दर्शने कीदृशः स्नेहः संवासे च पितामह। महाभाग्यं गवां चैव तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१३-५०-१॥
darśane kīdṛśaḥ snehaḥ saṃvāse ca pitāmaha। mahābhāgyaṃ gavāṃ caiva tanme brūhi pitāmaha ॥13-50-1॥
[दर्शने (darśane) - in seeing; कीदृशः (kīdṛśaḥ) - of what kind; स्नेहः (snehaḥ) - affection; संवासे (saṃvāse) - in living together; च (ca) - and; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire; महाभाग्यं (mahābhāgyaṃ) - great fortune; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(In seeing, of what kind is affection? In living together and, O grandsire, great fortune of cows and indeed that to me tell, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, what kind of affection arises upon seeing and living together? Also, tell me, O grandsire, about the great fortune of cows. (13-50-1)

हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि पुरावृत्तं महाद्युते। नहुषस्य च संवादं महर्षेश्च्यवनस्य च ॥१३-५०-२॥
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi purāvṛttaṃ mahādyute। nahuṣasya ca saṃvādaṃ maharṣeścyavanasya ca ॥13-50-2॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; surely; ते (te) - to you; कथयिष्यामि (kathayiṣyāmi) - I shall tell; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - event; occurrence; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one; नहुषस्य (nahuṣasya) - of Nahuṣa; च (ca) - and; संवादं (saṃvādam) - dialogue; conversation; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; च्यवनस्य (cyavanasya) - of Cyavana; च (ca) - and;]
(Indeed, to you I shall tell the former event, O greatly radiant one; the dialogue of Nahuṣa and of the great sage Cyavana and;)
Indeed, I will tell you the ancient story, O greatly radiant one—the conversation between Nahuṣa and the great sage Cyavana. (13-50-2)
पुरा महर्षिश्च्यवनो भार्गवो भरतर्षभ। उदवासकृतारम्भो बभूव सुमहाव्रतः ॥१३-५०-३॥

(Formerly, the great seer Cyavana, descendant of Bhṛgu, O bull among the Bharatas, became one who undertook the performance of residence, of very great vow. (13-50-3))
Long ago, O best of the Bharatas, the great sage Cyavana, a descendant of Bhṛgu, undertook a great vow and began his residence. (13-50-3)
निहत्य मानं क्रोधं च प्रहर्षं शोकमेव च। वर्षाणि द्वादश मुनिर्जलवासे धृतव्रतः ॥१३-५०-४॥
nihatya mānaṃ krodhaṃ ca praharṣaṃ śokam eva ca। varṣāṇi dvādaśa munir jalavāse dhṛtavrataḥ ॥13-50-4॥
[निहत्य (nihatya) - having destroyed; मानं (mānam) - pride; क्रोधं (krodham) - anger; च (ca) - and; प्रहर्षं (praharṣam) - excessive joy; शोकम् (śokam) - sorrow; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; जलवासे (jalavāse) - in water-dwelling; धृतव्रतः (dhṛtavrataḥ) - firm in vow;]
(Having destroyed pride, anger, and excessive joy, and indeed sorrow, the sage, firm in vow, dwelt in water for twelve years.)
The sage, steadfast in his vow, having overcome pride, anger, excessive joy, and sorrow, lived in water for twelve years. (13-50-4)
आदधत्सर्वभूतेषु विस्रम्भं परमं शुभम्। जलेचरेषु सत्त्वेषु शीतरश्मिरिव प्रभुः ॥१३-५०-५॥
ādadhatsarvabhūteṣu visrambhaṃ paramaṃ śubham। jalecareṣu sattveṣu śītaraśmiriva prabhuḥ ॥13-50-5॥
[आदधत् (ādadhat) - placing; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - in all beings; विस्रम्भं (visrambham) - confidence; परमं (paramam) - supreme; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; जलेचरेषु (jalecareṣu) - among aquatic creatures; सत्त्वेषु (sattveṣu) - among living beings; शीतरश्मिः (śītaraśmiḥ) - the cool-rayed (moon); इव (iva) - like; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Placing in all beings supreme auspicious confidence, among aquatic creatures and living beings, like the cool-rayed (moon), the lord.)
The lord, like the cool-rayed moon, instills supreme and auspicious confidence in all beings, especially among aquatic and living creatures. (13-50-5)
स्थाणुभूतः शुचिर्भूत्वा दैवतेभ्यः प्रणम्य च। गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्ये जलं सम्प्रविवेश ह ॥१३-५०-६॥
sthāṇubhūtaḥ śucirbhūtvā daivatebhyaḥ praṇamya ca। gaṅgāyamunayormadhye jalaṃ sampraviveśa ha ॥13-50-6॥
[स्थाणुभूतः (sthāṇubhūtaḥ) - having become motionless; शुचिः (śuciḥ) - pure; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; दैवतेभ्यः (daivatebhyaḥ) - to the deities; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; च (ca) - and; गङ्गायमुनयोः (gaṅgāyamunayoḥ) - of Gaṅgā and Yamunā; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; जलम् (jalaṃ) - water; सम्प्रविवेश (sampraviveśa) - entered completely; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Having become motionless, having become pure, having bowed to the deities and, in the midst of Gaṅgā and Yamunā, he entered the water indeed. (13-50-6))
Having stood motionless and purified himself, and after bowing to the deities, he entered the water between the Gaṅgā and Yamunā rivers. (13-50-6)
गङ्गायमुनयोर्वेगं सुभीमं भीमनिःस्वनम्। प्रतिजग्राह शिरसा वातवेगसमं जवे ॥१३-५०-७॥
gaṅgā-yamunayor-vegaṃ subhīmaṃ bhīma-niḥsvanam। pratijagrāha śirasā vāta-vega-samaṃ jave ॥13-50-7॥
[गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā river; यमुनयोः (yamunayoh) - of Yamunā (river) and (of) Gaṅgā; (dual genitive) वेगं (vegaṃ) - speed; सुभीमं (subhīmaṃ) - very terrible; भीम (bhīma) - terrible; निःस्वनम् (niḥsvanam) - roaring sound; प्रतिजग्राह (pratijagrāha) - received; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; वात (vāta) - wind; वेग (vega) - speed; समं (samaṃ) - equal; जवे (jave) - in swiftness;]
(The speed of Gaṅgā and Yamunā, very terrible, with a terrible roaring sound, he received with (his) head, equal to the speed of wind in swiftness.)
He received upon his head the very terrible speed and roaring sound of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā, which was as swift as the wind. (13-50-7)
गङ्गा च यमुना चैव सरितश्चानुगास्तयोः। प्रदक्षिणमृषिं चक्रुर्न चैनं पर्यपीडयन् ॥१३-५०-८॥
gaṅgā ca yamunā caiva saritaś cānugās tayoḥ। pradakṣiṇam ṛṣiṃ cakrur na cainaṃ paryapīḍayan ॥13-50-8॥
[गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Ganga; (the river); च (ca) - and; यमुना (yamunā) - Yamuna; (the river); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; च (ca) - and; अनुगाः (anugāḥ) - followers; (those who follow along;) तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; (going around to the right;) ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - the sage; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they did; (they made;) न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; पर्यपीडयन् (paryapīḍayan) - they pressed upon; (they oppressed; they crowded;);]
(Ganga and Yamuna and indeed the rivers and followers of those two performed circumambulation of the sage; and did not press upon him;)
Ganga, Yamuna, and indeed the rivers and their followers circumambulated the sage and did not crowd or oppress him. (13-50-8)
अन्तर्जले स सुष्वाप काष्ठभूतो महामुनिः। ततश्चोर्ध्वस्थितो धीमानभवद्भरतर्षभ ॥१३-५०-९॥
antarjale sa suṣvāpa kāṣṭhabhūto mahāmuniḥ। tataścordhvasthito dhīmānabhavadbharatarṣabha ॥13-50-9॥
[अन्तर्जले (antarjale) - in the water; inside water; स (sa) - he; सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept; lay asleep; काष्ठभूतः (kāṣṭhabhūtaḥ) - having become like wood; turned into wood; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; च (ca) - and; ऊर्ध्वस्थितः (ūrdhvasthitaḥ) - standing upright; risen up; धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise; intelligent; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; भरतरर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(In the water, he slept, having become like wood, the great sage. Then and standing upright, the wise became, O best of the Bharatas (13-50-9))
The great sage, having become like a piece of wood, slept in the water. Then, O best of the Bharatas, the wise one rose up and stood upright. (13-50-9)
जलौकसां स सत्त्वानां बभूव प्रियदर्शनः। उपाजिघ्रन्त च तदा मत्स्यास्तं हृष्टमानसाः ॥ तत्र तस्यासतः कालः समतीतोऽभवन्महान् ॥१३-५०-१०॥
jalaukasāṃ sa sattvānāṃ babhūva priyadarśanaḥ। upājighranta ca tadā matsyāstaṃ hṛṣṭamānasāḥ ॥ tatra tasyāsataḥ kālaḥ samatīto'bhavanmahān ॥13-50-10॥
[जलौकसां (jalaukasām) - of the water-dwellers; स (sa) - he; सत्त्वानां (sattvānām) - of beings; बभूव (babhūva) - became; प्रियदर्शनः (priyadarśanaḥ) - pleasing to look at; उपाजिघ्रन्त (upājighranta) - approached and sniffed; च (ca) - and; तदा (tadā) - then; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - fishes; तम् (tam) - him; हृष्टमानसाः (hṛṣṭamānasāḥ) - with delighted minds; तत्र (tatra) - there; तस्य (tasya) - his; असतः (asataḥ) - while staying; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; समतीतः (samatītaḥ) - completely passed; अभवन् (abhavan) - became; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Of the water-dwellers, he became pleasing to look at among beings; and then the fishes with delighted minds approached and sniffed him. There, while he was staying, a great time completely passed.)

ततः कदाचित्समये कस्मिंश्चिन्मत्स्यजीविनः। तं देशं समुपाजग्मुर्जालहस्ता महाद्युते ॥१३-५०-११॥
tataḥ kadācitsamaye kasmiṃścinmatsyajīvinaḥ। taṃ deśaṃ samupājagmurjālahastā mahādyute ॥13-50-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at some time; once; समये (samaye) - at the time; at the occasion; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - in some; in a certain; मत्स्यजीविनः (matsyajīvinaḥ) - fishers; those living by fish; तं (taṃ) - that; देशं (deśaṃ) - region; place; समुपाजग्मुः (samupājagmuḥ) - approached together; came near; जालहस्ताः (jālahastāḥ) - net-handed; holding nets; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - of great splendor; very brilliant;]
(Then, at some time, at the occasion, in a certain (place), fishers; that region approached together, net-handed, of great splendor.)
Then, once at a certain time, some fishermen, holding nets and of great splendor, came together to that region. (13-50-11)
निषादा बहवस्तत्र मत्स्योद्धरणनिश्चिताः। व्यायता बलिनः शूराः सलिलेष्वनिवर्तिनः ॥ अभ्याययुश्च तं देशं निश्चिता जालकर्मणि ॥१३-५०-१२॥
niṣādā bahavas tatra matsyoddharaṇaniścitāḥ। vyāyatā balinaḥ śūrāḥ salileṣvanivartinaḥ॥ abhyāyayuś ca taṃ deśaṃ niścitā jālakarmaṇi॥13-50-12॥
[निषादाः (niṣādāḥ) - Nishadas; (a tribe of fishermen); बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; तत्र (tatra) - there; मत्स्य (matsya) - fish; उद्धरण (uddharaṇa) - lifting; निश्चिताः (niścitāḥ) - determined; व्यायताः (vyāyatāḥ) - well-built; बलिनः (balinaḥ) - strong; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - brave; सलिलेषु (salileṣu) - in waters; अनिवर्तिनः (anivartinaḥ) - not turning back; अभ्याययुः (abhyāyayuḥ) - approached; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; देशम् (deśam) - region; निश्चिताः (niścitāḥ) - determined; जालकर्मणि (jālakarmaṇi) - in net-work;]
(Nishadas many there fish lifting determined; well-built strong brave in waters not turning back; approached and that region determined in net-work;)
Many Nishadas, determined to lift fish, well-built, strong, and brave, who do not turn back in the waters, approached that region, resolved in the work of netting. (13-50-12)
जालं च योजयामासुर्विशेषेण जनाधिप। मत्स्योदकं समासाद्य तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१३-५०-१३॥
jālaṃ ca yojayāmāsurviśeṣeṇa janādhipa। matsyodakaṃ samāsādya tadā bharatasattama ॥13-50-13॥
[जालं (jālam) - net; च (ca) - and; योजयामासुः (yojayāmāsuḥ) - they joined; they set; they cast; विशेषेण (viśeṣeṇa) - especially; with distinction; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O ruler of people; O king; मत्स्य (matsya) - fish; उदकं (udakam) - water; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; having reached; तदा (tadā) - then; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Net and they cast especially O ruler of people; fish water having approached then O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, O ruler of people, they especially cast the net, having reached the water where the fish were, at that time. (13-50-13)
ततस्ते बहुभिर्योगैः कैवर्ता मत्स्यकाङ्क्षिणः। गङ्गायमुनयोर्वारि जालैरभ्यकिरंस्ततः ॥१३-५०-१४॥
tataste bahubhiryogaiḥ kaivartā matsyakāṅkṣiṇaḥ। gaṅgāyamunayorvāri jālairabhyakiraṃstataḥ ॥13-50-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; योगैः (yogaiḥ) - means; कैवर्ताः (kaivartāḥ) - fishermen; मत्स्यकाङ्क्षिणः (matsyakāṅkṣiṇaḥ) - desiring fish; गङ्गायमुनयोः (gaṅgāyamunayoh) - of Gaṅgā and Yamunā; वारि (vāri) - water; जालैः (jālaiḥ) - with nets; अभ्यकिरन् (abhyakiran) - covered over; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Then they with many means, the fishermen desiring fish, the water of Gaṅgā and Yamunā with nets covered over then.)
Then the fishermen, eager for fish, used many methods and covered the waters of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā with their nets. (13-50-14)
जालं सुविततं तेषां नवसूत्रकृतं तथा। विस्तारायामसम्पन्नं यत्तत्र सलिले क्षमम् ॥१३-५०-१५॥
jālaṃ suvitataṃ teṣāṃ navasūtrakṛtaṃ tathā। vistārāyāmasampannaṃ yattatra salile kṣamam ॥13-50-15॥
[जालं (jālam) - net; सुविततं (suvitataṃ) - well-spread; तेषां (teṣām) - of them; नवसूत्रकृतं (navasūtrakṛtaṃ) - made with new threads; तथा (tathā) - likewise; विस्तारायामसम्पन्नं (vistārāyāmasampannaṃ) - endowed with width and length; यत् (yat) - which; तत्र (tatra) - there; सलिले (salile) - in water; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - suitable;]
(Net well-spread of them made with new threads likewise endowed with width and length which there in water suitable.)
Their net, well-spread and made with new threads, likewise endowed with width and length, which was suitable there in the water. (13-50-15)
ततस्ते सुमहच्चैव बलवच्च सुवर्तितम्। प्रकीर्य सर्वतः सर्वे जालं चकृषिरे तदा ॥१३-५०-१६॥
tataste sumahaccaiva balavacca suvartitam। prakīrya sarvataḥ sarve jālaṃ cakṛṣire tadā ॥13-50-16॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; ते (te) - they; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; बलवत् (balavat) - strong; च (ca) - and; सुवर्तितम् (suvartitam) - well-arranged; प्रकीर्य (prakīrya) - having spread; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - on all sides; सर्वे (sarve) - all; जालम् (jālam) - net; चकृषिरे (cakṛṣire) - they drew; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Then they, having spread the very great and indeed strong and well-arranged net on all sides, all drew (it) then.)
Then, all of them spread out the very great, strong, and well-arranged net on all sides and drew it in. (13-50-16)
अभीतरूपाः संहृष्टास्तेऽन्योन्यवशवर्तिनः। बबन्धुस्तत्र मत्स्यांश्च तथान्याञ्जलचारिणः ॥१३-५०-१७॥
abhītarūpāḥ saṁhṛṣṭās te'nyonyavaśavartinaḥ। babandhus tatra matsyāṁś ca tathā'nyāñ jalacāriṇaḥ ॥13-50-17॥
[अभीतरूपाः (abhītarūpāḥ) - having fearful forms; संहृष्टाः (saṁhṛṣṭāḥ) - delighted; ते (te) - they; अन्योन्यवशवर्तिनः (anyonyavaśavartinaḥ) - subject to each other's control; बबन्धुः (babandhuḥ) - bound; तत्र (tatra) - there; मत्स्यान् (matsyān) - fishes; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; जलचारिणः (jalacāriṇaḥ) - water-dwellers;]
(Having fearful forms, delighted, they, subject to each other's control, bound there the fishes and also other water-dwellers.)
Those with fearful forms, delighted and acting under each other's control, there bound the fishes and other aquatic creatures. (13-50-17)
तथा मत्स्यैः परिवृतं च्यवनं भृगुनन्दनम्। आकर्षन्त महाराज जालेनाथ यदृच्छया ॥१३-५०-१८॥
tathā matsyaiḥ parivṛtaṃ cyavanaṃ bhṛgunandanam। ākarṣanta mahārāja jālenātha yadṛcchayā ॥13-50-18॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; मत्य्सैः (matsyaiḥ) - by fishes; परिवृतं (parivṛtam) - surrounded; च्यवनं (cyavanam) - Cyavana; भृगुनन्दनम् (bhṛgunandanam) - descendant of Bhṛgu; आकर्षन्त (ākarṣanta) - were dragging; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; जालेन (jālena) - with a net; अथ (atha) - then; यदृच्छया (yadṛcchayā) - by chance;]
(Thus, by fishes, surrounded, Cyavana, descendant of Bhṛgu, were dragging, O great king, with a net, then, by chance.)
Thus, O great king, the descendant of Bhṛgu, Cyavana, who was surrounded by fishes, was being dragged by chance with a net. (13-50-18)
नदीशैवलदिग्धाङ्गं हरिश्मश्रुजटाधरम्। लग्नैः शङ्खगणैर्गात्रैः कोष्ठैश्चित्रैरिवावृतम् ॥१३-५०-१९॥
nadīśaivaladigdhāṅgaṃ hariśmaśrujaṭādharam। lagnaiḥ śaṅkhagaṇairgātraiḥ koṣṭhaiścitrairivāvṛtam ॥13-50-19॥
[नदी-शैवल-दिग्ध-अङ्गम् (nadī-śaivala-digdha-aṅgam) - river-algae-smeared-body; हरि-श्मश्रु-जटा-अधरम् (hari-śmaśru-jaṭā-adharam) - green-moss-beard-matted-hair-bearing; लग्नैः (lagnaiḥ) - attached-with; शङ्ख-गणैः (śaṅkha-gaṇaiḥ) - conch-shell-groups; गात्रैः (gātraiḥ) - on-the-limbs; कोष्ठैः (koṣṭhaiḥ) - with-cavities; चित्रैः (citraiḥ) - variegated; इव (iva) - as-if; आवृतम् (āvṛtam) - covered;]

तं जालेनोद्धृतं दृष्ट्वा ते तदा वेदपारगम्। सर्वे प्राञ्जलयो दाशाः शिरोभिः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥१३-५०-२०॥

(Him with the net lifted up having seen, they then, the one who has mastered the Vedas, all with joined palms, the servants, with (their) heads, fell on the ground.)
Seeing him, the master of the Vedas, lifted up in the net, all the servants, with joined palms, fell to the ground with their heads. (13-50-20)
परिखेदपरित्रासाज्जालस्याकर्षणेन च। मत्स्या बभूवुर्व्यापन्नाः स्थलसङ्कर्षणेन च ॥१३-५०-२१॥
parikhedaparitrāsāj jālasya ākarṣaṇena ca। matsyā babhūvur vyāpannāḥ sthala-saṅkarṣaṇena ca ॥13-50-21॥
[परिखेद (parikheda) - from distress; परित्रासात् (paritrāsāt) - from fear; जालस्य (jālasya) - of the net; आकर्षणेन (ākarṣaṇena) - by the drawing; च (ca) - and; मत्स्याः (matsyāḥ) - the fishes; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; व्यापन्नाः (vyāpannāḥ) - destroyed; स्थल (sthala) - to the land; सङ्कर्षणेन (saṅkarṣaṇena) - by the dragging; च (ca) - and;]
(From distress, from fear, by the drawing of the net and by the dragging to the land, the fishes became destroyed;)
Due to distress and fear, as the net was drawn and dragged to the land, the fishes were destroyed. (13-50-21)
स मुनिस्तत्तदा दृष्ट्वा मत्स्यानां कदनं कृतम्। बभूव कृपयाविष्टो निःश्वसंश्च पुनः पुनः ॥१३-५०-२२॥
sa munis tat tadā dṛṣṭvā matsyānāṃ kadanaṃ kṛtam। babhūva kṛpayāviṣṭo niḥśvasaṃś ca punaḥ punaḥ ॥13-50-22॥
[स (sa) - he; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; तत् (tat) - that; तदा (tadā) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; मत्स्यानाम् (matsyānām) - of the fishes; कदनम् (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; बभूव (babhūva) - became; कृपया (kṛpayā) - with compassion; आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - overcome; निःश्वसन् (niḥśvasan) - sighing; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(He sage that then having seen of the fishes slaughter done became with compassion overcome sighing and again again.)
The sage, having then seen the slaughter of the fishes, became overcome with compassion, sighing again and again. (13-50-22)
निषादा ऊचुः॥
niṣādā ūcuḥ॥
[निषादा (niṣādā) - Nishadas; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said;]
(Nishadas said;)
The Nishadas said.
अज्ञानाद्यत्कृतं पापं प्रसादं तत्र नः कुरु। करवाम प्रियं किं ते तन्नो ब्रूहि महामुने ॥१३-५०-२३॥
ajñānādyatkṛtaṃ pāpaṃ prasādaṃ tatra naḥ kuru। karavāma priyaṃ kiṃ te tanno brūhi mahāmune ॥13-50-23॥
[अज्ञानात् (ajñānāt) - from ignorance; यत् (yat) - which; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; पापं (pāpaṃ) - sin; प्रसादं (prasādaṃ) - grace; तत्र (tatra) - there; नः (naḥ) - for us; कुरु (kuru) - do; करवाम (karavāma) - let us do; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; किं (kiṃ) - what; ते (te) - for you; तत् (tat) - that; नः (naḥ) - to us; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage;]
(From ignorance, which done sin, grace there for us do. Let us do dear what for you, that to us tell, O great sage. (13-50-23))
O great sage, whatever sin has been committed by us out of ignorance, please bestow your grace there. Tell us what is dear to you, so that we may do that. (13-50-23)

Bhīṣma said.
इत्युक्तो मत्स्यमध्यस्थश्च्यवनो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। यो मेऽद्य परमः कामस्तं शृणुध्वं समाहिताः ॥१३-५०-२४॥
ityukto matsyamadhyasthaś cyavano vākyam abravīt। yo me'dya paramaḥ kāmas taṃ śṛṇudhvaṃ samāhitāḥ ॥13-50-24॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; मत्स्य (matsya) - fish; मध्यस्थः (madhyasthaḥ) - situated in the midst; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; यः (yaḥ) - who; मे (me) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; तम् (tam) - that; शृणुध्वम् (śṛṇudhvam) - hear; समाहिताः (samāhitāḥ) - attentive;]
(Thus addressed, Cyavana, situated in the midst of the fish, spoke speech. Who my today supreme desire, that hear, attentive.)
Thus addressed, Cyavana, who was in the midst of the fish, spoke these words: "Hear attentively my supreme desire of today." (13-50-24)
प्राणोत्सर्गं विक्रयं वा मत्स्यैर्यास्याम्यहं सह। संवासान्नोत्सहे त्यक्तुं सलिलाध्युषितानिमान् ॥१३-५०-२५॥
prāṇotsargaṃ vikrayaṃ vā matsyairyāsyāmyahaṃ saha। saṃvāsānnotsahe tyaktuṃ salilādhyuṣitānimān ॥13-50-25॥
[प्राणोत्सर्गं (prāṇotsargam) - abandonment of life; विक्रयं (vikrayam) - sale; वा (vā) - or; मत्स्यैः (matsyaiḥ) - with fishes; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I will go; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सह (saha) - together; संवासात् (saṃvāsāt) - from cohabitation; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; त्यक्तुं (tyaktum) - to abandon; सलिल (salila) - water; अध्यु्षितान् (adhyuṣitān) - dwelling in; इमान् (imān) - these;]
(Abandonment of life, sale, or, with fishes, I will go, I, together; from cohabitation, not, am able, to abandon, water, dwelling in, these.)
I am unable to abandon these who dwell in water, with whom I have lived together; I will go with the fishes, whether it be to death or to be sold. (13-50-25)
इत्युक्तास्ते निषादास्तु सुभृशं भयकम्पिताः। सर्वे विषण्णवदना नहुषाय न्यवेदयन् ॥१३-५०-२६॥
ityuktās te niṣādās tu subhṛśaṃ bhayakampitāḥ। sarve viṣaṇṇavadanā nahuṣāya nyavedayan ॥13-50-26॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - having been spoken; ते (te) - they; निषादाः (niṣādāḥ) - Nishadas; तु (tu) - but; सुभृशं (subhṛśam) - exceedingly; भयकम्पिताः (bhayakampitāḥ) - trembling with fear; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विषण्णवदना (viṣaṇṇavadanā) - with dejected faces; नहुषाय (nahuṣāya) - to Nahusha; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - reported;]
(Thus having been spoken, they, the Nishadas, but exceedingly trembling with fear, all with dejected faces, to Nahusha reported.)
When these words were spoken, the Nishadas, greatly trembling with fear and all with dejected faces, reported everything to Nahusha. (13-50-26)
