युधिष्ठिरप्रतिप्रयाणम्
The return journey of Yudhishthira.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
तूष्णीम्भूते तदा भीष्मे पटे चित्रमिवार्पितम्। मुहूर्तमिव च ध्यात्वा व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः ॥ नृपं शयानं गाङ्गेयमिदमाह वचस्तदा ॥१३-१५२-१॥
When Bhīṣma had become silent and lay on the bed of arrows like a picture, after meditating for a moment, Vyāsa, the son of Satyavatī, then spoke these words to the king, the son of Gaṅgā, as he lay there. (13-152-1)
राजन्प्रकृतिमापन्नः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैः पार्थिवैश्चानुयायिभिः ॥१३-१५२-२॥
O king, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of the Kurus, having returned to his natural state, was accompanied by all his brothers and by kings who were his followers. (13-152-2)
उपास्ते त्वां नरव्याघ्र सह कृष्णेन धीमता। तमिमं पुरयानाय त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१३-१५२-३॥
He worships you, O tiger among men, along with the wise Kṛṣṇa. You ought to give him permission to proceed to the city. (13-152-3)
एवमुक्तो भगवता व्यासेन पृथिवीपतिः। युधिष्ठिरं सहामात्यमनुजज्ञे नदीसुतः ॥१३-१५२-४॥
Having thus been addressed by the revered Vyāsa, the king, son of the river, consented to Yudhiṣṭhira along with his ministers. (13-152-4)
उवाच चैनं मधुरं ततः शान्तनवो नृपः। प्रविशस्व पुरं राजन्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१३-१५२-५॥
The son of Śāntanu, the king, spoke sweet words to him: "Enter the city, O king. Let your mental suffering be gone." (13-152-5)
यजस्व विविधैर्यज्ञैर्बह्वन्नैः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः। ययातिरिव राजेन्द्र श्रद्धादमपुरःसरः ॥१३-१५२-६॥
O king, perform sacrifices of many kinds, with abundant food and your own obtained gifts, like Yayāti, always led by faith and self-control. (13-152-6)
क्षत्रधर्मरतः पार्थ पितॄन्देवांश्च तर्पय। श्रेयसा योक्ष्यसे चैव व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१३-१५२-७॥
O Arjuna, by engaging in the duty of a kṣatriya, satisfy both your ancestors and the gods. You will thereby gain merit, and let your mental anguish be dispelled. (13-152-7)
रञ्जयस्व प्रजाः सर्वाः प्रकृतीः परिसान्त्वय। सुहृदः फलसत्कारैरभ्यर्चय यथार्हतः ॥१३-१५२-८॥
Cheer all the subjects, fully conciliate the ministers. Honor your friends with rewards and gifts as appropriate. (13-152-8)
अनु त्वां तात जीवन्तु मित्राणि सुहृदस्तथा। चैत्यस्थाने स्थितं वृक्षं फलवन्तमिव द्विजाः ॥१३-१५२-९॥
May your friends and companions live on after you, dear one, just as the twice-born (Brahmins) live by a fruit-laden tree standing in a sanctified place. (13-152-9)
आगन्तव्यं च भवता समये मम पार्थिव। विनिवृत्ते दिनकरे प्रवृत्ते चोत्तरायणे ॥१३-१५२-१०॥
O king, you should come to me at the appointed time, when the sun has set and the northern course has begun. (13-152-10)
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु कौन्तेयः सोऽभिवाद्य पितामहम्। प्रययौ सपरीवारो नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥१३-१५२-११॥
Having thus spoken, the son of Kunti, after saluting his grandfather, departed with his family to the city called Nāgasāhvaya. (13-152-11)
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य गान्धारीं च पतिव्रताम्। सह तैरृषिभिः सर्वैर्भ्रातृभिः केशवेन च ॥१३-१५२-१२॥
Having placed Dhritarashtra at the front and Gandhari, devoted to her husband, together with those sages, all the brothers, and Keshava (Krishna). (13-152-12)
पौरजानपदैश्चैव मन्त्रिवृद्धैश्च पार्थिवः। प्रविवेश कुरुश्रेष्ठ पुरं वारणसाह्वयम् ॥१३-१५२-१३॥
O best of the Kurus, the king entered the city called Varanasi, accompanied by the citizens, country people, and elder ministers. (13-152-13)
