viduravākyam
Speech of Vidura;
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
evam uktas tu rājñā sa viduro buddhi-sattamaḥ. dhṛtarāṣṭram upetya idaṃ vākyam āha mahārthavat. 15-19-1
Thus, having been addressed by the king, Vidura, the wisest, approached Dhritarashtra and spoke these most meaningful words. (15-19-1)
ukto yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bhavadvacanam āditaḥ। sa ca saṃśrutya vākyaṃ te praśaśaṃsa mahādyutiḥ॥15-19-2॥
Yudhishthira the king, having been addressed with your words, after hearing your statement, the great resplendent one praised it. (15-19-2)
bībhatsuja ca mahātejaā nivedayati te gṛhān। vasu tasya gṛhe yac ca prāṇān api ca kevalān ॥15-19-3॥
Bībhatsu, the mighty and brilliant one, offers you his houses, whatever wealth is in his house, and even his very life itself. (15-19-3)
dharmarājaś ca putras te rājyaṃ prāṇān dhanāni ca। anujānāti rājarṣe yac cānyad api kiñcana॥15-19-4॥
O royal sage, King Dharma and your son permit you the kingdom, your life, your wealth, and anything else whatsoever. (15-19-4)
bhīmas tu sarvaduḥkhāni saṁsmṛtya bahulāny uta | kṛcchrād iva mahābāhur anumanye viniḥśvasan ॥15-19-5॥
But Bhīma, having remembered all the many sufferings, sighed deeply like one afflicted by hardship, and I think upon this the mighty-armed one. (15-19-5)
sa rājyā dharmaśīlena bhrātrā bībhatsunā tathā| anunīto mahābāhuḥ sauhṛde sthāpito'pi ca ||15-19-6||
He, persuaded by his brother, the virtuous king Bībhatsu (Arjuna), was established in friendship by the mighty-armed one also. (15-19-6)
na ca manyustvayā kārya iti tvāṃ prāha dharmarāṭ। saṃsmṛtya bhīmastadvairaṃ yadanyāyavadācaret ॥15-19-7॥
Dharmarāja said to you, "You should not act in anger." Remembering that enmity, Bhīma might act unjustly. (15-19-7)
evam-prāyo hi dharmo'yaṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ narādhipa। yuddhe kṣatriya-dharme ca nirato'yaṃ vṛkodaraḥ ॥15-19-8॥
O king, this is indeed the way of the kṣatriya duty. This Vṛkodara (Bhīma) is devoted to battle and the duties of a kṣatriya. (15-19-8)
vṛkodara-kṛte ca aham arjunaś ca punaḥ punaḥ । prasādayāva nṛpate bhavān prabhuḥ iha asti yat ॥15-19-9॥
For the sake of Vṛkodara, both Arjuna and I, again and again, let us appease you, O king; for your honour is the lord here as is appropriate. (15-19-9)
pradadātu bhavān vittaṃ yāvad icchasi pārthiva। tvam īśvaro no rājyasya prāṇānāṃ ceti bhārata ॥15-19-10॥
O king, may you give as much wealth as you desire. You are the lord of our kingdom and of our lives, O Bhārata. (15-19-10)
brahmadeyāgrāhārāṃś ca putrāṇāṃ ca ūrdhvadehikam। ito ratnāni gāś caiva dāsīdāsam ajāvikam ॥15-19-11॥
The villages granted to brāhmaṇas and posthumous property of the sons, as well as jewels, cows, male and female slaves, and goats and sheep—all these things come from here. (15-19-11)
ānayitvā kuruśreṣṭho brāhmaṇebhyaḥ prayacchatu। dīnāndhakṛpaṇebhyaśca tatra tatra nṛpājñayā ॥15-19-12॥
After bringing it, the foremost of the Kurus should distribute it to the Brāhmaṇas, and by the king's command, to the miserable, the blind, and the helpless at various places. (15-19-12)
bahv-anna-rasa-pāna-āḍhyāḥ sabhā vidura kāraya। gavāṃ nipānāni anyat ca vividhaṃ puṇya-karma yat ॥15-19-13॥
Vidura, have an assembly hall abounding in the eating and drinking of much food and essence constructed; and make watering places for cows as well as other various meritorious acts. (15-19-13)
iti mām abravīd rājā pārthaś ca eva dhanañjayaḥ। yad atra anantaraṃ kāryaṃ tad bhavān vaktum arhati॥15-19-14॥
Thus the king, as well as Pārtha and Dhanañjaya, spoke to me: "Whatever work here is to be done next, you are worthy to declare that." (15-19-14)
ity ukto vidureṇa atha dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhinandya tat। manaś cakre mahādāne kārttikyāṃ janamejaya ॥15-19-15॥
O Janamejaya, when thus addressed by Vidura, Dhṛtarāṣṭra approved it and resolved in his mind to perform the great gift during the month of Kārttika. (15-19-15)
