व्यासागमनम्
Arrival of Vyāsa;
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
एवं सा रजनी तेषामाश्रमे पुण्यकर्मणाम्। शिवा नक्षत्रसम्पन्ना सा व्यतीयाय भारत ॥१५-३४-१॥
Thus, O Bhārata, that auspicious night, endowed with favorable stars, passed in the hermitage of those meritorious ones. (15-34-1)
तत्र तत्र कथाश्चासंस्तेषां धर्मार्थलक्षणाः। विचित्रपदसञ्चारा नानाश्रुतिभिरन्विताः ॥१५-३४-२॥
In various places, their stories, marked by the qualities of dharma and artha, were composed with varied word arrangements and were accompanied by diverse recitations. (15-34-2)
पाण्डवास्त्वभितो मातुर्धरण्यां सुषुपुस्तदा। उत्सृज्य सुमहार्हाणि शयनानि नराधिप ॥१५-३४-३॥
But the Pāṇḍavas, O king, slept on the ground around their mother, having given up their very costly beds. (15-34-3)
यदाहारोऽभवद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रो महामनाः। तदाहारा नृवीरास्ते न्यवसंस्तां निशां तदा ॥१५-३४-४॥
When the food was taken by king Dhritarashtra, the great-minded one, then those heroic men spent that night with the same food. (15-34-4)
व्यतीतायां तु शर्वर्यां कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियः। भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयो ददर्शाश्रममण्डलम् ॥१५-३४-५॥
But when the night had passed, having performed the morning rituals, the son of Kunti, together with his brothers, saw the hermitage area. (15-34-5)
सान्तःपुरपरीवारः सभृत्यः सपुरोहितः। यथासुखं यथोद्देशं धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञया ॥१५-३४-६॥
With his retinue from the inner quarters, attendants, and family priest, (he proceeded) as comfortably and as intended, with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's permission. (15-34-6)
ददर्श तत्र वेदीश्च सम्प्रज्वलितपावकाः। कृताभिषेकैर्मुनिभिर्हुताग्निभिरुपस्थिताः ॥१५-३४-७॥
He saw there altars with blazing fire, attended by sages who had performed ritual ablutions and offerings into the fire, and were present. (15-34-7)
वानेयपुष्पनिकरैराज्यधूमोद्गमैरपि। ब्राह्मेण वपुषा युक्ता युक्ता मुनिगणैश्च ताः ॥१५-३४-८॥
Those (deities) adorned with clusters of forest-flowers, as well as with streams of clarified butter's smoke, possessed of a divine form and accompanied by groups of sages, (appeared there). (15-34-8)
मृगयूथैरनुद्विग्नैस्तत्र तत्र समाश्रितैः। अशङ्कितैः पक्षिगणैः प्रगीतैरिव च प्रभो ॥१५-३४-९॥
O lord, the place, with un-agitated herds of deer taking shelter here and there and un-fearful flocks of birds, seemed as if filled with their songs. (15-34-9)
केकाभिर्नीलकण्ठानां दात्यूहानां च कूजितैः। कोकिलानां च कुहरैः शुभैः श्रुतिमनोहरैः ॥१५-३४-१०॥
The cries of blue-throated birds, the cooings of cranes, and the auspicious, melodious songs of cuckoos delighted the ear. (15-34-10)
प्राधीतद्विजघोषैश्च क्वचित्क्वचिदलङ्कृतम्। फलमूलसमुद्वाहैर्महद्भिश्चोपशोभितम् ॥१५-३४-११॥
It was decorated here and there by the melodious cries of birds and adorned with heavy loads of fruit and roots. (15-34-11)
ततः स राजा प्रददौ तापसार्थमुपाहृतान्। कलशान्काञ्चनान्राजंस्तथैवौदुम्बरानपि ॥१५-३४-१२॥
Then the king gave to the ascetics the golden water pots and, in the same way, udumbara-wood vessels as well, O king. (15-34-12)
अजिनानि प्रवेणीश्च स्रुक्स्रुवं च महीपतिः। कमण्डलूंस्तथा स्थालीः पिठराणि च भारत ॥१५-३४-१३॥
O Bhārata, the king (gave) deer skins, braided hair-ornaments, wooden ladle and spoon, water pots, cooking pots, and jars. (15-34-13)
भाजनानि च लौहानि पात्रीश्च विविधा नृप। यद्यदिच्छति यावच्च यदन्यदपि काङ्क्षितम् ॥१५-३४-१४॥
O king, (there are) vessels and iron objects, as well as bowls of various kinds; whatever you desire, as much as you wish, and anything else that is desired. (15-34-14)
एवं स राजा धर्मात्मा परीत्याश्रममण्डलम्। वसु विश्राण्य तत्सर्वं पुनरायान्महीपतिः ॥१५-३४-१५॥
Thus, the righteous-souled king circled the region of hermitages, gave away all the wealth, and then the lord of the earth returned again. (15-34-15)
कृताह्निकं च राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम्। ददर्शासीनमव्यग्रं गान्धारीसहितं तदा ॥१५-३४-१६॥
Then he saw the wise king Dhritarashtra, who had performed his daily rites, sitting undisturbed together with Gandhari. (15-34-16)
मातरं चाविदूरस्थां शिष्यवत्प्रणतां स्थिताम्। कुन्तीं ददर्श धर्मात्मा सततं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥१५-३४-१७॥
The righteous one saw his mother Kuntī, standing not far away, bowed like a disciple, always practicing dharma. (15-34-17)
स तमभ्यर्च्य राजानं नाम संश्राव्य चात्मनः। निषीदेत्यभ्यनुज्ञातो बृस्यामुपविवेश ह ॥१५-३४-१८॥
Having honored the king and announced his own name, when permitted with the words 'sit', he indeed sat down on the seat. (15-34-18)
भीमसेनादयश्चैव पाण्डवाः कौरवर्षभम्। अभिवाद्योपसङ्गृह्य निषेदुः पार्थिवाज्ञया ॥१५-३४-१९॥
Bhīmasena and the other Pāṇḍavas respectfully saluted and embraced the eminent Kaurava, then sat down at the king's command. (15-34-19)
स तैः परिवृतो राजा शुशुभेऽतीव कौरवः। बिभ्रद्ब्राह्मीं श्रियं दीप्तां देवैरिव बृहस्पतिः ॥१५-३४-२०॥
Surrounded by those attendants, the Kaurava king shone with exceeding brilliance, bearing radiant brahmanic glory like Bṛhaspati among the gods. (15-34-20)
तथा तेषूपविष्टेषु समाजग्मुर्महर्षयः। शतयूपप्रभृतयः कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः ॥१५-३४-२१॥
Thus, when they had taken their seats, the great sages, including Śatayūpa and others who resided in Kurukṣetra, arrived. (15-34-21)
व्यासश्च भगवान्विप्रो देवर्षिगणपूजितः। वृतः शिष्यैर्महातेजा दर्शयामास तं नृपम् ॥१५-३४-२२॥
Vyāsa, the revered sage honored by groups of divine sages, surrounded by his disciples and possessing great splendor, showed him to the king. (15-34-22)
ततः स राजा कौरव्यः कुन्तीपुत्रश्च वीर्यवान्। भीमसेनादयश्चैव समुत्थायाभ्यपूजयन् ॥१५-३४-२३॥
Then that king of the Kauravas, along with the mighty son of Kuntī and Bhīmasena and the others, respectfully rose and honored (him). (15-34-23)
समागतस्ततो व्यासः शतयूपादिभिर्वृतः। धृतराष्ट्रं महीपालमास्यतामित्यभाषत ॥१५-३४-२४॥
Then Vyāsa, having arrived and surrounded by Śatayūpa and others, said, "Let king Dhṛtarāṣṭra be seated." (15-34-24)
नवं तु विष्टरं कौश्यं कृष्णाजिनकुशोत्तरम्। प्रतिपेदे तदा व्यासस्तदर्थमुपकल्पितम् ॥१५-३४-२५॥
But then Vyāsa obtained a new silken seat, with black-deer skin and kuśa grass arranged above, prepared for that purpose. (15-34-25)
ते च सर्वे द्विजश्रेष्ठा विष्टरेषु समन्ततः। द्वैपायनाभ्यनुज्ञाता निषेदुर्विपुलौजसः ॥१५-३४-२६॥
Then all those best among the twice-born, having been permitted by Dvaipayana, sat down on the seats all around, endowed with great strength. (15-34-26)
