cyavana uvāca॥
Cyavana said.
avaśyaṁ kathanīyaṁ me tavaitan narapuṅgava। yadarthaṁ tvāham ucchettum samprāpto manujādhipa ॥13-56-1॥
O best among men, this must certainly be told by me to you. O king of men, for which purpose I have come to destroy you. (13-56-1)
bhṛgūṇāṃ kṣatriyā yājyā nityam eva janādhipa। te ca bhedaṃ gamiṣyanti daivayuktena hetunā॥13-56-2॥
O lord of people, the Kṣatriyas are always to be sacrificed to by the Bhṛgus. They too will be divided by a cause appointed by fate. (13-56-2)
kṣatriyāś ca bhṛgūn sarvān vadhiṣyanti narādhipa। ā garbhād anukṛntanto daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ॥13-56-3॥
O ruler of men, the kṣatriyas, oppressed by divine punishment, will slay all the Bhṛgus, cutting them down even from the womb. (13-56-3)
tat utpatsyate'smākaṃ kule gotravivardhanaḥ। aurvo nāma mahātejā jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ ॥13-56-4॥
In our lineage, one named Aurva will be born who will increase the family; he will possess great brilliance and will have radiance like fire and the sun. (13-56-4)
sa trailokyavināśāya kopāgniṃ janayiṣyati। mahīṃ saparvatavanāṃ yaḥ kariṣyati bhasmasāt॥13-56-5॥
He, for the destruction of the three worlds, will generate the fire of anger; he will turn the earth, with its mountains and forests, into ashes. (13-56-5)
kañcitkālaṁ tu taṁ vahniṁ sa eva śamayiṣyati। samudre vaḍavāvaktre prakṣipya munisattamaḥ॥13-56-6॥
However, for some time, he himself will appease that fire by casting it into the mouth of the Vaḍavā in the ocean, O best among sages. (13-56-6)
putraṃ tasya mahābhāgam ṛcīkaṃ bhṛgunandanam। sākṣātkṛtsno dhanurvedaḥ samupasthāsyate'nagha ॥13-56-7॥
O sinless one, the exceedingly fortunate son of his, Ṛcīka, the descendant of Bhṛgu, the entire science of archery will directly manifest before him. (13-56-7)
kṣatriyāṇām abhāvāya daiva-yuktena hetunā। sa tu taṃ pratigṛhyaiva putre saṅkrāmayiṣyati ॥13-56-8॥
But for the destruction of the kṣatriyas, by a cause joined with destiny, he, having accepted that, will indeed transfer it to his son. (13-56-8)
jamadaghnau mahābhāge tapasā bhāvitātmani। sa cāpi bhṛguśārdūlas taṃ vedaṃ dhārayiṣyati॥13-56-9॥
In Jamadagni, who is greatly fortunate and whose self is purified by austerity, he too, the tiger among the Bhṛgus, will uphold that Veda. (13-56-9)
kulāttu tava dharmātman kanyāṁ so'dhigamiṣyati। udbhāvanārthaṁ bhavato vaṁśasya nṛpasattama ॥13-56-10॥
O best of kings, a righteous one from your family will obtain your daughter in order to ensure the continuation of your lineage. (13-56-10)
gādher duhitaraṃ prāpya pautrīṃ tava mahātapāḥ। brāhmaṇaṃ kṣatradharmāṇaṃ rāmam utpādayiṣyati ॥13-56-11॥
The greatly austere one, having married Gādhi's daughter, who is your granddaughter, will beget Rāma, a Brāhmaṇa possessing the duties of a Kṣatriya. (13-56-11)
kṣatriyaṃ vipra-karmāṇaṃ bṛhaspatim iva ojasā। viśvāmitraṃ tava kule gādheḥ putraṃ su-dhārmikam ॥ tapasā mahatā yuktaṃ pradāsyati mahā-dyute ॥13-56-12॥
O greatly radiant one, in your lineage, Gādhi's son Viśvāmitra—though a kṣatriya, possessing the actions of a brāhmaṇa and the power of Bṛhaspati, highly righteous and devoted to great austerity—will be granted. (13-56-12)
striyau tu kāraṇaṃ tatra parivarte bhaviṣyataḥ। pitāmahaniyogād vai nānyathaitad bhaviṣyati॥13-56-13॥
However, the two women are the cause in this matter of change; in future, by the command of the grandfather, this will indeed occur and not otherwise. (13-56-13)
tṛtīye puruṣe tubhyaṃ brāhmaṇatvam upaiṣyati। bhavitā tvaṃ ca sambandhī bhṛgūṇāṃ bhāvitātmanām ॥13-56-14॥
In the third generation, Brahminhood will come to you. And you will be a relative of the Bhṛgus, those whose selves are purified. (13-56-14)
bhīṣma uvāca॥
Bhīṣma said;
kuśikastu munervākyaṃ cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ। śrutvā hṛṣṭo'bhavadrājā vākyaṃ cedamuvāca ha ॥ evamastviti dharmātmā tadā bharatasattama ॥13-56-15॥
But King Kushika, having heard the words of the great-souled sage Cyavana, became delighted, and said these words: "So let it be," said the righteous king at that time, O foremost of the Bharatas. (13-56-15)
cyavanastu mahātejāḥ punareva narādhipam। varārthaṃ codayāmāsa tamuvāca sa pārthivaḥ॥13-56-16॥
But Cyavana of great brilliance again urged the king for the sake of a boon, and he, the king, spoke to him. (13-56-16)
bāḍham evaṁ grahīṣyāmi kāmaṁ tvatto mahāmune। brahmabhūtaṁ kulaṁ me'stu dharme cāsya mano bhavet ॥13-56-17॥
Certainly, I shall accept in this way, willingly from you, O great sage. May my lineage become one with Brahman, and may his mind be set in righteousness. (13-56-17)
evam-uktas tatha ity evaṃ praty uktvā cyavano muniḥ। abhyanujñāya nṛpatiṃ tīrtha-yātrāṃ yayau tadā॥13-56-18॥
Thus addressed, and replying in this manner, the sage Cyavana, having obtained the king's permission, then went on pilgrimage. (13-56-18)
etat te kathitaṁ sarvam aśeṣeṇa mayā nṛpa। bhṛgūṇāṁ kuśikānāṁ ca prati sambandhakāraṇam ॥13-56-19॥
O king, all of this has been told to you by me completely—the reason for the connection between the Bhṛgus and the Kuśikas. (13-56-19)
yathoktaṃ muninā cāpi tathā tadabhavan nṛpa। janma rāmasya ca muner viśvāmitrasya caiva ha ॥13-56-20॥
O king, just as it was spoken by the sage, so it happened: the birth of Rāma, and of the sage Viśvāmitra as well, indeed. (13-56-20)
