvī hi surendro'sau durdharṣaścāpi vīryavān ॥13-40-42॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; गुरुदाराभिरक्षणे (gurudārābhirakṣaṇe) - in the protection of the guru's wife; मायावी (māyāvī) - deceitful; हि (hi) - indeed; सुरेन्द्रः (surendraḥ) - the lord of the gods; असौ (asau) - he; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - unassailable; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(What indeed is possible by me to do in the protection of the guru's wife? Deceitful indeed is the lord of the gods, he is unassailable and also powerful.)
What can I possibly do to protect the guru's wife? The lord of the gods is truly deceitful, unassailable, and powerful. (13-40-42)
नापिधायाश्रमं शक्यो रक्षितुं पाकशासनः। उटजं वा तथा ह्यस्य नानाविधसरूपता ॥१३-४०-४३॥
nā’pidhāyāśramaṃ śakyo rakṣituṃ pākaśāsanaḥ। uṭajaṃ vā tathā hy asya nānāvidhasarūpatā ॥13-40-43॥
[न (na) - not; अपिधाय (apidhāya) - having covered; आश्रमं (āśramam) - hermitage; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - able; रक्षितुं (rakṣitum) - to protect; पाकशासनः (pākaśāsanaḥ) - Indra; उटजं (uṭajam) - hut; वा (vā) - or; तथा (tathā) - likewise; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of this; नानाविधसरूपता (nānāvidhasarūpatā) - variety of forms;]
(Not having covered the hermitage, Indra is not able to protect (it), or the hut likewise indeed, of this (there is) variety of forms.)
Unless the hermitage is covered, even Indra cannot protect it, nor the hut; for indeed, there is a variety of forms in this. (13-40-43)
वायुरूपेण वा शक्रो गुरुपत्नीं प्रधर्षयेत्। तस्मादिमां सम्प्रविश्य रुचिं स्थास्येऽहमद्य वै ॥१३-४०-४४॥
vāyurūpeṇa vā śakro gurupatnīṃ pradharṣayet। tasmādimāṃ sampraviśya ruciṃ sthāsye'hamadya vai ॥13-40-44॥
[वायुरूपेण (vāyurūpeṇa) - by the form of wind; वा (vā) - or; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; गुरुपत्नीम् (gurupatnīm) - the teacher's wife; प्रधर्षयेत् (pradharṣayet) - might violate; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; इमाम् (imām) - this (woman); सम्प्रविश्य (sampraviśya) - having entered; रुचिम् (rucim) - Ruci (her name); स्थास्ये (sthāsye) - I shall remain; अहम् (aham) - I; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(By the form of wind or Indra might violate the teacher's wife; therefore, having entered this (woman) Ruci, I shall remain today indeed.)
Indra might violate the teacher's wife by taking the form of wind; therefore, today I shall indeed enter this woman Ruci and remain (there). (13-40-44)
अथ वा पौरुषेणेयमशक्या रक्षितुं मया। बहुरूपो हि भगवाञ्छ्रूयते हरिवाहनः ॥१३-४०-४५॥
atha vā pauruṣeṇeyamaśakyā rakṣituṃ mayā। bahurūpo hi bhagavāñśrūyate harivāhanaḥ ॥13-40-45॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वा (vā) - or; पौरुषेण (pauruṣeṇa) - by manliness; by human effort; इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); अशक्या (aśakyā) - not possible; impossible; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; मया (mayā) - by me; बहुरूपः (bahurūpaḥ) - of many forms; हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; is said; हरिवाहनः (harivāhanaḥ) - he whose vehicle is Hari (Vishnu);]
(Now or by manliness this (feminine) not possible to protect by me. Of many forms indeed the Lord is heard he whose vehicle is Hari (Vishnu).)
Or else, by human effort, this cannot be protected by me. It is said that the Lord, whose vehicle is Hari, is of many forms. (13-40-45)
सोऽहं योगबलादेनां रक्षिष्ये पाकशासनात्। गात्राणि गात्रैरस्याहं सम्प्रवेक्ष्येऽभिरक्षितुम् ॥१३-४०-४६॥
so'ham yogabalādenāṃ rakṣiṣye pākaśāsanāt। gātrāṇi gātrairasyāhaṃ sampravekṣye'bhirakṣitum ॥13-40-46॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; योगबलात् (yogabalāt) - from the power of yoga; एनाम् (enām) - this (feminine); रक्षिष्ये (rakṣiṣye) - I shall protect; पाकशासनात् (pākaśāsanāt) - from Indra (the lord of the gods); गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - with limbs; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; अहम् (aham) - I; सम्प्रवेक्ष्ये (sampravekṣye) - I shall enter; अभिरक्षितुम् (abhirakṣitum) - to protect;]
(He I from the power of yoga this (feminine) I shall protect from Indra; limbs with limbs of her I shall enter to protect;)
He, by the power of yoga, I shall protect this one from Indra; I shall enter her limbs with my limbs to protect her. (13-40-46)
यद्युच्छिष्टामिमां पत्नीं रुचिं पश्येत मे गुरुः। शप्स्यत्यसंशयं कोपाद्दिव्यज्ञानो महातपाः ॥१३-४०-४७॥
yady ucchiṣṭām imāṃ patnīṃ ruciṃ paśyet me guruḥ। śapsyaty asaṃśayaṃ kopād divyajñāno mahātapāḥ ॥13-40-47॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; उच्छिष्टाम् (ucchiṣṭām) - defiled by remnants; इमाम् (imām) - this (feminine); पत्नीम् (patnīm) - wife; रुचिम् (rucim) - interest; desire; पश्येत् (paśyet) - should see; perceives; मे (me) - my; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; preceptor; शप्स्यति (śapsyati) - will curse; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; दिव्यज्ञानः (divyajñānaḥ) - possessing divine knowledge; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]
(If my teacher, possessing divine knowledge and great asceticism, should see desire for this wife defiled by remnants, he will curse without doubt out of anger.)
If my teacher, who is endowed with divine knowledge and great austerity, sees any desire for this wife of mine who is defiled by remnants, he will undoubtedly curse me out of anger. (13-40-47)
न चेयं रक्षितुं शक्या यथान्या प्रमदा नृभिः। मायावी हि सुरेन्द्रोऽसावहो प्राप्तोऽस्मि संशयम् ॥१३-४०-४८॥
na ceyaṃ rakṣituṃ śakyā yathānyā pramadā nṛbhiḥ। māyāvī hi surendro'sāvaho prāpto'smi saṃśayam ॥13-40-48॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; इयम् (iyam) - this (woman); रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; शक्या (śakyā) - able; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्या (anyā) - other; प्रमदा (pramadā) - woman; नृभिः (nṛbhiḥ) - by men; मायावी (māyāvī) - deceitful; हि (hi) - indeed; सुरेन्द्रः (surendraḥ) - lord of gods; असौ (asau) - he; अहः (ahaḥ) - today; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has come; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - in doubt;]
(Not and this (woman) to protect able as other woman by men. Deceitful indeed lord of gods he today has come I am in doubt.)
And this woman cannot be protected by men as other women can. For the deceitful lord of the gods himself has come today; I am in doubt. (13-40-48)
अवश्यकरणीयं हि गुरोरिह हि शासनम्। यदि त्वेतदहं कुर्यामाश्चर्यं स्यात्कृतं मया ॥१३-४०-४९॥
avaśyakaraṇīyaṃ hi guroriha hi śāsanam। yadi tvetadahaṃ kuryāmāścaryaṃ syātkṛtaṃ mayā ॥13-40-49॥
[अवश्यकरणीयं (avaśyakaraṇīyaṃ) - certainly-to-be-done; हि (hi) - indeed; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; इह (iha) - here; हि (hi) - indeed; शासनम् (śāsanam) - command; यदि (yadi) - if; त्वेतत् (tvetat) - by you this; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; कुर्याम् (kuryām) - should do; आश्चर्यम् (āścaryam) - wonder; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Certainly-to-be-done indeed of the teacher here indeed command. If by you this I should do, wonder would be done by me. (13-40-49))
The command of the teacher here is indeed to be certainly carried out. If I were to do this at your behest, it would be a wonder accomplished by me. (13-40-49)
योगेनानुप्रविश्येह गुरुपत्न्याः कलेवरम्। निर्मुक्तस्य रजोरूपान्नापराधो भवेन्मम ॥१३-४०-५०॥
yogenānupraviśyeha gurupatnyāḥ kalevaram। nirmuktasya rajorūpānnāparādho bhavenmama ॥13-40-50॥
[योगेन (yogena) - by union; by yoga; अनुप्रविश्य (anupraviśya) - having entered into; having penetrated; इह (iha) - here; in this (world); गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the guru's wife; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; निर्मुक्तस्य (nirmuktasya) - of one who is freed; of the liberated; रजोरूपात् (rajorūpāt) - from the form of rajas; from the nature of passion; न (na) - not; अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - offense; fault; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; would occur; मम (mama) - my;]
(By yoga having entered here into the body of the guru's wife, of one who is freed from the form of rajas, no offense would occur to me.)
By entering here, through yoga, into the body of the guru's wife, since I am freed from the nature of passion, no offense would arise for me. (13-40-50)
यथा हि शून्यां पथिकः सभामध्यावसेत्पथि। तथाद्यावासयिष्यामि गुरुपत्न्याः कलेवरम् ॥१३-४०-५१॥
yathā hi śūnyāṃ pathikaḥ sabhāmadhyāvasetpathi। tathādyāvāsayiṣyāmi gurupatnyāḥ kalevaram ॥13-40-51॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; शून्यां (śūnyām) - empty; पथिकः (pathikaḥ) - traveler; सभाम् (sabhām) - assembly; अध्य् (adhy) - in the midst; आवसेत् (āvaset) - would stay; पथि (pathi) - on the road; तथा (tathā) - so; अद्य (adya) - today; आवासयिष्यामि (āvāsayiṣyāmi) - I will cause to dwell; गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the guru's wife; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body;]
(Just as indeed an empty assembly a traveler in the midst would stay on the road, so today I will cause to dwell the body of the guru's wife.)
Just as a traveler would stay in the midst of an empty assembly on the road, so today I will lay to rest the body of the guru's wife. (13-40-51)
असक्तः पद्मपत्रस्थो जलबिन्दुर्यथा चलः। एवमेव शरीरेऽस्या निवत्स्यामि समाहितः ॥१३-४०-५२॥
asaktaḥ padmapatrastho jalabinduryathā calaḥ। evameva śarīre'syā nivatsyāmi samāhitaḥ ॥13-40-52॥
[असक्तः (asaktaḥ) - unattached; पद्मपत्रस्थः (padmapatrasthaḥ) - situated on a lotus leaf; जलबिन्दुः (jalabinduḥ) - water drop; यथा (yathā) - just as; चलः (calaḥ) - moving; एवम् (evam) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; अस्या (asyā) - of this (woman); निवत्स्यामि (nivatsyāmi) - I shall dwell; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - collected;]
(Unattached, situated on a lotus leaf, a water drop, just as, moving; so indeed, in the body, of this, I shall dwell, collected.)
Just as a water drop, unattached, rests on a lotus leaf and moves, so indeed, I shall dwell collected in this body. (13-40-52)
इत्येवं धर्ममालोक्य वेदवेदांश्च सर्वशः। तपश्च विपुलं दृष्ट्वा गुरोरात्मन एव च ॥१३-४०-५३॥
ityevaṃ dharmam ālokya vedavedāṃś ca sarvaśaḥ। tapaś ca vipulaṃ dṛṣṭvā guror ātmana eva ca ॥13-40-53॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; धर्मम् (dharmam) - duty; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having observed; वेदवेदान् (vedavedān) - the Vedas and Vedāṅgas; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; च (ca) - and; विपुलम् (vipulam) - great; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Thus, in this manner, having observed duty, and the Vedas and Vedāṅgas entirely, and having seen great austerity of the teacher and of oneself indeed and.)
Thus, having observed duty and all the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, and having seen the great austerity of both the teacher and oneself, (13-40-53)
इति निश्चित्य मनसा रक्षां प्रति स भार्गवः। आतिष्ठत्परमं यत्नं यथा तच्छृणु पार्थिव ॥१३-४०-५४॥
iti niścitya manasā rakṣāṃ prati sa bhārgavaḥ। ātiṣṭhat paramaṃ yatnaṃ yathā tac chṛṇu pārthiva ॥13-40-54॥
[इति (iti) - thus; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having decided; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; रक्षाम् (rakṣām) - protection; प्रति (prati) - towards; सः (saḥ) - he; भार्गवः (bhārgavaḥ) - the descendant of Bhṛgu; आतिष्ठत् (ātiṣṭhat) - undertook; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; यत्नम् (yatnam) - effort; यथा (yathā) - as; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Thus, having decided with the mind towards protection, he, the descendant of Bhṛgu, undertook supreme effort; as that, hear, O king.)
Thus, having resolved in his mind to protect, the descendant of Bhṛgu made the utmost effort; hear how that happened, O king. (13-40-54)
गुरुपत्नीमुपासीनो विपुलः स महातपाः। उपासीनामनिन्द्याङ्गीं कथाभिः समलोभयत् ॥१३-४०-५५॥
gurupatnīm upāsīno vipulaḥ sa mahātapāḥ। upāsīnāṃ anindyāṅgīṃ kathābhiḥ samalobhayat ॥13-40-55॥
[गुरुपत्नीम् (gurupatnīm) - teacher's wife; उपासीनः (upāsīnaḥ) - having approached; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula (name); सः (saḥ) - he; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; उपासीनाम् (upāsīnām) - seated; अनिन्द्याङ्गीम् (anindyāṅgīm) - faultless-limbed (woman); कथाभिः (kathābhiḥ) - with stories; समलोभयत् (samalobhayat) - enticed;]
(Having approached the teacher's wife, Vipula, the great ascetic, seated (with) the faultless-limbed (woman), enticed (her) with stories.)
Vipula, the great ascetic, approached and sat near the teacher's wife, who was flawless in form, and tried to entice her with stories. (13-40-55)
नेत्राभ्यां नेत्रयोरस्या रश्मीन्संयोज्य रश्मिभिः। विवेश विपुलः कायमाकाशं पवनो यथा ॥१३-४०-५६॥
netrābhyāṃ netrayorasyā raśmīn saṃyojya raśmibhiḥ। viveśa vipulaḥ kāyam ākāśaṃ pavano yathā ॥13-40-56॥
[नेत्राभ्यां (netrābhyām) - by the two eyes; नेत्रयोः (netrayor) - of the two eyes; अस्या (asyā) - of her; रश्मीन् (raśmīn) - rays; संयोज्य (saṃyojya) - having joined; रश्मिभिः (raśmibhiḥ) - with rays; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - vast; कायम् (kāyam) - body; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - sky; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - wind; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(By the two eyes, of the two eyes of her, rays having joined, with rays, entered, vast, body, sky, wind, just as.)
Just as the wind enters the vast sky, having joined the rays from her two eyes with rays, he entered her vast body. (13-40-56)
लक्षणं लक्षणेनैव वदनं वदनेन च। अविचेष्टन्नतिष्ठद्वै छायेवान्तर्गतो मुनिः ॥१३-४०-५७॥
lakṣaṇaṃ lakṣaṇenaiva vadanaṃ vadanena ca। aviceṣṭannatiṣṭhadvai chāyevāntargato muniḥ ॥13-40-57॥
[लक्षणं (lakṣaṇam) - mark; लक्षणेन (lakṣaṇena) - by the mark; एव (eva) - indeed; वदनं (vadanam) - face; वदनेन (vadanena) - by the face; च (ca) - and; अविचेष्टन् (aviceṣṭan) - not moving; अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - remained; वै (vai) - indeed; छायैव (chāyaiva) - like a shadow; अन्तर्गतः (antargataḥ) - entered within; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage;]
(The mark by the mark indeed, the face by the face and, not moving, remained indeed like a shadow entered within, the sage.)
The sage, not moving, remained as if his mark by the mark and his face by the face, like a shadow entered within. (13-40-57)
ततो विष्टभ्य विपुलो गुरुपत्न्याः कलेवरम्। उवास रक्षणे युक्तो न च सा तमबुध्यत ॥१३-४०-५८॥
tato viṣṭabhya vipulo gurupatnyāḥ kalevaram। uvāsa rakṣaṇe yukto na ca sā tamabudhyata ॥13-40-58॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; विष्टभ्य (viṣṭabhya) - having supported; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - the great one; गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the teacher's wife; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; उवास (uvāsa) - remained; रक्षणे (rakṣaṇe) - in protection; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; तम् (tam) - him; अबुध्यत (abudhyata) - became aware;]
(Then, having supported the body of the teacher's wife, the great one remained engaged in protection; and she did not become aware of him. (13-40-58))
Then, the great one supported the body of the teacher's wife and remained there to protect her; but she was not aware of him. (13-40-58)
यं कालं नागतो राजन्गुरुस्तस्य महात्मनः। क्रतुं समाप्य स्वगृहं तं कालं सोऽभ्यरक्षत ॥१३-४०-५९॥
yaṃ kālaṃ nāgato rājan gurus tasya mahātmanaḥ। kratuṃ samāpya svagṛhaṃ taṃ kālaṃ so'bhyarakṣata ॥13-40-59॥
[यं (yaṃ) - which; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; नागतः (nāgataḥ) - not arrived; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; क्रतुं (kratuṃ) - sacrifice; समाप्य (samāpya) - having completed; स्वगृहं (svagṛham) - own house; तं (taṃ) - that; कालं (kālam) - time; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यरक्षत (abhyarakṣata) - protected;]
(Which time not arrived, O king, the teacher of him, the great-souled, sacrifice having completed, own house, that time he protected.)
O king, the teacher of that great-souled one, having completed the sacrifice, protected his own house during the time when he had not arrived. (13-40-59)
