The grief of Yudhiṣṭhira.
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
Thus, while that great-souled one was engaged in severe austerities, death stood among us relatives just as it does for one who has no protector. (15-46-1)
Indeed, I consider the paths of men to be difficult to understand, for there, Vichitravirya was burned in this way by a forest fire. (15-46-2)
The king, who had a hundred sons and was prosperous, endowed with strong arms and the strength of ten thousand elephants, was indeed burned by a forest fire. (15-46-3)
The one whom noble women once fanned with palm-leaf fans, vultures now fan, his body burned by the forest fire. (15-46-4)
He, the king, who is awakened by groups of charioteers and bards while lying down, now lies on the earth due to my evil actions. (15-46-5)
But I do not grieve for Gandhari, the illustrious one, whose son has been slain, who has attained the world of her husband, and who has remained steadfast in her vow to her husband. (15-46-6)
But I grieve for Pṛthā alone, who, giving up the great and splendid prosperity of her sons' sovereignty, chose a life in the forest. (15-46-7)
Shame upon this kingdom of ours, shame upon strength, shame upon valor. Shame upon our kṣatriya duty and upon us, that we continue to live when those (others) have died. (15-46-8)
O best of excellent twice-born, the course of time is indeed very subtle; for she, having completely abandoned the kingdom, chose life in the forest. (15-46-9)
Thinking, I am bewildered as to how the mother of Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, and Vijaya was burned like an orphan. (15-46-10)
I think Agni was gratified in vain in the Khāṇḍava forest by Savyasācin (Arjuna); for one who does not recognize favor is ungrateful—this is my opinion. (15-46-11)
Where the illustrious Savyasācin burnt his own mother—where, having taken the guise of a Brahmin and seeking alms, he approached—fie upon the fire, and also upon the much-praised truthfulness of Pārtha! (15-46-12)
O revered sir, another thing, even more difficult, appears to me: that the association with useless fire occurred to the lord of the earth. (15-46-13)
Thus, for this ascetic royal sage of the Kaurava line, indeed, how has such a death come to him, after having ruled this earth? (15-46-14)
While residing among his mantra-purified fires in the great forest, accompanied by a useless fire, my father reached his end. (15-46-15)
I think Pṛthā, trembling and thin with pronounced veins, cried out in great fear, "Alas! O father, O Dharma-rāja!" (15-46-16)
O Bhīma, my mother, uttering "Come near out of fear," became surrounded on all sides by the forest fire. (15-46-17)
Sahadeva was truly more beloved to her than her other sons, but the heroic son of Mādravatī did not release her. (15-46-18)
Having heard that, all the five Pāṇḍavas, afficted with grief, wept, embracing each other, like creatures at the end of an age. (15-46-19)
But the sound of weeping of those foremost among men, obstructed by the great extent of the palaces, spread throughout both heaven and earth. (15-46-20)
