etasminn eva kāle tu vāsudevo'pi vīryavān। upāyād vṛṣṇibhiḥ sārdhaṃ puraṃ vāraṇasāhvayam॥14-65-1॥
[एतस्मिन्नेव (etasminn eva) - in this very (time); काले (kāle) - at the time; तु (tu) - but; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vāsudeva; अपि (api) - also; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; उपायात् (upāyāt) - approached; वृष्णिभिः (vṛṣṇibhiḥ) - with the Vṛṣṇis; सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with; पुरम् (puram) - city; वारणसाह्वयम् (vāraṇasāhvayam) - named Vārāṇasī;]
(In this very time but Vāsudeva also powerful approached with the Vṛṣṇis together the city named Vārāṇasī.)

समयं वाजिमेधस्य विदित्वा पुरुषर्षभः। यथोक्तो धर्मपुत्रेण व्रजन्स स्वपुरीं प्रति ॥१४-६५-२॥
samayaṃ vājimedhasya viditvā puruṣarṣabhaḥ। yathokto dharmaputreṇa vrajan sva-purīṃ prati॥14-65-2॥

रौक्मिणेयेन सहितो युयुधानेन चैव ह। चारुदेष्णेन साम्बेन गदेन कृतवर्मणा ॥१४-६५-३॥

द्रौपदीमुत्तरां चैव पृथां चाप्यवलोककः। समाश्वासयितुं चापि क्षत्रिया निहतेश्वराः ॥१४-६५-५॥
draupadīm uttarāṃ caiva pṛthāṃ cāpy avalokakaḥ। samāśvāsayituṃ cāpi kṣatriyā nihateśvarāḥ॥14-65-5॥

He, looking upon Draupadī, Uttarā, and also Pṛthā, as well as the Kṣatriya women whose husbands were slain, sought to console them. (14-65-5)
तानागतान्समीक्ष्यैव धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः। प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथान्यायं विदुरश्च महामनाः ॥१४-६५-६॥
tān āgatān samīkṣyaiva dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ। pratyagṛhṇād yathā-nyāyaṃ viduraś ca mahā-manāḥ॥14-65-6॥

Dhṛtarāṣṭra the king, having observed those who had come, received them as was the custom; and so did the great-minded Vidura. (14-65-6)
तत्रैव न्यवसत्कृष्णः स्वर्चितः पुरुषर्षभः। विदुरेण महातेजास्तथैव च युयुत्सुना ॥१४-६५-७॥
tatraiva nyavasat kṛṣṇaḥ svarcitaḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ। vidureṇa mahātejās tathaiva ca yuyutsunā॥14-65-7॥

(In that very place dwelt Kṛṣṇa, venerated, bull among men, by Vidura, greatly powerful, and in the same manner by Yuyutsu.)
At that very place, Kṛṣṇa, the illustrious bull among men, dwelt—honored by the mighty Vidura, and likewise by Yuyutsu. (14-65-7)
वसत्सु वृष्णिवीरेषु तत्राथ जनमेजय। जज्ञे तव पिता राजन्परिक्षित्परवीरहा ॥१४-६५-८॥
vasatsu vṛṣṇivīreṣu tatrātha janamejaya। jajñe tava pitā rājan parikṣit paravīrahā ॥14-65-8॥

(While dwelling among the heroes of the Vṛṣṇi clan, there then, O Janamejaya, was born your father, O king, Parikṣit, destroyer of enemy heroes.)
O Janamejaya, while the heroes of the Vṛṣṇi clan resided there, then your father Parikṣit, the destroyer of enemy heroes, was born, O king. (14-65-8)
स तु राजा महाराज ब्रह्मास्त्रेणाभिपीडितः। शवो बभूव निश्चेष्टो हर्षशोकविवर्धनः ॥१४-६५-९॥
sa tu rājā mahārāja brahmāstreṇābhipīḍitaḥ। śavo babhūva niśceṣṭo harṣaśokavivardhanaḥ॥14-65-9॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; राजा (rājā) - king; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; ब्रह्मास्त्रेण (brahmāstreṇa) - by the Brahmāstra; अभिपीडितः (abhipīḍitaḥ) - oppressed; afflicted; शवः (śavaḥ) - corpse; बभूव (babhūva) - became; निश्चेष्टः (niśceṣṭaḥ) - motionless; हर्षशोकविवर्धनः (harṣaśokavivardhanaḥ) - increaser of joy and sorrow;]
(He but king great king, by the Brahmāstra afflicted, corpse became, motionless, increaser of joy and sorrow.)
But that king, the great king, afflicted by the Brahmāstra, became a motionless corpse, increasing both joy and sorrow. (14-65-9)
हृष्टानां सिंहनादेन जनानां तत्र निस्वनः। आविश्य प्रदिशः सर्वाः पुनरेव व्युपारमत् ॥१४-६५-१०॥
hṛṣṭānāṃ siṃhanādena janānāṃ tatra nisvanaḥ. āviśya pradiśaḥ sarvāḥ punareva vyupāramat ॥14-65-10॥
[हृष्टानां (hṛṣṭānāṃ) - of the delighted; सिंहनादेन (siṃhanādena) - by the lion-roar; जनानां (janānāṃ) - of the people; तत्र (tatra) - there; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - shout; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; प्रदिशः (pradiśaḥ) - quarters (directions); सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; पुनरेव (punareva) - again indeed; व्युपारमत् (vyupāramat) - ceased;]
(Of the delighted, by the lion-roar, of the people, there, the shout, having entered, the quarters (directions), all, again indeed, ceased.)
There, the shout of the people who were delighted, like a lion's roar, after spreading in all directions, again ceased. (14-65-10)
ततः सोऽतित्वरः कृष्णो विवेशान्तःपुरं तदा। युयुधानद्वितीयो वै व्यथितेन्द्रियमानसः ॥१४-६५-११॥
tataḥ so'titvaraḥ kṛṣṇo viveśāntaḥpuraṃ tadā। yuyudhānadvitīyo vai vyathitendriyamānasaḥ ॥14-65-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अतित्वरः (atitvaraḥ) - very swift; highly hurried; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; अन्तःपुरम् (antaḥpuram) - inner apartments; palace quarters; तदा (tadā) - then; युयुधानद्वितीयः (yuyudhānadvitīyaḥ) - accompanied by Yuyudhāna (Sātyaki); having Yuyudhāna as second; वै (vai) - indeed; व्यथितेन्द्रियमानसः (vyathitendriyamānasaḥ) - with senses and mind distressed;]
(Then he, very swift Kṛṣṇa, entered the inner palace then, accompanied by Yuyudhāna indeed, with senses and mind distressed.)
Then Kṛṣṇa, moving with great haste and distressed in his mind and senses, entered the inner palace at that moment, accompanied by Yuyudhāna. (14-65-11)
ततस्त्वरितमायान्तीं ददर्श स्वां पितृष्वसाम्। क्रोशन्तीमभिधावेति वासुदेवं पुनः पुनः ॥१४-६५-१२॥
tatas tvaritam āyāntīṃ dadarśa svāṃ pitṛṣvasām। krośantīm abhidhāveti vāsudevaṃ punaḥ punaḥ ॥14-65-12॥

(O chief of the Yadus, O lord, who is this son born of your sister, killed by Aśvatthāman—bring him to life, O Keśava.)
O chief of the Yadus, O Keśava, the son born of your sister has been killed by Aśvatthāman. O lord, please bring him back to life. (14-65-16)
त्वया ह्येतत्प्रतिज्ञातमैषीके यदुनन्दन। अहं सञ्जीवयिष्यामि मृतं जातमिति प्रभो ॥१४-६५-१७॥
tvayā hy etat pratijñātam aiṣīke yadunandana। ahaṃ sañjīvayiṣyāmi mṛtaṃ jātam iti prabho ॥14-65-17॥

(By you indeed this is promised, O descendant of Aiṣīka, O delight of the Yadus: I will revive the dead who has become (dead), thus, O lord.)
This, O descendant of Aiṣīka, O joy of the Yadus, has indeed been promised by you: "O lord, I will revive the one who has died." (14-65-17)
सोऽयं जातो मृतस्तात पश्यैनं पुरुषर्षभ। उत्तरां च सुभद्रां च द्रौपदीं मां च माधव ॥१४-६५-१८॥
so'yaṁ jāto mṛtastāta paśyainaṁ puruṣarṣabha. uttarāṁ ca subhadrāṁ ca draupadīṁ māṁ ca mādhava ॥14-65-18॥

He—the child who was born—has died, O dear one; see him, O best of men. See Uttarā, Subhadrā, Draupadī, and me, O Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa). (14-65-18)
धर्मपुत्रं च भीमं च फल्गुनं नकुलं तथा। सहदेवं च दुर्धर्ष सर्वान्नस्त्रातुमर्हसि ॥१४-६५-१९॥

You ought to protect Dharmaputra, Bhima, Phalguna, Nakula, Sahadeva, and all of us, O invincible one. (14-65-19)
अस्मिन्प्राणाः समायत्ताः पाण्डवानां ममैव च। पाण्डोश्च पिण्डो दाशार्ह तथैव श्वशुरस्य मे ॥१४-६५-२०॥

(In this, life-forces dependent of the Pāṇḍavas, of me indeed and; of Pāṇḍu and funerary offering of the Dāśārha, in the same way, of father-in-law of me.)
In this, the lives of the Pāṇḍavas and myself are dependent; the ancestral offering of Pāṇḍu and of the Dāśārha, and likewise of my father-in-law. (14-65-20)
अभिमन्योश्च भद्रं ते प्रियस्य सदृशस्य च। प्रियमुत्पादयाद्य त्वं प्रेतस्यापि जनार्दन ॥१४-६५-२१॥
abhimanyoś ca bhadraṃ te priyasya sadṛśasya ca। priyam utpādayādya tvaṃ pretasyāpi janārdana ॥14-65-21॥
[अभिमन्योः (abhimanyoḥ) - of Abhimanyu; च (ca) - and; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - welfare; good; ते (te) - for you; प्रियस्य (priyasya) - of the dear one; सदृशस्य (sadṛśasya) - of similar (one); च (ca) - and; प्रियम् (priyam) - beloved; dear (thing/person); उत्पादय (utpādaya) - produce; generate; अद्य (adya) - today; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; प्रेतस्य (pretasya) - of the departed; of the dead one; अपि (api) - even; also; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana;]
(And of Abhimanyu, welfare for you, and of the dear one, of similar (one); beloved generate today you even of the departed, O Janardana.)
And, O Janardana, may you bring forth beloved offspring today, even of Abhimanyu who was dear and like yourself, now departed. (14-65-21)
उत्तरा हि प्रियोक्तं वै कथयत्यरिसूदन। अभिमन्योर्वचः कृष्ण प्रियत्वात्ते न संशयः ॥१४-६५-२२॥
uttarā hi priyoktaṃ vai kathayaty arisūdana. abhimanyor vacaḥ kṛṣṇa priyatvāt te na saṃśayaḥ ॥14-65-22॥

(Uttara indeed affectionately spoken certainly speaks, O destroyer of enemies, of Abhimanyu's words, O Kṛṣṇa, because of affection for you, there is no doubt.)
Uttara indeed certainly speaks affectionately, O destroyer of enemies, the words of Abhimanyu, O Kṛṣṇa; because of affection for you, there is no doubt about it. (14-65-22)
अब्रवीत्किल दाशार्ह वैराटीमार्जुनिः पुरा। मातुलस्य कुलं भद्रे तव पुत्रो गमिष्यति ॥१४-६५-२३॥
abravīt kila dāśārha vairāṭī-mārjuniḥ purā। mātulasya kulaṃ bhadre tava putro gamiṣyati ॥14-65-23॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - (he) spoke; किल (kila) - indeed; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - Dāśārha (descendant of the Daśāras, epithet of Kṛṣṇa); वैराटीमार्जुनिः (vairāṭī-mārjuniḥ) - Vairāṭī-mārjuniḥ (Arjuna, son of Mārjuni, husband of the Virāṭa's daughter); पुरा (purā) - formerly; मातुलस्य (mātulasya) - of the maternal uncle; कुलं (kulaṃ) - family; भद्रे (bhadre) - O auspicious (lady); तव (tava) - your; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; गमिष्यति (gamiṣyati) - will go;]
(He indeed spoke, O auspicious one, Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa), Arjuna, (as) husband of the Virāṭa's daughter, formerly: To the family of the maternal uncle your son will go.)
Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa), referring to Arjuna, the husband of Virāṭa’s daughter, once said: “O fortunate one, your son will go to the family of his maternal uncle.” (14-65-23)
गत्वा वृष्ण्यन्धककुलं धनुर्वेदं ग्रहीष्यति। अस्त्राणि च विचित्राणि नीतिशास्त्रं च केवलम् ॥१४-६५-२४॥
gatvā vṛṣṇy-andhaka-kulaṃ dhanur-vedaṃ grahīṣyati। astrāṇi ca vicitrāṇi nītiśāstraṃ ca kevalam ॥14-65-24॥
[गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; वृष्ण्यन्धककुलं (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-kulam) - the clan of Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; धनुर्वेदं (dhanur-vedam) - science of archery; ग्रहीष्यति (grahīṣyati) - he will take; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; च (ca) - and; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - various; नीतिशास्त्रं (nītiśāstram) - science of policy; च (ca) - and; केवलम् (kevalam) - alone;]
(Having gone to the clan of Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, he will take the science of archery, and various weapons, and the science of policy alone.)
He will go to the clan of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, and there he will learn the science of archery, various weapons, and solely the science of policy. (14-65-24)
इत्येतत्प्रणयात्तात सौभद्रः परवीरहा। कथयामास दुर्धर्षस्तथा चैतन्न संशयः ॥१४-६५-२५॥
ity etat praṇayāt tāta saubhadraḥ paravīrahā. kathayām āsa durdharṣas tathā caitan na saṃśayaḥ ॥14-65-25॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; प्रणयात् (praṇayāt) - from affection; तात (tāta) - O father; सौभद्रः (saubhadraḥ) - Saubhadra (Abhimanyu's son); परवीरहा (paravīrahā) - destroyer of enemy heroes; कथयाम् (kathayām) - recounted; आस (āsa) - did say; दुर्धर्षः (durdharṣaḥ) - the unconquerable one; तथा (tathā) - also; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Thus this from affection, O father, Saubhadra, destroyer of enemy heroes, recounted did say the unconquerable one; also and this not doubt.)
Thus, out of affection, O father, Saubhadra, the destroyer of enemy heroes, told this; and the unconquerable one also said this without doubt. (14-65-25)
तास्त्वां वयं प्रणम्येह याचामो मधुसूदन। कुलस्यास्य हितार्थं त्वं कुरु कल्याणमुत्तमम् ॥१४-६५-२६॥
tās tvāṁ vayaṁ praṇamya iha yācāmo madhusūdana । kulasyāsya hitārthaṁ tvaṁ kuru kalyāṇam uttamam ॥14-65-26॥
[ताः (tāḥ) - they; (those women); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; (accusative); वयम् (vayam) - we; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; इह (iha) - here; याचामः (yācāmaḥ) - we beg; मधुसूदन (madhusūdana) - O Madhusūdana; (slayer of Madhu); कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; अस्य (asya) - of this; हितार्थम् (hitārtham) - for the purpose of welfare; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कुरु (kuru) - do (imperative); कल्याणम् (kalyāṇam) - auspiciousness; welfare; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - the highest; supreme;]
(They, you, we having bowed here, we beg, O Madhusūdana, of the family of this, for the purpose of welfare, you do auspiciousness supreme.)
Having bowed to you here, we beg you, O Madhusūdana: for the welfare of this family, please perform the highest auspiciousness. (14-65-26)
एवमुक्त्वा तु वार्ष्णेयं पृथा पृथुललोचना। उच्छ्रित्य बाहू दुःखार्ता ताश्चान्याः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥१४-६५-२७॥
evam-uktvā tu vārṣṇeyaṃ pṛthā pṛthula-locanā। ucchṛtya bāhū duḥkhārtā tāś ca anyāḥ prapatan bhuvi ॥14-65-27॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; तु (tu) - but; वार्ष्णेयं (vārṣṇeyam) - to the descendant of Vṛṣṇi; पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; पृथुललोचना (pṛthula-locanā) - wide-eyed; उच्छ्रित्य (ucchṛtya) - having raised; बाहू (bāhū) - arms; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - distressed by sorrow; ताः (tāḥ) - they; च (ca) - and; अन्याः (anyāḥ) - others; प्रापतन् (prapatan) - fell down; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Thus having spoken but to the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, Pṛthā, wide-eyed, having raised arms, distressed by sorrow, they and others fell down on the ground.)
After thus speaking to the descendant of Vṛṣṇi, Pṛthā, wide-eyed and sorrowful, raised her arms, and she and the other women fell to the ground in distress. (14-65-27)
अब्रुवंश्च महाराज सर्वाः सास्राविलेक्षणाः। स्वस्रीयो वासुदेवस्य मृतो जात इति प्रभो ॥१४-६५-२८॥
abruvaṃś ca mahārāja sarvāḥ sāsrāvilekṣaṇāḥ। svasrīyo vāsudevasya mṛto jāta iti prabho ॥14-65-28॥
[अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said; च (ca) - and; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all (women); सास्राविलेक्षणाः (sāsrāvilekṣaṇāḥ) - with tear-filled eyes; स्वस्रीयः (svasrīyaḥ) - the sister's son; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; जातः (jātaḥ) - become; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(They said and, O great king, all with tear-filled eyes: "the sister's son of Vāsudeva has become dead" thus, O lord.)
And all the women, with tear-filled eyes, said, "O great king, the sister's son of Vāsudeva has died," O lord. (14-65-28)
एवमुक्ते ततः कुन्तीं प्रत्यगृह्णाज्जनार्दनः। भूमौ निपतितां चैनां सान्त्वयामास भारत ॥१४-६५-२९॥
evam-ukte tataḥ kuntīṃ pratyagṛhṇāj janārdanaḥ. bhūmau nipatitāṃ ca enāṃ sāntvayāmāsa bhārata ॥14-65-29॥
[एवम् उक्ते (evam ukte) - when thus spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कुन्तीं (kuntīṃ) - Kuntī (accusative, referring to Kunti Devi); प्रत्यगृह्णात् (pratyagṛhṇāt) - accepted; took up; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Krishna); भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निपतितां (nipatitām) - fallen; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; सान्त्वयामास (sāntvayāmāsa) - comforted; consoled; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(When thus spoken, then Janārdana took up Kuntī; her who had fallen on the ground, and consoled her, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, when those words were spoken, Janārdana then took up Kuntī who had fallen on the ground and consoled her. (14-65-29)
