समागतान्वेदविदो राज्ञश्च पृथिवीश्वरान्। दृष्ट्वा युधिष्ठिरो राजा भीमसेनमथाब्रवीत् ॥१४-८८-१॥
samāgatān vedavido rājñaś ca pṛthivīśvarān। dṛṣṭvā yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bhīmasenam athābravīt ॥14-88-1॥
[समागतान् (samāgatān) - assembled; वेदविदः (vedavidaḥ) - knowers of the Vedas; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - kings; च (ca) - and; पृथिवीश्वरान् (pṛthivīśvarān) - lords of the earth; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; राजा (rājā) - king; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having seen the assembled knowers of the Vedas and the kings, lords of the earth, Yudhiṣṭhira the king then said to Bhīmasena.)
Seeing the assembled Vedic scholars and kings, rulers of the earth, King Yudhiṣṭhira then spoke to Bhīmasena. (14-88-1)
उपयाता नरव्याघ्रा य इमे जगदीश्वराः। एतेषां क्रियतां पूजा पूजार्हा हि नरेश्वराः ॥१४-८८-२॥
upayātā naravyāghrā ya ime jagadīśvarāḥ। eteṣāṃ kriyatāṃ pūjā pūjārhā hi nareśvarāḥ॥14-88-2॥
[उपयाता (upayātā) - have arrived; नरव्याघ्राः (naravyāghrāḥ) - tiger among men; य (ya) - who; इमे (ime) - these; जगदीश्वराः (jagadīśvarāḥ) - lords of the world; एतेषां (eteṣāṃ) - for these; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let be done; पूजा (pūjā) - worship; पूजार्हाः (pūjārhāḥ) - worthy of worship; हि (hi) - indeed; नरेश्वराः (nareśvarāḥ) - lords among men;]
(Have arrived tigers among men, who these lords of the world. For these let worship be done, worthy of worship indeed lords among men.)
These tigers among men, the lords of the world, have arrived. Let worship be performed for these, for the lords among men are indeed worthy of worship. (14-88-2)
इत्युक्तः स तथा चक्रे नरेन्द्रेण यशस्विना। भीमसेनो महातेजा यमाभ्यां सह भारत ॥१४-८८-३॥

(Thus spoken, he thus did by the illustrious king; Bhīmasena, of great energy, with the two sons of Yama, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, thus addressed by the illustrious king, Bhīmasena, of great energy, acted accordingly together with the two sons of Yama. (14-88-3)
अथाभ्यगच्छद्गोविन्दो वृष्णिभिः सह धर्मजम्। बलदेवं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वप्राणभृतां वरः ॥१४-८८-४॥
athābhyagacchad govindo vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha dharmajam। baladevaṃ puraskṛtya sarvapraṇabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥14-88-4॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अभ्यगच्छत् (abhyagacchat) - approached; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; वृष्णिभिः (vṛṣṇibhiḥ) - with the Vṛṣṇis (the Vṛṣṇi clan); सह (saha) - together with; धर्मजम् (dharmajam) - Dharmaja (born of Dharma, i.e., Yudhiṣṭhira); बलदेवं (baladevaṃ) - Baladeva (Balarāma); पुरस्कृत्य (puraskṛtya) - placing in front; सर्वप्राणभृताम् (sarvaprāṇabhṛtām) - of all living beings; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Then Govinda approached together with the Vṛṣṇis, placing Baladeva in front, to Dharmaja, the best of all living beings.)
Then Govinda, with the Vṛṣṇis and having Baladeva at the fore, approached Dharmaja, the foremost of all living beings. (14-88-4)
युयुधानेन सहितः प्रद्युम्नेन गदेन च। निशठेनाथ साम्बेन तथैव कृतवर्मणा ॥१४-८८-५॥
yuyudhānena sahitaḥ pradyumnena gadena ca। niśaṭhenātha sāmbena tathaiva kṛtavarmaṇā ॥14-88-5॥

तेषामपि परां पूजां चक्रे भीमो महाभुजः। विविशुस्ते च वेश्मानि रत्नवन्ति नरर्षभाः ॥१४-८८-६॥
teṣām api parāṃ pūjāṃ cakre bhīmo mahābhujaḥ। viviśus te ca veśmāni ratnavanti nararṣabhāḥ॥14-88-6॥
[तेषाम् अपि (teṣām api) - to them also; पराम् (parām) - supreme; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honor; चक्रे (cakre) - performed; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - great-armed; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; ते च (te ca) - they also; वेश्मानि (veśmāni) - mansions; रत्नवन्ति (ratnavanti) - adorned with jewels; नरर्षभाः (nararṣabhāḥ) - bulls among men;]
(To them also supreme honor performed Bhīma, great-armed; they also entered mansions adorned with jewels, bulls among men.)
Bhīma of mighty arms performed the highest honor to them too, and those foremost among men entered the jewel-studded mansions. (14-88-6)
युधिष्ठिरसमीपे तु कथान्ते मधुसूदनः। अर्जुनं कथयामास बहुसङ्ग्रामकर्शितम् ॥१४-८८-७॥
yudhiṣṭhira-samīpe tu kathā-ante madhusūdanaḥ। arjunaṃ kathayām āsa bahu-saṅgrāma-karśitam॥14-88-7॥
[युधिष्ठिरसमीपे (yudhiṣṭhira-samīpe) - near Yudhiṣṭhira; in the presence of Yudhiṣṭhira; तु (tu) - but; however; कथान्ते (kathā-ante) - at the end of the conversation; मधुसूदनः (madhusūdanaḥ) - Madhusūdana; slayer of Madhu; (an epithet of Kṛṣṇa); अर्जुनं (arjunaṃ) - Arjuna; (accusative singular); कथयामास (kathayām āsa) - spoke about; told; बहुसङ्ग्रामकर्शितम् (bahu-saṅgrāma-karśitam) - much-battle-worn; worn out by many battles;]
(Near Yudhiṣṭhira, however, at the end of the conversation, Madhusūdana spoke about Arjuna, much-battle-worn.)
But at the end of the conversation, in the presence of Yudhiṣṭhira, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) spoke about Arjuna, who was worn out by many battles. (14-88-7)
स तं पप्रच्छ कौन्तेयः पुनः पुनररिंदमम्। धर्मराड्भ्रातरं जिष्णुं समाचष्ट जगत्पतिः ॥१४-८८-८॥
sa taṃ papraccha kaunteyaḥ punaḥ punar ariṃ-damam । dharma-rāḍ-bhrātaraṃ jiṣṇuṃ samācaṣṭa jagat-patiḥ ॥14-88-8॥

(He asked him, Kaunteya, again and again, the conqueror of enemies. The lord of the world reported about Jiṣṇu, the brother of Dharmarāj.)
Again and again Kaunteya (Arjuna), the conqueror of enemies, asked him. The lord of the world (Krishna) recounted about Jiṣṇu, the brother of Dharmarāj (Yudhiṣṭhira). (14-88-8)
आगमद्द्वारकावासी ममाप्तः पुरुषो नृप। योऽद्राक्षीत्पाण्डवश्रेष्ठं बहुसङ्ग्रामकर्शितम् ॥१४-८८-९॥
āgamad-dvārakāvāsī mamāptaḥ puruṣo nṛpa। yo'drākṣīt-pāṇḍava-śreṣṭhaṃ bahu-saṅgrāma-karśitam ॥14-88-9॥
[आगमत् (āgamat) - came; द्वारका-वासी (dvārakā-vāsī) - one dwelling in Dvārakā; मम (mama) - my; आप्तः (āptaḥ) - trusted; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; यः (yaḥ) - who; अद्राक्षीत् (adrākṣīt) - saw; पाण्डव-श्रेष्ठम् (pāṇḍava-śreṣṭham) - the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas; बहु-सङ्ग्राम-कर्शितम् (bahu-saṅgrāma-karśitam) - worn out by many battles;]
(O king, my trusted man, dwelling in Dvārakā, came; who saw the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas, worn out by many battles.)
O king, my trusted man, a resident of Dvārakā, came—he who had seen the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas, worn out by many battles. (14-88-9)
समीपे च महाबाहुमाचष्ट च मम प्रभो। कुरु कार्याणि कौन्तेय हयमेधार्थसिद्धये ॥१४-८८-१०॥
samīpe ca mahābāhum ācaṣṭa ca mama prabho। kuru kāryāṇi kaunteya hayamedhārthasiddhaye ॥14-88-10॥

(Near and O mighty-armed, told and to me, O lord. Perform actions, O son of Kunti, for attainment of the purpose of the horse sacrifice. (14-88-10))
O mighty-armed, one spoke to me nearby, O lord. Perform the tasks, O son of Kunti, for the accomplishment of the horse sacrifice. (14-88-10)
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचैनं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। दिष्ट्या स कुशली जिष्णुरुपयाति च माधव ॥१४-८८-११॥
ity uktaḥ pratyuvāca enaṃ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। diṣṭyā sa kuśalī jiṣṇur upayāti ca mādhava ॥14-88-11॥

(Thus addressed, Dharmaraja Yudhishthira replied to him: By fortune, the conqueror is well and approaches, O Madhava. (14-88-11))
Thus, when addressed, Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, replied: By good fortune, Jiṣṇu is well and is coming, O Mādhava. (14-88-11)
तव यत्संदिदेशासौ पाण्डवानां बलाग्रणीः। तदाख्यातुमिहेच्छामि भवता यदुनन्दन ॥१४-८८-१२॥
tava yat saṁdideśāsau pāṇḍavānāṁ balāgraṇīḥ। tad ākhyātum ihecchāmi bhavatā yadunandana॥14-88-12॥
[तव (tava) - of you; यत् (yat) - which; संदिदेश (saṁdideśa) - commanded; असौ (asau) - he; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; बलाग्रणीः (balāgraṇīḥ) - leader of the army; तत् (tat) - that; आख्यातुम् (ākhyātum) - to tell; इह (iha) - here; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; भवता (bhavatā) - by you; यदुनन्दन (yadunandana) - O descendant of Yadu;]
(Of you, which commanded he, of the Pāṇḍavas the leader of the army, that to tell here I wish by you, O descendant of Yadu.)
O descendant of Yadu, I wish that you tell me here what the leader of the army of the Pāṇḍavas, whom you commanded, did. (14-88-12)
इत्युक्ते राजशार्दूल वृष्ण्यन्धकपतिस्तदा। प्रोवाचेदं वचो वाग्मी धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१४-८८-१३॥
ityukte rājaśārdūla vṛṣṇy-andhaka-patis tadā। provācedaṁ vaco vāgmī dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥14-88-13॥
[इति-उक्ते (iti-ukte) - when thus spoken; राज-शार्दूल (rāja-śārdūla) - O tiger among kings; वृष्ण्य्-अन्धक-पतिः (vṛṣṇy-andhaka-patiḥ) - the lord of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रोवाच (provāca) - spoke; इदं (idaṁ) - these; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; वाग्मी (vāgmī) - eloquent one; धर्मात्मानम् (dharmātmānam) - righteous-souled; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - to Yudhishthira;]
(When thus spoken, O tiger among kings, the lord of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas then spoke these words, the eloquent one, to righteous-souled Yudhishthira.)
When these words were spoken, O tiger among kings, the eloquent lord of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas then addressed these words to righteous-souled Yudhishthira. (14-88-13)
इदमाह महाराज पार्थवाक्यं नरः स माम्। वाच्यो युधिष्ठिरः कृष्ण काले वाक्यमिदं मम ॥१४-८८-१४॥
idam āha mahārāja pārthavākyaṃ naraḥ sa mām। vācyo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛṣṇa kāle vākyam idaṃ mama ॥14-88-14॥
[इदं (idam) - this; आह (āha) - said; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पार्थवाक्यं (pārthavākyaṃ) - the words of Pārtha; नरः (naraḥ) - the man; स (sa) - he; माम् (mām) - to me; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should say; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - O Kṛṣṇa; काले (kāle) - at the (right) time; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; इदं (idaṃ) - this; मम (mama) - my;]
(This said, O great king, the words of Pārtha, the man, he to me; Yudhiṣṭhira, O Kṛṣṇa, should say at the time this statement of mine.)
O great king, this man spoke to me these words of Pārtha; Yudhiṣṭhira, O Kṛṣṇa, should say this statement of mine at the appointed time. (14-88-14)
आगमिष्यन्ति राजानः सर्वतः कौरवान्प्रति। तेषामेकैकशः पूजा कार्येत्येतत्क्षमं हि नः ॥१४-८८-१५॥
āgamiṣyanti rājānaḥ sarvataḥ kauravān prati। teṣām ekaikaśaḥ pūjā kārya etat kṣamam hi naḥ ॥14-88-15॥
[आगमिष्यन्ति (āgamiṣyanti) - they will come; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; कौरवान् (kauravān) - towards the Kauravas; प्रति (prati) - towards; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; एकैकशः (ekaikaśaḥ) - one by one; पूजा (pūjā) - honor; कार्य (kārya) - should be done; एतत् (etat) - this; क्षमम् (kṣamam) - proper; हि (hi) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - for us;]
(They will come, kings from all sides towards the Kauravas. For them, one by one, honor should be done; this indeed is proper for us.)
Kings will come from all sides to the Kauravas. For each of them, individual honor should be performed; this indeed is appropriate for us. (14-88-15)
इत्येतद्वचनाद्राजा विज्ञाप्यो मम मानद। न तदात्ययिकं हि स्याद्यदर्घ्यानयने भवेत् ॥१४-८८-१६॥
ity etad-vacanād rājā vijñāpyaḥ mama mānada। na tad-ātyayikaṃ hi syād yad arghya-ānayane bhavet ॥14-88-16॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतद्-वचनात् (etad-vacanāt) - from these words; राजा (rājā) - the king; विज्ञाप्यः (vijñāpyaḥ) - should be informed; मम (mama) - to me; मानद (mānada) - O honor-giver; न (na) - not; तत्-आत्ययिकम् (tat-ātyayikam) - that (is) urgent; हि (hi) - indeed; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; यत् (yat) - which; अर्घ्य-आनयने (arghya-ānayane) - in the bringing of the arghya (offering); भवेत् (bhavet) - might arise;]
(Thus, from these words, the king should be informed by me, O honor-giver. That would not indeed be urgent which might arise in the bringing of the arghya offering.)
Thus, on the basis of these words, the king should be informed by me, O bestower of honor. There would indeed be nothing urgent regarding the bringing of the arghya offering. (14-88-16)
कर्तुमर्हति तद्राजा भवांश्चाप्यनुमन्यताम्। राजद्वेषाद्विनश्येयुर्नेमाः राजन्प्रजाः पुनः ॥१४-८८-१७॥
kartum arhati tad rājā bhavāñ cāpy anumanyatām. rāja-dveṣād vinaśyeyur nemāḥ rājan prajāḥ punaḥ ॥14-88-17॥
[कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; (to act;) अर्हति (arhati) - is worthy; (deserves;) तत् (tad) - that; (this;) राजा (rājā) - the king; भवान् (bhavān) - you; (Your Honor;) च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुमन्यताम् (anumanyatām) - let be approved; (should allow;) राजद्वेषात् (rāja-dveṣāt) - from king's hostility; विनश्येयुः (vinaśyeyuḥ) - may perish; न (na) - not; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; राजन् (rājan) - O King; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(To do is worthy that king, you and also let be approved. From the king's hostility may perish not these, O King, subjects again.)
That act is proper for the king, and you should also approve it. Let not these subjects perish again, O King, due to enmity with the king. (14-88-17)
इदमन्यच्च कौन्तेय वचः स पुरुषोऽब्रवीत्। धनञ्जयस्य नृपते तन्मे निगदतः शृणु ॥१४-८८-१८॥
idam anyac ca kaunteya vacaḥ sa puruṣo 'bravīt। dhanañjayasya nṛpate tan me nigadataḥ śṛṇu॥14-88-18॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; स (sa) - he; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; धनञ्जयस्य (dhanañjayasya) - of Dhananjaya; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; निगदतः (nigadataḥ) - speaking; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(This another and, O son of Kunti, speech he man said. Of Dhananjaya, O king, that from me speaking, hear.)
O son of Kunti, this is another speech that he said. O king, hear that (speech) of Dhananjaya from me as I recount it. (14-88-18)
उपयास्यति यज्ञं नो मणिपूरपतिर्नृपः। पुत्रो मम महातेजा दयितो बभ्रुवाहनः ॥१४-८८-१९॥
upayāsyati yajñaṃ no maṇipūrapatir nṛpaḥ। putro mama mahātejā dayito babhruvāhanaḥ ॥14-88-19॥
[उपयास्यति (upayāsyati) - will approach; यज्ञं (yajñaṃ) - sacrifice; नो (no) - our; मणिपूरपतिः (maṇipūrapatiḥ) - lord of Maṇipura; नृपः (nṛpaḥ) - king; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; मम (mama) - my; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great splendor; दयितः (dayitaḥ) - beloved; बभ्रुवाहनः (babhruvāhanaḥ) - Babhruvāhana;]
(The king, lord of Maṇipura, our (son), of great splendor, beloved Babhruvāhana, will approach the sacrifice.)
Our son, the king, lord of Maṇipura, the illustrious and beloved Babhruvāhana, will come to the sacrifice. (14-88-19)
तं भवान्मदपेक्षार्थं विधिवत्प्रतिपूजयेत्। स हि भक्तोऽनुरक्तश्च मम नित्यमिति प्रभो ॥१४-८८-२०॥
taṁ bhavān madapekṣārthaṁ vidhivat pratipūjayet। sa hi bhakto'nuraktaś ca mama nityam iti prabho ॥14-88-20॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); मद्-अपेक्षा-अर्थम् (mad-apekṣā-artham) - for the sake of attention towards me; विधिवत् (vidhivat) - in accordance with the rules; प्रतिपूजयेत् (pratipūjayet) - should honor; सः (saḥ) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; भक्तः (bhaktaḥ) - devotee; अनुरक्तः (anuraktaḥ) - attached; च (ca) - and; मम (mama) - to me; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Him you for the sake of attention towards me in accordance with the rules should honor. He indeed devotee and attached to me always thus O lord.)
O lord, you should properly honor him for the sake of his attention towards me, for he is indeed a devotee always devoted and attached to me. (14-88-20)
इत्येतद्वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। अभिनन्द्यास्य तद्वाक्यमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१४-८८-२१॥
ity etad vacanaṃ śrutvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। abhinandyāsya tad vākyam idaṃ vacanam abravīt॥14-88-21॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - the king of dharma; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; अभिनन्द्य (abhinandya) - having praised; अस्य (asya) - his; तत् (tat) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - statement; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus, having heard this speech, King Yudhishthira, the king of dharma, having praised his statement, spoke this speech.)
Having heard these words, King Yudhishthira, having praised his (words), spoke as follows. (14-88-21)
