एवमुक्तस्तु राज्ञा स विदुरो बुद्धिसत्तमः। धृतराष्ट्रमुपेत्येदं वाक्यमाह महार्थवत् ॥१५-१९-१॥
evam uktas tu rājñā sa viduro buddhi-sattamaḥ. dhṛtarāṣṭram upetya idaṃ vākyam āha mahārthavat. 15-19-1
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; तु (tu) - but; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; सः (saḥ) - he; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; बुद्धिसत्तमः (buddhi-sattamaḥ) - best among the wise; धृतराष्ट्रम् (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhritarashtra; उपेत्य (upetya) - approaching; इदम् (idam) - this; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; आह (āha) - said; महार्थवत् (mahārthavat) - full of great meaning;]
(Thus addressed by the king, he, Vidura, best among the wise, approaching Dhritarashtra, spoke this speech full of great meaning.)
Thus, having been addressed by the king, Vidura, the wisest, approached Dhritarashtra and spoke these most meaningful words. (15-19-1)
उक्तो युधिष्ठिरो राजा भवद्वचनमादितः। स च संश्रुत्य वाक्यं ते प्रशशंस महाद्युतिः ॥१५-१९-२॥
ukto yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bhavadvacanam āditaḥ। sa ca saṃśrutya vākyaṃ te praśaśaṃsa mahādyutiḥ॥15-19-2॥
[उक्तः (uktaḥ) - addressed; spoken to; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; राजा (rājā) - king; भवद्वचनम् (bhavadvacanam) - your words; आदितः (āditaḥ) - from; having received; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; संसृुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having heard; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - statement; ते (te) - your; प्रशशंस (praśaśaṃsa) - praised; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the great resplendent one;]
(Addressed Yudhishthira the king, your words having received. He and having heard your statement praised, the great resplendent one.)
Yudhishthira the king, having been addressed with your words, after hearing your statement, the great resplendent one praised it. (15-19-2)
बीभत्सुश्च महातेजा निवेदयति ते गृहान्। वसु तस्य गृहे यच्च प्राणानपि च केवलान् ॥१५-१९-३॥
bībhatsuja ca mahātejaā nivedayati te gṛhān। vasu tasya gṛhe yac ca prāṇān api ca kevalān ॥15-19-3॥
[बीभत्सुश् (bībhatsuḥ) - Bībhatsu (Arjuna); च (ca) - and; महातेजा (mahātejāḥ) - of great brilliance; निवेदयति (nivedayati) - offers; ते (te) - to you; गृहान् (gṛhān) - houses; वसु (vasu) - wealth; तस्य (tasya) - his; गृहे (gṛhe) - in the house; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; केवलान् (kevalān) - alone;]
(Bībhatsu and of great brilliance offers to you houses, wealth in his house and which also lives and even alone.)
Bībhatsu, the mighty and brilliant one, offers you his houses, whatever wealth is in his house, and even his very life itself. (15-19-3)
धर्मराजश्च पुत्रस्ते राज्यं प्राणान्धनानि च। अनुजानाति राजर्षे यच्चान्यदपि किञ्चन ॥१५-१९-४॥
dharmarājaś ca putras te rājyaṃ prāṇān dhanāni ca। anujānāti rājarṣe yac cānyad api kiñcana॥15-19-4॥
[धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - King Dharma; (Yudhishthira); च (ca) - and; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; ते (te) - your; राज्यम् (rājyaṃ) - kingdom; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealth; च (ca) - and; अनुजानाति (anujānāti) - permits; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; यत् (yat) - whatever; च (ca) - and; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; अपि (api) - also; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(King Dharma and your son permit the kingdom, lives, wealth, and, O royal sage, whatever else also anything.)
O royal sage, King Dharma and your son permit you the kingdom, your life, your wealth, and anything else whatsoever. (15-19-4)
भीमस्तु सर्वदुःखानि संस्मृत्य बहुलान्युत। कृच्छ्रादिव महाबाहुरनुमन्ये विनिःश्वसन् ॥१५-१९-५॥
bhīmas tu sarvaduḥkhāni saṁsmṛtya bahulāny uta | kṛcchrād iva mahābāhur anumanye viniḥśvasan ॥15-19-5॥
[भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; (proper noun, subject); तु (tu) - but; (particle indicating contrast); सर्वदुःखानि (sarva-duḥkhāni) - all sufferings; (plural accusative); संस्मृत्य (saṁsmṛtya) - having remembered; (by recollection); बहुलानि (bahulāni) - many; (plural); उत (uta) - and; (particle); कृच्छ्रात् (kṛcchrāt) - from hardship; (ablative); इव (iva) - as if; (particle of comparison); महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; (epithet of Bhīma); अनुमन्ये (anumanye) - I consider; (first person); विनिःश्वसन् (viniḥśvasan) - sighing deeply; (present participle);]
(Bhīma but all sufferings having remembered many and from hardship as if the mighty-armed I consider sighing deeply.)
But Bhīma, having remembered all the many sufferings, sighed deeply like one afflicted by hardship, and I think upon this the mighty-armed one. (15-19-5)
स राज्ञा धर्मशीलेन भ्रात्रा बीभत्सुना तथा। अनुनीतो महाबाहुः सौहृदे स्थापितोऽपि च ॥१५-१९-६॥
sa rājyā dharmaśīlena bhrātrā bībhatsunā tathā| anunīto mahābāhuḥ sauhṛde sthāpito'pi ca ||15-19-6||
[स (sa) - he; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; धर्मशीलेन (dharmaśīlena) - by one of virtuous character; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by the brother; बीभत्सुना (bībhatsunā) - by Bībhatsu (Arjuna); तथा (tathā) - likewise; अनुनीतः (anunītaḥ) - persuaded; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed one; सौहृदे (sauhṛde) - in friendship; स्थापितः (sthāpitaḥ) - established; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and;]
(He, by the king, by one of virtuous character, by the brother, by Bībhatsu likewise, being persuaded, the mighty-armed one, in friendship, established, also and.)
He, persuaded by his brother, the virtuous king Bībhatsu (Arjuna), was established in friendship by the mighty-armed one also. (15-19-6)
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्य इति त्वां प्राह धर्मराट्। संस्मृत्य भीमस्तद्वैरं यदन्यायवदाचरेत् ॥१५-१९-७॥
na ca manyustvayā kārya iti tvāṃ prāha dharmarāṭ। saṃsmṛtya bhīmastadvairaṃ yadanyāyavadācaret ॥15-19-7॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्य (kārya) - should be done; इति (iti) - thus; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; प्राह (prāha) - said; धर्मराट् (dharmarāṭ) - Dharmarāja; संस्मृत्य (saṃsmṛtya) - having remembered; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; तत् (tat) - that; वैऱम् (vairam) - enmity; यत् (yat) - which; अन्यायवत् (anyāyavat) - unjustly; आचरेत् (ācaret) - he might act;]
(And not anger by you should be done thus to you said Dharmarāja. Having remembered Bhīma that enmity which unjustly he might act.)
Dharmarāja said to you, "You should not act in anger." Remembering that enmity, Bhīma might act unjustly. (15-19-7)
एवम्प्रायो हि धर्मोऽयं क्षत्रियाणां नराधिप। युद्धे क्षत्रियधर्मे च निरतोऽयं वृकोदरः ॥१५-१९-८॥
evam-prāyo hi dharmo'yaṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ narādhipa। yuddhe kṣatriya-dharme ca nirato'yaṃ vṛkodaraḥ ॥15-19-8॥
[एवम्प्रायः (evam-prāyaḥ) - of such disposition;“ हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; अयम् (ayam) - this; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of kṣatriyas; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king;“ युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; क्षत्रियधर्मे (kṣatriya-dharme) - in the kṣatriya duty; च (ca) - and; निरतः (nirataḥ) - engaged; अयम् (ayam) - this; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma);]
(Of such disposition indeed is this duty of the kṣatriyas, O king. In battle and in kṣatriya duty, engaged is this Vṛkodara.)
O king, this is indeed the way of the kṣatriya duty. This Vṛkodara (Bhīma) is devoted to battle and the duties of a kṣatriya. (15-19-8)
वृकोदरकृते चाहमर्जुनश्च पुनः पुनः। प्रसादयाव नृपते भवान्प्रभुरिहास्ति यत् ॥१५-१९-९॥
vṛkodara-kṛte ca aham arjunaś ca punaḥ punaḥ । prasādayāva nṛpate bhavān prabhuḥ iha asti yat ॥15-19-9॥
[वृकोदरकृते (vṛkodara-kṛte) - for the sake of Vṛkodara; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; च (ca) - and; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; प्रसादयाव (prasādayāva) - let us appease; नृपते (nṛpate) - O king; भवान् (bhavān) - your honour; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; इह (iha) - here; अस्ति (asti) - is; यत् (yat) - as;]
(For the sake of Vṛkodara, and I and Arjuna, again and again, let us appease, O king, your honour, lord, here, is, as.)
For the sake of Vṛkodara, both Arjuna and I, again and again, let us appease you, O king; for your honour is the lord here as is appropriate. (15-19-9)
प्रददातु भवान्वित्तं यावदिच्छसि पार्थिव। त्वमीश्वरो नो राज्यस्य प्राणानां चेति भारत ॥१५-१९-१०॥
pradadātu bhavān vittaṃ yāvad icchasi pārthiva। tvam īśvaro no rājyasya prāṇānāṃ ceti bhārata ॥15-19-10॥
[प्रददातु (pradadātu) - may bestow; (imperative, let give; from pra-√dā); भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; यावत् (yāvat) - as much as; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - lord; master; नः (naḥ) - of us; राज्यस्य (rājyasya) - of the kingdom; प्राणानाम् (prāṇānām) - of lives; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(May you bestow wealth as much as you desire, O king. You are the lord of us, of the kingdom and of lives, thus, O Bhārata (Dhritarashtra). (15-19-10))
O king, may you give as much wealth as you desire. You are the lord of our kingdom and of our lives, O Bhārata. (15-19-10)
ब्रह्मदेयाग्रहारांश्च पुत्राणां चौर्ध्वदेहिकम्। इतो रत्नानि गाश्चैव दासीदासमजाविकम् ॥१५-१९-११॥
brahmadeyāgrāhārāṃś ca putrāṇāṃ ca ūrdhvadehikam। ito ratnāni gāś caiva dāsīdāsam ajāvikam ॥15-19-11॥
[ब्रह्मदेय-अग्रहारान् (brahmadeya-agrāhārān) - villages bestowed to brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; च (ca) - and; ऊर्ध्व-देहिकम् (ūrdhva-dehikam) - posthumous (after death, funeral) property; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; रत्नानि (ratnāni) - jewels; गाः (gāḥ) - cows; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दासी-दासम् (dāsī-dāsam) - female slaves and male slaves; अजाविकम् (ajāvikam) - goats and sheep;]
(And the villages bestowed to brāhmaṇas and the posthumous property of sons; from here, jewels and cows indeed, female slaves and male slaves, goats and sheep.)
The villages granted to brāhmaṇas and posthumous property of the sons, as well as jewels, cows, male and female slaves, and goats and sheep—all these things come from here. (15-19-11)
आनयित्वा कुरुश्रेष्ठो ब्राह्मणेभ्यः प्रयच्छतु। दीनान्धकृपणेभ्यश्च तत्र तत्र नृपाज्ञया ॥१५-१९-१२॥
ānayitvā kuruśreṣṭho brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchatu। dīnāndhakṛpaṇebhyaśca tatra tatra nṛpājñayā ॥15-19-12॥
[आनयित्वा (ānayitvā) - having brought; कुरुश्रेष्ठः (kuruśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best of the Kurus; ब्राह्मणेभ्यः (brāhmaṇebhyaḥ) - to the Brāhmaṇas; प्रयच्छतु (prayacchatu) - should give; दीन (dīna) - to the miserable; अन्ध (andha) - blind; कृपणेभ्यः (kṛpaṇebhyaḥ) - to the helpless; च (ca) - and; तत्र तत्र (tatra tatra) - here and there; नृपाज्ञया (nṛpājñayā) - by the king's order;]
(Having brought, the best of the Kurus should give to the Brāhmaṇas; and to the miserable, blind, and helpless, here and there, by the king's order.)
After bringing it, the foremost of the Kurus should distribute it to the Brāhmaṇas, and by the king's command, to the miserable, the blind, and the helpless at various places. (15-19-12)
बह्वन्नरसपानाढ्याः सभा विदुर कारय। गवां निपानान्यन्यच्च विविधं पुण्यकर्म यत् ॥१५-१९-१३॥
bahv-anna-rasa-pāna-āḍhyāḥ sabhā vidura kāraya। gavāṃ nipānāni anyat ca vividhaṃ puṇya-karma yat ॥15-19-13॥
[बहु-अन्न-रस-पान-आढ्याः (bahv-anna-rasa-pāna-āḍhyāḥ) - abounding in eating and drink of much food and essence; सभा (sabhā) - assembly-hall; विदुर (vidura) - Vidura; कारय (kāraya) - cause to be made; गवाम् (gavām) - of cows; निपानानि (nipānāni) - watering places; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; च (ca) - and; विविधम् (vividham) - various; पुण्यकर्म (puṇya-karma) - meritorious deeds; यत् (yat) - which;]
(Assembly hall abounding in eating and drink of much food and essence, Vidura, cause to be made; of cows watering places, other and various meritorious deeds which.)
Vidura, have an assembly hall abounding in the eating and drinking of much food and essence constructed; and make watering places for cows as well as other various meritorious acts. (15-19-13)
इति मामब्रवीद्राजा पार्थश्चैव धनञ्जयः। यदत्रानन्तरं कार्यं तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१५-१९-१४॥
iti mām abravīd rājā pārthaś ca eva dhanañjayaḥ। yad atra anantaraṃ kāryaṃ tad bhavān vaktum arhati॥15-19-14॥
[इति (iti) - thus; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; राजा (rājā) - king; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya; यत् (yat) - what; अत्र (atra) - here; अनन्तरम् (anantaram) - afterwards; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; तत् (tat) - that; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to say; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
(Thus to me spoke the king, Pārtha indeed and Dhanañjaya. What here afterwards is to be done, that you deserve to say.)
Thus the king, as well as Pārtha and Dhanañjaya, spoke to me: "Whatever work here is to be done next, you are worthy to declare that." (15-19-14)
इत्युक्तो विदुरेणाथ धृतराष्ट्रोऽभिनन्द्य तत्। मनश्चक्रे महादाने कार्त्तिक्यां जनमेजय ॥१५-१९-१५॥
ity ukto vidureṇa atha dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhinandya tat। manaś cakre mahādāne kārttikyāṃ janamejaya ॥15-19-15॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - being addressed; विदुरेण (vidureṇa) - by Vidura; अथ (atha) - then; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अभिनन्द्य (abhinandya) - having approved; तत् (tat) - that; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; चक्रे (cakre) - made; महादाने (mahādāne) - in the great gift (charity/event); कार्त्तिक्यां (kārttikyāṃ) - in the month of Kārttika; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya;]
(Thus being addressed by Vidura, then Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having approved that, made up his mind for the great gift in Kārttika, O Janamejaya.)
O Janamejaya, when thus addressed by Vidura, Dhṛtarāṣṭra approved it and resolved in his mind to perform the great gift during the month of Kārttika. (15-19-15)
