भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhishma said.
प्राचेतसस्य वचनं कीर्तयन्ति पुराविदः। यस्याः किञ्चिन्नाददते ज्ञातयो न स विक्रयः ॥१३-४६-१॥
The knowers of ancient times praise the statement of the son of Pracetas: that which the relatives do not take anything from is not a sale. (13-46-1)
अर्हणं तत्कुमारीणामानृशंस्यतमं च तत्। सर्वं च प्रतिदेयं स्यात्कन्यायै तदशेषतः ॥१३-४६-२॥
That honouring of maidens, which is most compassionate, and all of that should be given entirely to the maiden. (13-46-2)
पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिश्चैव श्वशुरैरथ देवरैः। पूज्या लालयितव्याश्च बहुकल्याणमीप्सुभिः ॥१३-४६-३॥
Women should be honored and cherished by fathers, brothers, fathers-in-law, and brothers-in-law, and by all those who desire great welfare. (13-46-3)
यदि वै स्त्री न रोचेत पुमांसं न प्रमोदयेत्। अमोदनात्पुनः पुंसः प्रजनं न प्रवर्धते ॥१३-४६-४॥
If a woman is not pleased, she does not excite the man. Because of lack of pleasure, the man's procreation does not increase. (13-46-4)
पूज्या लालयितव्याश्च स्त्रियो नित्यं जनाधिप। अपूजिताश्च यत्रैताः सर्वास्तत्राफलाः क्रियाः ॥ तदैव तत्कुलं नास्ति यदा शोचन्ति जामयः ॥१३-४६-५॥
O lord of people, women are always to be worshipped and cherished. Wherever these (women) are not worshipped, all actions there are fruitless. That family indeed does not exist when the wives lament. (13-46-5)
जामीशप्तानि गेहानि निकृत्तानीव कृत्यया। नैव भान्ति न वर्धन्ते श्रिया हीनानि पार्थिव ॥१३-४६-६॥
O king, houses cursed by co-wives, as if cut off by witchcraft, do not shine nor prosper when deprived of prosperity. (13-46-6)
स्त्रियः पुंसां परिददे मनुर्जिगमिषुर्दिवम्। अबलाः स्वल्पकौपीनाः सुहृदः सत्यजिष्णवः ॥१३-४६-७॥
Manu, desiring to ascend to heaven, distributed the women of men; those who were weak, wore little loincloths, were friends, and were victorious in truth. (13-46-7)
ईर्ष्यवो मानकामाश्च चण्डा असुहृदोऽबुधाः। स्त्रियो माननमर्हन्ति ता मानयत मानवाः ॥१३-४६-८॥
Envious, respect-seeking, fierce, unfriendly, and ignorant people, as well as women, deserve to be honored; therefore, O humans, honor them. (13-46-8)
स्त्रीप्रत्ययो हि वो धर्मो रतिभोगाश्च केवलाः। परिचर्यान्नसंस्कारास्तदायत्ता भवन्तु वः ॥१३-४६-९॥
Your duty is indeed based on women, and your pleasures are only those of love; service, food, and purificatory rites may be dependent on that for you. (13-46-9)
उत्पादनमपत्यस्य जातस्य परिपालनम्। प्रीत्यर्थं लोकयात्रा च पश्यत स्त्रीनिबन्धनम् ॥१३-४६-१०॥
The creation of children, their protection after birth, affection, and the conduct of worldly life—all these, behold, are bound up with women. (13-46-10)
संमान्यमानाश्चैताभिः सर्वकार्याण्यवाप्स्यथ। विदेहराजदुहिता चात्र श्लोकमगायत ॥१३-४६-११॥
Being honored by these women, you will accomplish all tasks. Here, the daughter of the king of Videha also sang a verse. (13-46-11)
नास्ति यज्ञः स्त्रियः कश्चिन्न श्राद्धं नोपवासकम्। धर्मस्तु भर्तृशुश्रूषा तया स्वर्गं जयत्युत ॥१३-४६-१२॥
For women, there is no sacrifice, nor any śrāddha or fasting; their duty is service to the husband, and by this, she certainly attains heaven. (13-46-12)
पिता रक्षति कौमारे भर्ता रक्षति यौवने। पुत्रास्तु स्थविरीभावे न स्त्री स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति ॥१३-४६-१३॥
A father protects a woman in childhood, a husband protects her in youth, and sons protect her in old age; a woman does not deserve independence. (13-46-13)
श्रिय एताः स्त्रियो नाम सत्कार्या भूतिमिच्छता। लालिता निगृहीता च स्त्री श्रीर्भवति भारत ॥१३-४६-१४॥
These women, called embodiments of fortune, should be honored by one who desires prosperity. A woman who is cherished and restrained becomes the very embodiment of fortune, O Bhārata. (13-46-14)
