Vaiśampāyana said.
उत्थितायां पृथायां तु सुभद्रा भ्रातरं तदा। दृष्ट्वा चुक्रोश दुःखार्ता वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१४-६६-१॥
utthitāyāṃ pṛthāyāṃ tu subhadrā bhrātaraṃ tadā। dṛṣṭvā cukrośa duḥkhārtā vacanaṃ cedam abravīt ॥14-66-1॥
[उत्थितायां (utthitāyām) - having risen; in the one who has risen; पृथायां (pṛthāyām) - in Pṛthā (Kuntī); तु (tu) - but; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - brother; तदा (tadā) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; चुक्रोश (cukrośa) - cried out; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; वचनं (vacanam) - words; statement; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(But when Pṛthā had risen, Subhadrā then, having seen her brother, cried out, afflicted by sorrow, and spoke these words.)
But as Kuntī (Pṛthā) arose, Subhadrā saw her brother, then, afflicted with grief, she cried out and spoke these words. (14-66-1)
पुण्डरीकाक्ष पश्यस्व पौत्रं पार्थस्य धीमतः। परिक्षीणेषु कुरुषु परिक्षीणं गतायुषम् ॥१४-६६-२॥
puṇḍarīkākṣa paśyasva pautraṃ pārthasya dhīmataḥ। parikṣīṇeṣu kuruṣu parikṣīṇaṃ gatāyuṣam ॥14-66-2॥
[पुण्डरीकाक्ष (puṇḍarīkākṣa) - O lotus-eyed; पश्यस्व (paśyasva) - see; पौत्रं (pautram) - grandson; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Pārtha (son of Prithā/Arjuna); धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; परिक्षीणेषु (parikṣīṇeṣu) - among those who are depleted; कुरुषु (kuruṣu) - among the Kurus; परिक्षीणं (parikṣīṇam) - depleted; गतायुषम् (gatāyuṣam) - whose life has ended;]
(O lotus-eyed, see the grandson of the wise Pārtha, depleted among the depleted Kurus, whose life has ended.)
O lotus-eyed one, behold the grandson of the wise Pārtha, depleted among the diminished Kurus, his lifespan having come to an end. (14-66-2)
इषीका द्रोणपुत्रेण भीमसेनार्थमुद्यता। सोत्तरायां निपतिता विजये मयि चैव ह ॥१४-६६-३॥
iṣīkā droṇaputreṇa bhīmasenārthamudyatā। sottarāyāṃ nipatitā vijaye mayi caiva ha ॥14-66-3॥
[इषीका (iṣīkā) - reed-arrow; द्रोणपुत्रेण (droṇaputreṇa) - by Droṇa's son; भीमसेनार्थम् (bhīmasenārtham) - for Bhīmasena (for the sake of Bhīmasena); उद्यता (udyatā) - which was aimed; (which rose up; which was set in motion;) सा (sā) - that (she; it;) उत्तरायां (uttarāyāṃ) - in Uttarā (in Uttarā); निपतिता (nipatitā) - fell down; (descended; landed;) विजये (vijaye) - on vijaya (on my victory; on my body;) मयि (mayi) - in me; (on me;) च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - surely;]
(The reed-arrow by Droṇa's son, aimed for Bhīmasena, that fell in Uttarā, fell on my victory, in me, and indeed, surely. (14-66-3))
The reed-arrow let loose by Droṇa's son for Bhīmasena, that arrow instead struck Uttarā, and fell on me as well. (14-66-3)
सेयं ज्वलन्ती हृदये मयि तिष्ठति केशव। यन्न पश्यामि दुर्धर्ष मम पुत्रसुतं विभो ॥१४-६६-४॥
seyaṁ jvalantī hṛdaye mayi tiṣṭhati keśava। yan na paśyāmi durdharṣa mama putrasutaṁ vibho ॥14-66-4॥
[सा (sā) - she; इयम् (iyam) - this; ज्वलन्ती (jvalantī) - burning; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in (the) heart; मयि (mayi) - in me; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; केशव (keśava) - O Keśava; यत् (yat) - that; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - Durdharṣa; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रसुतम् (putrasutam) - son; विभो (vibho) - O Lord;]
(She, this burning, in the heart, in me, remains, O Keśava; because not I see Durdharṣa, my son, O Lord. (14-66-4))
O Keśava, this burning (pain) remains in my heart, O Lord, because I do not see Durdharṣa, my son. (14-66-4)
किं नु वक्ष्यति धर्मात्मा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भीमसेनार्जुनौ चापि माद्रवत्याः सुतौ च तौ ॥१४-६६-५॥
kiṁ nu vakṣyati dharmātmā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhīmasenārjunau cāpi mādravatyāḥ sutau ca tau ॥14-66-5॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - king of righteousness; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; भीमसेन-अर्जुनौ (bhīmasena-arjunau) - Bhimasena and Arjuna; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; माद्रवत्याः (mādravatyāḥ) - of Madri; सुतौ (sutau) - the two sons; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - those two;]
(What indeed will say the righteous-souled king of righteousness Yudhishthira, and also Bhimasena and Arjuna, and those two sons of Madri?)
What, indeed, will the righteous-souled king Yudhishthira say, and Bhimasena and Arjuna, and those two sons of Madri? (14-66-5)
श्रुत्वाभिमन्योस्तनयं जातं च मृतमेव च। मुषिता इव वार्ष्णेय द्रोणपुत्रेण पाण्डवाः ॥१४-६६-६॥
śrutvābhimanyostanayaṃ jātaṃ ca mṛtameva ca। muṣitā iva vārṣṇeya droṇaputreṇa pāṇḍavāḥ ॥14-66-6॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; अभिमन्योः (abhimanyoḥ) - of Abhimanyu; तनयम् (tanayam) - son; जातं (jātam) - born; च (ca) - and; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; मुषिता (muṣitā) - plundered; इव (iva) - as if; वार्ष्णेय (vārṣṇeya) - O descendant of Vṛṣṇi; द्रोणपुत्रेण (droṇaputreṇa) - by Droṇa's son; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Having heard the son of Abhimanyu was born and (also) dead indeed and, as if plundered, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, by Droṇa's son, the Pāṇḍavas (were).)
When they heard that Abhimanyu's son was born but was already dead, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, the Pāṇḍavas felt as if they had been plundered by Droṇa's son. (14-66-6)
अभिमन्युः प्रियः कृष्ण पितॄणां नात्र संशयः। ते श्रुत्वा किं नु वक्ष्यन्ति द्रोणपुत्रास्त्रनिर्जिताः ॥१४-६६-७॥
abhimanyuḥ priyaḥ kṛṣṇa pitṝṇāṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ। te śrutvā kiṃ nu vakṣyanti droṇaputrāstranirjitāḥ ॥14-66-7॥
[अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) - Abhimanyu; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; पितॄणां (pitṝṇāṃ) - to the fathers; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; ते (te) - they; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; वक्ष्यन्ति (vakṣyanti) - will speak; द्रोणपुत्रास्त्रनिर्जिताः (droṇaputrāstranirjitāḥ) - conquered by droṇaputra's weapon;]
(Abhimanyu dear O Kṛṣṇa to the fathers not here doubt. They having heard what indeed will speak conquered by Droṇaputra's weapon.)
O Kṛṣṇa, Abhimanyu is dear to the elders—there is no doubt here. What indeed will they say, having heard, after being conquered by Droṇaputra's weapon? (14-66-7)
भवितातः परं दुःखं किं नु मन्ये जनार्दन। अभिमन्योः सुतात्कृष्ण मृताज्जातादरिंदम ॥१४-६६-८॥
bhavitātaḥ paraṁ duḥkhaṁ kiṁ nu manye janārdana। abhimanyoḥ sutāt kṛṣṇa mṛtāj jātād ariṁdama ॥14-66-8॥
[भवितातः (bhavitātaḥ) - from (my) survival; परं (paraṁ) - greater; दुःखं (duḥkhaṁ) - sorrow; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मन््ये (manye) - I think; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; अभिमन्योः (abhimanyoḥ) - of Abhimanyu; सुतात् (sutāt) - than the son; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Krishna; मृतात् (mṛtāt) - from having died; जात (jāta) - having occurred; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - O subduer of foes;]
(From (my) survival, what greater sorrow indeed I think, O Janardana, than the son of Abhimanyu, O Krishna, from having died, having occurred, O subduer of foes.)
O Janardana, O Krishna, I think there is no greater sorrow from my survival than that which has occurred by the death of Abhimanyu's son, O subduer of foes. (14-66-8)
साहं प्रसादये कृष्ण त्वामद्य शिरसा नता। पृथेयं द्रौपदी चैव ताः पश्य पुरुषोत्तम ॥१४-६६-९॥
sāhaṃ prasādaye kṛṣṇa tvām adya śirasā natā. pṛthā iyam draupadī ca eva tāḥ paśya puruṣottama ॥14-66-9॥
[साहं (sāham) - therefore I; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - I request (with reverence); कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (my) head; नता (natā) - bowed (down); पृथा (pṛthā) - Pṛthā; इयम् (iyam) - this (one); द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ताः (tāḥ) - they (feminine); पश्य (paśya) - see; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O best of men;]
(Therefore I request you, O Kṛṣṇa, today, with my head bowed. Pṛthā, this Draupadī also indeed, they—see, O best of men. (14-66-9))
Therefore, O Kṛṣṇa, with my head bowed, I request you today. See Pṛthā and this Draupadī as well, O best of men. (14-66-9)
यदा द्रोणसुतो गर्भान्पाण्डूनां हन्ति माधव। तदा किल त्वया द्रौणिः क्रुद्धेनोक्तोऽरिमर्दन ॥१४-६६-१०॥
yadā droṇasuto garbhān pāṇḍūnāṃ hanti mādhava। tadā kila tvayā drauṇiḥ kruddhena ukto'rimardana ॥14-66-10॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; द्रोणसुतः (droṇasutaḥ) - the son of Droṇa; गर्भान् (garbhān) - unborn children; पाण्डूनाम् (pāṇḍūnām) - of the Pāṇḍus; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; तदा (tadā) - then; किल (kila) - indeed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drauṇi (Aśvatthāma, son of Droṇa); क्रुद्धेन (kruddhena) - angry; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was addressed; अरिमर्दन (arimardana) - O destroyer of enemies;]
(When the son of Droṇa kills the unborn children of the Pāṇḍus, O Mādhava, then indeed by you Drauṇi, being angry, was addressed, O destroyer of enemies.)
O Mādhava, when the son of Droṇa killed the unborn children of the Pāṇḍus, then indeed Drauṇi, in anger, was addressed by you, O destroyer of enemies. (14-66-10)
अकामं त्वा करिष्यामि ब्रह्मबन्धो नराधम। अहं सञ्जीवयिष्यामि किरीटितनयात्मजम् ॥१४-६६-११॥
akāmaṁ tvā kariṣyāmi brahmabandho narādhama। ahaṁ sañjīvayiṣyāmi kirīṭitanayātmajam ॥14-66-11॥
[अकामम् (akāmaṁ) - not willingly; without desire; त्वा (tvā) - you (accusative singular); करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; ब्रह्मबन्धो (brahmabandho) - O pseudo-brāhmaṇa; one merely related to Brāhmaṇas; नराधम (narādhama) - O lowest of men; अहं (ahaṁ) - I; सञ्जीवयिष्यामि (sañjīvayiṣyāmi) - I will revive; I will bring to life; किरीटितनयात्मजम् (kirīṭitanayātmajam) - the son of the son of the one with the crown (Arjuna);]
(Not willingly you I will do, O pseudo-brāhmaṇa, O lowest of men. I will revive the son of the son of the one with the crown.)
O pseudo-brāhmaṇa, O lowest of men, I will do this for you not willingly. I will bring back to life the son of Arjuna. (14-66-11)
इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा जानमाना बलं तव। प्रसादये त्वा दुर्धर्ष जीवतामभिमन्युजः ॥१४-६६-१२॥
ity etad vacanaṃ śrutvā jānamānā balaṃ tava। prasādaye tvā durdharṣa jīvatām abhimanyujaḥ ॥14-66-12॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; जानमाना (jānamānā) - knowing; बलम् (balam) - strength; तव (tava) - your; प्रसादये (prasādaye) - I seek favor; त्वा (tvā) - you; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - unconquerable one; जीवतात् (jīvatām) - of the living; अभिमन्युजः (abhimanyujaḥ) - O son of Abhimanyu;]
(Thus, this speech having heard, knowing your strength, I seek favor from you, O unconquerable one amongst the living, son of Abhimanyu.)
Having heard this speech and knowing your strength, I seek your favor, O unconquerable one among the living, O son of Abhimanyu. (14-66-12)
यद्येवं त्वं प्रतिश्रुत्य न करोषि वचः शुभम्। सफलं वृष्णिशार्दूल मृतां मामुपधारय ॥१४-६६-१३॥
yadyevaṃ tvaṃ pratiśrutya na karoṣi vacaḥ śubham। saphalaṃ vṛṣṇiśārdūla mṛtāṃ māmupadhāraya ॥14-66-13॥
[यद्येवं (yad evaṃ) - if thus; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; न (na) - not; करोषि (karoṣi) - do; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; सफलम् (saphalam) - fruitful; वृष्णिशार्दूल (vṛṣṇiśārdūla) - O tiger among Vṛṣṇis; मृताम् (mṛtām) - dead; माम् (mām) - me; उपधारय (upadhāraya) - regard; ॥१४-६६-१३॥ (14-66-13) -;]
(If thus you, having promised, do not do the auspicious word, fruitful O tiger among Vṛṣṇis, consider me dead.)
If, having promised thus, you do not carry out your auspicious word, O tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, then regard me as dead. (14-66-13)
अभिमन्योः सुतो वीर न सञ्जीवति यद्ययम्। जीवति त्वयि दुर्धर्ष किं करिष्याम्यहं त्वया ॥१४-६६-१४॥
abhimanyoḥ suto vīra na sañjīvati yadyayam। jīvati tvayi durdharṣa kiṃ kariṣyāmyahaṃ tvayā॥14-66-14॥
[अभिमन्योः (abhimanyoḥ) - of Abhimanyu; (genitive singular, masculine) सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; (nominative singular, masculine) वीर (vīra) - O hero; न (na) - not; सञ्जीवति (sañjīvati) - he revives; यदि (yadi) - if; अयम् (ayam) - this (one); जीवति (jīvati) - is alive; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; (locative singular, second person pronoun) दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - O unconquerable; किं (kiṃ) - what; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - shall I do; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; (instrumental singular, second person pronoun);]
(O hero, the son of Abhimanyu does not revive if this (one) is so. O unconquerable, if you are alive, what shall I do with you?)
O hero, if the son of Abhimanyu does not return to life, O unconquerable one, what should I do with you being alive? (14-66-14)
सञ्जीवयैनं दुर्धर्ष मृतं त्वमभिमन्युजम्। सदृशाक्षसुतं वीर सस्यं वर्षन्निवाम्बुदः ॥१४-६६-१५॥
sañjīvaya enaṃ durdharṣa mṛtaṃ tvam abhimanyujam। sadṛśākṣasutam vīra sasyaṃ varṣan nivāmbudaḥ ॥14-66-15॥
[सञ्जीवय (sañjīvaya) - revive; एनम् (enaṃ) - him; दुर्धर्ष (durdharṣa) - Durdharṣa; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अभिमन्युजम् (abhimanyujam) - son of Abhimanyu; सदृश (sadṛśa) - like; अक्षसुतम् (akṣasutam) - son of Akṣa (i.e., righteous youth); वीर (vīra) - hero; सस्यम् (sasyaṃ) - crop; वर्षन् (varṣan) - pouring; इव (iva) - like; अम्बुदः (ambudaḥ) - cloud;]
(Revive him, O Durdharṣa, the dead son of Abhimanyu; like a cloud pouring on the crop, O hero, upon the son of Akṣa.)
Revive this son of Abhimanyu, O Durdharṣa, who is dead; O hero, like a raincloud pouring down on a crop, upon the son of Akṣa. (14-66-15)
त्वं हि केशव धर्मात्मा सत्यवान्सत्यविक्रमः। स तां वाचमृतां कर्तुमर्हसि त्वमरिंदम ॥१४-६६-१६॥
tvaṁ hi keśava dharmātmā satyavān satyavikramaḥ। sa tāṁ vācam ṛtāṁ kartum arhasi tvam ariṁdama ॥14-66-16॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; केशव (keśava) - Keśava (O Krishna); धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; सत्यवान् (satyavān) - truthful; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - truth-in-effort (one who acts truthfully); स (sa) - he; तां (tāṁ) - that; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; ऋताम् (ṛtām) - truthful; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are fit; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अरिंदम (ariṁdama) - subduer of enemies;]
(You indeed, Keśava, righteous-souled, truthful, truthful in action; he that speech truthful to do are fit, you, subduer of enemies.)
O Keśava, you indeed are righteous, truthful, and true in your actions; you are fit to fulfill that truthful promise, O subduer of enemies. (14-66-16)
इच्छन्नपि हि लोकांस्त्रीञ्जीवयेथा मृतानिमान्। किं पुनर्दयितं जातं स्वस्रीयस्यात्मजं मृतम् ॥१४-६६-१७॥
icchann api hi lokāṁs trīn jīvayet hā mṛtān imān। kiṁ punaḥ dayitaṁ jātam svasrīyasya ātmajam mṛtam॥14-66-17॥
[इच्छन् (icchan) - desiring; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; जीवयेत् (jīvayet) - could restore to life; ह (hā) - alas; मृतान् (mṛtān) - dead; इमान् (imān) - these; किं (kiṁ) - what to say of; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; दयितं (dayitam) - beloved; जातं (jātam) - born; स्वस्रीयस्य (svasrīyasya) - of the sister's son; आत्मजं (ātmajam) - own son; मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead;]
(Desiring, even indeed the three worlds you could restore to life, alas, these dead. What to say again of the beloved one, born, the sister's son, own son, dead.)
If you, desiring, could indeed restore the three worlds to life, alas, these dead—what to say then of the beloved nephew, your own son, who is dead? (14-66-17)
प्रभावज्ञास्मि ते कृष्ण तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीमि ते। कुरुष्व पाण्डुपुत्राणामिमं परमनुग्रहम् ॥१४-६६-१८॥
prabhāvajñāsmi te kṛṣṇa tasmādetad bravīmi te । kuruṣva pāṇḍuputrāṇām imaṁ param anugraham ॥14-66-18॥
[प्रभावज्ञा (prabhāvajñā) - one who knows the power;, अस्मि (asmi) - I am;, ते (te) - to you;, कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa;, तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore;, एतद् (etad) - this;, ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say;, ते (te) - to you;, कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; undertake;, पाण्डुपुत्राणाम् (pāṇḍuputrāṇām) - of the sons of Pāṇḍu;, इमम् (imam) - this;, परम् (param) - supreme; greatest;, अनुग्रहम् (anugraham) - favor; grace;]
(I who know the power am to you, Kṛṣṇa, therefore this I say to you. Do, for the sons of Pāṇḍu, this supreme favor.)
Kṛṣṇa, I know your power; therefore I say this to you: Please grant this supreme favor to the sons of Pāṇḍu. (14-66-18)
स्वसेति वा महाबाहो हतपुत्रेति वा पुनः। प्रपन्ना मामियं वेति दयां कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१४-६६-१९॥
svaseti vā mahābāho hataputreti vā punaḥ. prapannā mām iyaṃ veti dayāṃ kartum ihārhasi ॥14-66-19॥
[स्वसा (svasā) - sister; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; हतपुत्रा (hataputrā) - bereft of her son; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रपन्ना (prapannā) - one who has taken refuge; माम् (mām) - in me; इयं (iyaṃ) - this (woman); वेति (veti) - thus; दयाम् (dayām) - compassion; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought (are worthy);]
(Sister thus or O mighty-armed one, bereft of her son thus or again; who has taken refuge in me, this (woman) thus; compassion to do here you ought.)
Whether as 'sister', O mighty-armed one, or as 'bereft of her son' again; this woman who has sought refuge in me thus—you ought to show compassion here. (14-66-19)
