Determining their route at night by the stars, they headed south and, striving onward, entered a dense forest, O king. (BORI: 1-137-18)
[PV-KDV:01_027_1]
Then the sons of Pandu, exhausted, tormented by thirst, and blinded by sleep, again addressed these words to the mighty Bhimasena: (BORI: 1-137-19)
[PV-KDV:01_027_2]
What could be worse than this—that we are in a dense forest, do not know our bearings, and cannot go on? (BORI: 1-137-20)
[PV-KDV:01_027_3]
We do not know whether that wicked Purocana was burned. How can we escape this danger without being noticed? (BORI: 1-137-21)
[PV-KDV:01_027_4]
Take us up again and continue on in the same way, O Bharata. For you alone among us are as strong as the ever-moving wind. (BORI: 1-137-22)
[PV-KDV:01_027_5]
Thus addressed by King Dharma, the mighty Bhimasena swiftly set out, carrying Kunti and his brothers. (BORI: 1-137-23)
[PV-KDV:01_027_6]
At that very time, however, the wise Vidura, in accordance with the arrangement, sent an upright man to that forest. (KUMB: 1-161-1; NILA: 01.149.001)
[PV-SVO:01_027_7]
a man trusted by both himself and the Pandavas, already known to them, who knew the password, to ferry them across the Ganges. (KUMB: 1-161-2)
[PV-SVO:01_027_8]
He went to the appointed place and found the Pandavas in the forest; together with their mother, he led those descendants of Kuru to the bank of the Ganges. (KUMB: 1-161-3; NILA: 01.149.002)
[PV-SVO:01_027_9]
That became known to the great and highly intelligent Vidura; then, through one of his spies as well, he learned what the evil-minded man was doing. (KUMB: 1-161-4; NILA: 01.149.003)
[PV-SVO:01_027_10]
Then the knowledgeable man dispatched by Vidura showed the sons of Pṛthā one that moved as swiftly as thought and wind… (KUMB: 1-161-5; NILA: 01.149.004)
[PV-SVO:01_027_11]
a flag-bearing boat capable of withstanding every wind, fitted with machinery and built by trustworthy men on a safe bank of the Bhagirathi. (KUMB: 1-161-6; NILA: 01.149.005)
[PV-SVO:01_027_12]
Then he again gave the previously prescribed token: “Yudhishthira, take note of this message from the wise man, intended as a sign:” (KUMB: 1-161-7; NILA: 01.149.006)
[PV-SVO:01_027_13]
A fire that consumes brush and dispels cold does not kill those who dwell in burrows in a great forest; whoever protects himself in this way survives. (KUMB: 1-161-8; NILA: 01.149.007)
[PV-SVO:01_027_14]
What Vidura told you to understand is exactly so. (KUMB: 1-161-8)
[PV-SVO:01_027_15]
Know from this token that I was sent by him as a trusted agent. And Vidura the Kshatta, who understood every aspect of the matter, further said to me… (KUMB: 1-161-9; NILA: 01.149.008)
[PV-SVO:01_027_16]
KUMB: १-१६१-९॥
noble-minded, as he reproached Dhritarashtra’s son and his brothers: (KUMB: 1-161-9)
[PV-SVO:01_027_17]
Son of Kunti, you will undoubtedly defeat Karna, Duryodhana and his brothers, and Shakuni in battle. (KUMB: 1-161-10; NILA: 01.149.009)
[PV-SVO:01_027_18]
the brave chief of the Nishadas, a supremely righteous fisherman, whom the Pandavas too, after reaching the splendid bank of the Ganges... (KUMB: 1-161-11)
[PV-SVO:01_027_19]
The sons of Pandu saw the boatman, who had lit the way with lamps and was searching for them in great haste. (KUMB: 1-161-12)
[PV-SVO:01_027_20]
There the Niṣāda gave Kuntī’s sons the sign of recognition from the highly intelligent Vidura, beginning with what he had said at that time in the Mleccha tongue: (KUMB: 1-161-13)
[PV-SVO:01_027_21]
After giving me great wealth, Vidura instructed me: “Station yourself on the bank of the Ganges and ferry the Pandavas across.” (KUMB: 1-161-14)
[PV-SVO:01_027_22]
And so, for fourteen days now, I have been searching for you through scouts in this forest near the Ganges, which teems with herds of deer. (KUMB: 1-161-15)
[PV-SVO:01_027_23]
Then, exalted ones, may all be well with you. Board and depart in this sound, mansion-like boat, equipped with oars and a flag. (KUMB: 1-161-16)
[PV-SVO:01_027_24]
This boat is ready for the waterway and moves easily through the water. It will carry you all away from this place, without a doubt. (KUMB: 1-161-17; NILA: 01.149.010)
[PV-SVO:01_027_25]
Then, seeing those best of men distressed along with their mother, he put them aboard the boat and, as they set out upon the Ganges, spoke to them again. (KUMB: 1-161-18; NILA: 01.149.011)
[PV-SVO:01_027_26]
Vidura kissed them on the head and embraced them, repeatedly saying, “Go safely on your way, free from anxiety.” (KUMB: 1-161-19; NILA: 01.149.012)
[PV-SVO:01_027_27]
Having said this, the man whom Vidura had instructed ferried those heroic men, those bulls among men, across the Ganges in a boat, O king of kings. (KUMB: 1-161-20; NILA: 01.149.013)
[PV-SVO:01_027_28]
After ferrying them across the Ganges and bringing them all safely to the far shore, he wished them victory and then returned the way he had come. (KUMB: 1-161-21; NILA: 01.149.014)
[PV-SVO:01_027_29]
After sending a reply to the wise man, the noble Pandavas crossed the Ganges and swiftly went on, concealed and unobserved. (KUMB: 1-161-22; NILA: 01.149.015)
[PV-SVO:01_027_30]
Then, having crossed the Ganges there, with its towering waves... (KUMB: 1-161-23)
[PV-SVO:01_027_31]
The mighty ones, six including their mother, reached the River Ganges. (NILA: 01.150.019)
[PV-SVO:01_027_32]
Through the strength of the fishermen’s arms, the swiftness of the river’s current, and a favorable wind, they quickly reached the far shore. (NILA: 01.150.020)
[PV-SVO:01_027_33]
Then, leaving the boat behind, they proceeded southward. (NILA: 01.150.021)
[PV-SVO:01_027_34]
Even the righteous pay no heed to that duty—alas, the power of fate! Even learned and wise men are subject to the wealthy—alas! (KUMB: 1-162-6)
[PV-SVO:01_027_35]
Even the great do not look after good men who are helpless, deeply righteous, and wholly devoted to truth; fate is their final refuge. (KUMB: 1-162-7)
[PV-SVO:01_027_36]
“Look here! This is Kunti, the unfortunate Vrishni woman, lying burned with her sons. Alas!” the townspeople said. (KUMB: 1-162-10)
[PV-SVO:01_027_37]
He was inwardly delighted but outwardly filled with grief, like a deep lake in summer, cool within but warm on the surface. (KUMB: 1-162-14)
[PV-SVO:01_027_38]
My great-souled perpetuators of the family line have been burned. (KUMB: 1-162-18)
[PV-SVO:01_027_39]
Then all the Kauravas, together with Bhishma and Dhritarashtra and his sons, assembled and went toward the Ganges. (KUMB: 1-162-20)
[PV-SVO:01_027_40]

Clad in a single garment, joyless and without ornaments or adornment, wishing to make water offerings for the great-souled Pandavas. (KUMB: 1-162-21)
[PV-SVO:01_027_41]

Some cried, “Alas, Phalguna!” and others, “Alas, the twins!” In anguish, the people mourned Kunti and offered libations of water. (KUMB: 1-162-24; NILA: 01.150.017)
[PV-SVO:01_027_43]
Other inhabitants of the city likewise mourned for the Pandavas. (KUMB: 1-162-25; NILA: 01.150.018)

[PV-SVO:01_027_45]

How did the Kaurava, together with his mother, fall under the sway of fate—after being cared for so long, like a tree when its time to bear fruit has come… (KUMB: 1-162-36)
[PV-SVO:01_027_55]

[PV-SVO:01_027_59]

[PV-SVO:01_027_62]
