तमागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य शिष्यं वाक्यमथाब्रवीत्। देवशर्मा महातेजा यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥१३-४३-१॥
tamāgatam abhiprekṣya śiṣyaṃ vākyam athābravīt। devaśarmā mahātejā yat tac chṛṇu narādhipa ॥13-43-1॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; अभिप्रेक्ष्य (abhiprekṣya) - having looked upon; शिष्यं (śiṣyam) - disciple; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;]
(Having looked upon him who had arrived, the disciple, then Devaśarmā of great brilliance spoke words: "That which, hear, O king." (13-43-1))
Seeing his disciple arrive, Devaśarmā, the one of great brilliance, then spoke these words: "O king, listen to what I say." (13-43-1)

किं ते विपुल दृष्टं वै तस्मिन्नद्य महावने। ते त्वा जानन्ति निपुण आत्मा च रुचिरेव च ॥१३-४३-२॥
kiṁ te vipula dṛṣṭaṁ vai tasminnadya mahāvane। te tvā jānanti nipuṇa ātmā ca rucireva ca ॥13-43-2॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; ते (te) - to you; विपुल (vipula) - great; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭaṁ) - seen; वै (vai) - indeed; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अद्य (adya) - today; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; ते (te) - they; त्वा (tvā) - you; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; निपुण (nipuṇa) - skilled; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; च (ca) - and; रुचि (ruci) - pleasure; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(What to you great seen indeed in that today in the great forest? They you know skilled self and pleasure indeed and.)
What great thing have you seen today in that great forest? They know you as skilled, as self and as pleasure indeed. (13-43-2)
विपुल उवाच॥

ब्रह्मर्षे मिथुनं किं तत्के च ते पुरुषा विभो। ये मां जानन्ति तत्त्वेन तांश्च मे वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१३-४३-३॥
brahmarṣe mithunaṃ kiṃ tat ke ca te puruṣā vibho। ye māṃ jānanti tattvena tāṃś ca me vaktum arhasi ॥13-43-3॥
[ब्रह्मर्षे (brahmarṣe) - O sage of Brahman; मिथुनं (mithunaṃ) - pair; किं (kiṃ) - what; तत् (tat) - that; के (ke) - who; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; ये (ye) - who; माम् (mām) - me; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in reality; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(O sage of Brahman, what is that pair, who are your men, O mighty one? Who know me in reality, them also to me you ought to speak.)
O sage of Brahman, what is that pair, and who are your men, O mighty one? Please tell me also about those who truly know me. (13-43-3)
देवशर्मोवाच॥

Devaśarma said.
यद्वै तन्मिथुनं ब्रह्मन्नहोरात्रं हि विद्धि तत्। चक्रवत्परिवर्तेत तत्ते जानाति दुष्कृतम् ॥१३-४३-४॥
yad vai tan mithunaṁ brahman ahorātraṁ hi viddhi tat। cakravat parivarteta tat te jānāti duṣkṛtam ॥13-43-4॥
[यत् (yat) - which; वै (vai) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; मिथुनम् (mithunam) - pair; union; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; अहोरात्रम् (ahorātram) - day and night; हि (hi) - indeed; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; तत् (tat) - that; चक्रवत् (cakravat) - like a wheel; परिवर्तेत (parivarteta) - would revolve; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed;]
(Which indeed that pair, O Brahman, day and night indeed know that; like a wheel would revolve, that to you knows evil deed.)
O Brahman, know that the pair, day and night, indeed revolve like a wheel; that knows your evil deed. (13-43-4)
ये च ते पुरुषा विप्र अक्षैर्दीव्यन्ति हृष्टवत्। ऋतूंस्तानभिजानीहि ते ते जानन्ति दुष्कृतम् ॥१३-४३-५॥
ye ca te puruṣā vipra akṣair dīvyanti hṛṣṭavat। ṛtūṁs tān abhijānīhi te te jānanti duṣkṛtam॥13-43-5॥
[ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - those; पुरुषा (puruṣā) - men; विप्र (vipra) - O wise one; अक्षैः (akṣaiḥ) - with dice; दीव्यन्ति (dīvyanti) - play; हृष्टवत् (hṛṣṭavat) - joyfully; ऋतून् (ṛtūn) - seasons; तान् (tān) - those; अभिजानीहि (abhijānīhi) - recognize; ते (te) - they; ते (te) - they; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - evil deed;]
(Who and those men, O wise one, with dice play joyfully; the seasons those recognize; they, they know evil deed;)
O wise one, those men who play joyfully with dice—recognize them as the seasons; they know evil deeds. (13-43-5)
न मां कश्चिद्विजानीत इति कृत्वा न विश्वसेत्। नरो रहसि पापात्मा पापकं कर्म वै द्विज ॥१३-४३-६॥
na māṃ kaścid vijānīta iti kṛtvā na viśvaset। naro rahasi pāpātmā pāpakaṃ karma vai dvija ॥13-43-6॥
[न (na) - not; माम् (mām) - me; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; विजानीत (vijānīta) - should know; इति (iti) - thus; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having considered; न (na) - not; विश्वसेत् (viśvaset) - should trust; नरः (naraḥ) - man; रहसि (rahasi) - in secret; पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - wicked-souled; पापकं (pāpakaṃ) - evil; कर्म (karma) - action; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(Not me anyone should know thus having considered, not should trust; man in secret wicked-souled evil action indeed O twice-born.)
Thinking 'let no one know me', one should not trust; O twice-born, a wicked-souled man indeed commits evil deeds in secret. (13-43-6)
कुर्वाणं हि नरं कर्म पापं रहसि सर्वदा। पश्यन्ति ऋतवश्चापि तथा दिननिशेऽप्युत ॥१३-४३-७॥
kurvāṇaṃ hi naraṃ karma pāpaṃ rahasi sarvadā। paśyanti ṛtavaś cāpi tathā dinaniśe'pyuta ॥13-43-7॥
[कुर्वाणं (kurvāṇam) - doing; performing; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; नरं (naram) - man; person; कर्म (karma) - action; deed; पापं (pāpam) - sinful; evil; रहसि (rahasi) - in secret; privately; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; at all times; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; observe; ऋतवः (ṛtavaḥ) - seasons; times; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; even; तथा (tathā) - thus; in that way; दिननिशे (dinaniśe) - day and night; अपि (api) - also; even; उत (uta) - and; moreover;]
(Indeed, always, the man doing sinful action in secret, the seasons also see thus, and day and night also.)
Even when a man always commits sinful deeds in secret, the seasons, as well as day and night, observe him thus. (13-43-7)
ते त्वां हर्षस्मितं दृष्ट्वा गुरोः कर्मानिवेदकम्। स्मारयन्तस्तथा प्राहुस्ते यथा श्रुतवान्भवान् ॥१३-४३-८॥
te tvāṃ harṣasmitaṃ dṛṣṭvā guroḥ karmānivedakam। smārayantastathā prāhuste yathā śrutavānbhavān ॥13-43-8॥
[ते (te) - they; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; हर्षस्मितम् (harṣasmitaṃ) - joyful-smiling; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; कर्म (karma) - action; अनिवेदकम् (anivedakam) - not-informing; स्मारयन्तः (smārayantaḥ) - reminding; तथा (tathā) - thus; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they said; ते (te) - they; यथा (yathā) - as; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - you have heard; भवान् (bhavān) - you;]
(They, having seen you joyful-smiling, not informing the teacher of the action, reminding thus, they said to you as you have heard.)
Seeing you with a joyful smile, not having informed the teacher of the action, they reminded you and spoke as you have heard. (13-43-8)
अहोरात्रं विजानाति ऋतवश्चापि नित्यशः। पुरुषे पापकं कर्म शुभं वा शुभकर्मणः ॥१३-४३-९॥
ahorātraṃ vijānāti ṛtavaś cāpi nityaśaḥ। puruṣe pāpakaṃ karma śubhaṃ vā śubhakarmaṇaḥ ॥13-43-9॥
[अहोरात्रम् (ahorātram) - day-and-night; विजानाति (vijānāti) - knows; ऋतवः (ṛtavaḥ) - seasons; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; नित्यशः (nityaśaḥ) - constantly; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in a person; पापकं (pāpakaṃ) - sinful; कर्म (karma) - action; शुभं (śubhaṃ) - auspicious; वा (vā) - or; शुभकर्मणः (śubhakarmaṇaḥ) - of the auspicious action;]
(Day-and-night knows, the seasons also constantly; in a person, sinful action or auspicious, of the auspicious action.)
Day and night, as well as the seasons, constantly know the sinful or auspicious actions in a person, whether of sin or virtue. (13-43-9)
तत्त्वया मम यत्कर्म व्यभिचाराद्भयात्मकम्। नाख्यातमिति जानन्तस्ते त्वामाहुस्तथा द्विज ॥१३-४३-१०॥
tattvayā mama yatkarma vyabhicārādbhayātmakam। nākhyātamiti jānantaste tvāmāhustathā dvija ॥13-43-10॥
[तत्त्वया (tattvayā) - by you in reality; मम (mama) - my; यत् (yat) - which; कर्म (karma) - action; व्यभिचारात् (vyabhicārāt) - from transgression; भयात्मकम् (bhayātmakam) - of the nature of fear; न (na) - not; आख्यातम् (ākhyātam) - declared; इति (iti) - thus; जानन्तः (jānantaḥ) - knowing; ते (te) - they; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; आहुः (āhuḥ) - call; तथा (tathā) - thus; द्विज (dvija) - O twice-born;]
(By you in reality, my which action from transgression, of the nature of fear, not declared, thus, knowing, they, you, call, thus, O twice-born.)
O twice-born, knowing that you have not declared my action which is of the nature of fear arising from transgression, they thus call you so. (13-43-10)
ते चैव हि भवेयुस्ते लोकाः पापकृतो यथा। कृत्वा नाचक्षतः कर्म मम यच्च त्वया कृतम् ॥१३-४३-११॥
te caiva hi bhaveyus te lokāḥ pāpakṛto yathā। kṛtvā nācakṣataḥ karma mama yac ca tvayā kṛtam ॥13-43-11॥
[ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - would become; ते (te) - those; लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; पापकृतः (pāpakṛtaḥ) - evil-doers; यथा (yathā) - as; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; न (na) - not; आचक्षतः (ācakṣataḥ) - declare; कर्म (karma) - action; मम (mama) - my; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(They and indeed for would become those worlds evil-doers as; having done not declare action my which and by you done.)
Those worlds would indeed become like those of evil-doers, if, having performed my action, you do not declare what has been done by you. (13-43-11)
तथा शक्या च दुर्वृत्ता रक्षितुं प्रमदा द्विज। न च त्वं कृतवान्किञ्चिदागः प्रीतोऽस्मि तेन ते ॥१३-४३-१२॥
tathā śakyā ca durvṛttā rakṣituṃ pramadā dvija। na ca tvaṃ kṛtavān kiñcid āgaḥ prīto'smi tena te ॥13-43-12॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; शक्या (śakyā) - able; possible; च (ca) - and; दुर्वृत्ता (durvṛttā) - ill-behaved; wicked; रक्षितुं (rakṣitum) - to protect; to guard; प्रमदा (pramadā) - woman; female; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born; Brāhmaṇa; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - have done; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; something; आगः (āgaḥ) - offense; fault; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; satisfied; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तेन (tena) - by that; because of that; ते (te) - your; to you;]
(Thus able and ill-behaved to protect woman, O twice-born; not and you have done anything offense; pleased I am by that to you.)
Thus, even an ill-behaved woman can be protected, O Brāhmaṇa; and you have not committed any offense. Therefore, I am pleased with you by that. (13-43-12)
यदि त्वहं त्वा दुर्वृत्तमद्राक्षं द्विजसत्तम। शपेयं त्वामहं क्रोधान्न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१३-४३-१३॥
yadi tvahaṁ tvā durvṛttam adrākṣaṁ dvijasattama। śapeyaṁ tvām ahaṁ krodhān na me'trāsti vicāraṇā ॥13-43-13॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; त्व (tva) - you; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; त्वा (tvā) - you (accusative); दुर्वृत्तम् (durvṛttam) - wicked-behaved; अद्राक्षं (adrākṣam) - I saw; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - best of twice-born; शपेयं (śapeyaṁ) - I would curse; त्वाम् (tvām) - you (accusative); अहं (ahaṁ) - I; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; अत्र (atra) - here; अस्ति (asti) - there is; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - deliberation;]
(If you, I, you, wicked-behaved, I saw, best of twice-born, I would curse, you, I, from anger, not, to me, here, there is, deliberation.)
If I had seen you behaving wickedly, O best of twice-born, I would have cursed you out of anger; here, there is no deliberation for me. (13-43-13)
सज्जन्ति पुरुषे नार्यः पुंसां सोऽर्थश्च पुष्कलः। अन्यथा रक्षतः शापोऽभविष्यत्ते गतिश्च सा ॥१३-४३-१४॥
sajjanti puruṣe nāryaḥ puṁsāṁ so'rthaśca puṣkalaḥ। anyathā rakṣataḥ śāpo'bhaviṣyatte gatiśca sā ॥13-43-14॥
[सज्जन्ति (sajjanti) - are united; become attached; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in man; नार्यः (nāryaḥ) - women; पुंसां (puṁsām) - of men; सः (saḥ) - that; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; meaning; wealth; च (ca) - and; पुष्कलः (puṣkalaḥ) - abundant; plentiful; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; रक्षतः (rakṣataḥ) - protecting; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; अभविष्यत् (abhaviṣyat) - would have occurred; ते (te) - to you; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; condition; path; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - that; she;]
(Women are united in man; of men that purpose and (is) abundant; otherwise, protecting, a curse would have occurred to you and that state.)
Women become attached to men; for men, that purpose is abundant. Otherwise, if you had not protected, a curse would have befallen you and that would have been your state. (13-43-14)
रक्षिता सा त्वया पुत्र मम चापि निवेदिता। अहं ते प्रीतिमांस्तात स्वस्ति स्वर्गं गमिष्यसि ॥१३-४३-१५॥
rakṣitā sā tvayā putra mama cāpi niveditā। ahaṃ te prītimāṃs tāta svasti svargaṃ gamiṣyasi ॥13-43-15॥
[रक्षिता (rakṣitā) - protected; सा (sā) - she; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुत्र (putra) - son; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; निवेदिता (niveditā) - informed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ते (te) - to you; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - affectionate; तात (tāta) - dear; स्वस्ति (svasti) - welfare; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - heaven; गमिष्यसि (gamiṣyasi) - you will go;]
(Protected she by you, son, and also informed by me; I, affectionate to you, dear, welfare, heaven, you will go.)
She has been protected by you, my son, and also informed by me; I, who am affectionate to you, dear one, wish you welfare—may you go to heaven. (13-43-15)

Bhishma said.
इत्युक्त्वा विपुलं प्रीतो देवशर्मा महानृषिः। मुमोद स्वर्गमास्थाय सहभार्यः सशिष्यकः ॥१३-४३-१६॥
ity uktvā vipulaṃ prīto devaśarmā mahān ṛṣiḥ। mumoda svargam āsthāya sahabhāryaḥ saśiṣyakaḥ ॥13-43-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; विपुलं (vipulaṃ) - great; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; देवशर्मा (devaśarmā) - Devaśarmā; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; मुमोद (mumoda) - rejoiced; स्वर्गम् (svargam) - heaven; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having attained; सहभार्यः (sahabhāryaḥ) - with his wife; सशिष्यकः (saśiṣyakaḥ) - with his disciples;]
(Thus having said, greatly pleased, Devaśarmā, the great sage, rejoiced, having attained heaven, with his wife and with his disciples.)
Having thus spoken, the greatly pleased Devaśarmā, the great sage, rejoiced in heaven together with his wife and disciples. (13-43-16)
इदमाख्यातवांश्चापि ममाख्यानं महामुनिः। मार्कण्डेयः पुरा राजन्गङ्गाकूले कथान्तरे ॥१३-४३-१७॥
idam ākhyātavāṁś cāpi mamākhyānaṁ mahāmuniḥ। mārkaṇḍeyaḥ purā rājan gaṅgākūle kathāntare ॥13-43-17॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; आख्यातवान् (ākhyātavān) - has narrated; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; मम (mama) - my; आख्यानम् (ākhyānam) - narration; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya; पुरा (purā) - formerly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga; कूले (kūle) - on the bank; कथा (kathā) - story; अन्तरे (antare) - in another;]
(This has narrated and also my narration the great sage Markandeya formerly O king on the bank of Ganga in another story.)
O king, the great sage Markandeya formerly narrated this and my narration as another story on the bank of the Ganga. (13-43-17)
तस्माद्ब्रवीमि पार्थ त्वा स्त्रियः सर्वाः सदैव च। उभयं दृश्यते तासु सततं साध्वसाधु च ॥१३-४३-१८॥
tasmād bravīmi pārtha tvā striyaḥ sarvāḥ sadaiva ca। ubhayaṃ dṛśyate tāsu satataṃ sādhvasādhu ca ॥13-43-18॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; from that; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; I declare; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; O son of Pritha; त्वा (tvā) - to you; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; च (ca) - and; उभयं (ubhayaṃ) - both; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; तासु (tāsu) - in them; सततम् (satatam) - always; continually; साधु (sādhu) - good; असाधु (asādhu) - not good; bad; च (ca) - and;]
(Therefore I say, O Pārtha, to you: women, all, always and, both is seen in them always, good and not good and.)
Therefore, O Pārtha, I tell you: in all women, both good and bad are always seen. (13-43-18)
स्त्रियः साध्व्यो महाभागाः संमता लोकमातरः। धारयन्ति महीं राजन्निमां सवनकाननाम् ॥१३-४३-१९॥
striyaḥ sādhvyo mahābhāgāḥ saṁmatā lokamātaraḥ। dhārayanti mahīṁ rājannimāṁ savanakānanām ॥13-43-19॥
[स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; साध्व्यः (sādhvyaḥ) - virtuous ones; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate ones; संमता (saṁmatā) - respected; लोकमातरः (lokamātaraḥ) - mothers of the world; धारयन्ति (dhārayanti) - support; महीं (mahīm) - the earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इमाम् (imām) - this; सवनकाननाम् (savanakānanām) - of those with sacrificial forests;]
(Women, virtuous, greatly fortunate, respected, mothers of the world, support the earth, O king, this, of those with sacrificial forests.)
O king, these women, who are virtuous, greatly fortunate, respected, and mothers of the world, support this earth of those with sacrificial forests. (13-43-19)
असाध्व्यश्चापि दुर्वृत्ताः कुलघ्न्यः पापनिश्चयाः। विज्ञेया लक्षणैर्दुष्टैः स्वगात्रसहजैर्नृप ॥१३-४३-२०॥
asādhvyaś cāpi durvṛttāḥ kulaghnyaḥ pāpaniścayāḥ। vijñeyā lakṣaṇair duṣṭaiḥ svagātrasahajair nṛpa ॥13-43-20॥
[असाध्व्यः (asādhvyaḥ) - unvirtuous women; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दुर्वृत्ताः (durvṛttāḥ) - ill-behaved; कुलघ्न्यः (kulaghnyaḥ) - destroyers of family; पापनिश्चयाः (pāpaniścayāḥ) - intent on evil; विज्ञेया (vijñeyā) - should be known; लक्षणैः (lakṣaṇaiḥ) - by characteristics; दुष्टैः (duṣṭaiḥ) - evil; स्वगात्रसहजैः (svagātrasahajaiḥ) - innate to their own body; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Unvirtuous women and also ill-behaved, destroyers of family, intent on evil, should be known by evil characteristics innate to their own body, O king.)
O king, unvirtuous women, those of bad conduct, destroyers of families, and those intent on evil should be recognized by the evil characteristics that are innate to their own bodies. (13-43-20)
एवमेतासु रक्षा वै शक्या कर्तुं महात्मभिः। अन्यथा राजशार्दूल न शक्या रक्षितुं स्त्रियः ॥१३-४३-२१॥
evametāsu rakṣā vai shakyā kartuṃ mahātmabhiḥ। anyathā rājaśārdūla na shakyā rakṣituṃ striyaḥ ॥13-43-21॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; in this way; एतासु (etāsu) - in these (women); रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; वै (vai) - indeed; शक्या (shakyā) - possible; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; to accomplish; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by great souls; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; न (na) - not; शक्या (shakyā) - possible; रक्षितुं (rakṣituṃ) - to protect; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women;]
(Thus, in these (women), protection indeed is possible to do by great souls; otherwise, O tiger among kings, not possible to protect women.)
In this way, O tiger among kings, protection of women is indeed possible by great souls; otherwise, it is not possible to protect women. (13-43-21)
एता हि मनुजव्याघ्र तीक्ष्णास्तीक्ष्णपराक्रमाः। नासामस्ति प्रियो नाम मैथुने सङ्गमे नृभिः ॥१३-४३-२२॥
etā hi manujavyāghra tīkṣṇās tīkṣṇaparākramāḥ। nāsām asti priyo nāma maithune saṅgame nṛbhiḥ ॥13-43-22॥
[एता (etā) - these (feminine); हि (hi) - indeed; मनुजव्याघ्र (manujavyāghra) - O tiger among men; तीक्ष्णाः (tīkṣṇāḥ) - sharp; तीक्ष्णपराक्रमाः (tīkṣṇaparākramāḥ) - of sharp valor; न (na) - not; असाम् (asām) - of these (feminine); अस्ति (asti) - there is; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; नाम (nāma) - by name; मैथुने (maithune) - in sexual union; सङ्गमे (saṅgame) - in intercourse; नृभिः (nṛbhiḥ) - with men;]
(These indeed, O tiger among men, are sharp, of sharp valor; not of these is there one called dear in sexual union, in intercourse with men.)
O tiger among men, these women are indeed sharp and possess fierce valor; among them, in sexual union and intercourse with men, there is no one who is truly called dear. (13-43-22)
एताः कृत्याश्च कार्याश्च कृताश्च भरतर्षभ। न चैकस्मिन्रमन्त्येताः पुरुषे पाण्डुनन्दन ॥१३-४३-२३॥
etāḥ kṛtyāś ca kāryāś ca kṛtāś ca bharatarṣabha। na ca ekasmin ramanti etāḥ puruṣe pāṇḍunandana ॥13-43-23॥
[एताः (etāḥ) - these (feminine plural); कृत्याः (kṛtyāḥ) - duties to be done; च (ca) - and; कार्याः (kāryāḥ) - actions to be performed; च (ca) - and; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - actions done; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एकस्मिन् (ekasmin) - in one (person); रमन्ति (ramanti) - take delight; एताः (etāḥ) - these (feminine plural); पुरुषे (puruṣe) - in a man; पाण्डुनन्दन (pāṇḍunandana) - O son of Pandu;]
(These duties to be done and actions to be performed and actions done, O bull among the Bharatas, do not take delight in one man, O son of Pandu. (13-43-23))
O bull among the Bharatas, these duties to be done, actions to be performed, and actions accomplished do not all reside in one man, O son of Pandu. (13-43-23)
नासु स्नेहो नृभिः कार्यस्तथैवेर्ष्या जनेश्वर। खेदमास्थाय भुञ्जीत धर्ममास्थाय चैव हि ॥१३-४३-२४॥
nāsu sneho nṛbhiḥ kāryas tathaive'rṣyā janeśvara। khedam āsthāya bhuñjīta dharmam āsthāya caiva hi ॥13-43-24॥
[न (na) - not; असु (asu) - towards them (these); स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; नृभिः (nṛbhiḥ) - by men; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; तथा (tathā) - likewise; एव (eva) - indeed; ईर्ष्या (īrṣyā) - envy; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of people; खेदम् (khedam) - distress; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; भुञ्जीत (bhuñjīta) - one should enjoy; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for;]
(Not towards them affection by men should be done; likewise indeed envy, O lord of people. Having resorted to distress, one should enjoy; having resorted to righteousness and indeed for.)
O lord of people, neither affection nor envy should be shown by men towards them. One should act with endurance of hardship and adherence to righteousness. (13-43-24)
विहन्येतान्यथा कुर्वन्नरः कौरवनन्दन। सर्वथा राजशार्दूल युक्तिः सर्वत्र पूज्यते ॥१३-४३-२५॥
vihanyetānyathā kurvannarāḥ kauravanandana। sarvathā rājaśārdūla yuktiḥ sarvatra pūjyate ॥13-43-25॥
[विहन्येत (vihanyeta) - would be destroyed; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; नरः (naraḥ) - man; कौरवनन्दन (kauravanandana) - O joy of the Kauravas; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; युक्तिः (yuktiḥ) - strategy; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; पूज्यते (pūjyate) - is honored;]
(Would be destroyed otherwise doing man O joy of the Kauravas. In every way O tiger among kings strategy everywhere is honored.)
O joy of the Kauravas, a man acting otherwise would be destroyed. O tiger among kings, strategy is honored everywhere in every way. (13-43-25)
तेनैकेन तु रक्षा वै विपुलेन कृता स्त्रियाः। नान्यः शक्तो नृलोकेऽस्मिन्रक्षितुं नृप योषितः ॥१३-४३-२६॥
tenaikena tu rakṣā vai vipulena kṛtā striyāḥ। nānyaḥ śakto nṛloke'smin rakṣituṃ nṛpa yoṣitaḥ॥13-43-26॥
[तेन (tena) - by him; by that one; एकेन (ekena) - by one; by the one; तु (tu) - but; रक्षा (rakṣā) - protection; वै (vai) - indeed; विपुलेन (vipulena) - by the great; by the ample; कृता (kṛtā) - done; made; स्त्रियाः (striyāḥ) - of the woman; of the lady; न (na) - not; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; other; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; capable; नृलोके (nṛloke) - in the world of men; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; रक्षितुम् (rakṣitum) - to protect; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; योषितः (yoṣitaḥ) - women;]
(But by that one, indeed, protection by the great was done for the woman; no other is able in this world of men, O king, to protect women.)
But by that one alone, O king, was great protection given to the woman; no one else in this world of men is able to protect women. (13-43-26)
