Bhishma said.
ततः कदाचिद्देवेन्द्रो दिव्यरूपवपुर्धरः। इदमन्तरमित्येवं ततोऽभ्यागादथाश्रमम् ॥१३-४१-१॥
tataḥ kadāciddevendro divyarūpavapurdharaḥ। idamantaramityevaṁ tato'bhyāgādathāśramam ॥13-41-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra, lord of the gods; दिव्य (divya) - divine; रूप (rūpa) - form; वपुः (vapuḥ) - body; धरः (dharaḥ) - bearing; इदम् (idam) - this; अन्तरम् (antaram) - interval; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अभ्यागात् (abhyāgāt) - approached; अथ (atha) - then; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage;]
(Then at some time Indra, lord of the gods, bearing a divine form and body, thus thinking 'this interval', in this way, then approached the hermitage.)
Then, at a certain time, Indra, the lord of the gods, assuming a divine form, thus considering this interval, approached the hermitage. (13-41-1)
रूपमप्रतिमं कृत्वा लोभनीयं जनाधिप। दर्शनीयतमो भूत्वा प्रविवेश तमाश्रमम् ॥१३-४१-२॥
rūpamapratimaṃ kṛtvā lobhanīyaṃ janādhipa। darśanīyatamo bhūtvā praviveśa tamāśramam ॥13-41-2॥
[रूपम् (rūpam) - form; अप्रतिमम् (apratimam) - unparalleled; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; लोभनीयं (lobhanīyam) - attractive; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - king; दर्शनीयतमः (darśanīyatamaḥ) - most beautiful; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; तम् (tam) - that; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage;]
(Having made his form unparalleled and attractive, the king, having become most beautiful, entered that hermitage.)
The king, having assumed an unparalleled and attractive form and becoming most beautiful, entered that hermitage. (13-41-2)
स ददर्श तमासीनं विपुलस्य कलेवरम्। निश्चेष्टं स्तब्धनयनं यथालेख्यगतं तथा ॥१३-४१-३॥
sa dadarśa tam āsīnaṃ vipulasya kalevaram। niśceṣṭaṃ stabdhanayanaṃ yathālekhyagataṃ tathā ॥13-41-3॥
[स (sa) - he; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; तम् (tam) - him; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; विपुलस्य (vipulasya) - of great; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; निश्चेष्टम् (niśceṣṭam) - motionless; स्तब्धनयनम् (stabdhanayanam) - with fixed eyes; यथा (yathā) - as; लेख्यगतम् (lekhyagatam) - in a painting; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(He saw him seated, of great body, motionless, with fixed eyes, as in a painting, so.)
He saw him seated there, with a great body, motionless, his eyes fixed, just like a figure in a painting. (13-41-3)
रुचिं च रुचिरापाङ्गीं पीनश्रोणिपयोधराम्। पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षीं सम्पूर्णेन्दुनिभाननाम् ॥१३-४१-४॥
ruciṃ ca rucirāpāṅgīṃ pīnaśroṇipayodharām। padmapatraviśālākṣīṃ sampūrṇendunibhānanām ॥13-41-4॥
[रुचिम् (rucim) - lustre; च (ca) - and; रुचिरापाङ्गीम् (rucirāpāṅgīm) - with beautiful side-glances; पीनश्रोणि (pīnaśroṇi) - with full hips; पयोधराम् (payodharām) - with breasts; पद्मपत्र (padmapatra) - lotus-leaf; विशालाक्षीम् (viśālākṣīm) - large-eyed; सम्पूर्णेन्दु (sampūrṇendu) - full moon; निभ (nibha) - resembling; आननाम् (ānanām) - face;]
(Lustre and with beautiful side-glances, with full hips and breasts, lotus-leaf large-eyed, full moon resembling face.)
She has lustre, beautiful side-glances, full hips and breasts, large lotus-leaf-like eyes, and a face resembling the full moon. (13-41-4)
सा तमालोक्य सहसा प्रत्युत्थातुमियेष ह। रूपेण विस्मिता कोऽसीत्यथ वक्तुमिहेच्छती ॥१३-४१-५॥
sā tam ālokya sahasā pratyutthātum iyeṣa ha। rūpeṇa vismitā ko'sīty atha vaktum ihecchatī ॥13-41-5॥
[सा (sā) - she; तम् (tam) - him; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; प्रत्युत्थातुम् (pratyutthātum) - to rise up towards; इयेष (iyeṣa) - she desired; ह (ha) - indeed; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; विस्मिता (vismitā) - astonished; कः (kaḥ) - who; असि (asi) - are (you); इति (iti) - thus; अथ (atha) - then; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; इह (iha) - here; इच्छती (icchatī) - desiring;]
(She, having seen him, suddenly desired to rise up indeed; astonished by (his) form, (she) desiring to speak here "Who are you?" then.)
She saw him and suddenly wished to rise; astonished by his appearance, she wanted to say here, "Who are you?" (13-41-5)
उत्थातुकामापि सती व्यतिष्ठद्विपुलेन सा। निगृहीता मनुष्येन्द्र न शशाक विचेष्टितुम् ॥१३-४१-६॥
utthātukāmāpi satī vyatiṣṭhadvipulena sā। nigṛhītā manuṣyendra na śaśāka viceṣṭitum ॥13-41-6॥
[उत्थातुकामा (utthātukāmā) - desiring to rise; अपि (api) - even; सती (satī) - she being; व्यतिष्ठत् (vyatiṣṭhat) - remained; विपुलेन (vipulena) - by the strong; सा (sā) - she; निगृहीता (nigṛhītā) - restrained; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; विचेष्टितुम् (viceṣṭitum) - to move;]
(Desiring to rise even, she being, remained by the strong, she, restrained, O king of men, not was able to move.)
O king of men, even though she desired to rise, she, being restrained by the strong one, was not able to move. (13-41-6)
तामाबभाषे देवेन्द्रः साम्ना परमवल्गुना। त्वदर्थमागतं विद्धि देवेन्द्रं मां शुचिस्मिते ॥१३-४१-७॥
tām ābabhāṣe devendraḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā। tvad-artham-āgatam viddhi devendram māṃ śucismite ॥13-41-7॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; आबभाषे (ābabhāṣe) - addressed; देवेन्द्रः (devendraḥ) - Indra, lord of the gods; साम्ना (sāmnā) - with gentle speech; परमवल्गुना (paramavalgunā) - with utmost sweetness; त्वदर्थम् (tvadartham) - for your sake; आगतं (āgatam) - come; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; देवेन्द्रम् (devendram) - Indra, lord of the gods; माम् (mām) - me; शुचिस्मिते (śucismite) - O pure-smiled one;]
(Her addressed Indra, lord of the gods, with gentle speech, with utmost sweetness. For your sake come, know Indra, lord of the gods, me, O pure-smiled one. (13-41-7))
Indra, lord of the gods, addressed her with the gentlest and sweetest words: "O pure-smiled one, know that I, Indra, have come here for your sake." (13-41-7)
क्लिश्यमानमनङ्गेन त्वत्सङ्कल्पोद्भवेन वै। तत्पर्याप्नुहि मां सुभ्रु पुरा कालोऽतिवर्तते ॥१३-४१-८॥
kliśyamānam anaṅgena tvat-saṅkalpa-udbhavena vai। tat paryāpnuhi māṃ subhru purā kālaḥ ativartate ॥13-41-8॥
[क्लिश्यमानम् (kliśyamānam) - being afflicted; अनङ्गेन (anaṅgena) - by Kāma (the bodiless one); त्वत् (tvat) - your; सङ्कल्प (saṅkalpa) - resolve; उद्भवेन (udbhavena) - arisen from; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; पर्याप्नुहि (paryāpnuhi) - fulfill; माम् (mām) - me; सुभ्रु (subhru) - O beautiful-browed one; पुरा (purā) - before; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अतिवर्तते (ativartate) - passes by;]
(Being afflicted by Kāma, indeed arisen from your resolve, fulfill that for me, O beautiful-browed one, before time passes by.)
O beautiful-browed one, being tormented by Kāma who has arisen from your own resolve, please fulfill this for me before time passes by. (13-41-8)
तमेवंवादिनं शक्रं शुश्राव विपुलो मुनिः। गुरुपत्न्याः शरीरस्थो ददर्श च सुराधिपम् ॥१३-४१-९॥
tamevaṃvā­dinaṃ śakraṃ śuśrāva vipulo muniḥ। gurupatnyāḥ śarīrastho dadarśa ca surādhipam ॥13-41-9॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवंवादिनम् (evaṃvādinam) - thus-speaking; शक्रम् (śakram) - Śakra (Indra); शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula (name); मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the guru's wife; शरीरस्थः (śarīrasthaḥ) - situated in the body; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; च (ca) - and; सुराधिपम् (surādhipam) - the lord of the gods;]
(Him thus-speaking Śakra heard Vipula sage; of the guru's wife situated in the body saw and the lord of the gods.)
Vipula, the sage, heard Śakra speaking thus; while situated in the body of the guru's wife, he also saw the lord of the gods. (13-41-9)
न शशाक च सा राजन्प्रत्युत्थातुमनिन्दिता। वक्तुं च नाशकद्राजन्विष्टब्धा विपुलेन सा ॥१३-४१-१०॥
na śaśāka ca sā rājanpratyutthātumaninditā। vaktuṃ ca nāśakadrājanviṣṭabdhā vipulena sā ॥13-41-10॥
[न (na) - not; शशाक (śaśāka) - was able; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रत्युत्थातुम् (pratyutthātum) - to rise up; अनिन्दिता (aninditā) - blameless; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; अशकद् (aśakad) - was able; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विष्टब्धा (viṣṭabdhā) - stiffened; विपुलेन (vipulena) - with broad (chest); सा (sā) - she;]
(Not was able and she, O king, to rise up, blameless; to speak and not was able, O king, stiffened with broad (chest), she.)
She, O king, blameless, was not able to rise up, nor could she speak; she was stiffened with her broad chest. (13-41-10)
आकारं गुरुपत्न्यास्तु विज्ञाय स भृगूद्वहः। निजग्राह महातेजा योगेन बलवत्प्रभो ॥ बबन्ध योगबन्धैश्च तस्याः सर्वेन्द्रियाणि सः ॥१३-४१-११॥
ākāraṃ gurupatnyāstu vijñāya sa bhṛgūdvahaḥ। nijagrāha mahātejā yogena balavatprabho ॥ babandha yogabandhaiśca tasyāḥ sarvendriyāṇi saḥ ॥13-41-11॥
[आकारम् (ākāram) - form; गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the teacher's wife; तु (tu) - but; विज्ञाय (vijñāya) - having known; सः (saḥ) - he; भृगूद्वहः (bhṛgūdvahaḥ) - the best of the Bhṛgus; निजग्राह (nijagrāha) - seized; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great splendor; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; बलवत्प्रभो (balavatprabho) - O powerful lord; बबन्ध (babandha) - bound; योगबन्धैः (yogabandhaiḥ) - with yogic bonds; च (ca) - and; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; सर्वेन्द्रियाणि (sarvendriyāṇi) - all senses; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(But having known the form of the teacher's wife, he, the best of the Bhṛgus, of great splendor, seized (her) by yoga, O powerful lord. He bound all her senses with yogic bonds.)
But, recognizing the form of the teacher's wife, the illustrious Bhṛgu seized her through his yogic power, O mighty lord. He bound all her senses with yogic restraints. (13-41-11)
तां निर्विकारां दृष्ट्वा तु पुनरेव शचीपतिः। उवाच व्रीडितो राजंस्तां योगबलमोहिताम् ॥१३-४१-१२॥
tāṃ nirvikārāṃ dṛṣṭvā tu punareva śacīpatiḥ। uvāca vrīḍito rājaṃstāṃ yogabalamohitām ॥13-41-12॥
[तां (tāṃ) - her; निर्विकारां (nirvikārāṃ) - unchanging; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - but; पुनरेव (punareva) - again indeed; शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - the lord of Śacī (Indra); उवाच (uvāca) - said; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; राजं (rājam) - O king; तां (tāṃ) - her; योगबलमोहिताम् (yogabalamohitām) - bewildered by the power of yoga;]
(Her unchanging having seen but again indeed the lord of Śacī said ashamed O king her bewildered by the power of yoga.)
But seeing her unchanging, the lord of Śacī (Indra), feeling ashamed, again said to her, O king, as she was bewildered by the power of yoga. (13-41-12)
एह्येहीति ततः सा तं प्रतिवक्तुमियेष च। स तां वाचं गुरोः पत्न्या विपुलः पर्यवर्तयत् ॥१३-४१-१३॥
ehyehīti tataḥ sā taṃ prativaktum iyeṣa ca। sa tāṃ vācaṃ guroḥ patnyā vipulaḥ paryavartayat ॥13-41-13॥
[एहि (ehi) - come; एहि (ehi) - come; इति (iti) - thus; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सा (sā) - she; तं (taṃ) - him; प्रतिवक्तुम् (prativaktum) - to reply; इयेष (iyeṣa) - desired; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; तां (tāṃ) - her; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; पत्न्या (patnyā) - by the wife; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula (name); पर्यवर्तयत् (paryavartayat) - turned away;]
("Come, come," thus then she desired to reply to him and he, Vipula, turned away the speech of the teacher's wife.)
Then, as she said "Come, come," she wished to reply to him, but Vipula turned aside the words of the teacher's wife. (13-41-13)
भोः किमागमने कृत्यमिति तस्याश्च निःसृता। वक्त्राच्छशाङ्कप्रतिमाद्वाणी संस्कारभूषिता ॥१३-४१-१४॥
bhoḥ kim āgamane kṛtyam iti tasyāś ca niḥsṛtā। vaktrāt śaśāṅka-pratimād vāṇī saṃskāra-bhūṣitā ॥13-41-14॥
[भोः (bhoḥ) - O; (vocative particle); किम् (kim) - what; (interrogative pronoun); आगमने (āgamane) - in coming; in arrival; कृत्यम् (kṛtyam) - duty; to be done; इति (iti) - thus; (end of quotation); तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - her; (genitive singular feminine); च (ca) - and; निःसृता (niḥsṛtā) - emerged; issued forth; वक्त्रात् (vaktrāt) - from the face; from the mouth; शशाङ्कप्रतिमात् (śaśāṅka-pratimāt) - moon-like; resembling the moon; वाणी (vāṇī) - speech; voice; संस्कारभूषिता (saṃskāra-bhūṣitā) - adorned with refinement; decorated by culture;]
(O, what duty is there in coming, thus from her also emerged speech adorned with refinement from the face resembling the moon.)
O, what is to be done upon arrival? Thus, from her moon-like face, speech adorned with refinement issued forth. (13-41-14)
व्रीडिता सा तु तद्वाक्यमुक्त्वा परवशा तदा। पुरंदरश्च सन्त्रस्तो बभूव विमनास्तदा ॥१३-४१-१५॥
vrīḍitā sā tu tadvākyam uktvā paravaśā tadā। puraṃdaraś ca santrastō babhūva vimanās tadā ॥13-41-15॥
[व्रीडिता (vrīḍitā) - ashamed; सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; तद्वाक्यम् (tadvākyam) - those words; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; परवशा (paravaśā) - helpless; तदा (tadā) - then; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); च (ca) - and; सन्त्रस्तः (santrastaḥ) - frightened; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - dispirited; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Ashamed she but those words having spoken helpless then; Purandara and frightened became dispirited then.)
But she, ashamed and helpless after speaking those words, and Purandara too, became frightened and dispirited at that time. (13-41-15)
स तद्वैकृतमालक्ष्य देवराजो विशां पते। अवैक्षत सहस्राक्षस्तदा दिव्येन चक्षुषा ॥१३-४१-१६॥
sa tadvaiḳṛtamālakṣya devarājo viśāṃ pate। avaikṣata sahasrākṣastadā divyena cakṣuṣā ॥13-41-16॥
[स (sa) - he; तत् (tat) - that; वैकृतम् (vaiḳṛtam) - change; transformation; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - having observed; having noticed; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king of the gods; Indra; विशां (viśām) - of the people; of men; पते (pate) - O lord; अवैक्षत (avaikṣata) - he saw; he looked; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed one; Indra; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; दिव्येन (divyena) - with divine; celestial; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with eye; with sight;]
(He, having observed that transformation, O lord of the people, the king of the gods, the thousand-eyed one, then saw with divine eye.)
O lord of the people, the king of the gods, Indra, having noticed that transformation, then saw with his divine sight. (13-41-16)
ददर्श च मुनिं तस्याः शरीरान्तरगोचरम्। प्रतिबिम्बमिवादर्शे गुरुपत्न्याः शरीरगम् ॥१३-४१-१७॥
dadarśa ca muniṁ tasyāḥ śarīrāntaragocarām। pratibimbam ivādarśe gurupatnyāḥ śarīragam ॥13-41-17॥
[ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; च (ca) - and; मुनिं (munim) - sage; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; शरीरान्तरगोचरम् (śarīrāntaragocaram) - perceived within the body; प्रतिबिम्बम् (pratibimbam) - reflection; इव (iva) - like; आदर्शे (ādarśe) - in a mirror; गुरुपत्न्याः (gurupatnyāḥ) - of the teacher's wife; शरीरगम् (śarīragam) - present in the body;]
(He saw and the sage, of her, perceived within the body; reflection like in a mirror, of the teacher's wife, present in the body.)
And he saw the sage, who was perceived within her body, like a reflection in a mirror, present in the body of the teacher's wife. (13-41-17)
स तं घोरेण तपसा युक्तं दृष्ट्वा पुरंदरः। प्रावेपत सुसन्त्रस्तः शापभीतस्तदा विभो ॥१३-४१-१८॥
sa taṃ ghoreṇa tapasā yuktaṃ dṛṣṭvā puraṃdaraḥ। prāvepata susantrastaḥ śāpabhītaḥ tadā vibho ॥13-41-18॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - him; घोरेण (ghoreṇa) - by terrible; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - engaged; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); प्रावेपत (prāvepata) - trembled; सुसन्त्रस्तः (susantrastaḥ) - very frightened; शापभीतः (śāpabhītaḥ) - afraid of curse; तदा (tadā) - then; विभो (vibho) - O lord;]
(He him by terrible austerity engaged having seen Purandara trembled very frightened afraid of curse then O lord.)
O lord, then Purandara (Indra), seeing him engaged in terrible austerity, trembled, being very frightened and afraid of a curse. (13-41-18)
विमुच्य गुरुपत्नीं तु विपुलः सुमहातपाः। स्वं कलेवरमाविश्य शक्रं भीतमथाब्रवीत् ॥१३-४१-१९॥
vimucya gurupatnīṃ tu vipulaḥ sumahātapāḥ। svaṃ kalevaram āviśya śakraṃ bhītam athābravīt ॥13-41-19॥
[विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; गुरुपत्नीम् (gurupatnīm) - the teacher's wife; तु (tu) - but; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; स्वम् (svam) - his own; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; भीतम् (bhītam) - frightened; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having released the teacher's wife, but Vipula of great austerity, having entered his own body, then said to Indra, who was frightened.)
Vipula, the one of great austerity, after releasing the teacher's wife, entered his own body and then spoke to Indra, who was frightened. (13-41-19)
अजितेन्द्रिय पापात्मन्कामात्मक पुरंदर। न चिरं पूजयिष्यन्ति देवास्त्वां मानुषास्तथा ॥१३-४१-२०॥
ajitendriya pāpātmankāmātmaka puraṃdara। na ciraṃ pūjayiṣyanti devāstvāṃ mānuṣāstathā ॥13-41-20॥
[अजितेन्द्रिय (ajitendriya) - whose senses are not conquered; पापात्मन् (pāpātman) - wicked-souled; कामात्मक (kāmātmaka) - consisting of desire; पुरंदर (puraṃdara) - O Purandara; न (na) - not; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for long; पूजयिष्यन्ति (pūjayiṣyanti) - will worship; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; मानुषाः (mānuṣāḥ) - humans; तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(O Purandara, whose senses are not conquered, wicked-souled, consisting of desire; not for long will the gods and likewise humans worship you.)
O Purandara, you who have not conquered your senses, whose soul is wicked and filled with desire; neither the gods nor humans will worship you for long. (13-41-20)
किं नु तद्विस्मृतं शक्र न तन्मनसि ते स्थितम्। गौतमेनासि यन्मुक्तो भगाङ्कपरिचिह्नितः ॥१३-४१-२१॥
kiṁ nu tadvismṛtaṁ śakra na tanmanasi te sthitam। gautamenāsi yanmukto bhagāṅkaparicihnitaḥ ॥13-41-21॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; तद्विस्मृतं (tadvismṛtaṁ) - that-forgotten; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; न (na) - not; तन्मनसि (tanmanasi) - in-that-mind; ते (te) - your; स्थितम् (sthitam) - remained; गौतमेन (gautamena) - by Gautama; असि (asi) - you are; यन्मुक्तः (yanmuktaḥ) - which-released; भगाङ्कपरिचिह्नितः (bhagāṅkaparicihnitaḥ) - marked-by-the-sign-of-the-moon;]
(What indeed that-forgotten O Śakra not in-that-mind your remained. By Gautama you are which-released marked-by-the-sign-of-the-moon.)
O Śakra, have you truly forgotten that, or does it not remain in your mind? You were released by Gautama, marked by the sign of the moon. (13-41-21)
जाने त्वां बालिशमतिमकृतात्मानमस्थिरम्। मयेयं रक्ष्यते मूढ गच्छ पाप यथागतम् ॥१३-४१-२२॥
jāne tvāṃ bāliśamatim akṛtātmānam asthiram। mayeyaṃ rakṣyate mūḍha gaccha pāpa yathāgatam ॥13-41-22॥
[जाने (jāne) - I know; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; बालिशमतिम् (bāliśamatim) - with childish mind; अकृतात्मानम् (akṛtātmānam) - uncontrolled self; अस्थिरम् (asthiram) - unstable; मया (mayā) - by me; इयम् (iyam) - this (one); रक्ष्यते (rakṣyate) - is protected; मूढ (mūḍha) - fool; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; पाप (pāpa) - wicked one; यथागतम् (yathāgatam) - as you came;]
(I know you, with childish mind, uncontrolled self, unstable. By me this (one) is protected, fool, go, wicked one, as you came. (13-41-22))
I know you to be of childish mind, uncontrolled and unstable. This one is protected by me, fool; go away, wicked one, the way you came. (13-41-22)
नाहं त्वामद्य मूढात्मन्दहेयं हि स्वतेजसा। कृपायमाणस्तु न ते दग्धुमिच्छामि वासव ॥१३-४१-२३॥
nāhaṃ tvām adya mūḍhātman daheyaṃ hi svatejasā। kṛpāyamāṇas tu na te dagdhum icchāmi vāsava ॥13-41-23॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; मूढात्मन् (mūḍhātman) - deluded-souled one; दहेयम् (daheyaṃ) - should burn; हि (hi) - indeed; स्वतेजसा (svatejasā) - by my own energy; कृपायमाणः (kṛpāyamāṇaḥ) - being compassionate; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; ते (te) - you; दग्धुम् (dagdhum) - to burn; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava;]
(Not I you today, O deluded-souled one, should burn indeed by my own energy; being compassionate but not you to burn I wish, O Vāsava.)
O Vāsava, I do not wish to burn you today, deluded as you are, by my own energy; rather, out of compassion, I do not desire to burn you.
स च घोरतपा धीमान्गुरुर्मे पापचेतसम्। दृष्ट्वा त्वां निर्दहेदद्य क्रोधदीप्तेन चक्षुषा ॥१३-४१-२४॥
sa ca ghoratapā dhīmān gurur me pāpacetasam। dṛṣṭvā tvāṃ nirdahed adya krodhadīptena cakṣuṣā ॥13-41-24॥
[स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; घोरतपा (ghoratapā) - of terrible austerity; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; मे (me) - my; पापचेतसम् (pāpacetasam) - of evil-minded; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; निर्दहेत् (nirdahet) - might burn; अद्य (adya) - today; क्रोधदीप्तेन (krodhadīptena) - with anger-inflamed; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with (his) eye;]
(He and of terrible austerity wise teacher my of evil-minded; having seen you might burn today with anger-inflamed eye.)
And he, my wise teacher of terrible austerity, seeing you, evil-minded as you are, might burn you today with his eye inflamed by anger. (13-41-24)
नैवं तु शक्र कर्तव्यं पुनर्मान्याश्च ते द्विजाः। मा गमः ससुतामात्योऽत्ययं ब्रह्मबलार्दितः ॥१३-४१-२५॥
naivaṁ tu śakra kartavyaṁ punarmānyāś ca te dvijāḥ। mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyo'tyayaṁ brahmabalārditaḥ ॥13-41-25॥
[नैवं (naivaṁ) - not thus; तु (tu) - but; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; कर्तव्यं (kartavyam) - to be done; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; मान्याः (mānyāḥ) - to be respected; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born (Brāhmaṇas); मा (mā) - do not; गमः (gamaḥ) - go; ससुतामात्यः (sasuta-āmātyaḥ) - with son and ministers; अत्ययम् (atyayam) - danger; ब्रह्मबलार्दितः (brahmabala-ārditaḥ) - afflicted by the power of Brahman;]
(Not thus, but, O Śakra, should this be done; again, your Brāhmaṇas are to be respected; do not go, with son and ministers, into danger, afflicted by the power of Brahman.)
O Śakra, this should not be done in this way; your Brāhmaṇas must always be respected. Do not, afflicted by the power of Brahman, go into danger with your son and ministers. (13-41-25)
अमरोऽस्मीति यद्बुद्धिमेतामास्थाय वर्तसे। मावमंस्था न तपसामसाध्यं नाम किञ्चन ॥१३-४१-२६॥
amaro'smīti yadbuddhim etām āsthāya vartase। māvamansṭhā na tapasām asādhyaṃ nāma kiñcana॥13-41-26॥
[अमरः (amaraḥ) - immortal; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; इति (iti) - thus; यत् (yat) - which; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - understanding; एताम् (etām) - this; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having adopted; वर्तसे (vartase) - you act; मा (mā) - do not; अवमंस्था (avamansṭhā) - despise; न (na) - not; तपसाम् (tapasām) - of austerities; असाध्यम् (asādhyam) - unattainable; नाम (nāma) - called; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(Immortal I am thus which understanding this having adopted you act. Do not despise not of austerities unattainable called anything. (13-41-26))
Having adopted the understanding "I am immortal," as you act, do not think that anything called unattainable by austerities exists. (13-41-26)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं शक्रो विपुलस्य महात्मनः। अकिञ्चिदुक्त्वा व्रीडितस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१३-४१-२७॥
tacchrutvā vacanaṃ śakro vipulasya mahātmanaḥ। akiñcid uktvā vrīḍitas tatraivāntaradhīyata ॥13-41-27॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); विपुलस्य (vipulasya) - of the great; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the high-souled; अकिञ्चित् (akiñcit) - nothing; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; व्रीडितः (vrīḍitaḥ) - ashamed; तत्र एव (tatra eva) - right there; अन्तरधीयत (antaradhīyata) - disappeared;]
(That having heard speech Śakra of the great high-souled, nothing having said, ashamed, right there disappeared.)
Having heard the words of the great high-souled one, Śakra, saying nothing and feeling ashamed, disappeared right there. (13-41-27)
मुहूर्तयाते शक्रे तु देवशर्मा महातपाः। कृत्वा यज्ञं यथाकाममाजगाम स्वमाश्रमम् ॥१३-४१-२८॥
muhūrtayāte śakre tu devaśarmā mahātapāḥ। kṛtvā yajñaṃ yathākāmam ājagāma svam āśramam ॥13-41-28॥
[मुहूर्तयाते (muhūrtayāte) - when the moment had passed; शक्रे (śakre) - Indra; तु (tu) - but; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; यज्ञं (yajñam) - sacrifice; यथाकामम् (yathākāmam) - as he desired; आजगाम (ājagāma) - he went; स्वम् (svam) - his own; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage;]
(When the moment had passed, but Indra, Devaśarmā, the great ascetic, having performed the sacrifice as he desired, went to his own hermitage.)
When the auspicious moment had passed and Indra had departed, Devaśarmā, the great ascetic, performed the sacrifice as he wished and then returned to his own hermitage. (13-41-28)
आगतेऽथ गुरौ राजन्विपुलः प्रियकर्मकृत्। रक्षितां गुरवे भार्यां न्यवेदयदनिन्दिताम् ॥१३-४१-२९॥
āgate'tha gurau rājan vipulaḥ priyakarmakṛt। rakṣitāṃ gurave bhāryāṃ nyavedayad aninditām ॥13-41-29॥
[आगते (āgate) - having arrived; अथ (atha) - then; गुरौ (gurau) - to the teacher; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula (name); प्रियकर्मकृत् (priyakarmakṛt) - performer of dear acts; रक्षिताम् (rakṣitām) - protected; गुरवे (gurave) - to the teacher; भार्याम् (bhāryām) - wife; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - he reported; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless;]
(Having arrived then to the teacher, O king, Vipula, performer of dear acts, the protected wife to the teacher blameless he reported.)
O king, when the teacher arrived, Vipula, who performed dear acts, reported to the teacher that the protected wife was blameless. (13-41-29)
अभिवाद्य च शान्तात्मा स गुरुं गुरुवत्सलः। विपुलः पर्युपातिष्ठद्यथापूर्वमशङ्कितः ॥१३-४१-३०॥
abhivādya ca śāntātmā sa guruṃ guruvatsalaḥ। vipulaḥ paryupātiṣṭhadyathāpūrvamaśaṅkitaḥ ॥13-41-30॥
[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; च (ca) - and; शान्तात्मा (śāntātmā) - of peaceful mind; स (sa) - he; गुरुं (guruṃ) - the teacher; गुरुवत्सलः (guruvatsalaḥ) - affectionate towards the teacher; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula; पर्युपातिष्ठत् (paryupātiṣṭhat) - stood near; यथापूर्वम् (yathāpūrvam) - as before; अशङ्कितः (aśaṅkitaḥ) - without suspicion;]
(Having saluted and of peaceful mind, he, affectionate towards the teacher, Vipula, stood near the teacher as before, without suspicion.)
After saluting, the peaceful-minded Vipula, who was affectionate towards his teacher, stood near the teacher as before, without any suspicion. (13-41-30)
विश्रान्ताय ततस्तस्मै सहासीनाय भार्यया। निवेदयामास तदा विपुलः शक्रकर्म तत् ॥१३-४१-३१॥
viśrāntāya tatastasmai sahāsīnāya bhāryayā। nivedayāmāsa tadā vipulaḥ śakrakarama tat ॥13-41-31॥
[विश्रान्ताय (viśrāntāya) - to the one who had rested; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; सह (saha) - together; आसीनाय (āsīnāya) - who was sitting; भार्यया (bhāryayā) - with (his) wife; निवेदयामास (nivedayāmāsa) - he reported; तदा (tadā) - then; विपुलः (vipulaḥ) - Vipula (the name); शक्रकर्म (śakrakarma) - Indra's act; तत् (tat) - that;]
(To the one who had rested, then, to him, together, who was sitting, with (his) wife, he reported, then, Vipula, Indra's act, that.)
Then, when he had rested, Vipula reported to him, who was sitting together with his wife, that act of Indra. (13-41-31)
तच्छ्रुत्वा स मुनिस्तुष्टो विपुलस्य प्रतापवान्। बभूव शीलवृत्ताभ्यां तपसा नियमेन च ॥१३-४१-३२॥
tacchrutvā sa munistuṣṭo vipulasya pratāpavān। babhūva śīlavṛttābhyāṃ tapasā niyamena ca ॥13-41-32॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; स (sa) - he; मुनि (muni) - sage; तुष्टः (tuṣṭaḥ) - pleased; विपुलस्य (vipulasya) - of Vipula; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; बभूव (babhūva) - became; शीलवृत्ताभ्यां (śīlavṛttābhyām) - by virtue and conduct; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; नियमेन (niyamena) - by discipline; च (ca) - and;]
(That having heard, he sage pleased of Vipula powerful became by virtue and conduct, by austerity, by discipline and.)
Having heard that, the sage became pleased with Vipula, who was powerful due to his virtue, conduct, austerity, and discipline. (13-41-32)
विपुलस्य गुरौ वृत्तिं भक्तिमात्मनि च प्रभुः। धर्मे च स्थिरतां दृष्ट्वा साधु साध्वित्युवाच ह ॥१३-४१-३३॥
vipulasya gurau vṛttiṃ bhaktim ātmani ca prabhuḥ। dharme ca sthiratāṃ dṛṣṭvā sādhu sādhv ity uvāca ha ॥13-41-33॥
[विपुलस्य (vipulasya) - of the great; गुरौ (gurau) - in the teacher; वृत्तिं (vṛttim) - conduct; भक्तिम् (bhaktim) - devotion; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in himself; च (ca) - and; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; च (ca) - and; स्थिरताम् (sthiratām) - steadfastness; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; साधु (sādhu) - good; साधु (sādhu) - good; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having seen the conduct of the great in the teacher, devotion in himself, and steadfastness in dharma, the lord indeed said, "Good, good.")
Seeing the noble conduct towards the great teacher, devotion in himself, and steadfastness in dharma, the lord said, "Good, good." (13-41-33)
प्रतिनन्द्य च धर्मात्मा शिष्यं धर्मपरायणम्। वरेण च्छन्दयामास स तस्माद्गुरुवत्सलः ॥ अनुज्ञातश्च गुरुणा चचारानुत्तमं तपः ॥१३-४१-३४॥
pratinandya ca dharmātmā śiṣyaṃ dharmaparāyaṇam। vareṇa cchandayāmāsa sa tasmādguruvatsalaḥ ॥ anujñātaśca guruṇā cacārānuttamaṃ tapaḥ ॥13-41-34॥
[प्रतिनन्द्य (pratinandya) - having greeted; च (ca) - and; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; शिष्यं (śiṣyam) - disciple; धर्मपरायणम् (dharmaparāyaṇam) - devoted to righteousness; वरेण (vareṇa) - with a boon; च्छन्दयामास (cchandayāmāsa) - he offered; स (sa) - he; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - to him; गुरुवत्सलः (guruvatsalaḥ) - affectionate to his teacher; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; च (ca) - and; गुरुणा (guruṇā) - by the teacher; चचार (cacāra) - he practiced; अनुत्तमं (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity;]
(Having greeted, and the righteous-souled (one) (greeted) the disciple devoted to righteousness; with a boon, he offered, he, to him, affectionate to his teacher. Having been permitted and by the teacher, he practiced unsurpassed austerity. (13-41-34))
Having greeted his disciple who was devoted to righteousness, the righteous-souled teacher, affectionate to his pupil, offered him a boon. Having been permitted by his teacher, he practiced the highest austerity. (13-41-34)
तथैव देवशर्मापि सभार्यः स महातपाः। निर्भयो बलवृत्रघ्नाच्चचार विजने वने ॥१३-४१-३५॥
tathaiva devaśarmāpi sabhāryaḥ sa mahātapāḥ। nirbhayo balavṛtraghnāccacāra vijane vane ॥13-41-35॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; अपि (api) - also; सभार्यः (sabhāryaḥ) - with wife; सः (saḥ) - he; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic; निर्भयः (nirbhayaḥ) - fearless; बलवृत्रघ्नात् (balavṛtraghnāt) - from Balavṛtraghna (Indra); च (ca) - and; अचार (cacāra) - wandered; विजने (vijane) - in the lonely; वने (vane) - forest;]
(In the same way, Devaśarmā also, with (his) wife, he, the great ascetic, fearless from Balavṛtraghna, wandered in the lonely forest.)
In the same way, Devaśarmā, together with his wife, that great ascetic, being fearless because of Balavṛtraghna (Indra), wandered in the lonely forest. (13-41-35)
