vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
tato bahuvidhaṁ bhīrur vilapya kamalekṣaṇā। mumoha duḥkhād durdharṣā nipapāta ca bhūtale ॥14-79-1॥
Then, the lotus-eyed (woman), fearful and lamenting in many ways, overcome with grief, lost consciousness and, unassailable as she was, fell to the ground. (14-79-1)
pratilabhya ca sā sañjñāṃ devī divyavapur-dharā. ulūpīṃ pannaga-sutāṃ dṛṣṭvedaṃ vākyam abravīt ॥14-79-2॥
When she regained consciousness, the goddess with the divine form, upon seeing Ulūpī the serpent’s daughter, spoke these words. (14-79-2)
ulūpi paśya bhartāraṃ śayānaṃ nihataṃ raṇe। tvatkṛte mama putreṇa bālena samitiñjayam ॥14-79-3॥
Ulupi, look—your husband, the conqueror of battles, lies slain in battle, killed by my son, the boy, for your sake. (14-79-3)
nanu tvam ārye dharmajñā nanu cāsi pativratā। yat tvat-kṛte ayaṃ patitaḥ patiḥ te nihataḥ raṇe ॥14-79-4॥
Indeed, O noble lady, you are a knower of dharma and devoted to your husband; because of you, your fallen husband was killed in battle. (14-79-4)
kiṁ tu sarvāparādho'yaṁ yadi te'dya dhanañjayaḥ। kṣamasva yācyamānā me sañjīvaya dhanañjayam ॥14-79-5॥
But if this whole offense is indeed by you today, O Dhanañjaya, please forgive my plea and revive Dhanañjaya. (14-79-5)
nanu tva mārye dharmajñā trailokyaviditā śubhe| yadghātayitvā bhartāraṃ putreṇeha na śocasi॥14-79-6॥
Indeed, O noble and auspicious lady, famed in the three worlds and knower of dharma, you, having caused your husband to be killed by your son here, do not grieve. (14-79-6)
nāhaṃ śocāmi tanayaṃ nihataṃ pannagātmaje. patimeva tu śocāmi yasyātithyamidaṃ kṛtam ॥14-79-7॥
I do not grieve for my son who was slain, O serpent maiden. I grieve only for the husband, for whom this act of hospitality was done. (14-79-7)
ity-uktvā sā tadā devīm ulūpīm pannaga-ātmajām। bhartāram abhigamya idam ity-uvāca yaśasvinī ॥14-79-8॥
Having spoken thus, at that time the goddess Ulūpī, daughter of the serpent, approached her husband and, the glorious lady, said this to him. (14-79-8)
uttiṣṭha kurumukhyasya priyakāma mama priya. ayam aśvo mahābāho mayā te parimokṣitaḥ ॥14-79-9॥
Rise up, my dear, who longs for the chief of the Kurus. O mighty-armed, this horse has been released by me for you. (14-79-9)
nanu nāma tvayā vīra dharmarājasya yajñiyaḥ। ayam aśvo'nusartavyaḥ sa śeṣe kiṃ mahī-tale ॥14-79-10॥
Surely, you, O brave one, must follow this sacrificial horse belonging to Dharmarāja; what else remains to be done on earth? (14-79-10)
tvayi prāṇāḥ samāyattāḥ kurūṇāṃ kurunandana। sa kasmāt prāṇado'nyeṣāṃ prāṇān santyaktavān asi ॥14-79-11॥
O joy of the Kurus, in you the lives of the Kurus are centered. Why, being the giver of life, have you abandoned the lives of others? (14-79-11)
ulūpi sādhu sampaśya bhartāraṃ nihataṃ raṇe. putraṃ cainaṃ samutsāhya ghātayitvā na śocasi ॥14-79-12॥
Ulūpi, look well upon your husband slain in battle. Having encouraged this son and caused him to be killed, you do not grieve. (14-79-12)
kāmaṃ svapitu bālo'yaṃ bhūmau pretagatiṃ gataḥ। lohitākṣo guḍākeśo vijayaḥ sādhu jīvatu॥14-79-13॥
Let this boy freely sleep on the ground, having assumed the state of a dead body. The red-eyed one, Guḍākeśa, Vijaya—let him live well. (14-79-13)
nāparādho'sti subhage narāṇāṃ bahubhāryatā। nārīṇāṃ tu bhavatyetan mā te bhūdbuddhirīdṛśī ॥14-79-14॥
O fortunate lady, it is not considered a fault for men to have many wives, but for women it is; do not let your mind entertain such an idea. (14-79-14)
sakhyaṃ hy etat kṛtaṃ dhātrā śāśvataṃ cāvyayaṃ ca ha। sakhyaṃ samabhijānīhi satyaṃ saṅgatam astu te ॥14-79-15॥
This friendship, indeed, has been made by the creator—eternal and imperishable. Know this friendship well; may true union be yours. (14-79-15)
putreṇa ghātayitvemam patiṃ yadi na me'dya vai। jīvantaṃ darśayasyadya parityakṣyāmi jīvitam ॥14-79-16॥
If today you do not show my husband alive, having had him slain by the son, indeed I shall give up my life today. (14-79-16)
sāhaṃ duḥkhānvitā bhīru patiputravinākṛtā। ihaiva prāyam āśiṣye prekṣantyāste na saṃśayaḥ ॥14-79-17॥
She, being afflicted with sorrow, timid, made bereft of husband and son—I shall lie down here itself in a fast (unto death); there is no doubt that she will keep watching. (14-79-17)
ity uktvā pannaga-sutāṃ sapatnīṃ caitravāhinī. tataḥ prāyam upāsīnā tūṣṇīm āsīj janādhipa ॥14-79-18॥
Having thus addressed the serpent's daughter and her co-wife Caitravāhinī, the lord of people then mostly sat in silence. (14-79-18)
