kunty-uvāca॥
Kunti said.
evam etan mahā-bāho yathā vadasi pāṇḍava। kṛtam uddharṣaṇam pūrvam mayā vaḥ sīdatāṃ nṛpa॥15-23-1॥
O mighty-armed Pāṇḍava, it is just as you say; previously, O king, I performed the restoration for you when you were in distress. (15-23-1)
dyūtāpahṛtarājyānāṃ patitānāṃ sukhād api। jñātibhiḥ paribhūtānāṃ kṛtam uddharṣaṇaṃ mayā ॥15-23-2॥
I have done the uplifting of those who lost their kingdom by gambling, who had fallen even from happiness, and who were insulted by their own kinsmen. (15-23-2)
kathaṃ pāṇḍor na naśyet santatiḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। yaśaś ca vo na naśyet iti coddharṣaṇaṃ kṛtam ॥15-23-3॥
How might the progeny of Pāṇḍu not perish, O best of men, and how your fame might not perish—that is why encouragement was given. (15-23-3)
yūyam indra-samāḥ sarve deva-tulya-parākramāḥ। mā pareṣāṃ mukha-prekṣāḥ sthety evaṃ tat kṛtaṃ mayā॥15-23-4॥
You are all as powerful as Indra, with valor equal to the gods; do not just stand by watching the faces of others—having so determined, I have acted accordingly. (15-23-4)
kathaṁ dharmabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭho rājā tvaṁ vāsavopamaḥ। punarvane na duḥkhī syā iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-5॥
The best among upholders of dharma, you, the king equal to Indra, were encouraged so that you might not be sorrowful again in the forest. (15-23-5)
nāgāyutasamaprāṇaḥ khyātavikramapauruṣaḥ। nāyaṃ bhīmo'tyayaṃ gacchediti coddharṣaṇaṃ kṛtam ॥15-23-6॥
Encouragement was given, saying, "Bhīma, who possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants and is renowned for his valor and manliness, would not meet with destruction." (15-23-6)
bhīmasenād avarajas tathāyaṁ vāsavopamaḥ। vijayo nāvasīdet iti coddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-7॥
Thus, encouragement was given to Vijaya, the younger brother of Bhīmasena and equal to Vāsava, so that he would not lose courage. (15-23-7)
nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca tathemau guruvartinau। kṣudhā kathaṁ na sīdetām iti cod-dharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-8॥
Nakula and Sahadeva—these two who attend their teacher—an exhortation was made, saying: “How could they not faint from hunger?” (15-23-8)
iyaṃ ca bṛhatī śyāmā śrīmatyāyatalocanā। vṛthā sabhātale kliṣṭā mā bhūd iti ca tatkṛtam ॥15-23-9॥
And this tall, dark-complexioned, fortunate woman with large eyes, let her not be afflicted in vain in the assembly—thus, that was done. (15-23-9)
prekṣantyā me tadā hīmāṁ vepantīṁ kadalīm iva। strīdharminīṁ anindyāṅgīṁ tathā dyūta-parājitām ॥15-23-10॥
Then, as I looked, I saw this woman of faultless limbs, truly trembling like a plantain, who, being endowed with womanly nature, had thus been defeated in the game of dice. (15-23-10)
duḥśāsano yadā mauḍhyād dāsīvat paryakarṣata. tadaiva viditaṃ mahyaṃ parābhūtam idaṃ kulam ॥15-23-11॥
When Duḥśāsana, out of folly, dragged (her) like a servant woman, at that very moment I knew: “This family is defeated.” (15-23-11)
viṣaṇṇāḥ kuravaścaiva tadā me śvaśurādayaḥ। yadaiṣā nātham icchantī vyalapat kurarī yathā॥15-23-12॥
The Kurus, and indeed my father-in-law and his kin, were dejected at that time, when she, longing for her husband, cried out like a female curlew. (15-23-12)
keśapakṣe parāmṛṣṭā pāpena hatabuddhinā। yadā duḥśāsanenaiṣā tadā muhyāmyahaṃ nṛpa ॥15-23-13॥
O king, whenever this lady is seized by her hair by Duḥśāsana, who is wicked and whose intellect is destroyed, then I lose my senses. (15-23-13)
yuṣmat-tejo-vivṛddhy-arthaṃ mayā hy uddharṣaṇaṃ kṛtam। tadānīṃ vidura-vākyair iti tad-vitta putrakāḥ ॥15-23-14॥
In order to increase your energy, I indeed aroused excitement; at that time, by Vidura's words, so spoke the knower of this, O children. (15-23-14)
kathaṁ na rājavaṁśo'yaṁ naśyetprāpya sutānmama। pāṇḍoriti mayā putra tasmāduddharṣaṇaṁ kṛtam ॥15-23-15॥
How could this royal lineage perish, having obtained my sons? Therefore, O son, it is for this reason that I have caused the exultation, saying 'of Pāṇḍu.' (15-23-15)
na tasya putraḥ pautrau vā kuta eva sa pārthiva। labhate sukṛtā̱ṃllokān-yasmād-vaṃśaḥ praṇaśyati॥15-23-16॥
Neither his sons nor grandsons, nor the king himself, obtains the worlds earned by virtue, from whom the family has perished. (15-23-16)
bhuktaṃ rājya-phalaṃ putrā bhartur me vipulaṃ purā। mahā-dānāni dattāni pītaḥ somo yathā-vidhi ॥15-23-17॥
O sons, I have long ago enjoyed the great fruits of the kingdom of your father; great gifts have been given, and soma has been drunk according to the proper rite. (15-23-17)
sāhaṃ nātmaphalārthaṃ vai vāsudevam acūcudam। vidurāyāḥ pralāpais taiḥ plāvanārthaṃ tu tatkṛtam ॥15-23-18॥
I did not worship Vāsudeva for my own gain; rather, I did so for the sake of alleviating the effects of Vidurā’s lamentations with those (words). (15-23-18)
nāhaṃ rājyaphalaṃ putra kāmaye putranirjitam। patilokānahaṃ puṇyānkāmaye tapasā vibho ॥15-23-19॥
O son, I do not desire the fruit of the kingdom obtained by my son. O Lord, I do not wish for the abodes of my husband or other merits earned through austerities. (15-23-19)
śvaśrūśvaśurayoḥ kṛtvā śuśrūṣāṃ vanavāsinoḥ। tapasā śoṣayiṣyāmi yudhiṣṭhira kalevaram ॥15-23-20॥
O Yudhiṣṭhira, having served my mother-in-law and father-in-law who dwell in the forest, I shall consume my body by austerities. (15-23-20)
nivartasva kuruśreṣṭha bhīmasenādibhiḥ saha। dharme te dhīyatāṃ buddhir manas te mahad astu ca॥15-23-21॥
O best of the Kurus, turn back together with Bhīmasena and the others; let your intellect be established in dharma, and may your mind be great. (15-23-21)
