तथा विलप्योपरता भर्तुः पादौ प्रगृह्य सा। उपविष्टाभवद्देवी सोच्छ्वासं पुत्रमीक्षती ॥१४-८०-१॥
tathā vilapyoparatā bhartuḥ pādau pragṛhya sā। upaviṣṭābhavaddevī socchvāsaṁ putramīkṣatī ॥14-80-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; विलप्य (vilapya) - having lamented; उपरता (uparatā) - ceased; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; पादौ (pādau) - feet; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having grasped; सा (sā) - she; उपविष्टा (upaviṣṭā) - seated; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; देवी (devī) - the lady; सोच्छ्वासं (socchvāsaṁ) - with sighing; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; ईक्षती (īkṣatī) - looking at;]
(Thus, having lamented, ceased, of the husband, feet, having grasped, she, seated, became, the lady, with sighing, son, looking at.)
Thus, having ceased lamenting, she grasped her husband's feet, and the lady sat down, sighing, looking at her son. (14-80-1)
ततः सञ्ज्ञां पुनर्लब्ध्वा स राजा बभ्रुवाहनः। मातरं तामथालोक्य रणभूमावथाब्रवीत् ॥१४-८०-२॥
tataḥ sañjñām punar labdhvā sa rājā babhruvāhanaḥ. mātaraṃ tām athālokya raṇabhūmau athābravīt ॥14-80-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सञ्ज्ञां (sañjñām) - consciousness; पुनः (punar) - again; लभ्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; बभ्रुवाहनः (babhruvāhanaḥ) - Babhruvāhana; मातरम् (mātaram) - mother (acc.); ताम् (tām) - her; अथ (atha) - then; आलोक्य (ālokya) - having seen; रणभूमौ (raṇabhūmau) - on the battlefield; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said;]
(Then, having regained consciousness again, the king Babhruvāhana, having seen his mother there on the battlefield, then said (to her).)
Then, regaining consciousness, King Babhruvāhana looked at his mother on the battlefield and spoke to her. (14-80-2)
इतो दुःखतरं किं नु यन्मे माता सुखैधिता। भूमौ निपतितं वीरमनुशेते मृतं पतिम् ॥१४-८०-३॥
ito duḥkhataraṃ kiṃ nu yanme mātā sukhaidhitā। bhūmau nipatitaṃ vīramanuśete mṛtaṃ patim ॥14-80-3॥
[इतो (ito) - than this; दुःखतरं (duḥkhataraṃ) - more wretched; किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; यत् (yat) - that; मे (me) - my; माता (mātā) - mother; सुखैधिता (sukhaidhitā) - longing for happiness; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निपतितं (nipatitaṃ) - fallen; वीरम् (vīram) - hero; अनुशेते (anuśete) - lies down beside; मृतं (mṛtaṃ) - dead; पतिम् (patim) - (her) husband;]
(Than this more wretched what indeed that my mother, longing for happiness, on the ground fallen hero lies down beside, dead husband.)
Is there anything more sorrowful than this, that my mother, longing for happiness, lies down beside her dead husband, the fallen hero, on the ground? (14-80-3)
निहन्तारं रणेऽरीणां सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम्। मया विनिहतं सङ्ख्ये प्रेक्षते दुर्मरं बत ॥१४-८०-४॥
nihantāraṃ raṇe'rīṇāṃ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varam। mayā vinihataṃ saṅkhye prekṣate durmaraṃ bata ॥14-80-4॥
[निहन्तारं (nihantāram) - destroyer; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अरीणां (arīṇām) - of enemies; सर्वशस्त्रभृतां (sarvaśastrabhṛtām) - of all bearers of weapons; वरम् (varam) - the best; मया (mayā) - by me; विनिहतम् (vinihatam) - slain; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in combat; प्रेक्षते (prekṣate) - he beholds; दुर्मरम् (durmaram) - difficult to kill; बत (bata) - alas;]
(Destroyer in battle of enemies, the best of all bearers of weapons, by me slain in combat, he beholds difficult to kill, alas.)
Alas! The destroyer of enemies in battle, the foremost among all wielders of weapons, whom I have slain in combat, he beholds—so hard to kill. (14-80-4)
अहोऽस्या हृदयं देव्या दृढं यन्न विदीर्यते। व्यूढोरस्कं महाबाहुं प्रेक्षन्त्या निहतं पतिम् ॥१४-८०-५॥
aho'syā hṛdayaṃ devyā dṛḍhaṃ yan na vidīryate। vyūḍhoraskaṃ mahābāhuṃ prekṣantyā nihataṃ patim॥14-80-5॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; अस्या (asyāḥ) - her; हृदयं (hṛdayam) - heart; देव्या (devyā) - of the queen; दृढं (dṛḍham) - firm; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; विदीर्यते (vidīryate) - is torn; व्यूढोरस्कं (vyūḍhoraskam) - broad-chested; महाबाहुं (mahābāhum) - mighty-armed; प्रेक्षन्त्या (prekṣantyā) - while beholding; निहतं (nihatam) - slain; पतिम् (patim) - husband;]
(Alas, her heart, of the queen, firm which is not torn, the broad-chested, mighty-armed, while beholding, slain husband.)
Alas! How firm is the heart of this queen, that it is not torn as she beholds her broad-chested, mighty-armed husband lying slain. (14-80-5)
दुर्मरं पुरुषेणेह मन्ये ह्यध्वन्यनागते। यत्र नाहं न मे माता विप्रयुज्येत जीवितात् ॥१४-८०-६॥
durmaraṃ puruṣeṇeha manye hyadhvanyanāgate। yatra nāhaṃ na me mātā viprayujyeta jīvitāt॥14-80-6॥
[दुर्मरं (durmaram) - hard to bear; difficult to endure; पुरुषेण (puruṣeṇa) - by a man; इह (iha) - here; in this world; मन्ये (manye) - I think; I consider; हि (hi) - indeed; अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the path; अनागते (anāgate) - not yet come; unreached; still to come; यत्र (yatra) - where; न (na) - not; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; to me; माता (mātā) - mother; विप्रयुज्येत (viprayujyeta) - would be separated; जीवितात् (jīvitāt) - from life; from existence;]
(I think it is hard to bear by a man here indeed, on the path not yet come, where neither I nor my mother would be separated from life.)
I think that, for a man here, it will be truly hard to endure the journey ahead, where neither I nor my mother would be parted from life. (14-80-6)
अहो धिक्कुरुवीरस्य ह्युरःस्थं काञ्चनं भुवि। व्यपविद्धं हतस्येह मया पुत्रेण पश्यत ॥१४-८०-७॥
aho dhikkuru-vīrasya hyuraḥsthaṁ kāñcanaṁ bhuvi। vyapaviddhaṁ hatasya iha mayā putreṇa paśyata ॥14-80-7॥
[अहो (aho) - ah; धिक् (dhik) - shame; कुरुवीरस्य (kuru-vīrasya) - of the Kuru hero; हि (hi) - indeed; उरःस्थं (uraḥstham) - which was on the chest; काञ्चनं (kāñcanam) - gold; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; व्यपविद्धं (vyapaviddham) - cast aside; हतस्य (hatasya) - of the slain; इह (iha) - here; मया (mayā) - by me; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by (my) son; पश्यत (paśyata) - look;]
(Ah, shame! Of the Kuru hero indeed the gold which was on (his) chest on the ground cast aside of the slain here by me, by (my) son, look.)
Ah, shame! See here the gold that was on the chest of the slain Kuru hero, indeed, cast aside on the ground by my son and me. (14-80-7)
भो भो पश्यत मे वीरं पितरं ब्राह्मणा भुवि। शयानं वीरशयने मया पुत्रेण पातितम् ॥१४-८०-८॥
bho bho paśyata me vīraṃ pitaraṃ brāhmaṇā bhuvi। śayānaṃ vīraśayane mayā putreṇa pātitam॥14-80-8॥
[भो भो (bho bho) - O O; (vocative particle of calling); पश्यत (paśyata) - see; behold; मे (me) - my; of me; वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; warrior; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; ब्राह्मणा (brāhmaṇā) - O Brāhmaṇas; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; शयानं (śayānaṃ) - lying; sleeping; वीरशयने (vīraśayane) - on a hero’s couch; on a warrior’s bed; मया (mayā) - by me; पुत्रेण (putreṇa) - by son; by the son; पातितम् (pātitam) - fallen; made to fall; slain;]
(O O, see my hero father, O Brāhmaṇas, on earth, lying on a hero’s bed, by me, by the son, fallen.)
O O, Brāhmaṇas, behold my heroic father fallen on the earth, lying on a warrior’s bed, slain by me, his own son. (14-80-8)
ब्राह्मणाः कुरुमुख्यस्य प्रयुक्ता हयसारिणः। कुर्वन्तु शान्तिकां त्वद्य रणे योऽयं मया हतः ॥१४-८०-९॥
brāhmaṇāḥ kurumukhyasya prayuktā hayasāriṇaḥ। kurvantu śāntikāṃ tvadya raṇe yo'yaṃ mayā hataḥ॥14-80-9॥
[ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; कुरुमुख्यस्य (kurumukhyasya) - of the chief of the Kurus; प्रयुक्ता (prayuktā) - appointed; हयसारिणः (hayasāriṇaḥ) - charioteers; कुर्वन्तु (kurvantu) - may they perform; शान्तिकाम् (śāntikām) - a peace-rite; त्वद् (tva) - today; अद्य (adya) - today; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; हतः (hataḥ) - killed;]
(Brāhmaṇas, of the chief of the Kurus, appointed charioteers; may they perform the peace-rite today, in battle, who this by me killed.)
Let the Brāhmaṇas and the charioteers appointed by the chief of the Kurus perform peace-rites today for this one who has been killed by me in battle. (14-80-9)
व्यादिशन्तु च किं विप्राः प्रायश्चित्तमिहाद्य मे। सुनृशंसस्य पापस्य पितृहन्तू रणाजिरे ॥१४-८०-१०॥
vyādiśantu ca kiṁ viprāḥ prāyaścittam ihādya me। sunṛśaṁsasya pāpasya pitṛhantū raṇājire ॥14-80-10॥
[व्यादिशन्तु (vyādiśantu) - let them prescribe; च (ca) - and; किं (kiṁ) - what; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; प्रायश्चित्तम् (prāyaścittam) - expiation; इह (iha) - here; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - for me; सुनृशंसस्य (sunṛśaṁsasya) - of the heinous; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of the sin; पितृहन्तुः (pitṛhantuḥ) - of the father-killer; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - on the battlefield;]
(Let the Brāhmaṇas here today prescribe what expiation for me, of the heinous sin of the father-killer on the battlefield.)
Let the Brāhmaṇas here today prescribe what expiation there is for me, a perpetrator of the heinous sin of killing a father on the battlefield. (14-80-10)
दुश्चरा द्वादश समा हत्वा पितरमद्य वै। ममेह सुनृशंसस्य संवीतस्यास्य चर्मणा ॥१४-८०-११॥
duścarā dvādaśa samā hatvā pitaram adya vai। mama iha sunṛśaṁsasya saṁvītasya asya carmaṇā ॥14-80-11॥
[दुश्चरा (duścarā) - difficult to endure; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; समा (samā) - years; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; पितरम् (pitaram) - father; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; इह (iha) - here; सुनृशंसस्य (sunṛśaṁsasya) - of the cruel one; संवीतस्य (saṁvītasya) - of the one covered; अस्य (asya) - of this; चर्मणा (carmaṇā) - with skin;]
(Difficult to endure twelve years, having killed (my) father today indeed; here, with the skin of this cruel one who is covered, of mine.)
After having endured the unbearable twelve years and slain my father today, here I am, with the skin of this cruel one who is thus covered, now belonging to me. (14-80-11)
शिरःकपाले चास्यैव भुञ्जतः पितुरद्य मे। प्रायश्चित्तं हि नास्त्यन्यद्धत्वाद्य पितरं मम ॥१४-८०-१२॥
śiraḥ-kapāle ca asya eva bhuñjataḥ pituḥ adya me। prāyaścittaṃ hi nāsti anyat dhatvā adya pitaraṃ mama॥14-80-12॥
[शिरःकपाले (śiraḥ-kapāle) - on the skull; च (ca) - and; स्यैव (asya eva) - of him indeed; भुञ्जतः (bhuñjataḥ) - eating; पितुर् (pituḥ) - of father; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - for me; प्रायश्चित्तं (prāyaścittam) - atonement; हि (hi) - indeed; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; हत्वा (dhatvā) - having killed; अद्य (adya) - today; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; मम (mama) - my;]
(On the skull and of him indeed eating, of father, today, for me, atonement indeed there is not other, having killed today father my.)
Today, as I eat from the skull of my own father, there is indeed no other atonement for me, having killed my father. (14-80-12)
पश्य नागोत्तमसुते भर्तारं निहतं मया। कृतं प्रियं मया तेऽद्य निहत्य समरेऽर्जुनम् ॥१४-८०-१३॥
paśya nāgottamasute bhartāraṃ nihataṃ mayā। kṛtaṃ priyaṃ mayā te'dya nihatya samare'rjunam ॥14-80-13॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; नागोत्तमसुते (nāgottamasute) - O son of the best of Nāgas; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; निहतं (nihataṃ) - slain; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; प्रियं (priyaṃ) - dear; मया (mayā) - by me; ते (te) - for you; अद्य (adya) - today; निहत्य (nihatya) - by slaying; समरे (samare) - in battle; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna;]
(See, O son of the best of Nāgas, your husband slain by me. That dear thing for you has been done by me today by slaying Arjuna in battle.)
See, O son of the best of Nāgas, your husband has been slain by me. I have done what is dear to you today by killing Arjuna in battle. (14-80-13)
सोऽहमप्यद्य यास्यामि गतिं पितृनिषेविताम्। न शक्नोम्यात्मनात्मानमहं धारयितुं शुभे ॥१४-८०-१४॥
so'hamapyadya yāsyāmi gatiṃ pitṛniṣevitām। na śaknomyātmanātmānamahaṃ dhārayituṃ śubhe॥14-80-14॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; अद्य (adya) - today; यास्यामि (yāsyāmi) - I shall go; गतिम् (gatim) - the path; पितृ-निषेविताम् (pitṛ-niṣevitām) - attended by forefathers; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by (my) self; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; अहम् (aham) - I; धारयितुम् (dhārayitum) - to uphold; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious (one);]
(He I also today shall go the path attended by forefathers. Not I am able by (my) self the self I to uphold, O auspicious (one).)
I too, today, shall go along the path attended by the forefathers. I am not able by myself to uphold my own self, O auspicious one. (14-80-14)
सा त्वं मयि मृते मातस्तथा गाण्डीवधन्वनि। भव प्रीतिमती देवि सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥१४-८०-१५॥
sā tvaṃ mayi mṛte mātastathā gāṇḍīvadhanvani। bhava prītimatī devi satyenātmānam ālabhe ॥14-80-15॥
[सा (sā) - she; (here: you;) ; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; (as for you;) ; मयि (mayi) - when I; in me; ; मृते (mṛte) - have died; (am dead;) ; मातः (mātaḥ) - O mother; ; तथा (tathā) - thus; in like manner; ; गाण्डीवधन्वनि (gāṇḍīvadhanvani) - in the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow; (i.e., Arjuna;) ; भव (bhava) - become; (you should be;) ; प्रीतिमती (prītimatī) - full of affection; affectionate; ; देवि (devi) - O goddess; O lady; ; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; truly; ; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; (the self;) ; आलभे (ālabhe) - I claim; I invoke; I take hold of; ;]
(She, you, when I have died, O mother, thus in the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, become affectionate, O goddess; by truth I claim myself.)
O mother, if I die, you — who are the very goddess — should show affection equally to the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow. Truly, by this truth, I pledge myself. (14-80-15)
इत्युक्त्वा स तदा राजा दुःखशोकसमाहतः। उपस्पृश्य महाराज दुःखाद्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४-८०-१६॥
ity uktvā sa tadā rājā duḥkhaśokasamāhataḥ। upaspṛśya mahārāja duḥkhād vacanam abravīt॥14-80-16॥
[इति (ity) (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) (uktvā) - having said; स (sa) (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) (tadā) - then; राजा (rājā) (rājā) - the king; दुःखशोकसमाहतः (duḥkhaśokasamāhataḥ) (duḥkhaśokasamāhataḥ) - afflicted by sorrow and grief; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) (upaspṛśya) - having touched (water, i.e. having purified himself); महाराज (mahārāja) (mahārāja) - O great king; दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) (duḥkhāt) - from grief; वचनम् (vacanam) (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus having said, he then, the king, afflicted by sorrow and grief, having purified himself, O great king, from grief, speech spoke.)
Having thus spoken, the king, overcome by sorrow and grief, purified himself and, O great king, spoke these words out of his grief. (14-80-16)
शृण्वन्तु सर्वभूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च। त्वं च मातर्यथा सत्यं ब्रवीमि भुजगोत्तमे ॥१४-८०-१७॥
śṛṇvantu sarvabhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca. tvaṃ ca mātar yathā satyaṃ bravīmi bhujagottame ॥14-80-17॥
[शृण्वन्तु (śṛṇvantu) - let hear; (imperative, 3rd pl., root 'śru'-to hear); सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immobile beings; चराणि (carāṇi) - mobile beings; च (ca) - and; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; मातर् (mātar) - O mother; यथा (yathā) - just as; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I speak; (1st sg. pres. of 'brū'); भुजगोत्तमे (bhujagottame) - O best of serpents;]
(Let all beings, immobile and mobile, hear; and you, O mother, just as (it is) truth, I speak, O best of serpents.)
Let all beings, both immobile and mobile, listen; you too, O mother, I speak the truth just as it is, O best of serpents. (14-80-17)
यदि नोत्तिष्ठति जयः पिता मे भरतर्षभः। अस्मिन्नेव रणोद्देशे शोषयिष्ये कलेवरम् ॥१४-८०-१८॥
yadi nottiṣṭhati jayaḥ pitā me bharatarṣabhaḥ। asminneva raṇoddeśe śoṣayiṣye kalevaram ॥14-80-18॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; न (na) - not; उत्तिष्ठति (uttiṣṭhati) - rises (up from); जयः (jayaḥ) - Jaya (proper noun, name of the slain, i.e., his brother); पिता (pitā) - father; मे (me) - my; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - best among the Bharatas; अस्मिन्नेव (asmin eva) - in this very; रणोद्देशे (raṇoddeśe) - field of battle; शोषयिष्ये (śoṣayiṣye) - I shall dry up (destroy); कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body;]
(If not rises Jaya, my father, best among the Bharatas, in this very field of battle, I will destroy (dry up) the body.)
If my father Jaya, best among the Bharatas, does not rise in this very battlefield, I shall destroy my body here. (14-80-18)
न हि मे पितरं हत्वा निष्कृतिर्विद्यते क्वचित्। नरकं प्रतिपत्स्यामि ध्रुवं गुरुवधार्दितः ॥१४-८०-१९॥
na hi me pitaraṃ hatvā niṣkṛtir vidyate kvacit। narakaṃ pratipatsyāmi dhruvaṃ guru-vadhā-arditaḥ ॥14-80-19॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - for me; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - father; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; निष्कृति: (niṣkṛtiḥ) - redemption; विद्यते (vidyate) - is found; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere; नरकं (narakaṃ) - hell; प्रतिपत्स्यामि (pratipatsyāmi) - I shall attain; ध्रुवं (dhruvam) - certainly; गुरुवधार्दितः (guru-vadhā-arditaḥ) - distressed by the slaying of a teacher;]
(Not indeed for me, having killed father, redemption is found anywhere; hell I shall attain certainly, distressed by the slaying of a teacher.)
Indeed, there is no redemption for me anywhere if I kill my father; surely, afflicted by the slaying of my teacher, I shall attain hell. (14-80-19)
वीरं हि क्षत्रियं हत्वा गोशतेन प्रमुच्यते। पितरं तु निहत्यैवं दुस्तरा निष्कृतिर्मया ॥१४-८०-२०॥
vīraṃ hi kṣatriyaṃ hatvā gośatena pramucyate। pitaraṃ tu nihatyaivaṃ dustarā niṣkṛtir mayā॥14-80-20॥
[वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; हि (hi) - indeed; क्षत्रियं (kṣatriyaṃ) - kṣatriya (warrior); हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; गोशतेन (gośatena) - with the gift of a hundred cows; प्रमुच्यते (pramucyate) - is released; liberated; पितरं (pitaraṃ) - (one's) father; तु (tu) - but; however; निहत्या (nihatyā) - having killed; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this manner; दुस्तरा (dustarā) - difficult to overcome; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - expiation; atonement; मया (mayā) - for me; by me;]
(Indeed, having killed a kṣatriya hero, one is released by the gift of a hundred cows. But having killed (one's) father thus, the expiation is difficult to overcome for me.)
For killing a heroic kṣatriya, one is indeed freed by offering a hundred cows; but for killing my father in this way, the atonement is extremely difficult for me to accomplish. (14-80-20)
एष ह्येको महातेजाः पाण्डुपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। पिता च मम धर्मात्मा तस्य मे निष्कृतिः कुतः ॥१४-८०-२१॥
eṣa hy eko mahātejāḥ pāṇḍu-putro dhanañjayaḥ। pitā ca mama dharmātmā tasya me niṣkṛtiḥ kutaḥ॥14-80-21॥
[एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; पाण्डुपुत्रः (pāṇḍu-putraḥ) - son of Pāṇḍu; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); पिता (pitā) - father; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - my; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous soul; तस्य (tasya) - his; मे (me) - to me; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - atonement; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where;]
(This indeed alone, of great brilliance, son of Pāṇḍu, Dhanañjaya. Father also my, righteous soul; his to me atonement from where?)
This Dhanañjaya, son of Pāṇḍu, alone is indeed of great brilliance. My father too was a righteous soul; how can I atone to him? (14-80-21)
इत्येवमुक्त्वा नृपते धनञ्जयसुतो नृपः। उपस्पृश्याभवत्तूष्णीं प्रायोपेतो महामतिः ॥१४-८०-२२॥
ityevam uktvā nṛpate dhanañjayasuto nṛpaḥ। upaspṛśyābhavat tūṣṇīṃ prāyo’peto mahāmatiḥ॥14-80-22॥
[इति एवम् (iti evam) - thus; in this way; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; धनञ्जयसुतः (dhanañjaya-sutaḥ) - son of Dhanañjaya; (i.e., Abhimanyu or Parīkṣit); नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched (water, as a rite); अभवत् (abhavat) - became; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; प्रायः उपेतः (prāyaḥ upetaḥ) - undertaking a fast unto death; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - one of great wisdom;]
(Thus having spoken, O king, the son of Dhanañjaya, the king, having touched (water), became silent, undertaking a fast unto death, (he was) one of great wisdom.)
Having said this, O king, the son of Dhanañjaya, the king of great wisdom, performed the rite of touching water, became silent, and, undertaking a fast unto death, remained so. (14-80-22)
