विदितं भवतामेतद्यथा वृत्तः कुरुक्षयः। ममापराधात्तत्सर्वमिति ज्ञेयं तु कौरवाः ॥१५-५-१॥
viditaṁ bhavatāmetadyathā vṛttaḥ kurukṣayaḥ। mamāparādhāttatsarvamiti jñeyaṁ tu kauravāḥ ॥15-5-1॥
[विदितं (viditaṁ) - known; भवताम् (bhavatām) - to you (plural); एतद् (etad) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner that; वृत्तः (vṛttaḥ) - has occurred; कुरुक्षयः (kurukṣayaḥ) - the destruction of the Kurus; मम (mama) - by my; अपराधात् (aparādhāt) - due to the fault; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; इति (iti) - thus; ज्ञेयं (jñeyaṁ) - should be considered; तु (tu) - but; कौरवाः (kauravāḥ) - Kauravas;]
(Known to you this as in the manner that has occurred Kuru-destruction. By my fault that all thus should be known but, Kauravas.)
You know how the destruction of the Kurus occurred; all of that should be understood as due to my fault, O Kauravas. (15-5-1)
योऽहं दुष्टमतिं मूढं ज्ञातीनां भयवर्धनम्। दुर्योधनं कौरवाणामाधिपत्येऽभ्यषेचयम् ॥१५-५-२॥
yo'ham duṣṭamatiṃ mūḍhaṃ jñātīnāṃ bhayavardhanam। duryodhanaṃ kauravāṇām ādhipatye'bhyaṣecayam ॥15-5-2॥
[योऽहं (yo'ham) - I who; दुष्टमतिं (duṣṭamatiṃ) - of evil mind; मूढं (mūḍham) - deluded; ज्ञातीनां (jñātīnām) - of kinsmen; भयवर्धनम् (bhayavardhanam) - who increases fear; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; कौरवाणाम् (kauravāṇām) - of the Kauravas; आधिपत्ये (ādhipatye) - in sovereignty; अभ्यषेचयम् (abhyaṣecayam) - I anointed;]
(I who (anointed) Duryodhana, of evil mind, deluded, the fear-increaser of kinsmen, in sovereignty of the Kauravas.)
I am the one who anointed Duryodhana, a wicked-minded and deluded man who brought fear to his kinsmen, as the sovereign of the Kauravas. (15-5-2)
यच्चाहं वासुदेवस्य वाक्यं नाश्रौषमर्थवत्। वध्यतां साध्वयं पापः सामात्य इति दुर्मतिः ॥१५-५-३॥
yac cāhaṃ vāsudevasya vākyam nāśrauṣam arthavat। vadhyatāṃ sādhv ayaṃ pāpaḥ sāmātya iti durmatiḥ ॥15-5-3॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - command; न (na) - not; अश्रौषम् (aśrauṣam) - (I) heard; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - attentively; वध्यताम् (vadhyatām) - let (him) be killed; साधु (sādhu) - well; अयम् (ayam) - this; पापः (pāpaḥ) - wicked (one); सामात्यः (sāmātyaḥ) - with attendants; इति (iti) - thus; दुर्मतिः (durmatiḥ) - evil-minded (one);]
(Which and I of Vāsudeva command not (I) heard attentively. "Let (him) be killed well, this wicked one with attendants," thus (the) evil-minded (said).)
Because I did not attentively heed the command of Vāsudeva, saying, "Let this wicked one along with his attendants be killed immediately," thus spoke the evil-minded (one). (15-5-3)
पुत्रस्नेहाभिभूतश्च हितमुक्तो मनीषिभिः। विदुरेणाथ भीष्मेण द्रोणेन च कृपेण च ॥१५-५-४॥
putrasnehābhibhūtaś ca hitam ukto manīṣibhiḥ. vidureṇātha bhīṣmeṇa droṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca ॥15-5-4॥
[पुत्रस्नेहाभिभूतः (putrasnehābhibhūtaḥ) - overpowered by affection for (his) son; च (ca) - and; हितम् (hitam) - beneficial (advice); उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed (he was told); मनीषिभिः (manīṣibhiḥ) - by the wise; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; अथ (atha) - and then; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Drona; च (ca) - and; कृपेण (kṛpeṇa) - by Kripa; च (ca) - and;]
(Overpowered by affection for (his) son and addressed with beneficial (advice) by the wise, by Vidura, and then by Bhishma, by Drona and by Kripa and.)
Though overpowered by affection for his son, he was given beneficial advice by the wise—by Vidura, then by Bhishma, as well as by Drona and Kripa. (15-5-4)
पदे पदे भगवता व्यासेन च महात्मना। सञ्जयेनाथ गान्धार्या तदिदं तप्यतेऽद्य माम् ॥१५-५-५॥
pade pade bhagavatā vyāsena ca mahātmanā। sañjayenātha gāndhāryā tadidaṁ tapyate'dya mām ॥15-5-5॥
[पदे पदे (pade pade) - at every step; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the venerable one; व्यासेन (vyāsena) - by Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; सञ्जयेन (sañjayena) - by Sañjaya; अथ (atha) - and then; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - by Gāndhārī; तद् (tad) - that; इदं (idaṁ) - this; तप्यते (tapyate) - is tormented; अद्य (adya) - today; माम् (mām) - me;]
(At every step by the venerable Vyāsa and the great-souled one, by Sañjaya and then by Gāndhārī, that, this torments me today.)
At every step, this is what torments me today: by the venerable Vyāsa, by the great-souled Sañjaya, and then by Gāndhārī.
यच्चाहं पाण्डुपुत्रेण गुणवत्सु महात्मसु। न दत्तवाञ्श्रियं दीप्तां पितृपैतामहीमिमाम् ॥१५-५-६॥
yaccāhaṃ pāṇḍuputreṇa guṇavatsu mahātmasu। na dattavāñśriyaṃ dīptāṃ pitṛpaitāmahīmimām ॥15-5-6॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; पाण्डुपुत्रेण (pāṇḍuputreṇa) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; गुणवत्सु (guṇavatsu) - in the virtuous; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - in the great-souled; न (na) - not; दत्तवान् (dattavān) - given; श्रियं (śriyam) - prosperity; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - brilliant; पितृपैतामहीम् (pitṛpaitāmahīm) - inherited from father and grandfather; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(Which and I by the son of Pāṇḍu, in the virtuous, in the great-souled, have not given prosperity brilliant inherited from father and grandfather, this.)
And as for this brilliant prosperity inherited from father and grandfather, which I have not given to the virtuous and great-souled son of Pāṇḍu, (15-5-6)
विनाशं पश्यमानो हि सर्वराज्ञां गदाग्रजः। एतच्छ्रेयः स परमममन्यत जनार्दनः ॥१५-५-७॥
vināśaṁ paśyamāno hi sarvarājñāṁ gadāgrajaḥ। etacchreyaḥ sa paramamamanyata janārdanaḥ ॥15-5-7॥
[विनाशं (vināśam) - destruction; पश्यमानः (paśyamānaḥ) - seeing; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वराज्ञां (sarvarājñām) - of all kings; गदाग्रजः (gadāgrajaḥ) - elder brother of Gadā (Bhīma); एतत् (etat) - this; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - better; सः (saḥ) - he; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; अमन्यत (amanyata) - considered; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Seeing the destruction indeed of all kings, Gadāgraja (Bhīma), this better he supreme considered Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa).)
Seeing the destruction of all the kings, Bhīma (the elder brother of Gadā), Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) considered this course as the highest good. (15-5-7)
सोऽहमेतान्यलीकानि निवृत्तान्यात्मनः सदा। हृदये शल्यभूतानि धारयामि सहस्रशः ॥१५-५-८॥
so'ham etāni alīkāni nivṛttāni ātmanaḥ sadā। hṛdaye śalyabhūtāni dhārayāmi sahasraśaḥ ॥15-5-8॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; एतानि (etāni) - these; अलीकानि (alīkāni) - false things; untruths; निवृत्तानि (nivṛttāni) - ceased; gone away; ended; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; of myself; सदा (sadā) - always; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in (the) heart; शल्यभूतानि (śalyabhūtāni) - having become thorns; like splinters; धारयामि (dhārayāmi) - I hold; I bear; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; in thousands;]
(He—I—these false things—which have ceased—of myself—always—in (the) heart—having become thorns—I bear—in thousands.)
He, I always bear these falsehoods—though ended from myself—like thorns in the heart, by thousands. (15-5-8)
विशेषतस्तु दह्यामि वर्षं पञ्चदशं हि वै। अस्य पापस्य शुद्ध्यर्थं नियतोऽस्मि सुदुर्मतिः ॥१५-५-९॥
viśeṣatastu dahyāmi varṣaṃ pañcadaśaṃ hi vai। asya pāpasya śuddhyarthaṃ niyato'smi sudurmatiḥ ॥15-5-9॥
[विशेषतस् (viśeṣatas) - especially; तु (tu) - but; दह्यामि (dahyāmi) - I am scorched; वर्षम् (varṣam) - year; पञ्चदशम् (pañcadaśam) - fifteen; हि (hi) - indeed; वै (vai) - truly; अस्य (asya) - of this; पापस्य (pāpasya) - of the sin; शुद्ध्यर्थम् (śuddhyartham) - for the sake of purification; नियतः (niyataḥ) - disciplined; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; सुदुर्मतिः (sudurmatiḥ) - very wicked-minded;]
(Especially but I am scorched for fifteen years indeed truly, for the sake of purification of this sin, I am disciplined, very wicked-minded.)
But especially, I, a very wicked-minded person, am indeed scorched for fifteen years; for the sake of purifying this sin, I am disciplined. (15-5-9)
चतुर्थे नियते काले कदाचिदपि चाष्टमे। तृष्णाविनयनं भुञ्जे गान्धारी वेद तन्मम ॥१५-५-१०॥
caturthe niyate kāle kadācid api cāṣṭame. tṛṣṇāvinayanaṃ bhuñje gāndhārī veda tan mama ॥15-5-10॥
[चतुर्थे (caturthe) - in the fourth; (locative, singular); नियते (niyate) - fixed; (locative, singular); काले (kāle) - time; (locative, singular); कदाचिदपि (kadācid api) - at any time; even once; च (ca) - and; अष्टमे (aṣṭame) - in the eighth; (locative, singular); तृष्णाविनयनं (tṛṣṇāvinayanaṃ) - removal of thirst; भुञ्जे (bhuñje) - I eat; (first person singular); गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; (proper noun); वेद (veda) - knows; तन्मम (tan mama) - that of me;]
(In the fourth, fixed time, or even at any time, and in the eighth, I eat (only) for the removal of thirst; Gandhari knows that of me.)
At the appointed fourth time, even occasionally in the eighth, I eat only to remove thirst; Gandhari knows this about me. (15-5-10)
करोत्याहारमिति मां सर्वः परिजनः सदा। युधिष्ठिरभयाद्वेत्ति भृशं तप्यति पाण्डवः ॥१५-५-११॥
karoty āhāram iti māṃ sarvaḥ parijanaḥ sadā। yudhiṣṭhirabhayād vetti bhṛśaṃ tapyati pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15-5-11॥
[करोति (karoti) - does; performs; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; nourishment; इति (iti) - thus; so; माम् (mām) - me; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - everyone; all; परिजनः (parijanaḥ) - attendant; retinue; सदा (sadā) - always; युधिष्ठिरभयात् (yudhiṣṭhira-bhayāt) - from the fear of Yudhishthira; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; intensely; तप्यति (tapyati) - is tormented; suffers; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; (Yudhishthira or a Pandava);]
(Does food thus me everyone attendant always. From the fear of Yudhishthira knows greatly is tormented the Pandava.)
Everyone among the attendants always thinks, 'He prepares the food for me.' The Pandava, knowing this due to fear of Yudhishthira, suffers greatly. (15-5-11)
भूमौ शये जप्यपरो दर्भेष्वजिनसंवृतः। नियमव्यपदेशेन गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥१५-५-१२॥
bhūmau śaye japyaparo darbheṣvajinasamvṛtaḥ। niyamavyapadeśena gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ॥15-5-12॥
[भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; शये (śaye) - lying; जप्यपरो (japyaparaḥ) - devoted to muttering; दर्भेषु (darbheṣu) - on darbha grass; अजिनसंवृतः (ajinasamvṛtaḥ) - covered with a deerskin; नियमव्यपदेशेन (niyamavyapadeśena) - under the name of observance; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious one;]
(On the ground lying, devoted to muttering, on darbha grass, covered with a deerskin, under the name of observance, Gandhari and the illustrious one.)
Lying on the ground, devoted to muttering, on darbha grass, covered with a deerskin, Gandhari, the illustrious one, was engaged in observance. (15-5-12)
हतं पुत्रशतं शूरं सङ्ग्रामेष्वपलायिनम्। नानुतप्यामि तच्चाहं क्षत्रधर्मं हि तं विदुः ॥ इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजानमभ्यभाषत कौरवः ॥१५-५-१३॥
hataṃ putraśataṃ śūraṃ saṅgrāmeṣvapalāyinam। nānutapyāmi taccāhaṃ kṣatradharmaṃ hi taṃ viduḥ॥ ityuktvā dharmarājānamabhyabhāṣata kauravaḥ॥15-5-13॥
[हतं (hataṃ) - slain; पुत्रशतम् (putraśatam) - hundred sons; शूरम् (śūram) - heroic; सङ्ग्रामेषु (saṅgrāmeṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनम् (apalāyinam) - not fleeing; न (na) - not; अनुतप्यामि (anutapyāmi) - I regret; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; क्षत्रधर्मम् (kṣatradharmam) - warrior’s duty; हि (hi) - indeed; तम् (tam) - that; विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) know; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; धर्मराजानम् (dharmarājānam) - Dharmarāja; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed; कौरवः (kauravaḥ) - the Kaurava;]
(Slain hundred sons heroic in battles not fleeing; I do not regret that and I; warrior’s duty indeed that (they) know; thus having spoken Dharmarāja addressed the Kaurava.)
Having spoken thus, the Kaurava addressed Dharmarāja: “I do not regret that a hundred heroic sons—who did not flee in battles—were slain, for indeed, that is known as a warrior’s duty.” (15-5-13)
भद्रं ते यादवीमातर्वाक्यं चेदं निबोध मे। सुखमस्म्युषितः पुत्र त्वया सुपरिपालितः ॥१५-५-१४॥
bhadraṁ te yādavīmātar vākyaṁ cedaṁ nibodha me. sukham asmi uṣitaḥ putra tvayā suparipālitaḥ ॥15-5-14॥
[भद्रं (bhadram) - auspiciousness; ते (te) - to you; यादवीमातर् (yādavīmātar) - O mother of the Yādavas; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - words; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṁ) - this; निबोध (nibodha) - please listen; मे (me) - my; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - dwelt; पुत्र (putra) - son; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सुपरिपालितः (suparipālitaḥ) - well protected;]
(Auspiciousness to you, O mother of the Yādavas, and these words please listen my. Happily I am dwelt, son, by you well protected.)
Auspiciousness to you, O mother of the Yadavas, please hear my words: I have lived here happily, O son, well cared for by you. (15-5-14)
महादानानि दत्तानि श्राद्धानि च पुनः पुनः। प्रकृष्टं मे वयः पुत्र पुण्यं चीर्णं यथाबलम् ॥ गान्धारी हतपुत्रेयं धैर्येणोदीक्षते च माम् ॥१५-५-१५॥
mahādānāni dattāni śrāddhāni ca punaḥ punaḥ। prakṛṣṭaṃ me vayaḥ putra puṇyaṃ cīrṇaṃ yathābalam॥ gāndhārī hataputreyam dhairyeṇodīkṣate ca mām॥15-5-15॥

(Great gifts have been given, śrāddha rites and again and again; advanced is my age, son, merit has been accomplished according to strength. Gāndhārī, having lost her son, this woman, with fortitude looks at me also.)
Great gifts have been given; rites for the ancestors performed again and again. My age is advanced, O son; my meritorious acts have been accomplished according to my ability. This is Gāndhārī, who has lost her sons; with steadfast fortitude, she also looks at me. (15-5-15)
द्रौपद्या ह्यपकर्तारस्तव चैश्वर्यहारिणः। समतीता नृशंसास्ते धर्मेण निहता युधि ॥१५-५-१६॥
draupadyā hy apakartāras tava caiśvaryahāriṇaḥ। samatītā nṛśaṃsās te dharmeṇa nihatā yudhi ॥15-5-16॥
[द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - by Draupadī; (instrumental case); हि (hi) - indeed; अपकर्तारः (apakartāraḥ) - offenders; wrongdoers; तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; ऐश्वर्यहारिणः (aiśvaryahāriṇaḥ) - destroyers of sovereignty; robbers of wealth; समतीता (samatītā) - are passed away; have come to an end; नृशंसाः (nṛśaṃsāḥ) - cruel ones; ते (te) - they; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; through justice; निहता (nihata) - slain; struck down; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(By Draupadī indeed offenders, your and destroyers of sovereignty, those cruel ones have passed away, they by righteousness slain in battle.)
Indeed, the offenders against Draupadī and those who deprived you of sovereignty — those cruel ones — have all perished; they were slain by justice in battle. (15-5-16)
न तेषु प्रतिकर्तव्यं पश्यामि कुरुनन्दन। सर्वे शस्त्रजिताँल्लोकान्गतास्तेऽभिमुखं हताः ॥१५-५-१७॥
na teṣu pratikartavyaṃ paśyāmi kurunandana। sarve śastrajitāṃllokāngatāste'bhimukhaṃ hatāḥ ॥15-5-17॥
[न (na) - not; तेषु (teṣu) - in them; प्रतिकर्तव्यम् (pratikartavyam) - to be done in return; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शस्त्रजिताम् (śastrajitām) - won by weapons; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; ते (te) - they; अभिमुखम् (abhimukham) - facing mutually; हताः (hatāḥ) - slain;]
(Not in them do I see anything to be done in return, O joy of the Kurus. All having gone to worlds won by weapons, they, facing mutually, are slain.)
O joy of the Kurus, I do not see any repayment to be made to them; they are all slain, mutually facing, and have attained worlds won by weapons. (15-5-17)
आत्मनस्तु हितं मुख्यं प्रतिकर्तव्यमद्य मे। गान्धार्याश्चैव राजेन्द्र तदनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥१५-५-१८॥
ātmanas tu hitaṃ mukhyaṃ pratikartavyam adya me. gāndhāryāś caiva rājendra tadanugñātum arhasi ॥15-5-18॥
[आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; तु (tu) - but; हितम् (hitam) - welfare; मुख्यम् (mukhyam) - the principal; प्रतिकर्तव्यम् (pratikartavyam) - to be reciprocated; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - by me; गान्धार्याः (gāndhāryāḥ) - of Gāndhārī; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; तत् (tat) - that; अनुज्ञातुम् (anugñātum) - to permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; ॥१५-५-१८॥ (॥15-5-18॥) - ;]
(But the principal welfare of oneself is to be reciprocated today by me. And indeed, O king, of Gāndhārī, that you ought to permit.)
But today, I must reciprocate the principal welfare of myself. And so, O king, you should permit Gāndhārī for that. (15-5-18)
त्वं हि धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठः सततं धर्मवत्सलः। राजा गुरुः प्राणभृतां तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥१५-५-१९॥
tvaṁ hi dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ satataṁ dharmavatsalaḥ। rājā guruḥ prāṇabhṛtāṁ tasmādetadbravīmyaham ॥15-5-19॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtām) - of those upholding dharma; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; सततं (satataṁ) - always; धर्मवत्सलः (dharmavatsalaḥ) - fond of dharma; राजा (rājā) - king; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; प्राणभृतां (prāṇabhṛtām) - of living beings; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एतत् (etad) - this; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(You indeed, of upholders of dharma the best, always fond of dharma; king, teacher of living beings, therefore this I say I.)
You are indeed the foremost among upholders of dharma, ever fond of dharma, king and teacher of living beings; therefore, I say this to you. (15-5-19)
अनुज्ञातस्त्वया वीर संश्रयेयं वनान्यहम्। चीरवल्कलभृद्राजन्गान्धार्या सहितोऽनया ॥ तवाशिषः प्रयुञ्जानो भविष्यामि वनेचरः ॥१५-५-२०॥
anujñātaḥ tvayā vīra saṃśrayeyam vanāni aham। cīra-valkala-bhṛt rājan gāndhāryā sahitaḥ anayā॥ tava āśiṣaḥ prayuñjānaḥ bhaviṣyāmi vane-caraḥ॥15-5-20॥
[अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; वीर (vīra) - O hero; संश्रयेयम् (saṃśrayeyam) - I may take refuge; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; अहम् (aham) - I; चीरवल्कलभृत् (cīra-valkala-bhṛt) - bearing bark and garments of bark-cloth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; गान्धार्या (gāndhāryā) - with Gandhari; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; अनया (anayā) - with this (one); तव (tava) - your; आशिषः (āśiṣaḥ) - blessings; प्रयुञ्जानः (prayuñjānaḥ) - using; भविष्यामि (bhaviṣyāmi) - I shall become; वनेचरः (vane-caraḥ) - forest-dweller;]
(Having been permitted by you, O hero, I may take refuge in the forests. O king, bearing bark and garments of bark-cloth, together with Gandhari, with this (one), using your blessings, I shall become a forest-dweller.)
O hero, having received your permission, I shall take refuge in the forests; O king, wearing bark and garments of bark-cloth, I will dwell as a forest-dweller together with Gandhari, making use of your blessings. (15-5-20)
उचितं नः कुले तात सर्वेषां भरतर्षभ। पुत्रेष्वैश्वर्यमाधाय वयसोऽन्ते वनं नृप ॥१५-५-२१॥
ucitaṃ naḥ kule tāta sarveṣāṃ bharatarṣabha। putreṣvaiśvaryam ādhāya vayaso'nte vanaṃ nṛpa ॥15-5-21॥
[उचितं (ucitaṃ) - proper; appropriate; नः (naḥ) - for us; कुले (kule) - in the family; तात (tāta) - O father; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - for all (of us); भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; पुत्रेषु (putreṣu) - to sons; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - sovereignty; lordship; आधाय (ādhāya) - having placed; वयसः (vayasaḥ) - of life; अन्ते (ante) - at the end; वनम् (vanam) - forest; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Proper for us in the family, O father, for all, O bull among the Bharatas, having placed sovereignty to sons, at the end of life, forest, O king.)
O father, it is proper for us, in our family, for all (of us), O bull among the Bharatas, to entrust sovereignty to the sons and, at the end of life, to retire to the forest, O king. (15-5-21)
तत्राहं वायुभक्षो वा निराहारोऽपि वा वसन्। पत्न्या सहानया वीर चरिष्यामि तपः परम् ॥१५-५-२२॥
tatrāhaṃ vāyubhakṣo vā nirāhāro'pi vā vasan। patnyā sahānayā vīra cariṣyāmi tapaḥ param ॥15-5-22॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अहम् (aham) - I; वायुभक्षः (vāyubhakṣaḥ) - subsisting on air; वा (vā) - or; निराहारः (nirāhāraḥ) - without food; अपि (api) - also; वा (vā) - or; वसन् (vasan) - dwelling; पत्न्या (patnyā) - with (my) wife; सहा (sahā) - together with; अनया (anayā) - this (one); वीर (vīra) - O hero; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I will perform; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; परम् (param) - supreme;]
(There I, subsisting on air or even without food, dwelling together with this wife, O hero, I will perform supreme austerity.)
There, O hero, I shall live with this wife of mine, subsisting on air or even wholly without food, and practice the highest austerity. (15-5-22)
त्वं चापि फलभाक्तात तपसः पार्थिवो ह्यसि। फलभाजो हि राजानः कल्याणस्येतरस्य वा ॥१५-५-२३॥
tvaṁ cāpi phalabhāktāt tapasaḥ pārthivo hyasi। phalabhājo hi rājānaḥ kalyāṇasyetarasya vā ॥15-5-23॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; फलभाक् (phalabhāk) - enjoyer of fruit; तात् (tāt) - dear; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - are; फलभाजः (phalabhājaḥ) - enjoyers of fruit; हि (hi) - indeed; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; कल्याणस्य (kalyāṇasya) - of good (result); इतरस्य (itarasya) - of other (than good); वा (vā) - or;]
(You and also, dear, enjoyer of fruit of austerity, king indeed are. Enjoyers of fruit indeed are kings, of good or of other (fruit).)
You too, dear king, indeed are an enjoyer of the fruits of austerities. For kings are indeed enjoyers of results, whether good or otherwise. (15-5-23)
