श्राद्धयज्ञः
A sacrifice performed with faith.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
विदुरेणैवमुक्तस्तु धृतराष्ट्रो जनाधिपः। प्रीतिमानभवद्राजा राज्ञो जिष्णोश्च कर्मणा ॥१५-२०-१॥
When Vidura thus spoke, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, became pleased on account of the actions of the king and of Jiṣṇu (Arjuna). (15-20-1)
ततोऽभिरूपान्भीष्माय ब्राह्मणानृषिसत्तमान्। पुत्रार्थे सुहृदां चैव स समीक्ष्य सहस्रशः ॥१५-२०-२॥
Then he, having considered by the thousands suitable brāhmaṇas and excellent sages, for Bhīṣma, for the sake of a son and the friends as well, (proceeded thus). (15-20-2)
कारयित्वान्नपानानि यानान्याच्छादनानि च। सुवर्णमणिरत्नानि दासीदासपरिच्छदान् ॥१५-२०-३॥
Having provided food and drink, vehicles, coverings, gold, jewels, gems, and the paraphernalia for female and male servants. (15-20-3)
कम्बलाजिनरत्नानि ग्रामान्क्षेत्रानजाविकम्। अलङ्कारान्गजानश्वान्कन्याश्चैव वरस्त्रियः ॥ आदिश्यादिश्य विप्रेभ्यो ददौ स नृपसत्तमः ॥१५-२०-४॥
That best among kings gave blankets, animal-skins, jewels, villages, fields, goats and sheep, ornaments, elephants, horses, girls, and excellent women again and again to the Brāhmaṇas. (15-20-4)
द्रोणं सङ्कीर्त्य भीष्मं च सोमदत्तं च बाह्लिकम्। दुर्योधनं च राजानं पुत्रांश्चैव पृथक्पृथक् ॥ जयद्रथपुरोगांश्च सुहृदश्चैव सर्वशः ॥१५-२०-५॥
He recalled Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Somadatta, Bāhlika, Duryodhana the king, the sons individually, as well as all the friends, including those headed by Jayadratha, completely. (15-20-5)
स श्राद्धयज्ञो ववृधे बहुगोधनदक्षिणः। अनेकधनरत्नौघो युधिष्ठिरमते तदा ॥१५-२०-६॥
At that time, the śrāddha sacrifice increased greatly with many cows and gifts of wealth, and with an abundance of riches and jewels, according to the decision of Yudhiṣṭhira. (15-20-6)
अनिशं यत्र पुरुषा गणका लेखकास्तथा। युधिष्ठिरस्य वचनात्तदापृच्छन्ति तं नृपम् ॥१५-२०-७॥
Wherever there are always men, accountants, and scribes, they inquire of that king in accordance with Yudhiṣṭhira's words. (15-20-7)
आज्ञापय किमेतेभ्यः प्रदेयं दीयतामिति। तदुपस्थितमेवात्र वचनान्ते प्रदृश्यते ॥१५-२०-८॥
Order what is to be given to these and let it be given, thus. That (intention) is indeed seen here at the end of the statement. (15-20-8)
शते देये दशशतं सहस्रे चायुतं तथा। दीयते वचनाद्राज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रस्य धीमतः ॥१५-२०-९॥
When a hundred is to be given, a thousand is granted; and for a thousand, likewise ten thousand is granted, by the command of the wise son of Kuntī, the king. (15-20-9)
एवं स वसुधाराभिर्वर्षमाणो नृपाम्बुदः। तर्पयामास विप्रांस्तान्वर्षन्भूमिमिवाम्बुदः ॥१५-२०-१०॥
In this way, the king, like a cloud pouring streams of gifts, satisfied those Brāhmaṇas just as a cloud rains upon the earth. (15-20-10)
ततोऽनन्तरमेवात्र सर्ववर्णान्महीपतिः। अन्नपानरसौघेन प्लावयामास पार्थिवः ॥१५-२०-११॥
Then, immediately afterwards, here, the king deluged all castes with a flood of food and drink. (15-20-11)
सवस्त्रफेनरत्नौघो मृदङ्गनिनदस्वनः। गवाश्वमकरावर्तो नारीरत्नमहाकरः ॥१५-२०-१२॥
A great river, having cloth, foam, heaps of jewels, the sound of mṛdaṅga drums, the noise of cows and horses, swirling with crocodiles, and adorned with women and gems. (15-20-12)
ग्रामाग्रहारकुल्याढ्यो मणिहेमजलार्णवः। जगत्सम्प्लावयामास धृतराष्ट्रदयाम्बुधिः ॥१५-२०-१३॥
The ocean of Dhritarashtra's compassion—rich with streams of villages and gifted lands, its waters being gems and gold—inundated the world. (15-20-13)
एवं स पुत्रपौत्राणां पितॄणामात्मनस्तथा। गान्धार्याश्च महाराज प्रददावौर्ध्वदेहिकम् ॥१५-२०-१४॥
Thus, O great king, he performed the funerary rites for the sons and grandsons, the ancestors, himself, and also for Gāndhārī. (15-20-14)
परिश्रान्तो यदासीत्स ददद्दानान्यनेकशः। ततो निर्वर्तयामास दानयज्ञं कुरूद्वहः ॥१५-२०-१५॥
When he was fatigued from repeatedly giving gifts, then he performed the gift-sacrifice, O best of the Kurus. (15-20-15)
एवं स राजा कौरव्यश्चक्रे दानमहोत्सवम्। नटनर्तकलास्याढ्यं बह्वन्नरसदक्षिणम् ॥१५-२०-१६॥
Thus King Kauravya performed a great festival of charity, which was full of actors, dancers, and performances, and abundant in food, delicacies, and generous gifts. (15-20-16)
दशाहमेवं दानानि दत्त्वा राजाम्बिकासुतः। बभूव पुत्रपौत्राणामनृणो भरतर्षभ ॥१५-२०-१७॥
O bull among the Bharatas, thus, having given gifts for ten days, the son of Queen Ambika was freed from obligations to his sons and grandsons. (15-20-17)
