भीम ज्येष्ठो गुरुर्मे त्वं नातोऽन्यद्वक्तुमुत्सहे। धृतराष्ट्रो हि राजर्षिः सर्वथा मानमर्हति ॥१५-१८-१॥
bhīma jyeṣṭho gurur me tvaṁ nāto'nya dvaktum utsahe। dhṛtarāṣṭro hi rājarṣiḥ sarvathā mānam arhati॥15-18-1॥
[भीम (bhīma) - O Bhīma; ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - the elder; the senior; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the venerable one; मे (me) - to me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; न (na) - not; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; अन्यत् (anyat) - other (anything else); वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; उत्सहे (utsahe) - I am able; I am capable; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; हि (hi) - indeed; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; मानम् (mānam) - honor; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; is worthy of;]
(O Bhīma, elder, venerable one, to me, you, not therefore, other to say I am able. Dhṛtarāṣṭra indeed, royal sage, in every way, honor, deserves.)
O Bhīma, you are my elder and venerable one; therefore, I am not able to say anything else. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, indeed, as a royal sage, in every way deserves honor. (15-18-1)
न स्मरन्त्यपराद्धानि स्मरन्ति सुकृतानि च। असम्भिन्नार्थमर्यादाः साधवः पुरुषोत्तमाः ॥१५-१८-२॥
na smaranti aparāddhāni smaranti sukṛtāni ca। asambhinnārtha-maryādāḥ sādhavaḥ puruṣottamāḥ॥15-18-2॥
[न (na) - not; स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - they remember; अपराद्धानि (aparāddhāni) - offenses; स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - they remember; सुकृतानि (sukṛtāni) - good deeds; च (ca) - and; असम्भिन्नार्थमर्यादाः (asambhinnārthamar yādāḥ) - those whose limits of meaning are not transgressed; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - virtuous (men); पुरुषोत्तमाः (puruṣottamāḥ) - excellent men;]
(Not they remember offenses; they remember good deeds and; those whose limits of meaning are not transgressed, the virtuous, the excellent men.)
The excellent and virtuous men, who never transgress proper bounds, do not remember others’ offenses, but do remember good deeds. (15-18-2)
इदं मद्वचनात्क्षत्तः कौरवं ब्रूहि पार्थिवम्। यावदिच्छति पुत्राणां दातुं तावद्ददाम्यहम् ॥१५-१८-३॥
idaṃ mad-vacanāt kṣattaḥ kauravaṃ brūhi pārthivam। yāvad icchati putrāṇāṃ dātuṃ tāvad dadāmy aham ॥15-18-3॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; मद्वचनात् (mad-vacanāt) - from my word; क्षत्तः (kṣattaḥ) - O Kṣatta (Vidura); कौरवं (kauravam) - to the Kaurava; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - O king; यावत् (yāvat) - as much; इच्छति (icchati) - he desires; पुत्राणां (putrāṇāṃ) - of sons; दातुम् (dātum) - to give; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; ददामि (dadāmi) - I give; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(This, from my word, O Kṣatta, to the Kaurava speak, O king. As much as he desires of sons to give, so much I give.)
O Kṣatta, speak this from my side to the Kaurava, O king: I will give as much share of the sons as he desires. (15-18-3)
भीष्मादीनां च सर्वेषां सुहृदामुपकारिणाम्। मम कोशादिति विभो मा भूद्भीमः सुदुर्मनाः ॥१५-१८-४॥
bhīṣmādīnāṃ ca sarveṣāṃ suhṛdām upakāriṇām। mama kośād iti vibho mā bhūd bhīmaḥ sudurmanāḥ॥15-18-4॥
[भीष्मादीनां (bhīṣmādīnāṃ) - of Bhīṣma and others; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; सुहृदाम् (suhṛdām) - of friends; उपकारिणाम् (upakāriṇām) - benefactors; मम (mama) - my; कोशात् (kośāt) - from treasury; इति (iti) - thus; विभो (vibho) - O lord; मा (mā) - let not; भूत् (bhūt) - be; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; सुदुर्मनाः (sudurmanāḥ) - very dejected in mind;]
(Of Bhīṣma and others, and of all friends and benefactors, from my treasury—thus, O lord, let not Bhīma be very dejected in mind.)
O lord, let Bhīma not be very dejected in mind thinking, "Of Bhīṣma and others, and of all benefactors and friends, (gifts have been given) from my treasury." (15-18-4)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
इत्युक्ते धर्मराजस्तमर्जुनं प्रत्यपूजयत्। भीमसेनः कटाक्षेण वीक्षां चक्रे धनञ्जयम् ॥१५-१८-५॥
ityukte dharmarājastam arjunaṃ pratyapūjayat। bhīmasenaḥ kaṭākṣeṇa vīkṣāṃ cakre dhanañjayam ॥15-18-5॥
[इत्युक्ते (ityukte) - thus having been spoken; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); तम् (tam) - him; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; प्रत्यपूजयत् (pratyapūjayat) - honored in return; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; कटाक्षेण (kaṭākṣeṇa) - with a sidelong glance; वीक्षाम् (vīkṣām) - a look; चक्रे (cakre) - cast/made; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (another name of Arjuna);]
(Thus having been spoken, Dharmarāja him Arjuna honored in return. Bhīmasena with a sidelong glance a look cast at Dhanañjaya.)
When these words were spoken, Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) honored Arjuna in return. Bhīmasena cast a sidelong glance at Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). (15-18-5)
ततः स विदुरं धीमान्वाक्यमाह युधिष्ठिरः। न भीमसेने कोपं स नृपतिः कर्तुमर्हति ॥१५-१८-६॥
tataḥ sa viduraṃ dhīmān vākyam āha yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। na bhīmasene kopaṃ sa nṛpatiḥ kartum arhati॥15-18-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; विदुरं (viduraṃ) - Vidura (accusative singular, the proper noun); धीमान् (dhīmān) - wise one; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; आह (āha) - said; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira (nominative singular, the proper noun); न (na) - not; भीमसेने (bhīmasene) - with Bhimasena; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; स (sa) - that; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - king; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हति (arhati) - is fit;]
(Then he, Yudhishthira, the wise, said a word to Vidura. Not with Bhimasena is that king fit to do anger.)
Then the wise Yudhishthira said to Vidura: "The king should not become angry with Bhimasena." (15-18-6)
परिक्लिष्टो हि भीमोऽयं हिमवृष्ट्यातपादिभिः। दुःखैर्बहुविधैर्धीमानरण्ये विदितं तव ॥१५-१८-७॥
parikliṣṭo hi bhīmo'yaṃ himavṛṣṭyātapādibhiḥ. duḥkhairbahuvidhairdhīmānaranye viditaṃ tava ॥15-18-7॥
[परिक्लिष्टः (parikliṣṭaḥ) - much afflicted; हि (hi) - indeed; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; अयम् (ayam) - this; हिमवृष्ट्यातपादिभिः (himavṛṣṭyātapādibhiḥ) - by cold, rain, and heat, etc.; दुःखैः (duḥkhaiḥ) - by sufferings; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; विदितम् (viditam) - well known; तव (tava) - to you;]
(Much afflicted indeed Bhīma this by cold, rain, heat and so on, by sufferings of many kinds, the wise in the forest, well known to you.)
This Bhīma is indeed much afflicted by cold, rain, heat, and other such sufferings of many kinds in the forest, as is well known to you. (15-18-7)
किं तु मद्वचनाद्ब्रूहि राजानं भरतर्षभम्। यद्यदिच्छसि यावच्च गृह्यतां मद्गृहादिति ॥१५-१८-८॥
kiṁ tu mad-vachanād brūhi rājānaṁ bharatarṣabham। yady adicchasi yāvat ca gṛhyatām mad-gṛhād iti ॥15-18-8॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; मद्वचनात् (mad-vachanāt) - from my word; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - speak; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; भरतर्षभम् (bharatarṣabham) - bull among the Bharatas; यत् (yat) - what; यदि (yadi) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; यावत् (yāvat) - as much; च (ca) - and; गृह्यताम् (gṛhyatām) - let it be taken; मद्गृहात् (mad-gṛhāt) - from my house; इति (iti) - thus;]
(But, speak to the king, the bull among the Bharatas, from my word: 'Whatever, if you desire, as much and, let it be taken from my house' thus.)
But, tell the king, the foremost of the Bharatas, on my behalf: 'Whatever you wish, take as much as you like from my house.' (15-18-8)
यन्मात्सर्यमयं भीमः करोति भृशदुःखितः। न तन्मनसि कर्तव्यमिति वाच्यः स पार्थिवः ॥१५-१८-९॥
yanmātsaryamayaṃ bhīmaḥ karoti bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ। na tanmanasi kartavyamiti vācyaḥ sa pārthivaḥ ॥15-18-9॥
[यत् (yat) - which; मात्सर्यमयम् (mātsaryamayam) - consisting of envy; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma (proper noun, nominative singular); करोति (karoti) - does; भृशदुःखितः (bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ) - greatly distressed; न (na) - not; तत् (tat) - that; मनसि (manasi) - in the mind; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; इति (iti) - thus; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - should be said; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - that king;]
(Which consisting of envy Bhīma does, greatly distressed; not that in the mind should be done thus should be said he that king (15-18-9))
One should tell that king: "That which Bhīma does out of envy and great distress, do not let it be held in your mind or followed." (15-18-9)
यन्ममास्ति धनं किञ्चिदर्जुनस्य च वेश्मनि। तस्य स्वामी महाराज इति वाच्यः स पार्थिवः ॥१५-१८-१०॥
yanm amāsti dhanaṃ kiñcid arjunasya ca veśmani। tasya svāmī mahārāja iti vācyaḥ sa pārthivaḥ ॥15-18-10॥
[यत् (yat) - which; मम (mama) - my; अस्ति (asti) - is; धनं (dhanam) - wealth; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - a little; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; च (ca) - and; वेश्मनि (veśmani) - in the house; तस्य (tasya) - of him; स्वामी (svāmī) - master; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; इति (iti) - thus; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - to be spoken; सः (saḥ) - he; पार्थिवः (pārthivaḥ) - king;]
(Which little wealth is mine in the house of Arjuna, of him the master, great king, thus to be spoken, he (is) the king.)
Whatever little wealth I possess in the house of Arjuna, its master should be addressed as 'great king'; he is the king. (15-18-10)
ददातु राजा विप्रेभ्यो यथेष्टं क्रियतां व्ययः। पुत्राणां सुहृदां चैव गच्छत्वानृण्यमद्य सः ॥१५-१८-११॥
dadātu rājā viprebhyo yatheṣṭaṃ kriyatāṃ vyayaḥ. putrāṇāṃ suhṛdāṃ caiva gacchatvānṛṇyamadya saḥ ॥15-18-11॥
[ददातु (dadātu) - let him give; (from √dā, to give) राजा (rājā) - the king; विप्रेभ्यः (viprebhyaḥ) - to the brāhmaṇas; यथेष्टं (yatheṣṭam) - as is desired; क्रियतां (kriyatāṃ) - let it be done; व्ययः (vyayaḥ) - expenditure; पुत्राणां (putrāṇām) - of sons; सुहृदां (suhṛdām) - of friends; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - let it proceed; अनृण्यम् (anṛṇyam) - freedom from debt; अद्य (adya) - today; सः (saḥ) - he (the king);]
(Let the king give to the brāhmaṇas as is desired, let expenditure be done; of sons, of friends, and indeed, let him today proceed to freedom from debt.)
Let the king give to the brāhmaṇas as is desired and let the necessary expenditure be made; as for his sons and friends, let him ensure today that he is free from debt. (15-18-11)
इदं चापि शरीरं मे तवायत्तं जनाधिप। धनानि चेति विद्धि त्वं क्षत्तर्नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥१५-१८-१२॥
idaṁ cāpi śarīraṁ me tavāyattaṁ janādhipa. dhanāni ceti viddhi tvaṁ kṣattar nāsty atra saṁśayaḥ ॥15-18-12॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शरीरं (śarīram) - body; मे (me) - my; तवायत्तं (tavāyattam) - dependent on you; जनाधिप (janādhipa) - O lord of men; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealths; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; विद्धि (viddhi) - know; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; क्षत्त (kṣatta) - O Kshatta (Vidura); नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अत्र (atra) - in this; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(This and also body my dependent on you O lord of men. Wealths and thus know you O Kshatta, not there is in this doubt.)
This body of mine is also dependent on you, O lord of men. Know, O Kshatta, that my wealths are also so; there is no doubt about this. (15-18-12)
