कुन्त्युवाच॥
Kunti said.
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि पाण्डव। कृतमुद्धर्षणं पूर्वं मया वः सीदतां नृप ॥१५-२३-१॥
O mighty-armed Pāṇḍava, it is just as you say; previously, O king, I performed the restoration for you when you were in distress. (15-23-1)
द्यूतापहृतराज्यानां पतितानां सुखादपि। ज्ञातिभिः परिभूतानां कृतमुद्धर्षणं मया ॥१५-२३-२॥
I have done the uplifting of those who lost their kingdom by gambling, who had fallen even from happiness, and who were insulted by their own kinsmen. (15-23-2)
कथं पाण्डोर्न नश्येत सन्ततिः पुरुषर्षभाः। यशश्च वो न नश्येत इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-३॥
How might the progeny of Pāṇḍu not perish, O best of men, and how your fame might not perish—that is why encouragement was given. (15-23-3)
यूयमिन्द्रसमाः सर्वे देवतुल्यपराक्रमाः। मा परेषां मुखप्रेक्षाः स्थेत्येवं तत्कृतं मया ॥१५-२३-४॥
You are all as powerful as Indra, with valor equal to the gods; do not just stand by watching the faces of others—having so determined, I have acted accordingly. (15-23-4)
कथं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठो राजा त्वं वासवोपमः। पुनर्वने न दुःखी स्या इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-५॥
The best among upholders of dharma, you, the king equal to Indra, were encouraged so that you might not be sorrowful again in the forest. (15-23-5)
नागायुतसमप्राणः ख्यातविक्रमपौरुषः। नायं भीमोऽत्ययं गच्छेदिति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-६॥
Encouragement was given, saying, "Bhīma, who possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants and is renowned for his valor and manliness, would not meet with destruction." (15-23-6)
भीमसेनादवरजस्तथायं वासवोपमः। विजयो नावसीदेत इति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-७॥
Thus, encouragement was given to Vijaya, the younger brother of Bhīmasena and equal to Vāsava, so that he would not lose courage. (15-23-7)
नकुलः सहदेवश्च तथेमौ गुरुवर्तिनौ। क्षुधा कथं न सीदेतामिति चोद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-८॥
Nakula and Sahadeva—these two who attend their teacher—an exhortation was made, saying: “How could they not faint from hunger?” (15-23-8)
इयं च बृहती श्यामा श्रीमत्यायतलोचना। वृथा सभातले क्लिष्टा मा भूदिति च तत्कृतम् ॥१५-२३-९॥
And this tall, dark-complexioned, fortunate woman with large eyes, let her not be afflicted in vain in the assembly—thus, that was done. (15-23-9)
प्रेक्षन्त्या मे तदा हीमां वेपन्तीं कदलीमिव। स्त्रीधर्मिणीमनिन्द्याङ्गीं तथा द्यूतपराजिताम् ॥१५-२३-१०॥
Then, as I looked, I saw this woman of faultless limbs, truly trembling like a plantain, who, being endowed with womanly nature, had thus been defeated in the game of dice. (15-23-10)
दुःशासनो यदा मौढ्याद्दासीवत्पर्यकर्षत। तदैव विदितं मह्यं पराभूतमिदं कुलम् ॥१५-२३-११॥
When Duḥśāsana, out of folly, dragged (her) like a servant woman, at that very moment I knew: “This family is defeated.” (15-23-11)
विषण्णाः कुरवश्चैव तदा मे श्वशुरादयः। यदैषा नाथमिच्छन्ती व्यलपत्कुररी यथा ॥१५-२३-१२॥
The Kurus, and indeed my father-in-law and his kin, were dejected at that time, when she, longing for her husband, cried out like a female curlew. (15-23-12)
केशपक्षे परामृष्टा पापेन हतबुद्धिना। यदा दुःशासनेनैषा तदा मुह्याम्यहं नृप ॥१५-२३-१३॥
O king, whenever this lady is seized by her hair by Duḥśāsana, who is wicked and whose intellect is destroyed, then I lose my senses. (15-23-13)
युष्मत्तेजोविवृद्ध्यर्थं मया ह्युद्धर्षणं कृतम्। तदानीं विदुरावाक्यैरिति तद्वित्त पुत्रकाः ॥१५-२३-१४॥
In order to increase your energy, I indeed aroused excitement; at that time, by Vidura's words, so spoke the knower of this, O children. (15-23-14)
कथं न राजवंशोऽयं नश्येत्प्राप्य सुतान्मम। पाण्डोरिति मया पुत्र तस्मादुद्धर्षणं कृतम् ॥१५-२३-१५॥
How could this royal lineage perish, having obtained my sons? Therefore, O son, it is for this reason that I have caused the exultation, saying 'of Pāṇḍu.' (15-23-15)
न तस्य पुत्रः पौत्रौ वा कुत एव स पार्थिव। लभते सुकृताँल्लोकान्यस्माद्वंशः प्रणश्यति ॥१५-२३-१६॥
Neither his sons nor grandsons, nor the king himself, obtains the worlds earned by virtue, from whom the family has perished. (15-23-16)
भुक्तं राज्यफलं पुत्रा भर्तुर्मे विपुलं पुरा। महादानानि दत्तानि पीतः सोमो यथाविधि ॥१५-२३-१७॥
O sons, I have long ago enjoyed the great fruits of the kingdom of your father; great gifts have been given, and soma has been drunk according to the proper rite. (15-23-17)
साहं नात्मफलार्थं वै वासुदेवमचूचुदम्। विदुरायाः प्रलापैस्तैः प्लावनार्थं तु तत्कृतम् ॥१५-२३-१८॥
I did not worship Vāsudeva for my own gain; rather, I did so for the sake of alleviating the effects of Vidurā’s lamentations with those (words). (15-23-18)
नाहं राज्यफलं पुत्र कामये पुत्रनिर्जितम्। पतिलोकानहं पुण्यान्कामये तपसा विभो ॥१५-२३-१९॥
O son, I do not desire the fruit of the kingdom obtained by my son. O Lord, I do not wish for the abodes of my husband or other merits earned through austerities. (15-23-19)
श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोः कृत्वा शुश्रूषां वनवासिनोः। तपसा शोषयिष्यामि युधिष्ठिर कलेवरम् ॥१५-२३-२०॥
O Yudhiṣṭhira, having served my mother-in-law and father-in-law who dwell in the forest, I shall consume my body by austerities. (15-23-20)
निवर्तस्व कुरुश्रेष्ठ भीमसेनादिभिः सह। धर्मे ते धीयतां बुद्धिर्मनस्ते महदस्तु च ॥१५-२३-२१॥
O best of the Kurus, turn back together with Bhīmasena and the others; let your intellect be established in dharma, and may your mind be great. (15-23-21)
