cyavana uvāca॥
Cyavana said.
varaś ca gṛhyatāṃ matto yaś ca te saṃśayo hṛdi। taṃ ca brūhi naraśreṣṭha sarvaṃ sampādayāmi te ॥13-55-1॥
Accept a boon from me, O best of men, and tell me whatever doubt is in your heart; I will accomplish everything for you. (13-55-1)
kuśika uvāca॥
Kushika said.
yadi prīto'si bhagavaṃs tato me vada bhārgava। kāraṇaṃ śrotum icchāmi mad-gṛhe vāsa-kāritam ॥13-55-2॥
If you are pleased, O revered one, then tell me, O Bhārgava. I wish to hear the reason for making you stay in my house. (13-55-2)
śayanaṃ caika-pārśvena divasān ekaviṃśatim | akiñcid uktvā gamanaṃ bahiś ca muni-puṅgava ॥13-55-3॥
O foremost sage, lying on one side for twenty-one days, and without saying anything, going outside.
antardhānam akasmāc ca punar eva ca darśanam। punaś ca śayanaṃ vipra divasān ekaviṃśatim ॥13-55-4॥
Disappearance occurred suddenly, and again there was an appearance. Again, O Brāhmaṇa, there was lying down for twenty-one days. (13-55-4)
tailābhyaktasya gamanaṁ bhojanaṁ ca gṛhe mama। samupānīya vividhaṁ yaddagdhaṁ jātavedasā ॥ niryāṇaṁ ca rathenāśu sahasā yatkṛtaṁ tvayā ॥13-55-5॥
The going and eating in my house by the one anointed with oil, the various things you brought together and which were burnt by fire, and also the swift, sudden departure by chariot which was done by you. (13-55-5)
dhanānāṃ ca visargasya vanasyāpi ca darśanam। prāsādānāṃ bahūnāṃ ca kāñcanānāṃ mahāmune॥ 13-55-6॥
O great sage, the sight of riches and their distribution, as well as of the forest, and of many golden palaces. (13-55-6)
maṇividrumapādānāṃ paryaṅkānāṃ ca darśanam। punaś cādarśanaṃ tasya śrotum icchāmi kāraṇam ॥13-55-7॥
I wish to hear the cause of the appearance and then disappearance of those couches with legs of jewels and coral. (13-55-7)
atīva hyatra muhyāmi cintayāno divāniśam. na caivātrādhigacchāmi sarvasyāsya viniścayam ॥ etadicchāmi kārtsnyena satyaṁ śrotuṁ tapodhana ॥13-55-8॥
Indeed, here I am greatly bewildered, constantly thinking day and night; and I am unable to arrive at any definite conclusion about all this. I therefore wish to hear the complete and true answer to this from you, O ascetic. (13-55-8)
cyavana uvāca॥
Cyavana said.
śṛṇu sarvamaśeṣeṇa yadidaṃ yena hetunā। na hi śakyamanākhyātumevaṃ pṛṣṭena pārthiva ॥13-55-9॥
O king, listen to everything completely: that which is here and the reason for it. Indeed, upon being asked thus, it is not possible not to narrate it. (13-55-9)
pitāmahasya vadataḥ purā deva-samāgame। śrutavānasmi yad rājan tan me nigadataḥ śṛṇu॥13-55-10॥
O king, what I heard long ago from the grandsire when he was speaking in the assembly of the gods, hear that from me now. (13-55-10)
brahma-kṣatra-virodhena bhavitā kula-saṅkaraḥ। pautras te bhavitā rājan tejo-vīrya-samanvitaḥ॥13-55-11॥
Because of conflict between the brahma and kṣatra classes, there will be a mixture of lineages. O King, your grandson will be born endowed with energy and valor. (13-55-11)
tataḥ svakula-rakṣārtham ahaṃ tvā samupāgamam। cikīrṣan kuśika-ucchēdaṃ sandidhakṣuḥ kulaṃ tava ॥13-55-12॥
Therefore, for the sake of protecting my lineage, I approached you, wishing to bring about the destruction of the Kuśika and intending (to harm) your family. (13-55-12)
tato'hamāgamya purā tvāmavocaṃ mahīpate. niyamaṃ kañcidārapsye śuśrūṣā kriyatāmiti ॥13-55-13॥
Then, having come before, I said to you, O king: 'I will undertake a certain discipline; let service be performed.' (13-55-13)
na ca te duṣkṛtaṃ kiñcid aham āsādayaṃ gṛhe। tena jīvasi rājarṣe na bhavethās tato'nyathā ॥13-55-14॥
And I have not found any evil deed in your house; therefore, O royal sage, you live—otherwise, it would not have been so. (13-55-14)
etāṃ buddhiṃ samāsthāya divasānekaviṃśatim। supto'smi yadi māṃ kaścidbodhayediti pārthiva ॥13-55-15॥
O king, having held this thought, I will sleep for twenty-one days; if someone awakens me, let them do so in this way. (13-55-15)
yadā tvayā sabhāryeṇa saṁsupto na prabodhitaḥ। ahaṁ tadaiva te prīto manasā rājasattama ॥13-55-16॥
O best among kings, when you, sleeping with your wife, did not awaken me, I was pleased with you in my heart at that very moment. (13-55-16)
utthāya cāsmi niṣkrānto yadi māṁ tvaṁ mahīpate. pṛccheḥ kva yāsyasītyevaṁ śapeyaṁ tvāmiti prabho ॥13-55-17॥
O king, having arisen, if when I am departed, you should ask me, "Where will you go?"—in this way, O lord, I would declare an oath to you. (13-55-17)
antarhitaś cāsmi punaḥ punar eva ca te gṛhe। yogam āsthāya saṁviṣṭo divasānekaviṁśatim ॥13-55-18॥
I have repeatedly disappeared in your house; having assumed yogic power, I remained for twenty-one days. (13-55-18)
kṣudhito māmasūyethāḥ śramādveti narādhipa। etāṃ buddhiṃ samāsthāya karṣitau vāṃ mayā kṣudhā ॥13-55-19॥
O lord of men, thinking that 'hungry, you should blame me due to fatigue,' adopt this thought: you two were emaciated by me out of hunger. (13-55-19)
na ca te'bhūt susūkṣmaḥ api manyuḥ manasi pārthiva | sabhāryasya naraśreṣṭha tena te prītimān aham ॥13-55-20॥
O king, not even the subtlest anger was present in your mind. O best of men, as you were with your wife, by that, I am pleased with you. (13-55-20)
bhojanaṃ ca samānāyya yattadādīpitaṃ mayā | krudhyeṭhā yadi mātsaryāditi tanmarṣitaṃ ca te ॥13-55-21॥
And as for the food—having equally distributed it—which I had incited, if you became angry out of jealousy for that, it was forgiven by you. (13-55-21)
tato'haṃ ratham āruhya tvām avocaṃ narādhipa। sa-bhāryaḥ mām vahasva iti tac ca tvaṃ kṛtavāṃs tathā ॥13-55-22॥
Then, having mounted the chariot, I said to you, O ruler of men: "Carry me together with my wife." And you did just that. (13-55-22)
aviśaṅko narapate prīto'haṃ cāpi tena te. dhanotsarge'pi ca kṛte na tvāṃ krodhaḥ pradharṣayat ॥13-55-23॥
O king, I am without suspicion and well pleased with you, and indeed, even when your wealth was surrendered, anger did not overcome you. (13-55-23)
tataḥ prītena te rājan punaretat kṛtaṃ tava. sabhāryasya vanaṃ bhūyas tad viddhi manujādhipa ॥13-55-24॥
Then, O king, this has again been done for you by the pleased one; know that, O lord of men, you (are to go) with your wife to the forest again. (13-55-24)
prītyarthaṃ tava caitanme svargasaṃdarśanaṃ kṛtam। yatte vane'sminnṛpate dṛṣṭaṃ divyaṃ nidarśanam ॥13-55-25॥
O king, this vision of heaven was shown by me for your pleasure and for your sake. That divine manifestation which you saw in this forest (13-55-25).
svargoddeśastvayā rājansaśarīreṇa pārthiva। muhūrtamanubhūto'sau sabhāryeṇa nṛpottama ॥13-55-26॥
O best of kings, by you, the king, going to heaven with (your) body together with (your) wife was experienced for a moment. (13-55-26)
nidarśanārthaṁ tapaso dharmasya ca narādhipa. tatra yāsītspr̥hā rājan taccāpi viditaṁ mama ॥13-55-27॥
O king, for the sake of exemplifying austerity and dharma, whatever desire existed there, that too is known to me. (13-55-27)
brāhmaṇyaṃ kāṅkṣase hi tvaṃ tapaś ca pṛthivīpate। avamanya narendratvaṃ devendratvaṃ ca pārthiva ॥13-55-28॥
You truly desire Brahminhood and austerity, O lord of the earth, disregarding kingship and even the Indraship, O king. (13-55-28)
evam etad yathāttha tvaṃ brāhmaṇyaṃ tāta durlabham। brāhmaṇye sati carṣitvam ṛṣitve ca tapasvitā ॥13-55-29॥
Yes, it is just as you have said, dear one; brahminhood is difficult to attain. When brahminhood is present, then follow the qualities of a seer and asceticism. (13-55-29)
bhaviṣyatyeṣa te kāmaḥ kuśikātkauśiko dvijaḥ। tṛtīyaṃ puruṣaṃ prāpya brāhmaṇatvaṃ gamiṣyati॥13-55-30॥
This wish of yours will be fulfilled; the twice-born descendant of Kuśika, attaining the third generation, will achieve Brahminhood. (13-55-30)
vaṃśas te pārthiva-śreṣṭha bhṛgūṇām eva tejasā। pautras te bhavitā vipra tapasvī pāvaka-dyutiḥ ॥13-55-31॥
O best of kings, your lineage will be enhanced by the splendor of the Bhṛgus. Your grandson will be a brāhmaṇa, an ascetic, possessing the radiance of fire. (13-55-31)
yaḥ sa devamanuṣyāṇāṃ bhayam utpādayiṣyati. trayāṇāṃ caiva lokānāṃ satyam etad bravīmi te ॥13-55-32॥
He who will cause fear among gods and humans, and indeed among all three worlds—this is truth, I declare this to you. (13-55-32)
varaṃ gṛhāṇa rājarṣe yaste manasi vartate। tīrthayātrāṃ gamiṣyāmi purā kālo'tivartate ॥13-55-33॥
O royal sage, accept a boon which is present in your mind. I shall soon depart on pilgrimage, for time is passing. (13-55-33)
kuśika uvāca॥
Kuśika said.
eṣa eva varo me'dya yat tvaṃ prīto mahāmune। bhavatv etad yathāttha tvaṃ tapaḥ pautre mama anagha॥ brāhmaṇyaṃ me kulasyāstu bhagavan eṣa me varaḥ॥13-55-34॥
This is, indeed, my boon today—that you are pleased, O great sage. Let what you have said be fulfilled: let austerity be present in my grandson, O sinless one. Let Brahminhood exist for my family, O revered one; this is my boon. (13-55-34)
punaś cākhātuṁ icchāmi bhagavan vistareṇa vai। katham eṣyati vipratvaṁ kulaṁ me bhṛgunandana ॥ kaś ca asau bhavitā bandhur mama kaḥ ca api saṁmataḥ ॥13-55-35॥
O lord, I wish to be told again, in detail indeed: how will my family attain brāhmaṇa-hood, O descendant of Bhṛgu? Who will be that relative of mine, who also will be regarded as approved? (13-55-35)
