कच्चिद्वर्तसि पौराणीं वृत्तिं राजर्षिसेविताम्। कच्चिद्दायाननुच्छिद्य कोशस्तेऽभिप्रपूर्यते ॥१५-३३-३॥
kaccid vartasi paurāṇīṃ vṛttiṃ rājarṣi-sevitām। kaccid dāyān anucchidya kośas te'bhiprapūryate ॥15-33-3॥

अरिमध्यस्थमित्रेषु वर्तसे चानुरूपतः। ब्राह्मणानग्रहारैर्वा यथावदनुपश्यसि ॥१५-३३-४॥
arimadhyastha-mitreṣu vartase cānurūpataḥ। brāhmaṇān-agrāhārair vā yathāvad anupaśyasi॥15-33-4॥

kaccit-strī-bāla-vṛddhaṃ te na śocati na yācate. jāmayaḥ pūjitāḥ kaccit-tava gehe nararṣabha ॥15-33-8॥

kaccid rājarṣivaṃśo 'yaṃ tvām āsādya mahīpatim। yathocitaṃ mahārāja yaśasā nāvasīdati॥15-33-9॥

ityevaṃvā Dinaṃ taṃ sa nyāyavitpratyabhāṣata। kuśalapraśnasaṃyuktaṃ kuśalo vākyakarmaṇi ॥15-33-10॥

कच्चित्ते वर्धते राजंस्तपो मन्दश्रमस्य ते। अपि मे जननी चेयं शुश्रूषुर्विगतक्लमा ॥ अप्यस्याः सफलो राजन्वनवासो भविष्यति ॥१५-३३-११॥
kaccitte vardhate rājanstapo mandaśramasya te। api me jananī ceyaṁ śuśrūṣurvigataklamā ॥ apyasyāḥ saphalo rājanvanavāso bhaviṣyati ॥15-33-11॥

"O King, I hope the austerity for you, performed with mild exertion, is increasing. Also, I hope my mother here, attentive and free from fatigue, finds fruitful her stay in the forest, O King." (15-33-11)
इयं च माता ज्येष्ठा मे वीतवाताध्वकर्शिता। घोरेण तपसा युक्ता देवी कच्चिन्न शोचति ॥१५-३३-१२॥
iyaṃ ca mātā jyeṣṭhā me vītavātādhvakarśitā। ghoreṇa tapasā yuktā devī kaccinna śocati॥15-33-12॥

And this eldest mother of mine, worn out by the wind and the hardships of travel, engaged in severe austerity—does the lady not grieve? (15-33-12)
हतान्पुत्रान्महावीर्यान्क्षत्रधर्मपरायणान्। नापध्यायति वा कच्चिदस्मान्पापकृतः सदा ॥१५-३३-१३॥
hatān putrān mahāvīryān kṣatradharma-parāyaṇān। na apadhyāyati vā kaccid asmān pāpakṛtḥ sadā॥15-33-13॥

क्व चासौ विदुरो राजन्नैनं पश्यामहे वयम्। सञ्जयः कुशली चायं कच्चिन्नु तपसि स्थितः ॥१५-३३-१४॥
kva cāsau viduro rājan nainaṁ paśyāmahe vayam। sañjayaḥ kuśalī cāyaṁ kaccinnu tapasi sthitaḥ ॥15-33-14॥

O King, where is this Vidura? We do not see him. Is Sañjaya well, and is he surely engaged in austerity? (15-33-14)
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचेदं धृतराष्ट्रो जनाधिपम्। कुशली विदुरः पुत्र तपो घोरं समास्थितः ॥१५-३३-१५॥
ityuktaḥ pratyuvācedaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭro janādhipam। kuśalī viduraḥ putra tapo ghoraṃ samāsthitaḥ ॥15-33-15॥

वायुभक्षो निराहारः कृशो धमनिसन्ततः। कदाचिद्दृश्यते विप्रैः शून्येऽस्मिन्कानने क्वचित् ॥१५-३३-१६॥
vāyubhakṣo nirāhāraḥ kṛśo dhamanisantataḥ। kadācid dṛśyate vipraiḥ śūnye 'smin kānane kvacit॥15-33-16॥

(Air-eater, without food, emaciated, veins-covered, sometimes is seen by brahmins, in the empty, in this forest, somewhere.)
A person who subsists on air alone, without food, emaciated and covered with veins, is sometimes seen by brahmins somewhere in this empty forest. (15-33-16)
इत्येवं वदतस्तस्य जटी वीटामुखः कृशः। दिग्वासा मलदिग्धाङ्गो वनरेणुसमुक्षितः ॥१५-३३-१७॥
ityevaṁ vadatas tasya jaṭī vīṭāmukhaḥ kṛśaḥ। digvāsā maladigdhāṅgo vanareṇusamukṣitaḥ ॥15-33-17॥

(O! O! Vidura, the king, I, the beloved of you, Yudhishthira—thus speaking, the king with effort approached him.)
Calling out “O! O! Vidura, I am the king, your beloved, Yudhishthira”—speaking thus, the king hurriedly approached him with effort. (15-33-20)
ततो विविक्त एकान्ते तस्थौ बुद्धिमतां वरः। विदुरो वृक्षमाश्रित्य कञ्चित्तत्र वनान्तरे ॥१५-३३-२१॥
tato vivikta ekānte tasthau buddhimatāṃ varaḥ। viduro vṛkṣam āśritya kañcit tatra vanāntare ॥15-33-21॥

(Then, in a solitary secluded place, stood the best of the wise, Vidura, resorting to a certain tree there in the interior of the forest.)
Then Vidura, the best among the wise, stood alone in a secluded forest, taking shelter under a certain tree. (15-33-21)
तं राजा क्षीणभूयिष्ठमाकृतीमात्रसूचितम्। अभिजज्ञे महाबुद्धिं महाबुद्धिर्युधिष्ठिरः ॥१५-३३-२२॥

The king, greatly diminished and recognizable only by his appearance, was recognized as the great-minded one; the great-minded Yudhiṣṭhira. (15-33-22)
युधिष्ठिरोऽहमस्मीति वाक्यमुक्त्वाग्रतः स्थितः। विदुरस्याश्रवे राजा स च प्रत्याह सञ्ज्ञया ॥१५-३३-२३॥
yudhiṣṭhiro'hamasmīti vākyamuktvāgrataḥ sthitaḥ. vidurasyaāśrave rājā sa ca pratyāha sañjñayā ॥15-33-23॥

(Yudhiṣṭhira I am thus speech having spoken in front stood. Of Vidura in the hearing the king he and responded with a sign.)
Having said, "I am Yudhiṣṭhira," he stood at the front. The king, in Vidura’s hearing, replied with a gesture. (15-33-23)
ततः सोऽनिमिषो भूत्वा राजानं समुदैक्षत। संयोज्य विदुरस्तस्मिन्दृष्टिं दृष्ट्या समाहितः ॥१५-३३-२४॥
tataḥ so'nimiṣo bhūtvā rājānaṁ samudaikṣata. saṁyojya viduras tasmin dṛṣṭiṁ dṛṣṭyā samāhitaḥ ॥15-33-24॥

(Then he, having become unblinking, looked intently at the king. Having fixed his gaze upon him, Vidura, with his look, was attentive.)
Then, becoming unblinking, he looked intently at the king; Vidura, after fixing his gaze upon him, attentively watched with focused eyes. (15-33-24)
विवेश विदुरो धीमान्गात्रैर्गात्राणि चैव ह। प्राणान्प्राणेषु च दधदिन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियेषु च ॥१५-३३-२५॥
viveśa viduro dhīmān gātrair gātrāṇi caiva ha। prāṇān prāṇeṣu ca dadhad indriyāṇi indriyeṣu ca ॥15-33-25॥

(He entered, Vidura, the wise, by limbs (he placed) the limbs, and indeed verily; life-breaths into the life-breaths and placing the senses into the senses.)
The wise Vidura entered, having joined each limb to its limbed counterpart, the life-breaths into the life-breaths, and the senses into the senses. (15-33-25)
स योगबलमास्थाय विवेश नृपतेस्तनुम्। विदुरो धर्मराजस्य तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव ॥१५-३३-२६॥
sa yogabalam āsthāya viveśa nṛpateḥ tanum । viduraḥ dharmarājasya tejasā prajvalan iva ॥15-33-26॥

(He, having assumed the strength of yoga, entered the body of the king; Vidura, of Dharmarāja, by the splendor, shining as if.)
Vidura, empowered by the strength of yoga, entered the king's body; he appeared to be shining with the splendor of Dharmarāja, as if ablaze. (15-33-26)
विदुरस्य शरीरं तत्तथैव स्तब्धलोचनम्। वृक्षाश्रितं तदा राजा ददर्श गतचेतनम् ॥१५-३३-२७॥
vidurasya śarīraṃ tattathaiva stabdhalocanam। vṛkṣāśritaṃ tadā rājā dadarśa gatacetanam ॥15-33-27॥

The king then saw the body of Vidura, with fixed eyes, resting by a tree, with life departed. (15-33-27)
बलवन्तं तथात्मानं मेने बहुगुणं तदा। धर्मराजो महातेजास्तच्च सस्मार पाण्डवः ॥१५-३३-२८॥
balavantaṃ tathātmānaṃ mene bahuguṇaṃ tadā। dharmarājo mahātejāstacca sasmāra pāṇḍavaḥ ॥15-33-28॥
[बलवन्तं (balavantaṃ) - strong; तथा (tathā) - thus; आत्मानं (ātmānaṃ) - own self; मेने (mene) - considered; बहुगुणं (bahuguṇaṃ) - having many qualities; तदा (tadā) - then; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); महातेजाः (mahātejāḥ) - greatly powerful; तच्च (tacca) - and that; सस्मार (sasmāra) - remembered; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu (i.e., Yudhiṣṭhira);]
(Strong thus own self considered to be possessing many qualities, then Dharmarāja, greatly powerful, and that remembered, the Pāṇḍava.)
Then Dharmarāja, the greatly powerful Pāṇḍava, considered himself to be strong and possessing many qualities, and remembered that. (15-33-28)
पौराणमात्मनः सर्वं विद्यावान्स विशां पते। योगधर्मं महातेजा व्यासेन कथितं यथा ॥१५-३३-२९॥
paurāṇam ātmanaḥ sarvaṃ vidyāvān sa viśāṃ pate. yogadharmaṃ mahātejā vyāsena kathitaṃ yathā ॥15-33-29॥

(Ancient (traditional) of oneself all possessed of knowledge he, O lord of men, the duty of yoga, of great splendor, by Vyāsa, spoken as.)
O lord of men, he who possessed all ancient knowledge of self, of great splendor, described the duty of yoga as it was spoken by Vyāsa. (15-33-29)
धर्मराजस्तु तत्रैनं सञ्चस्कारयिषुस्तदा। दग्धुकामोऽभवद्विद्वानथ वै वागभाषत ॥१५-३३-३०॥
dharmarājas tu tatra enaṃ sañcaskārayiṣus tadā। dagdhukāmo 'bhavad vidvān atha vai vāg abhāṣata ॥15-33-30॥
[धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - King of Dharma; Yudhiṣṭhira; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; एनम् (enam) - him; सञ्चस्कारयिषुः (sañcaskārayiṣuḥ) - wishing to perform the funeral rites; तदा (tadā) - then; दग्धुकामः (dagdhukāmaḥ) - desiring to burn; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise one; अथ (atha) - then; वै (vai) - indeed; वाक् (vāk) - speech; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke;]
(King Dharma-rāja but there him wishing to perform the funeral rites then desiring to burn became the wise one then indeed speech spoke.)
But King Dharma-rāja, wishing to perform the funeral rites for him there, then became desirous to burn (the body); then indeed, speech (a voice) spoke. (15-33-30)
भो भो राजन्न दग्धव्यमेतद्विदुरसञ्ज्ञकम्। कलेवरमिहैतत्ते धर्म एष सनातनः ॥१५-३३-३१॥
bho bho rājan dagdhyam etad vidura-saṃjñakam। kalevaram iha etat te dharma eṣa sanātanaḥ॥15-33-31॥
[भो भो (bho bho) - O! O!; राजन्न् (rājan) - O king; दग्धव्यम् (dagdhyam) - must be burned; एतत् (etat) - this; विदुरसञ्ज्ञकम् (vidura-saṃjñakam) - called Vidura; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body; इह (iha) - here; एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - your; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(O! O! O king, this called Vidura must be burned, this body here; this is your duty, this is eternal.)
O King, O King! This body here called Vidura must be burned; this is your duty, this is the eternal law. (15-33-31)
लोकाः सन्तानका नाम भविष्यन्त्यस्य पार्थिव। यतिधर्ममवाप्तोऽसौ नैव शोच्यः परन्तप ॥१५-३३-३२॥
lokāḥ santānakā nāma bhaviṣyantyasya pārthiva। yatidharmamavāpto'sau naiva śocyaḥ parantapa ॥15-33-32॥
[लोकाः (lokāḥ) - worlds; (realms of existence); सन्तानका (santānakā) - descendants; progeny; नाम (nāma) - named; called; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; will be; अस्य (asya) - his; of him; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; prince; यतिधर्मम् (yatidharmam) - the way of ascetics; rule of ascetics; अवाप्तः (avāptaḥ) - attained; obtained; असौ (asau) - he; that person; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; शोच्यः (śocyaḥ) - to be mourned; deserving grief; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes;]
(Worlds, descendants named, will become of him, O king. The way of ascetics attained, he indeed is not to be mourned, O scorcher of foes.)
O king, descendants bearing his name will arise in the worlds. Since he has attained the path of ascetics, he is indeed not to be mourned, O scorcher of foes. (15-33-32)
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजः स विनिवृत्य ततः पुनः। राज्ञो वैचित्रवीर्यस्य तत्सर्वं प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥१५-३३-३३॥
ity-ukto dharmarājaḥ sa vinivṛtya tataḥ punaḥ। rājño vaicitravīryasya tat sarvaṃ pratyavedayat॥15-33-33॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; स (sa) - he; विनिवृत्य (vinivṛtya) - having returned; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - to the king; वैचित्रवीर्यस्य (vaicitravīryasya) - of Vicitravīrya's (descendant); तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; प्रत्यवेदयत् (pratyavedayat) - he reported;]
(Thus having been addressed, Dharmarāja, having returned from there again, to the king, of Vicitravīrya's (descendant), that all he reported.)
Thus addressed, Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) returned again from there and reported all that to the king, the descendant of Vicitravīrya. (15-33-33)
ततः स राजा द्युतिमान्स च सर्वो जनस्तदा। भीमसेनादयश्चैव परं विस्मयमागताः ॥१५-३३-३४॥
tataḥ sa rājā dyutimān sa ca sarvo janas tadā। bhīmasenādayaś caiva paraṃ vismayam āgatāḥ ॥15-33-34॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; द्युतिमान् (dyutimān) - radiant; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; सर्वः (sarvaḥ) - all; जनः (janaḥ) - people; तदा (tadā) - then; भीमसेनादयः (bhīmasenādayaḥ) - Bhīmasena and others; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; परम् (param) - great; विस्मयम् (vismayam) - astonishment; आगताः (āgatāḥ) - attained;]
(Then he, the radiant king, and all the people then, Bhīmasena and others also indeed, great astonishment attained.)
Then the radiant king, all the people, and Bhīmasena and the rest were greatly astonished. (15-33-34)
तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रीतिमान्राजा भूत्वा धर्मजमब्रवीत्। आपो मूलं फलं चैव ममेदं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥१५-३३-३५॥
tacchrutvā prītimān rājā bhūtvā dharmajam abravīt। āpaḥ mūlaṁ phalaṁ ca eva mama idaṁ pratigṛhyatām॥15-33-35॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of joy; राजा (rājā) - the king; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; धर्मजम् (dharmajam) - born of dharma; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; आपः (āpaḥ) - water; मूलम् (mūlam) - root; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मम (mama) - my; इदम् (idam) - this; प्रतिगृह्यताम् (pratigṛhyatām) - let it be accepted;]
(That having heard, full of joy the king, having become, to (the one) born of dharma spoke: "Water, root, fruit and indeed this of mine, let it be accepted." (15-33-35))
Having heard that, the king, filled with joy, addressed the dharma-born one: "Please accept this water, root, and fruit of mine." (15-33-35)
यदन्नो हि नरो राजंस्तदन्नोऽस्यातिथिः स्मृतः। इत्युक्तः स तथेत्येव प्राह धर्मात्मजो नृपम् ॥ फलं मूलं च बुभुजे राज्ञा दत्तं सहानुजः ॥१५-३३-३६॥
yadanno hi naro rājaṃstadanno'syātithiḥ smṛtaḥ। ityuktaḥ sa tathetyeva prāha dharmātmajo nṛpam ॥ phalaṃ mūlaṃ ca bubhuje rājñā dattaṃ sahānujaḥ ॥15-33-36॥
[यदन्नः (yad-annaḥ) - whatever food; हि (hi) - indeed; नरः (naraḥ) - a man; राजंन् (rājan) - O king; तदन्नः (tad-annaḥ) - that food; अस्य (asya) - by him; अतिथिः (atithiḥ) - guest; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been said; सः (saḥ) - he; तथैति (tatha-iti) - so be it; एव (eva) - indeed; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; धर्मात्मजः (dharmātmajaḥ) - son of Dharma; नृपम् (nṛpam) - to the king; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; मूलम् (mūlam) - root; च (ca) - and; बुभुजे (bubhuje) - ate; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; दत्तम् (dattam) - given; सह (saha) - with; अनुजः (anujaḥ) - younger brother;]
(Whatever food indeed a man, O king, (has), that food by him the guest is considered. Thus having been said, he indeed spoke "so be it"—the son of Dharma to the king. Fruit, root and (he) ate, given by the king, with his younger brother.)
O king, whatever food a man has, that food is considered as for his guest. Thus addressed, the son of Dharma said "so be it" to the king, and together with his younger brother, ate the fruit and roots given by the king. (15-33-36)
ततस्ते वृक्षमूलेषु कृतवासपरिग्रहाः। तां रात्रिं न्यवसन्सर्वे फलमूलजलाशनाः ॥१५-३३-३७॥
tatas te vṛkṣamūleṣu kṛtavāsaparigrahāḥ। tāṃ rātriṃ nyavasan sarve phalamūlajalāśanāḥ॥15-33-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; वृक्ष-मूलेषु (vṛkṣa-mūleṣu) - at the bases of trees; कृत-वास-परिग्रहाः (kṛta-vāsa-parigrahāḥ) - having made arrangements for dwelling; तां (tāṃ) - that; रात्रिम् (rātrim) - night; न्यवसन् (nyavasan) - spent; सर्वे (sarve) - all; फल-मूल-जल-आशनाः (phala-mūla-jala-āśanāḥ) - those who eat fruits, roots, and water;]
(Then they, having made dwelling arrangements at the bases of trees, all who subsist on fruits, roots, and water, spent that night.)
