अवश्यं कथनीयं मे तवैतन्नरपुङ्गव। यदर्थं त्वाहमुच्छेत्तुं सम्प्राप्तो मनुजाधिप ॥१३-५६-१॥
avaśyaṁ kathanīyaṁ me tavaitan narapuṅgava। yadarthaṁ tvāham ucchettum samprāpto manujādhipa ॥13-56-1॥
[अवश्यं (avaśyam) - certainly; कथनीयं (kathanīyam) - must be told; मे (me) - by me; तव (tava) - to you; एतत् (etat) - this; नरपुङ्गव (narapuṅgava) - O best among men; यदर्थं (yadartham) - for which purpose; त्वा (tvā) - you; अहम् (aham) - I; उच्छेत्तुम् (ucchettum) - to destroy; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - have come; मनुजाधिप (manujādhipa) - O king of men;]
(Certainly must be told by me to you this, O best among men. For which purpose you I to destroy have come, O king of men.)
O best among men, this must certainly be told by me to you. O king of men, for which purpose I have come to destroy you. (13-56-1)
भृगूणां क्षत्रिया याज्या नित्यमेव जनाधिप। ते च भेदं गमिष्यन्ति दैवयुक्तेन हेतुना ॥१३-५६-२॥
bhṛgūṇāṃ kṣatriyā yājyā nityam eva janādhipa। te ca bhedaṃ gamiṣyanti daivayuktena hetunā॥13-56-2॥
[भृगूणां (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; क्षत्रिया (kṣatriyāḥ) - the kṣatriyas; याज्या (yājyāḥ) - to be sacrificed (to); नित्यम् (nityam) - always; एव (eva) - indeed; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of people; ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; भेदम् (bhedam) - division; गमिष्यन्ति (gamiṣyanti) - will go to; दैवयुक्तेन (daiva-yuktena) - by that which is joined with fate; हेतुना (hetunā) - by the cause;]
(Of the Bhṛgus, the kṣatriyas are to be sacrificed to, always indeed, O lord of people. They also to division will go, by the cause joined with fate.)
O lord of people, the Kṣatriyas are always to be sacrificed to by the Bhṛgus. They too will be divided by a cause appointed by fate. (13-56-2)
क्षत्रियाश्च भृगून्सर्वान्वधिष्यन्ति नराधिप। आ गर्भादनुकृन्तन्तो दैवदण्डनिपीडिताः ॥१३-५६-३॥
kṣatriyāś ca bhṛgūn sarvān vadhiṣyanti narādhipa। ā garbhād anukṛntanto daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ॥13-56-3॥
[क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - kṣatriyas; warriors; च (ca) - and; भृगून् (bhṛgūn) - the Bhṛgus; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; वधिष्यन्ति (vadhiṣyanti) - will slay; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O ruler of men; आ (ā) - from; गर्भात् (garbhāt) - the womb; अनुकृन्तन्तः (anukṛntantaḥ) - cutting down; दैवदण्डनिपीडिताः (daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ) - oppressed by divine punishment;]
(Kṣatriyas and the Bhṛgus all will slay, O ruler of men; from the womb, cutting down, oppressed by divine punishment.)
O ruler of men, the kṣatriyas, oppressed by divine punishment, will slay all the Bhṛgus, cutting them down even from the womb. (13-56-3)
तत उत्पत्स्यतेऽस्माकं कुले गोत्रविवर्धनः। और्वो नाम महातेजा ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः ॥१३-५६-४॥
tat utpatsyate'smākaṃ kule gotravivardhanaḥ। aurvo nāma mahātejā jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ ॥13-56-4॥
[तत् (tat) - that; उत्पत्स्यते (utpatsyate) - will be born; अस्माकं (asmākaṃ) - of us; कुले (kule) - in the lineage; गोत्रविवर्धनः (gotravivardhanaḥ) - one who increases the family; और्वः (aurvaḥ) - Aurva; नाम (nāma) - named; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - possessed of great brilliance; ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः (jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ) - having radiance like fire and the sun;]
(That will be born of us in the lineage, one who increases the family; Aurva named, possessed of great brilliance, having radiance like fire and the sun.)
In our lineage, one named Aurva will be born who will increase the family; he will possess great brilliance and will have radiance like fire and the sun. (13-56-4)
स त्रैलोक्यविनाशाय कोपाग्निं जनयिष्यति। महीं सपर्वतवनां यः करिष्यति भस्मसात् ॥१३-५६-५॥
sa trailokyavināśāya kopāgniṃ janayiṣyati। mahīṃ saparvatavanāṃ yaḥ kariṣyati bhasmasāt॥13-56-5॥
[स (sa) - he; त्रैलोक्यविनाशाय (trailokyavināśāya) - for the destruction of the three worlds; कोपाग्निं (kopāgniṃ) - the fire of anger; जनयिष्यति (janayiṣyati) - will generate; महीं (mahīṃ) - the earth; सपर्वतवनां (saparvatavanāṃ) - with mountains and forests; यः (yaḥ) - who; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will make; भस्मसात् (bhasmasāt) - into ashes;]
(He for the destruction of the three worlds will generate the fire of anger. The earth with mountains and forests who will make into ashes.)
He, for the destruction of the three worlds, will generate the fire of anger; he will turn the earth, with its mountains and forests, into ashes. (13-56-5)
कञ्चित्कालं तु तं वह्निं स एव शमयिष्यति। समुद्रे वडवावक्त्रे प्रक्षिप्य मुनिसत्तमः ॥१३-५६-६॥
kañcitkālaṁ tu taṁ vahniṁ sa eva śamayiṣyati। samudre vaḍavāvaktre prakṣipya munisattamaḥ॥13-56-6॥
[कञ्चित्कालं (kañcitkālam) - for some time; तु (tu) - but; तं (tam) - that; वह्निं (vahnim) - fire; स (sa) - he; एव (eva) - indeed; शमयिष्यति (śamayiṣyati) - will appease; समुद्रे (samudre) - in the ocean; वडवावक्त्रे (vaḍavāvaktre) - in the mouth of Vaḍavā (submarine fire-mare); प्रक्षिप्य (prakṣipya) - having cast; मुनिसत्तमः (munisattamaḥ) - the best among sages;]
(For some time, but that fire he indeed will appease. In the ocean, into the mouth of Vaḍavā, having cast, the best among sages.)
However, for some time, he himself will appease that fire by casting it into the mouth of the Vaḍavā in the ocean, O best among sages. (13-56-6)
पुत्रं तस्य महाभागमृचीकं भृगुनन्दनम्। साक्षात्कृत्स्नो धनुर्वेदः समुपस्थास्यतेऽनघ ॥१३-५६-७॥
putraṃ tasya mahābhāgam ṛcīkaṃ bhṛgunandanam। sākṣātkṛtsno dhanurvedaḥ samupasthāsyate'nagha ॥13-56-7॥
[पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; महाभागम् (mahābhāgam) - exceedingly fortunate; ऋचीकं (ṛcīkam) - Ṛcīka; (proper noun); भृगुनन्दनम् (bhṛgunandanam) - descendant of Bhṛgu; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; in person; कृत्स्नः (kṛtsnaḥ) - entire; whole; धनुर्वेदः (dhanurvedaḥ) - the science of archery; समुपस्थास्यते (samupasthāsyate) - will be present to; will appear before; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(The exceedingly fortunate son of him, Ṛcīka, descendant of Bhṛgu, directly the whole Dhanurveda will appear before (him), O sinless one.)
O sinless one, the exceedingly fortunate son of his, Ṛcīka, the descendant of Bhṛgu, the entire science of archery will directly manifest before him. (13-56-7)
क्षत्रियाणामभावाय दैवयुक्तेन हेतुना। स तु तं प्रतिगृह्यैव पुत्रे सङ्क्रामयिष्यति ॥१३-५६-८॥
kṣatriyāṇām abhāvāya daiva-yuktena hetunā। sa tu taṃ pratigṛhyaiva putre saṅkrāmayiṣyati ॥13-56-8॥
[क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; अभावाय (abhāvāya) - for destruction; दैवयुक्तेन (daiva-yuktena) - joined with destiny; हेतुना (hetunā) - with a cause; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; तम् (tam) - that; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; एव (eva) - indeed; पुत्रे (putre) - to (his) son; सङ्क्रामयिष्यति (saṅkrāmayiṣyati) - will transfer;]
(For the destruction of the kṣatriyas, with a cause joined with destiny, he but having accepted that indeed, will transfer to (his) son.)
But for the destruction of the kṣatriyas, by a cause joined with destiny, he, having accepted that, will indeed transfer it to his son. (13-56-8)
जमदग্নौ महाभागे तपसा भावितात्मनि। स चापि भृगुशार्दूलस्तं वेदं धारयिष्यति ॥१३-५६-९॥
jamadaghnau mahābhāge tapasā bhāvitātmani। sa cāpi bhṛguśārdūlas taṃ vedaṃ dhārayiṣyati॥13-56-9॥
[जमदग्नौ (jamadaghnau) - in Jamadagni; महाभागे (mahābhāge) - greatly fortunate; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; भावितात्मनि (bhāvitātmani) - in purified self; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भृगुशार्दूलः (bhṛguśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among the Bhṛgus; तम् (tam) - that; वेदम् (vedam) - Veda; धारयिष्यति (dhārayiṣyati) - will uphold;]
(In Jamadagni, greatly fortunate, in (his) self purified by austerity, he also, the tiger among the Bhṛgus, will uphold that Veda.)
In Jamadagni, who is greatly fortunate and whose self is purified by austerity, he too, the tiger among the Bhṛgus, will uphold that Veda. (13-56-9)
कुलात्तु तव धर्मात्मन्कन्यां सोऽधिगमिष्यति। उद्भावनार्थं भवतो वंशस्य नृपसत्तम ॥१३-५६-१०॥
kulāttu tava dharmātman kanyāṁ so'dhigamiṣyati। udbhāvanārthaṁ bhavato vaṁśasya nṛpasattama ॥13-56-10॥
[कुलात्तु (kulāt tu) - from the family; but; तव (tava) - your; of you; धर्मात्मन् (dharmātman) - one whose soul is righteous; O righteous-souled; कन्यां (kanyāṁ) - daughter; सः (saḥ) - he; अधिगमिष्यति (adhigamiṣyati) - will obtain; will acquire; उद्भावनार्थं (udbhāvanārtham) - for the purpose of continuation; for origination; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; वंशस्य (vaṁśasya) - of the lineage; of the family; नृपसत्तम (nṛpasattama) - O best of kings;]
(But from the family, O righteous-souled, your daughter, he will obtain, for the purpose of continuation of your lineage, O best of kings.)
O best of kings, a righteous one from your family will obtain your daughter in order to ensure the continuation of your lineage. (13-56-10)
गाधेर्दुहितरं प्राप्य पौत्रीं तव महातपाः। ब्राह्मणं क्षत्रधर्माणं राममुत्पादयिष्यति ॥१३-५६-११॥
gādher duhitaraṃ prāpya pautrīṃ tava mahātapāḥ। brāhmaṇaṃ kṣatradharmāṇaṃ rāmam utpādayiṣyati ॥13-56-11॥
[गाधेः (gādheḥ) - of Gādhi; दुहितरं (duhitaraṃ) - daughter; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; पौत्रीं (pautrīṃ) - granddaughter; तव (tava) - of you; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the greatly austere one; ब्राह्मणं (brāhmaṇam) - a Brāhmaṇa; क्षत्रधर्माणं (kṣatradharmāṇam) - having the dharma of a Kṣatriya; रामम् (rāmam) - Rāma; उत्पादयिष्यति (utpādayiṣyati) - will produce;]
(Having obtained the daughter of Gādhi, your granddaughter, the greatly austere one will produce Rāma, a Brāhmaṇa with the dharma of a Kṣatriya.)
The greatly austere one, having married Gādhi's daughter, who is your granddaughter, will beget Rāma, a Brāhmaṇa possessing the duties of a Kṣatriya. (13-56-11)
क्षत्रियं विप्रकर्माणं बृहस्पतिमिवौजसा। विश्वामित्रं तव कुले गाधेः पुत्रं सुधार्मिकम् ॥ तपसा महता युक्तं प्रदास्यति महाद्युते ॥१३-५६-१२॥
kṣatriyaṃ vipra-karmāṇaṃ bṛhaspatim iva ojasā। viśvāmitraṃ tava kule gādheḥ putraṃ su-dhārmikam ॥ tapasā mahatā yuktaṃ pradāsyati mahā-dyute ॥13-56-12॥
[क्षत्रियं (kṣatriyam) - a kṣatriya; विप्रकर्माणं (vipra-karmāṇam) - with actions of a brāhmaṇa (priestly deeds); बृहस्पतिम् (bṛhaspatim) - Bṛhaspati; इव (iva) - like; औजसा (ojasā) - by power; विश्वामित्रं (viśvāmitram) - Viśvāmitra; तव (tava) - your; कुले (kule) - in the family; गाधेः (gādheḥ) - of Gādhi; पुत्रं (putram) - son; सुधार्मिकम् (su-dhārmikam) - very righteous; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महता (mahatā) - by great; युक्तं (yuktam) - endowed (with); प्रदास्यति (pradāsyati) - will grant; महाद्युते (mahā-dyute) - O greatly radiant one;]
(A kṣatriya with brāhmaṇa actions, like Bṛhaspati by power—Viśvāmitra, in your family, Gādhi's son, very righteous, endowed with great austerity, will grant, O greatly radiant one.)
O greatly radiant one, in your lineage, Gādhi's son Viśvāmitra—though a kṣatriya, possessing the actions of a brāhmaṇa and the power of Bṛhaspati, highly righteous and devoted to great austerity—will be granted. (13-56-12)
स्त्रियौ तु कारणं तत्र परिवर्ते भविष्यतः। पितामहनियोगाद्वै नान्यथैतद्भविष्यति ॥१३-५६-१३॥
striyau tu kāraṇaṃ tatra parivarte bhaviṣyataḥ। pitāmahaniyogād vai nānyathaitad bhaviṣyati॥13-56-13॥
[स्त्रियौ (striyau) - the two women; (dual form); तु (tu) - but; however; कारणं (kāraṇam) - the cause; reason; तत्र (tatra) - there; in that case; परिवर्ते (parivarte) - in the change; turning; भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - in the future; will be; (dual form, 'they [two] will become'); पितामहनियोगात् (pitāmahaniyogāt) - by the order of the grandfather (i.e., ancestor, or Brahmā); वै (vai) - indeed; certainly; न (na) - not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; एतत् (etat) - this; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; will happen;]
(The two women but are the cause there in the change, in the future they will become. By the order of the grandfather indeed, not otherwise this will happen.)
However, the two women are the cause in this matter of change; in future, by the command of the grandfather, this will indeed occur and not otherwise. (13-56-13)
तृतीये पुरुषे तुभ्यं ब्राह्मणत्वमुपैष्यति। भविता त्वं च सम्बन्धी भृगूणां भावितात्मनाम् ॥१३-५६-१४॥
tṛtīye puruṣe tubhyaṃ brāhmaṇatvam upaiṣyati। bhavitā tvaṃ ca sambandhī bhṛgūṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥13-56-14॥
[तृतीये (tṛtīye) - in the third; पुरुषे (puruṣe) - generation; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; ब्राह्मणत्वम् (brāhmaṇatvam) - Brahmin-hood; उपैष्यति (upaiṣyati) - will approach; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; सम्बन्धी (sambandhī) - relative; भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; भावितात्मनाम् (bhāvitātmanām) - of those whose self is purified;]
(In the third generation, to you Brahmin-hood will approach. Will be you and relative of the Bhṛgus, of those whose self is purified.)
In the third generation, Brahminhood will come to you. And you will be a relative of the Bhṛgus, those whose selves are purified. (13-56-14)

कुशिकस्तु मुनेर्वाक्यं च्यवनस्य महात्मनः। श्रुत्वा हृष्टोऽभवद्राजा वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ॥ एवमस्त्विति धर्मात्मा तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१३-५६-१५॥
kuśikastu munervākyaṃ cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ। śrutvā hṛṣṭo'bhavadrājā vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha ॥ evamastviti dharmātmā tadā bharatasattama ॥13-56-15॥

(But Kushika, hearing the words of the sage, Cyavana, the great-souled, delighted became the king, and these words indeed he said: "Thus let it be," saying the righteous-souled then, O best of the Bharatas. (13-56-15))
But King Kushika, having heard the words of the great-souled sage Cyavana, became delighted, and said these words: "So let it be," said the righteous king at that time, O foremost of the Bharatas. (13-56-15)
च्यवनस्तु महातेजाः पुनरेव नराधिपम्। वरार्थं चोदयामास तमुवाच स पार्थिवः ॥१३-५६-१६॥
cyavanastu mahātejāḥ punareva narādhipam। varārthaṃ codayāmāsa tamuvāca sa pārthivaḥ॥13-56-16॥

(Cyavana but of great brilliance again indeed the king for the sake of a boon urged him he said he the king.)
But Cyavana of great brilliance again urged the king for the sake of a boon, and he, the king, spoke to him. (13-56-16)
बाढमेवं ग्रहीष्यामि कामं त्वत्तो महामुने। ब्रह्मभूतं कुलं मेऽस्तु धर्मे चास्य मनो भवेत् ॥१३-५६-१७॥
bāḍham evaṁ grahīṣyāmi kāmaṁ tvatto mahāmune। brahmabhūtaṁ kulaṁ me'stu dharme cāsya mano bhavet ॥13-56-17॥
[बाढम् (bāḍham) - true; verily; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; in this way; ग्रहिष्यामि (grahīṣyāmi) - I shall accept; I will take; कामम् (kāmam) - willingly; as desired; त्वत्तः (tvattaḥ) - from you; महामुने (mahāmune) - O great sage; ब्रह्मभूतं (brahmabhūtaṁ) - having become one with Brahman; pertaining to Brahman; कुलम् (kulaṁ) - lineage; family; मे (me) - my; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; may it be; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; in dharma; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; of him; of it; मन् (mano) - mind; भवेत् (bhavet) - may it be; may it become;]
(True, thus I shall accept, willingly from you, O great sage. May my lineage become Brahman-natured, and in righteousness may his mind be.)
Certainly, I shall accept in this way, willingly from you, O great sage. May my lineage become one with Brahman, and may his mind be set in righteousness. (13-56-17)
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्येवं प्रत्युक्त्वा च्यवनो मुनिः। अभ्यनुज्ञाय नृपतिं तीर्थयात्रां ययौ तदा ॥१३-५६-१८॥
evam-uktas tatha ity evaṃ praty uktvā cyavano muniḥ। abhyanujñāya nṛpatiṃ tīrtha-yātrāṃ yayau tadā॥13-56-18॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; तथा (tathā) - so; in this way; इति (iti) - thus (quote-ending particle); एवम् (evam) - thus; प्रत्युक्त्वा (praty uktvā) - having replied; च्यवनः (cyavanaḥ) - Cyavana; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; अभ्यनुज्ञाय (abhyanujñāya) - having taken permission; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - the king; तीर्थयात्राम् (tīrtha-yātrām) - pilgrimage; ययौ (yayau) - went; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus having been addressed, so thus having replied, Cyavana sage, having taken permission from the king, pilgrimage went then.)
Thus addressed, and replying in this manner, the sage Cyavana, having obtained the king's permission, then went on pilgrimage. (13-56-18)
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वमशेषेण मया नृप। भृगूणां कुशिकानां च प्रति सम्बन्धकारणम् ॥१३-५६-१९॥
etat te kathitaṁ sarvam aśeṣeṇa mayā nṛpa। bhṛgūṇāṁ kuśikānāṁ ca prati sambandhakāraṇam ॥13-56-19॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; कथितं (kathitam) - told; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अशेषेण (aśeṣeṇa) - without remainder; मया (mayā) - by me; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; भृगूणाम् (bhṛgūṇām) - of the Bhṛgus; कुशिकानाम् (kuśikānām) - of the Kuśikas; च (ca) - and; प्रति (prati) - concerning; सम्बन्धकारणम् (sambandhakāraṇam) - reason for (their) relationship;]
(This to you all without remainder by me, O king, told; of the Bhṛgus and of the Kuśikas and concerning reason for (their) relationship.)
O king, all of this has been told to you by me completely—the reason for the connection between the Bhṛgus and the Kuśikas. (13-56-19)
यथोक्तं मुनिना चापि तथा तदभवन्नृप। जन्म रामस्य च मुनेर्विश्वामित्रस्य चैव ह ॥१३-५६-२०॥
yathoktaṃ muninā cāpi tathā tadabhavan nṛpa। janma rāmasya ca muner viśvāmitrasya caiva ha ॥13-56-20॥
