Bhishma said.
प्राचेतसस्य वचनं कीर्तयन्ति पुराविदः। यस्याः किञ्चिन्नाददते ज्ञातयो न स विक्रयः ॥१३-४६-१॥
prācetasyasya vacanaṃ kīrtayanti purāvidaḥ। yasyāḥ kiñcin nādadate jñātayo na sa vikrayaḥ ॥13-46-1॥
[प्राचेतसस्य (prācetasyasya) - of the son of Pracetas (Dakṣa); वचनं (vacanam) - speech; कीर्तयन्ति (kīrtayanti) - they praise; पुराविदः (purāvidaḥ) - knowers of ancient times; यस्याः (yasyāḥ) - of whom; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; न (na) - not; आददते (ādadate) - take; ज्ञातयः (jñātayaḥ) - relatives; न (na) - not; स (sa) - that; विक्रयः (vikrayaḥ) - sale;]
(The speech of the son of Pracetas they praise, the knowers of ancient times; of whom the relatives do not take anything, that is not a sale.)
The knowers of ancient times praise the statement of the son of Pracetas: that which the relatives do not take anything from is not a sale. (13-46-1)
अर्हणं तत्कुमारीणामानृशंस्यतमं च तत्। सर्वं च प्रतिदेयं स्यात्कन्यायै तदशेषतः ॥१३-४६-२॥
arhaṇaṃ tat-kumārīṇām ānṛśaṃsyatamaṃ ca tat। sarvaṃ ca pratideyaṃ syāt kanyāyai tad aśeṣataḥ ॥13-46-2॥
[अर्हणम् (arhaṇam) - honouring; तत् (tat) - that; कुमारीणाम् (kumārīṇām) - of maidens; आनृशंस्यतमम् (ānṛśaṃsyatamam) - most compassionate; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; च (ca) - and; प्रतिदेयं (pratideyaṃ) - should be given; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; कन्यायै (kanyāyai) - to the maiden; तत् (tat) - that; अशेषतः (aśeṣataḥ) - entirely;]
(Honouring that of maidens, most compassionate and that; all and should be given should be to the maiden that entirely;)
That honouring of maidens, which is most compassionate, and all of that should be given entirely to the maiden. (13-46-2)
पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिश्चैव श्वशुरैरथ देवरैः। पूज्या लालयितव्याश्च बहुकल्याणमीप्सुभिः ॥१३-४६-३॥
pitṛbhir bhrātṛbhiś caiva śvaśurair atha devaraiḥ। pūjyā lālayitavyāś ca bahukalyāṇam īpsubhiḥ॥13-46-3॥
[पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - by fathers; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; श्वशुरैः (śvaśuraiḥ) - by fathers-in-law; अथ (atha) - and; देवरैः (devaraiḥ) - by brothers-in-law; पूज्या (pūjyā) - to be honored; लालयितव्याः (lālayitavyāḥ) - to be cherished; च (ca) - and; बहु (bahu) - much; कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - welfare; ईप्सुभिः (īpsubhiḥ) - by those desiring;]
(By fathers, by brothers, and indeed by fathers-in-law and by brothers-in-law, to be honored and to be cherished, and by those desiring much welfare.)
Women should be honored and cherished by fathers, brothers, fathers-in-law, and brothers-in-law, and by all those who desire great welfare. (13-46-3)
यदि वै स्त्री न रोचेत पुमांसं न प्रमोदयेत्। अमोदनात्पुनः पुंसः प्रजनं न प्रवर्धते ॥१३-४६-४॥
yadi vai strī na roceta pumāṁsaṁ na pramodayet। amodanātpunaḥ puṁsaḥ prajanaṁ na pravardhate ॥13-46-4॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; स्त्री (strī) - woman; न (na) - not; रोचेत (roceta) - would be pleased; पुमांसं (pumāṁsaṁ) - man; न (na) - not; प्रमोदयेत् (pramodayet) - would excite; अमोदनात् (amodanāt) - from non-pleasure; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुंसः (puṁsaḥ) - of man; प्रजनं (prajanaṁ) - procreation; न (na) - not; प्रवर्धते (pravardhate) - increases;]
(If indeed woman not would be pleased man not would excite. From non-pleasure again of man procreation not increases.)
If a woman is not pleased, she does not excite the man. Because of lack of pleasure, the man's procreation does not increase. (13-46-4)
पूज्या लालयितव्याश्च स्त्रियो नित्यं जनाधिप। अपूजिताश्च यत्रैताः सर्वास्तत्राफलाः क्रियाः ॥ तदैव तत्कुलं नास्ति यदा शोचन्ति जामयः ॥१३-४६-५॥
pūjyā lālayitavyāś ca striyo nityaṃ janādhipa। apūjitāś ca yatraitāḥ sarvāḥ tatra aphalāḥ kriyāḥ ॥ tadaiva tatkulaṃ nāsti yadā śocanti jāmayaḥ ॥13-46-5॥
[पूज्या (pūjyā) - worthy of worship; लालयितव्याः (lālayitavyāḥ) - to be cherished; च (ca) - and; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - lord of people; अपूजिताः (apūjitāḥ) - not worshipped; च (ca) - and; यत्र (yatra) - where; एताः (etāḥ) - these; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; तत्र (tatra) - there; अफलाः (aphalāḥ) - fruitless; क्रियाः (kriyāḥ) - actions; तदा (tadā) - then; एव (eva) - indeed; तत्कुलं (tatkulaṃ) - that family; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; यदा (yadā) - when; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - lament; जामयः (jāmayaḥ) - wives;]
(Worthy of worship, to be cherished and women always, O lord of people. Not worshipped and where these all, there fruitless actions. Then indeed that family does not exist when lament wives.)
O lord of people, women are always to be worshipped and cherished. Wherever these (women) are not worshipped, all actions there are fruitless. That family indeed does not exist when the wives lament. (13-46-5)
जामीशप्तानि गेहानि निकृत्तानीव कृत्यया। नैव भान्ति न वर्धन्ते श्रिया हीनानि पार्थिव ॥१३-४६-६॥
jāmīśaptāni gehāni nikṛttānīva kṛtyayā। naiva bhānti na vardhante śriyā hīnāni pārthiva ॥13-46-6॥
[जामीशप्तानि (jāmīśaptāni) - cursed by co-wives; गेहानि (gehāni) - houses; निकृत्तानि (nikṛttāni) - cut off; इव (iva) - as if; कृत्यया (kṛtyayā) - by witchcraft; नैव (na eva) - not indeed; भान्ति (bhānti) - shine; न (na) - not; वर्धन्ते (vardhante) - grow; श्रिया (śriyā) - by prosperity; हीनानि (hīnāni) - deprived; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king;]
(Houses cursed by co-wives, as if cut off by witchcraft, indeed do not shine nor grow, deprived of prosperity, O king.)
O king, houses cursed by co-wives, as if cut off by witchcraft, do not shine nor prosper when deprived of prosperity. (13-46-6)
स्त्रियः पुंसां परिददे मनुर्जिगमिषुर्दिवम्। अबलाः स्वल्पकौपीनाः सुहृदः सत्यजिष्णवः ॥१३-४६-७॥
striyaḥ puṁsāṁ paridade manurjigamiṣurdivam। abalāḥ svalpakaupīnāḥ suhṛdaḥ satyajiṣṇavaḥ ॥13-46-7॥
[स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; पुंसां (puṁsām) - of men; परिददे (paridade) - gave around; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; जिगमिषुः (jigamiṣuḥ) - desiring to go; दिवम् (divam) - to heaven; अबलाः (abalāḥ) - weak ones; स्वल्पकौपीनाः (svalpakaupīnāḥ) - with little loincloth; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; सत्यजिष्णवः (satyajiṣṇavaḥ) - truth-victorious;]
(Women of men Manu gave around, desiring to go to heaven; weak ones, with little loincloth, friends, truth-victorious.)
Manu, desiring to ascend to heaven, distributed the women of men; those who were weak, wore little loincloths, were friends, and were victorious in truth. (13-46-7)
ईर्ष्यवो मानकामाश्च चण्डा असुहृदोऽबुधाः। स्त्रियो माननमर्हन्ति ता मानयत मानवाः ॥१३-४६-८॥
īrṣyavo mānakāmāś ca caṇḍā asuhṛdo'budhāḥ। striyo mānanam arhanti tā mānaya ta mānavāḥ ॥13-46-8॥
[ईर्ष्यवः (īrṣyavaḥ) - envious ones; मानकामाः (mānakāmāḥ) - desirous of respect; च (ca) - and; चण्डाः (caṇḍāḥ) - fierce ones; असुहृदः (asuhṛdaḥ) - unfriendly ones; अबुधाः (abudhāḥ) - ignorant ones; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; माननम् (mānanam) - honor; अर्हन्ति (arhanti) - deserve; ता (tā) - them; मानयत (mānayata) - honor (you all); मानवाः (mānavāḥ) - O humans;]
(Envious ones, desirous of respect, and fierce, unfriendly, ignorant ones; women deserve honor; them honor, O humans; (13-46-8))
Envious, respect-seeking, fierce, unfriendly, and ignorant people, as well as women, deserve to be honored; therefore, O humans, honor them. (13-46-8)
स्त्रीप्रत्ययो हि वो धर्मो रतिभोगाश्च केवलाः। परिचर्यान्नसंस्कारास्तदायत्ता भवन्तु वः ॥१३-४६-९॥
strīpratyayo hi vo dharmo ratibhogāś ca kevalāḥ। paricaryānna-saṃskārās tadāyattā bhavantu vaḥ ॥13-46-9॥
[स्त्रीप्रत्ययः (strīpratyayaḥ) - woman-based; हि (hi) - indeed; वः (vaḥ) - your; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; रतिभोगाः (ratibhogāḥ) - pleasures of love; च (ca) - and; केवलाः (kevalāḥ) - only; परिचर्या (paricaryā) - service; अन्न (anna) - food; संस्काराः (saṃskārāḥ) - purificatory rites; तत् (tat) - that; आयत्ताः (āyattāḥ) - dependent; भवन्तु (bhavantu) - may be; वः (vaḥ) - your;]
(Woman-based indeed your duty, pleasures of love and only; service, food, purificatory rites, that dependent may be your.)
Your duty is indeed based on women, and your pleasures are only those of love; service, food, and purificatory rites may be dependent on that for you. (13-46-9)
उत्पादनमपत्यस्य जातस्य परिपालनम्। प्रीत्यर्थं लोकयात्रा च पश्यत स्त्रीनिबन्धनम् ॥१३-४६-१०॥
utpādanam apatvasya jātasya paripālanam। prītyarthaṃ lokayātrā ca paśyata strīnibandhanam ॥13-46-10॥
[उत्पादनम् (utpādanam) - creation; production; अपत्यस्य (apatyasya) - of offspring; of a child; जातस्य (jātasya) - of the born; of one who is born; परिपालनम् (paripālanam) - protection; maintenance; प्रीत्यर्थं (prītyartham) - for the sake of affection; for the purpose of love; लोकयात्रा (lokayātrā) - worldly conduct; worldly life; च (ca) - and; पश्यत (paśyata) - behold; see; स्त्रीनिबन्धनम् (strīnibandhanam) - bond with women; connection with women;]
(Creation of offspring, protection of the born, for the sake of affection, worldly conduct and, behold, bond with women.)
The creation of children, their protection after birth, affection, and the conduct of worldly life—all these, behold, are bound up with women. (13-46-10)
संमान्यमानाश्चैताभिः सर्वकार्याण्यवाप्स्यथ। विदेहराजदुहिता चात्र श्लोकमगायत ॥१३-४६-११॥
saṁmānyamānāś caitābhiḥ sarvakāryāṇy avāpsyatha। videharājaduhitā cātra ślokam agāyata ॥13-46-11॥
[संमान्यमानाः (saṁmānyamānāḥ) - being honored; च (ca) - and; एताभिः (etābhiḥ) - by these (women); सर्वकार्याणि (sarvakāryāṇi) - all tasks; अवाप्स्यथ (avāpsyatha) - you will accomplish; विदेहराजदुहिता (videharājaduhitā) - the daughter of the king of Videha; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; श्लोकम् (ślokam) - a verse; अगायत (agāyata) - sang;]
(Being honored and by these (women), you will accomplish all tasks. The daughter of the king of Videha also here sang a verse. (13-46-11))

नास्ति यज्ञः स्त्रियः कश्चिन्न श्राद्धं नोपवासकम्। धर्मस्तु भर्तृशुश्रूषा तया स्वर्गं जयत्युत ॥१३-४६-१२॥
nāsti yajñaḥ striyaḥ kaścinna śrāddhaṃ nopavāsakam। dharmastu bhartṛśuśrūṣā tayā svargaṃ jayatyuta ॥13-46-12॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; does not exist; यज्ञः (yajñaḥ) - sacrifice; ritual offering; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - for women; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; anyone; न (na) - not; श्राद्धं (śrāddhaṃ) - śrāddha; ancestral rite; न (na) - not; उपवासकम् (upavāsakam) - fasting; observance of fast; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; righteousness; तु (tu) - but; however; भर्तृशुश्रूषा (bhartṛśuśrūṣā) - service to husband; तया (tayā) - by her; by that woman; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - heaven; जयति (jayati) - conquers; attains; उत (uta) - indeed; certainly;]
(There is no sacrifice for women, nor any śrāddha, nor fasting; but duty is service to the husband; by her, heaven is indeed attained.)
For women, there is no sacrifice, nor any śrāddha or fasting; their duty is service to the husband, and by this, she certainly attains heaven. (13-46-12)
पिता रक्षति कौमारे भर्ता रक्षति यौवने। पुत्रास्तु स्थविरीभावे न स्त्री स्वातन्त्र्यमर्हति ॥१३-४६-१३॥
pitā rakṣati kaumāre bhartā rakṣati yauvane। putrāstu sthavirībhāve na strī svātantryam arhati ॥13-46-13॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects; कौमारे (kaumāre) - in childhood; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects; यौवने (yauvane) - in youth; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तु (tu) - but; स्थविरीभावे (sthavirībhāve) - in old age; न (na) - not; स्त्री (strī) - woman; स्वातन्त्र्यम् (svātantryam) - independence; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
(Father protects in childhood; husband protects in youth; sons but in old age; not woman independence deserves.)
A father protects a woman in childhood, a husband protects her in youth, and sons protect her in old age; a woman does not deserve independence. (13-46-13)
श्रिय एताः स्त्रियो नाम सत्कार्या भूतिमिच्छता। लालिता निगृहीता च स्त्री श्रीर्भवति भारत ॥१३-४६-१४॥
śriya etāḥ striyo nāma satkāryā bhūtimicchatā. lālitā nigṛhītā ca strī śrīrbhavati bhārata ॥13-46-14॥
[श्रिय (śriya) - of fortune; एताः (etāḥ) - these; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; नाम (nāma) - by name; सत्कार्या (satkāryā) - to be honored; भूतिम् (bhūtim) - prosperity; इच्छता (icchatā) - by one desiring; लालिता (lālitā) - cherished; निगृहीता (nigṛhītā) - restrained; च (ca) - and; स्त्री (strī) - woman; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - fortune; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Of fortune these women by name are to be honored by one desiring prosperity. Cherished and restrained woman becomes fortune, O Bhārata.)
These women, called embodiments of fortune, should be honored by one who desires prosperity. A woman who is cherished and restrained becomes the very embodiment of fortune, O Bhārata. (13-46-14)
