ततो बहुविधं भीरुर्विलप्य कमलेक्षणा। मुमोह दुःखाद्दुर्धर्षा निपपात च भूतले ॥१४-७९-१॥
tato bahuvidhaṁ bhīrur vilapya kamalekṣaṇā। mumoha duḥkhād durdharṣā nipapāta ca bhūtale ॥14-79-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; बहुविधं (bahuvidham) - in many ways; भीरुः (bhīruḥ) - the fearful one; विलप्य (vilapya) - having lamented; कमलेक्षणा (kamalekṣaṇā) - the lotus-eyed (woman); मुमोह (mumoha) - became unconscious; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from grief; दुर्धर्षा (durdharṣā) - the unassailable one; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; च (ca) - and; भूतले (bhūtale) - on the ground;]
(Then, in many ways, the fearful one, having lamented, the lotus-eyed (woman), became unconscious from grief, the unassailable one, fell down and (lay) on the ground.)
Then, the lotus-eyed (woman), fearful and lamenting in many ways, overcome with grief, lost consciousness and, unassailable as she was, fell to the ground. (14-79-1)
प्रतिलभ्य च सा सञ्ज्ञां देवी दिव्यवपुर्धरा। उलूपीं पन्नगसुतां दृष्ट्वेदं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१४-७९-२॥
pratilabhya ca sā sañjñāṃ devī divyavapur-dharā. ulūpīṃ pannaga-sutāṃ dṛṣṭvedaṃ vākyam abravīt ॥14-79-2॥
[प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having regained; च (ca) - and; सा (sā) - she; सञ्ज्ञाम् (sañjñām) - consciousness; देवी (devī) - the goddess; दिव्यवपुर्धरा (divyavapur-dharā) - possessing a divine body; उलूपीम् (ulūpīm) - Ulūpī; पन्नगसुताम् (pannaga-sutām) - the serpent's daughter; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - she spoke;]
(Having regained consciousness, she, the goddess possessed of a divine body, having seen Ulūpī, the daughter of the serpent, spoke this speech.)
When she regained consciousness, the goddess with the divine form, upon seeing Ulūpī the serpent’s daughter, spoke these words. (14-79-2)
उलूपि पश्य भर्तारं शयानं निहतं रणे। त्वत्कृते मम पुत्रेण बालेन समितिञ्जयम् ॥१४-७९-३॥
ulūpi paśya bhartāraṃ śayānaṃ nihataṃ raṇe। tvatkṛte mama putreṇa bālena samitiñjayam ॥14-79-3॥

Ulupi, look—your husband, the conqueror of battles, lies slain in battle, killed by my son, the boy, for your sake. (14-79-3)
ननु त्वमार्ये धर्मज्ञा ननु चासि पतिव्रता। यत्त्वत्कृतेऽयं पतितः पतिस्ते निहतो रणे ॥१४-७९-४॥
nanu tvam ārye dharmajñā nanu cāsi pativratā। yat tvat-kṛte ayaṃ patitaḥ patiḥ te nihataḥ raṇe ॥14-79-4॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आर्ये (ārye) - O noble lady; धर्मज्ञा (dharmajñā) - knower of dharma; ननु (nanu) - indeed; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; यत् (yat) - because; त्वत्कृते (tvat-kṛte) - for your sake; अयम् (ayam) - this; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; ते (te) - your; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Indeed you, O noble lady, knower of dharma, indeed and you are devoted to your husband; because for your sake, this fallen husband of yours was slain in battle.)
Indeed, O noble lady, you are a knower of dharma and devoted to your husband; because of you, your fallen husband was killed in battle. (14-79-4)
किं तु सर्वापराधोऽयं यदि तेऽद्य धनञ्जयः। क्षमस्व याच्यमाना मे सञ्जीवय धनञ्जयम् ॥१४-७९-५॥
kiṁ tu sarvāparādho'yaṁ yadi te'dya dhanañjayaḥ। kṣamasva yācyamānā me sañjīvaya dhanañjayam ॥14-79-5॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; सर्वापराधः (sarvāparādhaḥ) - all-offenses; अयम् (ayam) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); क्षमस्व (kṣamasva) - forgive; याच्यमाना (yācyamānā) - being entreated; मे (me) - by me; सञ्जीवय (sañjīvaya) - restore to life; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna);]
(But what if this entire offense is by you today, O Dhanañjaya? Forgive, being entreated by me, revive Dhanañjaya.)
But if this whole offense is indeed by you today, O Dhanañjaya, please forgive my plea and revive Dhanañjaya. (14-79-5)
ननु त्वमार्ये धर्मज्ञा त्रैलोक्यविदिता शुभे। यद्घातयित्वा भर्तारं पुत्रेणेह न शोचसि ॥१४-७९-६॥
nanu tva mārye dharmajñā trailokyaviditā śubhe| yadghātayitvā bhartāraṃ putreṇeha na śocasi॥14-79-6॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आर्ये (ārye) - O noble lady; धर्मज्ञा (dharmajñā) - knower of dharma; त्रैलोक्यविदिता (trailokyaviditā) - known in the three worlds; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one; यत् (yat) - who; घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be killed; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - the husband; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by the son; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; शोचसि (śocasi) - you grieve;]
(Indeed, you, O noble lady, knower of dharma, known in the three worlds, O auspicious one, who having caused the husband to be killed by the son here, do not grieve.)
Indeed, O noble and auspicious lady, famed in the three worlds and knower of dharma, you, having caused your husband to be killed by your son here, do not grieve. (14-79-6)
नाहं शोचामि तनयं निहतं पन्नगात्मजे। पतिमेव तु शोचामि यस्यातिथ्यमिदं कृतम् ॥१४-७९-७॥
nāhaṃ śocāmi tanayaṃ nihataṃ pannagātmaje. patimeva tu śocāmi yasyātithyamidaṃ kṛtam ॥14-79-7॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; शोचामि (śocāmi) - grieve; तनयम् (tanayam) - son; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; पन्नगात्मजे (pannagātmaje) - O daughter of the serpent; (vocative singular feminine ending for pannagātmajā: serpent-child, epithet for a nāga princess); पतिम् (patim) - husband; एव (eva) - only; तु (tu) - but; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; यस्य (yasya) - whose; अतिथ्यम् (atithyam) - hospitality; इदम् (idam) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - was done;]
(Not I grieve for the son slain, O daughter of the serpent. But only the husband I grieve, whose hospitality this was done.)
I do not grieve for my son who was slain, O serpent maiden. I grieve only for the husband, for whom this act of hospitality was done. (14-79-7)
इत्युक्त्वा सा तदा देवीमुलूपीं पन्नगात्मजाम्। भर्तारमभिगम्येदमित्युवाच यशस्विनी ॥१४-७९-८॥
ity-uktvā sā tadā devīm ulūpīm pannaga-ātmajām। bhartāram abhigamya idam ity-uvāca yaśasvinī ॥14-79-8॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सा (sā) - she; तदा (tadā) - then; देवीं (devīm) - the goddess; उलूपीं (ulūpīm) - Ulūpī; पन्नगात्मजाम् (pannaga-ātmajām) - serpent-born (daughter of a serpent); भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; अभिगम्य (abhigamya) - having approached; इदम् (idam) - this; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - (she) spoke; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the glorious woman;]
(Having thus spoken, she then, the goddess Ulūpī, daughter of the serpent, having approached her husband, said this thus, the glorious woman.)
Having spoken thus, at that time the goddess Ulūpī, daughter of the serpent, approached her husband and, the glorious lady, said this to him. (14-79-8)
उत्तिष्ठ कुरुमुख्यस्य प्रियकाम मम प्रिय। अयमश्वो महाबाहो मया ते परिमोक्षितः ॥१४-७९-९॥
uttiṣṭha kurumukhyasya priyakāma mama priya. ayam aśvo mahābāho mayā te parimokṣitaḥ ॥14-79-9॥
[उत्तिष्ठ (uttiṣṭha) - arise; कुरुमुख्यस्य (kurumukhyasya) - of the chief of the Kurus; प्रियकाम (priyakāma) - desiring the beloved; मम (mama) - my; प्रिय (priya) - dear one; अयम् (ayam) - this; अश्वः (aśvaḥ) - horse; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (te) - for you; परिमोक्षितः (parimokṣitaḥ) - has been released;]
(Arise, of the chief of the Kurus, desiring the beloved, my dear one. This horse, O mighty-armed, by me, for you, has been released. (14-79-9))
Rise up, my dear, who longs for the chief of the Kurus. O mighty-armed, this horse has been released by me for you. (14-79-9)
ननु नाम त्वया वीर धर्मराजस्य यज्ञियः। अयमश्वोऽनुसर्तव्यः स शेषे किं महीतले ॥१४-७९-१०॥
nanu nāma tvayā vīra dharmarājasya yajñiyaḥ। ayam aśvo'nusartavyaḥ sa śeṣe kiṃ mahī-tale ॥14-79-10॥
[ननु (nanu) - indeed; surely; नाम (nāma) - truly; certainly; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - hero; brave one; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmarāja; यज्ञियः (yajñiyaḥ) - intended for sacrifice; sacrificial; अयम् (ayam) - this; अश्वः (aśvaḥ) - horse; अनुसर्तव्यः (anusartavyaḥ) - should be followed; स (sa) - he; that; शेषे (śeṣe) - remains; किम् (kim) - what; महीतले (mahī-tale) - on the earth;]
(Indeed truly by you, O hero, of Dharmarāja the sacrificial (horse): this horse should be followed, he remains, what (is) on the earth?)
Surely, you, O brave one, must follow this sacrificial horse belonging to Dharmarāja; what else remains to be done on earth? (14-79-10)
त्वयि प्राणाः समायत्ताः कुरूणां कुरुनन्दन। स कस्मात्प्राणदोऽन्येषां प्राणान्सन्त्यक्तवानसि ॥१४-७९-११॥
tvayi prāṇāḥ samāyattāḥ kurūṇāṃ kurunandana। sa kasmāt prāṇado'nyeṣāṃ prāṇān santyaktavān asi ॥14-79-11॥
[त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - lives; vital breaths; समायत्ताः (samāyattāḥ) - depending; centered; कुरूणां (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; स (sa) - he; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; for what reason; प्राणदः (prāṇadaḥ) - giver of life; अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of others; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; सन्त्यक्तवान् (santyaktavān) - has abandoned; has given up; असि (asi) - are; you are;]
(In you, the lives are depending, of the Kurus, O joy of the Kurus. He why, the giver of life, of others, lives, has abandoned, you are.)
O joy of the Kurus, in you the lives of the Kurus are centered. Why, being the giver of life, have you abandoned the lives of others? (14-79-11)
उलूपि साधु सम्पश्य भर्तारं निहतं रणे। पुत्रं चैनं समुत्साह्य घातयित्वा न शोचसि ॥१४-७९-१२॥
ulūpi sādhu sampaśya bhartāraṃ nihataṃ raṇe. putraṃ cainaṃ samutsāhya ghātayitvā na śocasi ॥14-79-12॥
[उलूपि (ulūpi) - Ulūpi; (proper noun, vocative addressing Ulūpi); साधु (sādhu) - well; properly; सम्पश्य (sampaśya) - see; behold; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; killed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this; समुत्साह्य (samutsāhya) - having encouraged; घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be killed; न (na) - not; शोचसि (śocasi) - you grieve;]
(Ulūpi, well see the husband slain in battle. Son and this, having encouraged, having caused to be killed, not you grieve.)
Ulūpi, look well upon your husband slain in battle. Having encouraged this son and caused him to be killed, you do not grieve. (14-79-12)
कामं स्वपितु बालोऽयं भूमौ प्रेतगतिं गतः। लोहिताक्षो गुडाकेशो विजयः साधु जीवतु ॥१४-७९-१३॥
kāmaṃ svapitu bālo'yaṃ bhūmau pretagatiṃ gataḥ। lohitākṣo guḍākeśo vijayaḥ sādhu jīvatu॥14-79-13॥
[कामं (kāmaṃ) - freely; as he pleases; स्वपितु (svapitu) - to sleep; बालः (bālaḥ) - the boy; अयम् (ayam) - this; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; प्रेतगतिम् (pretagatim) - the state of a dead body; गतः (gataḥ) - has taken; लोहिताक्षः (lohitākṣaḥ) - red-eyed one; गुडाकेशः (guḍākeśaḥ) - Guḍākeśa; conqueror of sleep; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya; (Arjuna); साधु (sādhu) - well; good; जीवतु (jīvatu) - let him live;]
(Freely to sleep the boy this on the ground the state of a dead body has taken. The red-eyed one, Guḍākeśa, Vijaya, well, let him live (long). (14-79-13))
Let this boy freely sleep on the ground, having assumed the state of a dead body. The red-eyed one, Guḍākeśa, Vijaya—let him live well. (14-79-13)
नापराधोऽस्ति सुभगे नराणां बहुभार्यता। नारीणां तु भवत्येतन्मा ते भूद्बुद्धिरीदृशी ॥१४-७९-१४॥
nāparādho'sti subhage narāṇāṃ bahubhāryatā। nārīṇāṃ tu bhavatyetan mā te bhūdbuddhirīdṛśī ॥14-79-14॥
[न (na) - not; अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - fault; अस्ति (asti) - exists; सुभगे (subhage) - O fortunate lady; नराणाम् (narāṇām) - of men; बहुभार्यता (bahubhāryatā) - having many wives; नारीणाम् (nārīṇām) - of women; तु (tu) - but; भवति (bhavati) - exists; एतत् (etad) - this; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - your; भूत् (bhūt) - may be; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - thought; ईदृशी (īdṛśī) - such;]
(Not a fault exists, O fortunate lady, for men having many wives; for women, however, this exists; do not let your thought be such.)
O fortunate lady, it is not considered a fault for men to have many wives, but for women it is; do not let your mind entertain such an idea. (14-79-14)
सख्यं ह्येतत्कृतं धात्रा शाश्वतं चाव्ययं च ह। सख्यं समभिजानीहि सत्यं सङ्गतमस्तु ते ॥१४-७९-१५॥
sakhyaṃ hy etat kṛtaṃ dhātrā śāśvataṃ cāvyayaṃ ca ha। sakhyaṃ samabhijānīhi satyaṃ saṅgatam astu te ॥14-79-15॥
[सख्यं (sakhyam) - friendship; हि (hi) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; कृतं (kṛtam) - made; धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the creator; शाश्वतं (śāśvatam) - eternal; च (ca) - and; अव्ययं (avyayam) - imperishable; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; सख्यं (sakhyam) - friendship; समभिजानीहि (samabhijānīhi) - fully recognize; सत्यं (satyam) - true; सङ्गतम् (saṅgatam) - united; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; ते (te) - for you;]
(Friendship indeed this made by the creator eternal and imperishable indeed. Friendship fully recognize true united let it be for you.)
This friendship, indeed, has been made by the creator—eternal and imperishable. Know this friendship well; may true union be yours. (14-79-15)
पुत्रेण घातयित्वेमं पतिं यदि न मेऽद्य वै। जीवन्तं दर्शयस्यद्य परित्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम् ॥१४-७९-१६॥
putreṇa ghātayitvemam patiṃ yadi na me'dya vai। jīvantaṃ darśayasyadya parityakṣyāmi jīvitam ॥14-79-16॥
[पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by the son; by means of the son; घातयित्वा (ghātayitvā) - having caused to be slain; having made to be killed; इमम् (imam) - this; पतिम् (patim) - husband; यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; for me; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; surely; जीवन्तम् (jīvantam) - alive; दर्शयसि (darśayasi) - you show; अद्य (adya) - today; परित्यक्ष्यामि (parityakṣyāmi) - I shall abandon; I will give up; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(By the son, having caused this husband to be slain, if not for me today indeed, alive you show today, I will abandon life.)
If today you do not show my husband alive, having had him slain by the son, indeed I shall give up my life today. (14-79-16)
साहं दुःखान्विता भीरु पतिपुत्रविनाकृता। इहैव प्रायमाशिष्ये प्रेक्षन्त्यास्ते न संशयः ॥१४-७९-१७॥
sāhaṃ duḥkhānvitā bhīru patiputravinākṛtā। ihaiva prāyam āśiṣye prekṣantyāste na saṃśayaḥ ॥14-79-17॥
[सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; दुःखान्विता (duḥkhānvitā) - afflicted with sorrow; भीरु (bhīru) - timid; पतिपुत्रविना (patiputravinā) - bereft of husband and son; कृता (kṛtā) - made; इहैव (ihaiva) - right here; प्रायम् (prāyam) - fast (unto death); आशिष्ये (āśiṣye) - I shall lie down; प्रेक्षन्त्याः (prekṣantyāḥ) - while watching; अस्ते (aste) - she stays; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(She, I, afflicted with sorrow, timid, bereft of husband and son, made; right here, a fast (unto death), I shall lie down; while watching, she stays; not doubt.)
She, being afflicted with sorrow, timid, made bereft of husband and son—I shall lie down here itself in a fast (unto death); there is no doubt that she will keep watching. (14-79-17)
इत्युक्त्वा पन्नगसुतां सपत्नीं चैत्रवाहिनी। ततः प्रायमुपासीना तूष्णीमासीज्जनाधिप ॥१४-७९-१८॥
ity uktvā pannaga-sutāṃ sapatnīṃ caitravāhinī. tataḥ prāyam upāsīnā tūṣṇīm āsīj janādhipa ॥14-79-18॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; पन्नगसुतां (pannaga-sutām) - the serpent's daughter; सपत्नीं (sapatnīṃ) - co-wife; चैत्रवाहिनी (caitravāhinī) - Caitravāhinī; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; प्रायम् (prāyam) - mostly; उपासीना (upāsīnā) - seated; तुष्यीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silently; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - the lord of people;]
(Thus having said to the serpent's daughter, the co-wife Caitravāhinī, then mostly seated silently was the lord of people.)
Having thus addressed the serpent's daughter and her co-wife Caitravāhinī, the lord of people then mostly sat in silence. (14-79-18)
